Airport Fire Service Cutback By Kristy Martin Cutbacks to the RNZAF Fire Service at Blenheim Airport mean volunteer firefighters are now the first response for emergencies at night and on weekends. The airport’s military fire service was recently downsized from a 24-7 operation to 7am-5pm weekdays only. NZ Fire Service volunteers from Renwick and Blenheim will now respond to any incidents outside those hours. Airport chief executive Dean Heiford said the reduction of service was a loss for the airport. “They (RNZAF) did consult us. We didn’t like the decision but it was their decision to make. “We had 14 fully-trained fire people living on the base with access to equipment and fire engines whenever they needed. That is a Rolls Royce service. Continued page 2

By Glenise Dreaver “No airs and graces. That’s me,” says sitting MDC councillor Graeme Taylor. He is standing for his fourth term because, he says, he loves this community and the people. “I was born here and I have a passion for it.” This latest council, with its eight new members, was “a bit shaky” at the start, he said. “But it has settled down. “Once you have a consensus you need to work together. Further disruption and disagreement is neither useful nor beneficial to anyone. They were, he said “extremely fortunate” to have a very good leader to work with. His background in rugby has seen him advance from schoolboy rugby through to NZRFU councillor level, managing the New Zealand 7’s on the world circuit. “That taught me so much about the necessity of working together to achieve goals and about meeting protocol and governance. “I believe I have been able to bring those skills to the council table.”

I’m not a TV watcher.” There was also a need for thoughtfulness he said. “I’ve learnt not to be provoked into revealing myself.” Age and gender was not an issue for councillors he said. “Experience and co-operation is what’s needed. And regardless of whether you like the decision, once consensus is reached you just have to move forward.”

Rarangi Surf Club. His council roles have included being chairman of council’s assets and services committee and working with the Older Persons Forum. Graeme says his years of experience have left him appreciative of the staff. “A super lot and it’s a very well-led organisation.” A big challenge has been to keep rates at an affordable level. “But it’s like your own property. If you don’t keep up the maintenance, things go backwards. And there is a cost to that.” On the challenges to come, he said that while the Clifford Bay decision was not a council one, they had to be prepared for it whatever way it went. “I personally hope the ferry terminal stays in Picton. I hope tourists and our own people will get the opportunity to travel in the area. “But whatever happens will offend some people.” The challenges of being a councillor included working with your diary, he said. “And you have to control your hours. There’s a lot of reading. But that suits me. Sitting MDC councillor Graeme Taylor.

Airport Fire Service Cutback Continued from page 1 It is a huge advantage in terms of response times. “When you go from that to an offsite volunteer service, it is a reduction of service however you look at it.” He said the airport not only included hangars and runways, but living

quarters and kitchens, so any number of potential fire incidents could occur. But while Mr Heiford couldn’t comment on the capabilities of the NZ Fire Service, he said he would be speaking with the volunteer brigades to see if they required additional training or equipment.

“There will be no effect for the travelling public,” he said. “We (still) fulfil minimum requirement under civil aviation law in regards to fire safety. We just don’t have that luxury of having a fullyoperational RNZAF fire service on base anymore.”

The RNZAF yesterday said it was preparing a statement in response to enquiries made by the Sun. An NZ Fire Service representative declined to comment on the issue, saying it was an internal matter for the RNZAF.

Windfall for theatre

inbrief

The Sun

$100,000 from gaming machines The Marlborough Theatre Trust received a surprise windfall to the value of $100,000.00 on Friday. Robyn Cuddon chairperson of the theatre fundraising committee said the cheque from the Pelorus Trust was a lovely surprise. “It has made my day and makes all the hard work worthwhile.” The Pelorus Trust Chief Executive Scott Simmiss says the $100,000.00 is from the gaming machine operators two sites in Marlborough, The Grove Hotel and The Royal Hotel. Scott said the Pelorus Trust was impressed with the truly regional aspect of the theatre project and were delighted to be able to support this worthwhile project. Robyn told the Sun, the timing of the grant from the Pelorus Trust was brilliant coming just before the theatre

trust was about to embark on their second major stage of fundraising effort with a target of $1.8 million. This fundraising will focus on theatre services and the Pelorus Trust $100,000.00 grant/cheque will go specifically towards theatre services Robyn said. Young people like Hannah Roche will benefit from the ASB theatre and she cannot wait to perform in the new theatre. Hannah learns ballet, Highland and contemporary dance at the Marlborough Dance Centre. She has just returned from the NZ Highland and National Dancing Championships held in Hastings. Competing in the under 16 year age group she was placed third, an exceptional placing Scott Simmiss, chief executive of the Pelorus Trust, Hannah Roach and Robyn considering she has just turned Cuddon, chairperson for the Theatre Fundraising Committee in front of an artists impression of the new ASB Theatre. 14.

