By Chris Tobin Pelorus Sounds teenager Leona Plaisier hopes her petition opposing NZ Salmon’s proposed expansion in the Marlborough Sounds will be taken seriously by the Government. Miss Plaisier, 17, presented her petition to Green Party’s fisheries spokesperson MP Steffan Browning on the steps of Parliament yesterday. The on-line petition started on August 9 and has been signed by 11,000 people. “Hopefully it will now go to the select committee and will make a difference with the Government,” Miss Plaisier said. “The public see the decision as having already been made.” Continued page 3

Blenheim singer selected for elite course By Emily Elliott Olivia Sheat is one of few chosen to study a select programme at the New Zealand School of Music next year. The Marlborough Girls’ College 2012 Headgirl went through a rigorous audition process last month, in order to study a Bachelor of Music majoring in Classical Performance Voice. Last week, Olivia found out she was one of the six to twelve people selected. “I’ve always wanted to go to university and study music. Wellington is a great place to do that,” she said.

“My current singing teacher will also be teaching at the university.” The three year degree requires Olivia to take voice and language lessons, as well as musical theory. Her schedule is full before classes start, singing for various Christmas concerts. “I’m also going to choir camp for a week. A lady offered to sponsor me.” It’s all good practice for Olivia, as she is auditioning for the opportunity to sing with the UK Youth Choir in January. As well as that, the talented singer is also touring the USA

and Canada with the New Zealand Youth Choir. “I’ve been in the NZ Secondary Schools Choir, which was a two year thing. My time is up, so I decided to audition for the NZ Youth Choir. It’s a step up.” She was selected, and will be rehea rsing wit h t hem during the university tri-mester breaks, usually in Auckland or Wellington. “It’s a three week tour, and I go in November.” Olivia is looking forward to the next three busy years, which are all in preparation to become an Opera singer.

Fairhall Festival a success Bold robbers still at large

Much of the Marlborough community gave their support to Fairhall School on the weekend. T he Fa i rha l l G ou r met Christmas Festival was a success - just over $18,000 was raised to go towards new technology for the school. T he su n was out , t he entertainment was great, and both adults and kids had a good time. According to co-ordinator, Debbie Pannell, there is a buzz in the Fairhall family.

“Everybody has said they felt so part of everything.” The new layout meant that each stall could see the other stalls, as well as what was happening on stage, giving a neat feel, Mrs Pannell said. “All the hardest work has paid off, it went far better than expected.” Mrs Pannell said all of the food sold out very early on, despite catering for thousands. “Many people have said it was

refreshing to have good quality food while the kids also had their treats.” Mrs Pannell has heard from feedback that a lot of people also came from out of town. As the co-ordinator, mother of Fairhall School children, and a major sponsor, Mrs Pannell is already excited about next year. “I’ve got a new energy to improve! My vision for next year is to bring in more and more food.”

By Chris Tobin Three women who stole three 46-inch televisions valued at $4500 from the Warehouse two weeks ago have still not been caught. Constable Andrew Holdaway of the Blenheim police said they had established the identity of one suspect, who had since moved to the North Island, but not that of the other two women. The three televisions have not been retrieved. On November 29, the women loaded the flat screen televisions on a trolley and pushed it out of the building. They placed the televisions in their car and drove off. A member of the public advised Warehouse staff and the women were captured on CCTV cameras. Constable Holdaway said enquiries were continuing.

As part of the treaty settlement, the Marlborough Sounds will now be known formally as Queen Charlotte Sound/Totaranui.

$20m treaty signing for Picton

By Chris Tobin An historic $20 million treaty settlement is expected be signed at Waikawa Marae in Picton later this month. The top of the south iwi Te Atiawa will sign deeds of settlement with the Crown on December 21. It will include a Crown apology acknowledging breaches against the iwi. At the signing also, as part of the redress process the iwi will formally receive ownership of Rai and Queen Charlotte forests (4417.8ha and 1107ha respectively) as well as $11 million. Te Atiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu chairperson Glenice Paine said the financial component of the settlement was not high priority. “Our people were more interested in the return of land and the call for redress.” She said a final ratification was required on December 14 before the signing could proceed. However, this appeared to be a formality.

