White dolphin duo Sightings in Marlborough Sounds

Chris Tobin Not one, but two rarely seen white dolphins have been sighted in the Admiralty Bay area of the Marlborough Sounds. “We thought there was one but there are two,” said dolphin researcher Katie Halliday. “They’re common dolphins just under 2 metres, about 1.8m.” Ms Halliday, a field assistant for a

Felix passes away, aged 103 Chris Tobin In January shortly before his 103rd birthday, Marlborough’s oldest man Felix Herd told the Sun he was aiming to get to his 104th birthday. On Saturday, however, Mr Herd passed away peacefully at the Springlands Lifestyle Centre in Blenheim. “He was pretty good up until a week ago but then he began to slip,” his son Graeme said. Mr Herd spent his entire life in Blenheim. “He lived mostly at Grovetown and attended the Grovetown school when it used to be on the main road”. He worked at various occupations – painter and paper hanger, glazier, in a
hardware store, paint shop, on a farm, as a Newman’s bus driver and finally, as a painter at the Woodbourne base. Mr Herd was a keen rower in his younger days competing for the Wairau club and he played football. A proud possession he retained was a medal presented to him in 1927 for most improved player. Mr Herd’s wife Jean predeceased him in 1990. He is survived by six children – daughters, Alison Weaver, Marie Price, Fay Kilworth, and sons Noel, Brian and Graeme, as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Mr Herd’s funeral service will be held at the Mayfield chapel at 1pm today.

Multicultural festival a success Hundreds attended the Marlborough Multicultural Festival in Pollard Park, Blenheim, on Sunday afternoon. Margaret Western of the Marlborough Migrant Centre which organised the event said they were delighted with the numbers attending given that there were a number of other events on at the same time. “We had a very good attendance; there was a huge crowd there.” She said the festival showed the ethnic diversity of Marlborough and showcased the talent of the people. A total of 31 performances were held during the day from groups representative of the Pacific, Japan, China, Chile, Vietnam, Thailand, Vanuatu, Easter Ivsland, and others. People attending could also enjoy a vaste range of ethnic food.

White dolphin duo spotted in sounds inbriefThe Sun Continued from page 1 “The white dolphins are fairly rare although they do pop up occasionally like the white hump back whale in Australia.” Migaloo, a white humpback whale, was spotted last September off Australia’s Gold Coast and has been monitored since he was first seen in 1991. Danny Boulton of French Pass Sea Safaris said he had seen one of the white dolphins. “I caught a glimpse of a white dolphin but it’s the researchers from Cawthron and Texas A and M who are picking up on them.” New Zealand marine researchers have worked in Admiralty Bay for many years and have been joined by Texas A and M University from the United States. “It’s interesting to go back,” Mr Boulton said. “Pelorus Jack was a white dolphin.” Pelorus Jack was a famous Risso

white dolphin at Admiralty Bay in the early 20th century which escorted ships through French Pass. Mr Boulton said this summer dolphins had been coming into shore at French Pass in large numbers. “Since we’ve been here 20 years the bottle noses have been coming in regularly but not as regular as
this year. “We’ve had a stunning season for dolphins; where else do you get that sort of activity?” Ms Halliday said Admiralty Bay was a unique area because it was shared by a variety of marine species including four dolphin species - bottlenose, dusky, common dolphin and orca.
Pelorus Jack, a famous white Risso dolphin, was often spotted from 1888 until 1912 in Admiralty Bay between Cape Francis and Collinet Point near French Pass. Approximately 4m long, Pelorus Jack would swim alongside ships for up to 20 minutes at a time, often guiding them through dangerous parts of French Pass. Pelorus Jack is believed to be the first sea creature ever protected by law in any country.
Fire caused by possum? Annabelle Latz The cause of last Wednesday’s blaze in Sixteen Valley is not yet confirmed. A va l ley over f rom Cloudy Bay Business Park, a kilometre-diameter fire, covering eight hectares, was spotted in the early hours of last Wednesday morning by a passing truck driver on SH1. Thanks to the hard work of local farmers and rural fire crews, it was quickly well contained. David Western, whose property the blaze was on, thanked the fine work of the fire crews. “They did a wonderful job indeed. I can’t thank them
enough, all the volunteers too.” “We were fortunate to catch it when we did.” Favourable conditions of dewy ground and no wind helped their cause immensely. “It was only a small fire, it was just a little one under the powerline.” After judging its placement, David’s guess was the fire could have been caused by a climbing possum. “But I would be purely guessing at that. I wouldn’t really know, to be honest.” The power pole had a possum guard on it. Brian Tapp, operations manager at Marlborough
Lines, said correspondence was continuing with the Rural Fire authorities, to determine the cause. He said 17,000 power poles around Marlborough have possum guards on them now, after an eight year project. There are 35,000 power poles in the region, with many being urban-based which do not require possum guards. “Marlborough is leading the system in New Zealand in this.” “I know possums have been very restricted, but I can’t say they will never get Brian Tapp; operations manager at Marlborough Lines past the guards.” with a possum guard.

