Number plate pinched By Bill McElhinney When Tony Thiel popped down to the supermarket last week he didn’t expect to be robbed. In fact he didn’t know he had been, until a friend stopped him to point out the front licence plate on his Suzuki car was missing. “I had to go the local AA to get a new set of plates, and they told me there had been a spate of licence plate thefts,” Tony says. Tony and his wife, Coral are well known around Marlborough as popular jazz entertainers, appearing regularly at the Dodson Street Bar with other guest artists. Continued on page 2 Tony Thiel had to buy new number plates after the front number plate was stolen from his car last week.

Spate of vehicle number plate thefts Continued from page 1 Tony checked with the Post Office depot at the Springlands shopping centre, where the theft took place, and was told the same story- licence plates were being stolen. Tony then reported the incident to the Blenheim Police, who have also been getting reports of the plate thefts. “It appears to have been going on for over a week now,” Community Constable Russ Smith says.

“We’ve had at least a dozen reports of stolen plates, some stolen from the Springlands shopping centre and the Witherlea area has also been targeted.” Russ suspects the stolen plates are fixed to vehicles that are the used in drive-off petrol thefts. “We’ve already had one report in from a service station that has been hit, and we suspect CCTV footage will show the vehicle has stolen plates.”

And it appears number plates are being stolen at an increasing rate around New Zealand. Since 2011, the number of thefts has risen by 39 percent. Crimes that are related to stolen number plates include petrol thefts, avoidance of traffic-related fines or tolls, shoplifting, burglary and robbery. “We seen this sort of thing happen in the bigger centres, and now it has hit Blenheim,” Russ says.

“But the people doing this need to know that they’re committing a crime, and there are some hefty penalties. “Police have a pretty good success rate in catching these offenders, and they will be prosecuted,” Russ says. In the meantime, Tony has had to get a new set of licence plates for his vehicle. “Cost me $19.41 plus the inconvenience,” he says.

By Bill McElhinney Brent Laurensen has the solution to prevent vehicle number plates being stolen. Brent is the local Community Patrols chairman and heads a team of 15 volunteers who scout Blenheim on Saturday nights to help police. There are community patrols groups across the country that work to help police reduce crime and build safer communities. “We can provide you with a set of special screws that you can use to affix your licence plates,” Brent says. “These screws can only be removed with a special tool, which you can’t buy. “ T he Com mu n it y Patrols can provide the screws and a sticker to put on your vehicle which shows the plates can’t be removed. “If you ever need to remove the plates, you just need to contact us and we’ll come and sort

that for you.” Brent says Community Patrols across the country have been working to raise awareness of the plate protection measure in the wake of a spate of thefts. The Blenheim crew plan to be at the Springlands shopping centre car park on Saturday and for a gold coin donation will help make your licence plates secure. Police say other steps people can take to protect their licence plates are parking off the road or in a well-lit place where the vehicle can be seen from a house. If someone has number plates stolen, they can apply for a new plate through one of the New Zealand Transport Agency’s four agents – VTNZ, AA, NZ Post or VINZ. A spokesperson for the Blenheim AA said they have number plates on hand, so there is no delay in getting a new set.

Blenheim Community Patrols chairman Brent Laurensen can provide you with a set of special screws to secure your vehicle licence plates against theft.

Pork and bubbles the perfect match!

By Bill McElhinney The pork belly pie has done it again! The Burleigh Pork Belly matched with the 2014 Rewa Méthode Traditionelle Blanc de Blanc from Tohu Wines is the 2018 winning Burleigh pie/wine pairing. Last year the winning pairing was Lawson’s Dry Hills Pioneer Gewurtztraminer 2015 with a pork belly pie. Thirty five Marlborough wine producers entered the challenge this year - an increase on the inaugural 2017 event. “We know that The Burleigh is the place to satisfy most folks’ pie cravings, but this level of involvement has blown us away yet again,” Belinda Jackson, challenge co-founder, says. “And we are thrilled that this year local charities will benefit with every cent of the entry fee from wineries being split amongst three local organisations”, the other challenge co-founder Fiona Fenwick says. The four judges, Stuart Smith MP, Bradley Hornby, Arbour Restaurant, Scott Radovanovich, Hits FM and Fiona, carried out a totally blind taste testing of all entries, with official adjudication by an international wine judge to ensure fairness all round. “I’ve always enjoyed Burleigh pies, but when

