By Jacob Page Former Marlborough Boys’ College pupils Jacob Beullens and James Churchward are keen to produce five minute videos to show off Marlborough’s wineries to the rest of the world. They are hoping to produce short documentaries that highlight the people side of the industry that digs deeper into the Marlburians that make the wine industry tick. “We think there is room to promote, not the wines, but the philosophies and techniques behind them and give the industry a more personal look,” Jacob says.

Pair want to showcase the best of Marlborough Continued from page 1 “We are trying to make these documentaries about the people, not so much the company and then we’d like to try to get them televised ideally onto a Rialto Channel, a Food Channel, as something that can run for five minutes in between shows, Jacob says. The two friends from Duncan Whiting’s drama classes say video is an under utilised medium in Marlborough. Jacob has just returned from a stint in France where he went after completing his masters in screen writing, while training at the New Zealand Film School. James has a marketing background.

“Just as a way to survive in France, I was doing videography and I ended up doing this complete series of six five-minute clips on artists and it just covers the techniques and how the artists think. It gives you an insight into how artists operate – things you otherwise wouldn’t have heard. “Essentially we think there is a gap in the market for videography and why not show off Marlborough’s two best assets, its people and the vineyards. “When I went to France for my O.E, there weren’t many jobs over there and the taxes were so high that I had to fall back onto what I knew so the videos really helped and now we have this partnership together,”

Jacob says. James says they hoped to go to Thailand to film underwater divers in June once this project was completed. “We want to be based here but we have big goals and dreams to take this further,” James says “We really think we could capture some amazing shots,” he says. “We want to establish ourselves as destination videographers,” James says. The duo admits their goals are lofty for a couple of Marlborough guys in their 20s but they have had a few international offers already but have turned them down as they try to get established in their home town.

Tunnellers remembered A piece of Marlborough greywacke, from the Council’s Pukaka Quarry, has been engraved by Sowman Monumental and will be sent north to the Waihi Heritage Vision project to be part of a memorial rock wall. The monument is to be unveiled in March 2016, to mark the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the tunnellers on the Western Front in France. Mayor Sowman says the history of the 446-member New Zealand Engineers Tunnelling Company was not widely known until a labyrinth of tunnels and caves under the town of Arras in northern France was rediscovered by cavers in the 1990s. The tunnellers had developed a 20km network which linked up a series of medieval quarries in the area. The intent was to be able to conceal 24,000 troops underground in order to take the Germans by surprise at the Battle of Arras in April, 1917. The Kiwis marked the tunnels

in 2008. “It’s certainly time their contribution was acknowledged within New Zealand and it would be fascinating to know more about the link to Blenheim,” said Mr Sowman. Mr Sowman suggested it was possible some of the tunnellers were men who had been working on the extension of the main trunk railway line south of Seddon. That work had come to a stop during the latter stages of the war. Amongst those listed in the Barry Rolton and Ross Cooke of the Marlborough RSA with Sowman Tunnelling Company was laFuneral Directors monumental manager Ken Rooney and Mayor bourer Ernest Hammond whose Alastair Sowman with the piece of greywacke from Marlborough’s next of kin was a sister living in Pukaka Quarry which will be part of a memorial rock wall. Architect found for Picton library project By Jacob Page Wellington-based Athfield Architects have been given the contract to build the new Picton Library Khandallah-based Athfield Architects was selected by Marlborough District Councillors after they listened to their presentation last week. The design process is expected to take about nine months. It’s hoped construction can begin mid-2016 with the building completed by mid-2017. The architects stressed the site offered opportunity for a creative design that would be strong on heritage and the principles of sustainability.

reflect the character of the town. He says the building should recognise Picton’s history, acknowledge its working waterfront and also the important role of tourism for the town. The library should be ‘a place for people’ with a courtyard that could be used summer and winter and offer community meeting space. There was opportunity to use nautical imagery and extensive use of timber in the new building, Picton councillor David Oddie said Athfields had made an effort to understand the community’s requirements for this building which, he says, go far beyond a library.

