By Kristy Martin Community events will be held across Marlborough today in honour of Daffodil Day. The Cancer Society’s major fundraiser for the year will include a morning of entertainment in the Forum at Blenheim, with kapa haka displays, a pop/rock band, a pipe band, games and sporting activities. The festivities will kick off at 11am. There will also be a community breakfast at the Seabreeze Café in Picton from 7.30am. The Cancer Society Marlborough’s events coordinator Hilary Gill said there would be plenty of events at schools, preschools and rest homes and that people will be able to buy daffodil merchandise at most supermarkets, including those in Renwick, Seddon and Havelock.

Making your vote count Story and photo by Glenise Dreaver Winston Churchill famously described Russia as “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma”. Some Marlborough voters, looking at the Single Transferable Voting System (STV) used in the District Council elections, might feel the same way. MDC is one of an estimated six to eight councils in New Zealand using the system, an alternative to “first past the post”. It allows voters to select their top candidate for any ward, then give a numbered preference for others. With nineteen candidates in the Blenheim Ward, a voter could choose to rank a first preference, then eighteen others in the order they would prefer them. Mike Porter, the council’s democratic services coordinator, says Marlborough District Councillors voted the system in for the 2004 elections and have voted it back each review since then. The number of councils using STV does vary. “Some councils drop out and in each election,” said Mike. It aligns with the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) election, held at the same time. “All health boards are required to use STV,” said Mike. The MDC choice therefore saves voters from having a system with numbers on one side of their form and a tick system on the other. Support Services Manager Dean Heiford said the philosophy behind the choice was that it ensured all votes counted. In a first past the post system, once a candidate had enough votes to get elected, further votes for that candidate were effectively wasted he said. With STV, first preferences are the initial filter, with more weight than a second preference and far more than a tenth for example, so a bare count of the number of preferences does not reflect the full picture. “Just part of the vote is transferred,” said Dean. It means going down to nine decimal places and in the last election, the com-

Dean Heiford and Mike Porter with the latest MDC electoral rolls

puter worked through to the 27th reallocation of votes. “And that takes a huge computer,” said Dean. Electionnz.com in Christchurch processes the votes for the MDC, along with another 30-40 councils around the country, and several DHB’s. The postal results are sent down and scanned in from September 20, when voting begins. “It’s called progressive processing,” said Mike. However, he said, votes were merely recorded not processed as total secrecy was required before the final vote was cast at noon on Saturday October 12. He said the system was protected by several passwords and results were not calculated until voting ends. Last time, the first MDC calculation took 1 minute 25 seconds, said Dean, However, votes coming in at the last minute, or special

votes resulting from such mishaps including dogs eating the voting papers, someone using them to light the fire or changed addresses, or people who turned eighteen just before the election, took longer to be counted. He reminds voters that the vote has to be cast before noon on the final day to be valid. And should you vote to put two candidates at the same ranking, that choice, and all other choices on your paper from then on down are invalidated. You are not required to rank candidates. “ D on’t r a n k them at all if you don’t like them,” said Dean.

Theatre seats up for grabs By Kristy Martin Members of the community are being asked to dig deep and ‘sponsor a seat’ as fundraisers try to generate $2 million for the new ASB Theatre in Blenheim. Businesses, families or individuals can pay anywhere between $1500 and $24,000 to purchase their own seats, complete with personalised plaque, giving them an individual slice of the new multi-million dollar venue. Although the theatre, currently being built next to the Clubs of Marlborough, has been a contentious issue within the community, ASB Civic Theatre Trust fundraising manager Ross Anderson said people were already “clamouring” to sponsor the 700 seats. “There are some people here who are such loyal supporters of the theatre that I know they will jump at the chance to sit in their ‘own’ seat at performances,” said Mr Anderson. “There are a lot of families who want to leave their mark on the region, or sponsor a seat as a way to remember a family member.” The seats come in categories of bronze, silver, gold and platinum which are being sold at $1500, $3000, $5000 and $10,000 per seat. Gold, silver and bronze seats will be available in the lower level auditorium,

while there were also gold and platinum seats in the upper dress circle. Corporate sponsorship is also on offer, with businesses being encouraged to pay $24,000 for a group of four seats. Each sponsor will get prefer-

ential rights to their seat and will be provided with details of upcoming events with a chance to pre-book their own seat before public bookings are open. “Seat sponsorship is an easy way for local businesses to show their support for this important

community project and to be recognised for that support,” Mr Anderson said. He said by generating a further $2 million, the theatre would be able to open debt free.

