6.5 quake hits

Region shakes, nerves rattled... Mayor Alistair Sowman took the opportunity to send a strong message about Clifford Bay to the Government on the nationwide Breakfast programme yesterday. Alistair and the presenter Rawdon Christie discussed the issue, which was obvious as they looked at the map of the quakes. “I hope the government is taking where they have occurred into account,” he told the Sun yesterday. Clifford Bay is in close proximity to the faultline and that’s an issue that they haven’t raised to date.” “There is constant seismic activity there.”

The intensity was frightening and I couldn’t stop shaking for a half hour from the shock. I slept fully clothed on the lazyboy ready to leave. I am prepared at home and bought more water containers.

I was home in Tua Marina when the house started shaking up and down. I ducked under the bench, the power and internet connection went out. My nerves are ok, I’m not worried about anything below 5.8.

Earthquake markers are approximate based on data. Minimum recorded here is 4.0 magnitude.

“I’m a recycled councillor!” says David Dew, who spent 18 years on the Marlborough District Council from 1989 to 2004. “I just needed a break,” he said. Now he’s back, following concerns about projected MDC debt levels in the 2009–19 ten-year plan and consequent high rate increases. “I felt motivated. I thought, ‘I can’t stay on the sidelines here’.” He’s standing again too, saying: ”I’m full of new ideas.” Last time, David campaigned on a nil rate increase. Only two other councillors had supported that stance. “Geoff Evans and Jamie Arbuckle.” Councillors didn’t pull back as much as he would have liked but “we’ve got more people on board”. It was a challenge to convince people, not alienate them he said. In the event the rates rise was

3.19 per cent less than the projected 7 per cent. Projected debt levels had dropped dramatically from three years ago he said. “The luxuries have been cut and it’s essentials only now.” “It’s a team game there. You can get the best headlines in New Zealand, but without a team approach you’re completely ineffectual.” Other challenges have also surfaced and David has damning condemnation of the government’s handling of the Clifford Bay ferry relocation saga. “It’s blighting the community in Picton. The delays are a disgrace. It can’t work on the economics. Any sensible government isn’t going to throw all that money into a hole.” However, the challenge for Picton was not actually Clifford Bay, he said. “It’s how can we encourage the rejuvenation of

Picton once the truth comes out.” Another big challenge for the new council is going to be to get the CBD running. “Council is now in a position to be a lot more positive going forward. “We have to convince people it’s less about shopping and more about entertainment.” Of the possible new council, he says: “New blood is always useful if it brings new, smart ideas.” To do it well, age and gender didn’t matter he said. “It’s about your ability. You can get people of 25 with none and people of 70 who are outstanding.” “It’s a hell of a hard job though. If you are in the engine room working, there is a lot of reading and time commitment.” “Alistair has been a good Mayor to work with and I have appreciated how he presents Council to the public,” Sitting MDC Councillor David Dew. he said.

6.5 quake “Hopefully the biggest..” The severe magnitude 6.5 earthqua ke, which str uck Seddon, Marlborough and Wellington on Sunday evening at 5.09pm, will, say scientists, hopefully be the biggest. GeoNet said it was centred in Cook Strait, 20 kilometres east of Seddon at a depth of 17 kilometres. Phone lines jammed in Marlborough and the central North Island immediately after as people tried to call family and friends, a Telecom spokeswoman said. Both the mobile network and the landline network were overloaded for

20 minutes. There have been constant aftershocks since the first quake - 4.2 - struck at 7.04am. It was 10k deep, centred 35km east of Seddon. It was followed 13 minutes later by the 5.7 shake that was centred 30km east of Seddon at a depth of 19km and then at 7.20am by a 4.3 shake at a depth of 14km and 25km east of Seddon, while a fourth - 4.3 - rattled the region from a depth of 22km at 7.30am. Sunday’s nights 6.5 saw several stores and supermarkets with minor

damage and they were closed while shelves were re-stocked. The worst affected was the SuperValue store in Seddon which was closed Monday morning while safety checks were completed and damage cleaned up. New World in Blenheim reported Sunday night’s earthquake caused some minor damage to stock from small amounts of products falling from shelves. The store was closed for a short time to clean up and do building checks said Katherine Klouwens, Group Communications Manager,

Foodstuffs New Zealand. PAKnSAVE in Blenheim was unaffected by Sunday nights 6.5 earthquake. Most trading banks in Blenheim were closed on Monday while their buildings were checked by engineers for damage. Soon after Sunday nights magnitude 6.5 earthquake, people were congregating on the road sides outside their homes, while other people were filling their cars up with petrol and trying to shop at the supermarkets for essentials.

