Animal dumping worries SPCA By Emily Elliott Unwanted animals are a problem for the SPCA, especially over the summer period when cats who have been abandoned by their owners have litters. On Thursday alone, Marlborough SPCA Office manager, Kate Horrey, said she had seven animals brought in - all before 1pm. “The holiday period was steady, but since we reopened on Wednesday there has been a steady stream and heaps of phone calls,” Ms Horrey said. On Tuesday, two kittens (pictured) were brought in which had been dumped in a box in a paddock by Hawkesbury Road. According to Ms Horrey, they were lucky to be found before they died from exposure. “They’re only five and a half weeks old, they should only be off their mother at seven weeks,” said Jess Monk, the animal care manager for Marlborough SPCA. By Chris Tobin The organiser of a protest which be held next Saturday against the spybase at Waihopai say they will highlight that New Zealanders are being spied on by the Government. “The Kim Dotcom case has added a new dimension,” said Murray Horton, of Christchurch, the secretary/organiser of the Anti-Bases Campaign. “The Prime Minister, who is also Minister of the NZ Government Communications Security Bureau (GCBS), admitted in September that Dotcom, a New Zealand resident was illegally spied on.” Mr Horton said well known columnist Chris Trotter had stated

this week that few New Zealanders, before Dotcom’s arrest, had been aware that the GCSB regularly co-operated with the New Zealand Police by intercepting cellphone and email messages of their fellow citizens. “Trotter also said in his column that few would know that the Prime Minister could sign a document suppressing any and all references to the GCSB in a New Zealand court of law,” Mr Horton said. Around 60 people attended a similar protest against the spybase last year in Blenheim and Mr Horton said 30 people had already made known they would be attending next Saturday’s protest.

He expected others would turn up on the day. “We’ve been hammering away for over 20 years and will continue to do so,” Mr Horton said. “The purpose of the protest is to keep pointing the finger, rather than keeping it (the spybase) secret.” The protest will take place at the Waihopai base’s main gate from 11am on Saturday, January 19. From 1pm there will be speeches from Adrian Leason, a Ploughshares peace activist who was acquitted of puncturing one of the inflatable domes which covered a satellite dish at the base; Green

Country Music Awards set to rock By Emily Elliott Blenheim will be holding it’s annual Country Music Awards for the 22nd year in a row next weekend. Committee organisers have spent a year organising the event, and have been dubbed ‘The Fab Four’. Ross and Pam Akerblom have been part of the Blenheim Country Music Club for 22 years, Lynette Mason for 18 years, and Heather Lee, the treasurer, for one year. Marie Chambers is in charge of catering for the upcoming weekend, a significantly large job that has made her part of The Fab Four. According to Mr Akerblom, there are still dozens of Country Music Awards held all over New Zealand every year. “A lot of people are keen on the competition, and the prize money is big for what they have to do,” he said. This year there are around 140

entries, with the youngest competitor aged four, and the eldest aged 77-years. “There is a lot of good talent locally,” Mr Akerblom said. According to treasurer, Heather Lee, the awards take a year to organise. “We go year to year, it costs about twenty thousand, and we have to get a lot of sponsors, who we’re thankful for.” “We also have a lot of cabarets throughout the year to help raise money,” Ms Lee said. The awards are still bringing in a good crowd of both competitors and onlookers. “Finals night usually has 300400 people, and we encourage people to book early - we’ve been known to sell out,” Mr Akerblom said. His wife, life member, and one of the Fab Four, Pam Akerblom says Country Music has been their life. “We slid into it accidentally and

