Raised and educated in Lincoln, I joined the navy and served for 24 years, including as a UN peacekeeper in Cambodia. Later, at Woodbourne, I trained defence force physical education instructors and have represented New Zealand in triathlon age group championships.

In 2005 we purchased Thymebank, building the business up and supporting and sponsoring many local organisations before selling this year. The values I would bring to council are perseverance, integrity and courage. I am concerned about the level of Marl-

borough’s debt. Senior council management must work harder to create and stay within budgets. We must also reduce red tape. Smart water allocation is important, and we need to ensure our civil defence systems are maintained to the highest possible standards.

My priorities would be affordable and safe drinking water, well maintained roads and support for communities rebuilding after the earthquakes. I have a positive and practical approach and am committed to Marlborough.

munities and work together for progress for all. Marlborough is dependent for its prosperity on people, land and water use. We are lucky that our industries are supported by innovative Marlborough processors who add value and who export . Encouraging business to flourish grows

provincial income, which pays for local ambitions. As the only career farmer and practical conservationist standing in this Ward, I see the “big picture” based on my experience of what works.

I understand your operations and concerns. I believe I can continue to be effective for all rural Marlborough citizens. A good listener, I have worked hard for Wairau/Awatere, and for Marlborough. I believe I bring common sense, perspec-

tive and experience to decision making. I will work for viability and sustainability of primary production, viability of rural communities, water storage, allocation, and quality, transparent local decision-making, long-term planning and responsible rating.

For the last 30 years I have been privileged to record the lives and history of the people of heartland Marlborough in my writing. I have developed a deep passion for this place and its people and I now wish to give Katrina Whiteside

Purrfect pets for Black Friday The SPCA decided to turn Black Friday into “Black Cat Friday”, encouraging members of the public to shun superstition and adopt a black cat. Debunking the myths that black cats were unlucky, SPCA Marlborough’s office manager Kate Horrey said there was no room for superstition when it came to the very real issue of animal welfare. “We firmly believe that bringing a black cat into your life is a very lucky thing,” Kate said. To mark Friday the 13th, the centre, on Fox’s Island Road, Renwick, had extended opening hours, while staff decorated the animal enclosures and gave balloons and lollies to visiting kids. The majority of animals at the SPCA are strays. They occasionally take in unwanted pets, but only when people can’t look after them for exceptional reasons, such as ill health. Two cats were adopted out that day, but unfortunately neither were black.

At that stage there will be the opportunity for public input. It is not known how recent concerns about seismic activity in the Clifford Bay area have affected the analyses in the report. Airport expansion The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce has praised the council for supporting the airport expansion, announced last week. “On behalf of the chamber and the business community we represent, we would like to congratulate Marlborough District Council for having agreed to move on this initiative,” president Nikki de Reeper said. “We have been lobbying for this since 2010 because we believe the benefits for Marlborough will significantly outweigh the costs.” Expected to start next April, the passenger terminal will be extended to prevent congestion and the baggage area upgraded.

Meet NMDHB hopefuls

Clifford Bay report Phone counselling for Seddon quake kids likely this month A spokesperson for Minister of Transport Gerry Brownlee’s office has confirmed that the feasibility report on the Clifford Bay terminal proposal could come to the Minister by the end of September. The Minister’s Press Secretary Nick Bryant said yesterday that the next step would be that it would go to a Cabinet Committee for discussion, then to Cabinet itself, for a decision on whether to proceed. That process could take several weeks. Should Cabinet decide that the

Following the success of the meet the council candidates event, the Picton public can now meet the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board hopefuls. The forum will be held on Thursday September 26 from 7.30pm at the Picton Primany School. Each candidate will have five minutes to put their case forward followed by questions from the floor.

Crash Investigation Police are seeking any witnesses to crash which occurred on State Highway One near Clarence on Sunday about 1pm. A silver Honda was travelling south towards Kaikoura when it collided with an oncoming Toyota Camry. Police would like to hear from other motorists who may have seen the Honda, particularly anyone towing a caravan or similar vehicle in a southerly direction at the time. No one was injured in the crash, however the road was reduced to one lane for two hours while the scene was examined and cleared. Witnesses should contact Blenheim Police.

