On behalf of the Fédération Equestre Internationale, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Las Vegas (USA) for another leg of the highly anticipated Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ North American League 2021/2022. Over the next few days, we will have some of the world’s finest sport horses and athletes showcase their talent as they chase precious FEI World Cup™ points, aiming for the Final in Leipzig (GER) 6-10 April 2022. The USA, Canada and Mexico will once again be setting the scene of the North American League with currently eight suspense-filled qualifiers of which four count towards the overall standings. Our North American journey began in Vancouver (CAN), and soon we will be heading out to Fort Worth (USA) and Puebla (MEX), only to name a few; at each leg, we are guaranteed to experience top-level sport as athletes and horses brave courses of highest standards, set up by some of the best course designers in the world. We have all become accustomed to change over the past year with the Covid-19 pandemic, and found solutions and ways of adapting to this new situation in order to resume competitions as best as possible. It is thanks to the collective efforts of organising committees such as the one here in Las Vegas, as well as all the experts that have contributed to the FEI Calendar Task Forces and our Return to Play resources, and tools such as the FEI Policy for Enhanced Competition Safety during the Covid-19 pandemic, that our athletes are able to compete safely. Sixteen leagues, including the North American League, make up the highly successful and global FEI World Cup™ Jumping series which has been in existence since 1978. The format of the FEI World Cup™ series guarantees edge of your seat competitions whilst displaying the fantastic bond between horses and people; the trust, the communication, the hard work and the patience required. It is this bond which enables impressive feats of athleticism to be achieved and the core around which the whole FEI community revolves. I want to thank the Organisers and sponsors along with all those who have dedicated their time, commitment and support to the successful running of the event allowing people around the world to engage first-hand with FEI Jumping. To the athletes and their entourage, I wish you a fantastic event and the best of luck!

Robert Ridland Dear horse show enthusiasts! After a year’s absence due to the pandemic, we are grateful to finally be able to welcome everybody back to Las Vegas! With the long-standing support of Paula and Michael Gaughan, what was once a small, one-ring horse show on the outskirts of town, has transformed itself into the most significant indoor hunter/jumper event in the country. Most notably, we are thrilled to be part of the evolution of the South Point Hotel (and its newly configured three-ring competition footprint) into the premier indoor equestrian facility in the country. Once again, it is exciting to host the enormously popular Marshall & Sterling Insurance/USHJA National Championships which continue to grow in popularity with the expansive schedule of championship opportunities. We are also honored to have the distinction of holding one of only two FEI CSI4*-W events on the West Coast which are qualifiers for the Longines World Cup Final, to be held April 6-10, 2022 in Leipzig, Germany. Scheduled alongside the upcoming FEI CSI5* events at the Desert International Horse Park in Thermal, we are proud that the Las Vegas National is the cornerstone of what has evolved the West Coast into the premier year-end jumping circuit in North America. Good luck, and enjoy your week in Vegas!

Markel Insurance Series Culminates in Vegas
F
ollowing the Las Vegas National Horse Show, Jason McArdle, Nicole Haunert, Joie Gatlin, or Hillary Ridland may be donning a new show coat and making room for a new tack locker.
As the Markel Insurance Jumper Series culminates, here’s a look back at a few of this season’s highlights and biggest winners.
From March through September at Blenheim EquiSports, more than 80 riders contested the 15-part Markel Insurance Jumper Series, vying for prize money and for all-important qualifying points for the grand finale, the $41,000 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Series Final. The qualifying points not only determined which riders were invited to compete at the Las Vegas National Horse Show, they determine who will ride away with the Leading Rider of the Series awards. One overall winner will be presented with a Flexi-Equine locker and a Solea Equestrian Boutique custom show coat, while both the Leading Lady and Leading Gent of the Series will receive cash bonuses. Heading into the final, on Thursday, November 18, McArdle sits atop the leaderboard with 97 points, while Haunert, Gatlin, and Ridland are all close behind on 88, 81, and 80 points, respectively.
Nicole Haunert Nicole Haunert and Calgary IV, owned by Cherokee Show Horses Inc., clinched the win in the $25,000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix during the Blenheim June Classic I, and Haunert and the 13-year-old bay Holsteiner mare continued to be contenders in the series all season long.
Jason McArdle Jason McArdle and Elicole finished in second in the 2019 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Series Final, and now, following a strong season at Blenheim EquiSports, McArdle and the 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, owned by Fairbanks Valley Farms, will be back to go for the win.

