Upmarket bar comes to Springlands

By Kristy Martin Blenheim’s hottest new bar and restaurant, the Speight’s Ale House at Springlands, is officially open to the public.

After years of planning and development, owners John and Hayley Derry (pictured) are proud to have brought a quality, upmarket establishment and the renowned Ale House brand to Marlborough.

The business will be open from 9am to 10pm seven days a week, and possibly later on weekends.

An invite-only VIP launch on Monday night attracted 250 people, including family members and friends of the Derrys, local business representatives and suppliers.

The building has been designed by Auckland-based company Evolve Design to fit in with the Speight’s Ale House national branding and has a capacity for 338 patrons.

“It’s been a long road, but much-anticipated by the local community and as a family we are very pleased and proud to have brought the Speight’s Ale House brand to Marlborough,” Hayley said.

Raffle raises over $700 for Seddon earthquake victims Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk A raffle run at the weekend in aid of Seddon residents affected by last month's damaging earthquakes has been hugely successful, say the organisers.

Wishing to still remain anonymous, 'Paul, Eddie and Lyn' appealed to the public last week to support their raffle which they sold at New World Blenheim supermarket and the Blenheim Rotary car boot sale market.

The raffle was for a large trailer load of firewood which was won by a Mr McKenzie of Blenheim.

Aside from raffle ticket sales community members also made donations, some of up to $50.

"Thank you to the really nice gentleman who started us off with his $50 donation, your generosity is helping people in need," Eddie and Paul said.

This support was described as 'unbelieveable' and they raised $741 which they have used to purchase new crockery to be distributed to Seddon residents in need.

The Warehouse Blenheim store immediately offered its support when approached by Eddie and gave their "best price" on the nearly 30 dinner sets purchased.

Store assistant manager Warren Peter said he felt the raffle was a great community initiative.

"We aim to support the community as much as we can. What Eddie and Paul have done is great and we are proud to support them," he said.

The crockery was delivered to Seddon on Monday.

A thank you from the organisers: "We would like to thank the following people who helped us to provide crockery to Seddon residents affected by the earthquakes.

Mayoral Earthquake Fund taking applications The Mayoral Earthquake Fund is now open for applications from people needing help because they have been affected by the August earthquakes.

The latest donations, including one for $2,000, had brought the total in the Fund up to $24,004.50 by the end of last week.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says as the available funds are limited, priority will be given to applicants who are not able to get assistance through

other avenues.

It is not yet clear what kind of call is likely to be made on this Fund as many people were only just beginning to deal with their earthquake issues, said Mr Sowman.

In some cases it might be possible that funding could be allocated to cover household goods, labour, counselling or professional advice.

Two trustees, one from the community and one

from local social agencies, will be appointed alongside the Mayor to make decisions on the applications.

Applications will close on 30 September. No decisions on any applications will be made until all applications have come in. Decisions will be made by 15 October.

Knitters have struggling families covered

By Kristy Martin Struggling families in Romania, Moldova and the Ukraine are going to be a whole lot warmer this winter, thanks to some generous Marlborough knitters.

Hundreds of blankets, scarves, jerseys, mittens and beanies have been collected to be shipped over to orphans and poverty-stricken families in Eastern Europe in the lead-up to Christmas.

The woollen goods were knitted and donated as part of Operation Cover Up, which saw piles and piles of the garments stacked high in the hall at St Christopher’s Church in Blenheim last weekend.

“It started in 2000 with people knitting blankets for orphans, but it just grew,” said Operation Cover Up Marlborough coordinator Ruth Buckley.

“We are just blown away by the amount of donations we get.”

People of all ages and from all walks of life spend the year knitting and then have their work laid out in the church hall with all the others so everybody can see the combined community effort.

“People knit alone or in groups, it can be very therapeutic and relaxing and also a great way to socialise,” Ms Buckley said.

“It gives people a sense of purpose.”

The knitters are always in need of wool and Ms Buckley called on people to donate their unwanted supplies to the worthy cause.

Man falls overboard in Marlborough Sounds A desperate air and sea search was underway yesterday after a 45-year-old man fell overboard from a boat in the Marlborough Sounds.