Pony rides huge hit at school gala Story and photos by Kristy Martin Six-year-old Jonty Gifford was one of the lucky children who got to take Timmy the pony for a gentle stroll around the Redwoodtown School last Saturday. Timmy, a placid creature in the company of the Blenheim Riding School, was a huge hit with hundreds of kids that day at the Redwoodtown School gala. Crowds flocked to the gala, held in perfect sunny weather at the Cleghorn

Street grounds. Highlights of the event included a petting zoo, bouncy castles, face painting, chocolate wheel, silent auction, plants sale, cakes and a trash and treasure stall. There was even a human fly wall for children to climb while wearing velcro suits. Students from the school kept the crowds further entertained with singing performances and kapa haka displays.

Right: Jonty Gifford, 6, gets a ride on Timmy the pony, with the help of Kristen Burnett from the Blenhem Riding School. Inset: Bella Sword, 4, from Blenheim cuddles up to a rabbit at the River Loop Lops petting zoo.

Popular Gifts for a Wedding Party Today couples are definitely shopping for gifts for their bridal party. Cufflinks are a very popular choice for the groomsmen and crystal or pearl earrings for the bridesmaids. Depending on the couple’s budget, suitable watches may also be a good choice for the men and a pendant, tennis or pearl bracelet or earrings gives variety of choice for the women. For the bride tennis bracelets in diamonds or CZs, antique-style earrings, and diamond (or CZ) set pearldrop earrings are very popular. On many occasions the husband-to-be or the parents of the bride wish to give her a piece of jewellery to wear and remember the day. A custom-made item can be perfect and does not need to ‘break the bank’! For the groom a pair of stylish cufflinks or a dress watch can fit the bill and again custommade or antique cufflinks can mark this very happy occasion. They never date and can be worn for all the special occasions that unfold for the couple over the years ahead Many times brides will buy for themselves for their wedding day and this can be made easier when discussed with experienced staff who can suggest how the perfect result can be achieved. Wedding season is approaching again so if you have any of these gift choices to make ask us first. You won’t be one of the crowd.

By Kristy Martin Marrion McNabb is one crafty woman. She creates unique and eye-catching figurines out of recycled materials like wire, old singlets and beaded necklaces. “They are made from old t-shirts, singlets, bits of material,” Marrion explained. “Some are made from lace doilies. “I get most of the jewellery from The $3 Shop. “They are 99 per cent recycled.” Marrion’s dolls, which she hasn’t yet named, were on display at the Marlborough Federation of Women’s Institutes’ One Day Festival last week. The event, held in the Salvation

Army rooms in Blenheim, featured a craft competition with more than 200 entries, photography, baked goods and guest speakers. Federation president Maureen O’Connell, who was offering taste tests of her Stony Bottom olive oil, said the calibre of entries in the craft competition was very high. The five women’s institutes are Renwick, Springlands-Farnham, Picton and Dillons Point. Renwick won a trophy for the most points scored on the day. Percy had battled Type 1 diabetes for 23 years and found he was having trouble keeping it under control, so he joined a System:slim programme called ‘How to Save a Life’. He is now only taking a quarter of the insulin that he was initially, and the 10.8kg loss has enabled him to work long hours and keep up with his grandchild who he adores. “We are very proud of Percy’s results as he continues to make progress and is committed to keeping his weekly consultation which he says is the key to his success,” Jean says. “Having a one on one consultation with Jean keeps me motivated and focused on my goal, even when my health sometimes makes this difficult,” Percy said.

