Builders nail it By Kristy Martin Three local home builders are helping to put Blenheim on the real estate map, taking out prestigious gold awards in the Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year competition. Peter Ray Homes, Stonewood Homes and Roger Hogg Builders each won gold in their respective categories at the regional finals held at the Convention Centre on Saturday night. Rowan and Donna Lee from Peter Ray Homes took gold in the New Homes $250k-300k category for a unique property they built for local couple Tim and Anna Gifford. The Lees proved they are a force to be reckoned with by also securing a bronze award for New Homes between $350k-400k. Continued page 3

TWICE WEEKLY

Story by Glenise Dreaver Photo Celeste Lodewyk First time councillor Geoff Evans still thinks the nil rates rise idea is well worth considering in the next council’s term. And as he is standing for a second term, he has every intention of raising the matter again. While councillor David Dew had it as a key plank in his election platform last time round, Geoff smiles and says: “It might even have been my idea.” “And I still think we should try for it. We might even like it,” he says. The former president of the Marlborough branch of Federated Farmers, who was elected in the rural Wairau/Awatere Ward, says he stood for council because he looked hard at where rural people stood. “I could see we were in trouble.” At national level, there was, he said, “... an economic mess. And rates were going up and the outlook was bleak.” On election, he resigned from the FF role to fully focus on his council work, he said. Geoff supports central government policy which has directed local bodies back to their core business. “They have told us to remove the social ‘wellbeings’ aspects of what we do and focus more on services ,” he said. He does sound a warning though. “You’ve got to get balance. There’s no point in

extremism, either in productivity measures or environmentalism. People don’t always realise that I am what I’d call a ‘practical conservationist’.” “And some social issues you can’t avoid.” It will come down to the choice of the voters, whether they want less rates and lower levels of service. One looming issue is, he says, the need to have a look at Blenheim’s CBD. “It needs more vibrancy.” The problems are those facing High Streets all over the country he says, as retail methods change. “It’s very difficult.” “We need to look at the Wairau Awatere Resource Management Plan too. Is it fair and reasonable? I’m keen to get involved in that.” He says the term of the last council was “quite difficult” to start with. ‘It’s a totally new environment and an awful lot to learn.” It did get a little easier as they went along, he said. And the Sheard report, which occurred after one new councillor’s allegation of corruption he believes was a good thing. “That cleared the air. We are probably the stronger for it.” He’s cautious about saying that all is totally well though. “We aren’t always pulling as a team.” Geoff is sure there will be changes on council following the October poll, but he says the changes can’t be predicted. “But what and where Sitting MDC councillor Geoff Evans. is up to the voters.”

Workers unhappy with wage bargaining offers Blenheim workers are unhappy with the “miserable” wage offers being laid down by major retail chains, according to the FIRST union. About 50 workers met with the union last week to campaign for decent work, and to discuss low wage offers from local retailers. Topics raised at the meeting, held

at the Brydan on Rose, included forestry safety, the living wage, and upcoming changes to employment law. Robert Reid, FIRST Union’s General Secretary, said the main discussion point was the miserable wage offers by major retail chains in current wage bargaining rounds.

“In particular local retail workers were very upset that the promise of the Career Retailer Wage has not lived up anywhere near expectations,” Mr Reid said. “Some workers have had their classification changed so there are a huge number of workers who wouldn’t qualify for the Career

Retailer Wage and are at risk of not receiving anything much at all in terms of a wage rise, in recent national bargaining talks.” Mr Reid said proposed employment law changes would make it harder for workers to organise collectively to push for more liveable wages.

Master Builders 2013 House of the Year Continued from page 1 With judges awarding points for various criteria, a gold award also went to Roger Hogg in the category of New Homes between $600k-$1 million, as well as to Stonewood Homes for best Show Home. Rowan Lee said Marlborough builders had done extremely well in the nation’s top building competition, considering the high calibre of entries. His wife Donna said Tim and Anna’s personalised 250sq home in Hiley Street, complete with polished concrete floors, display alcoves and bright red front door, was a deserving winner. “It was Tim and Anna’s design and they added many features specific to what would suit their family’s needs,” she said. For Tim and Anna, it was slightly daunting opening up their dream home for the scrutiny of the judges. “We were quite flattered but you’re always a bit nervous too,” Anna explained. “We knew that we loved it, but