Among properties on a list that will be handed over to the iwi are primary school sites – Fairhall, Havelock, Springlands, Picton and the soon to close Koromiko School. Also on the list is the Queen Charlotte College site as well as government owned land in Picton and at several other sites around Marlborough. Name changes will also be made in the region. Queen Charlotte Sound will be altered to Queen Charlotte Sound/ Totaranui. “It’s about formalising and reestablishing the names,” Glenice Paine said. “We’re re-connecting in a spiritual way with Queen Charlotte Sound. She could not provide a list of name alterations but said there was “a package.” Another top of the south iwi, Ngatea Koata, will also sign a treaty settlement with the Crown on the same day. This will take place at Whakatu Marae in the morning. The signing at Picton will occur at 3pm on December 21.

Salmon farm petition

Continued from page 1 She said parliament sat for the last day of the year today and so the petition would not be considered until the New Year. Miss Plaisier has spent eight months this year working in opposition to plans by NZ King Salmon to build nine new salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds. If approved, eight of the farms would be in areas where marine farming was prohibited. The case is before the Environmental Protection Authority and a draft decision is expected soon. Among

those opposing the proposal is the Marlborough District Council. Mr Browning said the proposal was against the rights of Marlborough Sounds residents and their environment. “The approval of King Salmon’s proposed plan change would mean marine farming could occur anywhere on out coastline.” “There are also severe concerns about King Salmon’s sustainability claims, both around feed sources and their impacts on the marine environment,” he said.

Xmas parade ‘one of the biggest’ By Chris Tobin One of the biggest crowds in recent years turned out for Blenheim’s Christmas parade on Saturday. Katrina Lange of Marlborough4Fun which organised the event said usually up to 5000 attended but she thought this year’s number might have been between 5000 and 6000.

“Streets were packed and a lot stayed on for the free entertainment. “With the floats we had a great mixture and all in all it went really well. We were lucky with the weather too.” Katrina said a huge amount of work went into organising the parade with planning beginning six to seven months out.

“A lot goes on behind the scenes co-ordinating all the people, securing performers and advertising road closures.” A best float competition was held in conjunction with the parade. Marlborough Kindergarten Association took out first place with Woman’s Federation second and Idea Services third.

In the walkers section, SPCA was first with the Blenheim and Districts Highland Band second. “A lot of people commented how they enjoyed it,” Katrina said. “It’s one of the most popular events we do; it’s so well supported and loved by all the people who come to see it.”

Pay up, police advise Some Marlborough victims of crime who have been owed reparation payments from offenders will receive them as a result of a joint operation between police and Ministry of Justice staff. Last Thursday evening police teamed up with bailiffs and other collections staff to execute warrants to recover outstanding reparations payments and payments for overdue fines. The total value of the warrants actioned was $44,569.70 which included $11,394.15 owed to victims of crime. Marlborough Area Commander Inspector Steve Caldwell said it was rewarding work for all involved to recover money owed to victims. “The message also becomes quite clear to the people who have ignored making payment when their car is taken

Xmas toy collection ends Monday

away or the computer is carried out the door.” The warrants enabled officers to seize property in lieu of payment. Four vehicles, one motorbike and other property were confiscated. Some people also took the opportunity to make a payment on the night to avoid having their property taken. The property seized may be sold by the court to cover outstanding payments. Inspector Caldwell said the operation was about holding offenders to account and Police would conduct similar joint operations in future. “My advice to anyone who has outstanding fines or reparation payments is to take responsibility for payment. Otherwise you can expect us to come visiting,” he said.

Last week, from December 2 to 8, the Air Force carried out Exercise Blackbird in the Dip Flat area near Nelson Lakes. “Exercise Blackbird is the Air Force’s annual rotary wing mountain flying exercise” said the Air Force’s Squadron Leader Lyn Coromandel. “The exercise is designed to familiarize crews with

mountain flying operations. “Despite a couple of challenging days for weather, conducting the exercise later in the year has paid off and we’ve been able to achieve what we planned to.” As well as the UH-1H Iroquois, this was the first time the Air Force’s new light utility helicopter the Augusta A109, had participated.