Waste site ‘undecided’ Marlborough District Council says it is yet to decide the future of the green waste site in Wither Road following the departure of Greenfingers Compost. Last Friday, a Sun report explained that Greenfingers would no longer lease the site from council from the end of 2015, so the business would stop accepting grass clippings as of next month. In response, council’s solid waste manager Alec McNeil confirmed Greenfingers would vacate but would also have a further year to clear the site of any stockpiled waste material. “The future use of the site has been under review by council since ...May 2012,” Mr McNeil said. “Council is considering a number of factors that may influence the future use of the site, including development on neighbouring land. Another factor ... was the work underway to establish a regional composting operation in conjunction with the wine industry at another location. “In the meantime the Wither Road site will continue as a drop-off point for greenwaste and pick-up point for compost products. After the lease expires in December 2015 the actual compost production process may relocate to a new site,” he added.

Malayan Veterans’ Day

Mayfield Kindy kids Samuel Marshall,4, and Karma Alekna, 4, are learning to grow sunflowers.

Marlborough Malayan Veterans’ Association president John Chevaul addresses a service at Seymour Square on Monday to mark Malayan Veterans’ Day. It was the first time the day has been honoured locally. Mr Chevaul is pictured with Luke Elliott from the RNZAF, Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman and Reverend Canon Graeme Grennell. In the last 12 months, the Council has begun something new, something exciting - and I very much want to see this through. We’ve begun an economic development project that is the most imaginative and comprehensive that Marlborough has seen in decades. Our “Smart and Connected” work recognises and reflects the innovative streak that runs through Marlborough - and brings together all that is best within our many bright industries and businesses. It’s our vision and plan for the future. Helping to extract more value and create job growth. What it’s done is to provide this region with some economic leadership, and confidence that this is a place where smart business will flourish. I am totally comitted to this project.

Kindy gardening By Kristy Martin Gardening used to be a skill that was passed on from generation to generation, but sadly this is no longer the case. It is for this reason that Daltons Landscape Supplies has teamed up with local kindy teachers to encourage kids to learn to grow

their own sunflowers. The children at Mayfield Kindergarten in Blenheim are among scores of Marlborough youngsters growing their own sunflowers, which teachers hope will give them a variety of new skills. The children will learn about how plants grow from tiny seeds

to flourishing flowers, the responsibility of regular watering and even the basic math of measuring and recording plant growth. The project will also include a competition to see whose plant is the tallest at the end, who was the most diligent waterer and whose sunflower has the widest head.

Yes I do, but it is probably eight months since I wore it. I don’t really go places where I need to wear one.

Yes, I do. The last time I wore it was probably three years ago, at one of the kids’ weddings.

I own one, but I can’t remember the last time I wore it. I just go casual most of the time.

I own three - one nice one, one okay one and one shabby one. I’m from the UK and one of the best things about New Zealand is not having to wear a suit everyday.

I do own a suit, but I have no idea when I last wore it. Probably about six months ago.

Old guard Dear Ed, What a reaction of squawking (September 4) at critics of ex-mayor Leo McKendry publicly endorsing the “old guard” for Marlborough’s council elections. I thought McKendry’s public thoughts were really “off.” What I noticed was the correspondents defending him. Is it true, one is the wife of the mayor’s campaign manager? Are the three defenders of Mr McKendry and the “old guard” on council happy with council’s spending and rates? The new theatre and its car park. We are in a recession, the timing is very wrong! Not helped with the recent quakes in and around Seddon & Ward. What of the Queen Street concrete park, the $65,000 roundabout tittivation by council offices, council into commercial ventures while core services languish? What of debt? What of closed meetings? What of rate rises? Is MDC’s forestry good investment? What of murky streams and the Taylor River? I do praise council for opposing King Salmon’s industrialisation of the Marlborough Sounds, as a few years ago at one stage the Sounds were a Maritime Park. But like most ratepayers I am not sure about our Council keeping the Scottish report secret? Often they cite commercial sensitivity (or jargon to that effect), but what they really mean is? RATEPAYER Sensitivity!! (us mugs) Graham Elwell

Stop the quakes Dear Ed, Councillor Barsanti would appear to be exceeding his duties as a MDC Councillor, unless he has access to some greater power than I have. For the love of me, I can’t see how Councillor Basanti - and his posse of MDC councilors - are going to “stop the earthquakes.” People pray and put money in collection plates to achieve such dreams - rates should not be used for such purposes. However, I, along with many more ratepayers no doubt, await the results of his efforts.

