Off to Glasgow Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk “We are definitely going there to win, that’s our goal!” They are young, ambitious and about to embark on an incredible sporting opportunity, as Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski head to Glasgow to contest the UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships next month. Callum and Quinn were selected by BikeNZ to be part of a nine strong team for the Championship which runs from August 7 to 11. In the men’s sprint team they are joined by Jeremy Presbury (Invercargill) and Zac Williams (Auckland). The duo left Blenheim airport on Wednesday but prior to their departure they took the time to speak to the Sun about what it meant to be representing New Zealand at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome which will be used for next year’s Commonwealth Games. “No! I wouldn’t stand for Mayor!” says Marlborough Sounds Ward district councillor David Oddie when asked the direct question. He says it very firmly. “It’s not what I aspire to and would not be the best platform to represent my ward.” “I like the work in my ward. It’s a large and complex one with many small communities and townships. “Working with the communities to achieve their aspirations has been positive and rewarding for me.” “And it’s part of what is one of the best coastal waterways in the world. It’s special and it needs caring for.” However, the councillors’ governance role meant that there had to be balance, with many different points of view weighed to make decisions as to what was best for the whole area. It took some time for the first-time councillor to realise that if you wanted something achieved you had to take six others on the 13-person council with you. “If you can do that, there’s nothing you can’t achieve,” he said. He agrees there has been turmoil around some issues, with the building of the new theatre a divisive one that split the very new council by one vote in the early days. He was one of those opposing the idea, cautious of on-going running costs. “Not the capital expenditure. That’s always the easy part. “I’m concerned with burdening the future generation with on-going expenditure.” “However once the decision was made you need to accept that that is democracy. From there on I’ve been supportive of the build. If you don’t you’re being obstructive.

” If you are defeated on an issue you need to move on. There is too much to get on with to dwell on an issue,” he said. One of the nicest things about being a councillor was working with the truly dedicated staff he added. “They are very committed and passionate about their work. “A councillor’s role requires the best information to get the best decision and council staff work hard to give us that,” he said. Asked about the possible move of the ferries to Clifford Bay, David says the district, but especially Picton, would face some huge challenges. “How we face those challenges could define our district for several years.” An economic and social impact study needed to be done: “If we lose 100 families from Picton, what will the effect be on schools, police and other services?” Looking back, he says his first term on council has been positive and rewarding adding, however, that he was naive about the workload. “It’s become full time.” He was in a position to retire from business at a young age when he began though. “So time has not been a problem for me.” He recognises that for young people however, the level of work could be an issue. “They would need a very underMDC Councillor, David Oddie. standing partner.”

Off to Glasgow Continued from page 1 “There are definitely some nerves,” laughed Quinn. “This is the biggest event for us to date so there’s a mixture of excitement, anticipation and nerves but overall I can’t wait to get there,” he said. “The team is made up of all really great guys, we have made some close friends

within it and we all share a common goal - we want to win,” added Callum. Leading up to the Championship the team has had three training camps and will complete a final build-up overseas which will see them training most days in the new velodrome. Supporting Callum and Quinn will be over 20 supporters and officials including

family, management and coaches. According to proud father Sturrock Saunders this Championship will be a big moment for the boys and the pinnacle of their career to date. “Until they hit the elite field, this is big for them, and I know I will be cheering proudly in my kiwi colours,” he said.

These Queen Charlotte College students used the Port Marlborough pavilion’s opening day in Picton as a final fund-raising opportunity in the days before they left on a school trip to Europe this week. The 29 students and eight adults who are going had raised some $6000 each, and aimed for $1500 additional money to cover them for the month they will be away. The educational bus tour will include Croatia, Germany, and Austria Belgium, Slovenia, Italy and the Vatican City, though not Britain. Gift will save lives Blenheim Police Station now has a new defibrillator thanks to the generosity of the Blenheim South Rotary Club. Mike Parkinson of Rotary presented the $3000 life-saving device to Sergeant Mark Kirkwood of the Blenheim Police on Monday. Triple One Care manager Nine Scott, who is responsible for the training of

police at the station, was also there for the handover. Sergeant Kirkwood said that it was a far more effective way of saving lives than CPR and the machine could make a huge difference in survival statistics. It can be used in cases of cardiac arrest, alcohol poisoning, drug overdoses and head injuries.

They get very engaged.” The term’s work required them to undertake activities such as writing a CV, applying for positions including those of CEO and accountant, designing currencies, creating a business plan and selecting, creating and selling their product. The “profits” were spent yesterday on such treats as renting computer time, buying healthy sandwiches and Mike Parkinson of Blenheim South Rotary presents the defibrillator to Sergeant Mark Kirkwood. other rewards.

