Abracadabra! Making bullies disappear

Story and photo by Kristy Martin A travelling magician is taking a unique approach to tackle the serious issue of bullying in schools. Elgregoe, aka Greg Britt, uses puppets, ventriloquism, songs and live animals to teach children how to treat others with care and respect. Christchurch-based Greg, with his show assistant wife Sue, visited Marlborough schools this week as part of their national “You’ve got the power” tour.

While Greg has been a performer all his life, his anti-bullying focus began 15 years ago when a school principal he knew threw down a challenge. “If you’re a real magician, you’d be able to make bullying disappear,” were his words. After thoroughly researching the issue of bullying in schools, Greg decided to create a unique and fun way to encourage students to have a good attitude at school. Continued page 3

What I would like to achieve: Stop the earthquakes, save Picton, create well-paid jobs, clean the rivers, expand businesses that earn us overseas dollars, protect the environment etc. Failing that, I hope to make wise decisions for Marlborough. We need to improve the infrastructure maintenance or things deteriorate; costing us more. Help people understand how council works; many rules are dictated by central government while the council is expected to implement them. Expressing an opinion prior to a hearings means I have to withdraw as I have made up my mind without hearing the case.

A lot of study was required for that with assignments to pass. The three of us have proven that we can work together. In council you can’t achieve anything on your own.

Schooled at Picton Borough School and Queen Charlotte College. On leaving school, I worked for the Picton Post Office, the freezing works, NZ Rail and the Interisland Line. I put my name forward for the Marlborough Sounds ward as Picton and the Sounds hold fond memories for me. For the residents of Karaka Point and Waikawa North, I will do my best to find out why the increase in rates and rezoning was necessary. I don’t think the colour palette policy has taken into account the health and safety issues. The bright colours are great

As Sounds residents, Jann and I have operated Te Mahia Bay Resort for more than twenty years. Three years ago I was elected to Council for the Sounds Ward with a commitment to make our communities more vibrant, better places to live and work. I wanted to share your ideas, listen to your issues and, working through council, make things happen. I have listened, I have worked to reflect the concerns of our ward and believe I have achieved some of the things we set out to do. But there is more to do, we face more challenges and more opportunities. My experience

Easy to reach, willing to listen. I bring drive and enthusiasm to this role. With strong communication skills, I am available to listen to your concerns and take issues forward to council. Rates must be kept to a minimum while maintaining good levels of service from council. Living locally I seek a fair spend for the Marlborough Sounds Ward. Council policy must allow for economic growth while protecting the unique qualities of the area we live in. Having operated a business within the region for 31 years, I understand the needs of com-

Strong winds batter shed Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Budge Street residents Pat and Ian Patchett woke Wednesday morning to find a crumpled garden shed sitting outside their kitchen window. The shed had blown over their fence from their neighbour's property during the night after strong winds buffeted Marlborough during a storm which affected the country this week. Despite hearing the wind during the night, neither Pat or Ian said they heard the shed crashing over their fence.

inbrief

"I drew open my curtains and got a shock when I saw this shed sitting two metres from our kitchen window. "Any closer and it could have smashed through the glass," Pat said. "I think the neighbour will need a new shed, this one is destroyed," Ian said. Heavy rain and lashing winds swept across Otago and Southland on Tuesday before winds moved on to Marlborough Tuesday night and Wednesday. The record 251.9kmh northwest winds were recorded on the Mt Hutt summit in Canterbury.

Hospital. The episode aired on Monday night. “I’ve always been famous,” Jarod said wryly. “I can’t go anywhere in Blenheim without being recognised.” After his brief appearance on the show, Jarod's Facebook page “went absolutely beserk”. “I think this morning I had 44 emails. “People kept saying ‘You’re so lucky!’”

But it was not the first time Jarod, who runs a computer repairs business, visited the Shortland Street set and both times he got to rub shoulders with some of the stars. “It is amazing how different it is when you see the set compared to what is on-screen,” he says, like a true insider. He even had to sign a confidentiality agreement preventing him from giving away plot details.

Continued from page 1 He has since performed for over 800,000 primary and intermediate students across New Zealand. “People think by using magic tricks the message might get lost, but everything we do has the message tied in to it,” he said. For example, in the show Seymour the dinosaur puppet gets advice on how to deal with people who tease him for being green. This year’s show is centred on being a hero by respecting others and forging good friendships. Live animals, including Zazu the macaw parrot and Baxter the bunny rabbit, are part of its appeal. In 2009 the Queen appointed Greg a Member of the NZ Order of Merit for services to education. His show is now sponsored by TrustPower, who have helped the performer reach a wider audience and continue to spread his vital message. Local schools visited included Witherlea, Tui Marina, Picton Primary and Seddon.

