Chocolate support for Plunket

Story and photo by Glenise Dreaver The staff at the Makana Chocolate Factory keep Plunket Marlborough busy, they say. “We’ve had a baby here virtually every year for about eight years,” says Mel Chen, kitchen manager and a trained pastry chef. “It must be something in the chocolate.” So over the July school holidays, they have made a special effort to support Plunket Marlborough. Assisted by advice from Scott Manson, Makana’s general manager, also a trained pastry chef with experience in chocolate centrepieces, Mel and other kitchen staff set to work on a giant Humpty Dumpty. The project took some 20-25 hours, she said. Continued page 2

Straight words from Jessica “We need strong positive leadership,” says first time MDC councillor Jessica Bagge, who also says she will be standing again. She is one of the three of fourteen MDC councillors under fifty, along with Jamie Arbuckle and Terry Sloane. She was also the only new female face on the council, making for a grand total of two. The other is deputy Mayor Jenny Andrews. This area faces huge challenges she says and with issues like Clifford Bay in the offing, advocacy to ministers and government at national level is vital. “And we need that strong positive leadership to work effectively at that level.” Our current council, with its male and age profile, is still stuck in the corporate world of the eighties, Jessica says. “And they’re very resentful that I am staunch. “But there are superannuitants there just topping up their income. “There are still jokes about

getting me to butter the scones when we’re in the rec room. I’d love to understand where they are coming from, because that’s how you grow. But I can’t.” She also says that as the mother, joining the after-meeting discussions in that same rec room, where decisions are often made, are just not possible. “I didn’t think it would be like that. It’s just different for women.” Schools, education and health are vital factors in decisions made by young people with families about where to live and the council needs to be involved with advocacy in those areas too. “We must attract people in this age group to this area. The potential is here. They are the people who set up small business, then create more jobs.” And we need to have a damned good look at the CBD.” One area to which she is committed is of ensuring greater transparency at council by having discussion filmed on a webcam system, allowing for real time viewing of meetings, as well as

MDC first time councillor Jessica Bagge.

later viewing on the website. Few councillors were supportive of exploring that idea, she says but the idea has largely met with a wall of opposition. Cost was mentioned, but in frustration Jessica brought in a private firm to cost out the project. “$20,000. Say S30,000 once everything is added in. “They struggle with anything with too many zeros, they’ll just go along with that. But when it comes to a small amount like

this, which would allow people to really see what goes on in council, it’s different.” Election 2013 is time for the talkfest to be over, says Jessica. “We need to change the leadership to make things happen for Marlborough.”

This is the second of a series of interviews with sitting councillors.

An egg of an idea Look both ways Continued from page 1 After the body was created, chocolate features were moulded and limbs added. Then Mel had the fun part. A special booth was created with drop sheets. Armed with a spray gun, she covered the creation with an even coating of fine melted chocolate. It was a big surprise when she turned around as she finished and saw the size of the fascinated crowd that had gathered she said.

Staff hope to raise between $2000-$2500 during the time Humpty Dumpty is on display over the school holidays. After that, Mel thought he might be auctioned off. The fundraiser product is special nut-free Makana popcorn at $17.50 a 300g pottle and it is being sold from their factory on the corner of O’Dwyers and Raupara roads. Visitors can also enter a competition to guess his weight.

Steve Davis of MDC Freight has a problem with jaywalking pedestrians in Blenheim. It turned into an expensive problem a while ago when he had to throw the anchors out as a woman using her phone stepped straight out in front of him on one of the paved (non-pedestrian) crossings near the Secret Garden. He had a photocopier on a pallet in the back and the sudden stop saw it move down the van, doing $1800 worth of damage. His firm is liable for that. It’s not an unusual situation.

“People step straight out without looking. They’re phoning or texting,” he said, adding that the temptation to keep going was getting stronger. “But there’s so much trouble with ACC and insurance and the Police Serious Crash Unit….”

