Kamikaze survivors

By Chris Tobin Old shipmates Dick Sutcliffe, 88, Pipi Boyd, 84, and Bill Sterritt, 88, all of Marlborough, had a lucky break at the end of the Second World War which could have saved their lives. Together with another Marlborough man, Keith Gibb, a RNZAF vet, they are among a group of New Zealand Second World War veterans travelling to Noumea later this month for commemorations of the war in the Pacific and it has been a time for them to remember – especially their good fortune. On August 16, 1945, the day after the war against Japan was supposed to have ended, Messrs Sutcliffe, Boyd and Sterritt were all on the HMNZS Gambia, a light cruiser when a Japanese suicide bomber came at them. Kamikaze survivors Continued from page 1 “The war had actually finished; there’d been a ceasefire and we were just off the coast of Japan,” Mr Sutcliffe recalled. “It was 8.30 in the morning and there were 100 to 150 chaps all ready for a landing when out of the blue there was machinegun fire and some hit the Gambia. “The guys ran for cover; the bullets came from two or three American Corsairs from the US Navy flying over the top as cover. “They’d swooped on a Japanese suicide bomber that was about to hit the Gambia. “The Jap bomber was shot and went up in flames; his bomb was dumped in front of the Gambia and parts of it blew over the ship.” Mr Sutcliffe was a seaman gunner, Mr Sterritt, a radar rating, and Mr Boyd “a signal boy” - he was aged only 16. Mr Boyd remembered the incident also. “Every bugger thought the bomber was heading for us. The pilot who shot it down was a Yank; he came out after

the war for a reunion in Westport.” Mr Sterritt said there had been a desperate rush for cover as the Kamikaze drew near. “I saw pieces flying over the ship and jumped into a turret – it was full of guys! This was after VJ Day (Victory Over Japan Day) and we thought it (the war) was all over. “We were a bit cheesed off.” Being a lookout on the upper deck, Mr Boyd said he had “a bird’s-eye view” of this and other suicide bombers they had earlier encountered. “It was different,” Mr Boyd said of the suicide bombers. “I suppose it makes you look at life a different way too.” The Gambia saw action off Okinawa, Formosa and Japan. “We supported four British carriers and had quite a lot of attacks from suicide bombers,” Mr Sutcliffe said. “Some found it scary but as a gunner I found it exciting.” The Gambia had the honour of firing the last hostile shots of the Second World War when bombing the Kamaishi iron works.

Four vets in contingent The fourth Marlborough Second World War veteran travelling to Noumea for Anzac Day later this month is Keith Gibb of Blenheim. He will join fellow Marlborough men and over 80 other New Zealand World War Two veterans taking part in the 70th anniversary commemorations of New Zealand’s involvement in the war in the Pacific. “I’m looking forward to it,” said Mr Boyd who was a radar operator with the RNZAF and completed a ten and a half months tour of duty in 1943-44. “I was with a ground control unit in the Solomon Islands; we controlled night fighters.” The veterans will attend an Anzac Day service in Noumea on April 25 and a

Brightest of them all Brightening up the day at the Springlands Lifestyle Village Mobility Games on Sunday was Beverley Mackenzie. She took out the prize for the best decorated mobility scooter and also proved successful in the mobility races. Among the items she used to create her hat were some chocolate wrappings.

“I ate the chocolates,” she said. The village manager Naomi Nailer said the games were a success with fine weather and everyone enjoying themselves with mobility races, bowls and skittles. “It’s just fun for our residents and we want family and the community to come along,” she said. Three weeks after winning $10.8 million with Lotto Powerball First Division, a Blenheim family has claimed their prize and are seeking to retain their privacy. It’s not usual for big winners to take so long to officially claim their prize, but the close-knit family wanted to consult financial experts and ensure they were adequately prepared to take this prize on-board, said NZ Lotteries’ corporate communications manager Emilia Mazur “We encourage all big winners to seek professional financial advice to help create a sound financial plan

for what they want to do with their money in the short, medium and long term.” The winners were now coming to terms with the realisation that the big win was not just a dream for them. “Mum’s a bit of a practical joker, so when she phoned me at work to say we’d won the big one, I thought ‘yeah right’,” said the family spokesperson. “It’s not until I realised that she was actually in the Lotto shop that I started to believe her.” The Blenheim family wants to remain anonymous.