Care? Dear Ed, I visited a home at a lake and a wood, to see a special person who is misunderstood. With her flattened hair, glazed eyes and hand out stretched, she recognizes me, but I not her. She cannot reach with her out stretched hand and then I see she is tied down. I look around and see more and feel dismayed at what I saw. The watchdogs come in and tick all the boxes, everything is hunky-dorey from what they saw. So I continue to feel upset from what I saw, and wonder is this, what is install! For many of us in our golden years to languish is such disgusting care. Sunflower

Artists create stunning Marlborough landscape “I think we did quite well,” Joan said. “The nicest part was everybody being so enthusiastic.” The Redwood Village Artists meet every Friday at the Brooklyn Croquet Club in Blenheim. The group is now in its 15th year. Their exhibition is called The 12 Late Bloomers and begins on Friday night from 6pm at the Yealands Estate Gallery on High Street. It will be open daily from 10.30am4.30pm, running until September 28.

9 Gold Medals for Yealands The Yealands Wine Group continues to go from strength to strength, picking up a remarkable nine Gold medals at the country’s largest wine competition, the New Zealand International Wine Show. A total of 34 medals, including the nine gold and 10 silver medals, were awarded to the company including wins for its Peter Yealands, Yealands Estate and Crossroads brands. These accolades come on the back of last week’s haul of seven gold medals at the China Wine and Spirits Awards (including 2 double-gold medals). Peter Yealands, founder of Yealands

Wine Group, is thrilled with the accolades pouring in from around the world as the new vintage wines are being released. “2013 is shaping up to be a cracker year for our wines, it’s all very exciting,” he said. “It makes me incredibly proud to see our wines continually recognised, both at home and on the world stage. “I had thought the 2012 vintage successes were going to be a hard act to follow but it’s looking to be easier by the day.” New release 2013 Sauvignon Blanc accounted for five of the group’s gold medals.

Story and photo by Kristy Martin A collaborative oil painting by a dozen artists will be the focal point at the Redwood Village Artists’ exhibition starting this week. The painting, titled ‘12 points of view’, was crafted by each member of the group and pieced together to create a stunning landscape scene that resembles looking through a window. It was the idea of Joan Johnson, one of the original members, who gave everyone a square of canvas to work on.

“I’ve always been a fighter” Feebe Busch of Waikawa talks to Glenise Dreaver about “the road less travelled” that is her life. Feebe had to show real grit from the start, having been brought up on a pioneering farm near Lawrence in Central Otago. Her stepfather didn’t believe in mod cons like machinery. There were horses and sledges, she said. “And us.” “Me and my twin brother were cocky’s slaves. I can remember tossing bales of hay on stacks twelve high.” Although now in her element in the craft shop “feebe-s” in Picton’s High Street, handiwork wasn’t on the agenda then. “My mother wouldn’t teach me to knit, so a girl at school taught me using wool on pencils.” Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t a happy home. “I broke away. I went nursing.” But working on her weekends off on a logging skidder earned her £10 a week more than her nursing, so Feebe lost enthusiasm. She married during training and left when she completed. The years during and after her marriage were tumultuous and she shifted often. And, she says, her fights for the underdog have also seen her move on. Work in woollen mills and the furniture and upholstery industries developed her craft skills. There was also a return to nursing, including a spell as sub-matron at the Laura Fergusson home for the disabled. The call to the sea that followed may have been because her natural father came from a well-known seafaring family. She worked on fishing boats as a ship’s nurse, but there was also hard physical labour. By then twenty three and a half stone, she was fit and well able to cope with the work. “The doctors said my pulse was better than John Walker’s,