Vital life skills learnt

There were enthusiastic marketers leaping from behind market `stalls to sell their wares to any passing visitors as Blenheim School held its annual Market Day on Tuesday July 9. The children had set up the stalls to sell the creations they had made since they started their business module at the start of the term. Principal Dina Ahradsen said creating the little businesses was a very popular activity for the children.

Josh McKay serves the final coffees from his coffee cart today as he leaves the Blenheim CBD to pursue an exciting new career direction. Josh will still operate the coffee cart but only for business functions and events. He leaves the full time life of a barista behind as he ventures into the education sector, training toward a Bachelor of Teaching for Early Childhood Education. "I have always enjoyed working with preschool aged children, especially having two young boys aged five months and three years. "It's sad leaving but I have appreciated the support from my regular customers," he said.

the statutory requirements for new initiatives, some had to go from department to department. Now they are guided through the processes. “We try to ensure that there are no surprises,” said Neil, adding that there had been 22 enquiries since they set up the programme in July last year. Some were big developments, some small, with some starting up and some expanding, but all were helped to understand the problems there could be at the start – environmental effects, noise, or discharge or smell issues, or parking. For some the result has been a decision not to go ahead, some are still in training but three major successes have included the $11m Babich winery development. That might have happened anyway, but the support meant it was quicker through the systems he said. Another was the Te Rere Karearea Art Gallery in the Wairau Valley. The third, he said, was NZ Underia Ltd, a project which used seaweed to develop creams and lotions with health giving benefits. There had been links made to the Marlborough Research Centre and the Riddet Institute. “What it is doing is getting businesses talking about their plans.” Anyone interested could contact smartbusiness@ marlborough.govt.nz or call 03 5207557 for more information he said.

Theatre good for marl In response to k.o Lawrence with regards to a new theatre. The theatre we have at the moment brings people and money to Marlborough so how can you justify it being a waste of money. It includes parts for people who want to act and take part in shows, either for experience or the passion, people pay a lot for some of the shows. It brings acts and viewers which we wouldn’t usually get without the theatre and if we increase the limitations it has, it will only increase on the money that is brought into Marlborough!

Dingo Injustice Dear Ed, You have got to wonder at the hysteria accompanying the calls for Robbie Deans head after the Wallabies lost 2-1 to the Lions. You also have to wonder at the dubious intelligence of the media baying like a bunch of crazy bloodhounds. The Wallabies might have won the first test had Kurtley Beale not slipped when attempting a last minute, potentially easy match winning kick. Arguably the the Wallabies would have won the series 2-1. A tad of analysing shows the series

was decided on a mere couple of points out of a rough total of over 130 points scored. Compare the hounding of Robbie Deans to the All Blacks winning the World Cup where a single point was the winning or losing. From that one point came insincere bragging made bizarre by the ludicrous knighting of Graham Henry. Had the French won as arguably they deserved to, Henry would have been a plonker instead of a national hero. People, especially the media, can be very, very weird. Tony Orman

Make sure you include your child’s name, address, phone number and age. Age groups are 8 years and under, and 9 years to 12 years. There will be prizes in each age group.

The rise and rise of Warren Gatland

Marlborough Women’s Triathlon This year’s popular Women’s Triathlon, to be held on Sunday December 1, will be run by Mark Grammer, an international multisport athlete and Lance Spencer, who are partners in Marlborough Sport Development.

MBC game schedule The NZ King Salmon MBC 1st XV is to play Naenae College in Blenheim on July 20 for a ‘friendly’ match. The next Press Cup competition match is in Christchurch against Christ’s College on July 27, not this weekend as stated in the Sun on Wednesday. We regret the error.

Warren Gatland a future All Blacks coach? That has to be a possibility when it comes time for the present incumbent, Steve Hansen, to vacate the hot seat. With the Lions’ crushing 4116 win over the Wallabies at the weekend the former Waikato prop proved his chops. Prior to that crucial final test a storm of vitriol erupted, especially via social media, when Gatland dropped Irish legend Brian O’Driscoll from the midfield and brought in Jamie Roberts. That meant 10 boyos from the valleys in the Lions starting line-up. Enough for a Welsh choir. It is debatable whether the Lions gained anything playing-wise with Roberts’ inclusion. Psychologically speaking, however, for the 10

Welshmen it was an unspoken statement from Gatland: ‘My faith is in you to do the job.’ And, with Alex Corbisiero (an Englishman) a powerhouse in the front row, they did. Spectacularly. So Gatland’s star is in the ascendant while Robbie Deans, coach of the wobbly Wallabies, has been dumped up a dirt track with a suitcase and a bus ticket going nowhere. The lofty heights of his glory days with the Crusaders are long past. The former All Blacks assistant coach is out of a job; temporarily, no doubt, but where to now? I always believed after Graham Henry’s All Blacks team bombed out in the quarterfinal of the 2007 World Cup against France that Deans deserved his chance as head coach of the All Blacks. “Give me another four years,”

Ted pleaded. And the New Zealand Rugby Union agreed. Ted got his four years and a campaign that ended with the All Blacks scoring a squeak win over France in the World Cup final nearly two years ago. And Ted received a knighthood. In that same period virtually the only thing Deans acquired was a new nickname, Dingo. Compared to his early coaching years his Wallaby stint brought ashes and dust, and horror of horrors, defeats even to Samoa and Scotland. It’s hindsight now but going over the ditch to coach our bitter rival mates, Australia, was not a wise move by Deans, certainly if he harboured the desire to one day achieve what must be the pinnacle for any New Zealand coach – to be at the helm of the All Blacks.

