Rockquest winners

Local three piece alt-rock band Arm the Reckless had their hard earned efforts pay off when they took the honours in the Marlborough Smokefreerockquest at the Convention Centre on Saturday night. Arm the Reckless also won the Skinny Mobile Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choice Award voted by text at the event. Band members Mitch Alderlieste (lead guitar and vocals), Liam Hardman (bass) and Hayden Batt (drums) have only been together for three months but had made it their goal to win. Continued page 3

Story by Glenise Dreaver Graeme Barsanti has had long service on the council, being elected in 1989 when the council was formed in its current unitary structure. In his words, he has “a wealth of knowledge” about the area he serves. In 1989 he was the policeman stationed at Havelock where he still lives, and he says: “The late Pat Hammond and the late Toot Morrison persuaded me that I was well known in the area, that people knew me and I was a good community man.” He believes that is still true. He says he has been fighting for the infrastructure of Marlborough for years, as well as for individual people who need help in understanding the working of council. “That has been a big part of my role.” Working as a team member is vital he says - and with staff who have the memory of why decisions were made. “To understand, to move forward is my aim.” He is one of three Marlborough Sounds Ward councillors, where the three work as a team and “his” area covers communities in the Havelock, Pelorus sound, French Pass and D’Urville island areas. The other two cover Picton and Queen

Charlotte Sounds. He says, however, that while you work for your area, you can’t win all the time. “You just accept that and try again.” He plans to do that on the admittedly expensive issue of roading in the Kenepuru and French Pass areas. “It’s absolutely vital, but some councillors are against it.” Such battles don’t stop him believing that this council is very effective and he likes the way it works. He takes particular issue with fellow councillor Jessica’s Bagge’s comment in the Sun last Friday that decisions can be made in back rooms after meetings . “Just rubbish. You go in to relax after a council meeting and you might discuss issues, but it does not go beyond that point.” It is fair enough, he says that new councillors ask questions. “But first of all you listen and learn. Then ask. “It takes two to three years to master the workings of legislation from example. You can’t do it in five minutes.” Graeme’s worked with another contentious new councillor Jamie Arbuckle on resource consents and is admiring of the way he has changed and grown since the Sheard hearing and subsequent report. “He thinks. Watson’s application declined Leads to flasher Justice Minister Judith Collins yesterday announced the Governor-General has declined Scott Watson’s application for the Royal prerogative of mercy. “After thorough consideration of all the relevant material, I advised the GovernorGeneral that Mr Watson’s application be declined,” Ms Collins said. Assault victim undergoes surgery

Police continue to seek suspects Story by Celeste Lodewyk Police have made one arrest in relation to the assault on an 18-year-old on the Taylor River Bank on June 28, but are still appealing to the group of young people who witnessed the incident to come forward. Sarah Hughes, the mother of the victim went public last week in an effort to find those who were responsible for the attack which left her son with serious facial injuries requiring surgery. Speaking to the Sun yesterday after arriving home from Hutt Hospital, Sarah said her son was treated for fractures and nerve damage after being punched and kicked about the head while on the ground.

“We discovered that his cheek bone was severely broken which required surgery, and the nerve damage to his face we have been told should not be permanent,” she said. A Gillies technique was carried out which involved surgeons making an incision behind the hairline above the ear to push a steel rod across to the cheek bone to push the bones back into place. Fortunately surgeons did not have to place a plate or screws and his eye socket has been left to heal naturally, Sarah said. But there will be a recovery period requiring her son to eat soft food and stay elevated for three weeks. Sarah and her son were contacted by Victim Support who they gave impact statements to, and

Sarah has passed on information to the Police uncovered from her inquiries. “Through my social media appeals and people who have contacted me I have passed on the names of five people from the group as well as contacts for two of them. “I just want these people to come forward and own up to what they have done. I know who they are and their details are with the Police but it’s just a matter of waiting now,” she said. A Police spokesperson told the Sun yesterday that further inquiries are being carried out and Police still want to speak to the several members of the group who witnessed the incident as soon as possible.

