Students meet The Red Checkers By Emily Elliott Students from Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ College watched The Red Checkers on Friday. The RNZAF Formation Aerobatic team performed a formation display over Base Woodbourne for the careers expo that 20 College students were able to attend. The pilots were on their way to Christchurch, and it was a coincidence that the two events overlapped. The students, a few of which were interested in joining the Air Force, were able to meet with the pilots and talk to them about flying, Air Force life, and what being an aerobatic pilot is like. As part of the careers expo, the College students took part in recruit activities, toured Base classrooms and facilities, and watched military displays. Marlborough Boys’ College year 12 student, Kadin Hegglun, thought the display was great and said he wants to join the Air Force. “I want to be a pilot. “I’ve never seen the Red Checkers, or an airshow, and I thought it was pretty good.”

Nathan Matson, Troy Mattheson, Brynn Davys and Kain Greeback talked to Checkers Three, Flight Lieutenant Matt Walls.

Kadin was able to sit in the pilot seat of a helicopter, as well as the pilot seat of an air trainer. “Do you fly everyday?” was a common question the Marlborough

Boys’ College students asked the aerobatic pilots. Flight Lieutenant and Checkers Three, Matt Walls, told the boys that the Air Force is a varied career.

“You can join in one trade, and then switch to another trade,” said Matt. “It’s not just one job for years, it’s constantly changing.”

Festival strategies work By Chris Tobin Strategies by the organisers of the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival to ensure it was a fun event with less drunkenness and bad behaviour paid off with only one arrest being made at the festival site. “We spent a big chunk talking of ways to reduce intoxication and misbehaviour,” Marcus Pickens, general manager of Wine Marlborough which organises the event said. The arrest at Brancott Estate, site of the festival, was of a 19-year-old male fencer for disorderly behaviour after he began spitting and causing problems in the crowd. He was taken to the Blenheim Police Station to sober up and

Tim Crawford

then released after receiving a pre-charge warning. Only nine other arrests were made in Blenheim between 7am on Saturday and 3.20am Sunday, all for minor offences. The festival ran from 10.30am to 6pm. Last year 29 arrests were made at the festival site; 40 for

Car, 4x4 & Light Truck

the day. “We had more security; we fenced off sites better and also highlighted the water stations. We had liquid action walking around with water,” Mr Pickens said. A total of 35 security guards were employed who helped remove a dozen people for intoxication. A crowd of 7000, slightly up on last year, attended the event which Mr Pickens described as getting “better and better.” He said an attempt had been made to attract an older age group to the festival and it was pleasing to see the number of people over 60. Festival organising committee chairman Tim Crawford

said they had made “dramatic changes” from last year which were a consequence of things that had happened then. “I think we had a more mature crowd this year and that, together with a different approach with the music and beefing up the food, made a difference. “The feedback I’ve received is that it was the best ever festival and that’s due to several things, not least the fantastic weather.” Mr Crawford said the presentation of the festival site at Brancott Estate was “fantastic,” and was a credit to Brancott vineyard manager John Argyll and his team. A festival debrief will be held next week.

Band of brothers rally to support

By Chris Tobin The police dog section around the country is banding together to help one of their own and Blenheim playing a part also. Blenheim police dog handler Senior Constable Steve Tribe, assisted by civilian support staff member Kate Smith, is organising a fundraising dinner and charity auction in Blenheim for Constable Blair Spalding, 36, of the Hamilton police dog section. Constable Spalding has been diagnosed with a rare brain tumour and needs funds for an operation that can only be performed at the International Neurology Institute in Hanover, Germany. “I’ve attended courses with Blair; he’s one of life’s good guys, and we as dog handlers want to support him,” Constable Tribe said. The police have 140 dog handlers around the country who Constable Tribe