Police are asking Blenheim retailers to come forward with information about any theft of stock after they recovered “tens of thousands of dollars” worth of wine, hardware and other items from a Blenheim motel. Police arrested a 46-year-old Blenheim man for possession of cannabis and utensils after they were issued a search warrant for the motel in February. During the search, police also found eight boxes of items believed to have been stolen from large retail and specialty stores in Marlborough and throughout the country. Anyone with information can contact Constable Joe Sims on (03) 579 5279.
NEW A&P CHAIRWOMAN The Marlborough A&P Association has a new chairwoman. Christina Jordan was voted in as the association's new chairwoman at the annual meeting last week. She replaces Sam Rutherford who held the position for three years.
Census collection Marlborough residents who did not complete their census forms online, can now expect to be called upon again by census collectors, who will be picking up forms from today onward. Everybody who was in New Zealand last night should now have filled out their form, which is a requirement by law.

Main environment prize to Mistletoe trust Chris Tobin “We were surprised and rapt,” Mistletoe Bay Trust chairman Simon Heath said after the trust took out the supreme award at the Marlborough Environment Awards at the Convention Centre in Blenheim last Friday evening. “We didn’t expect to do that well because of the quality of the other entries,” Mr Heath said. The trust, which is a volunteer organisation, operates the Mistletoe Bay Eco Village and campground in the Marlborough Sounds and aims to give children the chance to experience the outdoors. Up to 1000 children stay at the camp each year and overall the number of people staying has risen to 7500 annually. “One of the key concerns of the trust now is to set up a fund to provide equality of opportunity for kids from
lower decibel rating schools,” Mr Heath said. He said the trust was looking at starting a ‘Back a Kid to The Bay’ with sponsorship and funding from businesses. The trust gives visitors to the bay a hands-on experience of sustainable living with recycling, energy-efficient cabins and on-site sewage treatment. It also won the Community Innovation and Sustainable Living Award. The public will be given the chance to visit the winning entries at field days in April and May. The other category winners were: Te Hoi-ere Bat Recovery project (Landscape and Habitat Enhancement Award), Marlborough Harvesting Ltd (Forestry Award), Zillwood dairy farm (Farming Award), Fromm Winery (Winegrowing and Horticulture Award) and Yealands Estate Wine (Business Innovation Award).