Vietnam vets to meet in Blenheim By Chris Tobin Veterans from the Vietnam War will hold an informal reunion in Blenheim next weekend. They are former members of the 1st New Zealand Services Medical Team and comprise ex-army, navy and air force personnel. Reunion organiser Lindsay Grenfell of Tirimoana said the idea for a get-together came when a former member who now lived in Australia returned home for Christmas. “He hasn’t been back for 15 years and while here he thought it a good idea to catch up with some of the aging crew. “What started as a few has now snowballed to 15. The oldest is one of our doctors at 91. The youngest is our visitor from Australia and myself at 64.” The 1st NZ Services Medical Team consisted of doctors and nurses (male only) who were based at Bong Son in the province of Binh Dinh and completed tours of duty which lasted up to 12 months. The unit was based at Bong Son from 1967 until 1971. “Work at the hospital involved medical, surgical and maternity. Surgery was extensive and upon casualties, war and road traffic,” Mr Grenfell said. “Primarily our job was to go to teach the local staff so we could walk out one day. They’d be quite capable of taking over; this was achieved to some extent. “We lost a teammate over there. Air Force Sergeant Gordon Watt was killed on March 1, 1970.” The hospital was destroyed when North Vietnamese forces took the area. By that time the New Zealand unit

Tornado hits Kaikoura A small tornado took the roof off a house and slammed it into another on Beach Rd in Kaikoura yesterday morning. The wild weather caused power to be lost to several locations, and reports stated that two mini twisters were also sighted. The fierce winds were widespread across most of the South and lower North Islands, and with gusts over 130km/h reported in many places.

Carparking meeting Central Blenheim parking will again be under the spotlight at a meeting to be held next Tuesday. The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce CBD group has arranged the meeting which is open to all retailers. Debbie Carter from the chamber said those attending would have the chance to discuss issues concerning them with the Marlborough District Council’s consultants, Traffic Design Group. The meeting will be at Scenic Hotels Marlborough next Tuesday evening at 6pm.

had left. “We’ve had one reunion in Wellington 18 years ago,” Mr Grenfell said. “ In 1998 a group of us went back to the little town we were in and they had built another hospital. It was near where the old hospital used to be.” One of the team doctors who will be attending the reunion is Brian McMahon, the Anzac of the Year in 2011. Dr McMahon served as a medical officer in Vietnam in 1969 and ended his miliary career as the Director General of Defence Medical Services in 1983.

Landfill charges rise

Animal abandonment an issue Continued from page 1 “They’re not wild as they’re very tame, so someone has obviously been looking after them before hand.” According to Ms Monk, this summer the SPCA has had a few kitten dumps. She believes it would only take a small phone call explaining the situation to help greatly and avoid the kitten dumps. Over the year, the amount of kittens brought in was not as bad as usual, mainly due to the free de-sexing vouchers the SPCA gave out the previous year. “Last year we also did a TNR (Trap, Nutur, Return) for as many wild cats we could get our hands on, so there’s not that many wild kittens out there,” Ms Monk said.

On average, the SPCA sometimes have up to 40 unwanted cats being held and cared for at one time, and can hold eight dogs at a time. Their facilities also contain a lot of rabbit hutches and bird cages. “We also have to have kennels available for animal abuse cases.” According to Ms Monk, Marlborough SPCA gets a fair share of animal abuse cases. “Luckily we work really well with our animal control inspector, and we try to do more educating than taking animals off people, unless they really are being abused.” As for abandoned Flirt and Caspian (pictured), Ms Monk is in the process of finding a foster family

for them to live with until they’re at least 1kg old. “Once they’ve had their vaccinations, which the SPCA provide, they’ll be up for adoption. “Fostering is a lot nicer than being in a cage, as they get to be around people,” said Ms Monk. People can also help the SPCA by checking their pets have suitable food, water, shelter, and exercise over the Summer, making sure they desex their cats and dogs before they are six months old, and responsibly rehoming unwanted pets themselves. You can also help by donating money, food, and kitty litter to the SPCA. From the beginning of this month, Marlborough landfill users have to pay $5.75 more per tonne of waste, while refuse transfer stations will charge $2 more per cubic metre. The Marlborough District Council said the new fees reflected increased operating costs and the emissions trading scheme. Previous charges for the landfill and transfer stations were $95 per tonne and $27 per cubic metre. The fee increase will apply at the transfer stations in Blenheim, Picton, Havelock, Wairau Valley, Seddon and Rai Valley.