Athfields designed the Devonport library in Auckland as well as Wellington’s Central Library and Palmerston North City Library. Other Wellington projects include the capital’s Civic Square, the Overseas Passenger Terminal redevelopment and the Marine Education Centre. Council executive projects manager Jamie Lyall says Athfields also had a proven track record in Marlborough having recently been involved with Port Marlborough’s marina developments. Architect Zac Athfield told councillors that, given the strong corner site, the firm wanted to design a special building that would

“It will be a community hub in every sense and I feel these architects had really thought about how the site would be used. They gave us confidence that they will come up with a design that will recognise that this building must supply services and information as well as be a welcoming place to the whole community.” The next step for the architects will be to review the previous research into the aspirations of the Picton community. The design process is expected to take about nine months. It’s hoped construction can begin mid-2016 with the building completed by mid-2017.

The Marlborough District Council was trying to shake up earthquake complacency by encouraging the community to take part in a national earthquake drill. Schools are also being encouraged to be proactive on the matter The New Zealand ShakeOut would be held at 9.15am on October 15.

Tempo time change Tempo will not be held tonight because of the combined colleges formal. It will instead be held next Friday, September 18. The group will put on a ‘Classics Night’ at the Wesley Centre from 7pm.

Book sale extends The Blenheim Library is extending the Last Friday of the Month Book Sale until and including the following Sunday so it operates for three days. The Friday hours will remain the same – 9.30am until 3.30pm; the Saturday and Sunday sale will operate during the Library opening hours for those days, Saturday, 10am to 1pm and Sunday, 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

Super Rugby, Crusaders return By Jacob Page The Crusaders will play their first match in Blenheim in more than a decade when they host the Hurricanes at Lansdowne Park next February. The two Kiwi franchises will do battle on February 19, the first time Super Rugby teams have visited Blenheim since 2005 Crusaders chief executive Hamish Riach said the team was excited to be heading back up to the northern part of its catchment area. “We had such a successful game against the Hurricanes in Nelson this year and we know that the fans in Blenheim will be just as supportive. “I know that the team really enjoy travelling around the Crusaders catchment area and touching base with the fans there, so they are looking forward to spending

some time in the Marlborough community and playing this game at Blenheim’s Landsdowne Park,” Mr Riach says. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sow m a n wa s del ig ht e d

Marlborough is going to see a top level rugby match played at Lansdowne Park. “With both the Crusaders and the Hurricanes playing, there’s no doubt that this will bring

in visitors as well as provide a great event for our rugby fans in Marlborough. “We’re pleased to throw our support behind the Tasman Rugby Union to get this match here and it’s good to see our local businesses giving their support too. “The last time the Crusaders played here was against the Waratahs in 2005, and the local support was fantastic. So I’m certain there will be a big crowd turn out for this game.” The ground has a capacity of more than 15000. Tickets for the match will go on sale on Monday October 19 with seats being sold at $30. The embankments will be transformed into a corporate hosting opportunity for local business, with marquees erected on both banks.

Restoration Trust gets funds The Marlborough Sounds Restoration Trust has been given $4600 of government money for a management strategy for wildings in the Outer Pelorus area. The money comes from the Community Conservation Partnerships Fund as part of the War on Weeds, Conservation Minister Maggie Barry says. “Wilding conifers cover more than 1.7 million hectares of land, and are advancing at an estimated rate of 5 per cent a year,” Ms Barry says. The group was one of five allocated money nationally.

Inked the winning way

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim tattoo artist Jarrad Johl has come away from last weekend’s Tattooed & Proud Oamaru Show with an armful of awards, including the ‘Ink Wars, Best on the Day’. Jarrad, a tattoo artist for Black Rose Tattoo Emporium on Main Street travelled with employer Willy Wills and a number of friends and clients. His designs were well regarded among his peers, including a full coloured leopard, a black and grey Greek god statue sleeve and a portrait of Jim Morrison. The design that won him the overall award was of the lead character Rick Grimes from the Walking Dead television series. Friend and client Brad Taylor sat for four hours during the competition while Jarrad tattooed him alongside 10 other artists.

Jarrod Johl’s design that won him the ‘Ink Wars’ Best on the Day award, Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead television series.

When Jarrod’s name was called out as the ‘Ink Wars’ winner, he says it was a cool feeling, especially as he had not expected to win anything. “The experience was awesome and I was really happy with how Jarrad Johl, tattoo artist at Black Rose Tattoo Emporium has walked away from a recent competition with top awards. it all went,” he says.