Hui to establish contacts
New parking system at airport
How well do you know Marlborough’s community services? Back by popular demand another fun ‘Speed Networking’ afternoon held by Supporting Families (SF) Marlborough will be held on Tuesday, March 19. Speed Networking is a three hour hui where Marlborough workers in the social, health, education and Maori sectors spend three minutes talking to
A new ticket pay-on-exit system for parking at Marlborough Airport is to be introduced next month. It will enable people to pay for the exact length of time they occupied a parking space at the airport. The new system should be more convenient for the travelling public, said Marlborough Airport manager Dean Heiford. “It will be more user-friendly than the existing system which, when it was installed, was the best option then available,” he said. It means that, where a flight is late or travel plans change unexpectedly, a car left sitting in the parking lot will not incur parking fines. People will take a ticket on arrival in the car park, pay at a ticket machine before departure, then use the ticket to trigger the barrier arm to leave. The new system will replace the present pay-and-display coupon dispenser which has proved difficult
one another before the bell rings to move on to the next person. This event has been hugely successful in past years and organisers say already registration numbers are looking good. “We have received more than 50 registrations already which is a great start,” said SF Marlborough field worker Lyn Caughey. The purpose of the event is for workers in government and non
government organisations to meet and establish contacts. MC for the event will be Mayor Alistair Sowman. The Speed Networking Afternoon will be held at the Marlborough Conference Centre and entry is a $2 coin. For more information or to register contact Cheryl or Lyn at SF Marlborough on 03 577 5491.

for some patrons to use at times. The honesty envelope option will also be removed. A recent survey of airline users by Marlborough Airport Limited showed that a third of those who responded still find some difficulties with the current parking system. A total of 187 people responded to a question asking whether the existing payment system was clear and easy to use. “The great majority don’t have any gripe about the actual cost of parking, which is on a par with other regional airports, but there is definitely concern about the ease and convenience of the ticket system itself,” Mr Heiford said. The new equipment is due to be installed late next month and should be in operation by late April. There will be no change to the short-stay parking places or the set-down-and-pick-up area directly outside the terminal building.

Beads store to close Chris Tobin A popular Blenheim store, Tiger Eye Beads on Scott, is to close. Owner Annabelle Crozier of Christchurch said the effects of the Christchurch earthquake had impacted on her store in that city and this had been felt in Blenheim also. A shop in Cuba Street, Wel-
lington, will be retained. “It's just a family business and we lost our Christchurch store in the quake which has made it harder.” The Blenheim business has operated for six years. Store manager Joey Mortimer, who has worked at Tiger Eye Beads for three years, said she was going
to miss the customers. Children came in to make bracelets and the business also did a good deal of repair work. “We do all sorts here; we're going to be missed by the community I'm sure.” The business will officially close on March 12.
Sunshine hours up for February Kat Duggan Blenheim has had its sunniest February in 45 years, with the second highest sunshine hours on record for February in the region. According to statistics from Plant & Food scientist Rob Agnew, Blenheim had 291.1 hours of sunshine during February 2013, the second highest total on record since 1930. The highest Blenheim total for February was 298 hours in 1968. The long-term average sunshine hours for the period is 225.5 hours, 29 percent lower
than last months total. This February was a stark contrast to the same period last year, in which 133.6 hours of sunshine were recorded, the lowest on record for 84 years. Despite the high sunshine hours, the mean temperature for last month was actually 0.6°C lower than the long term average for February, of 17.8°C, at 17.2°C. “Frequent high pressure systems over New Zealand in February 2013 led to clear, sunny skies. However, clear skies also lead to loss of heat during the
night, and as a consequence, lower daily minimum temperatures and a higher daily range in temperature,” Mr Agnew said. Rainfall was also down for Marlborough in February, with just 18.6mm of rain, which fell on one day, February 4, just 41 percent of the long-term average rainfall for February, of 45mm. Mr Agnew said despite lower mean temperatures, the higher sunshine hours recorded for each month of summer in Blenheim made the summer of 2012-2013. “If days are sunny it feels like summer,” he said.

Diamonds and triangles Dear Ed, In response to the letter by Leigh Maddison, titled "Pedestrian Crossings" and dated February 22, I would like to say that the theory about a vehicle that is inside the diamonds painted on the road ahead of a pedestrian crossing having the right of way over pedestrians on the crossing is absurd. Believing in this theory, and propagating it, is wrong and dangerous. If this theory was right, then the same should apply to the triangle painted on the road ahead of a give way sign and, according to the theory, a vehicle inside the triangle would not
have a safe distance to stop before the right of way road. Then this vehicle should carry on regardless and expect the right of way traffic to stop and let it pass. It obviously doesn't stack up and triangles and diamonds are only road markings warning drivers and riders that they have to slow down and be prepared to stop and give way. Pedestrians do not have to take any notice of those road markings. They are only for drivers and riders, as mentioned in our Road Code. Cheers. Alain Bassin Blenheim