Jarod’s brush with TV fame By Kristy Martin Blenheim’s Jarod McClintock got a taste of TV fame when he appeared as an extra on Shortland Street this week. Jarod won a charity auction on Trade Me that saw him jetting off to Auckland in July and onto the set of his favourite New Zealand television show. Food Safety Minister Nikki Kaye announced consultation has begun to define manuka honey to enable truth in labelling. By Kristy Martin The cost of dumping grass clippings is about to skyrocket and professional lawn mowers are not happy about it. Greenfingers Compost will no longer accept lawn clippings from October 1, meaning they will have to be dumped at the Blenheim Transfer Station instead. Property Maintenance owner Phillip Conza says this means the cost of the service will almost double. Instead of paying $15 per cubic metre at Greenfingers, the transfer station charges $27. “In Spring we are there dumping every day,” said Mr Conza. “It is a huge costing to pass on to our clients. “Between that and fuel increases over the last nine months, there are just no margins in mowing lawns anymore.” Mr Conza says residents will also feel

the pinch. “Most people in Marlborough are struggling now without having to pay that increase. “I think it’s highly unacceptable.” He believes people will resort to illegal dumping. Greg Lyford, who owns Greenfingers Compost with his wife Kaye, said council was not renewing his contract. The contract doesn’t expire until the end of 2015, but it takes two years for lawn clippings to decompose, he said. Whatever waste is leftover, he will have to clean up and remove himself. “We’ve already got 6000-8000 cubic metres onsite and it takes two years to break down so we just can’t take any more,” he said. Professional lawn mower Phillip Conza says “Council has already got someone else the cost to dispose of lawn clippings is about in mind (for the contract) and they don’t to skyrocket. want lawn clippings onsite.”

Year 12 students Angus Pauley, Gwen Burney, Hayley Tucker and Logan Murphy all set for the college formal.

Businesses praised for formal support By Kristy Martin The long-awaited college formal is set to go ahead tomorrow night, after the event had to be postponed due to last month’s earthquakes. Marlborough Girls’ College and Marlborough Boys’ College students will spend the day primping and preening before the big event kicks off at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Marlborough Girls’ College principal Karen Stewart said staff and students from both schools wanted to publicly thank local

businesses for their generous support in helping get the postponed function back off the ground. Many hairdressers and makeup artists rescheduled appointments at no extra charge. Convention Centre staff had also worked closely with the schools to organise a new date, hence why the formal will be held on a Saturday for the first time. Year 12 student Gwen Burney is excited for a night of glamour. She already had her makeup done and was heading to the Forum to get her hair

done when the 6.6 quake hit on August 16. School staff had to let all students know the event was cancelled via social media and radio announcements. “I don’t think it was a let down because it’s something that can’t be helped,” Gwen said. Fellow student Hayley Tucker said the postponement had given her time to learn how to walk in heels. “I’m really nervous, but it’s going to be so much fun,” Hayley said.

Also the chap on orange shirt for help and support. My 9 year old grand son became a man in a minute, cleaned up the mess, got more food for us and looked after me for the rest of the night. Think carefully before voting Dear Ed, It strikes me that a number of councillors running for another term need a careful look at. We have at least two long standing councillors who have had their businesses in trouble or shaky as far as money goes. If they cannot run their own affairs properly why have them on council? Another councillor I understand, sits through the whole year never saying a word. What contribution is that by her? So my suggestion is think, and look carefully before you vote. Neil Wilson

Local Body Elections Dear Ed, The candidates meeting at the Elim Church was very interesting. I noticed in response to the question "a divided council with an upper A team and a lower B team", the very defensive reaction by councillors Sloan, Taylor and Dew. One even angrily called the divided team idea "crap". The conceit was evident and when Taylor declared more than once, to the voters, "I'm your man". I wonder how arrogant can people elected be? I was not impressed. Time for the old guard to go !!! Three terms on council - 9years - should suffice. Watching voter

Battle of Britain and Malayan Veterans’ Day services Two services will be held in Blenheim to mark military events on opposite sides of the world; the Battle of Britain and the Malayan Conflict. A memorial service will be held at the Blenheim War Memorial clock tower from 11am this Sunday, September 15, to mark Battle of Britain Day. The Battle of Britain is commemorated as

the turning point of World War 2 when the pilots of the RAF staved off the Luftwaffe attack on southern England despite being heavily outnumbered. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman will give a short address and the keynote speech will be made by the National President of the RNZAFA, Air Commodore (retired) Terry Gardiner MNZM.