described as being “a band of brothers.” A total of $90,000 has to be raised for the operation and this excludes living costs for Constable Spalding, his partner Carla, also a serving police officer, and their daughter, Indie 2, as well as payment for flights. They will have to remain in Germany for three months. Constable Tribe said Marlborough businesses had been overwhelming in their support for the fundraising dinner and charity auction which will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough on March 7. Sports gear, wine, women’s wear, items from a range of businesses, artwork have all been donated for the charity auction from which the proceeds will go towards Constable Spalding’s operation costs. Lifestyle village filling up fast By Annabelle Latz If you want to live at Springlands Lifestyle Village you will have to get your name in quick. That is the message from Chris Thornley, managing director. Last Saturday more than 250 people attended the Open Day on Battys Rd, to look at the villas, apartments, and studios. Chris said they received positive feedback about the facilities, including the new wing being built currently. “People said it was a magnificent facility, and was like a flash hotel. There were comments on the wonderful gardens, and fantastic views out to the Wither Hills.” A brand new wing is currently being built, which will include nine apartments in addition to the existing 11. They will open on March 1, and six are still available. The new wing will also include six brand new studios, which are ready to be moved into now. Chris said the studios are being signed up for very fast, and only two are still available. No more studios or apartments will be built. The villas also created much interest, and more can be built if needed. “Anybody wanting a facility needs to get in now,” said Chris.

Charlotte, ‘our Valentine’s surprise gift’ By Emily Elliott Rodney and Annie never missed giving a gift to each other every Valentine’s Day. Then in 2007, Annie gave Rodney the gift of a baby girl. On February 14, two weeks overdue, and after two days of off-and-on labour, Annie set out to the supermarket on a scorching Marlborough day. “All I wanted were strawberries, but I got Charlotte instead.” “You wanted me too!”Charlotte added. Since then, Annie and Rodney have skipped giving each other gifts, and shower their girl with love instead. Tomorrow, Valentine’s Day, Charlotte is turning six years old, and is having a birthday party with her friends. Charlotte recognises the day as a day of love, and isn’t afraid to share that around. “I like making cards to give to my friends and teachers for Valetines, even though it’s my birthday, I still love giving them things too.” Her older brother, Jake, is seven and a half, and said it is cool that Charlotte’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day. “Mum says it’s the best Valentine’s gift she has ever had.” The family’s dog, Tui, was also born Charlotte is turning six years old tomorrow, and is celebrating on Valentine’s Day. her birthday with her dog, Tui.

Business group wants town united by Chris Tobin Picton needs to have a united front as the proposal to shift the terminal ferries from the town to Clifford is being considered, says the local business group. “The business community here wants us to find out the impact of Clifford Bay but in the background there are people niggling away,” Graham Gosling the chairman of the Picton Graham Gosling. Business Group said. He was disappointed that people had chosen to be critical of him and the group while hiding their identity through nom de plums in letters to the Sun. Marlborough mayor Alistiar Sowman said in a letter to the editor last week that the public would be consulted on the proposal if it went to the next stage and the Government sought resource consent. However, Mr Gosling said this would be too late; the Picton public should be consulted now in his opinion and he was disappointed that the team from the Clifford Bay Feasibility Study had not contacted the business group or Picton community. “It’s about financial impact on this community and nobody has come to discuss that with us.”

Picton pavilion progressing well by Chris Tobin Work is progressing well on the new sports facility at Endeavour Park in Picton (above). Chairman of the society building the pavilion, Graham Gosling said the $3.1 million project was expected to be completed in May. “It will be a hub for sport and for the community,” he said.

The ground floor will have changing facilities and the upper floor will include a large conference meeting s which will have the capacity for 200 people together with kitchen and bars. “It means we can take a reasonably sized conference,” Mr Gosling said. “Because it’s community owned we want to ensure it has use seven days a week.” The pavilion is being developed by

an incorporated society with volunteer committee members from various business, sporting clubs and recreational backgrounds within Picton and supported by the Marlborough District Council. Stage two of the project will be to encorporate two squash courts and rooms for conferences. “It won’t be built for two years and is subject to funding. We have to find $800,000.”

Plenty of activities at festival A variety of activities will feature at the second Festival Nelson Lakes, this Sunday, February 17, at Kerr Bay. Scenic flights will be run from near St Arnaud, Murton’s classic boats will be on display, the water taxi will be running with kayaks, wetsuits and more for hire. The crowd at Monday evening’s meeting in Picton.

Big turnout for ferry meeting A crowd of over 200 people attended a public meeting at Queen Charlotte College hall on Monday evening to discuss the Government’s proposal to move the interisland ferry from Picton to Clifford Bay and the implications that would mean for Picton. Sarah O’Bryan who is compiling a survey of the effects on the

Picton community and businesses should the plan proceed, was disappointed that several people who supported the proposal did not speak up at the meeting. “Several in the crowd think it’s positive but they didn’t share that.” However, she was pleased MP Colin King attended the meeting

after stating in December that he would not. The meeting was arranged by the Marlborough District Council. Another meeting was held at the Marlborough Convention Centre in Blenheim last evening and one is planned for Havelock Hall at midday today.