Dear Ed, I was so pleased to take part in the Relay for Life last weekend in Renwick. It was an amazing group of people and I think the overall amount raised to help Cancer patients and their families in Marlborough was around $52,000. However, I was saddened to hear that noise control was called to the charity event, which resulted in the quiet music being turned off along with complaints about the flood lights. Clearly the mean spirited and uncharitable residents expected us to walk in complete silence in the pitch black for the bi-annual event! I’m sorry that people felt the need to tarnish what was otherwise a very successful night with their nastiness. Well done to everyone who participated. Sore Legs
Wairau Boats Dear Ed, What fools let power boats onto the lower Wairau? Baldick's Bend is a popular place for fisher folks. On Saturday a power boat and water skier were up and down. Worse still the boatie showed no thought for the people fishing, going right over towards the roadside. Why can't they stick to the Sounds? Plenty of room there for their hooning. One boat wrecks enjoyment of many others up and down the river. Kim Kahawai

Dear Ed, How dare M & L Hodge brag about their three bird-bangers! (The Sun, March 3). Not only are these gas-run bird scarers a fire hazard, but they cause major noise pollution. We dread the ripening grapes, as thoughtless viticulturists protect their harvests by subjecting us to months of constant, irritating banging; twelve hours a day, seven days a week. We residents have to keep doors and windows closed to maintain our sanity. Such intrusive noise causes headaches, and upsets our pets. Vineyards should invest in nets to protect their crops, and not cause stress by invading what should be peaceful homes. The Marlborough District Council should increase the distance from homes that vineyards are permitted to fire their noise-makers, and remember that residents also pay rates. Judith Pearson Blenheim

Fundraising for a cure Nearly 10 years ago a beautiful baby girl was born, much to the delight of her loving parents. They named her Ashleigh and despite being born with a condition called Lymphangioma they knew she would grow to be one of the happiest and outgoing of children, as Celeste Lodewyk found out. Ashleigh was born with the rare congenital condition called Lymphangioma which resulted in a large lump growing on her chest and some permanent damage to her hand. She was referred to reconstructive surgeon Professor Swee Tan who performed a number of major operations and reduced the hygroma. Unfortunately the Lymphangioma will keep growing throughout Ashleigh’s life and in addition to it leaving her with a permanently dislocated left elbow, it has now begun to grow inwards. “Ashleigh has endured so much and the strength Ashleigh has shown throughout all this has been amazing and inspiring,” says a proud mother Kerry. Now at the age of nine years Ashleigh has endured nine operations, some of which were to try and straighten her fingers on her left hand. The next leg of Ashleigh’s journey involves having an MRI scan every two years so they can monitor how much the mass is growing. “Because the mass is growing inwards Ashleigh will eventually have to have more surgery once it starts interfering with her health,” Kerry says. “But Ashleigh’s no-quit attitude and beautiful smile has always shone through, no matter how daunting her situation is and for this she is much loved and cherished by her friends and family.” Ashleigh became involved with Cure Kids after she was picked by surgeon Swee Tan to participate in the Ticket
to Hope weekend in Queenstown last year. It was this experience which inspired the family to help fundraise for Cure Kids, an organisation which raises funds to aid vital medical research into finding cures for life threatening illnesses that affect children. “We love how the money raised goes into researching for cures. It’s our hope that one day a cure will be found for Ashleigh’s condition,” Kerry says. The family has carried out a number of fundraising events over the past year but one they are excited about is their up and coming Pirates of the CUREibbean themed fundraising dinner and auction. Organised by Kerry and family friend Olivia Harrison, it will be held on April 9 at Bamboo Garden Restaurant from 6-9pm. Tickets cost only $35 per person and there will be an exciting array of items up for auction which have been generously donated from all over New Zealand. Some include artworks, beauty therapies, dance classes, food, travel and photography vouchers to name a few. Guest starring for the evening will be Ashleigh who will be dressed in her pirate theme. “There is a little bit of pirate in all of us, so why not have some fun with it and come help us fundraise for Cure Kids.” For more information or to purchase a ticket email Kerry on mjneal@xtra. co.nz or phone 021 10 69 586.