Daffodil day another success By Megan Connolly Yellow balloons and daffodils adorned the streets of Blenheim last Friday for the Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Day Appeal. The day started off at 7am for many of the volunteers, who put up balloons on street poles and set up their collection sites around Blenheim and surrounding towns. The day was a huge success, Cancer Society volunteer coordinator Hilary Gill says. “The only reason Daffodil Day works is because of the input from the volunteers,” Hilary says. The Blenheim CBD was a hub for entertainment with great performances from schools and the pipe band, making the day a real celebration too. The Cancer Society is still receiving donations from preschools, retirement villages and schools, so the exact total raised is still being calculated, but Hilary says it’s on par with last year. “We had such wonderful support from the community,” she says. Around 900 bunches of daffodils went out to businesses on the Tuesday prior to the collection day and “just about the same number” were sold around town on Friday, Hilary adds. The funds raised from Daffodil Day will be going towards assisting patients and families impacted by cancer. “We’d like to thank all the businesses, students from the colleges and volunteers for their massive contributions,” Hilary says. “With all the yellow around it was a very happy Marilyn Kavanagh stopped to buy a bunch of daffodils from Cancer Society volunteer kind of day.” Barry Lyons on Friday.

The staff at Dominion Salt, out at Lake Grassmere, held their own fundraiser for the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day last Friday. “Because we are out of town, we don’t get the collectors visiting,” Jude Bishell from Dominion Salt says. “Most people are affected in some way by cancer, whether family or friends or someone that knows someone else that’s

affected, which is the reason we decided to do it. “At our workplace one of the team brought in some beautiful daffodils, so we made and iced some cupcakes in return for donations,” Jude says. Pictured from left, are Imke Focken, Maree Spence and Caitlin Cooper, the ladies who helped make and ice the cupcakes, and the daffodils came from Maree.

Kerry lends support By Bill McElhinney The Marlborough Children’s Teams newly appointed coordinator, Kerry Burfoot, comes with a breadth of experiences that equip her very well for the important role of integrating support for children and their whanau. After some years as a primary school teacher, Kerry joined the Police force and worked in both Wellington and Marlborough. Many people in the local community will have met her at the front counter of the Blenheim Police station. Even more however will have met her through her extensive involvement in the Blenheim Gymnastics, children’s athletics and biking clubs. Marlborough is one of 10 sites nationally where a Children’s Team has been set up to help at-risk young people. Child, Youth and Family workers deal with children who have complex issues, Marlborough Children’s Team director Mike Henderson says.

Kerry Burfoot.

“It’s important to recognise these issues as early as possible,” Mike says. “There are often a number of issues to address and we want to work with early childhood educators, schools and families to address these.” At the heart of the Children’s Team approach is the building of relationships and the connecting up of services and resources for children and families dealing with complex issues. The Marlborough Chil-

dren’s Team receives referrals from a range of people within the community, including Child, Youth and Family workers, school principals, GPs and nurses. After a child is referred to the team, all the professionals involved in the child’s care come together to form an action network to develop with whanau a single support plan A lead professional within the team helps co-ordinate all the support a child and their family needs. With her communication skills, and an extensive network of colleagues and acquaintances, Kerry will be a real asset to the Children’s Team process of assessing needs and coordinating multiagency responses, Mike says. “Support for the Children’s Team has been fantastic since its inception in Marlborough in 2014, both from social service agencies and their staff, but at times also from businesses who have come on board to help.”