Elephants and eels part of Lions history By Kristy Martin Back in 1963, six huge elephants ridden by councillors thundered down Market Street during the first-ever Bleheim Lions Club fundraising event. Soon after, other Lions Club projects featured a frog-jumping contest, a dog paddle race for real dogs and an eel-catching competition. Fifty years later, the activities of the local Lions have changed quite drastically. But their core values of community servitude remain the same. Newly-elected president Paul Davidson has made a documentary film showcasing the history of the Blenheim Lions in honour of the club’s 50th anniversary. He became fascinated by the subject matter after club secretary Mark Yurjevich compiled a booklet about the longstanding club. The light-hearted 15-minute film features footage of the incredible 1963 elephant race, which raised money for children with disabilities, photographs of various community projects and even an American rap song celebrating the Lions Club organisation. “I realised the history was not just

a fascinating summary of social change in Blenheim, but I also saw the potential for an entertaining and informative short film,” Mr Davidson said.

“It shows the Lions as having a longstanding tradition of service, but also as a forwardthinking organisation in a fast-changing world.”

The Sun is proud to introduce Kristy Martin, our new journalist at The Blenheim Sun, drawn here from Queensland, Australia. She has come to us from the Fraser Coast Chronicle, an APN daily with a journalistic staff of about 20. Before that she worked for the Tweed Daily News, having gone to Queensland straight after her graduation with a BA majoring in journalism. That came from Monash University in Melbourne, where she was born and brought up. Kristy, now 29, did the police and court round at Fraser, but she is looking forward to the wider range of stories she will be doing here. “I’ve always loved writing,” she said yesterday, adding that she still does creative writing in her spare time. She is also looking forward to going skiing, and to the watersports she will pick up in Picton in the summer. And Kristy, who arrived on Saturday, has not been at all fazed by the earthquakes that have been shaking the region since then. “I haven’t felt a ny! ” s h e said.

Hunters urged to help feed falcon By Kristy Martin Local hunters are being urged to help feed the Marlborough falcon by donating their unwanted rabbit, duck and geese offcuts. The initiative comes as the Marlborough Falcon Trust partners up with Marlborough Hunting and Fishing store in the lead up to this year’s falcon breeding season. Hunting and Fishing store owner Don Hansen encouraged local

hunters to support the region’s favourite bird of prey by helping to give them a varied diet. The move was also aimed at reducing hunting wastage. “Rather than throwing away waste parts, we are asking people to come down with their gutted rabbits, duck necks and heads, or goose necks and heads. “We don’t want people to bring in all kinds of weird and wonderful things, and no rotten stuff

Local dramas feature Standing, from left, the two-person cast of the MGC drama “Cut”, Lee Stuart and Nerys Udy, while seated front is the cast of “Masks”, Bonnie Harrison and Jadzia Michna-Konigstorfer. The two plays are entered in the district’s TheatreFest 2013, a competitive festival of short plays to be held at the Boathouse Theatre on Saturday August 3 at 7.30pm. “Cut”, written and directed by MGC’s Shalom Del’Monte Aberhart, explores issues of self harm. “It’s about exploring the issues and breaking stereotypes,” said Lee. Coloured masks are used in “Masks”, directed by Heather Jameson, to illustrate and explore different periods in a life. A third entry, from Havelock, is “Curses Foiled Again!” a comedy directed by Jennie Johnson. The winners will compete against other finalists from Canter bury and the West Coast regions, again at the Boathouse, on August 23-24. The national Theatrefest finals will then be run in mid-September.

either.” Every hunter who participates will go into the draw to win a $500 Stoney Creek jacket courtesy of Marlborough Hunting and Fishing. Mr Hansen said the scraps can be donated to his store, on Main Street Blenheim, every Sunday during the month of August. The winner of the jacket will be drawn at 1pm on Sunday August 26.