Then on Monday September 16, another memorial service will be held at the clock tower from 11am to mark Malayan Veterans’ Day. New Zealand forces served in the 12 years of the Malayan Conflict alongside troops from Malaya, Australia, Rhodesia, Fiji and Britain. Last year on September 16, the inaugural Malayan Veterans Day was marked in Wellington.

This year it will be marked for the first time in Marlborough. The address will be given by John Chauval, President of the Marlborough branch of the Malayan Veterans’ Association. In the event of wet weather the services will be held at the RSA Lounge, Clubs of Marlborough.

Smiling through their lung battle Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk For Bridget Nolan and Martin Kenny the battle to “improve chances of longevity” is something they have been fighting hard for since being diagnosed with serious lung conditions. Bridget was diagnosed 19 months ago with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Antisynthetase Syndrome, incurable conditions which require a heavy dose of different medications which in turn have caused more damage. The strength of the auto immune suppressant drugs have triggered Osteoporosis and Metabolic Syndrome as well as a number of other side effects. From the outside Bridget exudes strength, humour, determination and cheerfulness, while underneath she struggles daily with the physical limitations of her disease and side effects from medication.

The same can be said about Martin, a bubbly and smiling man who loves his two boys and looks forward to his next fishing trip. But for all his life he has lived with Primary Pulmonary Hypertension and is now in “critical need of a double lung transplant”. Martin is on the transplant list but until then he too struggles with day to day chores and activities due to his illness. Not only is it physically limiting for Martin and Bridget, but it has also been financially difficult as they cope with ever increasing medication costs and travel expenses visiting specialists. This is where Blenheim woman Erica Sprosen is helping, organising fundraising dinners to raise money for Martin and Bridget. There is another fundraising dinner and auction set for October 21 at Bamboo Garden Restaurant. To make this a success and to help Martin and Bridget,

The students have been discussing the recent earthquakes and looking at how they “can make a difference” to those affected,” said principal Selena Tonks. “We already had a connection to the Salt Works through one of our parents so the students decided to make soup for the employees using vegetables from our edible garden.” Collecting the soup was solar plant operator Jonny Keen who said the soup was appreciated.

Main Street, an important road responsible for linking State Highway One traffic to Blenheim, Picton and Christchurch. The street and its businesses play an important part in servicing the transport companies, tourists and locals which use the road daily. Located along Main Street are a multitude of businesses which have experienced a number of changes throughout the years. Most recently the past two years have seen more than 10 businesses relocate or open on Main Street. In 2011 Burger King opened its Blenheim restaurant much to the delight of burger fans. Also open for dining is Gramados Res-

taurant which opened in 2012. Popular hunting store Marlborough Hunting & Fishing relocated from Scott Street to its larger premises on Main Street in 2012, as did Maataa Waka Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust which relocated from Seymour Street towards the end of 2012. Sporting goods chain Rebel Sport opened beside Briscoes in 2012, the same year the

Lifetime Group relocated to its current premises beside Rebel Sport. In the past 12 months Main Street welcomed new businesses Marlborough Glass as well as the Black Rose Tattoo Emporium. The Rangitane House was formally opened in June and in July a brand new building was completed for Guthrie Bowron.

By Glenise Dreaver “Adversity is a great teacher,” says farming leader and dryland innovator Doug Avery of Farmside at Seddon. It is four weeks today since he was part of a community left in deep shock as they faced their devastated homes and properties following the 6.6 earthquake of August 16. Yesterday morning, a mood of determination was revealed as eight of the area’s community and farming leaders met Minister of Primary Industries Nathan Guy on Guy Lissaman’s property to brief him on the situation. The meeting was, said Doug “very constructive”. It reinforced his own belief in the strength of the community in which they live. While there are those in the area who are hurting badly and need support, he says there is also

an air of real positivity in their highly supportive and resilient community. The Minister was, however, told in no uncertain terms, about the unfairness of minor claims being already met, while those in the most desperate situations had never had an EQC inspection. “I have a friend with a very badly damaged house and he has seen no one, and another with just a cracked chimney and they are all fixed up.” “On our property, we’ve made a bit of a pact. We’re all struggling with issues and with lack of sleep you can do or say things you wouldn’t normally do. “So we just give each other time and space to recover.” While great damage had been done to their water systems, they were lucky it had kept raining after the quake. “It meant the stock had water.”