we wondered if others would feel the same.” Meanwhile, the team at Stonewood Homes Marlborough were jumping for joy at the recognition of their Taylor Pass Road display home, which was also the winner for its category. Compa ny d i re ctor David Campbell said the entrants from Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast made competition tough. “I’ve never been so nervous in my life, and I’m not a person who gets nervous,” he said of the awards ceremony. According to Mr Campbell, potential clients regularly fall in love with the award-winning fourbedroom Renwick design, which accounts for half of the builds Stonewood Homes undertakes. “It’s the angled kitchen, they just love it. The dining room and the kitchen pick up the morning sun – it is just a lovely home to sell off. “It is an easy-flowing home that would be lovely to bring up a family in or it would be great to

New citizens sworn in Twenty-three people have been sworn in as New Zealand citizens at a ceremony in Blenheim last Friday. The new citizens, the majority of them British, were sworn in and welcomed by Mayor Alistair Sowman, who was assisted by Deputy Mayor Jenny Andrews, along with Flight Lieutenant Luke Elliott of the RNZAF and Lieutenant Commander Neil Connell of the RNZ Navy. Among the new citizens were four Samoans, two of whom managed to memorise the oath, three Canadians, two Tongans, one Fijian, a dozen Brits and one British Australian.

entertain in.” A new home build in Kaiteriteri and a renovation in Nelson were named the top homes for the region. “It was a great opportunity to see what everyone else in the industry is doing,” Mr Campbell said.

“Some of the homes in Nelson that won were just lovely. “We will definitely be entering again next year, but for now we wait with a level of anticipation to see if we go through to the nationals in November,” Mr Campbell said.

Smokefreerockquest winners named in top 20 By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough Smokefreerockquest 2013 winners Arm the Reckless (pictured right) have been named in the top 20 national winning bands. Band members Mitch Alderlieste, Liam Hardman and Hayden Batt received the news Monday night they had been chosen after submitting a 15 minute video recorded by local band Little Oceans, who have been aiding Arm the Reckless since their win. “It was a relief to finally hear the news,” laughed Mitch.

“It’s been a goal to get this far so it’s a great feeling to know we are almost there,” he said. The band’s video was sent in to a panel of Smokefreerockquest judges who chose the top 20 New Zealand bands. Over the next week the video will again be judged against the other 19, and six bands will be chosen to play off for the title. Mitch said they hoped to find out next Monday if they had been chosen. “We will be crossing our fingers all week,” he said.

Five homes tagged Police say graffiti vandals struck five Blenheim properties on the weekend. The garage door of an address in Francis St was tagged, along with properties on Fulton St, Cubitt St, Horton St and the walkway between Lucas St and Shirtliff St. Also on the weekend, an offender removed the front wheel from a bicycle that was locked to a bike stand outside the Marlborough District Library. They also tried to remove the back wheel but failed.

$65,000 raised for children’s hospital Story and photo by Kristy Martin The smiles of these three colouring competition winners were as bright as their awardwinning entries. When Blake HoukamauSollitt, 10, Taila Grant, 5, and Liv Theodore, 9, picked up their prize packs from The Warehouse in Blenheim, they were beaming from ear-to-ear. The trio have also helped put a smile on the faces of some sick kids, with the colouring competition part of an annual Warehouse fundraiser that has this year raised a massive $65,000 for the Wellington Children’s Hospital. Stores from Blenheim, Nelson, Motueka and Wellington collected donations from customers and sold lion toys to generate cash for the hospital, which also services sick and hurt kids from Marlborough. Blenheim store manager Ian Daubney said “a big thank you” to all who participated and donated. He said the colouring compe-

71 Market St BlenheiM The old Panel Shop building behind The Sun office in High St will be demolished on the weekend of August 17 & 18. The building has suffered internal cracks caused by the recent spate of earthquakes and has been deemed unsafe by engineers. Marlborough District Council currently use the old building for storage of files. The 270m2 site will be sealed once demolition is completed.

Having Problems with Your Dentures?