New health providers found

Health providers have been found to replace the services provided by Blenheim-based Te Rapuora o te Waiharakeke Trust which is closing. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) announced on Monday that Te Kahui Hauora O Ngati Koata and Te Hauora O Te Awhina would provide Kaupapa Maori mental health services and Te Hauora O Ngati Rarua and Maata Waka Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust would deal with Maori personal health services. The DHB’s chief executive John Peters, said it was important the correct decision was made to support clients registered with Te Rapuora. “The DHB has received submissions from eight Maori health providers and offers of support from mental health community providers based in Golden Bay, Nelson and Marlborough. “We believe the decision made today will allow the DHB to strengthen clinical support to tangata

whaiora and clients registered to ensure they are delivered in a culturally appropriate manner, and it allows relationships with local Maori health providers and the community to be strengthened as we move forward to transition services.” Te Rapuora Trust announced on November 22 that it would close at the end of this month due to financial concerns and projected revenue streams. The trust has 500 clients and 22 staff. James Reneti, Kaiwhakahaere of Te Kahui Hauora O Ngati Koata, said, “We were pleased with the decision made. We are prepared to put in the extra effort to support those clients who are registered and to ensure it’s done from a kaupapa Maori point of view.” Next Wednesday a public update on the transition to the new service providers will be held in Blenheim at 1pm and again at 6pm in the St Johns Hall, 93 Seymour Street.

‘Shame on you’ Dear Ed I have lived in Blenheim for two and a half years and on most good weathered Saturdays you will find me down at the Saturday market on the station car park selling off bits and pieces that came with me from the UK, that are now surplus to my needs/requirements. A message from me to a lowlife who has stolen over the last couple of weeks: A silver ring set with a small onyx (black) stone; a silver necklace with a silver pendant set with a circular moss agate stone; a multi-crystal set bracelet. I am so disappointed and disgusted

Dear Ed, Sorry if I am not too articulate with words but I am writing this to commend you on your newspaper. You obviously take great pride in your paper from laying it out to its delivery to your customers. Your paper is always placed in the letter boxes which shows not only how proud you are of your paper but also shows respect for your advertisers and customers I thank you for that and I just wish your opposition would follow your lead. They seem to go out of their way to litter our streets and properties with their equivalent/lesser paper. This I believe shows total disrespect for their customers and advertisers alike. I have to say I am surprised their advertisers put up with this as a newspaper which is sodden through with rain is no use to them or their customers as it generally just gets thrown out.

by your actions. You obviously have no morals or scruples at all and do not know right from wrong. Shame on you. Do you have a conscience? Maybe someone will get one of the above as a Christmas present but I cannot imagine that I will ever get these items back although if anyone has been offered any or all of the above items please let the Ed know. Funny, I do believe miracles do happen sometimes. Disappointed

Well done Sun Shoes & Accessories

Olivia Sheat Blenheim I have been accepted into the New Zealand School of Music and will attend next year in Wellington studying a Bachelor of music majoring in Performance Voice.

I must admit I use to subscribe to their paper on a regular basis and I admit they, after I complained, did put their subscription paper in the mail box. However, despite complaining about them not putting their free paper in the box they continued to just discard their free paper in the driveway so I cancelled my subscription. This mornings paper was delivered in such a way, right on the edge of a puddle and so was sodden yet again. Often they have bagged these papers but I don’t believe this should exempt them from delivering these papers properly. By delivering them properly, it shows respect for their paper, their advertisers and their customers. Once again I truly appreciate the effort you put in your paper and its delivery. Thank you G Flintoft

Swamp willows

Dear Ed, Fish and Game’s Vaughan Lynn misses the point. No one is against taking the willows out in the Para Swamp. But don’t do half a job. Why cannot Fish and Game with some duck shooter volunteers, flat bottomed row boats and chain saws have working bees and fell the dead trunks into the water or better still where practical, cut them and haul them out? It looks contradictory to have a Fish and Game billboard about “100% pure” near the dead, stark trees created by Fish and Game. Paul Sticknee