Bars implement one-way door policy A voluntary move by the owners of Blenheim bars Fairweathers and The Loft to implement a oneway door policy is an extremely positive and responsible move, police have said. Police Marlborough Area Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said police and the council's licensing inspector have been working with licensees on strategies to reduce alcohol-fuelled crime in the Blenheim CBD.

"As a result of our discussions two of the three licence holders who remain open after 1am have agreed to implement a voluntary one-way door policy from 1am." Senior Sergeant Payne said the policy meant that from 1am no further patrons would be allowed to enter the bars, however any patrons already inside an establishment would be free to remain until closing time. The one-way door policy will be

implemented during September allowing a period for educating patrons about the change. It will be fully operational from October 2013. Senior Sergeant Payne said police were delighted with the bar owners' agreement to the policy. "This is a crime prevention initiative that has been used successfully in other parts of the world and we hope will have a positive effect in reducing the number of violent

incidents around Blenheim. What is most encouraging for police is to see those other agencies and business operators being prepared to do their bit to contribute to this prevention strategy." Senior Sergeant Payne said he would be speaking with other licence holders in the coming weeks to encourage them to follow the example being set by these licensees.

A raffle is being run this Saturday and Sunday at New World Supermarket in Blenheim, raising money to purchase crockery for earthquake affected Awatere residents. The raffle is for a trailer load of wood, half of which is being provided by three anonymous men, and the other half by Heagneys Heating & Landscaping. Tickets cost $2 each and the winner will be drawn on Monday. The Warehouse Blenheim store has offered to discount the purchase of crockery while BB Signs has made the signage to promote the raffle.

Attacked and robbed Blenheim Police are seeking information from the public following a robbery in Weld Street on Tuesday August 27. The incident occurred south of Alabama Road about 6.40pm when a 21-year-old man was assaulted and had his cellphone taken. The offender is described as a male Maori or Pacific Islander of solid build who was wearing black clothing. If you have any information please contact Blenheim Police on 03 578 5279. Cecilia explains the benefit of having mobile flooring specialists come direct to your door. “We have over 400 carpet samples in our van to show our clients and an extensive range of vinyl samples as well. This means you don’t have to go through, what

can sometimes be, a confusing experience trying to match a carpet sample to your walls and decor whilst standing in a retail shop. We bring it all to you! “We never rush our clients and you can walk around with the samples in your own home and take your time.” Cecilia and Darryl have accepted that in order to maintain a

high standard of service to both GroutPro and Harrisons Carpet One clients that it is now time to reluctantly put their GroutPro business on the market. “As the GroutPro and Harrisons Carpet One businesses are just so busy, we cannot continue to work both as a husband and wife team, which is how we like to operate”.

Cemetery house Dear Ed, I would like to ask, through the Sun, to the council person in charge of housing why the (Omaka) cemetery house is empty? It seems to me to be a waste of ratepayer money, when they could be getting income off it, like they used to. Neil Wilson Nic Krous, reserves and ameni-

ties officer for the MDC, said that while the house had been let for a number of years, Abel Properties had been unable to find a suitable tenant. There had been a subsequent decision to demolish it, as it needed a number of repairs. As the Omaka cemetery had been reopened, the land has been rezoned as cemetery land.

Hard questions Dear Ed, I would like to share this quote with the public if I may. “Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:28 The definition of “to rule” is “to control, direct, be superior to, govern, have dominion over,

regulate...” Where or when did the word “TO ANNIHILATE” come in? Do we have the FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN in the back of our minds and the centre of our hearts, like we should have? How “well” are we really doing in Beavertown? Maria Boss

Unfriendly welcome Dear Ed, As a tourist, I wish to express my absolute disgust at the inhospitable welcome to Blenheim I received at your visitor information centre. After an overnight flight to New Zealand followed by a five hour bus trip I arrived in Blenheim and went to the info centre to seek help with accommodation arrangements. I selected a brochure for a local backpackers and asked the female staff member if she would mind calling ahead to see if they had a free bed. She told me that “No, they won’t because it is a weekend so they will be fully booked.” So