44 to his 46.” Things changed after a serious fishing boat accident. “I broke two vertebrae in my back and crushed another two.” She developed Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), which can follow injury. There is severe pain, swelling, skin problems and sometimes Feebe’s concentration is affected. ACC at first did not recognise RSD, though the specialist they finally called in did at first glance. The four weeks she then spent at the Auckland pain clinic were the most wonderful treatment you could have, she said. She also got an electric wheelchair. “I was in it 90 per cent of the time and still use it 30 per cent.” Her later improvement she puts down to a herbal ointment. “Onion, garlic and grass juices. It takes away the pain.” Once in Picton Feebe, obviously still disabled, found getting a job impossible. But a local businessman who saw her crafts suggested setting up a cruise boat day market. Feebe followed up and while less than popular with some local retailers, some refusing to serve her, tourists loved it. Fight on though. There were complaints about her stall to the Commerce Commission and she is still working through the issues. Her response has been to escalate and with ongoing formal study in small business management she has opened Feebe-s in a shop near Mariner’s Mall. “I’m here long term,” she says firmly.” My motto is ‘Reasonable prices for all and listen to what the customers want’.”

“Me and my twin brother were cocky’s slaves.”

Family environment nurtures students Boarders in Clarice Johnstone House at Nelson College for Girls experience a strong and supportive family atmosphere and are nurtured to become well rounded, confident, self-reliant young women. Leadership opportunities are available through a variety of activities and a big sister/ little sister scheme is in place so the seniors look after the junior girls. The school hosts a diverse group of students, including international students from countries such as Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Korea and Germany. In 2011 the new Clarice Johnstone Levels was opened as an independent living facility for Year 13 students. The Levels provides these young women with single study bedrooms and shared lounge, laundry and kitchen facilities, giving them more independence to help with the transition into the next phase of their lives.

Our Year 13 students are encouraged into leadership roles to promote the family atmosphere of the boarding community amongst all 150 boarders. Nelson College for Girls provides students with strong academic opportunities and we are proud of our record of academic excellence. Meet the first of the Blenheim Ward Council Candidates Jamie Arbuckle (Sitting councillor)

Jenny Andrews (Sitting councillor)

Jessica Bagge (Sitting councillor)

I stand on performance. Thank you for the chance to represent our community on council. The financial recession is causing difficult times for us all. I am committed to common sense decision making. The Mayor needs to be responsible for council financial plans and policies. Maintenance of council assets need to be a priority and financial decisions need to be prudent. This isn’t a time for luxuries. Our core industries must be supported and sustainable. Our CBD needs a vibrant vision. I have stood on a platform of transparency and accountability. This led to a report into corruption and tendering practises and made recommendations for council to be more transparent. I fully support open communication and consultation processes. We need more community involvement in council decision making and annual plans.

I consider it a great honour and privilege to have served the people of Marlborough as a District Councillor and Deputy Mayor. Marlborough has great potential, still small enough to care about our citizens and their aspirations and concerns. With commonsense, wisdom and careful stewardship we can make it a place for young families across the board to seniors. My interests include Justice of Peace, Musical Theatre, Garden Marlborough, Rotary, Nativity Church, grandchildren, family and friends. I am passionate about Marlborough being progressive, user friendly for all, while mindful of escalating rate demands. My strength on council is working for the senior folk of the community, making Marlborough accessible to all, while supporting our younger ratepayers. I have both time and commitment to work for you. Please contact me: jennylandrews@xtra.co.nz or phone 035785580

I am a mother, businesswoman and current first term councillor. I believe in Marlborough and that strong positive leadership is crucial for the future of our region. We need a vibrant community for businesses to invest in and nurture pathways for our youth. We need a “can do” attitude from Council. We need more transparency and accountability in Council processes and meetings, so that you can see how decisions are made. We need sound, informed environmental planning, sensible development, a strong education platform for our children; community and health services when and where we need them. We have so many opportunities ahead of us. I would like to be part of the new council that advocates and delivers. Vote for Jessica Bagge – a strong voice for community and business.

Brian Dawson

David Dew (Sitting councillor)

I am a candidate because our community needs fresh leadership and a vision to address the big issues. Our population is aging and there are few well-paid jobs to keep our children and grandchildren living and working here. The rate base is not growing and the burden of rates increases is falling on those on fixed incomes who cannot afford it. This cannot continue in such a blessed region with a fantastic landscape and beautiful climate, internationally known for fabulous wines. We need jobs to keep our young people here and to encourage others to move here. Stronger leadership will make the most of what we have and take the pressure off rate-payers. With fresh leadership and a vibrant economy, Marlborough will be a great place for people to live and work.