“The main issue is people,” says Mayor By Glenise Dreaver. Photo by Les Whiteside. Mayor Alistair Sowman, who has visited Seddon and seen the results of the recent earthquakes first hand, says the damage was not comparable to the Christchurch disasters. “Nothing collapsed.” However, while there were some relatively small issues with plumbing and single brick buildings with no reinforcing, the main issue was, he said, the effect of the constant shaking on people, especially those in Seddon. “That’s the major story out there. These people are getting no sleep. There are frayed nerves and cranky children and they’ve had enough.” Many were not, he said in close proximity to neighbours. “But they are meeting to chat at the supermarket.” Council staff had come in on Sunday evening to keep phone lines open. “And the Mayor was bugging them.” He had been at the first day of the Local Government New Zealand conference. They felt the big quake, but it took a few minutes to find out it was centred in his area. Getting home that day proved impos- Barb Winstanley helps clean up iHair next to Farmers on Market Street on sible, with Hamilton airport fogbound. Monday.

Porse Building The Porse building in Market Street North was yesterday cleared for occupation following a report by a structural engineer from Christchurch. Owners TH Barnes had been told to commission the report following concerns from MDC about possible structural issues

with it, especially the stairways. That had been a problem in the CTV building which had been designed, though not built, by the same firm. Mr Smithies said work on strengthening the building was to start in the near future. “That was always the plan anyway.”

Prince William and wife Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed the birth of their first child, a boy born Monday 4:24pm (3:24am today NZT) weighing a healthy 8lb 6oz. The name had not been announced at time of printing.

Strong building code The Marlborough District Council reports that there has been little or no damage to homes, commercial properties or public buildings. “There would have to be questions asked if there were,” says Mayor Alistair Sowman, adding that the level of the building standards here were considerably higher than those in Christchurch. “We are in a different seismic zone.” The Blenheim Library, the Millennium Art Gallery and the Stadium and Aquatic Centre have been checked by Council building inspectors and structural engineers. Ceiling tiles have fallen down in some commercial buildings in Blenheim and the Awatere Memorial Hall in Seddon. There were no

structural problems with these buildings however. While power had gone out in Seddon, Rarangi and Tua Marina and it took until Monday morning for all Seddon properties to be reconnected, other areas had power restored by 8.15pm on Sunday. There were minor slips on a number of roads such as State Highway 1, south of Seddon, the Port Underwood Road and State Highway 6 in the Whangamoas. Bridges on the roading network have been cleared and all roads are open. Mr Sowman said home owners were being encouraged to contact their insurance companies as soon as possible if they had suffered damage.

Obituary

Betty Woodham QSM March 18 1933 - July 15 2013 Betty Woodham was born to be a sportswoman. A member of the large Saul family which has a fine record in sport in Marlborough at all levels, she quickly distinguished herself both as a competitive swimmer and a talented netballer. A passion for and ability in the game saw her progress to representative status in the Marlborough team at only 16 years of age. That was the start of 65 years of dedication to the sport as a player, a player coach then coach at both club and provincial level. Betty was also a committee member, vice president and president as well as having been secretary

treasurer for Marlborough Netball. She became a life member and a patron of the organisation. She also played for College Old Girls and founded the United Club as a social group that soon progressed to club status. In 1990, sesquicentennial year, she was awarded The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal, while the QSM for 40 years service to Marlborough netball came in 1994. Betty also received a Netball New Zealand Service Award in 2001. She achieved what she did with grace and trademark humour, enjoying socialising and she had a flair for ideas for fun events. (One of her greatgrandchildren wore Betty’s Dame Edna Everage glasses to her funeral as an unmistakeable tribute to her sense of humour.) Betty had strong administrative skills which were used to support husband Keith in their building business Woodham and Morris. For twenty years she was secretary of the Marlborough Horticultural