Bike store takes lap of honour By Jacob Page Avantiplus Blenheim has taken out the overall Upper South Island Top Shop Award for 2015. The Queen Street store also won the lifestyle and sports category at the Upper South Island Top Shop Awards held at the Air Force Museum in Christchurch. Bill Mitchell runs the business and his partner Lynne Haines works alongside him. Bill has been in business for 31 years and is in his third generation of customers from families. “It’s a huge buzz for Bill to be recognised as being at the top of his game and it’s a huge deal for our staff as well,” Lynne says. “Bill puts a lot of effort into providing the best customer experience as well as ensuring his staff are well trained. “He invests in them and sends them for specialist training and this is the result,” Despite three decades in business, it was just the second year Bill had entered such awards. “We entered last year and weren’t featured but we got

some work-ons from the judges and really tried to enhance what we do.” The feat is more extraordinary as Bill has been looking to sell the business for almost a year. “It’s about maintaining standards,” Lynne says. “You wouldn’t try to sell a car with no air in the tyres.”

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The Cancer Society Marlborough has come up with a mouthwatering idea for its next fundraising venture - an Italian dining experience. Fundraiser Zoe Gray says the concept of ‘A Night in Italy’ was really exciting from the beginning but what has made it even more unique is the people who are supporting it. Dave and Sarah Anderson of Essence Event Cuisine have created “an incredible” five course menu, Zoe says. Sarah has an Italian heritage and spent time travelling around Italy, so you can only imagine the culinary delights that will be served. For this event Sarah has pulled together some of her family’s favourite recipes for this menu, which features dishes like ‘Pappardelle manzo e ragu di coniglio’ (pappardelle with braised beef and rabbit ragu), ‘Zuppa di Pesce alla Ligure’ (Ligurian seafood stew) and a selection of handcrafted breads and condiments, to name a few. “Our aim is to create an amazing experience for people, taking them on a journey through Italy with some of Sarah’s favourite recipes,” Dave says.

“At home we have over 300 recipe books, 25 percent of those are Italian so we have some fantastic resources. We want to make this menu as authentic as we can and really strike a chord with the locals.” The reason behind their decision to support this fundraiser stems from their own experiences with cancer. “We both have a strong connection to cancer and have had life changing experiences, so we continue to show our support to this organisation,” Dave says. Also supporting the fundraiser will be Dick Nardella who also has Italian heritage. Dick will be auctioning off the many Italian inspired items that will be up for grabs on the night. On the tables will be bottles of wine for a blind tasting. One bottle will be Marlborough Italian and the other Italian, so people will have the opportunity to guess the likes of variety, region and vintage. Tickets for the dinner and auction cost $95 per person, or $90 per person when booking a table for 10, and are available from the Cancer Society Marlborough office. It will be held at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre on October 3, starting at 7pm.

Enviroschools is a national programme taken up by about a third of New Zealand’s schools now that sustainability is one of the themes built into the national education curriculum. The Ministry for the Environment provides significant funding for this programme. Marlborough’s schools lead the way in terms of supporting enviroschools education with 80% of our schools and all kindergartens now teaching the programme – the highest uptake in any region. CBD upgrade – Bythell Place Bythell Place has a new landscape plan designed to transform the area into a more usable, peoplefriendly space. Bythell Place is one of the areas identified by the Blenheim Business Association for an upgrade and the landscape plan has been discussed with surrounding businesses. Removable bollards and planter boxes will be used so the area can be a daytime public space or be opened up for bigger events by closing the bisecting road. Five parking spaces will be removed to develop the area into a safer, more easily accessible area. The non-functioning water fountains will be removed and the raised grassed areas will be dismantled with one larger grassed area established instead. Planted areas will soften the Maxwell Road corners and a wide, level tiled area will connect one side of Bythell Place with the other. Minor work will begin on the improvements before Christmas but the bulk of the work will not begin until after this summer to avoid disruption during the CBD’s busiest season.

The Sun Camborne Green subdivision Where, you ask ? It is at the east end of Stephenson Street. What a lovely place to live. But alas, we have no fancy entrance way to let the rest of Blenheim know where Camborne Green is. We must be the only subdivision in town without.......