GrapeRide reaching new level By Chris Tobin Courtesy shown by Marlborough motorists during the GrapeRide on Saturday was tremendous, event spokesperson Duncan Mackenzie says. A total of 2500 cyclists took part in the popular annual event and Mackenzie said motorists had been great while the support the cyclists received around the course had been wonderful. “It helps make it a great event for visiting riders and keeps it personal,” Mackenzie said. “We’ve had huge feedback that the event is big enough and small enough to still make it personal. People are not lost in the crowd.” Seven cyclists were taken to Wairau Hospital on Saturday after having spills. “I hate to say it but that’s par for the course when you have 2500 cyclists, some of them inexperienced; there’ll always be issues,” Mackenzie said. He said the local cycling club had ridden in the event policing where required to ensure cyclist behaviour met road safety standards. “We’ve received positive feedback from the police that riders behaved themselves.” Mackenzie considered Saturday’s event was the best in the nine year history of the GrapeRide. “I’ll stick my neck out and say it’s gone to a new level.” Former Marlborough cyclist Robin Reid, 37, now based in Nelson was a popular winner of the elite Speed Bunnies 101km in a record time of 2hr 21min 1sec. He first won the event back in 2005. Joe Chapman, of Dunedin was second

After more than three months of water restrictions, Renwick’s water supply has recovered sufficiently for the restrictions to be lifted. Marlborough District Council operations & maintenance engineer, Stephen Rooney, said cooperation from Renwick residents, and a small amount of rain, meant limits on garden irrigation could be lifted as of Monday this week.

Marlborough gets new private hospital By Kat Duggan Churchill Private Hospital and Specialist Centre will be officially opening the doors of its new building at 9am tomorrow. Hospital general manager, Nikki Bennett, said although the official opening was on Thursday, the hospital had opened its doors for business on Monday. “We opened the doors, and patients came in, it all looks really good, and we’ve had positive feedback so far,” she said.

Parking needs revamp, says Blenheim resident The Marlborough District Council needs to consider redesigning Blenheim’s parking meter spaces, says Ray Alexander, but the council disagrees. “At the moment the parks are restricting people’s freedom of movement,” the Blenheim resident said. He believed the spaces needed to be made bigger since the size of many vehicles, particularly SUVs, had increased, and he would like to see the first two hours of central city parking being made free. “I think they should also dispense with meters and parking in specific areas and increase the spatial distance by half.” The council’s manager for support services Dean Heiford said the existing parking spaces met NZ Transport Authority standards. Mr Alexander said having five to 10 minute parking in restricted areas to be “totally ridiculous.” “They (the council) also need a neutral person where people can go and air their concerns and I’d like to question where the parking meter money goes to.” In response to this, Mr Heiford said Marlborough Roads managed the parking contract that was held by Armourguard.

Ray Alexander concerned about parking meters in Blenheim.

“Any issues that are unable to be dealt with by both these parties come into council via myself.” He said very few did because the other two were “very good.” Mr Alexander said from his experience parking meter wardens needed PR training. “The joy of shopping in the

central part of town and human interaction is being sacrificed due to the council’s drive for economic advantage at any cost.” Mr Heiford said parking wardens had a very difficult job. “Armourguard have a very rigorous training programme for their staff which includes PR.”

‘I’m not the Joe in the story’ “It’s not me,” says vineyard contractor, Joe Zhang. The Blenheim man has been in China since January 17 and returned at the end of last month. When he did, friends asked him if he was Joe the contractor mentioned in a story the Sun published earlier this year. The Joe in the story was accused by three German back-

packers of ripping them off and denying them pay they were entitled to. “It’s not me,” Mr Zhang said. Mr Zhang has lived in Blenheim for 11 years and has been operating as a vineyard contractor for three and a half years. He employs between 40 and 90 workers, most of whom come from overseas.

Mya Blackmore won her age group at the Hawkes Bay Easter Highland Games over Easter weekend.