Society, and was also treasurer and president, being awarded life membership. She always enjoyed art and craft, later in life becoming very passionate about the art of china painting. One of the many netballers who knew her paid her this tribute: “Marlborough Netball was all the richer for the endless work she put in over many years. Her cheery smile and her red jacket will be missed on the sidelines.” Betty and Keith had three children, Shirley Hocquard, Helen Woodham-Enosa and the late Kevin. There are six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, all of whom mourn the passing of a great lady.

Pig hunt ‘rip roaring success’ Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk. Bigger and better than ever were the words used by organisers to promote this year's HOB Boar Slaying Super Comp, and they weren't wrong! With a new venue, more emphasis on family entertainment and more prizes, Sunday's midwinter festival and hunting competition were an "outstanding success". Organisers Matt and Lisa Willis hosted the competition and festival at the Giesen Sports & Events Centre on Sunday which was attended by hundreds of hunting enthusiasts, families and general public. The pig carrying competition proved a hit with the crowd with men and women racing around an obstacle course competing for a cash prize. Even Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk had a go, and for her first time ever touching a pig she did well winning her heat. There were 99 boars weighed in and an incredible 493 entries, keeping the title of New Zealand's largest pig hunt firmly in Marlborough. "We were thrilled with how well the day went and it was great to see entries coming in from as far away as Invercargill. "Feedback received on the day showed that people who weren't hunters still enjoyed themselves as there was plenty to see and do for all ages. "We thank all our friends and family, helpers and especially our sponsors who helped to make this day a success," said Lisa.

The major spot prize in the Open Division of a Hilux 3L double cab fitted with a Silverline Alloy dog box was won by Ed McDonell of Pahi in the North Island who was on his feet cheering triumphantly when his name was called out. "On the way here me and my mates were all joking about who was going to drive the new hilux home, and when my name was called out I couldn't believe it," Ed told the Sun. The heaviest boar was caught by Hokitika hunter Daniel Fortune weighing in at 87.8kg. Each year Daniel and his children enter the competition so this year's win was a big event for the family. The second heaviest boar was caught by former Blenheim man Dave Neal weighing 77kg. Dave was last year's winner when he entered in his 102.5kg 'monster'. Competition Results:

Seal and seal pup shot in head The Department of Conservation is condemning the shooting of two seals at Ohau Point seal colony on the Kaikoura coast and is asking for help to find who is responsible. A female seal, and a pup thought to be about 11 months old, were found with gunshot wounds to their heads on Saturday July 20. The dead seals were about 50 metres apart and it is not known if the female was the pup’s mother. DOC South Marlborough area manager David Hayes said the two seals appeared to have been shot at close range between late Friday afternoon and around midday Saturday. “It is deeply disappointing that some person or persons would deliberately and callously shoot two fur seals in the head.” He said Ohau Point was a popular stopoff between Picton and Kaikoura. The waterfall pool inland from the colony, where seal pups gather and play between

May and September, had become a popular attraction with around 12,000 visits a month he said. A volunteer from the Ohau Seals Volunteers, who help educate people visiting the pool about seals, found the two animals around midday on Saturday and reported it to DOC. Under the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 there are penalties of up to six months imprisonment or a fine of up to $250,000 for killing or harming fur seals or other marine mammals plus a further fine of up to $10,000 for every marine mammal the offence was committed against. In late 2010, 25 seals, including pups, were found beaten to death at Ohau Point seal colony. Two men were later arrested. One was convicted and the trial of the other is scheduled for September. Anyone with information is asked to contact the DOC South Marlborough office (03) 572 9100 or Kaikoura police.

Picton man Percy Chandler has brought his diabetes and weight under control thanks to a life saving programme.