Customers first Come on Glassons, your service is terrible, put customers first!!!! None of you offer your help. It’s the customers who have to come looking for help. You could learn a thing or two from Pagani and Cotton On, they are brilliant with helping customers also such friendly faces and not the sour rude faces like you have at Glassons. Good customer service is not hard. A number of times I have walked into Jetz and been completely ignored even after being in the store for 10 minutes looking at a number of items.. I am prepared to spend but if you don’t want my business I’ll take it elsewhere! I’m always so impressed with the customer service at PaknSave. Keep it up.

Little Kitchen Your ‘little kitchen’ products are reprehensible. At best the tiny FOOD IMITATIONS, can be swallowed by a three or four year old. But the fine styrofoam products are easily inhaled by all! These will lodge in your lungs. At least if they are going to use children to market, they should do so safely. SHAME.

Petrol rate in Blenheim Grove Road Mobil gas station yesterday 3pm $1.939 And BP $2.029 litre but Auckland still down price. Aussie $1.239 litre. NZ Govt do nothing.

NZ Post I don’t post urgent important local letters anymore....I get in the car and deliver personally. NZ post should be absolutely ASHAMED of their shoddy service. This is a small town, its not a big city....if they want to grow Blenheim, get your act together.

Not a fan Don Coyote I think we all get it - you aren’t a fan of John Key. Give it a rest. Obviously a lot of people do favour him that’s why he is our PM.

Brickbat for Farmers store Lured by ad ‘half price toys sale’. Turned out to be buy one, get second for half price. That’s not a half price sale, but 25 percent off the purchase . Can’t trust their ads ! I agree staff at Farmers are helpful. Policies in the shop have changed, not as good as years ago. Farmers please stay consumer friendly.

Magic radio Magic radio you have done more than any government or do gooders by bringing the music back we grew up with and went head down and a#!* up to make a life and get a home too. Maybe things are changing back as they should.

Wood cutter Man cutting wood all day Maxwell Road. I pity your neighbours with chainsaw noise. Do you pay tax on wood you sell?

Why Buy Local? Went to home show looking for solarpowered unit. Folk outside of Blenheim replied within five days, local outfit even going to their office no reply.

Skilled people All skilled people in medical professions live in cities. Of course it is inconvenient to travel. I had to travel 156km or drive to CHCH when I lived in Fiordland. And about doctors fees, these people are professional. So fees match. Try taking your query to a lawyer. Then you will know about daily charges. P.S. I am NOT related to any doctors, its just common sense.

Well done Ricky Wilson Good luck in the photography finals in Auckland next month, wish you all the best of luck.

Target bikers I would suggest that if animal control want to catch some “irresponsible” dog owners at the riverbank I suggest they target those running their dogs while biking ahead. I have never yet seen a rider stop and clean up their dogs dodo’s, usually they are miles ahead. Don’t tell me they don’t know what their dogs are doing, any dog owner knows a good run gets things moving.

Oops Big typo in the Marlborough Express, Friday 14 September, Seddon Shield rugby pullout, states game is at Trafalgar Square, never knew they played rugby on a carpark! Try Trafalgar Park!

Warehouse wages

txt talk of the week

I agree with last weeks comment about warehouse pay. Article in paper said only senior staff after so much service get that, the rest get hardly enough to live on.

Just magic. Thank you Congratulations once again to the MDC gardeners. I visited the “Bee garden” last summer and was amazed and awed at the number of honey and bumble bees and many other beneficial insects at work. And not just in that garden but all the others as well. Things were certainly buzzing and a riot of colour as well.

Disgusted Thank you to the QCC grade 5 netball player who blew her nose not once but three times into her hand and wiped it on the court. I have never been so disgusted. You did your team proud.

College formal hopefuls Feel compassion for the girls banned at the local school dance-bash. It is timely to bring back the annual or bi annual debutante ball, where eligible ladies could be officially presented at any age or disability. Bring some class into this society. Perhaps MDC would sponsor, with a royal guest. Just the ticket. Those who have had such honour should get right behind this, ah but will they? I agree compassion is needed for the two girls wishing to attend a formal. Don’t be so stuck in the mud with policy..... These girls are not truants who now want to use the school formal, they have genuine reason to have had to leave school. Rules are ok, but common sense and decency should prevail here.