Mr &Mrs Hot wedding dress trends for 2013 They have been a hot topic on American catwalks recently, especially now that bold colours have begun to dominate. The five main trends include colour, portrait backs, peplums, lace and convertible gowns. To explain what they are, here is a breakdown. - Colour: Brides no longer have to feel bound to 'virginal all-white palettes', but instead the trend has given way to a stampede of crimson creations. - Portrait or 'illusion' backs: Adding a touch of elegance and romance, the portrait back wedding dress has a detailed back. Designers say thanks to Twilight's Bella and her portrait backed wedding dress this trend has made its comeback.
Wedding planning at its best
- Peplums: A sexy silhouetted style which allows brides to flaunt their shape. - Lace: Whether you go for lace inserts or a complete covering in lace, lace embellished wedding dresses are hot right now. Convertible gowns: In other words... two dresses in one. Brides love this option for three reasons. They can have a ceremony and a reception dress that totally co-ordinate, taking off a skirt is easier than changing dress and you get two dresses for one price.
Above: The portrait backed wedding dress trend has made a comeback for 2013. Left: The peplum design is a sexy style which flaunts the brides figure.
Quirky vows Personalise your vows by including qualities about yourself that are funny or amusing, hobbies, or habits that can be incorporated into your vows. For example: "I (name), take you (name), to be my beloved wife. I promise to love you and

Walk to remember, walk to cure Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Fantastic views are a promise for you this weekend. If you are game to take up the challenge, that is. The tenth annual Mt Freeth walk, organised by Picton Rotary Club, takes place this Sunday morning. All money raised from the walk goes locally, to Child Cancer. In 2004 the first walk took place, for Picton’s 17 year-old Queen Charlotte College student Annella McNicholl, who had cancer. For two years she had been receiving treatment, including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, for Ewing’s Sarcoma, a bone cancer mainly affecting children and young adults. The first walk was organised by her family friend Joanna Huntley, and about 200 walkers joined in. Annella was flown to the top of the 622 metre peak by helicopter. She passed away just three weeks later. Annella’s mother Ann McNicholl is one of at least 250 walkers that takes part each year. “The first year was great, we had all Annella’s friends and Annella. The next year was very hard. The walk is a lovely way to remember her, and others who have passed away.” Ann said they, and Annella’s two older brothers, did lots of tramping as a young family. “She always enjoyed it, we always had lots of
fun.” Once, they built a raft made of manuka poles and plastic barrels and spent five days rafting down the Clarence River. “She was a bit of a girly girl I must say, but she didn’t like to miss out on anything.” Ann said the views from the top of Mt Freeth are amazing, seeing all of the Marlborough Sounds, and on a clear day Mt Taranaki can be seen. Kurt Trixl from Picton Rotary Club said it is a great walk for anyone, of any capability. “There are all sorts of different people who do it. Older people do it too – they crawl, but they make it!” “I’m just thrilled to bits that Rotary has taken it on, and money is being raised to support children and families in Picton,” said Ann. Reaching the summit takes the average walker about an hour and a half, with a 50 minute descent. It may be a good idea to put some extra coins in the backpack, for the barbeque and ice creams at the top of the mountain. “It’s quite surreal getting to the top after the last bit that is very steep, and seeing people eating and enjoying the view. It’s wonderful!” said Ann. Mt Freeth is usually closed to the public, so this is a great opportunity to experience it. “I encourage everyone to come, it’s a fabulous morning. Everyone is bound to enjoy themselves,” said Ann.
Ann McNicholl is encouraging lots of participation for this Sunday's Mt Freeth walk, which raises money for children with cancer. Ann's daughter Annella (in photo) passed away from cancer 10 years ago.
Picton to open new puppet theatre this weekend Kat Duggan Picton Puppet Theatre will be opening this weekend, with two performances of their show on both Saturday and Sunday. Mr Monkey & the Magic Flying Carpet, is a puppet show aimed at children, aged 4 to 14, however theatre manager Bruce Anderson said a number of adults have been popping in to watch rehearsals. Bruce has been working on the puppet show for the past 18 months, spending a lot of his own time and money to put together the world class show. He said with the possibility of the ferries leaving Picton, he hoped to keep attracting tourists to the area, to support local businesses, who Bruce said had been
a great support, with nearly 70 local sponsors behind the project. “We want to give people a reason to come to Picton, and to stimulate the local economy,” he said. The educational puppet show, based on mateship and acceptance, will run twice daily, on Saturday March 9, and Sunday March 10, at 11am and 2pm. The show is 40 minutes long, and is followed by a workshop, where the audience is invited to ask questions, and have the opportunity to look at the puppets and set up close. Tickets will cost $10, and can be purchased at the door, or can be pre-booked by emailing Bruce, at dramatrix@bigpond. com.