Retail sales increase on last year Business inbrief

Black Rose Tattoo Emporium The Sun would like to correct information in the article regarding the opening of Willy Wills’ new store. Petina Parkin was quoted to work for Mr Wills, however she is still working in Christchurch. She is a fan of Mr Wills’ work, and as Mr Wills joked, his biggest ambassador.

Building consents drop New Zealand building consents fell 5.4 percent in November. The number of new dwellings consented fell to 1,423 in November from 1,505 a month earlier. There were just 39 consents issued for new apartments in November, all retirement village units, and 64 percent lower than a year earlier. On an annual basis, apartment consents are up 52 percent to 1,665.

Transactions increased 2.8 percent and value rose 2.5 percent from $55.2m in 2011 to $56.5m. Hallenstein’s Blenheim manager Anita Hill said she noticed the difference. “There were more people around town all through December and

By Chris Tobin Major refurbishment and earthquake strengthening work is about to being in Farmers which Blenheim manager Karen Stevenson says will make the store “absolutely beautiful.” The front section of the shop fronting onto Market St will be blocked off during the work which will start soon and a new temporary main entrance will be installed on High St. This will remain in place until June. “The entire store will be refurbished to an amazing standard; everything will be new,” Ms Stevenson said. Farmers extended into the old mall area in October which saw new fittings installed and an extension of the floor space. Ms Stevenson said when the refurbishment is completed in June the cosmetics area will stretch all along the frontage on Market St. “We’ll be getting six cosmetic houses; we only have two at the moment. Paymark reported significant growth in the electronics sector including computers and phones with sales up 31.7 per cent annually. The company also saw growth in clothing and apparel, and jewellery, up 20.7 percent and 24.4 percent respectively. Mr Whiston said spending was still being affected by the slower economic growth since the global financial crisis began but the end of the year results were encouraging. “We hope to see this momentum continue in 2013.” Paymark processes about 75 percent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand.

Nationwide the country was out spending up large on Boxing Day this year with sales jumping in value to $120m compared with $105.8m the year before Paymark head of sales and marketing Paul Whiston said the strong Boxing Day figures were a great finish to what had been an already positive month of spending and a return to growth. “This is the first time in five years that we’ve seen double digit growth and we’re rapt for retailers.”

Soon it will be a clear section. Work was well underway demolishing the former Water Dynamics Building at 38-40 Main Street when the Sun visited on Wednesday afternoon. The site is on the corner opposite Burger King and will be the new location for Guthrie Bowron when owners Katrina and Colin Legge move from their existing Seymour St address.

Ready to rock in London By Emily Elliott He is all set to go to London and intern in West End before he heads back to complete his third year at Toi Whakaari in Wellington next semester. Talented Blenheim boy, Tom Knowles, is excited about the opportunities the acting intership will provide for him, and the prospect of working on some of the biggest shows in the industry. Now all he needs is the last little bit of help to get him there, which he is doing through a fundraising concert. “I’ve had to fund the whole trip myself, so whatever I raise will go

towards different things like being able to attend shows,” Tom said. “Bascially, it’s supporting me to go and do what I want to do.” According to Tom, the fundraising concert showcases other local talent and is mostly based around musical theatre. The concert will feature a variety of songs from many different and popular shows, such as Les Misrables, Joseph and the amazing Technicoloured Dream Coat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Eagles, and much more. “It’s an event for all ages, especially music lovers!” Locals Emma Logan, David Mose-

ley, Max Bicknell, and Fred Wiseman will be perfoming, among others. It has taken Tom effort to put the concert together, a task he believes helps him for what he wants to do after his studies - organise shows. “It should be a good night, and a great way to kick off a Saturday night,” Tom said. The concert starts at 7:30pm at Marlborough Boys’ College Hall on Saturday, tickets are $10 at the door.