And he also told the Minister that he knows people who have paid a lot of good money to rip the pan under their dryland properties. “But I think I’ve had it done for nothing. The day after the quake it poured with rain and the water just flowed into the ground. “We seem to have expanded our aquifer capacity for nothing! “I refuse to surrender my brief time on this world to natural events. “I looked at the street lamp at the top of Tetley Brook and noticed that it was bent, but not broken. “Now someone has made sure it’s operating again. The light is on. And I thought ‘That’s me. Bent, but not broken, down but not out. “Our lamp is slowly coming bright again. “Nothing that Viagra can’t fix,” he joked.

Births This Week

One of the many myths of Friday 13th comes from biblical origins... 13 guests, including Christ and his 12 disciples, were in attendance at the last supper. This is where the Christian belief ties in, making Friday a believed unlucky day, as the crucifixion occurred the following day on a Friday.

Fort Eden under attack

Mayoral debate on sport

A remarkable sporting record will be tested once more on Saturday. It is the magnificent feat the All Blacks have achieved on Eden Park of being unbeaten in tests there since 1994. That’s a long time ago. Some of the present All Blacks would have been toddlers back then when Sean Fitzpatrick’s side lost to France in July and then drew the next month 18-all against South Africa. Tomorrow the Boks will be at

Sport Tasman is putting the challenge out to Mayoral candidates in Marlborough by inviting them to a “Thought on Sport” Mayoral discussion at Lansdowne Park. Each Mayoral hopeful will get five minutes to outline their views on sport and recreation and where they see the priorities. Following the candidates’ presentations, questions will be invited from the audience. All four candidates have agreed to attend. The event will run from 7pm on Monday September 16 in the Jim Fraser lounge. RSVP to kirsty.s@sporttasman. org.nz

Eden Park determined, no doubt, to end that great record. One well known northern expert predicts the Boks could win given a strong effort they managed against the Wallabies last weekend while at the same time the All Blacks had a scratchy win against Argentina. One thing in the All Blacks’ favour, however, is that you have the feeling they are well coached. Steve Hansen has gathered round him some keen rugby brains, among them Grant Fox, and they

are getting the team onto the paddock highly charged and ready to rip the opposition apart. You could almost say they All Blacks look better under Hansen than they did under Henry. The Boks will be big, hard and brutal in the forwards and apparently they have some attacking flair in the backs but the All Blacks, when on song, have shown incredible speed in moving the ball and creating opportunities out of virtually nothing. Last year we would have been

Chris Tobin

deeply worried not having Richie McCaw in the side. That attitude has changed, and the great depth of New Zealand rugby is being shown once more. It should be a fascinating test with perhaps a narrow All Blacks victory.

Bike Skills Jam for children

Fun activities for kids

On Sunday September 15, at the Rarangi pump track, local children can bring their bikes and safety helmets to learn bike handling and riding skills suited to their age in a safe and fun environment. The pump track, next to the Rarangi fire station, is like a “roller coaster for bikes” said organiser Sarah Gray, adding that there were lots of bumps and berms which use upper body strength. “And it’s just a heap of fun.” Along with a local working bee doing new plantings at the site, New Zealand’s pump track “guru” Damian Jones is repairing and resurfacing the much-used track on Friday and Saturday. While he is here, his expertise is being used to run three sessions on the Sunday.

Students from Seddon and Ward will take part in a variety of outdoor challenges today. The 160 kids, aged 5-10, will be divided into teams to compete in entertaining activities, including running relay races while balancing buckets of water, building block towers and completing giant puzzles. The event has been organised by Sport Tasman, who wanted to give the kids some fun in the wake of the earthquakes.

The first, thirty minutes long, caters for up to eight children between five and seven years. Between 12.30-1pm they will learn bike skills essentials on the new mini pump track. From 1.15-2pm, eight to ten year olds will start on that track, then move to the larger and “more formidable” taniwha trail track said Sarah, with a session for those 11-13+ between 2.15-3pm The pump track is well used, hence the need for repairs, and she said word of mouth had been operating. “It’s wonderful to see cyclists coming off the ferries and calling in to have a go.” Places are free but limited, so it is important to register by ringing Sarah on 03 570 5221.
