Drowning toll “One death is one too many”

Story and Photo by Celeste Lodewyk “Boating accidents happen so fast that people don’t have time to put on their life jackets, therefore to avoid drownings people need to be smart,” says Powerboat Centre Marlborough owner Richard Gilbert. Richard’s comments came following a report released yesterday by Water Safety which confirmed one drowning to date in Marlborough for 2013 and 40 nationally. This surpasses last year’s toll of zero drownings in the region and while a low number of drownings is positive the number is still too high, said Water Safety NZ chief executive Matt Claridge. “Know your limits, watch the conditions, wear a life jacket, don’t drink alcohol when out on the water and keep kids within arm’s reach. I’ll be repeating these same safety messages until the drowning toll is zero,” he said. Continued page 2

100 sea squirts found at Picton

How to reach us

The survey of Picton’s inner harbour for the invasive marine pest sea squirt Styela clava, has been completed and there have been 100 individual finds. Marlborough District Council Biosecurity Coordinator Jono Underwood said that settled conditions and excellent visibility meant that the work went quickly and they now knew that only small areas of the marina had Styela present. The sea squirts were found within the inner Picton marina basin and one immature individual outside the ‘coat hanger’ while still in the marina confines. “There was only one instance where individuals were found on a vessel – a small number attached to a propeller. A male, aged 67, was airlifted to Wellington on Monday afternoon with serious injuries to his arm, following an accident on a boat at Port Underwood. The patient was stabilised and treated at the scene by an ambulance crew from Picton and the Nelson Rescue Helicopter crew. The accident happened at approximately 1.45 pm.

found were carefully removed,” said Mr Underwood, He said the risk of moving the marine pest through vessel movements is currently low. “However, we do want to remind people that it is good biosecurity hygiene to keep all vessels free of hull fouling organisms and that highly fouled vessels don’t just cost more to run, they pose a risk to the marine environment.” Mr Underwood said scientists at NIWA and the Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnership were analysing the results and would soon be able to provide advice on the severity of the infestation and recommend next steps.

Drowning toll Continued from page 1 When accidents occur they happen so fast that there isn’t always time to react, and in particular with boating unfortunately there are some people still not wearing their life jackets, said Richard. “I have had people come in who have been in a boating accident who said they weren’t wearing a life jacket and found they didn’t have time to get them on as they were in the water in an instant. “One elderly couple in particular were very lucky that there were passing boaties who could stop to help, otherwise

they might not have survived. “It’s not easy to put on a life jacket in the water and the amount of people who have said these accidents happen too quickly to get one on goes to show how important water safety is. Once the cold water hits panic sets in and that’s when people really start to get in trouble,” Richard said. According to the Water Safety’s report just over 72 percent of this year’s drownings were men, 35 percent of drownings occurred at beaches, with rivers and tidal waters the second biggest killer at nine and eight deaths respectively.

Jamie ready for polls Jamie Arbuckle, 33 and a Marlborough District Council first timer, was the youngest and highest polling of all the candidates in 2010. With elections looming in October, he is ready for another “go”. He smiles serenely as he says: “In some form”. Last time, he challenged sitting Mayor Alistair Sowman, but won’t as yet be drawn on his decision. That is, apart from admitting that supporters want him to stand for the mayoralty again. He also admits that for part of his time as a councillor, his life was “hell”.

“The Sheard report was the hardest thing in my life.” Some management and established councillors, though not all, had united against him in the wake of his accusations about corruption in the tendering process. “I wasn’t getting my way and got backed into a corner,” he says of his allegations. “But it was amazing where it led.” The $140,000 report found that there were some unproven allegations, but that council also needed to make changes to ensure more transparency. “They asked me to leave at the meeting after the report came out. But I stayed firm.“ He is unrepentant, saying he’d do the same again. “It helped a lot of people and answered a lot of questions. “Some councillors later and quietly told me I had done the right thing.” Despite the furore, he speaks highly of council staff. “Very professional.” Good relationships were also maintained with most

other councillors throughout the whole process. Jamie says he is still against supercontracts where large outside firms have the tendering advantage. He will be voting against the proposal to group rubbish and recycling together for that reason. “Our smaller local firms don’t get a look-in.” He said some councils supported local business, looking beyond the cheapest tenders, and he believed Marlborough should too. He values the intensive course to qualify as a resource consent commissioner. “I’ve gained so much knowledge and a better understanding of the scale of things. “ He’d like to continue, adding wryly: “In some places, mayors do that job as well.”