Weaving a tangled web Having just released an international thriller novel, Marlborough artist Mike Ponder will be having a book signing in Blenheim this week. Chris Tobin caught up with him. “Plot is vital because a lot of people have a great grasp of English but it doesn’t mean they can write a good book,” says Mike Ponder when we chatted last week. Hang on here, some people might say, who’s this talking? Is this Mike Ponder the artist? Yes, it so happens that it is. To the title ‘artist,’ to describe Mike you could add also vineyard owner, and olive expert as well as the author of international thrillers. And at age 69 when many might be contemplating a quiet time in retirement, playing golf, relaxing in a comfy chair of an evening with wine in hand, Mike is juggling the varied aspects of his life and is about to have his second book published. He’s confident the public will find Four Kings, “a tangled web of deceit, corruption and greed,” to quote the cover blurb, to be a real page turner. The book follows on from another thriller Mike wrote a couple of years ago – The Windsor Conspiracy. Four Kings is set in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe and tells of Gus McKenzie whose property is looted and taken from him. A cholera epidemic and the 2008 election provide some of the backdrop as Gus goes in pursuit to find those who were responsible – was it really Mugabe or was the dictator just a pawn in an international plot? You’ll have to read Four Kings to find out. The Windsor Conspiracy has sold around the world and has been translated into several languages and Mike says he wrote it leaving open the possibility of a sequel. “I got pestered to do a sequel, so I did because I could hang the plot on historic events. “Also we (Mike and wife Di) have

friends whose farm was forced off them by gunpoint. “Their tragic story left a big impression. “I wanted to incorporate how Mugabe could get rid of the white farmers and why England refused to intervene. “It’s included in the plot.” Mike first tried writing a novel 30 years ago for no other reason than the fact he enjoyed writing.

To the title ‘artist,’ to describe Mike you could add also vineyard owner, and olive expert as well as the author of international thrillers.

The manuscript was picked up by Collins but it did not proceed to publication since the publishing company could not secure a paperback company to follow through. The reason given was that the book had been set mainly in New Zealand. In his latest two novels Mike has made a point to interest an international audience. While Four Kings is based mainly in Zimbabwe, there are sections of the book set in the Australian outback, America, England, on the high seas and in the Niger Delta where Mike delves into oil company corruption and politics. “I only write of places I’ve been to and we’ve done a massive amount of travel over the years,” he says. Writing novels of international conspiracies and a successful career as an artist were not on the

immediate horizon for Mike when he left Hutt Valley High many years ago. One year as a management trainee for the now disappeared McKenzies retail chain was enough for him and he has been selfemployed ever since. From running vocational training courses, to property investment and speculation, to painting, he has a varied background. He and wife Di moved to the Marlborough Sounds in 1969 where they took up the offer of forestry encouragement grants and grew pine trees. In the early 1970s they bought Willowmeade, in Blenheim, now the garden rest home and stayed for 10 years. After this they started Ponder Estate, planted olives and became pioneers of this industry in New Zealand. The estate was sold in 2001 and Mike and Di now grow 30ha of grapes at Cowslip Farm on Tynesfield Road. They also own a short-horn cattle stud and two olive groves. And of course there has been art along this journey, a lot of art. Mike only became serious about painting at the age of 30 when he started lessons. After an instructor rubbished what he had done, he decided to teach himself. Because of this approach, Mike says he developed his own techniques using knives which gave his art a distinctiveness that has ensured his work has sold ever since. “The moment I started using a knife was wonderful because it’s clean. “I discovered that using a knife could give you amazing fine detail.”

His artwork has gone around the world with his themed paintings of a faceless stockman having been greatly successful. They pop up in the unlikeliest of places. “In Japan my paintings are on billboards,” he says. To return to his writing, does he think Four Kings could be made into a motion picture?

“I have my fingers crossed,” he says. “There’ve been some murmurings of interest. We’ll wait and see.” Mike is just finishing his third novel set in German occupied France during 1940 which, with the other two, will make a trilogy. “I’m really excited about it,” he says.

Chance to see unique WWII bomber

By Annabelle Latz Be sure to cast your eyes to the sky on Saturday. Better still, visit the flying day at Omaka, and have a close up look at the Avro Anson Mk 1 twin-engined bomber. Having arrived in Blenheim a month ago, this veteran is the only Mk 1 flying anywhere in the world, and is hopefully in Marlborough to stay. “We are keen to help make a good happy home for it here,” said Graham Orphan, organiser of the event. G r a ha m compa re d t he experience of seeing the World War Two bomber to stepping back in time. The cloth map of Southern Engla nd f rom 1939, the navigator’s table, its drawer containing period equipment, l i ke t he 1939 St a e dt ler Clutch-pencil and the pack of replacement leads beside it, all combine to form a masterpiece of history. “It’s like you are really there.” Bill and Robin Reid from Wakefield found the bomber in Australia a decade ago, and have been working on it ever since. Graham said it was great for the Omaka Aviation Heritage