The old Havelock school was converted into backpacker style accommodation back in the 1960s and is named after the school’s most famous pupil, Baron Ernest Rutherford of Nelson, creator of modern atomic physics. Another distinguished former pupil was Dr William Pickering, an eminent scientist in space exploration with NASA in the United States. “We get a lot of young pyhsics students from overseas staying here. I can guarantee you’ll go away brighter after staying here,” owner Bruce Lindsay says. The building dates back to 1883 and has old photos of how it looked when Ernest Rutherford was a pupil. Antiques roadshow coming to town Kat Duggan Marlborough Girls’ College will be holding an antiques roadshow style fundraiser this week, to raise funds to go towards their new visual arts complex. Event organisers, Ros Gibson and Jane Vial have put together two events, on Friday March 8, and Saturday March 9, to raise funds needed to finish their new building. An evening with Peter Wedde & Dick Nardella on Friday night will include an auction of some collectors’ items, as well as trips, weekends, and dinner packages. “There will be a range of items up for auction, starting with more affordable packages, and moving up to more exclusive items,” Ros said.
The auction, which will be conducted by Dick Nardella of Bayleys Marlborough, will be followed by a presentation by Peter Wedde, a New Zealand antiques guru. Peter will be appraising and sharing the stories behind ‘Marlborough’s hidden treasures,’ which will include mainly items that have a connection with Marlborough’s colonial heritage. Tickets to the Friday night event cost $35, and will include a complimentary drink and nibbles, and free entry to Saturday’s event, the Curios & Collectables Roadshow. The roadshow will be held at Marlborough Girls’ College, and is a chance for the public to find
out the value of their own hidden treasures. People are invited to bring along any items they have, such as ceramics, china, furniture, paintings, or jewellery, and have them valued by an appraiser. For those who do not hold tickets to Friday’s auction, the roadshow will cost $5 upon entry to the college hall, and appraisals will cost $10 for one item, or $25 for three. The day will include performances by students, and food stalls put together by the college’s food technology students. Tickets for Friday night are available at Marlborough Girls’ College, and ASB Bank.
Marlborough Girls’ College visual arts prefect, and Head of Arts department, Ian Fleming, oversee the plans for their new visual arts complex, which the antiques roadshow will be raising funds to complete.