Police have released the name of a man who died when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck on SH6 between Nelson and Rai Valley on Wednesday afternoon. He was Allan Ford, aged 73 years, from Horsham, West Sussex in the UK. Mr Ford was holidaying in New Zealand for several weeks. He was with four other riders heading north towards Rai Valley when the collision occurred on the Rai Valley side of Serpentine straight shortly after 2pm.

The motorcycle caught fire on impact and police believe the motorcyclist was killed instantly. The driver of the truck, which was carrying LPG cylinders, was shaken but unharmed. The LPG cylinders were not involved in the fire. Victim Support is assisting his companions and the truck driver. Police have spoken to some witnesses but would still like to hear from anyone who witnessed the accident. A serious crash investigation is under way.

Museum origin Dear Ed, With repect may I suggest to your correspondent, History Buff, (Sun, January 9) that being what he says he is he should start with the name Brayshaw Park and go to the museum and ask for guidance in the archives. There he would learn the origins of our collection and how and why it came to be in the location it is in.

When I have needed information with regard to local beginnings, I have always been treated with respect and given all the assistance I have needed. I am sure he would learn all he needs to know as to why we wouldnt dream of moving it to any other location.. Marygold Miller, Blenheim

I went thru the museum in the hols, was great. Of course its at Brayshaw Park. That whole area is dedicated to historic buildings, clothing, machinery, trains and cars. Not sure where the industrial park comes in. I loved it.

Try before you buy Story & photo by Celeste Lodewyk “Rather than buying unnecessary toys, hire them from us,” says Blenheim Salvation Army Toy Library volunteer Nickie Pharland. Nickie and her team of volunteers are busy sorting toys in preparation of the up and coming Toy Library Info and Promotion Day on January 24. The day starts with the under five dance group ‘Glow Bugs’ at 10am which is followed by a picnic by the playground at the Salvation Army Building on the corner of George and Henry Streets at 11am. The public is encouraged to bring along their families, bring a picnic and enjoy the bouncy castle and playground. There will be plenty of information about the toys and the library. “Toy Library is a great way for parents to try toys before buying them. “Fees are low, from 30 cents up to $5 for two weeks hire which is affordable, so make sure you come along and see what we have to offer,” says Nickie. Blenheim Salvation Army Toy Library volunteers Cheyne Pharland (12) and Nickie Pharland get busy sorting toys ahead of the library's Info Day this month.

Time limits focusing on driver safety The introduction of time limits for learner and restricted licences is part of this Government’s continuing focus on the safety of young and novice drivers, Associate Minister of Transport Simon Bridges announced yesterday. “The Government intends to limit learner and restricted licence periods to five years to encourage drivers to move through the Graduated Driver Licensing System (GDLS),” said Mr Bridges. Currently 70 per cent of learner licence holders (205,810) have held their licence for more than two years and 37 per cent have held them for more than six years; 56 per cent of restricted licence holders (173,129) have held their licences for more than three years and 32 per cent have held them for more than six years. When people spend two or more years on a learner licence and three or more years on a restricted licence, licence pooling is said to occur. “The GDLS never intended drivers

to stay on a learner or restricted licence indefinitely. What these drivers need to do is demonstrate their skills and competence and graduate to a full licence in a reasonable time.” Pooling licence holders are also incurring high numbers of infringements for licence condition breaches. In 2011, 71 per cent of learner licence breaches were incurred by pooled licence holders while 36 per cent of restricted licence breaches were incurred by pooled restricted licence holders. “This level of offending indicates a lack of respect for the conditions of learner and restricted licences. It is important that these conditions are not seen as optional and we need to reinforce the message that compliance with licence conditions reduces risk. “Limiting the time that learner and restricted licences can be held is going to encourage these licence holders to progress through the GDLS in a timely way and become skilled and safe drivers.” The time limits on learner and restricted licences changes will be enacted through a transport rule change, which will include public consultation by the NZ Transport Agency. The new rule will come into force within two years.