By Kristy Martin High E-coli levels which shut down Blenheim’s Taylor River to swimmers during summer were likely to have come from animal waste, a study by Marlborough District Council has found. Environmental scientist Steffi Henkel said the bacteria at Riverside, where council signs warned people not to swim for 28 days, was believed to have come from duck, wildfowl and dog faeces. “Most E-coli are harmless but some strains can make you sick,” she said. “The higher the E-coli concentration the higher the risk.” A report was submitted to the council’s environment committee last week.

It said the Taylor River at Riverside had the worst microbiological water quality of 21 sites monitored and that E-coli concentrations exceeded the national guidelines in more than half of the routine samples. “While it is not uncommon for rivers and streams to have elevated faecal bacteria concentrations during high flows, E-coli concentrations in the Taylor River were commonly elevated during low flows,” Ms Henkel. Doctors Creek was the most significant source of faecal bacteria and also had the greatest impact on the water clarity of the Taylor River water, the report said. The study is ongoing.

Blenheim girl graduates as RNZAF paramedic Growing up near the Air Force’s main training base, Blenheim local Jess Earnshaw saw firsthand the relationship between the Air Force, sport and learning opportunities and wanted to be a part of it. Now an Aircraftman (AC) in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), Jess has been posted to Burnham for the last two and a half years and has just graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Paramedic). The graduate diploma is a civilian university programme from Auckland University of Technology but conducted by the Defence Health School on Defence Force establishments. AC Earnshaw says one of the highlights of the course has been the integration between civilian and military health services. “Getting to work with ambulance crews from St John is a great experience, putting into practice the skills we learn in the classroom on real people that we can help is awesome.” Chief instructor of the Defence Health School, Major (MAJ) Brendan Wood says the course is world class. “The training we provide covers knowledge of the medic

Story sparks goat’s return By Kristy Martin Baby Girl the missing goat has been found, thanks to the keen eyes and ears of the community. The four-year-old caramel goat was untethered last week, leaving her Linkwater owners distraught. Owner Amanda Boothman said her son’s school bus driver had found Baby Girl on the side of the road about 10 minutes drive from where she went missing. “She was stolen because when we found her she had a black rope tied around her neck, hanging down, and half her ear had been sliced or chewed off by a dog.” Amanda said her son Riley (8), and daughter Stevie (2), were overjoyed at Baby Girl’s return, despite

their beloved goat being left traumatised. “She’s a bit timid at the moment and in a bit of a bad way, but the kids are happy. “Riley is stoked. He was running up and down the road calling for her when she was gone. “We are all very glad. We did think the worst.” Amanda told the Sun Baby Girl was one of seven goats stolen from Linkwater on the same day. She now wants to thank everyone who helped, including the bus driver and two Sun readers - one who phoned up with information and another who offered the Boothmans their own pet goat if Baby Girl wasn’t found. “There are some really great people in this community,” Amanda said.

Dear Ed, I watch with dismay the deceit and manipulation by John Key (Mr Mumbles? Mr Brain Fade?) and this government. The GCSB bill, the Dunne U turns, the spying on Andrea Vance and so on. Blenheim Toyota Mums have the breast idea By Kristy Martin More than 50 mums gathered in Blenheim to simultaneously breastfeed their babies during the Big Latch On. The event, held at the Clubs of Marlborough last Friday, saw a record 53 babies feeding together as part of a community demonstration of support for breastfeeding. The Latch On is an annual nationwide event held during World Breastfeeding Week and this year’s local organisers included Plunket, the Primary Health Organisation and the DHB. Heather Sorensen, community coordinator for Plunket Marlborough, said attendee numbers were growing each year. “We’d like to thank everyone for participating,” she said. “It really is a whole community event.” Attending were younger and older mothers, first-timers, mums with twins and those with pre-term babies, but they had all come together to support each other and break down the barri-

ers women can face when it comes to breastfeeding. First-time mum Hannah Foster, who participated with son Josiah, 11 months, said she knew many young mothers who didn’t breastfeed. “It’s such a natural thing, so it’s great to see so many mums here,” she said. Olivia Doonan has participated in the Big Latch On for three years, the latest with her two-week-old son Manawa. “It’s great to promote the positive aspects of breastfeeding and events like this help make it more acceptable for us to do it out in the open,” Ms Doonan said. The Ministry of Health says breastfeeding provides babies with optimum nutrition, protects against disease and assists with physical and emotional development. Ms Sorensen said it was important to also acknowledge the local restaurant and café owners helping to make public breastfeeding more acceptable.