Picton man Percy Chandler has battled Type 1 diabetes for 23 years and found he was having trouble keeping it under control. At age 63 Percy knew he was losing the battle with his weight and health and his condition meant that he struggled with simple tasks such as putting on his shoes and socks. So when he was presented with the opportunity to reclaim his health and his life, he took it. This opportunity came from a programme called ‘How to save a life’, sponsored by System:slim and UFS Pharmacy in Blenheim. Mentor Jean Rooney of System:slim worked with Percy offering support, health products and preparing eating plans. “We walk the journey with him supporting him as he changes his lifestyle and eating habits. This is not about a weight loss diet but a lifestyle change for health and well being,” Jean said. Before Percy said he struggled finding a diet that was sustainable with the hours he worked and his lifestyle, and found he was snacking all the time and was not eating regular meals.

“It was hard keeping my diabetes under control, I was having to take high doses of insulin by injection each day. “So when I was asked did I want to look at a system for my health and to lose weight, I was immediately interested,” he said. Percy took on the challenge and lost 5.1kgs in the first month. “I lost 2kg in the first week, 650g in the second and 500g in the third week. The most amazing thing of all is how my need for insulin injections has reduced. “At the moment one of the reasons for turning up for my weekly meetings is to skite about my diabetic level being so good. I also think the support from Jean and weekly meetings is also contributing toward my success,” he said. Proud of Percy’s progress Jean said the small changes made every day is helping the weight to come off and his health to improve. “As part of System:slim and UFS Pharmacy we are very proud of Percy for taking up the challenge and we look forward to following his journey,” Jean said.

I was in Seddon. I grabbed my Iphone. I’m from Christchurch and it was way different to the ones from there.

I was in bed when I heard my mirror and lamp shaking. I wasn't too sure if it was going to carry on, so I just stood in the door frame to make sure.

I was sitting in the lounge reading the paper, I was slightly startled.

I was ironing and I thought ‘Oh’! I heard the noise first. I thought it was just a heavy truck down the road.

I was at home standing next to my toilet door and the door started rattling, so I ran to the lounge to my son.

Wayne Nyberg Blenheim I had the day off work, I was with my mum and she yelled out to me. I knew it was an earthquake because I came here from Christchurch.

Premature Babies Dear Ed, I read in the Listener a while ago about premature babies and the debate about how much oxygen they should get. Well I got thinking that I hope the newborns are kept in the dark, as that would be the case if they had not been born so early. Could they cover their dear wee eyes? I think it would aid growth and soothe them, and not dress them but keep them warm. K M Warren

Clifford Bay Dear Ed, What an interesting read from Patriot re Clifford Bay I don't know what was the funniest. The Mayor, Greens and Labour hopping up and shouting at the environment, or the comment about all NewZealanders fronting up with the proposed $420m. In my humble opinion without theatre content. The best thing that could happen to Picton would be to see the backside of the old ferries heading to Clifford Bay. I can’t agree that Picton and Blenheim communities will be devastated economically. Picton would go through a short period of adjustment for goodness sake it isn't a new proposal? When the wheat is separated from the chaff a great destination will rise from the ashes. Where theres gain theres pain as the saying goes. As an experienced visitor/tourist operator we are only treading water.

Speaking and hosting visitors on a daily basis gives one an insight into what is happening and whats holding the town back. Bring it on I say. I have it on good authority that two overseas investors have shown fiscal interest in the proposed Clifford Bay development. Picton will attract private enterprise to operate a comparable ferry service that may have fewer scheduled trips, that runs with fuller passenger numbers and keeps a timetable. I appreciate government-run operations at times lack the personal touch but they do their best under the circumstances. Nothing wrong with corporates, self employed or people working hard for a profit. They can make a difference as can those valued employees that many bosses bend over backwards to accommodate Maggie M

Blenheim missed out Dear Ed, A month or so ago I went to a Glenn Miller concert in Nelson and it seemed half of Marlborough was there. It was in Nelson's Trafalgar Centre and what a great night of music! The concert was going on to Westport, then Greymouth. But why was Blenheim missed out? If the Trafalgar Centre could be used, why not Blenheim's Stadium? Blenheim is building a new theatre. Why I'm not sure. But I'm sure it's the wrong time with rate rises. If Nelson can use a stadium why not Blenheim? Questions and more questions. Tommy Dorsey