Why not plant oregano

Oregano is super easy to plant. Got a corner in your vege garden that looks a bit empty? Simply dig a little hole and plant your oregano seedling. You don’t even have to wait for oregano to grow to harvest from it but if you let it get established before you start picking it’s leaves it won’t just be a one hit wonder of a herb. And that’s it.

Hanging basket tips Head down to your local Warehouse and grab yourself a basket and a plastic saucer to fit in the base.

If you want to have plants growing out the side of the basket purchase some sphagnum moss and a basket with small spaces in between the wires (so the moss won’t fall out the sides). If you’d rather just plant the top of the basket like you would a pot – grab a basket with a coconut fibre inside. Make sure your basket has a diameter of at least 350mm wide. A large one will retain more water, which means it’s less likely to dry out. While you’re out, get some seedlings to grow in your basket. You could grow oregano in it. But why not add some parsley, thyme, basil or cherry tomatoes in the middle? You could even add strawberries to the sides. They take up very little room and the basket allows them to stay clear of the ground – which makes it harder for pests to get them. Once you’ve got your tools and seedlings it’s time to get started. Place your basket on top of a bucket so the round bottom doesn’t rock around. It’s a good idea to soak the sphagnum moss in a bucket of water.

The sphagnum is a natural sponge – which means it will soak up water and provide the plants with ongoing moisture. Plus it stops the soil falling out! Once your moss is damp, place it along the bottom of the basket and approximately 50mm up the sides. Next, sit the plastic saucer on top of the moss and pour in potting mix until it reaches the same height as the moss. Use a slow release fertiliser because it will feed the plants for up to four months – until you re-do the baskets for winter. If you’re growing plants down the side of your basket now’s the time to lie their roots across the potting mix and poke the top of the seedlings and leaves through the sides of the basket. Then add another lay of moss over the top. This time place the moss 100mm up the insides of the basket. Add another layer of potting mix and seedlings, put another layer of sphagnum moss down and take it all the way up the insides of the basket. Fill the container to the top with potting mix. Now, simply plant your other seedlings.

Mulch before holidays to protect the soil from heat.

Livingstone daisy

holiday, or while you’re at the bach? You’re going to plant livingstone daisies. These colourful plants grow to around 30cm high and thrive in summer conditions – dry, sunny and windy. They’re perfect for planting now – before you go away. They’re great for planting next to your caravan or bach because they don’t mind being left to their own devices.

Send in your photo of your child (or grandchild) enjoying time in the garden. Include their name and age. Email your photo to: katrina@blenheimsun.co.nz We’ll publish these on our Gardening page as space permits.

TOP TASKS Install irrigation

Mulch, mulch and mulch January is the time of year when many of you will take a break and get away from home. And, if you’re lucky – the sun will shine and the weather will be warm. But what are you going to do about your garden while you’re away? How are you going to ensure it looks in the same top form when you return? You’re going to mulch, that’s what you’re going to do. Mulch protects the soil from heat and provides a cooler soil temperature, which enables roots to pump water efficiently. This means it can survive a bit longer without watering. Though, if you’re going on holiday for a significant period of time you may need to look into self-timer sprinkler watering. And what are you going to plant at this time of year – before you head off on

Gardening

Pop down to your local Mega Mitre 10 and grab yourself some livingstone daisy seedlings for your home. Once you’ve got your seedlings just dig a little hole and plant. Monitor them to see if they need watering – but they like it dry so they won’t need much. Then sit back and wait for the colourful surprise on your return.

Three cheese tomato tart 2 ripe tomatoes, cut into slices 1 sheet frozen puff pastry 3 tablespoons light mayonnaise 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 2 tablespoons finely chopped basil Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, to taste Salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat oven to 400°. Lay out the tomato slices on a large sheet of paper towels. Cover with more paper towels and allow to drain for approximately 30 minutes (this is crucial to not getting a watery tart). Meanwhile, remove the sheet of puff pastry from the freezer and allow to thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes. Unfold the puff pastry onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, pinching to close any holes in the seams. Using a fork, prick the dough all over to prevent it from puffing up during baking. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise

over the entire puff pastry. Sprinkle evenly with shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. Arrange the tomato slices over the cheese. Season generously with salt and pepper. Grate a generous amount of Parmesan cheese on top and garnish with freshly chopped basil. Bake for 30 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Remove the pastry from the baking sheet and let cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Cut i nto squa res a nd ser ve immediately.