Clubs build up to 125th anniversary By Celeste Lodewyk A truly special milestone is being celebrated this year as the Blenheim Workingmen’s Club nears its 125th anniversary in October. The Blenheim Workingmen’s Club, now trading as the Clubs of Marlborough was first established in 1880 which makes it one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand, an achievement for a community like Marlborough, said CEO Lee Davis. In the build up to celebrations in October there will be a variety of displays to mark this significant occasion. One of these displays is a vintage car which has been sign written and parked outside the entrance to the Clubs of Marlborough and as time goes on more information will be added to it, said Lee. There will also be foyer displays starting Monday which will regu-

larly change to depict the decades from 1880 to present. “Assisting us will be t he Marlborough Vintage Car Club who will be putting different vehicles associated to the decades to add further impact. “Watching this display change with the decades will demonstrate how much the club has changed,” Lee said. These displays will build up to formalities which will commence on October 3 and run through until October 6 which will be the club’s 125th AGM. The club’s life grew out of a common interest by groups of men and as that developed it split into three styles of club; the Returned Services Association, the Marlborough Club and the Workingmen’s Club. As times changed and financial burdens increased on these clubs

there were closures throughout NZ. If it wasn’t for the ‘foresight’ of past and present men today to change and diversify with Marlborough’s needs, there wouldn’t be a club, said Lee. “We had a merger of our three clubs five years ago which was

quite unique for NZ, bringing the Marlborough Club, RSA and Workingmen’s Club together. “This was seen as something to future proof the club life in Marlborough and was something we did successfully,” he said.

Mother pursues son’s attackers Story by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim mother Sarah Hughes was left reeling by the vicious attack on her 18-year-old son last Friday which has left him with serious facial injuries in need of specialist treatment. Her son (who she does not want to name while investigations continue) was walking along the Taylor River between Henry Street bridge and Purkiss Street around midday when he was attacked from behind. He was punched in the head and when he fell to the ground, his attackers proceeded to kick him in the head. When he gained consciousness, he managed to get himself home. Once home he fell asleep. “I got home from work at 6pm and saw how bad he was and took him straight to Wairau Hospital,” says Sarah. “He was found to have a serious concussion, he had five fractures

to his eye socket and has nerve damage to his face. “He has loss of feeling to much of one side of his face and Friday (today) we are traveling to Lower Hutt Hospital to be referred to a specialist,” Sarah told the Sun. After leaving the hospital Sarah and her son reported the attack to the Blenheim Police at 9.30pm. She said her son is still in a state of shock and won’t speak out about his attackers, so Sarah has started her own investigation and is appealing for witnesses to come forward. “The Police took a statement from me and my son but because there was no news over the weekend I started asking around and put a plea on Facebook for information. “I had over 200 shares on Facebook and have since been given some names of persons who were (allegedly) there and took part in the attack.

“I confronted one of them and they admitted their presence. “All the names I have given to the Police, but I still need people to come forward with more information to help prove it was them,” she said. From the information Sarah has received, some of the attackers were known to her son, which has further angered her and increased her determination to bring them to justice. “I don’t know why they attacked my son, he won’t talk about the

On July 19, nominations open for candidates for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. The postal ballot runs in tandem with the local body elections. Those elected face a challenging task as the board is currently dealing with the issue of a budget deficit of at least $3m, as well as a criminal investigation into the death of a patient after surgery. Board members are elected by residents of Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman, rather than by region.

Sightings requested Ma r ine mam mal ecologist Deanna Clement is asking for any sightings of whales, dolphins and seals in the Marlborough Sounds. incident. But it still makes me sick to the stomach knowing what they did to him. “No one deserves to be attacked let alone kicked in the head so violently so I really need these people found and dealt with by the Police,” she said. Police have told the Sun they are still investigating the case, but need more information from the young man and the public. Sarah urges anyone who may have any information to contact the Blenheim Police.

Formal correction In regards to the Combined Colleges Formal story printed Wednesday, July 3 on page 17, it stated that “vehicles are encouraged to park in Blenheim School in groups before driving through the entrance to the Marlborough Convention Centre.” This has not been confirmed and it should have read; “At this stage the road management has not been sorted but all formal attendees will be notified well in advance.”

Councillors pay rise Marlborough district councillors to be elected in October will have a wage rise from $27,967 to $33,000, a sum recommended by the Remuneration Authority. The council has voted to retain its structure of a mayor, deputy mayor, four committee chairmen and eight councillors. Some will receive less than they have done however, as committee chairs will be paid $41,250 instead of the current $41,951. Mayor Alistair Sowman has a salary of $123,550.