This is the first of a series of interviews with sitting councillors.

“The CBD is dead” Jamie sees important challenges for the incoming council, especially in the Central Business District. “The CBD is dead.” And business here faces huge challenges he says. The wine industry was recovering from the recession, “but it’s still paying back losses incurred at that time”. With the issues with Clifford Bay and King salmon, along with the Safeair downsizing, he says we need to look forward. An incoming council with younger people, with more women, a mix of experience and from different walks of life was therefore vital.

Offer of help On September 4, nearly 5500 BNZ employees will be getting stuck into some of the thousands of odd jobs that voluntary organisations need done while the bank is “Closed for Good”. The programme sees BNZ branches around New Zealand close their doors for a day so that staff can help out community and not-for-profit groups. Last year in Marlborough, BNZers helped out at Marlborough Plunket, sorting donated clothing for needy families. Another team headed to the Marlborough Hospice where they spent the day with other volunteers doing general gardening and cleaning duties. To Russia with love

Blenheim teenagers Ruby Hunt and Andrew Brooks, both 17, headed out yesterday bound for Russia. The two home-schooled students are part of a team of 16 young New Zealanders working on an Orphans Aid International project. They are going to Kostroma, 270k north of Moscow, to assist at a summer camp for 38 orphans. The 38 children aged between five to 13 come from the Orphans Aid orphanage in Kostroma and both teenagers are agreed the need is great. Some, for instance, were just abandoned by their parents. They will join the scheme’s founder Sue van Schreven on the trip and also go to the orphanage home Casa Kiwi in Romania. Andrew has long been vitally interested in Russia and the needs of its people, and the chance to go came from church friends of his parents. Geoff and Gwenda Cavanagh. They visited when he was out and told his parents they would sponsor him for $4000. Grandparents and friends have helped bridge the rest of the $2000+ gap. While he had gone to Richmond View School with Ruby, the two young Christians had not been in contact about their plans and both made the decision to go to Russia, and to learn Russian, independently. Ruby had read Sue’s book “Rescue: Pursuit of the Ultimate Dream,” when she was fifteen, finding it inspirational. She is not one to hang around (as her breathless arrival at the Sun on her skateboard showed) and started raising

money immediately. Over the last year alone she has raised $4000 for the scheme. Her work at New World, which is done alongside her schoolwork, has funded her trip along with church family and friends.

Ruby has also started "Team Marlborough for Orphans Aid" hoping others will sign up to join her or donate to the cause she believes in. You can support this work by making a donation at www.livebelowtheline.com/team/ team-marlborough-for-orphans-aid

Having Problems with Your Dentures? • Have a fear of smiling? • Unable to eat what you want? • Sore gums? • Dentures shift, tilt and wander? • Trouble speaking clearly?

The Blenheim Meteorological station at the Marlborough Research Centre at Grovetown Park reports that June 2013 was slightly warmer than average, very wet and very overcast. The total June rainfall of 114.6 mm was 194 per cent of the long-term average of 59mm for the 84 years between 1930-2012. It was also the sixth highest June total on record for Blenheim for those years. The highest June total was recorded in 1943, 154.9 mm. June 2010 is the second highest total with 154.8 mm. Total rainfall for the six months January to June 2013 was 411.1 mm or 132 per cent of the long-term average.