Youngest dancer wins By Kat Duggan A six-year-old Marlborough highland dancer has come away from the Hawkes Bay Easter Highland Games with a cup for winning the six and under category. Mya Blackmore was the youngest of 10 dancers from Marlborough Dance Centre who attended the competition in Hastings over Easter weekend. The Witherlea School student competed against dancers from all over the country, performing the Highland Fling, the Sword Dance, and the Irish Jig twice each. “The competition is marked in points, and Mya got the most points overall in her age group, so she won

[her age group] overall,” Mya’s mother, Tam Poswillo said. Mya danced with one other dancer at a time, and there were ten dancers in the six and under category, “it was really fun,” Mya said. The up and coming dancer said she was excited about winning the cup, as was her mum. “I was absolutely ecstatic, and very proud,” Mrs Poswillo said. Mya has dance practice twice a week, which was increased to nearly every day leading up to the competition. Mrs Poswillo said although Mya was the only Marlborough dancer to win her grade, all ten girls had done well and come away with prizes.

‘Harvest Scrub’ new product from The Honey Collection

THE

It has been a project nearly two years in the making but now The Honey Collection is pleased to announce the release of its latest creation, Harvest Crush Exfoliating Scrub. Manager Georgia Devlin says it has long been a dream of hers to design a scrub and after meeting local farmer and seed processor Garth Neal, her idea was launched. “A friend of mine had transported a load of kiwi fruit pomace to Garth’s processing shed and got talking to him about his seed processing. “He then put

me in contact with Garth who showed me what he was doing with Marlborough grape seeds and I immediately knew it would be a perfect product to design an exfoliant scrub with,” she says. Garth, a fifth generation Marlburian, recognised the potential for grape seed to be used in the Nutracuticals and WellBeing industries and began his trials in 1993. This year Garth will be drying 50 tonne of grape seed which he dries, cleans and defats to take out the oil. The material he is left with he then mills down to fine particles which is then supplied to

The Honey Collection. Georgia has blended natural Active UMF Manuka Honey with the grape seed along with other natural ingredients to create Harvest Crush. Invigorating and refreshing, Harvest Scrub gently removes impurities, dead skin and the dull surface layers to reveal a healthy, glowing complexion. It can also help fight the early signs of skin aging and improves circulation. “The response we have had to Harvest Scrub has been overwhelming both locally and nationally and we look forward to more people trying it,” Georgia says. Harvest Scrub is available at The Honey Collection on Grove Road.

DivorceCare returns Story and Photo by Kat Duggan DivorceCare began their 2013 separation seminar on Monday, a programme which is open to anyone in Marlborough who needs support with a relationship breakdown. The group has been running in the community for the past 14 years, and has been successful in supporting participants to heal and grow through their divorce or separation. Sue Gosling took part in the programme in 2010, and has returned as a volunteer on the course, which has a mixture of men and women, of all ages. “It’s an absolutely amazing course, I wanted to pass on to others the healing I got,” she said. A team of five volunteers, as well as a lawyer and a social worker deliver the course, covering a range of related issues, including anger, depression, loneliness, spirituality, new relationships, children and divorce, forgiveness,

reconciliation, and moving on. Course organiser, Mary Butler, said the course was an opportunity for people to get together with others in a similar situation and work through their grief. “It’s about helping put people get back together, again...we’re a group of volunteers who have been through similar situations, and we want to help people,” she said. Anybody who needed extra support could also continue to see

the councillor, who works with the DivorceCare group. The course will be run at the Nativity Church Centre on Mondays for 13 weeks from Monday April 8, until Monday July 1, at 7.30pm, at a cost of $40, could be paid in instalments. People are still welcome to join the group, and should register at the Nativity Church office, or call 578 3909 before the second session, on Monday April 15.

Pete likes a challenge Story and photo by Kat Duggan The owner of service station Challenge, in Blenheim’s Queen Street, gave himself a new challenge this year, and has grown four giant pumpkins. Pete Hydes has the biggest of the four pumpkins on display in the service station at the moment, and the public is invited to place bets over how much the pumpkin weighs, with the closest answer winning a mystery prize. “I’m not sure what the prize will be yet, but it definitely won’t be a pumpkin,” he said.

Of the four pumpkins, Mr Hyde had given one to the Salvation Army to make soup with, another he had cut up and given to people for their families, and one was still in the garden. “I don’t know how much this one weighs,” Mr Hydes said, “After a few more guesses I’ll weigh it on the bathroom scales, the last one was 41 kilos, but this one is bigger.” A lot of people have been into Challenge to look at the pumpkin and take guesses at the weight, which costs $2. “It’s not a money thing, it’s just a bit of fun,” Mr Hydes said.