I asked if she would mind calling another place at which point she blatantly refused, handed me a map and told me to just walk around town and try to find something myself. This was in spite of the fact I was obviously weary and had a large 23kg backpack to carry. I don’t think I need to remind these people that they are often the first point of contact for unassuming tourists like myself, so they might want to rethink their manners. Not a good look for the town. Unwelcome visitor

More fresh faces Dear Ed, I would like to reply in kind to comments made in The Sun by a former Mayor. Particularly his disappointing comments re Jamie Arbuckle. I remind the electors, Jamie gathered the highest number of votes as a councillor (Ward electorate). So to criticise Jamie is to criticise a large part of the electorate who do not share the former Mayors confidence in the old councillors. The Sheard enquiry was supported by 40-50 applica-

tions, what people do not realise many cases are settled in courts to the advantage of the applicants. It was not Jamie who called for the enquiry it was the sitting Mayor. There are many lovely staff competent at their jobs but it only takes a couple of poor decisions by managers to create mistrust. I wish all the new candidates all the best. I personally hope, we see more fresh energetic councillors, not frightened to voice their thoughts. New School

Big America’s Cup support from small Picton firm By Glenise Dreaver From an inconspicuous blue building in Wellington Street Picton, the Naiad team has for twenty years supplied leading edge support boats for the America’s Cup. This year is no exception. One difference however, is that instead of supporting Team New Zealand, they work for their rival, Oracle Team USA. (The Kiwis now have a licensing arrangement with another firm.) By September 7, with perhaps divided loyalties, four of the eight-strong Picton team will be watching the action as guests of the Oracle team, in a prime spot in San Francisco, hopefully on the water. “There’s a lot who supply equipment for the team, but we’ll be getting as close as we can,” said Steve Schmidt, chief designer. They will be watching not just the races, but the four support boats they have designed in action. There are two 10 metre boats with outboards of 250 and 300 hp and two 12.9m chase boats, each powered by two Yanmar diesels of 370hp each. They are designed to get gear – and support staff – on to the yacht on the water whenever it is needed. “That’s quite modest horsepower,” says director John Cowan “But they are faster than you would expect because of clever design. They are the very best of chase boat technology.” Design features include a notched bow and a stepped hull. “And the pontoons are low to the water. That allows them to come alongside the race yacht safely.”

One of the 12.9m Oracle race tenders designed by Naiad. Photo © Oracle Team USA: Guilain Grenier.

It’s a manoeuvre that can be done at speed if necessary, he said. The Naiad boats are built under licence in America, the most viable commercial model nowadays. Their first venture into Americas Cup support, with Team New Zealand in San Diego in 1992, did have boats that were built in New Zealand and, said Steve, they were breaking new ground from the start. “Their size and design enabled gear to be taken to the race yachts while they were sailing. “ A second chase boat was used by TVNZ

– later bought by Coastguard Marlborough and still used in the Sounds. The weather boat designs were also groundbreaking, enabling the team to beat Dennis Connor in his home port. “He thought he knew the area, but our boats got to the mark first each time,” said Steve. “And that was because the Kiwis knew exactly what the wind was doing.” The Naiad team, who also do business on both the east and west coasts of Australia and in China, will be chasing up other business opportunities while they are in the US.

Three of the four-member Naiad team from Picton who will be attending the America’s Cup: Matt Hopping structural design, Steve Schmidt, chief designer, and John Cowan, director. Absent on the day was Ian Chesterman, design engineer.

90th birthday celebrated Margaret Hurley celebrated her ninetieth birthday on Thursday August 29. It was held at the Nativity Church hall. Born Margaret Holderness, originally from Dunedin, she went as a young schoolteacher to Riversdale in Southland where she was quickly “snapped up” by a local farmer. “All the teachers and nurses became farmers’ wives!” She was the mother of seven children when they came to Birch Hill

in Marlborough in 1961, “just when Marlborough started to bloom”. “The ferries, aeroplanes, the road to the West Coast, that all happened then.” She also observed that the arrival of the seven McKenzie children at the Wairau Valley School caused the roll to boom as well. Here she is seen with Nativity Vicar Bob Barnes and Raewyn Parkes, the parish nurse.

Feeding frenzy at Waikawa TIME FOR A MORE OPEN APPROACH. VOTE DAVID LLOYD FOR BLENHEIM WARD.