The 111.2 hours sunshine recorded for June was 73 per cet of the long term average for June of 152 hours. It was the sixth lowest total on record for Blenheim. The lowest was recorded in June 1981 and the highest, 205.2 hours, was in 1959. However the mean temperature of 8.9°C was 0.3°C above the long-term average temperature for the past 27 years. Although there were a string of consecutive frosts late in June, none were particularly cold. The coldest ground frost so far in 2013, of -6.8°C, was recorded on May 29. The average daily wind run for June was 159.8 km, the lowest on record for

Blenheim over the 18 years that wind-run has been recorded at a height of 10 m. This continues the pattern of low wind-run that Blenheim has experienced over the past three years. The average wind speed was 5.13 kmh. The weather station records that it is “remarkable” how sheltered Blenheim is from the southerlies that can affect Southern Marlborough and pass through Cook Straight and buffet Wellington. During the storm on Thursday 20, climatologist Stu Powell recorded a maximum wind speed of 225 kmh at a weather station near Ward. In contrast the maximum wind speed in Blenheim tht day was only 44.6 km/hr.

Big Brother Watches Dear Ed, Did I hear a rumble and feel a quake? I reckon it was George Orwell turning in his grave at the irony of the US government calling Edward Snowden a spy. For those who haven't read Orwell's book "1984" it was about government surveillance, and public mind control, dictated by a political system) under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite that persecuted people's individualism and independent thinking as "thought-crimes". Snowden is not a spy, but a whistle blower informing the public of the US ( and NZ government?) potentially spying on us all. Obama is the spy. Is Key one too? If you haven't read "1984" read it. Question - is Marlborough an accomplice to the spying with the Waihopai spy base? Don Coyote

Dear Ed, Having re-read all the correspondence on climate change since the visit of Lord Monckton, I wonder whether some members of the public are confusing carbon dioxide with smog - solid, microscopic, airborne particles of carbon (soot), which, when mixed with sulphur dioxide (Rotorua's smell - and toxic to boot), nitrous oxide and a variety of miscellaneous nitrates (from deisel and other exhausts), which is in fact highly injurious to animal health, causing a variety of maladies all the way from carcinomas to emphasema and sore throats. Carbon dioxide, on the other hand, is a completely invisible and odourless gas which is usually produced by combustion, not necessarily with naked fire but most often by animal metabolism where oxygen which fuels the release of energy, is combined with carbonic wastes to form CO2 and breathed out. No one needs a PhD in anything, just a basic third form science text book, to know that CO2 is the basis of the photosynthetic cycle without which no life form as we understand it could survive. This is a completely different compound and should never be confused with smog. The suggestion of A. Bassin (Sun 26.06.13) that any members of the public should "lock themselves in their garage with their big 4x4 idling", apart from being repugnant, shows he has clearly confused CO2 with smog and worse still, with carbonmonoxide. Douglas Monks, This subject is now closed. -Ed.

Queen Street a ‘destination’ for many “Queen Street is the best street in Blenheim”. This was how retailer Andy Hall described Queen Street after 12 years trading his business Boots ‘n’ All at his premises for around 12 years. “Everything you need is here on Queen Street. People can bring their to-do lists and walk up and down both sides of the street and accomplish most of it here,” Andy says. With everything from banks, chemists and retail stores through to land agents, insurance companies and even a service station, Queen Street should be your first stop for everything you need. “All the businesses here are well known, all have great service and an even better selection of products and services,” Andy adds. Since opening on Queen Street, Andy says he has seen many positive changes which can be attributed to the overall success of the street’s businesses. “When we came here there was a supermarket across the road which now houses the Marlborough Theatre and two retail

stores, the street has been upgraded with paving stones, seats, more rubbish bins and the parking spaces were changed to parallel allowing more people to access the street,” he says. With tourist numbers on the rise, positive first impressions of Queen Street have been taken away with out of town visitors coming

back to shop again. “I have had tourists from Europe come in and say that their friend had been in my store two years ago and recommended them to visit when they came to New Zealand. “It’s these comments which make you proud to be a Queen Street retailer,” Andy says.