He is now taking his passion to new heights, preparing for a craft beer tour of the United States with five other lovers of the brewers’ art. They will visit 13 breweries in their fourteen-day coach tour between September 5 to September 19, travelling from San Francisco to Seattle. With the airfares costing $2700 and the trip itself $4900, it’s not cheap. “Though it includes most meals and accommodation.” The object of it all is learning, said Mike. “It’s hard work, but some of us have got to do it.”

$13,500 raised by talent show By Kristy Martin More than $13, 500 raised at this year’s “Stars in Your Eyes” talent show will filter back into the community through local school and youth programs. Jon Moore of the Spring Creek and Districts Lions Club hailed the sixth annual event as a resounding success, with over 520 people attending over the two nights in June. Mr Moore said he wanted to thank the community for its generous support. “This event was only possible through the extraordinary support we receive from our community,” he said. “The proceeds from this event exceed $13,500 and all moneys raised are returned to the community through a variety of youth projects, benefiting local schools and youth groups.” Show co-ordinator Robyn Simmons said this year’s talent quest was “one of the best” performance-wise. Blenheim ballet teacher Nina McCollum’s portrayal of Kate Bush took out first place, with her $1000 prize money going to the Marlborough Riding for the Disabled. Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: How reliant are you on your cellphone? Could you live without it?

Annabelle Lewis Blenheim

Johnny Berry Blenheim

Kim Neil Blenheim

Laura Li Taylor Blenheim

Max Bicknell Blenheim

No, I need it to contact everyone.

Yes, there are better ways to communicate. Modern technology has reduced the way people communicate with each other.

I’m fifty percent reliant, for maps and to keep in contact with friends and check my bank account.

Pretty reliant but not social texting, use it to communicate because it has everything on it like my gmail because I don’t use a computer.

If I had a better cellphone I probably would be more reliant on it. However I just use my phone for the basics.

Petros Kapralous Blenheim Extremely reliant but being older and have lived without one it would be easy to go without.

Letters to the editor

Nature’s tune Dear Ed, When one season actually slips into the next is sublimely subtle - Nature calls the tune. Don't we know it from the current earthquakes?! Spring bulbs are pushing up, the daphne's at budburst. But it's not Spring yet. August signals Spring's start on the Gregorian calendar. On the seasonal calendar August, and the waning winter sweet, mark midWinter, falling this year on August 2nd and named for Brigid, Irish goddess, keeper of the fire. But, on this sacred day, rather than warmth, the emphasis is on light, so is also First Light, and celebrates Earth's first stirrings as She responds to Spring's wake-up call. It's a time to contemplate, hope and get rid of old habits and ideas to make way for new beginnings and things to come. For Maori its Pakawera and Hongonui acknowledging things are withered and scarce - save for inanga! It's also Groundhog Day. The Ancients called it Imbolc meaning ewes' milk; lambs being one of the first hints of Spring. Arvensis

Tuis and Bellbirds

Korean Jaunt Dear Ed, Prime Minister Key's visit to Korea for a free trade agreement is not in NZ's interests. The free market ideology has been proven wrong. Yes exports may increase but so do imports and with a lot of cheap, unnecessary purchases. It is basically bad housekeeping to spend more (imports) than earnings (exports). NZ loses out with free trade agree-

ments because (a) Trade deficit increased (b) Cheap imports kill local industry opportunities. I would rather pay double for many good NZ made than a few dollars for the same but inferior goods, that don't last. So PM is costing us with his extravagant jet setting and getting us a dead loss deal. Don Coyote

Dear Ed, The well intentioned but unrealistic idea by the Marlborough District Council and green groups of planting native trees to get tuis and bellbirds on the Wairau Plains is a waste of effort and money. Why just native trees? The tuis I see around town are invariably in flowering gums. Gums, bottle brush, grevilleas, abutilons and other "introduced" shrubs and plants are sought after by native birds. Besides they are much more colourful than 90 per cent of native trees. Also besides we are in a 21st century ecosystem now, and should not be in futile fashion, turning the clock back to 500 AD. If council wants to do some environmental good how about rooting out Old Man's Beard which grows on council reserves (Taylor River) and along roadsides? Frank Henry