“Succes is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.” Churchill’s comments are very apt. Council is a complex $100 million business employing over 200 people and it requires Councillors who have experienced all of those things and who have the battle hardened skills to take Council forward. I have those skills. I ask straight and direct questions and give straight and direct answers. Ask any current Councillor or the Mayor about that if you wish. Past ideas of mine have saved ratepayers large sums. I am also the only Councillor who contunues to contribute original ideas for Council to get funding without increasing rates. I am a longstanding Marlborough Lawyer, chair of Marlborough Lines and have experience in governance unequalled in Marlborough.

Keith Buck I am married to Susan, and we have a blended family of five children and 14 grandchildren. I have lived in Blenheim for almost 40 years. I am passionate about Marlborough, I love its community and believe we have a great future. But I believe Marlborough is being stifled by the costs and bureaucracy imposed by council. And I don’t believe council reflects the dreams and aspirations of its community. I think we can do much better. I will work to reduce both costs and red tape, and will work to make sure that genuine consultation with the community happens before decisions are made, not just as a token gesture afterwards

Picton grills candidates By Glenise Dreaver Some thirty Marlborough Sounds Wards residents attended the “Meet the Candidates” evening held in the Picton School Hall last Thursday. Mayoral candidates Brian Dawson and Jamie Arbuckle attended as did Richard Feather, who is also standing for a Sounds Ward seat. Mayoress Thelma Sowman read a speech from Mayor Alistair Sowman, who was at an EQC meeting in Ward. Chair Margaret McHugh pointed out that it was “his duty” to attend that meeting. She was less understanding about sitting councillor Graeme Barsanti’s apology, pointing out that he had not attended three years ago either. With Trevor Hook also apologising, David Oddie was the only Sounds Wards councillor who attended. Blenheim Ward councillor Jessica Bagge attended and was asked by the chair to discuss the issues for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, for which she is also standing. David Oddie, asked to discuss the ferry terminal issue and Clifford Bay, said Picton would survive the removal of the terminal, though the decision was out of council hands. “But there has been zero information from central government, and we’ve been to them several times.” He said it was “astounding” that Picton had to wait 15 years for the bus shelter at the i-site, which provided complex engineering challenges, and that funding would

Spring market for toy library refurbishment By Kristy Martin The Picton Toy Library’s Spring Market is back again following the success of last year’s event. There will be over 30 stalls, a monster toy sale, plants, handmade jewellery, tasty food, quirky buskers and a variety of kids’ activities. Money raised will help the toy library’s “dilapidated” building get a much-needed facelift, said

market day coordinator Haylee Milham. “It’s a fundraiser for the toy library building which needs a bit of exterior work,” she said. “It will go ahead rain or shine and if people want to donate toys for our monster toy sale they can contact me.” The event will be held from 10am on Saturday October 5 at the Toy Library grounds on Market Street.

David Oddie gives his presentation (far right) watched on by Richard Feather, Jamie Arbuckle, Brian Dawson and Mayoress Thelma Sowman.

come from the forestry rev fund so it would have no rating impact. He did not escape a mauling, however, when asked about age and gender issues. His query about whether he was boring people was met with a brisk “Yes!” from the Chair. Richard Feather said he was standing in the Sounds Ward, because Picton was where it had all started for him. “Once a Picton boy, always a Picton boy.” He floated the idea that council should provide skills and employment for the young by building a house, raffling it, then starting a new one. “There is always loose change that could be used for something like that.” Jamie Arbuckle was introduced by the chair as a man “very much changed in appearance”. He said he was standing on his performance. On Sounds needs, he said Picton

needed to be better promoted as a destination, with more cruise ships attracted and better freight movements. An extension of the Waitohi wharf would help make these things possible. Mayoral hopeful Brian Dawson was the only candidate to speak without notes. He said of sitting mayor: “Alistair is a lovely man and a very good civic leader. But it is well and truly time for a change.” Our biggest challenge was growth, he said. It was the only way to keep rates down. Mayor Sowman’s presentation emphasised his experience and credibility. Marlborough needed someone who understood the role, he said, able to present a case to central government. “People have no idea what is really required until they were in the job and Marlborough was a $100m business.”

