Mayoralty battle looms Mayor Alistair Sowman

Jamie Arbuckle

By Kristy Martin Jamie Arbuckle believes his three years’ experience as a councillor has given him the edge he needs to topple long-time Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman. Throwing his hat into the ring yesterday, Mr Arbuckle declared he will once again stand for mayor and council, as he did in the last Local Body Elections. “People told me last time they would not vote for me because I had no experience,” he told the Sun. “I’m confident I will poll well.”

Richard Feather

Mr Arbuckle, now 33, surprised everybody back in 2010 by becoming the highest polling candidate and the youngest member of Marlborough District Council. Even he admits he had “no idea” what he was doing back then, but says he was forced to learn the ropes, and fast. “I was talking about issues I had no idea about, but I now have three years of experience and I know that there is a process and that you’ve got to take the other councillors with you on an issue. “It is a team game.” Continued page 3

Ready for another term This is the twelfth of a series of interviews with sitting MDC councillors. “Yes, I’m standing again,” says Marlborough Sounds Ward councillor Trevor Hook. He was one of the eight new councillors who swept into the MDC in the last election and he says it was both a challenging and rewarding time. It was, he said, challenging to learn about how the organisation worked in terms of its structures processes and procedure. “And rewarding, especially working with the staff who are so dedicated, knowledgeable and professional.” For a first timer, his responsibilities have been considerable, focussing on areas of economic development as well as the needs of his ward. The deputy chair of the environmental

committee, he has also chaired the Sounds Advisory Group, and shared chairing the Picton Forum with fellow Sounds councillor David Oddie. He’s also particularly enjoyed his role with the ‘Smart and Connected’ programme. “I felt privileged to be a part of that,” he said. The job is, he says, time consuming. “But the business Jan and I run here in the Sounds, Te Mahia, is now established and still growing.” He is also chair of the Board of Trustees of Queen Charlotte College. Time management is, he says, the key. “And they do say that if you want something done, you ask a busy person.” Despite the Hook’s own suc-

cessful business background, some might find his focus on business surprising given a masters degree in environmental management, his training as a guidance counsellor, 12 years as a teacher and six years working for DOC on Mana Island. “It’s about looking at balance, including environmental and social aspects.” The early difficult days of the new council, when allegations

of corruption surfaced, followed by an independent enquiry, he said he just focussed on listening and learning. However, looking back he said, it was healthy. “There’s nothing wrong with debate.” Concerns about lack of gender representation and councillors’ ages he says, are not important. “It’s about ability, passion and the desire for the good of the region. The rest doesn’t matter.”

Vineyard worker charged over CBD assault Police have charged a vineyard worker for the serious assault of a 44-year-old man who was found unconscious in Blenheim last month. The injured man was located on a Queen St footpath about 7am on July 28.He had suffered serious wounds to the head. But this week Marlborough Police arrested and charged a 25-year-old vineyard worker for wounding with intent and aggravated robbery.

Police said the arrest was the result of an extensive investigation involving staff from both the General Duties Branch and the Criminal Investigation Branch. The investigation had been greatly assisted with the use of the CCTV system in the Blenheim CBD, information from the public and assistance from the media, they said. The injured man remains in Wairau Hospital with serious injuries, including

brain damage. He is yet to be formally interviewed by police. Detectives and uniformed police executed a search warrant late on Tuesday, which lead to the 25-year-old’s arrest and they also seized a number of items for forensic testing. The vineyard worker was due to appear in the Blenheim District Court on Wednesday for his first appearance. Police said the investigation was ongoing.

Mayoral candidates begin campaigning Continued from page 1 “That being said, I’ve learnt to still voice my opinion, even if I am the only one, because at the end of the day I am there to represent my constituents.” His time in office has been controversial, particularly when he raised allegations of corruption, which led to the release of the Sheard report. But he refused to stand down, even after other councillors suggested he do so. Mr Arbuckle is joined by Fairhall farmer Richard Feather in the mayoral race. Mr Feather, who says he nominated early to encourage others to do the same, is keen to stamp out rates rises and says he would save money in other areas, such as “stopping all court action and going back to mediation.” The 59-year-old is outspoken on a num-

ber of controversial issues, particularly the Blenheim theatre development and the King Salmon expansion. “I would find a way for King Salmon to extend their operation to bring employment to the area,” Mr Feather said. “This I consider progress. “And I want people to know that I do not support the theatre – wrong place, wrong time.” He says he doesn’t care if these issues cost him votes. Mayor Alistair Sowman has welcomed the competition. But, he says, his experience and proven track record will stand him in good stead. “We need sound, sensible and experienced leadership,” he said. “I have demonstrated that I can lead council, and lead a stable council, and that is the most important thing.”