Don’t leave your vege patch without water. A week of hot sun with no rain or hose action will undo all your hardwork. If you’re going away ask for help from a neighbour to water in your absence. Or rig up a sprinkler on an automatic timer. Soak the soil thoroughly before you depart and shovel on a thick layer of mulch to trap that moisture.

Feed fruiting plants

Fertilise tomatoes, dwarf beans and eggplants. Capsicums and cucumbers also appreciate a fortnightly liquid feed after the fruit starts to set.

SUMMER TASKS FOR ROSES • Always water roses early in the morning. Tackle this before the day heats up and target the roots if possible rather than the foliage. Roses need water to take in fertiliser through their roots, plus wet foliage can turn mildewy. If you water in the heat of the day, droplets of water act like a lens and can burn the leaves. • Never spray roses in sunshine or they’ll burn. About this time of year, spray your roses with something, either to nourish the plants or kill off the nasties. Do this on a cloudy day preferably. • Keep deadheading and picking your roses. If you leave dead flowers on the bush, the rose has no incentive to keep on flowering and you also risk botrytis in wet and humid weather. • Keep greedy poppies away from roses. They can gobble all the rose fertiliser.

Sport inbrief Ellison out All Black midfielder Tamati Ellison will miss the bulk of the Highlanders Super Rugby campaign as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. The 29-year-old first injured his shoulder playing for Otago during last year’s NPC, and underwent surgery after returning from the All Blacks end-of-season tour when a scan revealed a dislocation and a break at the top of the shoulder bone.

Have to reapply Wallabies coach Robbie Deans will have to reapply for his position when his contract runs out at the end of the year, the new ARU chief executive Bill Pulver says. Deans has made it clear he wants to keep his position through to the 2015 World Cup in England and has already told Pulver, who was appointed on Wednesday, of his intention.

Qualifying possible Bullish New Zealand Football high performance director Fred de Jong said the All Whites could “absolutely” qualify for another World Cup without Ryan Nelsen. “It’s a tough ask, with or without him,” de Jong said. “In recent times, the All Whites have been better with him in the team than they have without.”

Should suit NZ Home town boy Robin Peterson believes St George’s Park will suit New Zealand better than any South African ground, and expects today’s second test to go the distance. The left-arm spinner, who made his name in Eastern Province, is now the Proteas’ frontline tweaker after the struggles of legspinner Imran Tahir. He expects the tourists will feel much more at home in this peaceful seaside city, and a slower, lower pitch at St George’s when the test starts at 9.30pm (NZ time).

Huge ask

sport

15

sports talk

Top sport – it’s entertainment One thing you can say about top sport – there’s plenty of drama and entertainment. This evening the second cricket test between the Black Caps and South Africans starts in Port Elizabeth. What can we expect? There’s the rub. You never quite know. You bet quite a few of us will be watching to see what happens at the start of this test given what occurred in the first test when the New Zealanders plumbed the depths in returning the ignominous figures of 45 all out. The pressure is now on to ensure this inept performance isn’t repeated but, dare one say it, it could. The situation confronting our

cricketers is an intriguing one and creates a climate in which both drama and entertainment are certain. At the moment too we have further drama with drug-busted cyclist Lance Armstrong. Dear old Lance, the man who first won and then lost the Tour de France seven times, is going to have a webcast chat with Oprah Winfrey next week. An American commentator said we could expect a more emotional Armstrong to be revealed. So there’s the chance it’ll be heart to heart stuff with perhaps Lance crying on Oprah’s shoulder. I think Lance will go either one of several ways – he’ll either make

excuses for his drug cheating or maybe he’ll keep on saying he was innocent. Can we expect a full public admission as to his guilt? Probably not. Regardless of which way his chat with Oprah goes, it’ll be entertaining. And there will be more drama and entertainment in the coming days with tennis’ Australian Open set to start on Monday. Novak Djokoviv is primed to achieve a unique achievement seeking to become the first man in the 45 year professional era of the sport to take a hat-trick of Australian Open singles titles. You can be sure rivals Roger