Is there anyone in Blenheim who needs a friendly voice to talk to? St John is keen to hear from you. The St John Caring Caller service is a confidential free telephone friendship service available to the community. St John has a number of volunteers in Blenheim ready to support and help their fellow community members. Pam Hall, St John Community Care Manager, says the Caring Caller service contacts people who may otherwise become lonely and cut off from their community. Caring Caller volunteers make contact by telephone at a time that is mutually agreed to by both them and their client. Sometimes the phone call is a brief check to make sure the person is well, sometimes it is a longer friendship call. “For a variety of reasons, our current team of Callers no longer have anyone to call or provide support for. So we’re putting the word out to the community of Blenheim to see if there is anyone who needs their help and support.” St John Caring Callers are one important way people can stay connected with their community, says Mrs Hall. “The feedback we have had from clients in other parts of the country is that they truly appreciate having someone phone them.” If you know someone who might benefit from have a regular telephone call from a St John Caring Caller please contact Helen Faulkner on 03 578 0797 or email helen.faulkner@stjohn.org.nz. Caring Callers is a free service.

Pay as you weigh ‘air fares’ Domestic Samoan airline, Samoa Air, has made headlines around the world recently for it’s decision to introduce a “pay as you weigh” air fare system. Pay as you weigh means you literally pay for what you weigh. Every kilo you take on the plane, including yourself and your baggage

is weighed, and the price you pay for your flight is worked out on a per kilo basis. Rates vary depending on the distance flown, from $1 per kilogram on the airline's shortest domestic route to about $4.16 per kilogram for travel between Samoa and American Samoa.

The system, which has now been in place for several months in Samoa, has sparked debate all over the world, about whether this is really a fairer way to travel, or if it leads to discrimination of overweight passengers. See page 8 for public opinion comments on this topic.

Story by Celeste Lodewyk. Marlborough’s richness in vineyards and spectacular wines is being celebrated this month in a unique reunion of wine enthusiasts. The Redwood Wine Club which was formed 20 years ago will see its past and current members come together on April 20 to celebrate its history. Current president of the Redwood Wine Club Ann Morgan hopes past members will make contact and register their interest for the 20 year celebrations. “We have a wonderful dinner planned at Vines Restaurant from 7pm and the club would love for past members to join us,” Ann said.

Leading up to the celebrations, records of the club’s first meetings were uncovered with the names of original members and wines tasted. The first to be mentioned was Corbans Wine representative Bill Simpson. The Redwood Wine Club was formed from a vision of something new and unique that not only celebrated Marlborough, but also showcased the diverse wines produced locally. “One of the managers of the Redwood Tavern, John Ford and general manager John Davis had the vision of providing the opportunity of knowledge and appreciation of wines, and so the club was formed,” Ann said. By the end of 1994 the club had

The group of seven ex-Fairhall School students have been working with Marlborough District Council education officer, Annie McDonald, for the past year, to come up with the plan for the day, which aims to educate other students about environmental issues. The group of approximately 40 students attending Youth Jam will go to Whites Bay for the day,

where they will take part in three 45 minute workshops, looking at environmental issues facing the water, bush, and coast of New Zealand. The day would be funded by the Marlborough District Council, and hopes to find more young environmental leaders. “Our aim for the project is to create new leaders in our community, to change people who do not have much of an interest in our environment into young leaders, who will teach others more ecofriendly ways. The club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Vines Restaurant and enjoys not only wine tasting, but also regular presentations from wine makers, viticulturists and sales reps. There is also an opportunity to purchase the wines they have enjoyed at discounted prices. “We are lucky in Marlborough to have the co-operation of wineries and restaurants and all our presenters are experts in their fields,” Ann said. Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: What do you think about Samoa Air’s “pay as you weigh” airfares?

Ben Elsmore Christchurch

Nadja Hyson Blenheim

Hannah Lamb Blenheim

Rhianne Lamb Blenheim

Jana Neilson Blenheim

I think it’s a good thing, anything to make it cheaper is good.

I don’t think it’s fair, there’s only so much control people have over their weight, so why punish people for being who they are?

It’s a bit unfair because if you look at athletes like Jonah Lomu and stuff, it’s unfair cause they would have to pay higher fares because they’re heavy.

I don’t know, I haven’t really thought about it but I wouldn’t really like to fly with them, tall people would be disadvantaged because they are heavier, even at a healthy weight.

I’m on the fence, because it depends how far you push discrimination, is it for money revenue gathering, or just basic discrimination?