This pod of dolphins was spotted in Waikawa Bay on Wednesday, in a spectacular display of herding. This is one of the dolphins most common methods of feeding, the pod working as a unit to get a school of fish to curl up into a tight ball. They then take turns to plough through the

centre of the ball at speed, eating all they can in the process. The fish are stunned so they are easier to get. As often happens, gannets were also taking advantage of the opportunity. Photo by Marc Tong.

Podium comes down, theatre goes up By Kristy Martin After weeks of demolition work, the earthquake-prone Podium building in Blenheim’s CBD has been brought down. It won’t be long before construction begins on the new one-storey building, which will become the premises for Number 1 Shoe Warehouse. Project co-ordinator Geoff Dentice said the site, on Market and Wynen streets, was almost completely cleared to make way for construction. He said work was on track and the build was expected to be complete by the end of January 2014. “It will be fantastic for Market Street to have a new building with a strong national tenant

that will generate excellent foot traffic into the centre of town,” Mr Dentice said. Meanwhile, construction of Blenheim’s new $17m ASB Theatre is full steam ahead. “Construction is progressing on programme with the foundation piling having been completed and construction of the concrete basement now underway,” said Tim Smit, project manager. “Conditions on site are good with less groundwater found than expected and the weather this winter has been kind as well.” Mr Smit said work being undertaken this week at the site, located next to the Clubs of Marlborough, included the tying of steel reinforcement for the ground beams. “After these have been poured full of con-

“Massive relief” says FF spokesperson Farmers are hugely relieved that conclusive tests of the Whey Concentrate, WPC80, commissioned by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), have now cleared it of Clostridium botulinum. “This news is a massive relief,” says Dr William Rolleston, Federated Farmers Food Safety spokesperson. “Right now, we urgently need to communicate this news to regulators and to our global markets. “The key message is that New Zealand dairy products are safe to consume and always have been. “Speaking as both a biotechnologist and as a farmer, no biological test can return 100

per cent specificity. “When you are dealing with biological products nothing is absolute. That explains why these tests were presumptive and the recall was precautionary. “There will still be questions to be asked and the various inquiries will show the reasoning and key timing points. “Yet some questions still remain. “For example, should Fonterra have talked to their customers in March, when testing showed a potential issue in the finished product from Hautapu?” He said there was now a good opportunity for the New Zealand industry to accelerate its improvements ahead of the competition.

“This is a chance to enhance the reputation of New Zealand primary food exports by demonstrating how seriously we take quality. “If there is a negative, it is that our competitors have now been given insight and data. We now have the potential loss of intellectual property. “Industry, with the MPI, need to sit down to determine the best way of providing consumer assurance in these situations without compromising intellectual property. “Overall, our key message is that New Zealand milk products, from our farm gates and right throughout processing, continue to rank amongst the safest in the world.

Fonterra on a high A roller-coaster month to forget for Fonterra Cooperative Group looks set to end on a high, with the Cooperative revising its 2013/14 season forecast milk price to $7.80 per kilogram of milksolids (kg/MS). This is up from the $7.50 kg/MS announced late last month. “It has been a hellishly tough month for Fonterra but this revision underlines that the fundamentals of the New Zealand dairy industry remain

strong,” says Willy Leferink, Federated Farmers Dairy chairperson. “New Zealanders should rejoice that the immediate financial damage from the recall and market access issues elsewhere, will not dent the economy. “ With an eye to the future, we’ve got to accept that we cannot afford a repeat of this month’s problems, but right now, this confidence in the dairy industry is a huge relief.

Hundreds attend Bragato national wine conference The 19th annual Romeo Bragato Wine Conference will conclude in Blenheim today. The national three-day event, held at the Marlborough Convention Centre, has attracted huge crowds, with more than 600 winegrowers, viticulturists, trades people and other industry representatives attending.

New Zealand Winegrowers chief executive Philip Gregan said he had noticed a more positive mood within the industry since last year’s event. He said it was the result of things like higher grape prices, good sales and an overall better performance of the New Zealand wine industry.