Concert to aid broadway dream By Kristy Martin Being accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London is a dream come true for Bridget Costello, who aims to one day perform on broadway. The Auckland singer, whose strong family ties to Blenheim make it her “second home”, is hoping to raise money for her tuition fees and living costs, so she will be performing a concert at St Andrews church on August 25. Bridget’s one year Postgraduate Diploma in Musical Theatre begins next month, but she will also have evening and weekend rehearsals, making it impossible for her to work.

“I am the fourth New Zealander in 20 years to be accepted on this course and one of 15 females selected for the 2013-14 intake,” Bridget explained. “I’m so excited. I went over last December to audition and stayed there for three months. “I just fell in love with London, so I’m really excited to get back there.” Bridget, 23, began ballet dancing at three and took up singing lessons at 10. She is trained in opera and classical singing and completed a Bachelor of Music at the New Zealand School of Music. A keen dancer as well, musical

Police have taken fingerprints from three cars that were broken into on McLauchlan St. Car stereo speakers, a sub woofer and wallets were stolen during the raids, overnight on August 5. One of the vehicles had been left unlocked, while the offender forced their way into the other two. Police are now awaiting the fingerprint results.

Swamp Thing Southern Tour Rotorua based Swamp Thing are heading on their first Southern Tour for August 2013. Now is your chance to see them this Saturday August 10 at 8pm at the Dharma Burns Club in the Wairau Valley, Blenheim. Michael Barker (drums, percussion, key bass, vocals), a former member of the John Butler Trio and touring drummer for Tim Finn and Split Enz, formed the power blues/roots duo Swamp Thing with Grant Haua (vocals, guitar) in 2010. These two unique musicians share a wealth of experience to craft blues flavoured music with a deep groove and soulful spook.

theatre was the obvious next step. After a recent sellout show in Auckland, Bridget is looking forward to returning to Blenheim to demonstrate her vocal range. She will perform opera and classical songs, as well as showtunes, hoping to provide something for

everyone. Bridget will be supported by local performers Elin Tomos, Olivia Sheat and Hadley Anderson and accompanied by Marsha Stringer. The concert is on August 25 from 2pm. Tickets cost $15 and are only available at the door.

Trains will remain on speed restrictions, says a Kiwirail spokesperson, after a slip caused a freight train to detail just south of Kekerengu on Saturday afternoon. The slip contained large boulders, some of which rolled over the tracks and came to rest on the embankment between SH1 and the train tracks. Kiwirail were bringing in geotechnical specialists during the week to review the site.

Consent for MOA

Moa Brewing Company’s $7 million expansion of its Jacksons Rd brewery has secured resource consent. Moa founder Josh Scott, of Blenheim said he was pleased to finally gain consent after many months working through the process. “It’s a really good result, it’s great for Marlborough and another string on the bow for Blenheim,” he said. However, they were not rushing into the work straight away, with a 15-day window for submitters to appeal the decision.

By Kristy Martin The finishing touches are being implemented at the new Speight’s Ale House, which is set to open next month. Owner John Derry said it was full steam ahead at the highly-anticipated bar and restaurant, located on Middle Renwick Rd at Springlands. Mr Derry said he had already hired 35 staff members and will be beginning “trial runs” in the restaurant’s

kitchen from next week. So far, the bar area has been constructed, the stainless steel kitchen complete and stone workers have installed two fireplaces. Painting is still going on at the site, as well as the paving of a rear carpark. “It’s been a long process for us but we are starting to get excited,” Mr Derry said. “It’s going to be open in early September.”

Golfer’s World owners seek new location By Kristy Martin This is the last weekend kids will get to ride the motocross track at Golfer’s World, which is closing down to make way for a vineyard. Owners Jo Higgins and Michael Fairhall said many in the community were devastated by the news Blenheim’s mini golf, driving range and paintball target centre would close. “A lot of people are gutted that we are closing down, but we are looking for about five acres of land so that we can relocate,” Ms Higgins said. “There is nowhere else in town kids can go to for mini golf and paintball target shooting Jo Higgins says Golfer’s World will so it is a loss for the community.” close in 6 weeks to make way for a The motocross track is first patch of land to be cleared to make way for the grapes, but vineyard.