Injury awareness a spinning success Organisers of the MGC Student Expo Day, Katie Cunningham, Hayley Millard, and Sarah Laybourne.

MGC holds annual Student Expo Day Marlborough Girls’ College held their annual Student Expo Day on Friday, showcasing various clubs and committees to students. Head of School Council prefect, Sarah Laybourn, said it took two weeks to organise. She was pleased with the turnout and said it looked really good. “Each prefect has a stall, there’s a

board for every committee.” Promotions and events prefect, Hayley Millard also helped Sarah to organise the event. “We have Mr Whippy, a bake sale, a sausage sizzle. “We’re promoting clubs and interest committees like SADD (Students Against Drink Driving), and all of the sports clubs,” said Hayley.

New events position established ment that the coordination job was established in response to a request from Grow Marlborough, a forum of business and visitor industry representatives brought together last year to help build the economic returns from visitors to the region. The council is funding the new role through a levy on commercial and industrial ratepayers while Grow Marlborough will provide support and guidance to the coordinator role. Mrs Witehira will begin work next month. She has been appointed for a term of three years.

Marlborough census deliveries get under way

A Marlborough woman Susie Witehira has been appointed to a newly created position of regional events strategy co-ordinator. Mrs Witehira was the regional project manager for Marlborough in support of the Rugby World Cup 2011. The Marlborough District Council said the new role had been created to support the tourism, business and events sector and build Marlborough’s ability to attract and retain events. The council said in a media state-

By Annabelle Latz Healthy competition between mother and son reaped huge rewards on Saturday. Fleur Hansby and her 20 year-old son Luke challenged each other at Marlborough Wine and Food Festival to see who could raise the most money for The CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust. “The people were great, some people were coming up and putting $20 in the bucket,” said Fleur. Between them, in one and a half hours, Fleur raised $151, Luke raised $135, and with the help of three other collectors they raised $680 in total. “We didn’t even have to ask; people just came up and put money in the bucket.” Following a cycling accident in 2006 when she biked into the back of a bus in Marshlands while on a training ride, Fleur is now a paraplegic. She was so grateful for everyone’s efforts on Saturday. “I had hoped it would be positive.” On Saturday morning a group of riders, including Fleur and founder of the Trust Catriona Williams who is now a C6/C7 tetraplegic following a horse riding accident in 2002, were led by Jon Cunliffe from Marlborough Bunch Riders, for a 90-minute loop to Renwick, and back to the festival. Fleur, who works at Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, has always cycled, and used to be heavily involved in squash and tennis in Marlborough. Three months after her accident, while she was still at Burwood Hospital’s spinal unit in Christchurch, her husband Nick bought her another bike. “I had played sport all my life. Just because I’d become a paraplegic, it didn’t mean it was going to change.” Fleur, who has done the New York City Marathon in her wheelchair, is looking forward to working more with CatWalk Trust, and incorporating sport into fundraising activities.

By Kat Duggan About 100 census collectors will be hitting the streets of Marlborough from this Saturday onward, to deliver census forms for residents to fill in by census night, on March 5. The collectors will also be issuing internet access codes to residents, so they are able to complete the forms online if they choose to, something Statistics New Zealand is encouraging. Marlborough area manager, Anne Smith, said it was important for everybody to fill out a census form, because the results help to determine how billions of dollars government funding was distributed throughout the community. “It is used to make decisions about what services are needed in Marlborough and where they should be, such as hospitals, kohanga reo, schools, roads and recreational facilities. “If certain groups aren’t counted they don’t get considered for funding or services.” Mrs Smith said the census collectors could be identified by a blue bag and a yellow identification badge. Collectors would return to homes following census night to collect any forms not filled out online, she said. Anybody who would be away on census night would be able to get a form from any motel, hotel or campground.

Jill Pendleton, of Rarangi, will be delivering census forms to houses across Blenheim, beginning this Saturday.

Statistics New Zealand are highlighting the importance of this year’s census, as the 2011 census had to be cancelled due to the Christchurch earthquake.