Nativity Church, which is aimed at pre-schoolers. Rebecca and a group of dedicated volunteers will then be in the forum from 11am until 2pm, selling purple cup cakes. The team is encouraging people to wear purple in support of the day, and both the purple cup cakes, and Tunes for Tots will be at the cost of a gold coin donation. All money raised will be used by Kenbe La Foundation Charitable Trust, to help children in Haiti, Nepal and Kenya, to get the education they need to break the poverty cycle and change their lives. “When you think about some of the statistics, and how many children don’t get an education, and will never get an education, something which we take for granted in New Zealand, I think it’s important to get involved,” Rebecca said. Purple Cake Day was founded in Nelson by Emily Sanson-Rejouis, who lost her husband and two daughters in the Haiti earthquake in 2010. In the first year the foundation raised $30,000, and that amount more than doubled last year, when they raised $80,000. This year they aim to raise $100,000, will the help of the Blenheim community. “We need all the donations we can get, we just ask that you give up a coffee or something for the day, to help make education possible for children in countries where it is often impossible,” Rebecca said. The foundation also encourages schools to get involved, and this Friday, Riverlands School will be holding a Purple mufti day, with all proceeds going to the Kenbe La Foundation. The public is also encouraged to make donations at everydayhero.co.nz.

Rapaura School ‘in the swim’ Kat Duggan Rapaura School yesterday held their Junior Swimming Demonstration, a chance for the children to show off the skills they have been learning in the school pool. Parents of children at the school were invited to the event, to watch them show off their freestyle, backstroke, and flutter board skills. Room four teacher Jane Hall, said the school had to separate the junior and senior swimming event, as the number of students was growing rapidly. “This year we [the junior school] are having our own swimming sports, the children are very lucky to have the opportunity to swim everyday, and it’s a chance to show parent’s what they’ve been doing,” she said. Each class had the chance to demonstrate what they had been working on, finishing the day with a relay.
India Kennard, from room 4, comes up for a breath during the swimming demonstration at Rapaura School on Tuesday.
Super Sara Blenheim’s Sara Gane, 14, won a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke at the national age-group swimming championships in Wellington at the weekend, and silver over both the 50m and 200m distances. Her 50m and 100m times were also Nelson-Marlborough open records, the best times ever in those events for a female swimmer of any age.
Bracewell ruled out New Zealand coach Mike Hesson says Doug Bracewell was ruled out by injury and not any disciplinary issues after he was scratched from today’s first cricket test against England. Bracewell didn’t even venture to University Oval for a fitness test and was ruled out while his team-mates trained this morning. He suffered a puncture wound to his right foot which didn’t require stitches after he stood on a piece of glass during a cleanup at his Napier home on Saturday.
Dream contract Former Hurricanes and Blues first-five Jimmy Gopperth has picked up a dream contract with European rugby champions Leinster. The 29-year-old will move to the Irish club from Newcastle on a two-year deal at the end of the northern season
Alvyn Meiklejohn Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers’ & Premiers’ School’s Competition met and competed in the second round last Friday afternoon. Play from the year’s 5/6 Section 1 saw some improvement in these mostly new teams. On court 4, an evenly matched game was played between Fairhall Balloons and Renwick Setters. Paige Sheridan from Fairhall showed a good serving style and led her team to victory in the first set 25-19. In the second set Abby McLeod from Renwick showed she can serve extremely well despite her small stature.
Renwick won the second set by a slightly larger margin 25-15. At one set each and with time running out it was game on for these two teams. Fairhall just inched ahead by the required two points to win 10-8. Subway Fair Play Team of the Week was awarded to year 5/6 team Witherlea Smashers which is a team made up of mostly new players who tried their hardest and showed good sportsmanship. Premier Grade saw Renwick Panthers up against Fairhall Phoenix. Fairhall Phoenix may have been bottom of the points table last year but showed they are certainly not a team to underestimate this
term. With some fantastic serving from the whole team but in particularly from both Marvin Ricken and Liam Jennison, Fairhall made it a game of serves. The Renwick Panthers are new to this Premier Grade this term, whilst Fairhall have a little experience playing on the larger courts and with the harder volleyball from term 4 last year. Renwick Panthers need to learn to move, call and get under the ball to dig it up so as to avoid another game like this. Set scores were 25-7, 25-6, 25-5 and game to Fairhall Phoenix. Results.-
