Maรณ, the Port of Maรณ, Sa Bassa, San Antoni & Cala Llonga No holiday to Menorca would be complete without a trip to the island's capital Maรณ (Mahรณn). Maรณ is famous for its breathtaking natural harbour, which stretches an amazing 5km inland, where you will see everything from local fishing boats to millionairesโ yachts. The best way to see Maรณ is by foot and as you wander through its labyrinth of streets and beautifully preserved buildings you'll discover the legacy of the various civilizations that have passed through this wonderful town. Start at the Plaza de Bastiรณ to see the only remains of the medieval wall that once surrounded the town, then walk on through to the Gate de San Roc, damaged by the infamous pirate Barbarossa in 1535. Throughout the streets you will see a rich Georgian architectural style, a lasting legacy of the British rule in the 18th century. Today Maรณ is a sophisticated and bustling town offering shopping galore from designer boutiques to local craft shops. It holds its daily fruit and vegetable market in the beautifully restored cloisters of the Church of Carme as well as musical events here throughout the year. At the other end of the town is the main town square of Plaza Esplanada which holds a craft market every Tuesday and Saturday and includes a children's play area - perfect for keeping them amused whilst you shop. The best way of seeing the historic Port of Maรณ for the first time is via the impressive steps from 'Ses De Voltes' that lead down to the waterfront. The harbour front is relaxing by day and buzzing by night and offers endless bars, restaurants and boutiques. It's easy to spend many hours down in the port, watching the ships, admiring the view, enjoying the hospitality of the restaurants or just quietly taking in the balmy atmosphere. On a hillside overlooking Maรณ harbour are the lovely residential areas of San Antoni, Sa Bassa and Cala Llonga. Stunning views, breathtaking sunsets and magical evenings with the lights from Es Castell and the port twinkling in the water below make this one of the most sought after locations in the Mediterranean. Catch the water taxi that runs from the cala in Cala Llonga to either the port in Maรณ or Cales Fonts and don't miss visiting the 18th century La Mola fortress on the headland, one of the most beautiful sites on the island. Within Cala Llonga there is a small supermarket and there is also a local shop, restaurant and bar in the nearby unspoilt village of Mesquida. The beach of Sa Mesquida is said to be one of the prettiest on the island and is a favourite with local families.