On Monday July 8, at 12.45 pm, there was an accident on State Highway I at Redwood Pass when a ute and a car collided. Two ambulances attended and four patients were treated. Three ocupants, including a 10-month-old baby admitted to Wairau for observation, were taken to hospital. The other two were a 26-year-old woman and a 63-yearold man, the woman with minor chest injuries and the man with neck and shoulder injuries, also minor.

The accident, which occurred on a farm in Raupara Road about 10.30am, left the man with serious abdominal and pelvic injuries. Thousands of books sold for charity Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Thousands of pre-loved books were sold at the weekend when the Cancer Society Marlborough held its Midwinter Book Sale fundraiser at the McKendry Motors Showroom. Despite the wet weather, people of all ages, including young children visited the sale. They walked away with armloads and even large boxes of books at bargain prices. Organiser Margaret Tepania said she was overwhelmed with the generosity of donated books from the community and was thrilled with the amount of money raised. "We are still counting but the total will be around $6000 which is fantastic and we are so happy with the success of the book sale," she said. Money raised will go toward the services of the Cancer Society for the people of Marlborough. This is the second year that this sale has been run, and all left over books will be donated to the Blenheim Lions Club who will hold their own book sale later in the year. The next fundraising event for the Cancer Fox Bilsborough (2) peeps out from behind purchases at the Cancer Society's fundraising book sale at the Society is Daffodil Day on August 30. weekend. Free parking trial By Nikki Papatsoumas Free car parking will be introduced at the Wynen Street car (below) park on Thursdays. The parking is being trialed in a bid to encourage more people to shop in the central business district. Marlborough District Councillor Terry Sloan and a group of business owners are behind the idea, which is modelled off an initiative that took place in Nelson. Mr Sloan says he hopes the free car parking will

work as an incentive to get more people into the CBD. “We have got to try something. It’s a pretty tough time and whatever we can try and do to help businesses in the CBD is a good thing.” He says Thursday was chosen, because it is the day that the council takes in the least revenue from car parking. The free car parking will be trialed until the end of August, and will begin this week.

The end of the beginning Photo and story by Glenise Dreaver On Saturday, Picton celebrated the successful end of stage one of the new Port Marlborough Pavilion. There was also a very real sense that the celebrations were just the end of the beginning. The opening at noon drew well over 100 guests, who braved gales and heavy rain to make their way to the building. Fortunately, just before Archdeacon Harvey Ruru blessed the pavilion and those who would use it now and in the future, the wind and rain stopped. Rita Powick presented the karanga, the welcome call, and Archdeacon Ruru then led those present on a circuit of the spacious, light-filled new hall. It was the end of a two-year odyssey for the organising committee, led by Graham Gosling. Those two years of hard work on the

community multi-purpose facility were acknowledged by all the speakers, including Kaikoura MP Colin King and Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman. But even as they celebrated, the committee members were already looking forward to raising their next million for Stage 2. That will include a gym, squash courts and a conference room that can be divided into two for break out rooms. Graham Gosling recognised the future generations who will use the complex when he invited youngsters to take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony. Bunty Bunt, above, in his nineties and a former Spitfire and Hurricane pilot with a lifetime record of community service and leadership, cut the ribbon. He was supported by seven proud youngsters, representatives of their schools and sporting codes who will be the next generation to benefit.

Associate Health Minister Todd McClay says he is counting down the days until a new law provides New Zealanders with greater protection from so-called "legal highs". The Psychoactive Substances Bill is expected to pass its third and final reading on Thursday this week. It means the drugs must be immediately removed from dairies and non-specialist shops. There will also be strict prohibitions on the sale to, possession and consumption by under 18-year-olds. "The sooner this dangerous muck is out of our dairies and corner stores the better,” said Mr McClay. He said that communities had increasingly been successful in having products removed from local shelves. “The Psychoactive Substances Bill will back local communities by giving new powers to councils to further restrict the sale and availability of 'legal highs'.”