Police said the local man was not wearing a lifejacket when he fell from a private launch about 2am.

The Coastguard, a helicopter and police

were yesterday conducting searches in the Endeavour Inlet area of Queen Charlotte Sound, where the man is believed to have entered the water.

The Police launch Lady Elizabeth lV with a Police dive squad from Wellington onboard was also assisting the search.

Changes to the living alone payment have come into effect to better support superannuitants and veterans’ pensioners who live alone.

When a superannuitant or veterans’ pensioner suffers the loss of a spouse or partner and finds they are living alone, they are now entitled to the living alone payment to help with the costs of running their household.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says the changes have made the process simpler and removed unnecessary administration burdens for widows and widowers.

New Zealand Superannuation and Veterans’ Pension will now have a new single living alone rate and a single sharing accommodation rate.

“Rowan and his team worked day,night and even weekends to have our home built on time. Everyone who was involved was clearly dedicated to their craft,” Peter said.

“People ask us what would we change... to which we reply - nothing!

“The trust for Rowan and Peter Ray Homes was there from the start and the whole experience was stressfree and fun,” Tracy said.

Could you live on $2.25 per day?

Public talks on Russian adventure Blenheim teenagers Ruby Hunt and Andrew Brooks will give two public presentations about their recent trip to Russia and the work they did at a summer camp for orphans.

Inviting all interested members of the community, the 17-year-olds will show photos and talk about the team of volunteers who travelled

to Kostrama, about 270km north of Moscow, in July as part of an Orphans Aid International project.

Both talks will be held this Sunday, the first at the Elim Centre in Blenheim from 2pm, with afternoon tea included. The second will be held at the Union Parish Church in Picton from 6pm, followed by supper.

By Kristy Martin Blenheim teenager Ruby Hunt is doing big things.

Heavily involved with Orphans Aid International, the 17-year-old recently travelled to Russia to help out at a summer camp for 38 orphans.

Now she is preparing for her next challenge – to live off $2.25 a day and see what it is like for those in extreme poverty.

Ruby is taking part in Live Below the Line, a fiveday challenge where participants are only allowed to consume $2.25 worth of food and drink each day.

But the determined teenager is more excited than nervous.

“I thought it was a really cool cause and challenge, and I’m always up for a challenge,” Ruby said, when asked what drew her to the event.

“I eat a lot though, so it’s going to be tough,” she laughed.

Live Below the Line aims to give participants direct experience with poverty by reducing their food intake. Ruby is part of a team who are raising money for Orphans Aid International.

“You can either buy $2.25 worth of food each day or you can buy your total food for a week, which is $11.25 and work out how much you can eat each day,” she explained.

The $2.25 represents the international extreme poverty line as defined by the World Bank. It is believed that 1.2 billion people live on less than this each day.

“For us, the $2.25 only relates to food and drink but for people who live in poverty that is everything – all their living costs each day,” Ruby said.

To give you an idea of how little this is, it is about the cost of two bowls of rice with some basic vegetables and no meat.

Raising cash for the cause since June, Ruby is currently the second highest fundraiser of all individual participants in New Zealand. Her tally at the time of press was $1160.

Ruby Hunt will only eat $2.25 worth of food a day during the Live Below the Line challenge.

“I originally said I wanted to raise $1000 but I went past that. As a team we’d like to raise $10,000 for Orphans Aid International.”

Skills bloom for budding embroiders

By Kristy Martin When Julie Nicholas-Biddington and Sarah Higgins first joined the Marlborough Embroiders’ Guild, they feared their work would never be up to scratch.

“Initially you just get so overwhelmed because everyone’s work is so good,” said Sarah, who decided to learn the craft as an upskill from cross-stitching.

“You just walk around thinking, wow that looks amazing.”

Fast forward to today and the two women are preparing to showcase their work in the Marlborough Embroiders Guild’s upcoming exhibition, Pearls from Within.

“It has been full-on trying to learn all the different techniques but it makes you appreciate the incredible wealth of knowledge that is there,” said Julie.

The exhibition marks the guild’s 30th

anniversary and will feature works from most of its 46 members, plus that of special guests the Kaikoura Embroiders’ Guild.