Pay and display parking I can understand in a large city the need to charge for parking....but here? No way, if people are not paying, then maybe, just maybe council should have a think... wonder why? Mmm not that difficult really and as someone else text, they can easily be voted off council again. Think arrogance takes over young upstart power hungry young councillors...

Water issues I phoned MDCs water reticulation guy to try and locate water Toby on my property and he said I had bit the hand of the snake ringing him. Was told very bluntly to go through the right channels and phone council. Not much help there either. Most taps in my house are leaking and council isn’t concerned by that. Guess I should just carry on wasting water then as I can’t turn it off to replace the taps with new ones I’ve purchased. After 2nd call to council they agreed to send someone out to find the water main. Thank you MDC. I’m glad I don’t have a broken pipe.

Huge thank you A HUGE thank you to the lady working in Pollard park that helped my son and brought him home after he fell off his bike and broke his arm last Friday.

Given the four days of gorgeous sunny days we had prior to Sunday, could someone from Timara Lodge please explain why you postponed the fund-raising open garden? I’m sure the confused occupants of the 30 odd cars outside the locked gates 20min after the event started would also be keen to know why they wasted their afternoon. Arrogant and disrespectful Timara.

Theatre gets fresh start with laundry Break chains of debt Lianne and Mike Budny know the importance of clean clothes. They have about 30 years of combined experience in the laundry business, and have owned A1 Drycleaning and Laundry in Blenheim for eight years. All that knowledge of laundering makes them the perfect fit to advise on the fit-out of the new laundry at the ASB Civic Theatre. They’re generously helping to cover the cost of the laundry facilities too. The old Civic Theatre in Queen Street doesn’t have a laundry but theatre general manager Andrew Scott says that most modern touring shows, especially ballet companies, have to be able to wash their costumes at the theatre after every performance. A large laundry and wardrobe room is being created backstage in the new theatre, and will be fitted out with two commercial washing machines and at least two driers, thanks to generous support from the Budnys. Royal New Zealand Ballet technical director Andrew Lees says having access to a laundry in a theatre is essential for the company’s wardrobe team. “Dancers costumes are cleaned after every performance and with a company of 34 dancers that’s a big job, and one that needs to be done quickly, before the next night’s performance or before the company continues its tour.”

and poverty

The St Ninian’s Presbyterian Church is hosting a speaker this Sunday who will be speaking in Blenheim specifically on debt relief, addressing issues around poverty and money management. Ben Wai of Auckland, is a member of Christians Against Poverty New Zealand (CAPNZ), an organisation that has helped numerous people across the world. Minister Brendan O’Fagan

says the topic Ben is speaking on would appeal to the wider community and to many, it would be very useful information. Titled ‘Poverty and Debt, Breaking the Chains’, Ben will be speaking on Sunday morning at 10am at the church, and then later that evening at 6:30pm at the St Ninian’s hall as part of the Sunday evening Soapbox series. All are welcome, refreshments provided.

A1 Drycleaning and Laundry owners Lianne and Mike Budny at work in their Blenheim business. They are helping to fit out the laundry for the new ASB Theatre.

Andrew Scott says it’s also going to mean the wardrobe teams for Marlborough-based productions and smaller touring shows won’t have to take piles of washing home each night. The Budnys did not hesitate when a member of the Theatre Trust asked if they would help fit out the new laundry - even though they had already made a substantial cash donation to the project. They are not regular theatre-goers but see the value of the new complex for Marlborough. “We like to support local organisations and the theatre will be such a good asset for the region,” Lianne says.

Mike adds that it should also bring more business into Marlborough. “Hopefully it will attract more shows and audiences from Wellington and maybe even Auckland. The shows will come here because of the great new theatre and the audiences will come to see those shows. That’s got to be good for Marlborough.” Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Andrew Lees confirms that could be the case, saying the new ASB Civic Theatre is a well thought out space and a massive step forward from the old theatre. “The new theatre is a fantastic facility in itself and we are looking forward to going there next year.”