Two vehicles were broken into on Dillons Point Rd over the weekend. The offender(s) have taken the car stereo from one and a wallet from the other. A vehicle was also broken into near the Wairay Valley township. Loose change was taken from the vehicle .

one on one with the Sun

The Sun

Life in the travelling lane Russell and Robyn Montgomery hope others will be inspired by their experiences of four years of travel and work.... Here they talk to Sun reporter Glenise Dreaver. Being “treed” by a predatory 4.5m croc in Australia’s Kakadu National Park was only one of numerous adventures that Blenheim’s Russell Montgomery and wife Robyn had in their “midlife crisis” years of OE between 2007 and 2011. Russ and a French tourist had met up the tree, getting a great photograph of a billabong. “That croc meant business and the Frenchman panicked. I had a real job persuading him not to run for it,” said Russell. “ Crocs are incredibly fast.” It was over twenty minutes before it gave up. Russ also tells of spending hours with a venomous black tiger snake sunning himself on a rock. They had an understanding he said. When it inched closer than about half a metre, Russ sent the message to back off. Which it did. It was a shock though to find another right behind his shoulder. (There were a pair.) Russ and Robyn waited for their OE until their family was independent. He resigned as MDC reserves and amenities manager and Robyn as Cuddon’s debit controller. They bought a 4WD and caravan on the Sunshine Coast where they started their 55,000km working holiday round the Australian coast. The rig cost more than expected. Panic. “We were down to our last $5000 for five years. How will we buy food? Petrol?” The first day, in Monto National Park, they ate lunch with two elderly ladies then said goodbye. Ninety kilometres down the road, in a supermarket, the women called them. They were ready to drive back to Monto as they had found them a

job. Shovelling grain seed. After two weeks, 12 hours a day six days a week that boss organised another job 300k down the road. The one non-negotiable was always that there was a job for both. “We went to spend time together.” Rural areas were, however, so short staffed that for four years they were never unemployed for more than 12 hours, sometimes half an hour. Tour bus driving, cheffing, tour guiding, manual work ... “Employers were desperate for reliable staff.” The couple worked for eight months each year and travelled for about four, yet unexpectedly came away with good savings. There was only one non-negotiable date and place – Robyn’s fiftieth birthday in the Greek Islands. The brochures advertised a daily ferry from the Turkish port of Mamaras. Not true. And in Delphos, Robyn’s father was waiting. “She just sat in the gutter and bawled,” said Russ. After some worried hours he found a “kindly old gent” who organised places on a Russian hydrofoil. The itinerary of their months in Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East reads like an atlas index. “And we travelled on a whim.” Egypt was special. Ask the couple about their guided horse and camel tour and Russell’s Gaza pyramid climb. Russ has come back and picked up another dream, to go out on his own. “I’ve started my own maintenance and project management business.”

s s e n i s u b y d o b e h T Stress busting tips Stress is a normal part of life. Many events that happen to you and around you -- and many things that you do yourself -- put stress on your body. You can experience stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts. How Does Stress Affect Health? Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress - a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen

certain symptoms or diseases. Stress also becomes harmful when people use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs to try and relieve their stress. Unfortunately, instead of relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, these substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems. Here are some tips for controlling stress: 1. Get organised and create a sense of empowerment and control. 2. Work it off with a regular exercise programme to help release stress relieving hormones. 3. Develop strategies to help deal with unexpected moments,

whether it's having a backup ride for the kids or a Plan-B for dinner. 4. Take a moment out of your day to relax, allowing you to catch your breath and review daily goals. 5. Set realistic goals as nobody likes to fail. Keep them well focused, task orientated and realistic. 6. Taking a nap will help to improve mood, outlook and one's stress-handling ability. 7. Stay involved as boredom creates stress. Hobbies, friends and activities can all play a role. 8. Eat well as poor nutrition both alters biochemical profiles, leading to feelings of exhaustion and stress.

Exercise for healthy body and mind Interesting facts about the human body Exercise is good for your physical and mental health. It can help you to develop a lean body, strong muscles, and a strong heart and can also enhance your emotional and mental fitness. Before you begin a new exercise program you should check with your doctor to make sure it is safe for you to do so. For the greatest health benefits, experts recommend 20-30 minutes of aerobics (running, swimming, or biking) three or more times a

week, and some kind of muscle strengthening and stretching at least twice a week. If you can’t do that, you can still get health benefits by doing half hour or more of moderate activity at least five times a week. You can begin by doing light stretches and taking a walk around the block, parking further away from work or even take the stairs instead of the elevator. Even the smallest of changes can be helpful.