Eric Percy After a successful campaign to Manawatu a fortnight ago, Stormy Breeze looks set to pick up more of the cash when he returns to the same venue this week, judging by his trial on Saturday. The Marlborough OTB Association trial held at Waterlea on Saturday, Stormy Breeze led nearly all the way in the heat for 1 to 4 wins pace to score by one and a quarter lengths in a good 3min 05sec for the 2400m mobile start. He was chased all the way by Strawb's Fire Chip which also races well at the Manawatu track. He finished second in a close line-up for the minor placings just half a head in front of the fast finishing Iwannabebig with Tijuana Bromac almost in line for fourth place. Iwannabebig really caught the eye with his finish along the markers late in the run home. A one win horse he was racing against those that had theee or
four wins. In preparation for the coming Westport grass track meeting, a heat for maiden pacers was held on the grass track. This was won stylishly by Way Up High with Jack Best in the sulky for his mother Anne Marie. Coming down the outside with a late burst, Way Up High won by a length from the pace-making Daily Delight in 3min 17sec over the 2400m. The Nelson visitor Mapua Mabel was third. Other winners during the morning trials were Bionic Cullen in a slow 3min 20.7sec on the all weather track, while Time Ball won in an even slower 3min 31 in the heat for learners and non-winners. The next trial meeting at Waterlea will be on March 23. Something different with ‘Picton Pestival’ A Golden Bay brewer will be swapping local vermin for a pint in an unorthodox bid to raise awareness around the launch of a new festival in Picton that locals warn is not for the squeamish. The inaugural 'Picton Pestival of pest eradication' will be held at Waitohi Domain on Saturday March 23. The one day festival is being organised by Picton locals to create awareness and conversation around conservation efforts in the region. All proceeds will directly fund the on-going pest control efforts at Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary; soon to be opened to the public. Golden Bay’s Mussel Inn’s
novel offer of a pint for a possum tail was introduced in 2008 and has been hugely successful with a staggering 5000 possum tails already handed over the counter. “The folks that reckon ‘they know’ say that bounties don't work - well we reckon they have been offering the wrong sort of bounty!” said Andrew Dixon of The Mussel Inn. “While our offer is a bit of fun, the issue of pest eradication is deadly serious and we are right behind the Picton Pestival.” Visitors to the Picton Pestival can expect to sample food (wild and tame), try craft beers from the Mussel Inn and Golden Bear breweries, plus local wine from
Clos Marguerite. There’s also live music from Shot Band (Wellington), Emma Logan& Thornton Church (Blenheim) and Midge McCleary (Picton). There’ll be a range of expert speakers covering pest control to conservation. Free games, entertainment and pest contests for the kids. The event will be held on Saturday March 23 from 10am to 6pm at Waitohi Domain, Dublin Street, Picton. Adult entry $15 and kids free (when accompanied by an adult). Tickets can be purchased online at Eventfinder. co.nz , at the Kaipupu Info Shop High Street, Picton or at the entry gates

Molesworth road to close early due to fire risk The Acheron Road through Molesworth Station is to close from next Tuesday (March 12) due to extreme fire danger. Next Monday will be the last day people can make the road trip through Molesworth this open period unless sufficient rain falls to reduce the fire risk and prevent early closure of the road. The road through the historic high country station in South Marlborough opened to the public on 28 December 28, and had been due to be open until Sunday, April 7. The Department of Conservation, which manages Molesworth, will be monitoring the fire
risk in the station and if it reduces the road may re-open during the current open season. “We’ve had a steady flow of people through the station since the Acheron Road opened at the end of December,” said DOC South Marlborough area manager Dave Hayes. “We’re hoping most people who planned to make the road trip this open period have already done so and there won’t be many who miss out but we do regret any disappointment the early closure of the road causes.’’ Mr Hayes says early closure of the road is
necessary to protect the station’s working farm and outstanding natural and historic features from fire. “Movement of people and vehicles through the station increases the risk of a fire starting and fire could cause serious damage to the station’s cattle farm, its rare native plants and animals and its historic buildings. “We’re asking people making the journey between now and when it closes next week to take care to prevent fires both in the station and in surrounding areas. Conditions on Molesworth are currently among the driest recorded in recent years.”