Trio ace t-shirt design Amy Gibbs, Destiny Aires and Rosie McAllister from Fairhall School have produced the winning T-Shirt design for this year’s New World Blenheim Marlborough Kids Duathlon event t-shirt. It was a collaborative affair. Normally just one winner is chosen, but on this occasion there wasn’t just one t-shirt that covered all aspects of the Duathlon, so the judges chose three of the best and asked the girls to combine their ideas into one t-shirt. The event is on Sunday October 18.

looks at local businesses around our very own Main Street

Happy with progress By Celeste Lodewyk Instant Auto owner Colin Martin has been operating on Main Street for four months now and is happy with the business’s progress. Colin is happy to say that Instant Auto is now a member of the Motor Trade Association, meaning all work they do meets the best practice and environmental standards for the industry. Members of the MTA are also highly professional and are bound by a code of ethics, so you know the work being done on your vehicle is of the highest standard. What is more, Instant Auto Blenheim is the first express service in New Zealand to have this endorsement, Colin says. Colin and his wife Jo opened their business in May and have enjoyed seeing the business grow. “There has been a lot of repeat business

and referrals which has been great,” he says. As the warmer months approach, Colin encourages motorists to have their vehicles serviced, air conditioning re-gassed and cabin filters cleaned. “Get in before the summer rush, call in and we will service your vehicle while you wait,” he says.

By Celeste Lodewyk Local couple Josh and Michelle Cody have just added another franchise to their growing business, with the purchase of HomePlus. Josh and Michelle were approached by the previous owners who felt HomePlus would be a good fit with what they already offered with their existing businesses Novus Auto Glass and Marlborough Glass. “All three businesses compliment one another and with HomePlus it opens up a wider product range,” Michelle says. “We are really excited about it. Renovations are currently underway to build a brand new showroom for HomePlus where people can visit, view the range and ask any questions. For those who like what they see and want

something custom made for their home or business, Josh and his team provide free onsite measure and quote. From there the product materials are ordered, then fabricated at their Main Street factory before being installed. “Everything is custom made to fit people’s homes and style requirements, whether it’s a security door or a whole new wardrobe,” Josh says. For your home’s exterior, HomePlus specialises in awnings, balustrade, fences, gates, roller shutters and security screens. For the interior the options include shower screens and domes, roller blinds, mirrors, wardrobe organisers and doors, insect screens and retrofit double glazing.

From ‘I can’... to ‘I do’ Back on the wagon

Week 14

Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk’s health journey as she approaches her wedding day.

The past two weeks have been playing catchup on the previous weeks where I was sick and ‘fell off the wagon’. I haven’t had a chance to catch up with personal trainer Emma Burrell this week but will have my measurements next time. But I have to say the most encouraging thing has been people commenting to me on my progress. It’s nice to hear the feedback. Today I’m feeling much better and back to where I was. I have learned that although two weeks isn’t a long period of time, it’s still enough to put you back. I felt myself really struggling with my energy levels and will power to get out for my evening walks. Another issue I faced was the ‘boredom’ with the routine I had in place. So I have been mixing it up and finding new recipes. After my visit with Bernadette Thomas to see the

progress on my wedding dress, I realised that yes, I have lost weight on my bottom half, but my top half is needing more work. With my dress being sleeveless I need to tone my arms, so I have been fitting in mini workouts where I can. As I have said before I have a very busy lifestyle, so I’m incorporating simple things like press-ups against the bathroom sink while the shower is warming up and holding tin cans in each hand, doing a boxing action while waiting for dinner to

At the moment I am still deciding on a song to walk down the aisle to so this way I can listen to each option while I walk. On the wedding planning front, I have been busy handsewing my bridal bouquet. The flowers are made from fabric and are all different shapes and sizes, and the goal is to be able to keep it after the wedding and hopefully pass it down to my daughter when she gets married. I also have a veil and a very special heirloom coming from family members in Australia that will add to the family traditions and memories that are being created.