Ms Higgins wanted to stress that the business would remain open for a further six weeks. “We’ve already closed the golf course and the motocross track will go next week, but we want people to know we are still open.” The land, on SH1 south of Blenheim, was sold back in May, which was unfortunate for Ms Higgins and her partner who have been there for five years. “We own the business but not the land unfortunately. “But it is not the new owners' fault. They have been great and very helpful. “We are hoping council has some land available and we are just waiting to hear back from them. "We've got our fingers crossed."

have already spoilt. I would consider that it would be far more sensible, to go East, following on along the foothills of the Wither Hills livening up a very dry area. (and being much closer to the sewage treatment). K O Lawrence Secretary Marlborough Concerned Citizens Inc.

Kids in kapa haka comp By Kristy Martin Five Blenheim schools will battle it out at the “Te Huinga Whet?” regional kapa haka competitions next week. Kapa haka is traditional Maori song and dance, which, according to the event’s organisers, teaches children co-ordination and discipline, as well as team work. “It’s all about choreography and how fluent they are,” said Nan Chadwick of Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui Culture Council, who is running the event. “There will be about 14 teams in total, intermediates down to primary school.” Although a regular event, the kapa haka competition has not been held in Blenheim for more than a decade so the local community is buzzing with excitement. “We haven’t had it here for about 12 years,” Ms Chadwick said. “We called for it to come back

because it was flourishing here and the kids really enjoyed it.” Local schools, including Redwoodtown, have been practising their dances since the start of the year. “Te Huinga Whet?” will be held at the Marlborough Boys College next Friday August 16 Doors open at 8.30am and tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for students under 16 and $25 for families.

Jewellers host silent charity auction Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk “Bag yourself a bargain”. Lovers of fine jewellery love hearing these words, especially when stores like McCor m ick and Co offer a silent auction on a range of stunning jewellery. The auction will be run from Wednesd ay, Aug ust 14 through to Saturday, August 17 in which time people can place their bids instore. Owner

Pam McCormick said the silent auction was a fun way to raise money for Hospice Marlborough and will be offering over 100 pieces for people to “choose their price”. Amongst the auction items will be diamond rings, coloured stones, bracelets, necklaces plus much more. As of today the auction items will be able to be viewed and bidding cards can be purchased for $5 prior to it starting. Proceeds from the bidding cards and 10% of every item sold all go to Hospice Marlborough. “We are very fortunate to have a hospice, especially one of this calibre so we are proud to support it,” Pam said.

Cupcake bakers sought

SPCA Marlborough office manager Kate Horrey

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk What do free range eggs and the SPCA have in common? Cupcakes! The SPCA Marlborough is hosting its annual Cupcake Day fundraiser on August 26 and staff are encouraging the community to get on board and bake their own. The SPCA is also promoting the use of free range eggs in cupcake recipes. “We are hoping all the cupcake bakers in Marlborough will bake their own, sell them to friends, family and work colleagues and donate the

proceeds to SPCA,” SPCA Marlborough office manager Kate Horrey said. This is a major fundraising event for the SPCA and money raised in Marlborough stays here. In a week’s time SPCA Marlborough will also have an order form online where people can order ‘work shout’ cupcakes and have them delivered. “It’s a fun way to show your support to the animals in our region which need your help, so please support us by participating and help raise funds for SPCA Marlborough,” Kate said.

Wine conference returns Regional director The largest wine industry conference in New Zealand, Romeo Bragato, will return to Blenheim later this month. The success of the event last year led the New Zealand Winegrowers Association to decide to bring the conference back to the Marlborough Convention Centre. The event will run from August 2830 and features wine tastings, mot ivat iona l speakers and the annual wine awa r d s c e remony.

Gardening Tips

August garden tips and tasks

Double your money with Canterbury bells Canterbury bells, these musical bi-annual plants are perfect for planting with delphiniums, hollyhocks and snapdragons around borders and fences. The reason being, they all grow quite tall, to about 70cm high, so work well at filling up the ‘background’ where they add some height but won’t overshadow smaller plants. The fence or border will also help support your Canterbury

bells as they grow taller, otherwise you may need to stake them. Rose or cottage looking garden beds are also a good place to grow these violet, pink and purple plants because they like the same conditions – nice and sunny. When you’ve picked the perfect spot to plant, dig in a little compost and a well-balanced fertiliser like nitrophoska blue. This will help give your seedlings the right nutrition for a good kick-start.