Elections thought Dear Ed, We have Marlborough District Council elections this year. Then next year is general election. Here's a very good thought to ponder on. "Remember, politicians and diapers should be changed often, and for the same reason." Ken Lloyd

Building body, not belly Mutant® Mass (2.2kg/5lb) was $99.90 now $79.90

Common sense? Dear Ed, Cnr Jerrams profile in the Sun (July 17) makes for an interesting read. How to commit political suicide 101. The first law of survival when entering a race is decide who your opposition is not who you want run behind. Cnr Jerram says of Mayor Sowman. “A very sound, a very good man”. “Sound and good” do not a leader make! Stupid statement should the incumbent Mayor get dumped as may well be the case. Then about Cn Terry Sloan as one of the “younger” councillors. How

downright condescending. Terry deserves better than to be treated like some kindergarten kid to be patted on the head by Cnr Jerram or anyone else for that matter. If I were Terry, I’d be horrified at being referred to in this way. Then to “private agendas”? Here I was thinking Council is about openness, transparency, honesty, integrity and teamwork. So now we know. Perhaps Cnr Jerram could tell us who writes the secret stuff in his next interview? Calling for change.

Jackie Swanson Jackie Swanson of Picton hit the ground running when she started her business Great Soundz Karaoke in October 2012. She’s always loved music and 15 years ago bought the karaoke equipment. Kevin and Janice Colville, of Mikey’s bar in Picton knew that, and asked if she would like to give it a go. “I thought ’Why not?’.” Jackie loves singing and she says it gives her a kick to see others enjoying themselves

while she is making music. She now runs theme nights at Mikey’s with the help of two friends. One was 50s-60s-70s music, and there’s an 80s-90s night coming up. The drag night was a huge hit when they went all out and brought in a drag queen from Wellington. “Priscilla Queen of the Sounds...” Great Soundz Karaoke has also been to the Starborough tavern in Seddon and are hoping their Friday night gig goes ahead without any earthquakes. “The first time, no one wanted to sing, but by the end we lost the mike. It just went round the crowd. Everyone had a go. So cool!”

Gayle Chambers has been in the Programmes Coordinator role for the New Zealand Red Cross Marlborough branch for over four years, and says it has been a very fulfilling experience. “In my working career I have always worked for charities such as Cancer Society and Hospice, so to me this was another role where I could be helping people in vulnerable situations.” When Gayle joined the Red Cross Marlborough branch the Meals on Wheels

and community van programmes were already well established, and from there she developed additional community programmes. “We have a community visiting service run through aged care facilities focusing on people who have no family or friends. “We have also rented a plot at the community gardens in Ballinger Street where we get people involved who have low income, are new to NZ and wanting to form local networks or people who love to garden but have no space for one. “The produce we grow goes back to those who help to grow it,” Gayle says. The NZ Red Cross Marlborough branch is always needing volunteers to help deliver their programmes to those in the community experiencing difficulties in their lives.

Donna Lee Blenheim business owner Donna Lee has launched a new business called All About Homes Ltd, focusing on project management, insurance appraisals, renovations and new builds. Donna has been in the building industry for 12 years with experience in both the commercial and residential sectors. It is this experience which she draws upon when servicing clients through All About Homes Ltd. All About Homes Ltd was created following repeated requests for renovation work and

property appraisals through Donna’s building business Peter Ray Homes Marlborough which she owns with husband Rowan. “There was definitely a need in the market place, particularly when it comes to individual property reports and insurance appraisals. “There are big changes being made to home insurance policies and what people may not realise is that it is up to them to nominate the value of their home,” Donna says. All About Homes Ltd offers property owners a comprehensive on-site assessment and full report based on the total costs involved in rebuilding their home. It is this figure which should be used when insuring a home, she says. “It is easy to over or under value a home so it’s important to have it done correctly.”

People are urged not to purchase prescription medication online due to quality and safety risks.

