By Kristy Martin Jamie Arbuckle believes his three years’ experience as a councillor has given him the edge he needs to topple long-time Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman. Throwing his hat into the ring yesterday, Mr Arbuckle declared he will once again stand for mayor and council, as he did in the last Local Body Elections. “People told me last time they would not vote for me because I had no experience,” he told the Sun. “I’m confident I will poll well.”

Mr Arbuckle, now 33, surprised everybody back in 2010 by becoming the highest polling candidate and the youngest member of Marlborough District Council. Even he admits he had “no idea” what he was doing back then, but says he was forced to learn the ropes, and fast. “I was talking about issues I had no idea about, but I now have three years of experience and I know that there is a process and that you’ve got to take the other councillors with you on an issue. “It is a team game.” Continued page 3

Ready for another term This is the twelfth of a series of interviews with sitting MDC councillors. “Yes, I’m standing again,” says Marlborough Sounds Ward councillor Trevor Hook. He was one of the eight new councillors who swept into the MDC in the last election and he says it was both a challenging and rewarding time. It was, he said, challenging to learn about how the organisation worked in terms of its structures processes and procedure. “And rewarding, especially working with the staff who are so dedicated, knowledgeable and professional.” For a first timer, his responsibilities have been considerable, focussing on areas of economic development as well as the needs of his ward. The deputy chair of the environmental

committee, he has also chaired the Sounds Advisory Group, and shared chairing the Picton Forum with fellow Sounds councillor David Oddie. He’s also particularly enjoyed his role with the ‘Smart and Connected’ programme. “I felt privileged to be a part of that,” he said. The job is, he says, time consuming. “But the business Jan and I run here in the Sounds, Te Mahia, is now established and still growing.” He is also chair of the Board of Trustees of Queen Charlotte College. Time management is, he says, the key. “And they do say that if you want something done, you ask a busy person.” Despite the Hook’s own suc-

cessful business background, some might find his focus on business surprising given a masters degree in environmental management, his training as a guidance counsellor, 12 years as a teacher and six years working for DOC on Mana Island. “It’s about looking at balance, including environmental and social aspects.” The early difficult days of the new council, when allegations

of corruption surfaced, followed by an independent enquiry, he said he just focussed on listening and learning. However, looking back he said, it was healthy. “There’s nothing wrong with debate.” Concerns about lack of gender representation and councillors’ ages he says, are not important. “It’s about ability, passion and the desire for the good of the region. The rest doesn’t matter.”

Vineyard worker charged over CBD assault Police have charged a vineyard worker for the serious assault of a 44-year-old man who was found unconscious in Blenheim last month. The injured man was located on a Queen St footpath about 7am on July 28.He had suffered serious wounds to the head. But this week Marlborough Police arrested and charged a 25-year-old vineyard worker for wounding with intent and aggravated robbery.

Police said the arrest was the result of an extensive investigation involving staff from both the General Duties Branch and the Criminal Investigation Branch. The investigation had been greatly assisted with the use of the CCTV system in the Blenheim CBD, information from the public and assistance from the media, they said. The injured man remains in Wairau Hospital with serious injuries, including

brain damage. He is yet to be formally interviewed by police. Detectives and uniformed police executed a search warrant late on Tuesday, which lead to the 25-year-old’s arrest and they also seized a number of items for forensic testing. The vineyard worker was due to appear in the Blenheim District Court on Wednesday for his first appearance. Police said the investigation was ongoing.

Concert to aid broadway dream By Kristy Martin Being accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London is a dream come true for Bridget Costello, who aims to one day perform on broadway. The Auckland singer, whose strong family ties to Blenheim make it her “second home”, is hoping to raise money for her tuition fees and living costs, so she will be performing a concert at St Andrews church on August 25. Bridget’s one year Postgraduate Diploma in Musical Theatre begins next month, but she will also have evening and weekend rehearsals, making it impossible for her to work.

“I am the fourth New Zealander in 20 years to be accepted on this course and one of 15 females selected for the 2013-14 intake,” Bridget explained. “I’m so excited. I went over last December to audition and stayed there for three months. “I just fell in love with London, so I’m really excited to get back there.” Bridget, 23, began ballet dancing at three and took up singing lessons at 10. She is trained in opera and classical singing and completed a Bachelor of Music at the New Zealand School of Music. A keen dancer as well, musical

One of the vehicles had been left unlocked, while the offender forced their way into the other two. Police are now awaiting the fingerprint results.