• Vegetables: Make sure the garden is ready to be planted by adding compost and peat. Sprouted potatoes can be planted out later this month once the ground temperature has warmed up. Plant out Cabbages, Cauliflower, Broccoli. Make sure to put Slug bait down, if you have animals in your home use Quash. • Lawn Care: Start fertilising the lawn, making sure to water well if using a general lawn fertiliser and treat for Moss by using Iron Sulphate. Keep an eye out for puddle spots and plan to put in some irrigation in the warmer months. • Organic Gardening: Organic Sheep Pellets are made from pelletised sheep manure and wool waste. As well as being a gentle source of nutrients, the pellets make an excellent soil conditioner. They improve moisture retention and, like most other organic matter, they help to aerate the soil. Turn over your compost now and add some moisture if the pile is dry. Cover with plastic or pea straw to maintain the heat. Rake up the least of the winter leaves and place in large rubbish bags, sprinkle with water and leave to rot. Next season you will have a wonderful composted leaf mulch.

Then plant your seedlings around 20cm apart from each other and spread some mulch and pea straw around. Watch out for slugs, they can be fans of these pretty flowers. Because they grow quite tall, Canterbury bells take a while to mature. You should see them start to flower in around early summer or Christmas time.

Mozart mastery comes to Blenheim We have all heard of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart but what makes his music so magnificent? The NZSO invites you to uncover the mastery of Mozart in a mini festival featuring three heart-felt, recognisable gems by the great master. Blenheim will be hosting this event next Tuesday, August 16 at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre from 7:30pm and it will feature three of Mozart's most exquisite masterworks; "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) Overture K 384, Sinfonia Concertante in Eb major K 364 and Symphony No.40 in G minor K 550". Leading the NZSO through this memorable concert is American conductor Andrew Grams, while two of the NZSO’s string stars, Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen and Section Principal Viola Julia Joyce, take centre stage in this impressive work as they trade melodies with each other,

exploring the available colours of their instruments as they soar above the Orchestra. “The Sinfonia Concertante is a wonderful work,” says Joyce. “It’s filled with energy and fun, as well as deep emotion in the slow movement. The Orchestra not only acts as an accompaniment but as a symphonic ensemble in its own right, and the two soloists have a great deal of conversational writing exploring both the violin and the viola's unique attributes.” Julia Joyce’s premiere solo performance with the NZSO is highly anticipated. She was appointed Section Principal Viola in 2011 – soon after her husband, Andrew Joyce, was appointed NZSO Section Principal Cello. Do not miss out on this memorable concert, get your tickets today!

Mayor and new Police Commander get tough on crime Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman has welcomed the tough approach to street crime promised by the region’s new Police Commander, Inspector Simon Feltham. The pair met for the first time this week and Mr Sowman said he felt reassured that the police chief appreciated the community concerns about safety, especially in the CBD area late at night following a spate of recent assaults. “We have had a string of incidents in recent months but they do seem to be random assaults. “However alcohol is a common factor and everyone needs to know that police will be enforcing our CBD liquor ban,” Mr Sowman. “It means people cannot carry or consume liquor on the central streets of Blenheim

or Picton and I am happy if police take a tough approach in policing that ban.” “I a m deter m ined that Blenheim is not going to earn a reputation as a town that is dangerous after dark.” Mr Sowman also stressed that he would not stand for gangs in this community. “Don’t be under any illusion – gangs are involved in organised crime and it is naïve to think otherwise. “Gang activity is completely unacceptable to me.” Mr Sowman said the public could be reassured by the fact that Marlborough’s crime statistics were improving and the local police have a high success rate when it came to solving crimes. Footage f rom councilinstalled security cameras

in downtown Blenheim and Picton had proven useful in identifying assailants and witnesses to street crime, the Mayor said. However the broader community also needed to step up, he said. “People have to take responsibility for their own behaviour with alcohol. We also know there are social problems with young people in particular drinking heavily and that’s an issue for families to face up to,”Mr Sowman said. “And we need people to be willing to come forward and speak to police when incidents occur.” The Mayor said he was committed to working with the new Police Commander to address crime and its causes, particularly alcohol issues.

Mayor Alistair Sowman and new Police Commander Simon Feltham have vowed to get tough on street crime.