Bikefit Marlborough

When cyclists set out on the road, mountain track or hillside how well their bikes perform comes down to several factors. For someone starting out it’s important they be fitted with a bike that is comfortable and suited to their level of fitness. The same is said for athletes. How well they perform comes down to the quality of their equipment and their ability to ride comfortably and to the conditions. This is where Bikefit Marlborough excels, Where there’s a Will, providing the region with specialised inforthere’s a way. mation, advice and a full range of bikes and accessories for all ages and abilities. Owners Brent Ackroyd and Graham Henderson believe a good fit is essential and along with their highly skilled team, guide people to the bike that’s fitted to their unique shape Ph: 027 285 7514 • Office: 572 5200 and style. Email: will@willpowerelectrical.co.nz “It’s important to us that people are confident and that they have all the information and knowledge needed to get the most out of their cycling,” they said. cyclists are beginning to have their bikes serviced by Bikefit Marlborough ready for summer riding. Now is also a good time for first time cyclists to talk to the team about getting started. “We can get you set up and advise on what local clubs are around and when events are scheduled throughout the region,” Brent said. The Bikefit Marlborough team: Specialising in professional bike fitting and sales is Graham who is also up-to-date with information on all things cycling in Marlborough. In the servicing department is Brent and Merrick who specialise in all services and repairs, while in sales is Susie, an internationally award winning athlete who has recently returned from the Long Course Duathlon Age Group World Champs in Switzerland where she won bronze. Wheeling into Wonderland Photos by Kristy Martin The spotlights were on, red carpet laid out and cameras ready. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Clubs of Marlborough to witness the Year 12 and 13 students roll in for the highly anticipated college formal.

And roll in they did - on floats, in caravans, classic cars, trucks and trailers. Some hired party buses, while others sped in on scooters. The 2013 combined colleges formal had the theme Wonderland and with it came a night of fun and glamour for the seniors of Marlborough girls' and boys' colleges.

Second pigeon race held Last Saturday the Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held their second race from Kaikoura an airline distance ( straight line ) of 100km. Although a little cooler the day dawned sunny and bright allowing for very good visibility just the thing for a good result in these early season races. The 98 Blenheim birds were released at 8am along with other birds from the lower North Island and because of the lovely weather they made very good times as was expected. The first position went to Mrs. Shirley Morrison her bird achieving a velocity (speed) of 1314.14 meters per minute followed closely by husband Donald Morrison at 1309.61 mpm. The 3rd and 4th positions also went to the Spring Creek area with last weeks winner Carl Kirkwood’s bird doing 1302.29 mpm. and daughter Sindy Kirkwood 4th doing 1291.53 mpm. Nearly all birds were home to their lofts within just minutes of each other most covering the distance in around 1 hour 25 minutes. This bodes well for next weekend’s race which is the next step south at Christchurch.

Taekwondo sisters deliver the goods Story and photo by Kristy Martin Olivia and Nadia Chan-Roberts use the money they earn delivering Sun newspapers to help fund their love of taekwondo. The two Blenheim sisters are off to Christchurch this weekend to compete in a South Island taekwondo tournament, which their mum Emilie says they have worked hard to fundraise for. “They use all their paper delivery money and they help us out with our cleaning business, plus the club has been very supportive,” Emilie said. “It’s not cheap when you have to travel to a tournament and then you’ve got accommodation and entry costs on top of that.” The sisters, aged 11 and nine, are both members of the Blenheim Olympic Taekwondo Club and most recently competed in the nationals at Porirua. Olivia, a 4th gup blue belt, won a gold medal at the event, as did fellow club member Kevin Elsmore, a senior 3rd gup competitor. Following in the footsteps of their older brother, Dominic, the girls took up the sport