Local pop band reaches new heights Formerly ‘Recommended By Your Mom’, Marlborough pop band Little Oceans has gone from strength to strength since securing a world-wide release deal for their first album in 2011. They share their success with the Sun Newspaper. Little Oceans, made up of band members, Matt Johnston, Josh Edmonds and Sam Edmonds has just released two singles, both accompanied by professionally produced music videos, onto the New Zealand market. This has been an exciting step for the trio who grew up together in the Marlborough Sounds, and have been performing their original music together since leaving Queen Charlotte College in 2009 and studying Contemporary Music at NMIT in Nelson. Last September they spent time in their homes at Moenui, in Pelorus Sound, writing and producing new songs for a debut Little Oceans album. Two songs were awarded NZ on Air grants worth $20,000 for studio recording and the production of high quality music videos. This is the monthly selection of NZ songs that are given to all radio networks and music institutes. Josh says, “Having the song on the Kiwi Hit Disc guarantees that it will be played on radio stations throughout the country. “Having the NZ On Air support really gives us some serious traction in the music industry. “This is just a beginning, as we are already finishing off several follow-up singles, not to mention a whole lot of other songs that are still in production.”

Resilient kids bounce back after quakes

Acting principal of Seddon School Nick Raynor says there has been very little damage to the school, despite numerous earthquakes.

By Kristy Martin Staff at the Seddon School are doing all they can to ensure students’ routines are not disrupted, despite the threat of further earthquakes. Acting principal Nick Raynor said the school’s emergency procedures had been reviewed in the wake of the 6.5 magnitude quake that rocked the region on July 21. “All the staff came in to review the procedures and talk about how we are going to support the kids,” he said. “We are the centre of the com-

munity for a lot of people so the school staff have taken on that responsibility of keeping a routine, keeping everyone calm.” But despite the countless quakes and aftershocks in recent weeks, including daytime tremors, the 127 students were proving resilient. “They have been coping really well considering what many of them have been through. “We are talking about sleepless nights but there has been no acting up, no behaviour or stress issues at the school.

“They are resilient and we don’t wrap them in cotton wool.” Mr Raynor said the school had suffered very little damage, but staff had elected to have a chimney removed as a precaution. However, he had heard of some houses with collapsed chimneys and interior walls cracked. “I have not heard of anyone who has had to move out, some have done so by choice and gone to stay with friends or family, so there is a bit of stress around because it is something we have no control over.”

Tussock run open to all Last year's Seddon School Tussock Run was the first of its kind and a "fantastic success". This run/walk event is again approaching with the date set for Sunday, August 25 and organisers are still accepting entries. The Tussock Run has three course options, a five km run/ walk, a 10.5km run/walk and a 15km run/walk. Each of the courses begin at Seddon School. The 5km (approximate) is an enjoyable loop, and is perfect for family groups, beginners or children while their parents are completing a longer event.

The quarter marathon (10 .5 km) initially follows Marama Rd south of Seddon before heading to the Vineyard covered river terraces. Participants can enjoy the stunning views of the Awatere River Valley as they wind their way back towards Seddon Township. This is an achievable distance for most people or the perfect challenge for beginners. For the 15km course participants head along Marama Road for approximately 1.5km before heading up the mighty Star Hill. From the trig at the top of Star Hill, participants will experience

the breathtaking 360 degree panoramic views of the Awatere Valley, Cape Campbell and Mt Tapuaenuku. The course then goes across farmland before joining the 10.5km course on the Awatere River Terraces, then winds through the vineyards on the banks of the river to finish at Seddon School. There are four categories, adult, secondary school student, primary school student and family, so for more information about prices and to enter, visit www. tussockrun.co.nz

The Awatere Memorial Hall in Seddon has been closed due to earthquake damage.