Street lights Dear Ed, I know that we have to have new street lights, which makes good economic sense, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have to look good. Kick them into touch Dear Ed, What a great game rugby is. Over the years it just gets better and better. I was fortunate to play through my younger years and at an above-average level. During the years we have been served by some great rugby commentators, legends like McCarthy, Quinn et al. So it is sad when one feels compelled to write to your fine paper and loyal readers to complain about the state of present day television rugby commentators. Marshall, Bates and others may have been fine players in their day, but as commentators they don’t cut it. These guys, and their many contemporaries,

are just no good. The principal villain in this sad state of affairs would seem to be Sky Sport, the organisation that employs these guys. If only the commentators would call the game as they, and the viewers, see it. Why stuff up a good match by speculating about some minor incident, bagging the champion team, talking up the likely losers, and generally talking all sorts of rubbish about nothing? Enough is enough – it’s time to give these guys the push. Jeff and Mils are the exception, and perhaps we could have more of no-bull Ian Jones. Double Digit Blenheim

Sub-atomic physics Dear Ed, In the wake of the news of the discovery of a new planet comes his announcement: A major research institution has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science. Called Governmentium – Gv – it has one neutron, 21 assistant neutrons, six deputy neutrons and 93 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 121. These 121 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it comes in contact. Governmentium has a normal half-life of three years. It does not decay but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons, deputy assistant neutrons and assistant deputy neutrons prepare to exchange places. Governmentium’s mass will increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical Morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element which radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons. Heaps of compost for Picton ladies By Megan Connolly Composting sounds hard, right? Linda Thompson, from Plastic Free Picton, and Rebeka h Hall, from Sustainance, have joined forces and are working to change that attitude through a new initiative that helps people set up a compost system at their own home. It started as part of Organic New Zealand Week, in which volunteers were asked to make over a whole garden and composting was a part of the project. Linda and Rebekah adapted this idea into a way to create positive eco-friendly choices, unite the community, and create an educational tool for those who want to get involved with the sustainable movement but don’t know where to start. The initiative works like this: Rebekah and her partner will find a time that suits you to do a site visit, where they will see what reusable materials are already available so that the building of the compost heap can also be sustainable. Then a small group of volunteers will come to

your garden and help you get started in setting up your compost area. “It’s about creating a circular economy. “You grow, eat and put it back into the soil,” Rebekah says. In fact, half of our household rubbish is compostable materials, she says. Food scraps sit in the landfill without oxygen and can’t breathe or break down naturally, and may cause water pollution and give off the potent greenhouse gas methane. You don’t need a big back yard or a lot of space and there are a lot of different compost types, Linda says. “You can bury a bucket, dig a trench, make a worm farm or even use a Bokashi bin in your kitchen. “People are scared it’s complicated but it’s just a lack of knowledge. We want to raise awareness and teach the skills,” Rebekah says. If you’re interested in either volunteering or would like help in setting up your own compost heap contact Rebekah at team.sustainance@ outlook.com or Linda at plasticbagfreepicton@ gmail.com.

Angel Investor Colin Hill with local film maker Aaron Falvey. Photo by Anthony Phelps.

Film investment pays off Angel Investors Marlborough has made its first investment in Marlborough’s fledgling film industry, and it could be the first foray of many, as Celeste Alexander finds out.

Blenheim man Aaron Falvey has been working for almost three years on his short film, Ascendance, and during that time, he has built a community of like-minded people to boost filmmaking in the district. Ascendance is a science fiction film, telling the story of a super-soldier who is hired by a corporation to hunt down an unknown assailant, unearthing past misdeeds. Aaron says it was “especially challenging” to do what he was trying to achieve, with all the action and all the people involved. It was a true international collaboration, he says, with 12 cast and crew coming over from the United States. The film poster was designed by a Hollywood professional. “We cut down on costs and eked

it out. Unfortunately we struck a few hurdles in production where we went over budget due to a unforeseen circumstances. “The overrun budget was not tens of thousands, but it was enough to hold things up.” He says things such as the score, sound design and visual effects all needed to be done by professionals. “Being a Sci-Fi film we needed to have some futuristic visual elements created to sell the authenticity of the universe the film is set” That’s where Colin Hill stepped in. Colin is on the board of Angel investors Marlborough, and Aaron spoke to the board about his vision for a film-making community in Marlborough. Colin says he was impressed with Aaron, and talked with him “at some length” after the presenta-

tion. It was the best presentation he’s seen at AIM so far. “I paid the budget shortfall…. It’s one of those crazy things I’m doing.” Colin works in telecommunications, and has lived in Marlborough since 2012, after moving to New Zealand. “I’ve been around a lot and done a lot of things in my life. I have a track record for helping young people. I do various sponsorships.” The film was not of consequence at that point, Colin says. “I was trying to assist someone to finish the job. I’m not particularly into sci-fi films but felt something had to be done to help him on his way.” Aaron says the presentation was about investing in film in Marlborough generally, rather than his particular project.