Crackdown on online medicine sales Medsafe is warning about the dangers of buying medicines online following a joint Medsafe and Customs crackdown on substandard, illegal or counterfeit medicines. Medsafe Manager Compliance Management Derek Fitzgerald says prescription medicines purchased online are risky because quality, safety and effectiveness can’t be guaranteed. Prescription medicines are potent substances and as such should only be used following a consultation with a doctor. Medsafe and Customs participated in the week-long Operation PANGEA VI led by INTERPOL (June 18 - 25). This is the sixth time New Zealand authorities have participated. Customs targets all incoming international mail suspected to contain medicines, and thousands of interceptions are referred to Medsafe each year. As a result of Operation PANGEA VI, 298 packages were held requiring further investigation, more than double the number investigated last year (124). These parcels originated from 32 different countries around the world (21 last year)

and were stopped because they contained prescription medicines, weren’t labelled or were known to contain undeclared or hidden ingredients. The most common sources of these products were India (79), USA (59) and China (30). Mr Fitzgerald says unlabelled medicines were the most prevalent products examined by Medsafe (8774 individual tablets). Medicines for weight loss, diabetes and insomnia were the next most prevalent. Only one parcel contained a counterfeit or fake product - the same as last year. Medsafe strongly encourages anyone intending to buy prescription medicines via the internet to consult their doctor who can advise on potential side effects, interactions with other medicines and appropriate dosage. Prescription medicines are referred to Medsafe by Customs to ensure compliance with New Zealand law. Most prescription medicines Medsafe detains are held until the importer provides a valid doctor’s prescription - if this does not occur they are destroyed.

Pneumonia dangers Pneumonia is an infection of the air sacs in the lungs and is caused by bacteria, viruses or, rarely, fungi. Most cases of pneumonia are caused by bacteria, most commonly bacteria called streptococcus pneumonia but viral pneumonia is more common in children. Anyone can develop pneumonia but some groups are at greater risk: Babies and toddlers - particularly those born prematurely People who have had a recent viral infection - such as a cold or flu Smokers, people with chronic lung conditions, people with suppressed immune systems, people who drink excessive alcohol, patients in hospital and people who have had strokes. Pneumonia can develop when a person breathes in small droplets that contain pneumonia-causing organisms. It can also occur when bacteria or viruses that are normally present in the mouth, nose and throat, enter the lungs. Symptoms include: High fever, chills, shortness of breath, increased breathing rate, a worsening cough that may produce discoloured or bloody

sputum (phlegm) and sharp chest pains – caused by inflammation of the membrane that lines the lungs. In babies and children, symptoms may be less specific and they may not show clear signs of a chest infection. Commonly they will have a high fever, appear very unwell, and become lethargic. They may also have noisy or rattly breathing, have difficulty with feeding and make a grunting sound with breathing. It is also possible for the skin, lips and nail beds to become dusky or bluish. This is a sign that the lungs are unable to deliver enough oxygen to the body. If this occurs it is vital to seek medical assistance straight away. Most cases of pneumonia can be treated at home. However babies, children, and people with severe pneumonia may need to be admitted to hospital for treatment. Pneumonia is usually treated with antibiotics, even if viral pneumonia is suspected as there may be a degree of bacterial infection as well. The type of antibiotic used and the way it is given will be determined by the severity and cause of the pneumonia.

Golden years of friendly rivalry On Monday night July 22 over 40 Grovetown and Strand club indoor bowlers, past and present, celebrated the 50th jubilee of their annual battle for the coveted Jackson Neal trophy. Mr Jackson of Grovetown and Mr Neal of the Strand club were great rivals on the mat and great friends off it. In 1963 they donated a cup with their names on it to be contested on a home and away basis every year To the credit of everyone involved in the competition it is still going strong. While early honours for the cup went to Grovetown, recent victories have gone to the Strand. Grovetown however hopes to pull them back in the next round. The Strand Club began bowling began in the National Party rooms in the Strand Arcade, now part of the Farmers’ complex. They currently play on a Thursday evening at the Redwoodtown Community Hall As the name suggests, Grovetown began its history in Grovetown and after a number of moves are now playing at The Foundry on Wednesday evenings. (Right)Christine Westonbury, with over 30 years with the Strand Indoor Bowling Club, cuts the cake. Enjoying the moment were, from left, Peter Hand, Ivy Miller and Colleen King, along with David Brown (partly obscured at back).