Chris Tobin

Had Deans gone to the northern hemisphere, rather than Australia, one of the Home Nations would have gladly snapped him up. ‘Dingo’ Deans becoming the All Blacks’ head coach now looks unlikely, perhaps impossible. Not for Gatland. He seems to be walking in the footsteps of Sir Ted. And he has already gone one step further than Henry. He has taken the Lions to a series win over Australia.

Feats of strength Last Saturday saw many feats of strength not normally found in carparks as Snap Fitness Gym ran a Health Expo to mark its first birthday. Michael Washington (“Washy”) took out the Strongman title and Tracey Nicholl was the Strongwoman on the day. The formidable list of tasks included flipping a huge tyre the length of the carpark and back, then pushing a sled down the course and pulling it back on the end of a rope. (The pulling proved hardest of all.) Finally, contestants did the “wobbly

bar” section, with different weights on each end. Another contest was held on the rowing machine. Winner of the women’s section was Kelly Wilson, while Liam Falkner won the men’s section. The day was a huge success said Snap Fitness assistant manager Julian Claasen-Kemple. “It wasn’t just about us.” They had brought in many health professionals with all sorts of information about health and fitness generally he said.

Swimming meet at new pool This weekend, Friday and Saturday July 12-13, over 150 secondary school aged swimmers will gather in Blenheim for the first big meet to be held in the new Blenheim pool. It is the first time for many years that the area has been able to host a major meet. The Secondary School South Island Championships will see 13 young swimmers from Marlborough colleges compete against nearly 40 colleges from around the South Island. Swimmers will compete in a variety of swimming events, in two age groups, 14 and under and 15 years and over in what will be a great warm up for the New Zealand South Island Championships which will be held in late August. The public can watch the races at no cost to support the Marlborough teams.

Reassurance on gangs Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says he has been advised by the Police that Mongrel Mob presence in this region is not increasing and that the Police are maintaining close scrutiny of those who are here. Mr Sowman spent more than an hour with acting Area Commander Senior Sergeant Allyson Ealam on Wednesday morning discussing the level of gang activity and the police strategy to deal with it. “We know who they are and we know where they are. Their numbers are small and stable. We monitor their movements.”

Senior Sergeant Allyson Ealam Wearing a patch in itself is not an offence but any behaviour that intimidates or threatens should be

reported to us immediately and we will respond,” said Senior Sergeant Ealam. She undertook to follow up several matters which Mr Sowman relayed from community members who had approached him with specific concerns. She also said the community should see an increase in police visibility with the recent issue of iPads and smartphones to staff, enabling them to be more mobile. After the meeting, Mr Sowman said he had been assured there had been no change to the local police policy on gangs adopted by former

Muster of Maseratis on Maxwell

Yealands Winery recently raised $254 for Awatere Playcentre in a raffle for a sculpture 'Metal Fantasy'. It was created by Aaron Black, their talented and creative Yealands staff member. “As a non-profit community based provider of Early Childhood

education we would really like to acknowledge Yealand's generosity in supporting us," said the Playcentre's secretary, Mel Ewart. Last Thursday, Frankie Hall, at left, presented Awatere Playcentre Treasurer Shelley Avery and son Quinn Avery with the cheque. Story and photo provided.

The owners of the four (slightly mud-weary) Maseratis parked in Maxwell Road on Thursday afternoon remained anonymous as we went to press. Your intrepid Sun reporter failed in her mission to track the obviously seriously rich owners of the powerful beasts.

Area Commander Steve Caldwell. “Senior Sergeant Ealam told me the foot had not come off the pedal and I am pleased to know that. There is no place for gangs in our town. “I acknowledge that social conditions can enable gangs to recruit members and I understand why some individuals want to join. But this is not a gang town and I don’t want to see that change,” said Mr Sowman. Police say that seasonal work was the reason that some gang members had moved to Marlborough. Mr Sowman said it was vital

that local vineyard contractors understood and observed their responsibilities as good employers. “Do they security check them? Do they ensure accommodation is appropriate? We all share a responsibility for keeping this town safe,” said the Mayor. Mr Sowman said he would be seeking an early meeting with the new Marlborough police commander once he’d started in the role because he wanted to ensure there would be no change to the proactive policing of gangs.