Remembering Cook’s stay at Ship Cove

By Chris Tobin A total of 92 people travelled on the Beachcomber cruiser on Sunday visiting sites that Captain Cook visited during his five stays at Ship Cove in the 1770s. During the day-long trip, visits were made to Hippa Island, Motuara Island, Cannibal Cove, Wharehanga Bay and Ship Cove. While at Ship Cove a wreath was laid at the Cook Monument to mark the centenary of its unveiling in 1913. Marlborough Historical Society president Dale Webb said those who took the trip incuded members of the society, as well of members of the Captain Cook Society, Cr Peter Jerram from the Marlborough District Council and others mainly from Marlborough. Peter Cozens of the Captain Cook Society laid the wreath at the memorial monument.

Captain Cook died in Hawaii on February 14, 1779, and the wreath was laid also in his memory in addition to mark the centenary of the monument unveiling on February 11, 1913. On that occasion a crowd of 2000 was in attendance. “Ship Cove was Cook’s favourite spot in New Zealand,” Mr Webb said. “He visited five times and spent about 106 days there in total.” “He maintained his ships Endeavour,

Resolution, Adventure on the various voyages, took observations, collected green vegetables to combat scurvy and generally explored the area.” Mr Webb said a society committee member Robin Cox organised the trip with John Orchard running things on the day. “We concluded the day enjoying a great display by a very large pod of dolphins that must have followed the Beachcomber for about 15 minutes as we made our way home.”

I take my wife out for lunch, but I feel that people should show their affection every day of the year.

My friends and I get together to have a special Valentine’s dinner, so I’ve been making lots of heart shaped decorations

Valentine’s doesn’t mean that much to me, it’s really just another day.

I don’t need Valentine’s to tell my husband that I love him, but it is nice to get red roses.

We celebrate Valentine’s all the time, we do go out for coffee or lunch as it’s nice to have a day that acknowledges affection.

I don’t really celebrate it, but it is always nice to get a surprise from my husband.

I see the council put an ad for this place to rent on a month to month basis. Well no one has been in there for almost a year. This is another waste of my money as a ratepayer. Surely there is someone on the staff who would love some cheap rent as who’s paying for the lawns to get cut while no one is there? You and me. Neil Wilson

Dear Ed, Re: Mr. Henry’s letter ‘MP’s Truancy,’ February 1, 2013. This letter reflects the poor understanding many New Zealand citizens have of their parliamentary system. Parliamentary Standing Orders require that, for a party to be able to vote unanimously, only a certain number of their MPs can be absent from the House at any one time. Regarding absences, ministers have first priority as one would expect, followed by those who have requested leave on compassionate reasons. Dear Ed, The vigilantes are out again. I would rather have horse droppings in the street than what all the cats do in my garden, at least the horse droppings are of some use for the garden. I know some folk clean up after their dogs but who washes the fences and power poles etc, after the dogs have christened them? As far as the horse man goes he is no more a drain on the tax payer than many others. And I’m sure the horse is happy wherever it is. Gotta go and tidy the back yard! Clarkie

Leigh McKendry will not have to worry about her grocery bill for a while. The Seddon resident has been named as one of the thirty Nationwide winners of a $1000 Supervalue grocery voucher. She is a regular shopper at Supervalue in Seddon, and had entered the recent Supervalue Fill the Pantry competition. “I was so surprised to find out I had won. It is a real bonus as I shop at Seddon Supervalue every week,” said Leigh. Kevin Kamat from the supermarket said her name was drawn from 20,000 entries. “Leigh has been shopping here for quite some time. I was extremely pleased to be able to give the gift voucher to a local.” The competition ran for three weeks, and two years ago there was also a winner drawn from the Seddon supermarket.

Life, real estate and life lessons Catching up for tea with happy new home owners is one of the best parts of Debbie Webster’s job. But the Mike Pero Real Estate franchise owner never seems to have enough hours in the day, so is looking forward to finding someone to work alongside her with her business venture. Debbie caught up with Sun reporter Annabelle Latz, for a chat about the day to day life in the world of real estate sales, and other things that make her smile. She is well known around the region in her black Holden Commodore, which does not go quite as fast as some people may expect. “What’s a granny going to do with a V8?” she asked, saying her 31 year-old son would appreciate it more. But the V6 engine still has a fair bit of grunt. And Debbie does love cars. She wishes she could be in Christchurch this weekend for the National Super Saloon Championships, as she is sponsoring the new South Island Champion Ian Burson and his team from Nelson. “I’m a real petrol head, I also love motocross.” Having entered the game of real estate 15 years ago, she knows all about long hours, open homes and endless market research. She bought the Mike Pero franchise twelve months ago, and her feet have barely touched the ground. “I had always been interested in real estate,” she said. Born and bred in Otago’s Balclutha, Debbie had always watched with interest the housing market, and what properties sold for. In 1992 she moved up to Blenheim, and for five years she and her husband at the time ran the Top Spot restaurant on High St. “I did a bit of everything. I cleaned the loos, did PR, worked in the kitchen, but front of house is what I loved the most - making sure everyone was having a good time.” She said it was very enjoyable, and they met