Marlborough Community College is celebrating raising $510.80 in one day for the Child Cancer campaign. Students and staff showed their artistic flair as they baked, designed and iced cupcakes on Thursday July 18. Each class was given a budget to design amazing cupcakes with no guidelines except to have fun for a great cause. The cupcakes were sold for $3 each and the $510.80 far exceeded their goal of $200. The college has had a long-standing affiliation with Child Cancer, taking special pride in

the fact that Brad Huntley and Aaron Senior in 2005 kayaked across the Cook Strait for the same cause.

Kart drivers return more experienced By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough Kart Club drivers Cooper Forbes (10), Leighton Stanton (13) and William Exton (9) faced tough competition at the weekend when they travelled to Christchurch for the Armstrong Motor Group 2013 KartSport New Zealand National Schools Championships. Club president Shaun Forbes said the boys each faced hard work in their classes as they battled against drivers with more experience

on the track and in national competitions. Cooper placed 10th in the Junior Restricted class while first timers Leighton placed 16th in Formula Junior and William placed 14th in Cadets. "It was a big eye opener for the boys who all did extremely well," said Shaun. "There were a lot of national title holders racing including one driver who had been to Japan and raced, so overall they have come away having learned a lot."

NZ se lecti o n fo r rowers Marlborough rowers Robbie Manson and Duncan Grant have been selected for the New Zealand team to contest the world championships at the end of August. Picton’s Olympic gold medallist rower Joseph Sullivan made himself unavailable for selection but is to return to the squad in October to prepare for the 2014 season.

Life members Long-serving members of the Renwick Cricket Club Darryl Roughan and Andrew Marshall were this month voted in as life members of the Renwick Cricket Club

Local girls winners The Marlborough girls’ team were tournament winners when the Mainland Zone under-15 basketball tournament was held at Marlborough Lines Stadium at the weekend. They took on, and beat, teams from the West Coast Nelson, Canterbury White and Mid Canterbury. They went down to Canterbury Black in their first match, but in the decider managed to beat them as well to come out top tournament team.

The full squad of the New Zealand King Salmon MBC First XV.

Loss worthwhile

While the final score in their Blenheim match saw New Zealand King Salmon MBC First XV go down to Naenae in a friendly with the scoreline 38 -22, coach Gray Cornelius said the game was worthwhile. “It provided certain players with valuable game time before heading into the crunch part of the season.” The first half performance was not good enough and lacked passion, intensity and they had too many unforced errors he said. “In the second half the boys addressed some of these issues but it was too late. This is a valuable lesson for all players in our squad.” “Some guys put their hand up for

positions in the 22 for next week while other guys need to work on basic skills and fitness. “The starting XV will see the return of the five boys who have been away at training camps as well as two to three other guys who were resting injuries. “Our next game is Saturday July 27 versus Christ College in Christchurch, a crucial Press Cup game.” Try scorers for MBC were Bevan Moody, Josh Holdaway, Israel Hebberd and Litani Tautoa. Wadsco Giants justify promotion In an early President’s Grade game in Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League, Wadsco Giants played Woodbourne Lane Street. It was an entertaining game and the Giants win in all three sets showed why they deserved to be bumped up to that grade. Woodbourne Mixed Brew lost to Cri Clovers in all three sets. The never give up attitude Week Award. On the court next door Treefellas played Kinoaths in another close game that ultimately saw Kinoaths take all three sets.

We want to hear what YOU have to say...

In C grade, Yoyo was a couple of players down due to school holidays and it made a difference when they played Safe Crackers. Their setting and serving let them down and with years of experience Safe Crackers took all three sets. Motley Crew, first on the table on seven points met second-placed Westmeat Geriatrics. The Geriatrics started well taking the first set but Motley Crew narrowly took the next two. Brazil played Woodbourne Social, a team which is improving each week. They took all three sets. In other results, Magnum beat Smashed ‘em Bro in three

straight sets, and in mixed grade, Desperate Housewives beat The Young Guns by the same margin as did the Meaters against Yet to Be Decided. The ATeam did likewise against Marlborough Musseleers, while Mayfield Motors beat MIA 2-1 and Indevin Thunderballs beat the Pictonites 3-0.