The exhibition, named for the guild’s pearl anniversary, will be held at the Marlborough Art Society Gallery on High Street in Blenheim from this Sunday.

While Sarah and Julie are both continuously improving their creative talents, the most important thing is that they are also having fun.

“The social aspect is great, we really have a good time,” Julie said.

Sarah’s skills have come so far she even did all the embroidery work for her own wedding decorations, including the bouquet. Not bad for someone who initially had her doubts.

The exhibition runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm daily and will conclude next Sunday, September 15.

Former Marlborough Mayor, Leo McKendry has the fortitude and conviction to comment on the upcoming local body elections. As an active elder statesman of Marlborough, he is in a good position to write on this subject.

Those un-named contributors who took the opportunity to slag Leo for his opinion and impugn his experience don’t even have the gumption to put their names to their letters. Shame on them!

Dear Ed, Let us have a little close examination of some of the comments in your letter to the Sun editor (Wednesday August 8).

I have met Mr Leo McKendry on several occasions at various functions and I consider myself to be quite a discerning character and one thing I can tell you that Leo McKendry is not as you hinted; anything remotely close to being involved in an ‘A” team or Old Boys Network.

To suggest this is in my view is not fresh thinking at all, in fact it borders on backward thinking, paranoia and skepticism.

What you are mistaking this so called A team for is simply a man, and other like-minded people who are happy to be available in a supportive capacity only, a role which would not

Stop hiding Dear Ed, Former Mayor Leo McKendry made some good points in his recent interview, and I find it a little disappointing (but not surprising) that two of your correspondents in August 28 edition of the Sun, chose to hide behind anonymity in their criticism of Mr. McKendry.

With local body elections coming up, perhaps it is time for the Sun to reconsider their policy of allowing correspondents to hide behind a nom de plume.

Re: bullying text

Dear Ed, Concerning the TXT talk item entitled “Grow UP Bullies” I would like to point out that the issue mentioned is not a Redwoodtown School issue but a disagreement between parents.

Yes the child is enrolled at the school but the adults mentioned are not staff members or involved in school organised groups.

If the bullying mentioned was happening between students at school we would be doing something about it as we take a very serious view on bullying.

Redwoodtown School is very disappointed that the texter associated the school with a personal issue.

Dear Ed, With local authority elections looming we hear much about the fact that some candidates have this thing called “experience” designed, presumably, to count as an advantage over those without. Well consider this. Those with this elusive attribute had to start without it just as those who now profess to have it did at some stage. In several cases these same folk started such a long time ago they have likely forgotten what it’s like not to have it.

The real question here is...what have they meaningfully and measurably done with it?

Experience is also a factor of time.

On that basis Marlborough has the highest per capita population of “experience” of any region in NZ with the highest percentage of people over 65 years. Just goes to show that with age, time and good health you too can be “experienced” Now that we have put paid to that argument, let’s start thinking about the real criteria necessary to do the elected job at hand...and this does not necessarily come from “experience” any more than it does from where you are born. When seat warming and experience are regarded as one and the same we have a Council full of inactivity.

one on one with the Sun

A strong taste for adventure Jules Watts talks to Glenise Dreaver about the places her love of adventure, and of cycling, has taken her – and her support for other women cyclists.

Jules Watts got a ring early on Monday August 5.

“Have you been for your ride yet?”

The keen cyclist fortunately hadn’t, because she was asked to get out to Seddon to meet sports and TV personality Brendon Pongia on one of his daily relay legs the length of New Zealand.

The relay was part of the national Red Nose Day campaign for child health.

Jules rode to Seddon to meet Brendon for the Blenheim leg, then realised no-one had been asked to accompany him to Picton.

“After he’d ridden all that way I just felt stink that he would be doing it on his own.

“And he did say he was really glad of the company so that we could rotate into the strong headwind that day.

It was my long ride day anyway.”

Jules is cycling for up to five hours a day as she trains for the 160km circuit of the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge on November 30.

It’s actually misleading to say she is training. She cycles because she loves endurance, on-road and mountain biking. She also loves hiking and any outdoor adventure and “I’m big into running”.

“They call me crazy,” says Jules, a teacher and physical education graduate who also holds a degree in nutrition and is preparing to do a masters

in a few years time.