Supporting the Sport’s Future Stars: The WCE Medal Final and the CPHA Foundation
Emma Catherine Reichow was presented as the 2019 WCE Medal Final aboard Campitello 5.
The top 10 in the 2019 WCE Medal Final.
The Las Vegas National Horse Show is an end-of-season destination for riders of all levels from across the country. For junior and amateur equitation competitors, that’s largely thanks to the West Coast Equestrian Medal Final. Each year, many of the West Coast’s best and brightest young riders strive to qualify for the WCE Medal Final, made possible by the California Professional Horsemen’s Association Foundation. This year, the WCE Medal Final will be held on Friday, November 19, and Saturday, November 20, with a warm-up class offered on Thursday.
HOW IT WORKS The WCE Medal Final is open to junior and amateur riders that have qualified by earning points in WCE Medal Junior/Amateur classes throughout the show season. At the Las Vegas National Horse Show, all qualified riders will contest two rounds of competition, with the top 10 riders after round two advancing to a third round before one winner is named.

Recognizing Professional Grooms The Grooms Award, Ltd. is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization that recognizes and rewards professional grooms. The Grooms Award is participating at nine major horse shows this year. Created to recognize the workers “behind the scenes,” the Grooms Award was established in honor of Moira Caffarey (who unexpectedly passed away in 1997) and later George Hennessy (transporter for the USET). Friends of Moira donated a trophy for the first-ever grooms’ award at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg where individuals and companies donated prizes to be given to the winning groom. As donations increased each year, more shows were added and it was decided that each of the Grand Prix grooms deserved a “Thank You” for their efforts and professionalism. A tote bag was awarded to each Grand Prix groom, filled with goodies and gift cards from generous sponsors. That program has now been expanded to include select classes in addition to Grand Prix with added prizes for the grooms of winning horses in designated classes.
In addition to the above, the groom of the winning horse also receives a $50 gift certificate from EquiFit; a tack room pillow from Haygain; a custom belt from Boy-O-Boy Bridleworks; a yoga mat and $25 gift card from ThinLine; and a cash prize courtesy of The Grooms Award Ltd. The Grooms Award Ltd. thanks all of its sponsors and supporters including Boy-O-Boy Bridleworks, EquiFit, Friends of Moira and George, GC Ponies and Robin Greenwood, Haygain, Morrissey Management Group (MMG), ThinLine, West Palms Event Management, SmartPak, VT Salt & Stone, and all other supporters of The Grooms Award! For more information, or to donate, please visit www. groomsaward.org. The Grooms Award, Ltd. is also on Facebook and Instagram. #groomsrock
“It’s an honor for us to recognize and reward the professional grooms at top horse shows,” said Andrea Mewhinney, Director of The Grooms Award, Ltd. “Being a groom is a really tough job. Grooms work very hard behind the scenes to keep the equine athletes in their care at the top of their game. The horses and their riders really depend on the grooms, and they deserve to be recognized.” Each show has different prizes, but generally as a “Thank You” for their efforts and professionalism, grooms of all horses entered in the Grand Prix receive an embroidered tote bag from SmartPak that includes snacks, drinks, an EquiFit facemask, a Haygain monogrammed towel and entry into a drawing for an HG One Hay Steamer from Haygain valued at $999, a Busy Buddy, insoles and $25 gift card from ThinLine, Tate’s cookies, Himalayan Salt block from VT Salt, and an assortment of Grooms Award items including a lanyard, a pen and a decal!

Remembering John Franzreb III
Photo © Alden Corrigan
In later years, at his Staten Island, NY, family farm, Franzreb also taught the art of riding and understanding horses and trained and organized horses for use on television and movie sets. As a husband to Judith Franzreb, a father, a grandfather, a friend, and a colleague, Franzreb was beloved by many, and his presence is greatly missed. Photo © Andrew Ryback
Known by many as one of the nicest men they had ever met, John Franzreb III was a highly revered horseman who operated Clove Lake Stables and served as ringmaster at horse shows nationwide, including the Las Vegas National Horse Show. As a young rider, Franzreb competed through the pony and junior ranks, and, at age 17, he began serving as a ringmaster at the prestigious National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden. There, and soon across the country, he quickly became easily recognizable as the man wearing the traditional ringmaster’s outfit and sounding the horn to call for the beginning of each class.