Police operation targets speeding drivers Speeding drivers will be targeted by police during a week-long operation aimed at reducing road trauma. Marlborough Police will be closely monitoring the SH 1 between Picton and Kaikoura, a stretch of highway with a history of serious crashes. In the past five years there have been 11 fatalities and 68 people seriously injured in crashes on that road.

A further 263 people have suffered minor injuries after being involved in crashes in the area. The NZTA estimates the social cost of those crashes at $118.8 million. Marlborough Area Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said speeding drivers had been identified as a major risk on the highway with drivers frequently travelling well in excess of the

Retirement for NZ soccer keeper All Whites goalkeeper Mark Paston announced his retirement from international football after a few months of evaluating his situation. “Since retiring from the Phoenix I haven’t really missed playing football and that was a pretty good sign that it was time to move on,” said Paston.

sports talk

Gold rush on again Some of this country’s top athletes will be looking to add to their trophy cabinets in the next few days and weeks - and two in particular. This weekend the formidable Valerie Adams will be endeavouring to win her fourth shot putting gold medal at the IAAF world championships in Moscow to add to her two Olympic golds. Then, later this month Mahe Drysdale, the reigning Olympic champion, will be on Tangeum Lake in South Korea vying for his sixth world championship sculling gold medal. It’s easy to get blase about these two athletes and take their remarkable achievements for granted. Perhaps only when they come to retire, will the New Zealand public

come to understand the enormity of their achievements. Athletics especially has to be grateful to Adams. Her long reign as the best in the world has helped ensure a steady flow of funding into her sport. The only other top performer of note for athletics in recent years has been 1500m runner Nick Willis. His feats too have ensured athletics gets a fair slice of the cake when the funding is dished out, but he is American-domiciled and has not scaled the heights of big Val. The good news for athletics is that Adams should be around for a long time to come. The reality of sport these days is that if you don’t produce champions, you won’t get government funding

- meaning you’ll have to get the begging bowl out. Having said this, Swimming NZ will be a whole lot happier given the wonderful performances of Lauren Boyle at the world championships in Barcelona this past week. The sport has been in the doldrums in recent years and after dismal efforts at the London Olympics last year, they had their funding slashed. But Boyle’s three bronzes will inject a bit of life into swimming and perhaps a few more dollars will start flowing their way. Also scheduled for this month is the David Tua-Alexander Ustinov heavyweight boxing fight in Hamilton. It’s being billed as the David and Goliath Show. Things are not progressing well

Daniel aims high in Rotax Challenge

By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim teenager Daniel Bugler (16) has followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and is showing promise in the world of motorsport. Daniel is a member of the Marlborough Kart Club and is currently competing in the Rotax Max Challenge, which has seen him travel throughout New Zealand this year to take part in six rounds. Next weekend Daniel, his father Paul and grandfather John will go to Hawke's Bay for the fourth round, then Auckland a month later for the final round. The winner of Daniel's class, Rotax Junior will have the opportunity to compete in the World Championships in New Orleans, America. "This is an all expenses paid trip where they provide everything, including the kart," Paul said. "This is Daniel's second year competiting in the Rotax Max Challenge, last year he placed 10th overall and to date he is sitting at around 11th. "It's all a learning curve for him and the more experience the better, but he has been working very hard toward this challenge," he said. Karting is only one of Daniel's passions, he is an all round sports fan and plays football for the Junior Rangers, Senior

Trojans, he mountain bikes for Marlborough Boys' College and plays cricket for Wairau. "He is very fit and sports orientated, though our family is much the same," said Paul who himself competed in rally motorsport. "Overall he gains a lot from karting as he has a great bunch of friends throughout NZ, all the drivers are good kids and it gives Daniel many of the necessary skills for driving on the road. "We are very proud of Daniel," Paul said.

Ministocks open to youth Sunday By Celeste Lodewyk Eastern States Speedway has long promoted its club to youth as an introduction to motorsport. One class in particular 'youth ministocks' will be going on show this Sunday at the speedway track from 1pm - 3pm for anyone interested in finding out more and pre-enrolling to join. Youth ministocks is a class for 12-16 year olds and has been a great stepping stone in New Zealand speedway for some time. Organising this event is Eastern States Speedway committee member David Rennie who had years of experience pit crewing and supporting his wife who herself raced a ministock. "Sunday is about having a look at the car and safety equipment and

talking to representatives from the club about racing and becoming involved in speedway. Once enrolled, the youth train through a programme in the form of bookwork learning car setup and safety before hitting the track. "I believe the introduction of youth to motorsport is so important as it's a bigger step these days straight into a full blown racecar, so ministocks are the perfect machines," he said. Ministocks have a simple construction, are reasonably priced and able to be maintained with a small amount of mechanical knowledge, David said. "Adults can use the same cars as we have seen last summer when both classes often raced on the same night."