During teacher training in Canterbury, done after guiding work on the Routeburn and working as a guide and instructor in West Australia, that she decided to cycle across Canada, the second biggest country.

“Russia is bigger, but I didn’t want to go there by myself.”

On July 1, 2008 there was doubt as she arrived, alone, at Vancouver airport.

“What am I doing?”

Careful planning - and her maps - paid off. Jules assembled her bike and trailer, navigated to her backpackers’ and felt OK. Although she often had to leave her rig outside shops, she was only once worried. “One person eyeing it up in a not-sogood area. ‘Cool set up,’ he said. I agreed and got out of there.”

Drivers were incredibly considerate, giving her a wide berth, in contrast with some in New Zealand.

The 3900 km adventure ended early, due to time, money, and biking hundreds, “no thousands”, of kilometres through flat pastures. One day, after 180k of corn and wheat, into a head wind, she decided “enough”.

“I ended up bussing the rest of the flat lands to start riding again just into Ontario where hills and native bush started again and there were more campsites!”

After eighteen months working in the Rockies, Jules came back, but could not get a teaching job, so she set up a coffee cart in Greymouth.

Then in May last year she came to Blenheim and was fortunate to get a job at Cycle World.

Now as a Liv/Giant women’s ambassador she hopes to gather groups of women to help them feel comfortable with cycling, both road riding and mountain biking.

She is currently running a women’s bunch ride at 1.30pm each Saturday leaving from Cycle World.

“We go as fast as the slowest person,” she says, adding that she hopes to have enough to start a fast and slow group eventually.

She will also be running a women’s mountain biking group beginning in October. You can go to Cycle World to talk to her beforehand if you want – just look for the deceptively tiny and quietly unassuming woman behind the counter.

A woman was taken to hospital after allegedly being struck with a wine bottle on Sunday.

Police arrested a 49-year-old unemployed man for assaulting the woman, believed to be his partner, in the early hours of the morning. The man was held in custody to appear in the Blenheim District Court on Monday. The victim was treated at Wairau Hospital.

Window smashed at party At 1.05a m a 4 4 -yea r- old beneficiary was arrested after he smashed a window with a piece of wood at a Maxwell Road home. Police said the man had an altercation with others during a party at the address and had smashed the window as he left. He was held in custody until sober then released with a court date.

Disorderly behaviour A 22-year-old unemployed male was arrested on Grove Road for disorderly behaviour at 1.30am.

Educating candidates As the Local Body Elections draw closer, you might expect to find council candidates conducting public meetings to discuss their various election promises.

But tomorrow, the tables will turn when community groups have the chance to present information to the candidates instead.

All candidates for the Local Body Elections, including the District Health Board, have been invited to meet with the leaders and managers of various Marlborough community groups, who will briefly discuss the work they do and the issues they face.

The groups conducting the presentations are a cross section of the groups presently operating in Marlborough and the meeting has been set up to better educate the candidates on a wide range of community issues..

Candidates have been asked to bring campaign details for a static display and information table, while community groups have also been invited to bring and display information on the work they do.

The meeting will be held from 3.30pm to 5pm tomorrow at the Wesley Centre auditorium on the corner of Henry and John streets.

Angling for change Marlborough recreational sea anglers have laid out a blueprint to government to address some burning issues within the fishing industry.

In a letter to the Minister of Fisheries Nathan Guy, the Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association has called for changes to blue cod, moki and butterfish set netting and snapper regulations.

In addition, it wants “traditional public recreational scallop” areas protected from commercial over-exploitation.

The controversial blue cod rules, such as restricting the recreational public to cod between 30 and 35cm fish, and the transit rules were unfair and only applied to recreational people said Laurie Stevenson, spokesman for the association.

“We have no argument with commercial - what they're doing is totally legal,” he said.

“Our beef is with the government's setup which unfairly discriminates against the public.”

Mr Stevenson said ideally the bag limit should be four or five fish, the slot rule abolished and replaced with a minimum size limit of about 33cms and a transit rule restriction on fish caught out in Cook Strait to be wiped.

$60,000 raised on Daffodil Day Daffodil Day 2013 proved to be another huge success, with over $60,000 raised for Cancer Society services in Marlborough.