By Glenise Dreaver The staff of the Community Care Pharmacy in the Warehouse in Blenheim are celebrating their listing as one of the top ten pharmacies in New Zealand. Co-owner Debbie Carter says proudly: "This is huge." Their success at the Pharmacy Guild of New Zealand's search for the Community Pharmacy of the Year is doubly sweet as they have only been running as a private business since May last year. That was when The Warehouse nationwide decided to shed all its pharmacy businesses. A totally unexpected redundancy meeting was held. Staff were “absolutely gutted" when they heard the news said Debbie. Community support became obvious, so she decided to do something. "I just fired off an e mail to Stephen Tindall asking if we could rent the patch and continue in business here. And, bless him, he contacted the current CEO, we got permission and it all rolled out from there." She and co-owner Krystle Cooper decided to take the risk and their result, which is based on a Neilsen customer survey, reflects the wonderful support and feedback they have got from customers, said Debbie.

Job cuts known in August By Chris Tobin A final decision regarding the number of jobs that will be cut by Safe Air at Woodbourne will not be known until the end of August. Safe Air general manager Heather Deacon said it was far too early to state how many jobs would be lost since a long consultation process was going on involving staff, the Ministry of Defence and the Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union.

“A proposal is one thing; but we’ve got to go through a process,” she said. Last month it was announced that the company would shed 84 of the over 200 staff employed at Woodbourne but Ms Deacon said it was too early to predict how many positions would be cut. “We’re in negotiations for contract extensions and we’ve having discussions with the Ministry of Defence over volumes of work. That outcome may have an impact on the proposal.” Since 2005, Safe Air has been completing upgrading contracts for the Royal NZ Air Force’s StuDio C-130 Hercules and P3 Orion aircraft fleets. Air NZ, which owns Safe Air, said in a media statement last month that these contracts were Premium Dentures

coming to a close over the next 12 months and it was necessary to reposition the business for reduced future work flow. The Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union said the planned staff cuts were due to contracts ending and the high New Zealand dollar which made it difficult for Safe Air to secure international contract work.

Dear Ed When is a caring person going to do something about what is called "Home Invasion?" There is NO EXCUSE. Our home (be it ever-so-humble) is our castle. No one should come in uninvited. Who is against a mandatory sentence of TEN YEARS for this dispicable crime? Even if the of-

Council Consultants Cost Dear Ed I see there is debate about the cost of the Marlborough District Council hiring consultants to tell them how to plan Blenheim's expansion, and what colour to paint houses in the Sounds. Council does not seem to want to say how much Boffa Miskell are paid and the hourly rates consultants charge.

I came across a letter (last year) to the paper raising the matter to which Council's corporate finance manager replied in the year ended June 30, 2012, the council coded $1.486 million to "professional fees and consultants," out of expenditure of $80 million. No wonder rates are high. Frank Henry

Shannon makes it to Melbourne Shannon Huntley, the ex-Picton man who has been cycling from Perth to Melbourne to raise funds for the Western Auastralia Cancer Council and The New Zealand Cancer Society’, arrived in Melbourne at 11am on Tuesday July 2. He had completed 34 days of riding alone and unsupported. However, he has had a large group of people in both Australia and New Zealand following his daily progress through his website blogs. Many he did not know, but all of the messages were supportive and encouraging. In particular, two Australian brothers keenly following his progress had themselves completed a long distance ride round Australia a number of years ago.

They constantly posted messages of support, encouragement and advice. They also relayed long range weather forecasts for whichever region Shannon was travelling through. Tired but happy, after a rest in Melbourne, Shannon will fly home to Picton to visit family and friends for a few days of rest and relaxation before flying back to Perth. Donations to the charities have exceeded his $10,000 target and Shannon and his fundraising team have decided to keep the donation website open till he returns to Perth. Shannons sister Ngaire has kept her promise to cut her hair and donate it to the WA Cancer Council wig service when the target of $10,000 was reached.

Jazz theme at Tempo This monthly Tempo Concert features the theme 'July Jazz'. Guest artists are the Marlborough Girls’ College Jazz Band, and the Marlborough Boys’ College Jazz Combo. Many younger and talented musicians will also perform. Tempo is all about giving young singers and musicians a non-judgmental platform to display their musical prowess and increase their musical and performance skills says spokesperson Linda Lloyd. “At the same time it's a great concert to come and support and see how much these young musicians grow in stature and skill. “ While the theme is Jazz, there will be performances of all kinds of music. “It is usually a real variety show with performers of all ages, abilities and performing on a variety of instruments,” Linda said.

Blenheim Police have been issued mobile devices to assist frontline staff with communication, identification checks and accessing information.