$10k to aid earthquake victims The Government has contributed $10,000 to the Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake Fund, Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye said. “On 16 August 2013 the Lake Grassmere earthquake caused widespread damage in Marlborough, particularly in the Seddon-Ward area,” Ms Kaye says. “In response to this, the Mayor of the Marlborough District Council Alistair Sowman has established the Marlborough Mayoral Earthquake Fund, to help those who have experienced the greatest loss. “The Mayor advises me that the fund will be used to assist members of the community who are experiencing financial difficulties as a result of the earthquake. “It will be used primarily to assist Marlborough residents who need support to pay for things like household items, medical bills, food vouchers, power, telephone and imThe Edwin Fox as it is now, and in its sailing heyday, inset. Worldwide, there are only about 30 vessels which have received such an award and it puts the Edwin Fox amongst such names as the Mary Rose, SS Great Britain, the Star of India and the Poly Woodside in Australia.

The Governor General, the Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, Governor General of New Zealand and Lady Janine Mateparae will be attending. Sir James Dunbar-Naysmith, will also be in attendance. Sir James is a direct descendent of the Duncan Dunbar Shipping fleet, that once owned the Edwin Fox. It was used many times by the British Government in the nineteenth century for such charters

as Soldiers in the Crimean war, convicts to Australia and immigrants to New Zealand. The occasion will also celebrate the 160th anniversary of the ship’s launch in Calcutta, India in 1853. Although the ceremony on Friday November 1, will be an invitation-only function, the Edwin Fox plans a weekend long celebration including a family open day/ tea party on the Saturday.

A kiwi favourite… the strawberry Home grown strawberries served on freshly baked pavlova, scattered over our cereal or simply plucked and enjoyed straight from the plant are just some of the ways we kiwis enjoy this delicious red berry. Strawberries are one of the quickest and easiest berries to grow, so they are ideal for the new gardener. If you would like to start your own strawberry patch, now is the time to get planting. They can be grown in pots, hanging baskets, troughs and almost anywhere in the garden and will reward you with fresh berries for months ahead if looked after. Winter may not seem like the most inviting time to be in the garden but research shows that strawberry plants that get enough hours in the ground at chilling temperatures well before flowering will have an increased vigour and produce a higher number of berries over the season. To ensure you get a good crop of berries each year remember that in the first season runners should be removed so that the plant’s energies go into producing fruit rather than foliage.

In the second season plants can be left to form runners that are removed and re-planted for the next season’s fruiting. Strawberries can be left in the garden for three seasons before planting new plants. Fruiting will not be as abundant as in the first season. Try planting five strawberries for every member of the family, this should ensure you have enough berries for all to enjoy all season. Choose a sunny well drained position. Cultivate the soil to a depth of 30cm and blend in strawberry fertilizer, pelletised pea straw, saturaid and Strawberry mix. Next make mounds for the strawberries to be planted on. Mounding improves drainage, increases air circulation around plants preventing the spread of disease and gives shallow soils more depth. Black polythene can be used to cover the mound before planting. Plant 15cm apart on the top of the mounds. A layer of pea straw around the plants will act as a mulch to suppress weeds and conserve water as well as keeping the fruit healthy and clean. Strawberries like most plants perform better when fertiliser is added.

WANTED TO BUY Good quality Single Beds, Bunks & Freezers

The Department of Conservation intends to apply cereal baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) by helicopter over the following area of public conservation land to control possums for the protection of forest ecosystems. Bait distribution should take one day to complete and is planned to commence early September 2013 but could be delayed until as late as October 2013. Approximately 4,400 hectares of land centred on Mt Stanley in the Tennyson Inlet Scenic Reserve; Nydia Bay Scenic Reserve; Chance, Penguin and Fairy Bay Scenic Reserve; and the Sounds Foreshore Reserves, in the Marlborough Sounds. Some private land within Penguin Bay will also be treated by agreement with the owner. METHOD OF CONTROL Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above areas (also see map). The baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 16mm in diameter, dyed green and cinnamon lured. 1080 is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • • • •

DO NOT touch bait WATCH CHILDREN at all times DO NOT EAT animals from this area DO NOT ALLOW dogs access to animal carcasses

Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access points into the above area. The operation will be preceded by the helicopter distribution of non-toxic prefeed pellets over the same area 7 – 10 days before the distribution of toxic baits. A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed at Sounds Area Office or visit the DOC website pesticides summary: http://www.doc.govt.nz/ pagefiles/3334/july-october-2013/nel-25-tennyson-inlet-mt-stanley.jpg For further information, contact Frank Rosie at Sounds Area Office, 03 520 3002 or visit Sounds Area Office, 14 Auckland Street, Picton during normal working hours (8am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday).