Compliance Dear Ed, In view of the current situation with the CCC and the goverment's international accreditation agency for building consents etc ( IAC), you might be interested to look at IAC's web site (Ministry of BIE) latest technical review report dated May 20 2013 concerning the MDC's level of compliance. In particular the various examples given of non-compliance and in particular the lack of compliance

of the emergency egress lighting of a primary school in Marlborough (example 6 from memory, not named, but I know of it or one other). I find it incredible that, as I understand it, compliance personnel have been seconded from MDC to CCC. The report, particularly the conclusions and recommendations makes interesting bed-time reading, unless you are contemplating building in Marlborough. C Smith

Ignorant cyclists Dear Ed, I was walking along Queen Charlotte Drive yesterday when two male cyclists passed me riding side by side. I expressed my concern of how dangerous that was and they thought that was highly amusing. On their way back the middle cyclist was on the centre line. Sadly it probably would not be them killed but the driver or child in the car swerving to avoid them. I found their attitude not only ignorant but arrogant, foolish and very very pompous. They are grown men acting like teenagers not thinking of the consequences. I hope they read this and start thinking of others and not just themselves. Denise Elliott

Jesus Christ Superstar Con is now in the final stages of rehearsals for the combined colleges’ production of Jesus Christ Superstar. He has been guiding the chorus and principals through the score, a bigger task than usual because the show is completely sung. This is, he says, going to be an outstanding production and people should book their tickets now. The show opens at the Marlborough Civic Theatre on Tuesday August 6 and runs through to Saturday August 10 with a matinee on the Saturday afternoon.

A fresh new look on Main Street

Colour forecast for 2013 The 2013 colour forecast as predicted by Dulux, one of Guthrie Bowron's leading brands has directed colour consultants toward "the dusty pastels of Impressionist paintings, quirky tones inspired by the Fifties and a touch of fluro bright". According to the forecast there's a move towards colour layering at home, including different shades of pastels across the walls of one room or bold orange and pinks sitting side by side on furniture. A trend to look out for this year is the move towards using small flashes of colour rather than painting the entire space. The forecast for 2013 draws on the themes of “movement”, “social change”, “people power”, and the march of the digital age. Awareness Week 2013 July 15 - 22

Supporting the women who need us “Give her voice and help her be heard”. This is the catch-cry of the Women’s Refuge July 2013 campaign. July is the Women’s Refuge Awareness and Appeal month and it is the hope that the community can be educated about domestic violence while fundraising to supports the refuges operating costs. Marlborough Women’s Refuge manager Rachel Black said they were only around 62 percent government funded, so in order to continue its operations grants and donations were crucial. “The community has showed amazing support to us by donating household

goods and clothing which we really appreciate, and we are hoping that this year’s Appeal will be a success,” she said. Demand on the Marlborough Women’s Refuge has increased, particularly in the past three months Rachel said. “It has been really busy due to an increase in family violence. There are a lot of contributing factors including the economy. “It’s not just abuse, there is a lot of financial hardship where families are finding it difficult putting food on the table and paying bills which add to the stress and tension.

“These are no excuse for violence but they certainly don’t help,” she said. Violence is never your fault – it’s the abuser’s There are many common myths about domestic violence – such as ‘Why doesn’t she just leave?’ – but female and child victims don’t ‘ask for it’, and no one deserves to be abused. The responsibility for both the abuse and the personal changes needed to stop the behaviour lies firmly with the abuser. Domestic violence is about a systematic pattern of coercive control punctuated by physical, sexual, emotional or financial violence that leaves the victim intimidated, hurt and fearful for her life, and the lives of her family. Domestic violence is not limited to any demographic. It happens in rural and urban areas, within all age, religious and ethnic groups, and across all socio-economic groups. It can happen between people who are married, in de facto relationships or just dating. Domestic violence happens in same sex relationships, too. The Domestic Violence Act 1995 legally protects anyone in a domestic relationship from violence: married couples; unmarried couples; gay and lesbian couples; children; family; anyone in a close relationship; and flatmates and others who may share accommodation from violence. There are other relevant laws also in place to protect your rights.