Owner John Derry said it was full steam ahead at the highly-anticipated bar and restaurant, located on Middle Renwick Rd at Springlands. Mr Derry said he had already hired 35 staff members and will be beginning “trial runs” in the restaurant’s

kitchen from next week. So far, the bar area has been constructed, the stainless steel kitchen complete and stone workers have installed two fireplaces. Painting is still going on at the site, as well as the paving of a rear carpark. “It’s been a long process for us but we are starting to get excited,” Mr Derry said. “It’s going to be open in early September.”

Kids in kapa haka comp By Kristy Martin Five Blenheim schools will battle it out at the “Te Huinga Whet?” regional kapa haka competitions next week. Kapa haka is traditional Maori song and dance, which, according to the event’s organisers, teaches children co-ordination and discipline, as well as team work. “It’s all about choreography and how fluent they are,” said Nan Chadwick of Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui Culture Council, who is running the event. “There will be about 14 teams in total, intermediates down to primary school.” Although a regular event, the kapa haka competition has not been held in Blenheim for more than a decade so the local community is buzzing with excitement. “We haven’t had it here for about 12 years,” Ms Chadwick said. “We called for it to come back

because it was flourishing here and the kids really enjoyed it.” Local schools, including Redwoodtown, have been practising their dances since the start of the year. “Te Huinga Whet?” will be held at the Marlborough Boys College next Friday August 16 Doors open at 8.30am and tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for students under 16 and $25 for families.

The auction will be run from Wednesd ay, Aug ust 14 through to Saturday, August 17 in which time people can place their bids instore. Owner

Pam McCormick said the silent auction was a fun way to raise money for Hospice Marlborough and will be offering over 100 pieces for people to “choose their price”. Amongst the auction items will be diamond rings, coloured stones, bracelets, necklaces plus much more. As of today the auction items will be able to be viewed and bidding cards can be purchased for $5 prior to it starting. Proceeds from the bidding cards and 10% of every item sold all go to Hospice Marlborough. “We are very fortunate to have a hospice, especially one of this calibre so we are proud to support it,” Pam said.

The SPCA Marlborough is hosting its annual Cupcake Day fundraiser on August 26 and staff are encouraging the community to get on board and bake their own. The SPCA is also promoting the use of free range eggs in cupcake recipes. “We are hoping all the cupcake bakers in Marlborough will bake their own, sell them to friends, family and work colleagues and donate the

proceeds to SPCA,” SPCA Marlborough office manager Kate Horrey said. This is a major fundraising event for the SPCA and money raised in Marlborough stays here. In a week’s time SPCA Marlborough will also have an order form online where people can order ‘work shout’ cupcakes and have them delivered. “It’s a fun way to show your support to the animals in our region which need your help, so please support us by participating and help raise funds for SPCA Marlborough,” Kate said.

Wine conference returns Regional director The largest wine industry conference in New Zealand, Romeo Bragato, will return to Blenheim later this month. The success of the event last year led the New Zealand Winegrowers Association to decide to bring the conference back to the Marlborough Convention Centre. Last year’s conference saw more than 500 winemakers, grape-growers and other industry professionals arrive in town for the three-day event. Marlborough Provincial Rural Women New Zealand is gearing up for their latest community support programme swell. This time, it’s support for the New Zealand-wide prostate cancer campaign called Y Front Up to Prostate Cancer, which is being supported by rural women all over the country. “Prostate cancer is the most common cause of male cancer deaths,” said Jocelyn Cresswell the Wairau branch president, adding that some 3000 New Zealand men were diagnosed every year. There is to be a quiz night at 7.30pm at Clubs of Marlborough on August 20. Teams can enter at $15 a head. The cost for those who go to the dinner at 6.30pm as well will be $30, said Jocelyn. There will also be a silent auction with such major prizes as a hunting trip donated by David Evans Stronvar hunting, including overnight accommodation and guarantees of a red deer and as many pigs and goats as wanted.

Double your money with Canterbury bells Canterbury bells, these musical bi-annual plants are perfect for planting with delphiniums, hollyhocks and snapdragons around borders and fences. The reason being, they all grow quite tall, to about 70cm high, so work well at filling up the ‘background’ where they add some height but won’t overshadow smaller plants. The fence or border will also help support your Canterbury

bells as they grow taller, otherwise you may need to stake them. Rose or cottage looking garden beds are also a good place to grow these violet, pink and purple plants because they like the same conditions – nice and sunny. When you’ve picked the perfect spot to plant, dig in a little compost and a well-balanced fertiliser like nitrophoska blue. This will help give your seedlings the right nutrition for a good kick-start.