Acting principal Nick Raynor said it was almost double the amount of participants in last year’s event. “We must’ve had about five or six hundred people there in total,” he said of last weekend’s event. “It was a great day.” Money raised from registrations will be put toward the school’s pool shed refurbishment.

sports talk

Should it have ended in the glory of London? Well-known words of an English journalist came to mind when we heard Olympic champion sculler Mahe Drysdale failed to make the semi-finals of the sculls at the world championship in South Korea on Wednesday. “It should have ended in the glory of Berlin rather than in this autumn twilight…” These words referred to Jack Lovelock, the famous runner who won the 1500m gold in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. He set a world record as well but a month or so later he ran his last race - and lost to a 19 year old rising star. I hope Drysdale proves me wrong but I thought after winning the Olympic Games gold medal last year in London, he had reached the

pinnacle of his career and it could have been the right note on which to end his career. The reason I say this is because he is 34 years old. There’s nothing greater in his sport than an Olympic gold medal but his chances of repeating at the next Olympics in three years’ time is uncertain. I do not like seeing great champions, as he is, ending their careers as ‘also-rans.’ Yes, he had reasons for not succeeding this week at the world champs due to a limited build-up and an injury after a fall off a bike, but unlike a sportsman in his mid to late 20s, at age 34 there’s not much, if any room, for improvement. Rather he is hanging on.

In the All Blacks’ Bledisloe Cup winning match against the Wallabies in Wellington last weekend, first-five rookie Tom Taylor made a great fist of his first test. The pressure must have been immense for the No. 4 ranked firstfive in the country. He had played only one match in the position this year and since he’s the son of a former All Black, there was even greater interest in his debut. At the end of the match coach Steve Hansen, a man not known for flights of fancy and who is parsimonious with his praise at the best of times, gave credit to Taylor for a fine effort as well. Yet one newspaper columnist of British extraction who writes

Chris Tobin

for one of this country’s two main print giants said Taylor was out of his depth defensively; that he was flimsy in the tackle and that he was nowhere near an international first-five. It must have b e en disappointing for Taylor’s parents, friends and family when they read this rubbish in their local paper. Lydia Ko? Wow, what a star. The pint-sized golfer defended her Canadian Open in style last weekend. It’s going to be enjoyable following her career over the coming years.

Marlborough MX Champs held This year the Marlborough MX Champs were held on the weekend of August 24-25 just south of Seddon. The natural terrain track on Memorial Hill proved challenging for most of the competitors, but despite some wind, there were perfect racing conditions. Jack Dalton entered in the 12-16 yrs 85cc class and the 12-14 yrs 125 class and was thrilled to qualify fastest in the 85’s and third fastest in the 125 class. “My first race was in the 85’s and with 19 riders en-

tered it was the largest class of the meeting,” he said. “ I got away in second place but moved into first within a few corners, I made a break of about seven seconds a lap to the end of the race.” He eventually won by around 30 seconds. It was a disappointment that during his first race the officials decided that he was not allowed to race in the 125 class on his 85 so he raced in only the one class. “The following four races pretty much went the same way as the first,” he said.

“No holeshot but I led every lap of the weekend except one when I got pushed wide in turn one and had to ride through from 12th place. “All in all a good days racing, with five wins from five starts, he said. Jack will now get in some training for the Canterbury Champs in three weeks time. Jack wishes to thank his sponsors: McKendry Motors, Lawson Homes, Burleigh Engineering, Subway, Blastcoat, Demitry Motorcycles, Crossover

Awatere U10s back to back victory

An ecstatic U10’s Awatere team celebrating their competition final win. Right, Leighton Le Suer side stepping the opposition.

The Awatere Under 10s rugby team have become back-to-back champions after defeating Moutere Black in the Marlborough final. The game was held at Spring Creek last Thursday night, but Awatere toppled the home players 20-15. Coach Andrew Lawson said it was an exciting game and both teams turned out impressive performances. His boys had lost to Mouetere Black in the first round, but then went on to beat them in the second round, making the final win that much sweeter. “That was our only loss in about three years actually,”

he said. “The final was a really great game, played under lights and we had about 300-400 people there. “Both teams played fantastically.” Andrew and his fellow Awatere coaches, Stephen Forsyth and John Orr, said the boys had played a dedicated season, and with no subs to relieve them during games. The parents of the team said they wanted to thank all three coaches, Andrew, John and Stephen, for helping each player improve individually and for leading the team to victory.