Warm up at

Pete Hydes and Eereena Norris are friendly faces greeting Queen Street visitors.

Station holds place in street’s history Pete Hydes has been a Queen Street identity for many years and often a first point of call for passing motorists or even locals wanting to stop for a chat. His Queen Street Service Station has been a landmark on the busy street for decades and has seen many economic and social changes in its time. “Queen Street is definitely a lot busier that it was in the earlier days and quite a bit to offer in the small area is from banks and pubs through to cafes and retail. “I have a lot of customers come in and share their memories of what Queen Street

used to look like. One in particular could remember there being a big factory for egg sorting right across the road from us and we later found out that my late wife’s mother worked there. “Another customer told me he once mowed the lawns around the station when he was in his teens. He is now in his 80’s,” Pete says. Accentuating the feeling of nostalgia within the service station is Pete’s collection of old matchboxes, petrol vouchers, New Zealand $1 and $2 notes and plenty of past photographs on the wall. Also part of the collection is an old horse-

shoe and a newspaper dating back to 1953 which Pete found under a step in his office. “The stories and all the pieces of history you hear from people are enough to write several books,” he laughs. The Queen Street Service Station was purchased by Pete in 1996 from Rhonda Denby and Paul Ashton and is one of the few remaining small independently owned stations in Marlborough. Pete had worked there as a mechanic before taking over the business and says it has been great being part of Queen Street and adding to its rich history.

PLANNING A FUNCTION OR EVENT? Renwick’s unique wedding venue Finding the perfect location for one’s wedding venue and reception is often one of the hardest decisions to make. To help make the decision easier, the Giesen Sports & Events Centre has an inviting wedding package which can be tailored to suit any needs. Function manager Alysha Hutchison and her team are happy to meet with people to discuss their wedding plans, as well as showcase what the

Giesen Sports & Events Centre has to offer. “Previous weddings we have hosted have been hugely successful. We have quite a unique location here and can cater for a wide range of functions and events,” she said. The Giesen Sports & Events Centre has a large room which can cater for around 150 seated guests. This room is complimented by an additional dance floor and an area for a live band

or DJ. For catering there is a fully equipped commercial kitchen where a chosen caterer can prepare any food. “We have a full range of options, equipment including tables, chairs, crockery etc which is included in our wedding package. “This package can be tailored to suit different requirement, so we welcome any enquiries and encourage people to contact us,” Alysha said.

Your first conference? No problem, here are some tips Holding your very first conference can be intimidating. Here are some handy tips for hosting a successful event that people will remember. 1. Decide on your staff Before planning for anything, it is important to decide on who will participate in the conference. 2. Get the Basics Down Once the staff is decided, it is important to hold weekly meetings and get the basics down on the paper; date, committees, topics, name of conference, fees, PH: 027 248 0583 location of conference, high schools to invite, lunch, etc. www.bbqcat.com 3. PLANNING A FUNCTION OR EVENT? The ultimate party venue The Old Marlborough Club is an extension of the Clubs of Marlborough facilities, hosting Community Groups in the earlier part of the week and a la carte lunches on Friday between 11-2. To keep up with changing cultures and to better service our diverse Membership the Club has now been tastefully transformed into the Ultimate Venue being able to accommodate weddings, 21st, special anniversary, BBQ`s , Spit Roasts or to farewell a loved one. Four unique areas within the facility provide the Ultimate Party Venue. This includes an intimate 100 seat restaurant that looks out

over the Taylor River. With full bar facilities this has to be the first choice wedding venue in Blenheim. The Lounge, with its open stone clad fire exudes a warm and inviting feel from a bygone era. The room lends itself to many function types being theatre seating for a presentation, a cosy drink and catch up with friends on a special occasion or as a quiet area during a wedding while others take themselves of to the dance floor. Yes the dance floor, this adds further to the ULTIMATE PARTY VENUE, flashing lights bringing back thoughts of the disco era,

parquet dance flooring, wall mirrors, Disco Ball and far enough away from those who wish to sit and talk. And if the weather is good as it is in Blenheim you can stroll out onto the deck overlooking the Taylor River and drink your wine under the party lights on the half covered deck. This is also a great part of the facility to have a spit roast or BBQ type menu. So any of these facilities within the Marlborough Club has the potential to more than suitably cater for a wide and diverse range of functions, but combined the