Marlborough frontline police have been issued smartphones and tablets to keep them out on the beat. The technology has been issued as part of a national roll-out which has been overseen by Marlborough’s incoming top cop, Inspector Simon Feltham, who is currently on leave. Tasman district police communications manager Barbara Dunn said the police had received plenty of training to get them up to speed. “They have face to face support via their local ‘champions,’ who have had their devices for the past eight weeks.” Police minister Anne Tolley said the new technology would allow police to spend more time patrolling streets rather than in the office. “The roll-out means police are

spending more time on the streets where we need them, and less time doing paperwork back in the stations.” Police said the new technology would allow frontline staff to access information, such as identification checks, without having to go through a communication centre or returning to the station. The new technology was widely used in Wellington’s recent stormy weather. Police say the cost of the devices is $4.3 million and the operating costs $159 million. All the devices have passwords and can be tracked and remotely locked or wiped if they should be lost or stolen. Inspector Feltham will take up his new position as Marlborough area commander on July 22.

“To establish a leading venue for sport, recreation, community events and conferences by providing excellent facilities, services, programmes and support to enhance the experience of the sports codes and the wider community.”

Picton celebrates opening day The Port Marlborough Pavilion’s opening day on Saturday July 6 will start with a public function at noon. Because of the weather expected, it will be held indoors with the noon Blessing and Powhiri led by Archdeacon Harvey Ruru of the Anglican Maori diocese of Te Waipounamu. Graham Gosling says you will have to be there to know who will have the honour of cutting the ribbon. Before that, there will be a few speeches, including words from Kaikoura MP Colin King and Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman. Graham Rose, sponsor for Picton’s Olympic gold rower Joseph Sullivan, who is overseas and cannot be present, will speak on Joseph’s behalf. Ian McNabb, CEO of Port Marlborough, will also say a few

words. Simple refreshments will follow. “Tea and coffee and something to eat,” says Graham. Although Waitohi Rugby Club will not be shifting to the site until the 2014 season, but will play opening day games, with the Crafar Crouch Waitohi seniors playing Pelorus at 12.50pm and the Crafar Crouch Waitohi Premier Side geared up to trounce Central at 2.35pm on this special day. There will be wall-to-wall soccer on the pitches from 8.30pm to noon, when the Picton Football Club’s junior players turn out for their round of matches. Picton Football Club spokesperson Kevin Mosdell said the Picton Seniors will turn out against Rangers United at 1pm and at 3pm, the Picton Development Team will play the Trojan Masters. The Port Marlborough Pavilion at Endeavour Park, ready for the opening ceremony on Saturday.

Naming rights to Port Marlborough A generous donation of $100,000 over five years has won Port Marlborough the naming rights for the former Endeavour Park Pavilion in Picton. The building will now be known as Port Marlborough Pavilion. Port Marlborough CEO Ian McNabb says the sponsorship has been selected as a major component of their programme of corporate giving because “the pavilion has the potential to touch everyone in the Picton community”.

Tribute to sponsors Picton’s Port Marlborough Pavilion has been made possible through the generosity of many sponsors. Graham Gosling says have been key contributions from Port Marlborough and New Zealand King Salmon. He makes special mention of the three developers who donated a section for sale in the nearby Endeavour Park subdivision: Keith Harrop, Keith Denham and Rodger Cloudsley. “And the Canterbury Community Trust was very generous.” Crafar Crouch and the Picton Lions Club also come in for special mention. There is also a very full list of firms and individuals who go on record as making the construction of this important community asset possible.

Proud to lend “To establish a leading venue for sport, recreation, our expertise in community events and conferences by providing excellent exterior plastering facilities, services, programmes and support to enhance the experience of the sports codes and the to wider community. the Endeavour” 2009 LTD - Blenheim

A thank you from the community The Port Marlborough Pavilion committee has worked tirelessly in the two years since being formed. The group, led by Graham Gosling and members Leigh McGlynn, Terry Beech, Cliff Bowers, Nigel Weetman, Chris Marshall, Shirley Timms and Virginia Taylor will celebrate the success of the first stage on Saturday in the knowledge that to complete stage 2 of the project, another major fundraising push will be required.

Many other volunteers have taken part in all sorts of capacities and the photographs on this page of Nigel Weetman and Cliff Bowers hard at work as opening day approaches are representative of the contribution of many members of the community. The pavilion stands as a tribute to the determination and persistence of all these people, and their willingness to work together on what is likely to be another two-year-long haul to Graham Gosling, chair of the Port achieve the completion of Stage 2. Marlborough Pavilion committee.