Sant Lluís, Torret, S’Ullastrar & Llucmaçanes Close to the capital Maó, on the southern end of the island is the picturesque town of Sant Lluís with its whitewashed houses and narrow streets. It was founded by the French in the 18th century and named after King Louis IX. The town was built around the neoclassical church, which still bears the king's name and where the locals enjoy the cool shade in its charming garden during the heat of the day. As you approach Sant Lluís you will see the old windmill Molí de Dalt which has been fully restored and is now a Folklore Museum open to the public. Sant Lluís is a very traditional old town and the houses have changed very little since the 18th century with their simple façades, so typical of the Menorcan architecture of this period. The main street boasts traditional shops selling quality local produce and freshly made bread and pastries can be bought daily. Once a week a lively market is held in the main square. There are also many local bars and restaurants where you are guaranteed good food, including the local tapas. Close to Sant Lluís are the hamlets of Pou Nou, S'Ullastrar and Torret, with their pretty whitewashed houses, views over open countryside and excellent restaurants. Es Castell, Cales Fonts, Santa Ana & TrebalĂşger Occupying a commanding position at the entrance to Mao's harbour, Es Castell is the most eastern town in all of Spain and the first to get the morning sun. Originally founded by the British in 1771 and named Georgetown after George III, Es Castell retains the feel of a colonial town with neat parallel streets, 18th century Georgian architecture and the island's original barracks. Life in the town revolves around the central Placa S'Esplanada surrounded by Georgian buildings, including the distinctive red Town Hall with its English clock tower, a wellknown landmark. As well as holding a popular weekly local market, the plaza is the place to go to see the everyday life of Es Castell where locals meet and children play. A short walk from the plaza takes you down to the pretty inlet and small fishing harbour of Cales Fonts. Son Ganxo, Punta Prima, Binibequer & Binibequer Vell Close to the capital Maó, at the southernmost tip of the island lies a cluster of pretty villages and beach resorts. Originally a small fishing village, Son Ganxo has grown into a charming hamlet of quality houses. Down on the water's edge you will still see the traditional fishing Llauts and it is possible to dive and swim from the rocks. There is also a swimming platform, ideal to catch the sun's rays, and a ladder down for those less adventurous. Lying at the southernmost tip of Menorca is the beach resort of Punta Prima which faces the beautiful island of Illa de l'Aire, famous for its black lizards. It has a white sandy beach that slopes gently away into the sea, making it popular with families. Behind the beach there is an esplanade with several shops, bars and restaurants. Binibequer is a cluster of private villas built around the fishing cove of Cala Torret and the beach of Binibequer. Alaior, Son Bou & San Jaime The old town of Alaior is now the third most important town on the island and is famous for its cheese, leather shoes and other local handicrafts which can be seen in shops across the town. Situated on a hillside 12km west of Maó, the town was originally a Moorish settlement called Ihalor. Take a stroll through its narrow, winding streets and feel its ancient, medieval past all around you. In addition there is a great selection of shops, banks and very good quality restaurants serving locally produced fresh produce, plus many local bars and pavement cafés to soak up the town’s ancient atmosphere. The resort of Son Bou, 5 minutes drive from Alaior, is a sun worshipper’s paradise. Its beach has nearly 3km of pale soft sand, making it the longest on the island and always offers plenty of secluded space. This is an important conservation area for migratory and aquatic birds so despite the growth of tourism the area has retained an ecological balance. Ferreries & Ciutadella Right in the heart of the island, approximately 25 minutes from the capital Ma贸, is the pretty town of Ferreries. It is surrounded by hills and gorges and sits at the foot of Menorca's second highest peak, Santa Agueda. It is well worth the trek up the original Roman road to the summit even in the hot summer months. Walk through the old narrow streets of the town and you'll find numerous family run shops and stalls selling home-made products, and freshly made bread and pastries can be bought daily. There are many local tapas bars and restaurants all serving excellent food. Spend some time in the Placa d'Espanya, the town's pretty central square where they hold a market every Saturday morning, to see the traditional Menorcan dancers who perform throughout the summer. Ferreries also has an excellent museum, the Museo de la Naturaleza, where visitors can soak up the island's environment, culture and traditional values. On the west of the island you will find the beautiful and ancient town of Ciutadella. Founded by the Carthaginians in the 4th century, it was during the 17th century that many of the town's most beautiful buildings were built in the Italian style, giving Ciutadella an historical and artistic unity. As you arrive from Ma贸, a large statue of a beautiful and impressive rearing black stallion offers an insight into the town's infamous 'Fiesta de San Juan', a notorious traditional festival which takes place in June and dates back to the Middle Ages. In the town centre is the Pla莽a d'Es Born, home to the Town Hall, a former palace of the Arab governor, the Es Born Theatre and a number of grand mansions in the Gothic Revival style. Take any route off from this square and step back in time into a network of twisting, narrow, medieval streets. Your Holiday Arrangements & Menorca Private Owners When you arrange a holiday through Menorca Private Owners (MPO) we can provisionally hold accommodation dates for you for a few days whilst you are considering a booking. This ‘option’ can be arranged over the telephone and will reserve dates for your holiday whilst flight arrangements are considered. When you are ready to confirm a reservation we will ask you to pay a deposit by credit card, which will only be charged when we have confirmation of your dates by the owner.

If you arrive earlier in Menorca it is acceptable to leave your luggage at the accommodation after 11 a.m. but we ask you not to occupy the villa prior to this time.

Full payment for your accommodation is due 10 weeks before your holiday departure date, and an invoice will be sent to you at the time of booking showing the costs and the payment date. It is important not to miss this payment date as the owner has the right to cancel your booking if full payment is not received by the due date. It is important to note that all reservations made with MPO carry a guarantee of a full 100% refund of your accommodation costs in the unlikely event that the owner has to cancel your booking, or the choice of an alternative accommodation, whichever you prefer. At the time of booking we will send you a personal password and login for our website where all your holiday arrangements can be viewed, including account details and payment dates, and where you can input your information

On the day of departure we ask you to vacate by 10 a.m. in most circumstances unless the villa is not booked immediately to another party. MPO cannot arrange for you to stay after 10 a.m. without agreement from the owner. Using well chosen local car hire companies, MPO are happy to make arrangements on your behalf. It is important to note that our arrangements are always made with a guaranteed price promise, with full insurance waiver. We do not recommend companies that add additional local charges on arrival, or ask you to wait in line at a box at the airport. Please ask for more details and a quotation. Holiday insurance is required as a condition of booking to cover the value of your accommodation in the unlikely event you have to cancel your reservation, including cover for your luggage and personal effects whilst on holiday. In certain circumstances it may be possible to alter your holiday dates and a nominal

In the unlikely event that anything goes wrong during your holiday MPO take pride in their customer care and are available on the telephone to assist, with Spanish speaking staff if required.