Dear Ed, Did others see the shambles in Parliament over the Prime Minister’s forgetfulness about the appointment of the “Spy Agency” (GCSB)? Direct questions from the Opposition received answers of childish arrogance from John Key. When the public sees immature, irresponsible displays by the so-called leader of the country, no wonder a million last election couldn’’t be bothered voting. The behaviour is worse than a kindergarten. Aggravating the immaturity of MPs is an inept speaker who was equally inept when he was minister of agriculture and fisheries. Bring back Lockwood Smith. Grove Road bridge Dear Ed, It must have been just before Easter as a huge convoy of cars, camper vans, freight trucks and trailers, plus tractors and grape harvesters slowly made their way into Blenheim over the Grove Road bridge. I wonder how many stopped off for a while or just thought “I’m out of here!” Of course the bridge was only one way by then. Clarkie

Urban sprawl Dear Ed, Your article (March 27) entitled “Rezoning to Start” and the Marlborough District Council’s decision to allow Blenheim to expand over flat fertile land is town planning at its worst. The idea of spreading north was recommended by Auckland Based consultants at an unnecessary cost to taxpayers. Probably they recommended other areas as shown in the

Palm trees photo-all level, productive land. Councillor David Dew said “it has taken some time to bring the strategy to this point,” because of liquefaction issues. As a former town planner my suggestion is that council spend much more time and arrive at a sensible policy in line with good town planning principles and avoiding encroaching onto productive land. Tony Orman

Global Warming Dear Ed, I heard carbon trading shares have dropped from $25 to about $3. The Kyoto thing is a farce. Using money (carbon trading) to solve environmental problems will result in a few getting very rich and pollution not lessened. Up the Waihopai valley a foreign backed company has bought two big sheep/cattle stations for carbon

trading. They have removed all stock, made dozens of messy roads, killed all ground cover, be it native or otherwise. Where is the benefit to NZ in that? I understand UK’s Lord Monckton is due to speak in Blenheim soon on the climate change “con”. Anyone know any details? Ken Lloyd

Dear Ed, I am writing in reply to the text message in the Blenheim Sun on Friday April 5th. The text was titled ‘Golden Opportunity Missed.’ It said ‘Thousands of visitors, great weather, great sights & air show. But no shopping. Surely the council’s Chamber of Commerce should have allowed business without penalty! Wakey Wakey. Plan ahead for these big events that we need’. As the general manager of the Chamber of Commerce I need to clear up a couple of points. The Chamber of Commerce is not run or funded by the Marlborough Dis-

trict Council. We are an incorporated society that exists to advance business in Marlborough. Neither the Chamber of Commerce nor the council control Easter trading laws. Easter trading is controlled by the Government. The Chamber of Commerce has worked for a number of years now to try and convince politicians to change Easter trading rules in Marlborough, however as yet we haven’t been successful. Brian Dawson General manager, Marlborough Chamber of Commerce

Dear Ed, It’s a pity that the council wants to remove the palm trees from Blenheim. I think that they give Blenheim a unique personality. They could always replace them in our cul-de-sac here in Endeavour St and put the rather large trees that they now have here in town. Also the council is asking people to prune their overhanging trees in town. We have been asking the council to prune the trees here in Endeavour for a while now but they are reluctant to do so. When we bought here we were told that the trees would not grow more than four metres. I think that they are now about 10 to 11 metres high and still growing, and starting to throw a lot of shade onto our houses which we don’t want. People built here because there was not a shade problem. The council says they endeavour to be practical and fair. Fair would be to cut our trees down to about 4 metres, the height we were told that they would grow to in the first place. Yours truly, M Whitmee

Ashwood Resthome Dear Ed, We would just like to acknowledge and give heaps of praise to the staff and management of Ashwood Park Resthome. Mum (Linda) went there last October and passed away last week. They were like an extended family to her, treating her with love, care and dignity right up to the end. My wife Diana wants to book a room for herself now because they were so fantastic. Well done Ashwood Park, and thank you so much. Brian & Diana Warren Wairau Valley