A month’s holiday... Nigel Weetman of Picton is one of the many volunteers who have worked on the Port Marlborough Stadium to bring it in on time and on budget. “I’m on a month’s holiday from work,” he said cheerfully this week as he wielded the paint roller. “So it’s worked out well.” Stadium project chairperson Graham Gosling has worked many hours on the project for the last two years. He looks at the completed building, needing only some additional furnishings and, asked his intentions, says: “I’m going to take a month’s holiday. There’s a lot of projects I need to do at home.” Then he and the rest of the committee will pick up the challenge of finding the next $1m for stage 2. That includes two squash courts, a gym and a large meeting room that can be divided into two to create conference break-out rooms. The aim is to establish the stadium as a centre for recreation , community events and conferences, as well as a sports venue. “We’ll be going all out to raise funds for the second stage,” said Graham . “There are ideas floating around that will be firmed up in the coming months.”

He added he was sure of public support once people had seen the facility for themselves. “The six changing

rooms are up to national standards for example.” Advertisements are calling for applications for the dual

King Salmon contributes Community projects often rely on partnerships with local companies. A New Zealand King Salmon company spokesperson says the fantastic new Port Marlborough Pavilion in Waikawa is no exception, where the organising committee successfully called in corporate support. NZ King Salmon’s generous contribution is recognised with the dedicated function room called the New Zealand King Salmon Room. Company managers recognised early on that the facility would be a great asset Mark Gillard, Environmental Compli- for Picton, and it would become a vibrant ance Manager with NZ King Salmon community hub.

New Zealand King Salmon env i r on m ent a l c ompl ia nc e m a n ager, Mark Gillard says the company is delighted with the pavilion. He said: “We wanted to get in behind the development of this dynamic community hub for Picton, and the building itself is even better than we imagined from the initial plans. Congratulations go to the organisers who had the vision and made it happen.” Local staff from New Zealand King Salmon will be joining the opening celebration on Saturday and offering complimentary tastings of Marlborough’s delicious King Salmon.

y t i u r f Go ing Why grow fruit and nut trees? There are heaps of reasons! As well as getting real satisfaction from producing your own food: • Your fruit will be fresh and delicious. • You'll save time and money on shopping for food. • You'll find it easier to eat healthy diet. • Your garden will look beautiful. • Your kids will learn first-hand where their food comes from. • Growing, watching and picking fruit is a fun family activity. Of course, you'll want all your efforts to 'bear fruit' and be a great success so here are some

tips on what to plant in different conditions. A sun-soaked site: Grapes, peaches, nectarines, cherries, plums, greengages, apples, figs, pears. A site with afternoon sun and exposure to rain-bearing winds: Apricots, gooseberries, cherries, blackberries, nectarines, peaches, grapes, greengages, raspberries, apples, red/ white currants. A site with morning sun, but dry and open to cold winds: Gooseberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, apples, currants, plums, early pears. A cold site: Cordon currants and gooseberries, early cooking apples, fan-trained damsons (that will ripen later) Growing fruit and nut trees has many benefits and involves the whole family.

Apple, Cranberry and Pear Crisp Ingredients: 2 Rome Beauty apples - peeled, cored, and cubed 2 Comice pears - peeled, cored, and cubed 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons honey 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup quick cooking oats 1/4 cup ground walnuts 1/2 cup butter

Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 C). Lightly grease an 8 inch baking dish. Mix the apples, pears, cranberries, 1 tablespoon flour, honey, and lemon juice in the prepared dish. In a bowl, mix 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, oats, walnuts, and butter to the consistency of coarse crumbs. Sprinkle loosely over the fruit mixture. Bake 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until brown and crisp on top. Recipe makes 8 servings

Unique product shows how it treats pain at Home & Garden Show this weekend. Inversion New Zealand was started nearly six years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option,” he said. While on one of these overseas trip seven years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that.” Dave never believed it would fix him, too many specialists had told him it was irreversible, he just knew he now had a place to go every time he wanted some relief. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free. “I couldn’t believe it, I had spent around $15,000 in ten years on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get relief from their pain and have seen results in not only backs, but hips, knees, necks, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. “We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children,” he said. “The blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent, what this means for the aging

Golden days for basketball

Win to Red Devils The Marlborough Red Devils played in Kaikoura on Wednesday, beating North Canterbury 31-24.