Combined Colleges Formal 2013 august 16

BALLGOWNS • Sizes 6 -24 • Exclusive labels • Mother of the Bride or Groom • Black Tie events • School Formals

Last year’s Combined Colleges Formal saw creativity and originality at its best, something organisers are hoping to achieve again this year.

Your Best Dress Address

Formal set in Wonderland If last year’s Combined Colleges Formal is anything to go by, this year will be another spectacular display of colour, originality and quirky outfit designs. The formal is being held again at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Friday, August 16. Working with the theme ‘Wonderland’ the Marlborough Lighting and Sound crew have been working their artistic creativity to create a special formal event that these secondary students will never forget. “We have a couple of surprises up our sleeves, this is an oportunity for us to let loose with lighting so watch this space, “ operations manager Alana Cairns says. “Some of the Marlborough Boys’ College students have been very imaginative and given us some great

PARK AVENUE FASHIONS

ideas to work with, so we are really looking forward to seeing it all come together,” she adds. In previous years the formal has drawn large crowds of onlookers who go to watch the parade of unusual transport and diverse styles of formal attire. As safety is always paramount at events such as this, security is urging people to adhere to the rules when arriving at the formal. “We will have safety barriers up to keep the public safe when vehicles are passing by the entrance, and we are urging people to take their photographs at home so they don’t hold up the procession,” Alana says. “Last year we got students through in under an hour which was a record for us, so we want this year to go just as smoothly,” she says.

Marlborough Light & Sound The Production Experts

Safety message Choosing a form of transport to this year’s Combined Colleges Formal is important to students who are wanting to make an impact upon their arrival. Whether it be a tractor, fire engine, hot rod, motorcycle or cherry picker, organisers have some guidelines they want people to follow. All vehicles are encouraged to park in Blenheim School in groups where they can have photos taken before driving through the entrance to the Marlborough Convention Centre. Visiting the whale spotters last Thursday, no calls were heard of ‘there she blows,’ as the weather continued to hamper the 2013 count. It was probably just as well, as according to whale counter Joe Heberley, calling a false sighting of a whale could result in “severe fines”. The correct way to gain a notch on your seat, Joe said, was to say “I think I’ve got something”, and, once confirmed, that was your whale. Each of the annual spotters, Joe and his wife Heather, Tommy and Johnny Norton and Ted, Ron and Peter Perano has their own chair, where they place a notch for each whale they spot. Joe, Tommy and Johnny joined the research initiative this time 10 years ago, using their whaling skills to spot whales from a tent perched at the end of Awapara Island, in Tory Channel. “We all used to do it, we’re all ex-whalers, and now it’s

about conservation. “After the whaling it was about ten years before we saw a whale out here,” Joe said. Using the ex-whalers expertise to spot the whales, DOC staff are able to collect samples from the whales using small darts, and track where they are travelling, and whether the numbers are increasing. Five years into the count the whalers were able to build a hut, with supplies donated from Mitre 10, Marlborough Roofing and ITM, and now new volunteers join the count each year. The count also acts as an annual catch up on old times for the men. “It’s nice to be able to come and do what we used to do,” Ted Perano said. At least four spotters are at the hut each day from dawn until dark, plus DOC staff on the boats, and staff from OMV New Zealand, an international oil and gas company. “The OMV people are usually here too, the main sponsors Without them we wouldn’t be doing it. Other than that it’s all volunteers,” Joe said.

Some of the whale spotters, Ted Perano left, Ron Perano, Tommy Norton and Joe Heberley.