some great people. “It was an identity in Marlborough. It was basic old school food, we’d do 200 meals on a Friday lunchtime. We had six dollar meals for the oldies, and bottomless cups of coffee for a dollar.” They sold the restaurant at the end of 1997, and in 1998 Debbie decided to study real estate. From when she started her profession in 1998, Debbie said the influx of the digital age has meant many changes. “Up until a couple of years ago I was allergic to technology.” Debbie works from home, and said 90% of her business is from online inquiries. There are three components Debbie looks at when selling a house; pricing, presentation and promotion. “If something is not working, you have to change it.” Many of Debbie’s work principals are used in everyday life too. “I treat people as if they were in my shoes.” For each sale Debbie makes, a portion goes to CASPER, an organisation assisting suicide prevention within families and communities. “The stats for deaths in New Zealand are mind boggling to say the least.” Debbie loves seeing young couples with small children placing priority on buying a property with trees to climb and enough room for a vegetable patch. “For me that is a real buzz, getting back to how I was brought up.”

Vikki works with Claire, the owner of Smoove, making coffee, frappes, waffles, chips, and providing ice cream, sandwiches, slices and more.

Vikki said she is particular about food and drink, and believes consitency is the key. As a barista, Vikki said she has pumped out up to 400 coffees a day in the past. “I made my first coffee at 19, and I haven’t looked back since. “You’re always striving to make someone’s day, and it’s so much fun to crank out the machine.” Vikki also loves the people aspect to hospitality. “I love having a conversation everyday with someone, whether they are a regular or a tourist.”

A passion for children has inspired full time Blenheim mother, Claudia Wiesner, to provide Kiwi kids with the luxury of feather & down bedding, duvets & pillows, hence the name ‘Babyclouds’. Claudia set up BabycloudNZ Ltd, after being unable to find the quality baby bedding she was used to in her homeland of Germany, when her daughter, Sophia, was born in Blenheim 19 months ago. With the help of her husband Oliver Wiesner, and eldest daughter, Leila Marie, who Claudia says was the ‘research wizz’ behind the business, the

Riverlands School working for the future A major feature of Riverlands is the historic and iconic Cob Cottage. It was first built in the early 1880’s on what was known as the Riverlands Run established by Charles Redwood. www.mastercraft.co.nz/ideas for ideas and inspiration

By Kat Duggan Riverlands School has been a part of the Marlborough community for over 100 years, and it has come a long way since its humble beginnings at Cob Cottage. Starting with 16 students in 1906, the school now has a roll of 215 pupils, and a strong focus on ensuring the future of its kids, according to Principal Dave Parsons. “Our school Motto is ‘learning to learn, learning to live’, so we’ve definitely got a focus on children leaving the school as constructive citizens, and that is part of our learning regime, as well as being numerate and literate, we still need to keep sight of that vision.” Mr Parsons added that they could not do the job without the support of the school parents, saying he prided the school on being a full primary semi rural school, and having great kids, and great parents. One hundred and seven years since its establishment, the school still has a strong affiliation with Cob Cottage, which is now a part of the school emblem. “We can easily walk down the bike track to it, there’s not many schools in the country where you can turn around and say that they’ve still got their original buildings.” The school has recently expanded, building new classrooms on a neighboring property, and expanding the outdoor area, which includes a field, tennis courts, and a fruit and vege garden. Mr Parsons said the new additions to the school have been very successful, and the focus for 2013 will be on developing e-learning within the school, using their computers, iPads and data projectors. “The focus is now professional development for teachers, and pedagogy, which is how to teach, so it’s improving our teaching skills and using the tools we have, to do the best we can.”

Riverlands School principal, Dave Parsons, works with Paige Norton, 5 (left), and Ezekiel Lyall, 5, on their new spelling words.