Your choice for private elective surgery, right here in Blenheim.

The colour of a humans skin is determined by the level of pigment melanin that the body produces. Those with small amounts of melanin have light skin while those with large amounts have dark skin. Each side of the brain interacts largely with just one half of the body, but for reasons that are not yet fully understood, the interaction is with opposite sides, the right side of the brain interacts with the left side of the body, and vice versa. Human eyes contain a small blind spot where the optic nerve passes through the retina. Our brains use information from the other eye to fill in the vision gap so it is rarely, if ever, noticed. As well as having unique fingerprints, humans also have unique tongue prints.

The human eye is just one fascinating part of the human body.

Marlborough’s extensive earthquake heritage Story by Bob Bradley Marlborough has a rich history of earthquake experiences, the first recorded in 1848 when less than 200 people lived here. Using only records of written experiences the 1848 quake is estimated as being 7.1 in magnitude on the Richter scale, but it is debatable whether the epicenter was based on the Awatere fault or the Wairau. Expert opinion has come down on the latter. However, the issue has been further confused on recent findings that the Awatere fault appears to have had movement up to eight metres. The Wairau lagoons area subsided up to 1.8m and the quake created enough depth on the bar to allow shipping to start navigating the Opawa River. In another interesting result, the bythen elderly Te Rauparaha was staying at the Wairau Pa, hurt his hip in the quake and high tailed back to his Kapiti Island bastion. Following the huge 1855 Wairarapa earthquake, with its incredible uplifts and which affected the north east coast and Cape Campbell area, quite a lull occurred until 1950. It is interesting to note that in recent years the offshore Seddon locality has produced a host of small earthquakes which flag the area as being highly active and presaging our recent 6.5 experience. There have been seven over 3 off Seddon

since December 2012 and six over 3 on July 19, with more than 30 over 3 on July 21 before that day’s 6.5. Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk In the 10 months they have been operating, the SPCA Opshop in Blenheim has been able to donate its profits of around $8000 to SPCA Marlborough. The shop's success does not stop there, the "immense" generosity of the Marlborough community means that it had outgrown its small Main Street shop and expanded into a new premises on Grove Road. Everything in the shop including display tables, racks, computer and desks have been donated by the community, said Opshop manager Carol Schofield.

“Back to basics” says new president By Kristy Martin Newly-appointed Marlborough Chamber of Commerce president Nikki de Reeper says she wants to get back to basics, naming economic development as the primary focus in her new role. Ms de Reeper, who takes over the position following the voluntary departure of former chamber president Steve Riley, said she wanted to stay away from political issues and concentrate on the growth of the region. “At the moment there are a lot of political things going on and we want to sidestep that,” Ms de Reeper said. “We are trying to encourage the economic development by getting back to the plans for

World Breastfeeding Week 2013 Breastfeeding support: Close to mothers

augus t 1-7

“The key to best breastfeeding practices is continued day-to-day support for the breastfeeding mother within her home and community.”

From midwife to mother Tai’s breastfeeding journey Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk When Blenheim midwife Tai Dixon gave birth to her first child three months ago, she thought breastfeeding would be something she could achieve easily considering her experience and knowledge in supporting other mothers through birth. Within minutes of the birth of daughter Iona, Tai had plenty of skin to skin contact and breastfeeding got off to a good start. In the first week Iona gained weight and everything looked positive, but in the second week she had begun to lose weight. It was at this point that Tai realised her supply had begun to drop off despite all her efforts from the birth. “I received a lot of support from lactation consultant Jackie Martin, my midwife Sue Young as well as all my midwife friends who helped

me through this period so I could continue breastfeeding,” she said. Tai followed a strict regime of feeding and expressing milk and was prescribed medication to help boost her supply. Because Iona had lost weight she was referred to a paediatrician and from there Tai made the decision to use donor breast milk from a close friend while she built up her own supply. “It was a suggestion made by Jackie and Sue which worked out to be the best option as I was adamant that I wanted Iona to be exclusively breastfed,” Tai said. For two weeks Iona received milk from a donor as well as from Tai which helped her to gain weight while Tai got her supply back up. In total it took Tai six weeks of “hard work” to build her breast milk supply