“There are some potential projects coming up in the next few years, which will be looking for investment. I covered the opportunities and the risks.” Ascendance is a 27 minute-long film, with an M rating, which will premier at the Top of the South Film Festival on October 6. Aaron says it’s finished now, and he’s proud of what he’s achieved. “All films have got their flaws, it’s not perfect, but I’m proud of the amount of time and effort that’s gone into it.” As the film’s crucial investor, Colin will be getting a private screening. And it may not be his last brush with the film world - Colin has an idea for a film of his own, a family adventure film based around a horse and its young rider who loses her sight.

finished. “It was interesting finding out the range of interests the students have. It was great seeing the students getting to analyse such different subjects,” Helen says.

By Megan Connolly Young singers from Springlands, Picton, Waikawa, Fairhall, and Rapaura primary schools are rehearsing for the upcoming Marlborough Primary Schools Choirs performances of ‘Ain’t nothing but Disney,’ to be held from September 18 to 20. The focus of the Marlborough Primary Schools’ Music Festival this year is themed around Disney songs, with different school groups singing some

favourites from shows such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Frozen and Moana. The students started rehearsing late in term one for the festival and are already buzzing with excitement. “The kids were quite nervous beforehand but now they’re excited,” Rapaura teacher Chris Valli says. “We’re lucky, the acoustics in the ASB Theatre are so great. With 200-250 kids singing it is so powerful.”

By Megan Connolly Fairhall primary school students have been working hard the past term researching and developing their science and technology projects. The students, ranging from new entrant to year eight, have picked topics that interested them, teacher Helen Marshall says. Over 100 exhibits line the walls and tables of a classroom with varying investigations taking place, from why food goes mouldy, to baking, breakfast cereals, dogs and pets. Their teachers have guided the students through some of the process but it is ultimately all the student’s work, Helen says. “We helped with things such as hypothesis, variables and how to work out and average data,” Helen says. Each project is judged by a team of students from Marlborough Girls’ College, who talk to each individual about their projects and log books, marking them against their list of judging criteria. The successful gold awarded projects will go on to the Marlborough Science and Technology Celebration at the Marlborough Lines Stadium on

A Fantastic Family Cruise in the Marlborough Sounds Lisa with some of her 21 inches of hair that was cut off last Saturday. Photos by Lily-Alyce Vercoe.

Lisa’s hair is being made into a wig.

Over $500 raised from haircut As the scissors came out last Saturday, local lady Lisa Deer was nervous to see her beautiful long locks cut off, but the fact it was for charity made it a good cause. The 32-year-old visited Vamp Hair Boutique where she enjoyed one last wash and blowdry before having just over 21 inches cut off. The cut was also a way of raising awareness for Ronald McDonald House South Island. Lisa underwent surgery 13 years ago to remove a brain tumour and while in Christchurch, she and her mother Janice Thompsett were able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House there. Lisa was joined by family members and supporters as her long hair was tied into ponytails then cut. As well as sporting a gorgeous new hairstyle, so far Lisa and her supporters have

managed to raise $530 via the Givealittle page, givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/help-raisefunds-for-ronald-mcdonald-house-south. Ronald McDonald House South Island CEO, Mandy Kennedy says; “Seeing Lisa happy and healthy more than ten years after she stayed at Ronald McDonald House South Island is very, very special.” “We’re so grateful to Lisa for her courage and to everyone supporting her for making such a generous donation. “Last year, families from the Nelson/Marlborough region accounted for 120 visits to our Christchurch House, so with this donation we can keep local families like Lisa’s close when they need it the most,” Mandy says. For those still wanting to make a donation, there are donation buckets at X’Foliate Beauty Salon and Café Velvet in the Queen’s Mall or visit the Givealittle page.