With so many people making valuable contributions towards Daffodil Day in Marlborough, Hilary Gill from the Cancer Society said it was not possible to thank everybody individually.

The Marlborough Cancer Society would, however, like to offer its thanks to the amazing volunteers who have made Daffodil Day possible over the last 23 years: - The daffodil growers, pickers, bunchers and deliverers - Entertainers, schools, preschools, resthomes and retirement Villages - Appeal collectors and raffle volunteers - Mary Parker, for another beautiful Daffodil Day cake - Local businesses that decorated their windows, bought daffodils and donated goods for the Daffodil Day launch in early August - Logistics people, greeters and runners

Kids go yellow for Daffodil Day The kids at ABC Blenheim Central spent all last week creating, painting, decorating, and organising in the lead up to Daffodil Day. The children, all aged under three, worked very hard to ensure a lovely afternoon tea on Daffodil Day would be shared with all their families and friends.

"We started out at the beginning of the week by decorating the room with art work using every hue of yellow we could make and everyone joined in, even the youngest of eight months old contributed," said head teacher Geri Neale.

"During the week we made muffins, cookies, and a very James Hill, Kate Harrison (teacher), Tyrone Sprosen, special chocolate cake all in Geri Neale (head teacher) and Audry Sheard off anticipation of the big day. for a walk into town to donate and get daffodils.

"Invitations were sent to all our

families and friends - all we had to do was wait!"

On Friday the room was decorated and food was prepared and a few of the children and staff went into town to donatee money to the Cancer Society and buy daffodils.

"It was very busy in town the children waited for their turn turn to put money in the collection buckets and choose some daffodils, we even had time to meet the Mayor," Ms Neale said.

"We enjoyed our excursion and supporting the community but needed to return to preschool with our beautiful flowers to decorate a little bit more before the afternoon tea.

"We appreciated all our families and friends for joining us for a fantastic afternoon."

Bridge structurally sound following earthquakes Despite all of Marlborough's recent earthquake activity, the 96-year-old Opawa River Bridge is still structually sound.

A spokesperson for the New Zealand Transport Agency said imediately after the July and August earthquakes all state highway bridges in Marlborough were assessed, and these checks confirmed that they have all remained structurally sound, including the Opawa River Bridge.

"There are more factors to the potential impact of an earthquake than just the magnitude; depth and ground acceleration are also a factor.

"Bridges on the state highway are built and maintained to a high seismic standard, and the NZTA has been carrying out an extensive nationwide programme of bridge strengthening, seismic retrofitting and maintenance inspections to ensure these structures remain well equipped to demonstrate strong resilience when earthquakes occur," he said.

Spaghetti play is a great activity for developing sensory awareness and fine motor control. It’s also lots of fun for kids so get creative and make some coloured spagetti.

Directions: Over cook some long spaghetti, drain and rinse under cold water and allow it to dry over about an hour and shake apart regularly.

Separate spaghetti into three or four piles and put into plastic bags with a few drops of food colouring.

Shake the bags of pasta until the colour has been soaked up by the spaghetti.

Set it aside on a large tray but regularly shake it apart to avoid it all sticking together in one clumpy mess.

Lay down a towel, place the spaghetti tray infront of the kids and let the fun begin.

I was baking with my daughter (4) and we had made some cookie dough.

We got out all the cooking instruments we needed including an empty bottle of wine which we used as a rolling pin.

I had to answer the phone so I asked her to get the cookie dough from the fridge and put it out on the bench ready for rolling.

After hanging up the phone she proudly says to me; “I have your dope (dough) and wine ready mum.”

Her pronounciation of ‘dough’ was a little off so it made the sentence sound very sinister!

I’m glad no one else was around to hear it!

Progress at Butter Factory Local Member of Parliament Colin King says he is delighted with the progress underway to realign what is known as the Butter Factory Corner.

So far, the top soil has been stripped and ducts have been laid for electricity and telecommunication cables to be put underground. Curbing is just about to begin.

The realignment, costing over one million dollars, will provide much greater safety for traffic merging with SH1 from Alabama road as well as those turning off the Highway at Riverlands, Mr King said.