Sport

Help me, Ronda UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is a promoter’s dream. Smart, articulate, attractive, dominant, an entertainer and a professional lass kicker is the best way to describe her. In the world of combat sports, she is currently the hottest ticket to watch compete on the planet. Nicknamed ‘Rowdy” she is perfection personified in the mixed martial arts world and yes, while the sport may seem barbaric to the untrained eye, the Olympic bronze medallist in Judo at Beijing 2008 is literally changing the perception of women’s sport single handedly. She’s undefeated in her 12-fight

MMA career to date and has finished 11 of those contests inside the first round. Her last four fights have lasted 66 seconds, 16 seconds, 14 seconds and 34 seconds respectively. That’s more dominant than Mike Tyson ever was. She is so dominant, she’s running out of opponents – the most hyped upcoming match for her is against ‘The Cyborg’ Miesha Tate, whom she has beaten twice before. The 28-year-old’s move of choice is a submission armbar. It’s painful, and it will make you tap out. Speculation is she will eventually head to the world of profes-

sional wrestling because she’s a huge fan of ‘sports entertainment’ and is likely to make even more money doing it than she will by fighting professionally. Rousey is set to fight in Melbourne in November against fellow-American, Holly Holm. The event is likely to sell out due to Rousey’s popularity which means more than 70,000 fans will be in attendance. That’s 14,000 more than the previous biggest crowd for a UFC event. Rousey is money and she doesn’t work by the hour – most of the time she doesn’t work by the minute.

The Marlborough representative golf team managed a win and a loss from their trip to Westport at the weekend. Marlborough was tied with Nelson 4-4 on Saturday, but Nelson won easily in the end. Against the West Coast, Marlborough came from behind to win on Sunday.

Paddon and Kennard target Rally Australia By Jacob Page Kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon and Marlborough-based co-driver John Kennard are aiming for a top three finish at this week’s FIA World Rally Championship event in Australia. Paddon and Kennard’s recent experience of this unique event in the forests and shire roads of Coffs Harbour on the coast of New South Wales and his strong run of form on gravel this season led the team to make the decision to run Paddon and Kennard alongside Thierry Neuville and co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul in the No 7 car to offer the highest probability of good points. Kennard says he’s really looking forward to what is the closest to a home event for the only New Zealanders competing in the WRC. “It’s the nearest thing we have to home nowadays, with some enjoyable public road stages. From my side of the car, it’s also a logistically simpler event than some.

MacKenzie gets early look at Olympic course By Jacob Page Marlborough’s Sophie MacKenzie is one of nine New Zealand rowers and two coaches and a manager visiting Rio de Janiero for a three day orientation visit in the city that will play host to the 2016 Olympic Games. The team are visiting directly after the recent World Championships and Olympic qualifying regatta in which MacKenzie and her partner Julia Edward claimed gold for a second straight year in the women’s lightweight double scull. “It’s a great opportunity to see where the Olympic Games will take place next year”, says Olympic Champion Mahe Drysdale. “We are looking forward to experiencing the Olympic city so that when we return in 2016 we can just focus on the job at hand.” Drysdale also predicted that New Zealanders have a lot to look forward to next

year after the New Zealand Rowing team qualified nine Olympic boats and a total of 33 athletes at the 2015 World Rowing Championships. He believed the 2016 Games would again boost the sport of rowing in New Zealand after the inspiring efforts of the rowers in London. The group will visit the Olympic village, train on and visit the Olympic venue at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas located in the heart of the city in the Copacabana cluster of venues. Rio 2016 competition staff will host a tour of the venue and will give the rowers an idea of how it will operate in 2016. The 2016 Olympic Games will be the first to be held in South America, and the rowing regatta will take place on Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in the centre of Rio from 6 to 13 August 2016.

the pair. Around 100 people are following the event as part of an official Paddon RallySport tour and hundreds more are travelling across the Tasman to support their favourite driver and enjoy the WRC action. “It’s amazing to have so much support from the groups that we are hosting, but also the hundreds of other Kiwis going over. It will make for a special experience and I’m sure it will give us that little extra lift to push for the front.” Paddon and Kennard are one of 11 WRC crews competing in Australia. They face eight stages on Friday, including the trio of new fast and technical stages. Saturday has just four stages, including two runs of the 50km Nambucca, the longest stage of the event. The event concludes with four more stages on Sunday.

Makos try to tame Lions

There are three starting changes and a swag of changes to the bench for the Tasman Makos match against Wellington at Westpac Stadium tonight. Quentin MacDonald takes back the hooking spot from younger brother Jesse, Alex Ainley is in for lock Marco Kotze, who returns to the bench, and Kieron Fonotia regains the centre spot, in place of Trael Joass who drops out of the 23-man squad altogether. Prop Jake Stafford-Wood rejoins the reserves, in place of Brock Kaahu while Kade Poki makes his first appearance of the season from the bench.