Better living, but don’t take our word for it! R

etirees Judith and Allan Hutton weren’t considering building a new home, until they looked at an established Peter Ray Home built some years ago. They liked the home, says Judith, especially the living areas, but it was a bedroom short. So they decided to phone Peter Ray Homes. They spoke with Donna Lee. Donna owns Peter Ray Homes with her husband Rowan. Right from their very first meeting with Donna everything went smoothly. The thought of building was easy because her husband Allan was a builder, although “he was going to watch every nail,” she joked. There was no need to worry. Donna and Rowan had

an and Lynette Sutherland have been living in their Peter Ray Home for two years, after they decided to upgrade and move into something new. It’s the third house they have built, the previous one was twenty years ago. They had a layout design in mind, and Peter Ray Homes were more than happy to accommodate their wishes. Lynette said she and Ian were able to be as hands on as they liked during the building process, and Rowan and Donna provided them with good advice when they needed it. “They presented us with the best options, together with the costs, and pros and cons for each option, but left us to make the final decisions ,” Ian and Lynette said. Ian said Rowan was excellent with

quality control. “ He monitored everything and was fussier than us! He checked that everything was as we wanted it and if anything wasn’t quite up to his (very high) standards then it was fixed before handing the house over to us. Furthermore, the follow up was great. They checked in on us several times following the move in to see if any problems had been discovered that needed to be put right”. Ian and Lynette said building a house can normally be stressful, but building with Peter Ray Homes had made the process much more enjoyable than than they had imagined. They said that Rowan and Donna were relaxed, friendly, and so helpful. “We’re very happy with the house , and we wouldn’t hesitate to build with them again.”

outhlanders Judy and Trevor Grey moved to Blenheim early 2012 to be close to family. Judy says moving to Blenheim and building their first home was beyond their wildest dream for these retirees. “We looked at showhomes in Invercargill, but didn’t see the right plan for us. So Trevor decided to draw our own plans. “We contacted Rowan at Peter Ray Homes. He drew the plans to the right specs, and presto we had our plans back in three days and made the decision to go with it. “The reason other plans didn’t feel right was because of the unusual shape of our section in Blenheim. “Now house and section complement each other. Judy says the entire process was easy. Judy has previously worked for a kitchen consultant, so

everything under control. Allan says today Peter Ray Homes have the buying power and it is so cost effective to build, without compromising on quality. Donna said it would take 16 weeks to build, and that’s exactly how long it took. A plus building with Peter Ray was the helpful advice received from interior designer Simone Hill. “She was extremly efficient and matched our furniture with the new house colours.” Allan commented they had very good builders and being a builder he knows. “The end result, we were totally satisfied Peter Ray did an excellent build for us. We have already recommended Peter Ray homes to friends. We were very pleased.”

im and Anna Gifford did plenty of research before building their new Peter Ray Home. Tim is a valuer and knows about these things. They moved their existing rental home to another section they owned and built a 4 bedroom 250sq home in Hiley St close to town, with a river boundary. Tim says Rowan’s knowledge of the building trade and being a builder, and not just a salesman made the decision easy. “I knew I could trust Rowan, he has very high standards.

she was particular about the kitchen. But there were no hassles. “The subbies that worked on our house were excellent and we had no problems. We visited most days while they built our home and we felt welcomed. Both Judy and Trevor agree building a new house with Peter Ray Homes is excellent value for money. They built a 4 bedroom home 235sq and they are very happy with the finished product. “It’s easy” says Judy. They also installed solar power water heating. Trevor cannot understand why more homes in Blenheim haven’t considered this option when building, with the amount of sunshine hours we have here. It is so very cost effective when building and saves on the power bill.

“The new housing market is competitive, so you get excellent value for money,” says Tim. Tim and Anna’s home is a bit upspec, with polished exposed concrete floors in the kitchen and living area, which has it’s advantages with two young children. The inside colours are neutral, but they have feature colours in most rooms. The front door is bright red aluminium a very trendy touch. Tim’s idea. And yes they would not hesitate to build again with Donna and Rowan from Peter Ray Homes.

From Picton to the world By Kat Duggan When Rebekah Codlin first decided to make being an artist a full time career, she knew there was a big risk involved with relying on her art to be her only income.

Picton artist, Rebekah Codlin with her painting, African Rain, which is currently up for auction on Trademe, for charity, Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch.