Uzbekistan, here I come By Emily Elliott Spending six weeks in Europe and Asia to raise money for charity will be the adventure of a lifetime for a local biker. Twenty-six year old Jim Millard left for the United Kingdom on Saturday, where he will begin his 16,000km charity ride through countries such as France, Germany, Russia, Slovakia, Poland, Uzbekistan and Kazikstan this weekend. Jim has been preparing for the ride, named the Mongol Rally, for ten months. He will be completing it on a postie bike with his friend from Germany, Markus Schell. "It's the challenge of taking it. It's a long course, and motorbikes have to be under 125cc. "They give you a start point and a finish point and you chose where to go." Jim and Markus are hoping to complete the ride in six weeks, but will be playing the majority of the trip by ear.

Kindergarten shares art discoveries through exhibition The children at Renwick Kindergarten have been exploring different ways of creating art. Their recent excursion to the Taylor Pass honey factory, then the Millennium art gallery, lead to children creating their own art in Seymour square. Drawing inspiration from the plants, they learnt how bees pollinate the flowers and plants, discovering the natural world they were able to make connections and represent their ideas within different art mediums. Back at Kindergarten, the art blocks were painted and finished. The Renwick Kindergarten decided to have its own exhibition so children could share their own art discoveries with parents/ Whanau and a gallery was set up within the kindergarten. The children used large card board and spray bottles to create splat paintings, learning about colour mixing and pattern making. This was a wonderful way to finish off the term and celebrate the children's exploration of bees and art. "There are no support vehciles. People have been seriously injured or died on Mongol rally." The bike he is riding will only have a top speed of 70km/h. Jim has been riding bikes since he was seven, and hasn't done much training leading up to the rally. "I'm just going to jump on and go. "It will probably be the biggest adventure I do," said Jim. Soccer cancelled

Picton Football Club had to cancel the planned fixtures on the Endeavour Park soccer grounds on Saturday. While the teams were all pumped and ready to go on their new turf, because of the waterlogged nature of the ground the matches had to be cancelled. The Waitohi Rugby Club was able to play on the other side of the stadium for its only game this year, but the soccer players needed to protect their new home ground for the rest of the season.

Marlborough Women’s Triathlon This year’s popular Women’s Triathlon, to be held on Sunday December 1, will be run by Mark Grammer, an international multisport athlete and Lance Spencer, who are partners in Marlborough Sport Development. They currently run the Cuddon Cycling junior programme and organised the Anakiwa Triathlon, the Michael Huntley Memorial Triathlon and the Marlborough Quadrathon earlier this year.

St Bede’s, leaders in the Press Cup, had not been beaten on their home ground in 61 matches going back to May 2007. However, they were pushed all the way by a never-saydie Ma rlborough team which had tipped over seven times Press Cup winners, Christchurch Boys’ High School in Blenheim the week before. Cheered on by a large contingent of Marlborough supporters who had travelled south for the match, MBC was level pegging with St Bede’s at halftime, 10-all. St Bede’s nudged ahead with a successful penalty but soon after Levi Brunton scored a fine try for MBC which put the visitors in the

lead for the first time, 15-13. The St Bede’s supporters went silent as a boilover looked possible but MBC’s propensity to give away penalties proved costly and St Bede’s kicker Jamayne Isaako was successful again with a penalty. However, a St Bede’s forward was yellowcarded not long after and it seemed MBC could take advantage of this situation. Instead, St Bede’s scored; with the try converted and the score was out to 23-15. However, MBC was not finished and Chad Ternent ran in a fine try which Abe Rood converted and it was now 23-22. This match was a special, played in honour of the Port Marlborough Pavilion opening. The Picton team will play their final home game back at the Waitohi grounds next weekend and may move to Endeavour Park in 2014. The sun came out for the occasion, though there had been heavy rain that left the ground waterlogged. Club president Robin Beattie said despite the condition of the grounds, the day was “brilliant”. “The whole day was just magic.” They would be continuing work with the council to improve remaining issues with drainage, he said.

There had already been a lot of drainage work done by the Council, he said. The last technique, sand splitting, had only been done on the main ground and that was “not too bad”.