Drumming up business in Christchurch A bid to gain business oppor t un it ies for Marlborough out of the Christchurch rebuild will be made early next year when Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman leads a business delegation to the quakedamaged city. The combined councilMarlborough business initiative has been dubbed COMBI and would be an opportunity for local companies working in areas such as design, roading, commercial construction, residential building, joinery and building supplies. A two-day visit is scheduled for January 28 and 29. The Marlborough

Alistair Sowman

Chamber of Commerce is the council’s partner in this initiative. Mr Sowman said the visit would be a follow-up to a successful forum held in August where local businesses were able to make direct contact with the management of some of the major Christchurch

rebuild projects. “We’ve already seen some tangible results from the August forum we arranged here in Blenheim with some good contracts secured for Marlborough businesses. This is a next step which, I hope, will underline to the Christchurch construction community that Marlborough does have the capacity to play a role in the Christchurch rebuild,” Mr Sowman said. The council’s economic development manager Neil Henry said the council’s aim was to foster expansion of the regional economy but it was very much up to the companies

themselves to pick up on this opportunity. “A l r e a d y w e’v e had local businesses indicating they want to come on board. They can see the value of the kind of introductions to be made through a visit like this. For local companies who can step up and get involved now, but who might be wondering how they can get a foot through the door in Christchurch, this is their chance.” Anyone interested in further information about the business delegation can contact the Chamber of Commerce, phone 577 9575 or email Debbie@ mcoc.org.nz.

Public meetings for Clifford Bay terminal proposal A series of public meetings will help draw together the region’s position on whether to move the ferry terminal to Clifford Bay. Mayor Alistair Sowman said this will be good preparation, should the government make a decision in favour of moving the Picton ferry terminal to Clifford Bay. Public meetings, with a professional facilitator, will be held in Picton, Blenheim, Seddon and Ward. Mr Sowman says if the Government decides to make the move to Clifford Bay it would have widespread repercussions for Marlborough and it is important the region has time to prepare itself for a period of adjustment. His proposal will be discussed by the full Council at next week’s meeting. He said there would be both commercial and social implications in such a decision. “There are all kinds of issues to look at including the effect on Picton tourism, possible population changes to some of our smaller communities, the reduction in tourist traffic on a large part of State Highway One and the future of the rail marshalling yards in Picton.” The Mayor said it would assist discussions if the government would release the research done through the Ministry of Transport this year which was used to support the govern-

ment claim that there was a strong business case for further examining the proposal to move the South Island ferry terminal from Picton to Clifford Bay. “One thing that is missing in the public discussion so far is the hard data about the impact on Marlborough; who exactly would be affected and how big that effect would be. There has been a lot of talk, a lot of dire predictions and some positive anticipation –but the reality is that we don’t yet know just how big the economic impact would be on this region.” “Nor do we know whether, on balance, the overall impact would be positive or negative,” he said. However Mayor Sowman said the two certainties arising from a decision to move to

Clifford Bay would be that Picton would need help to adapt to the new circumstances and Council would want financial assistance from the Government to help with this process. The Government has indicated a timeframe which would see construction beginning in 2016 with a new port operating by 2020. “I do not want to see the government underestimate the repercussions for Marlborough and, while there is some time before firm decisions will be made, it’s vital this region does get all the assistance it would need to properly plan for and adapt to such a change. The government has said its decision will be made on the basis of national interest but that decision must also acknowledge the needs of Marlborough.”

High fire risk likely in region It’s looking as if there might be a return to a typical hot summer for the Marlborough Kaikoura region – that means a high or even extreme fire risk. Marlborough Kaikoura’s Principal Rural Fire Officer Mac McNamara said it was vital for every member of the public to understand the risk this region faces and that fire precautions are essential now the summer months are here. “Everyone should stick to the

rules – if we put a total fire ban is in place, it’s there for a reason. Under the current Restricted Fire Season, the permit system helps us manage the risk. Anyone who starts a fire without a permit and then can’t control it may find themselves with a big damages bill,” he warns. Past experience has shown how uncontrolled fires in our region can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages as well as The fire in the Wither Hills on putting fire fighters’ lives at risk.