The 19-year-old from Picton considered becoming an accountant, thinking it would provide a more stable income and lifestyle, but after displaying her art within the Picton and Blenheim communities, decided to follow her passion. “There’s always that risk with being a fulltime artist, because the stereotype is that artist’s don’t succeed, but as soon as I got a positive response [from the community] I said let’s get into it, let’s do it,” she said. Two years after her decision to pursue art full time, the self-taught artist will be having her very first solo exhibition in July, and currently has a piece of work on display outside the

Christchurch Museum, alongside ten of New Zealand’s top artists, as part of a charity auction for the Ronald McDonald House. Locally, Rebekah has art displayed in four local restaurants, Café Cortado in Picton, The Slip Inn in Havelock, Scotch Bar and Brancott Estate Heritage Centre, where she also paints live most Saturdays, and some Sundays. Being home-schooled from age 5 to 18 at her home in Ngakuta Bay, Rebekah has big dreams for the future, but still enjoys the comforts of home. “My ultimate goal is just to get better, to spread out, hopefully into Australia, I’ve sold a lot of work overseas, particularly in the UK,

Germany, Canada, Australia and New Caledonia, Marlborough is really good for tourists…I may be able to work from New Zealand, I just love New Zealand, it really depends on how my work does here.” Rebekah says her parent’s are still a great help for her, with organising the business side of things, and managing her emails while she is busy painting in her studio, which doubles as her bedroom, now in Picton. “I’m just a complete mess, I’m not organised at all, but I manage to get by just…mum helps a lot, she is always really busy, but helps a lot, and dad has some pretty wise advice too,” she said, “I’m really gonna push my art, and put

everything into it, for as long as I can, I am positive I can make it work,” she said. Her first exhibition will be at Terrace Downs Luxury Resort, at the base of Mt Hutt from July 5, until August 1, and people interested in attending the dinner can contact the art director there for special accommodation rates, at rachael.inch@terracedowns.co.nz. The painting (above), which is up for auction for Ronald McDonald House, can be viewed and bid on at www.trademe.co.nz, auction number 579049788, for the month of April. Rebekah also has a website, which she can be contacted through, www.rebekahcodlinart. co.nz.

Eliminate mould before it affects your health Not only is mould unsightly but it can cause severe health problems, especially when present in large quantities. Potential allergens such as pollen, mould spores and dust mite are commonplace in the daily environment and are found both inside and outside the home. Although most individuals are exposed to these allergens on a regular basis with little impact on health, regular exposure to some allergens, particularly indoor moulds can cause more severe health problems. Fungi, or moulds, are an abundant group of micro-organisms that play a crucial role in the degradation process of organic matter and organisms in the environment. Although moulds are fully functional in the outside environment, they can potentially pose a significant threat to health when transferred into the home. Areas which provide warmth, moisture, a high level of humidity and a continual supply of

organic matter and dirt, such as the bathroom and kitchen are prime locations. Activities such as drying laundry on indoor clothes driers or tumble dryers which are not vented to the outside can increase humidity levels in the home, consequently encouraging mould growth in the home. In addition, water damaged

Now that they have retired to Australia, new owners Bu-nga Krataitong and Nuttavut Rodsienglum have officially taken over the business. A free whooping cough vaccine was made available to pregnant women from January 1, 2013 to help protect their new-born babies from this serious disease. There were more than 6700 notified cases of whooping cough since August last year, of which more than 200 babies under the age of one-year of age required hospital treatment. Until this outbreak finishes all pregnant women between 28 and 38 weeks of pregnancy can get a free Boostrix vaccine from their GP. Whooping cough is a very contagious disease and figures show that 70 percent of babies who contract the disease in the first weeks of life, catch it from their parents or other close family members. Babies are most vulnerable to whooping cough which can cause them to stop breathing and can lead to blindness, brain damage and in severe cases, death. For more information women can talk to their midwives who will refer them to their general practitioner or practice nurse

Renwick to host largest pig hunt The organizers of New Zealand’s largest pig hunting competition, Matt and Lisa Willis of Hooked on Boars Magazine will again be bringing the masses to Renwick this winter. The annual Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp will be held the weekend of July 19-21 at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre, attracting hunters from all over the country. Last year alone saw close to 500 entries which included around 400 open entries, 45 young guns and nearly 100 juniors and the winning boar caught by Dave Neal weighed in at 102.5kg. The event will see all manor of activities taking fold. Hunters will charge to the hills on the Friday in pursuit of that prize winning boar.