750 quake damage claims for South Island EQCover Insurance says it has received 2756 damage claims, with 752 from the South Island, as a result of earthquakes on July 19 and 21. The worst of Seddon’s quake damage includes collapsed chimneys, cracked walls and the closure of the Awatere Memorial Hall. One local family told the Sun their chimney had fallen down, while business owners in town

said most affected people were back on their feet by now. Residents who suffered damage from the 6.5 magnitude quake have until October 21 to lodge a claim and are being urged to keep their damaged items until assessors arrive to conduct inspections. “We are mobilising assessors to inspect earthquake damage, including damaged contents,” said Bruce Emson, Earthquake Commission customer services

general manager. “You automatically have EQCover if you have taken out current private insurance policy for your home and contents that includes fire insurance. “If it’s necessary to take action to make your home safe, secure and sanitary, keep records and photographs of the changes.” Claims can be made online at eqc.govt.nz/claims or by calling 0800 DAMAGE.

the Kids say t darndes things...

My seven year old daughter was writing some ‘pretend’ invitations and when I asked her what they were for, she said they were “for my teenage party”. I asked her; “Should I be worried?”, thinking a teenage party is a bit soon lol. She replied; “No Mum I have it under control”. I laughed this time, I might not though when she is 15!

Addiction counsellor uses experience to ‘give back’ Paul Hathaway completed his 12 month placement at St Marks Addiction Residential Treatment Centre on June 30 and has subsequently been offered employment as a Counsellor. Paul accepted the position as “he wanted to give back”, and he is well on the way to achieving his goal. "We are very pleased to have him on board as part of the St Marks team. We gave thanks to Te Rau Matatini for helping to make this possible for Paul and others and we recognise the wonderful opportunity the Hoe Rua Workbased Programme offers people wanting to enter the addiction field," Manager Lois Millar said. A hakari was held at St Marks on July 15 in recognition of Paul’s hard work, dedication and achievement in his studies. "We had our Kaumatua bless the buildings here at St Marks which added special meaning to this occasion. As guest of honour Paul wore the St Marks Korowai," Lois said. Lois, guests, staff and clients gave Paul great feedback and he in turn acknowledged and thanked each and every one for all their support and encouragement. "Paul has come a long way on his journey and we are all very proud of him," Lois said.

Kart club day attracts many Marlborough Kart Club held its third round of club points last Sunday and the increase in specatators was pleasing to the club committee. “We are encouraging people to come along and meet our drivers, find out more about karting and even have a go in one of our karts. “We had plenty of people along to watch and had some kids come and have a go which was fantastic,” said club president Shaun Forbes. The next meeting will be held September 7 which will be the club’s Enduro event. “This is open to the public and if you are interested in finding out more we are more than happy to show you around,” he said.

Brendon Pongia and Jules Watts (Blenheim) arrive in Picton on Monday. Photo provided

Cycling for a cause The Red Nose Day Relay flew into Picton on Monday this week. Not literally, but fast for all that. Former Tall Black, Iron Man participant and media celebrity Brendon Pongia was accompanied by prominent local cyclist Jules Watts as they cycled for child health under the banner ‘Good Sports Cure Kids’. They were part of the national Bluff to Cape Reinga cycle relay being held to raise research funds for, and awareness of, the Cure Kids charity. Last year’s campaign raised $1.3m. There are two different teams operating. Brendon is doing the serious relay, which includes All Blacks and other top sportspeople like Jules who link in at various stages. A second group of media celebrities and comedians, linked mainly around Jono (Pryor) and Ben (Boyce) at 10 will do whatever they need to get to Cape Reinga on Sunday. Brendon has anchored the sporting team since they left Bluff on August 2, his first time on a bike for three years he said.

Most of Brendon’s two-hour legs have been in the dead of night, when no one else is volunteering. His only accident had occurred at about 1am on one of those legs just out of Balclutha, on a hill. He was in the wrong gear going up the hill and tried to flick the clip as he rode along. “I came off, but fortunately no one was watching. Only a possum!” he said. Brendon has had several years association with Cure Kids, he became involved with the Ticket To Hope scheme, at which stage he gave the 25-30 children his mobile number. “They’ve kept texting me ever since then.” That had made him aware of their needs, and their family’s needs. Any discomfort he felt was, he said, “nothing” compared to what they and their families were going through. The Comedy for Cure Kids, Good Sports event will show on TV3 on Friday August 23 at 7.30pm.