Kids adopt a whale At just eleven years old, Rarangi’s Ella Schoni is the New Zealand youth ambassador of the National Whale Centre. Ella’s role is about raising awareness surrounding whale protection, as well as the history of whales in New Zealand waters, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds. Starting with her own class at Rarangi School, Ella has got her class mates on board, who will begin by adopting a whale. “We’re going to find a whale and make a name for it, and take a DNA

sample and microchip it and track it to see if it comes back next year,” she said. Ella and her classmate, Julee Pillans, 12, started their challenge last Thursday. The girls joined the Department of Conservation team, who are currently counting whales from their lookout on Awapara Island as they pass through the Cook Strait. The girls and their 27 class mates will choose their whale, judging by the patterns on the fin and tail of the mammal, which can weigh up

to approximately 36,000kgs. The girls have found a potential whale to adopt, although it has not been named yet.

Picton joins volleyball series An additional team, the Pictonites, has been added to the winter league volleyball series. They joined the Mixed/ Social Grade.in Week last Thursday evening at Stadium 2000. While they lost their first encounter against Mayfield Motors three nil, they are learning as they go. Now 24 teams are participating over three grades. Team Yoyo, mainly MGC players, moved up to C Grade and took Motley Crew by surprise to win the first set 2514. They also took out the second, but in the third Yoyo had trouble defending Lydia Hartstome’s serves and Motley Crew won easily 25-8. Team Brazil won their early set from Westmeat Geriatrics, but the Geriatrics improved as they warmed up, taking the game two sets to one. Woodbourne Social in just their second week of play were delighted to become the Fairweathers’ Fair Play Team of the Week. Desperate Housewives easily took all their three sets from Yet To be Decided 5-11, 25-9 and 25-8. Marlborough Musselleers have hit the ground running. Despite a few foot faults from both teams in their match against the Indevin Thunderballs, both teams had a good game. The Musselleers took all three sets 25-14, 25-15 and 25-19. Hunter Nicholls had an amazing few serves against The Young Guns. However, and unfortunately for them, experience wins much of the time and The A-Team showed them real teamwork, taking all three sets 25-18, 25-16 and 25-17. Marlborough Volleyball takes a break this week as Stadium 2000 hosts The Home & Garden Show and looks forward to seeing everybody on July 11.

Blenheim wins bowls tournament Over the past eight weekends the Whitehead Park Bowling Club has hosted its annual Club Winter 5's Tournament. Teams included Havelock, Picton, Awatere, Renwick, Springlands, Riverside, Blenheim and Whitehead Park. According to organisers the tournament was aimed at creating a fun event where players could enjoy "some good banter" all the while competing for the top three cash prizes. Results: First place winner for $1000 was Blenheim with 50 points and overall 554 points. Second place winner for $400 was Springlands

with 34 points and overall 437 points. Third for $200 was Picton with 34 points and overall 435 points. Fourth place went to Renwick, Fifth to Havelock, Sixth, Awatere and Seventh place was Riverside. Winning the Wooden Spoon was Whitehead. Organisers wished to thank Westmeat for their generosity in sponsoring the meat raffles and Whitehead Park Bowling Club for sponsoring the prize money. “Thank you to all participating clubs and to those who helped make this tournament a success as well as president Jan Chilvers who helped to organise players, teams and markers," said spokesperson John Galloway.

Ideal conditions for Harriers Small but competitive fields contested the Marlborough Harrier’s club cross country championships held at Stranraer Farm, Okaramio on Saturday afternoon. Early heavy fog cleared to make way for blue sky. The course was in pristine condition with the usual one or two boggy patches and a small amount of water in the creek. Junior titles went the way of Angus Kopua, Amber Bendell, Hunter Bendell, Lucy Bendell and Sophia Bendell. Joanne Farrell, Margaret Hazelwood and Rab Rodger claimed back-to-back titles in their respective veteran grades. John Kennedy was a comfortable winner in the veteran men’s race but the actual silverware went the way of Peter Mann by virtue that both John and runner-up Phillip Sim weren't registered club members. Other winners included Kiri Johnson, Andrew Curnow and Kay Leach.