Chris Tobin for the fight. Tua has picked up a calf injury. And it was staggering to learn when the giant Russian stepped off his plane that he hadn’t started training for the fight yet. (It’s three weeks away). Perhaps something got lost in translation there since Ustinov has a record of 28 wins in 29 fights. He doesn’t look a pushover. If the fight goes ahead, maybe we’ll have a new story: Goliath beating David.

Peter Ray take gold... L

ocal home builders are helping to put Blenheim on the real estate map, taking out prestigious gold awards in the Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year competition. Rowan and Donna Lee from Peter Ray Homes took gold in the New Homes $250k-300k category for a unique property they built for local couple Tim and Anna Gifford. The Lees proved they are a force to be reckoned with by also securing a bronze award for New Homes between $350k-400k. Rowan Lee said Marlborough builders had done extremely well in the nation’s top building competition, considering the high calibre of entries. Donna Lee with Tim & Anna Gifford.

lenheim couple Tracy Taylor and Peter Sutherland had a firm idea of how they wanted their home built, so they were pleased when Peter Ray Homes worked closely with them to deliver what they wanted. “This was the first time Peter and I had built together so we had a big list of ‘must haves’ and wanted to be involved in every stage of the build. “Rowan met with us regularly, sometimes in the evenings and went over everything in detail. He took us through showhomes to see how our ideas would look and when our build started he encouraged us to visit the site. “When we did the tradesmen would put down their tools to show us around and

outhlanders Judy and Trevor Grey moved to Blenheim early 2012 to be close to family. Judy says moving to Blenheim and building their first home was beyond their wildest dream for these retirees. “We looked at showhomes in Invercargill, but didn’t see the right plan for us. So Trevor decided to draw our own plans. “We contacted Rowan at Peter Ray Homes. He drew the plans to the right specs, and presto we had our plans back in three days and made the decision to go with it. “The reason other plans didn’t feel right was because of the unusual shape of our section in Blenheim. “Now house and section complement each other. Judy says the entire process was easy. Judy has previously worked for a kitchen consultant, so

etirees Judith and Allan Hutton weren’t considering building a new home, until they looked at an established Peter Ray Home built some years ago. They liked the home, says Judith, especially the living areas, but it was a bedroom short. So they decided to phone Peter Ray Homes. They spoke with Donna Lee. Donna owns Peter Ray Homes with her husband Rowan. Right from their very first meeting with Donna everything went smoothly. The thought of building was easy because her husband Allan was a builder, although “he was going to watch every nail,” she joked. There was no need to worry. Donna and Rowan had

she was particular about the kitchen. But there were no hassles. “The subbies that worked on our house were excellent and we had no problems. We visited most days while they built our home and we felt welcomed. Both Judy and Trevor agree building a new house with Peter Ray Homes is excellent value for money. They built a 4 bedroom home 235sq and they are very happy with the finished product. “It’s easy” says Judy. They also installed solar power water heating. Trevor cannot understand why more homes in Blenheim haven’t considered this option when building, with the amount of sunshine hours we have here. It is so very cost effective when building and saves on the power bill.

talk us through everything, so throughout there were no surprises, everything was done to how we wanted it to be,” Tracy said. Rowan told Tracy and Peter the build would take approximately five months, and it did! “Rowan and his team worked day, night and even weekends to have our home built on time. Everyone who was involved was clearly dedicated to their craft,” Peter said. “People ask us what would we change... to which we reply - nothing! “The trust for Rowan and Peter Ray Homes was there from the start and the whole experience was stressfree and fun,” Tracy said.

everything under control. Allan says today Peter Ray Homes have the buying power and it is so cost effective to build, without compromising on quality. Donna said it would take 16 weeks to build, and that’s exactly how long it took. A plus building with Peter Ray was the helpful advice received from interior designer Simone Hill. “She was extremly efficient and matched our furniture with the new house colours.” Allan commented they had very good builders and being a builder he knows. “The end result, we were totally satisfied Peter Ray did an excellent build for us. We have already recommended Peter Ray homes to friends. We were very pleased.”