to meet Iona’s demands, an experience she said made her more appreciative of breastfeeding mothers. “I am much more aware of how difficult breastfeeding can be after what I have been through, it hasn’t been easy but we got there,” she smiled. ‘Plenty of support’ is what Tai attributes her breastfeeding success to. “Support from Jackie and our local midwives has been invaluable, my husband has been hugely supportive and stood by me 100percent and my coffee group formed through the Marlborough Parents Centre has been a huge support. “From my experience as a midwife and as a new mother, I would say get as much support as you can. Breastfeeding is a natural thing for women, but it is not always easy, so if it’s important to you then stick at it,” she said. Wairau Hospital Core midwife Tai Dixon with her first child, Iona (13 weeks).

The Big Latch On T his yea r’s T he Big Latch On will be held at the Club’s of Marlborough this Friday from 10am. This is an event for all breastfeeding mums and supporters which involves mums latching on their babies after a countdown to 10:30am. This event is run annually by Womens Health Action and takes place in many different locations throughout New Zealand. Free morning tea and loads of spot prizes will be on offer so get together a group of breastfeeding friends and go along and be counted.

Marlborough Plunket proud to support Breastfeeding is celebrated around the world every year from 1 - 7 August with World Breastfeeding Week. Nelson Marlborough Plunket Area Manager, Sonya Briggs, says that deciding to breastfeed your baby is one of the most positive steps you can take towards ensuring they get the best start in life.

“Breast milk is the perfect food for infants and provides babies with all the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development. It’s the original fast food - it’s always fresh and delivered at the right temperature plus it’s free and readily available. “Breastfeeding is a skill that requires learning for both mother

and baby and there’s lots of support available for mums. PlunketLine (0800 933 922) is available 24 hours, 7 days a week or mum’s can talk to their local Plunket nurse or join a playgroup or parenting support group where other mum’s can offer support and information in a friendly and relaxed environment.”

DIRECTORS - MARLBOROUGH LINES LTD The Marlborough Electricity Power Trust is the sole shareholder of Marlborough Lines Limited on behalf of electricity users in the Marlborough region. The Trust is currently seeking to appoint Directors to the Board of Marlborough Lines Limited. Marlborough Lines provides 3,300 km of network lines to over 24,270 connections in the region and currently employs 180 staff. It also has similar network investments in Otago, Nelson and Bay of Plenty regions and operates successful contracting businesses in Marlborough, Otago and Southland. Candidates should bring to these roles a track record of previous governance experience, broad commercial and financial acumen and, ideally, some understanding of the power industry or regulated sectors, an economics degree (post graduate?) and proven skills in high level dispute resolution. The potential to move up to the Board Chairman’s role in a few years, would also be a desirable attribute. It is not a pre-requisite that the appointees reside in the Marlborough region, but an affinity for and understanding of local issues is desirable and there is a preference for the Chair to reside locally.

Death knell sounds for Podium The Podium is well on the way to destruction, with the earthquake-vulnerable building in central Blenheim yesterday showing what is left of its two-storey interior following an attack by a large excavator, working from Wynen Street. As promised, Wynen Street was reduced to one lane as the excavator worked. The site is expected to be

clear in just over a month. No 1 Shoe Warehouse in Blenheim will shift into the replacement single storey building, to be built by local firm T H Barnes and expected to be completed by January 31. The building was one of the 22 in Blenheim and Picton which had to be earthquake strengthened or demolished.

The Number One Shoe Warehouse remains closed after last week's earthquake. Concerns were raised due to heavyweight tiles in the ceiling and the decision was made to remove them. However, it is expected the business will be able to reopen later next week.

Old photos found Blenheim woman Juliet Lindsay is appealing for the owners of some old photographs found in her wardrobe. The photos are of an old Marlborough business, some with vehicles in them with 'Marlb. Towing Co' and the phone number 83379 written on the side of them. If anyone knows who these photographs belong to, you can contact Juliet on 578 8433.