Traffic leaving SH1 and turning onto Alabama Road has needed to swing into the middle of the road to negotiate the corner, he explained.

When the work is completed a 70k

speed zone will be in place, trucks will be able to stack well clear of the railway line and a right and left tuning bay will be in place improving road safety and freight efficiency.

Concerns have been raised by parents of children at Riverlands School, locals and also from the CMP Meat management, but Mr King said he was sure there would be some very relived people around when the changes had been completed.

The project has been designed by Aurecon and the construction contract was awarded to Fulton Hogan (Marlborough) in mid-July. Work is due to be completed by the end of November.

How to recognise signs of a stroke Strokes can't be prevented, they hit without warning and only affect older people?

No! These are all myths.

The truth is that strokes affect all ages with around 24 people experience a stroke everyday in New Zealand.

In one year nearly 2000 people will be affected under retirement age and of this number, around 40 by children.

Young cyclist pedals to victory

Close game for local lads The rugby season is over for Marlborough Boys’ College First XV team, who were defeated by Otago Boys’ High School at the weekend.

The team, whose victory against Nelson Boys’ College led to their place in the South Island title, went down 26-20.

The game was played at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Entries open for triathlon Running shoes, bike and togs ready because entries are now open for the Marlborough Women’s Triathlon.

The revamped triathlon, to be held on December 1, will be limited to 500 entries, which organisers expect to fill up quickly.

Based at its traditional location, Stadium 2000, this year’s event will have a 5.5km run/walk, 14km cycle and 100m swim.

The weather was perfect, the racing was exceptional and the organisation of the biggest secondary schools cycling event in the top of the south island went without a hitch as some of New Zealand’s most talented riders took to the roads and circuits of Marlborough at the weekend.

The standout performer was local Under 17 rider Georgia Catterick, a member of the Bike NZ Junior Development programme who won the Under 17 girls general classification with an impressive time trial followed by a good tactical ride in the remaining 3 races and a strong finish to the road race.

Callum Caughey raced well to get 3rd in the sprint ace for Under 15 boys while Dylan Vile, Ethan Batt and Thomas Westend raced strongly to just miss out on podium finishes.

Tour organise Joe Blakiston said that

the strength of the large Christchurch schools came through with some exceptional shows of power riding to take away most of the main male races.

The Under 17 boys team, in particular, from Christchurch Boys High School with its 5 cyclists rode away from the field to comfortably win the Road Race on the Benmorven Marlborough Ridge circuit on Sunday.

The crowds gathered at the finish were very vocal and reminiscent of a grand tour finish and shows the great heart that Junior Cycling has in New Zealand at present.

From this race a selection will be made for the New Zealand Schools Cycling Championships in Fielding in October.

Renwick students off to a flying start in their cross country

it’s in the blood Three members of one family represented Marlborough Athletics at the NZ Road Champs held in Dunedin last Saturday.

Robbie Barnes finished 4th in the Mens 50-54 Age Group completing the 10km course in a time of 36min 58sec.

Jess Barnes was 11th in the Women 18-19 Age Group over the 5km course. Her time was 22min 54sec.

Anna Barnes competed in the Girls 10-12 2km event finishing 5th in a time of 8min 33sec.

Renwick School Cross Country excites once again!

By Renwick School student Frank Hartland You may have thought that there was a stampede at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre but, no, you were wrong!

On Wednesday August 14, Renwick School held, yet again, another amazing cross country and, believe it or not, this once in a year’s event has been going for approximately 63 years.

This year, the turnout was amazing as heaps of people had turned

This heart-pumping event is enjoyed by many Renwick students.

Miss Newman, Renwick School teacher and organiser of the event, says, "The thing I love most about cross country is seeing students, who have trained really hard, achieve their personal goals."

Everyone was obviously enjoying it as the fun and happiness was showing throughout the event.

The first race was the year 2 boys.

All you could hear was cheering as the first race was about to start.

Bang! They were off; the first race had now started.

Miss Newman says "I love anything to do with sports so that’s why I applied to be the sport’s organiser."

Next it was the year 2 girls’ race.

Eventually, the last races began and soon enough, all the races had finished.

This fantastic event had come to a sad close but at the same time