Bug free, clean workspace

Allergies in your home Have you notice a fine layer of yellow/green powder on your car, and in and around your home? It’s pollen! There’s been a noticeable amount of pollen drifting around the region and for hay fever sufferers, it’s not quite the spring welcome they’ve been waiting for. Because pollen is so fine, it can be carried long distances and through open windows and doors, so chances are some has made it into your home. Pollen is easily inhaled and can trigger allergic reactions affecting the sinus and respiratory tract of those with this allergy. Symptoms can include watery eyes, a runny nose, sore throat, coughing, increased mucous, headaches and asthma. It’s not only pollen that triggers allergies, dust mites, pet dander, mould and cockroach droppings can also trigger symptoms. If you suffer from allergies it might be a good time to give your home a good clean to reduce the impact on your health. Here are some tips for cleaning your home of aller-

gy-causing problems. Dusting the right way One of the best ways to control indoor allergens is by getting rid of dust. Be aware that dusting can actually make things worse by kicking up the allergen particles into the air, so use a damp or treated cloth and consider wearing a dust mask when cleaning. Also, minimise clutter in your home as it tends to collect dust. Vacuum regularly Vacuum at least once or twice a week, but remember vacuuming can also send dust particles into the air. If you can, use a vacuum cleaner with an allergy filter to trap small particles and prevent them from spreading. Wash away allergens Dust mites tend to thrive in bedding, pillows and throw rugs. At least once a week wash pillowcases, sheets and blankets in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer or hang outside in the sun. Avoid harsh chemicals If you are sensitive to harsh chemicals found in some household cleaners, consider using some environmentally friendly cleaning products made from plant-based in-

gredients. You can also make your own natural products using ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda and lemon. Pet dander Think you might be allergic to your furry friends? Relax, it might just be a reaction to the protein found in the saliva, urine and dander (dead skin flakes) of your pets. When these particles become airborne they can trigger symptoms in those who are sensitive. Reduce the affect of these allergen particles by vacuuming frequently, washing your pet at least once a week, keeping your pet off the furniture and in more extreme measures, designating certain areas of the house as pet-free zones. Control pests Are bugs bugging you? What you might not know is that a protein found in cockroach droppings can also trigger allergies in some people. Rid your home of cockroaches by calling in a professional pest control company and clean your home regularly.

A large number of people spend their days working at a desk. What’s most shocking is knowing that viruses and virus-causing bacteria can survive on work surfaces. If hands are not washed or sanitised, millions of bacteria can be transferred to surfaces all over the office and some of these microbes can stay alive for days. While winter is over and springtime is here, there’s still every risk that colds and other viruses can be spread. Maintaining the cleanliness of your workspace can help to prevent illness and protect you and your co-workers. Easy tips for cleaning your workspace to fight the spread of illness at work: • Sanitise surfaces daily • Disinfectant wipe at the end of each day • Keep hand sanitiser at your desk • Clean your keyboard regularly

Maori night market welcomes all By Celeste Alexander In the year 1972 the Maori language petition was delivered to parliament with the purpose of asking for active recognition of te reo Maori for the language to be offered in schools. It had over 30,000 signatures and became the starting point for a significant revitalisation of te reo. History showed that at the time the Maori language was considered ‘endangered’, but thanks to that petition people began to listen and in 1977 the first bilingual school was opened and in 1982 the Kohanga Reo movement began immersing preschool children in Maori. Fast forward 46 years and the Maori language is not only an important part of the education system, but it’s widely celebrated. This is why events such as the Te Pataka o Wairau Maori Night Market, launched last year in Blenheim, are so successful. Last year’s market was an ‘overwhelming success’ organisers say, and they are looking forward to doing it all again on September 14 at Seymour Square. “Nau Mai Haere Mai’ is the welcome call to locals and visitors to a fun filled event that celebrates Te Ao Maori,” project manager, Dr Lorraine Eade says. “We’re sharing the theme ‘ Kia Kaha te Reo Maori’ because the event coincides with Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori commemorating