Three of the tenants of Porse House in Market Street have decided to move elsewhere following the series of earthquakes that have struck the region. The Public Health Organisation, Child Youth and Family and Marlborough Community Law, have all left. Marlborough Community Law, whose tenancy expired at the end of this month anyway, have already shifted into their new office at 16 Market Street, formerly Bella Donna Lingerie. Manager Raewyn Trethaway said they were working with builders and electricians around them but the doors were open. The new offices would be more accessible for their clients she said. The 20+ staff at the PHO are operating out of the old Churchill Trust Ward at Wairau Hospital while they seek new permanent premises. Most of the 17 staff of Child, Youth and Family are working out of the WINZ building in Alfred Street in the meantime, while five are stationed in the Corrections Department office in Seymour Street.

There were concerns that the architect of the building, though not the contractors, had worked on Christchurch's CTV building in which 115 people died in the quake on February 22, 2011. As with that building, some problems emerged with the stairways. Andrew Besley, CE of the Marlborough District Council, said last week that some stairs had moved slightly in some areas. He said just after the big quake that the work required was relatively minor and probably easily fixed. Since then, two engineers have inspected it and deemed it safe. T H Barnes, the owners, had already started a strengthening programme before the July 21 jolt, and chief executive John Smithies said yesterday that the work on the stairways which were the first concern, was expected to be finished this week. He said he expected that the designs for the further strengthening could be completed by the end of August. That work was expected to be completed by the end of the year, or early next year he said.

Junior cyclists show the way Marlborough junior cyclists took most of the podium places in a weekend of racing hosted in both Blenheim and Nelson at the weekend. Cyclists competed in a time trial and road race in the Wairau Valley on Saturday, and a hill climb and circuit race organised in Moutere on Sunday. Top honours went to 14 year-old Ethan Batt, who won the A grade competition and 11 year-old Joseph Westend, who won the B grade. Ethan dominated the A grade, winning by a total of 2 mins 43 sec after the four stages were completed. Local cyclists Thomas Westend and Christopher

Grammer came second and third in the A grade competition for an all-Marlborough podium. A gutsy solo breakaway in the final circuit race gave Joseph a 45 sec margin overall in the B grade, with Nelson’s Ari Scott in second place, and Marlborough’s Shaun Woods in third. For junior cycling the girls race with the boys, however Blenheim’s Brittany Lucas was the best placed female rider in the B grade, ahead of Nelson’s Charlotte Grimwood. The weekend event, called the Top of the South Junior Development Tour, was jointly organised by both provinces to give junior cyclists some racing prior to the

National Secondary Schools Road Cycling championships at the end of September. Event organiser Lance Spencer commented that it was excellent to have a change of terrain and a larger field of competitors. “This is the first time we’ve had a two-day tour for this age group and it went really well. We sorted the riders based on ability, rather than age. It meant everyone had valuable training and even those newer to the sport had a good introduction to racing,” he said. “It was also good to see the kids making friends and supporting each other. We will be working toward regular Tasman junior racing. ”

the next two. In C Grade, the girls from Yoyo had a much better game with the return of twins Jenny and Rosie Argyle. They played Woodbourne Social with both teams trying super hard . Yoyos won two sets to one. In another C Grade game old rivals Westmeat Geriatrics played Safe Crackers. Westmeats though won all three sets. In Mixed Grade, Yet to be Decided were no match for MIA., which is starting to work well as a team, taking the first two sets easily but almost rested too much in the final set just winning 26-24.

Woodbourne Lane Street played Smashed ‘Em Bro in an evenly matched game. Smashed em Bro took the first set then Woodbourne

Mayfield Motors had another three sets to nil win when they played the Marlborough Musseleers. The A Team and Desperate Housewives were both down a player when they met, the latter team taking all three sets 25-11, 25-12 and 25-14. Time trial good annual test Marlborough Harrier Club members contested their annual time trial on Saturday afternoon on the lower track of the Wither Hills Farm Park. This has been a regular event on the calendar since 2008. It is used to assist the club handicappers leading into the road racing portion of the calendar when a number of handicapped events take place. It also aids in the selection of teams for the annual Queen Charlotte Relay. Organisation is very relaxed in that children can opt to run the 5k if they wish.

Winners in the children's grades were: Luke Jones, Emily Munro, Hannah Munro, Anna Barnes and Bailey McKay. The latter two opted to run the full 5km. John Kennedy headed home the main field in the 5km event, followed by Andrew Curnow and Robbie Barnes. Hellen Munro was the first walker home in a time of 41:5s.