Blackadder negotiating Todd Blackadder is believed to be in negotiations to continue as Crusader's coach for the coming season, though this is yet to be confirmed.

Opening round of cycling Dave Hutchison won the Cuddon Cycling Marlborough's Vincent Shield at Renwick on Saturday afternoon. He was competing in the opening of Fairweathers Winter series. S.McDermid was second and G. Henderson third. It was a 28km handicap event up the Waihopai Valley and back for the junior under-17 grade as they competed for the Opening Day Cup. Brittany Lucas won by two minutes. Callum Caughey was second and Christopher Grammer third.

Hockey The annual Nelson-Marlborough hockey clashes were held at Saxton Fields in Stoke on Sunday. Ma rlborough men were thrashed in the McCarthy Cup with the scoreline 9-0 in the men's clash and the Nelson women took the Ken Beech Trophy with a 4-0 victory. However, Marlborough B took the Wyn Robinson trophy with their 4-0 victory in the team matches. The Malborough men's B team were, however, beaten 2-1 in the Russell Trophy encounter.

These are great days for New Zealand basketball. Last week we watched as beanpole Steven Adams became the first New Zealanders selected in the first round of the NBA draft which has opened the door for him to earn megabucks. What a wonderful start in life for a 19-year-old who nearly went off the rails while growing up in Rotorua but who now has become a role model. There’ll be a lot of kids up and down the country who would like to emulate him. Adams’ signing comes in the wake of the NZ Breakers winning three Australian Basketball League titles and basketball’s good times could keep rolling for some time to come. Certainly, basketball officials

will be pleased with statistics recently released by the NZ Secondary School Sports Council. They show that in 2012 there were 18,780 basketballers in the country at this level which places the sport fourth behind rugby (29,528), netball (26,364) and football (23,528). In rugby mad Canterbury, believe it or not, last year there were more secondary school kids playing basketball (2702) than rugby (2564). On other topic, what’s wrong with Ma’a Nonu? Two weeks ago we were cheering his great efforts for the All Blacks against the French and then in Dunedin, playing for the Highlanders last weekend against the Crusaders, he tip- tackled Crusader Tom Marshall in one

of those horrible smash tackles which leave you wondering whether the player could end up in a wheelchair. It was an action that had a degree of petulance about it. You sensed that Nonu felt miffed that he was sitting on the bench for the start of the match. Once on the field, the unfortunate Marshall copped Nonu’s frustration although Dan Carter had earlier been on the receiving end of some Nonu aggression when he was interfered with off the ball. Getting a red card is not a good look for a seasoned All Black; it’s forgivable if it’s a one-off but we’ve seen this sort of dirty play from Nonu in the past. If he employed this appalling approach at international level for

Chris Tobin

the All Blacks, there would be calls to drop him…… permanently. Anyone keen to place a bet on the Crusaders beating the Chiefs in Christchurch tonight? I hate predicting matches and I know the Chiefs have knocked over the Crusaders three times in their last four encounters – the last two in Hamilton. Yet, I’ll stick my neck out and say the Crusaders should win. They’re playing at home and they appear to be on a roll.

Big challenge for college first XV By Chris Tobin Marlborough Boys’ College faces possibly its toughest match of the season when the first XV plays St Bede’s College in Christchurch tomorrow. St Bede’s has been the stand-out team this year in the inter-secondary school Press Cup rugby competiton and has recorded some big victories which included a 71-3 thrashing of Roncalli College in Timaru last weekend. Marborough Boys’ has recorded some good results this season and had a noteworthy win last weekend also when they managed just their second success over Christchurch Boys’ High School with a 20-12 victory in Blenheim. No 8 Sekope Lopete managed two tries for Marlborough on that occasion while TC Campbell claimed the other. The win took Marlborough into second position behind St Bede’s in the competition and so tomorrow’s match will be of wide interest. MBC coach Gray Cornelius said he was pleased with the win over Christchurch Boys’ and the defensive effort of the team. They also showed commitment at ruck time but he was still looking for improvement. “It will need to be stepped up another gear on Saturday against St Bede’s as they will be tougher. “We will need to refocus and work on finishing opportunities in the opposition’s 22.” In their last outing against Christchurch Boys’, St Previous Marlborough Boys College players looking to gain possession Bede’s won 17-10.