Then on Saturday night the whole community can drag out those old 70’s and 80’s super hip clothes for a great night of live music and entertainment and dance the night away to all the great hits. Sunday will see the hunters bringing in their hard won trophies and be able to tell a few yarns about the ones that got away while enjoying a cold beer. There will be plenty of fun events with many stall holders promoting all manner of goods throughout the afternoon leading up to the main prize giving at 5pm. “We’re really looking to make this a special event for the community of Renwick, a sort of ‘Mid Winter Renwick Festival says organizer Matt Willis.

Community hall update By Celeste Lodewyk It has been an eventful year for the Renwick Community Memorial Hall with storm damage, earthquake risk evaluations and planned upgrades keeping its committee busy during past months. January’s wind storm ripped two large panels off the end of the building damaging the iron roof and the ceiling inside. Repair work is being carried out by Hartland Builders and Hutchison Price Painters which is being paid for by the Marlborough District Council which insures the hall. “The committee is hugely grateful to the Council and thank them for their help,” says chairman Murray Newman. This has not however, hampered the committee’s progress in finalising plans for the hall’s refurbishment which Murray says he hopes will soon be made public. “We are currently finalising concept plans for the refurbishment and will report back to the community in the very near future. “For now though we will be seeing

some new outside doors being fitted and repairs made to others before winter sets in,” he says. Another positive piece of news is the hall’s recent Earthquake Performance rating following an evaluation carried out by Opus. “The Ministry of Education engaged Opus to do the initial evaluation which came back with a 72 percent rating of a new building standard. “The hall is classed as a Grade B moderate risk building which is great news which the committee is very pleased with,” Murray says. The hall is currently being used most week nights by different sports groups.

SATURDAY 13th April Gates open at 5pm RACING STARTS AT 6PM

Last Friday afternoon Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers’ & Premiers’ School’s Competition met and competed in the sixth round for this year. Only one more week of round robin play is left before finals on Friday April 19. Fairhall Slushies played Redwoodtown All Stars in the year 7/8 grade. Some good serving was seen from Fairhall’s Mae McDonald and Redwoodtown’s Kele Cheshire and

Brianna Earnshaw. Fairhall’s team work and moving for the ball was exceptional and won them the game taking all three sets with ease 25-14, 25-14 and 25-12. Top points for this game keeps Fairhall in the run for finals. In the premier grade, the Renwick Smashers seem to be making a last ditch run for finals night and the points they gained and their opposition, St Mary’s Spikers lost, helped their cause.

Club producing world class sailors By Kat Duggan Blenheim boy Oliver Cowley will be going to Japan at the end of April, to compete in the International Friendship Japan Junior Yacht Club Regatta. The 12-year-old Fairhall School student sails for Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, and will be going with another young sailor from Auckland. Oliver will be in the optimist section, and his father, Ben Cowley, said Oliver had mixed feelings about the world class regatta. “He’s excited, and has a lot of anticipation and nervousness about

doing really well, and representing New Zealand really well,” he said. Sailors from all over the world, including Korea, Thailand, Singapore and Japan will be competing at the regatta, where Oliver will be competing in the 15 and under age group. Oliver has been sailing for three years, and just won a cup at the national sailing competition, for having the 'best result for a first nationals,’ in Timaru. Another Queen Charlotte Yacht Club sailor, 14-year-old Alastair Gifford, will also be representing New Zealand this year, sailing with

Fellow sailor, Hamish Clark missed out on the worlds team by just three points, but did make the Optimist North American Champs in Bermuda this year. Taylor Burn and Henry Gibbs impressed at the 420 Nationals at Takapuna in Auckland over Easter weekend, coming second by just one point, while Liese Belgrave and Nicole Davies came 16th in the same competition.

and a South Island select group providing competitor numbers allow. Eastern States Speedway stockcar driver representive, Alice Stone was still awaiting confirmation from some teams although interest has been strong. The possibility for late entries to be received from Greymouth and a South Island Team is likely if competitor numbers allow, she said. The event has been made possible with the sponsorship for the meeting from The Marlborough Muscle Car and Bike Museum in Grove Road. Owner, Terry Brown has spent over 25 years competing

in the sport and his family have also been very involved throughout the years. Before the 6pm race meeting, competitor’s cars will be safety checked whilst on display at the Railway station Car park between 2pm- 4pm this Saturday. Brown will also offer half price admission to his museum across the road whilst the display is running. The public are invited to check out the cars, meet the drivers and get discounted entry to the Marlborough Muscle Car and Bike Museum on Saturday afternoon before gates opening to racing at 5pm with racing starting at 6pm at the Renwick track.