the presentation of the 1972 petition on the Maori language to parliament. “We want to encourage people to celebrate September as Mahuru Maori, and dedicate themselves to speaking Maori,” she says. As part of the night market which will run from 4-9pm, there will be a tent set up with whanau members who speak fluently to encourage others to support us to make the Maori language strong. “Every New Zealander can help strengthen our language and that’s the message we want to convey,” Lorraine says. “We’re excited about the lineup of stalls and the chance to showcase our Maori talent in Te Tau Ihu - top-of-the-south.” Craft stalls range from Taunga by Timoti, Tyed with Essence by Jasmine Luke and Te Uhi o Wairau Ta Moko and Whakairo will be there with talented young artist Tane Henderson-Deakin. There will be a range of local family entertainment including DJ Bex and Te Rerenga o Te Ra, MBC/MGC combined kapahaka and Bohally Intermediate kapahaka roopu, the soulful sounds of Carolyn Tipene and Tui Caldwell. It’s sure to be a friendly whanau atmosphere where everyone can celebrate and enjoy the fantastic offerings from Te Pataka o Wairau (Storehouse of Wairau).

They’d love to see you out at the scenic Wairau Valley golf course. Some of Cockies Classic organisers, from left: Allan Johnston, club president, Maureen McKenzie, David Price, life member John Anderson, Elaine Brown, Dianne Marsh, Steve Mackenzie, Michael McKenzie and Lyn Johnston.

Popular Cockies Classic golf tournament on again soon By Bill McElhinney It started as a day off for hard working farmers 40 years ago, in 1978. Now the Wairau Valley Cockies Classic golf tournament attracts dozens of players from all around the Top of the South. “The first tournament started after pharmaceutical rep. Ferg Jackson donated a drum of animal drench to use as a fundraiser for the Wairau Valley club,” long time member John Anderson says. “Members discussed raffling the drench, but then came up with the idea of holding a golf tournament

with the drench as a prize. “The late Laurie Moore suggested we call it the Cockies Classic, with nine holes in the morning, a break for lunch, and nine holes in the afternoon. It was for cockies – men only in those days. “It really was a cockies day out, with players coming from as far away as Takaka and some even playing in gumboots,” John says. “The tournament was then extended to include associates such as stock agents, bankers, lawyers and the like, and an entry fee was set and prize money put up. “As time went on it was realised

that not all cockies were blokes, so the ladies were welcomed to join in,” John says. “The tournament is played in the same spirit as when it started. It’s a fun day out with lunch provided and everyone gets a prize. And on some frosty mornings when we played in June, the day started with a tot of rum on the first tee!” The tournament is the club’s annual fundraiser, John says. “It’s a wonderful day out. “The club house is too small to cater for the number of players we get, so we hire the Wairau Valley Hall for the occasion.

“The ladies do a great job providing lunch and a hot meal before the prize giving at the end of the tournament. “Some years when we’ve had up to 120 players we’ve had to have the car lights on to allow the last group to finish”. This year’s tournament promises to be another great day out. Tee off begins at 8.30am until 10.30am on Wednesday, September 19, at the Wairau Valley Golf Club. Both men and women, with or without a handicap, from all walks of life are invited to join in.

Blue team - Shane Heywood Sponsor - The Redwood Tavern & Xpotential Three years ago I found boxing fitness classes with Marcelo Lopes and I quickly become hooked. I initially went to the classes just for the enjoyment however I then set myself a goal to loose weight. Within eight months I had reached my goal (40kg down) and decided I needed a new

challenge. I decided the next step would be to step in the ring as it is a whole new level of fitness, even compared to boxing fitness classes, what better way to push yourself right? When the Fight for Life came up I was more then ready to put my hand up and give it a go.

Having two children myself the Life Education Trust is a great cause and organisation to put it all on the line for and really challenge myself. A huge thanks to my sponsors Mike and Kerry from The Redwood Tavern and Xpotential.

The Sun will be profiling each Fight For Life competitor in the lead up to the big event on September 29.