Federer and Andy Murray will be there doing all they can to upset this turn of events. Again, it is certain to be dramatic and entertaining. That’s what top level sports is all about. While it’s not show business, it sure is close to it, and ensures the bucks keep flowing for the professionals.

Honey the answer for John’s fitness By Chris Tobin John Bush was not crowned King of the Withers but he deserves to be named Prince of the Withers. The 81-year-old was the oldest finisher in the popular but gruelling New Year running/walking event on the Wither Hills last week. Asked for the secret he replied: “Eating lots of honey!” John operated a honey business in Old Renwick Road all his working life which is now being run by two of his sons, Peter and Murray. John worked with bees and honey from the age of 10 and took up the occupation when he left Marlborough Boys’ College. He said the physical work over the years helped him stay fit. “It’s a very physical job working with bees and honey. “You’re checking hives, dismantling hives, lifting 80lb boxes of honey and there was a lot of walking. “It’s changed today with pellet loading with forklift but it’s still very physical.” After his wife Joy passed away 18 months ago, John found walking was an

ideal outlet. When he was a young man he had tried harriers and for a period of his life he had run three miles each morning just to stay trim. “I discovered how marvellous the (Wither) hills are. “I hadn’t been up Mt Vernon in my life but now I’ve been up there several times.” Last year he walked the King and Queen of the Withers for the first time and managed a time of 2hrs 3mins over the demanding 10km course. “I’m not fast but one of my sons (Peter) who is a mountaineer said, ‘no matter how slow you are, don’t stop.’ I followed that maxim.” After this effort, one of his two daughters, Shirley, who lives in Sydney, persuaded John to take part in the hugely popular Sydney to Surf, an event open to runners and walkers. “It was a great experience and my daughter walked with me.” John walked the 14km in 2hrs 49min 52sec. His time in this year’s King and Queen of the Withers was slower than last year (2hrs

John Bush with the certificate and medal he has received for his walking efforts. 5min 45sec) but he said this year included an extra loop which he believed added 10 minutes to the time. He is still uncertain about entering next year’s event but before then he is planning a driving trip around Britain – something he did last year.

Playing petanque, c’est si bon

Kiwi motor car driver Mitch Evans knows he’s got a huge ask on his hands to emulate his success in 2013. Evans is expected to step up to GP2, one step below Formula 1, after winning the GP3 division in 2012. He says his early impressions of the GP2 car show he’s got his work cut out.

Enjoying a game of petanque on Wednesday were, from left, Warwick Storey, Lorraine Neal, Dianne Storey and John McMurdo.

By Chris Tobin If you ever fancied playing the French game of petanque, now might be the time. The Blenheim Petanque Club is about to get into gear for another year and is keen to interest new members. “We have a bit of fun and it’s more social than competitive,” club presdient and club captain John McMurdo said. “In the past we’ve played against the Nelson club and we might look at playing against them again this year.” The club is based in Weld St next to the Blenheim Bowling Club. John has been a club member since he arrived in Blenheim nine years ago. He said numbers had been up and down. They reached over 40 but are now around 25. Social members are welcome, they pay $2 each time they play.

Games are held on Sundays at 10am and 1pm and John said it was also a sport that was ideal for people in wheelchairs. Petanque involves throwing hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally “piglet”) or jack. It is also sometimes called a bouchon (literally “cork”) or le petit (“the small one”). The current form of the game originated in 1907 in La Ciotat, in Provence, southern France. The casual form of the game of pétanque is played by about 17 million people in France, mostly during their summer vacations. Anyone interested in taking up petanque can ring John at 5779789 or Chris Haymes at 5787303.