• Vegetables: Make sure the garden is ready to be planted by adding compost and peat. Sprouted potatoes can be planted out later this month once the ground temperature has warmed up. Plant out Cabbages, Cauliflower, Broccoli. Make sure to put Slug bait down, if you have animals in your home use Quash. • Lawn Care: Start fertilising the lawn, making sure to water well if using a general lawn fertiliser and treat for Moss by using Iron Sulphate. Keep an eye out for puddle spots and plan to put in some irrigation in the warmer months. • Organic Gardening: Organic Sheep Pellets are made from pelletised sheep manure and wool waste. As well as being a gentle source of nutrients, the pellets make an excellent soil conditioner. They improve moisture retention and, like most other organic matter, they help to aerate the soil. Turn over your compost now and add some moisture if the pile is dry. Cover with plastic or pea straw to maintain the heat. Rake up the least of the winter leaves and place in large rubbish bags, sprinkle with water and leave to rot. Next season you will have a wonderful composted leaf mulch.

Then plant your seedlings around 20cm apart from each other and spread some mulch and pea straw around. Watch out for slugs, they can be fans of these pretty flowers. Because they grow quite tall, Canterbury bells take a while to mature. You should see them start to flower in around early summer or Christmas time.

Leading the NZSO through this memorable concert is American conductor Andrew Grams, while two of the NZSO’s string stars, Concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen and Section Principal Viola Julia Joyce, take centre stage in this impressive work as they trade melodies with each other,

exploring the available colours of their instruments as they soar above the Orchestra. “The Sinfonia Concertante is a wonderful work,” says Joyce. “It’s filled with energy and fun, as well as deep emotion in the slow movement. The Orchestra not only acts as an accompaniment but as a symphonic ensemble in its own right, and the two soloists have a great deal of conversational writing exploring both the violin and the viola's unique attributes.” Julia Joyce’s premiere solo performance with the NZSO is highly anticipated. She was appointed Section Principal Viola in 2011 – soon after her husband, Andrew Joyce, was appointed NZSO Section Principal Cello. Mayor and new Police Commander get tough on crime Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman has welcomed the tough approach to street crime promised by the region’s new Police Commander, Inspector Simon Feltham. The pair met for the first time this week and Mr Sowman said he felt reassured that the police chief appreciated the community concerns about safety, especially in the CBD area late at night following a spate of recent assaults. “We have had a string of incidents in recent months but they do seem to be random assaults. “However alcohol is a common factor and everyone needs to know that police will be enforcing our CBD liquor ban,” Mr Sowman. “It means people cannot carry or consume liquor on the central streets of Blenheim

or Picton and I am happy if police take a tough approach in policing that ban.” “I a m deter m ined that Blenheim is not going to earn a reputation as a town that is dangerous after dark.” Mr Sowman also stressed that he would not stand for gangs in this community. “Don’t be under any illusion – gangs are involved in organised crime and it is naïve to think otherwise. “Gang activity is completely unacceptable to me.” Mr Sowman said the public could be reassured by the fact that Marlborough’s crime statistics were improving and the local police have a high success rate when it came to solving crimes. Footage f rom councilinstalled security cameras

in downtown Blenheim and Picton had proven useful in identifying assailants and witnesses to street crime, the Mayor said. However the broader community also needed to step up, he said. “People have to take responsibility for their own behaviour with alcohol. We also know there are social problems with young people in particular drinking heavily and that’s an issue for families to face up to,”Mr Sowman said. “And we need people to be willing to come forward and speak to police when incidents occur.” The Mayor said he was committed to working with the new Police Commander to address crime and its causes, particularly alcohol issues.

Police operation targets speeding drivers Speeding drivers will be targeted by police during a week-long operation aimed at reducing road trauma. Marlborough Police will be closely monitoring the SH 1 between Picton and Kaikoura, a stretch of highway with a history of serious crashes. In the past five years there have been 11 fatalities and 68 people seriously injured in crashes on that road.

A further 263 people have suffered minor injuries after being involved in crashes in the area. The NZTA estimates the social cost of those crashes at $118.8 million. Marlborough Area Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said speeding drivers had been identified as a major risk on the highway with drivers frequently travelling well in excess of the