Going digital message in the mail The going digital television message is being delivered to letterboxes throughout Marlborough “With less than 100 days to go until Marlborough goes digital, it’s really important to keep people informed about what they need to do to make sure they keep enjoying watching their favourite programmes,” said Greg Harford, national manager. The package includes information about the equipment needed to go digital, specific regional information, digital recording advice and also includes information about the going digital targeted assistance

package. “At the moment, about 47,000 households in the South Island are still to go digital so it’s great if you have already made the move. “However, it’s also good to check with your friends, family and people within your community to make sure they’ve received their information pack if they haven’t gone digital,” said Mr Harford. “If you haven’t received your pack, if you’d like more information, visit our website www.goingdigital.co.nz or give our South Island team a call on 0800 838 800. In addition, before April 28, Going

Digital advisers will be out and about throughout the South Island chatting with people and discussing what needs to be done to make sure everyone can keep on watching TV.

Housing affordability considered The Government is looking at changes to the way councils charge for new sections and other developments by releasing a discussion paper on Monday as part of its work on housing affordability and local government reform. “Section prices have more than doubled in the past decade. A significant factor has been the sharp rise in the development contributions charged by councils. The average charge nationally has increased from $3,000 per section to $14,000 per section over the past decade, an increase of 360%, and can be as high as $64,000 per section. These costs need to be contained if more kiwi families are going to be able to afford their own home,” said Minister of Housing Dr Nick Smith.

Strong field in SI stockcar champs Darrell Bate Motorsport fans will be heading to Eastern States Speedway in Renwick on Saturday evening as an estimated 30 competitors will go head to head for honours in the 2012/13 Renwick Meat Centre South Island Stockcar Championship. Local driver, Ralph Gillespie will endeavour to secure the title win for the second time after taking victory in 2009/10 and a second place last year. Gavin Marshall, Brent Goulding, Daryl McDonald and Ricco Gray will also be hoping for a great result on their home track with the possibility some other Blenheim racers joining the

list before entries close for the event. Many competed in the national championship in Christchurch last month all missing qualifying with bad luck but as a collective, the Eastern States Speedway Titans Stockcar Team were runner up in the NZ teams’ title held in Palmerston North a couple of weeks later. The first of two southern title championship meetings to be held at Eastern States Speedway this season, the stockcars always generates interest from many tracks due to the spectator following that the class attracts. The club’s committee hope that many local families and

fans will support the event as well as looking forward to March’s South Island Modified Championship. Gates will open for Saturday evening’s meeting at 6pm with racing starting at 7pm. Another local driver will be concentrating his efforts towards success in his national championship event this weekend is Paddy North. He will compete against nearly 40 other Super Saloon drivers from around the country over Friday and Saturday evenings at Woodford Glen Speedway in Christchurch. Updates on North’s progress can be found at www.paddynorth.co.nz.

Coast to Coast achievable By Annabelle Latz She stood beside her bike at 5.45am last Friday morning, in semi-darkness, and suddenly realised what she was embarking on. However, Mandy Macfarlane described the Two Day event of the Speight’s Coast to Coast as a fun couple of days, and encouraged anyone to give it a go. The 42 year-old admitted she did question her actions when she pushed the ‘Enter’ button for the race mid last year, but she loved both the training and the race. “It was a long couple of days, but it was great.” Mandy, who has a vineyard and makes leather garments, said her approach to the training was quite ‘low key’ and her goal was to complete the race. “Anything can happen, the goal is getting to the end, that’s for sure.” The world of kayaking, trail running and cycling was not new to Mandy, who has already completed four Spring Challenge

Mandy Macfarlane competing in the Two Day event at Speight's Coast to Coast at the weekend. She says it was great fun, and very achievable for many people.

events, which she has taken part in at different spots of the South Island. She said the bike was her weakest point last weekend, and the kayak was the most enjoyable. “I’m a bit of a slugger,” she said,

about the mountain run over Goat Pass, where she slightly pulled her calf muscle, but kept going. “I don’t have many speed options. But in the back of my mind I thought I had to keep going, because there was no one to pick me up.” A bacon and egg sandwich worked wonders on the nutritional front. Mandy was very pleased with her total time of 17 hours and 40 minutes for the 3km run, 55km cycle, 33km run, 15km cycle, 67km kayak and 70km cycle. “Everyone who does it loves it. Anybody can do it if they want to.” Mandy said it was a very friendly event, and people of all shapes and abilities take part. “Everyone is out there to have a good time, and encouraging and helping each other.” She wanted to thank her daughters Pippa and Kerry, and her husband Tim for being such a fantastic support crew. “I’ll do it again,” she said.
