The New Funky Fish, owned by Calvert James, has been highly commended.

Story and photos by Kristy Martin Hot chip fans are spoilt for choice, with three Blenheim chip shops receiving honours in a national competition. Codfathers, Smoove and The New Funky Fish were all Highly Commended in The Chip Group’s 2013 Best Chipshop Competition. Highly commended awards were given for chips that were less than nine per cent fat. Seven shops between Christchurch and Nelson were recognised, with three of them in Blenheim. It is a back-to-back win for Teresa Daly and Glenn Palatchie from Codfathers, on High Street, whose product received the same accolade in the biennial competition back in 2011. “The perfect chip comes down to cooking times, oil temperature, the type of potato and the oil,” said Teresa. “We filter our oil often,” Glenn added. Winners again: Glenn Palatchie and Teresa Daly from Codfathers.

New Tua Marina history book By Kristy Martin A new Tua Marina and Waikakaho history book is about to be launched, detailing the rich background of the region and the fascinating lives of its people. The book is called The Calm Beyond, which is the literal translation for Tua Marina, and has been a long time in the making, after the community decided back in the ’80s that the 1959 version needed an update. It has been written and edited by local author Cynthia Brooks, who has numerous history books to her credit, with the help of a dozen committee members and many, many people in the Tua Marina region. Cynthia says given that geographically speaking, Tua Marina and the Waikakaho Valley occupy a very small landmass, the wealth of the district’s history is nothing short of amazing. “The pioneers were great at gathering stories and so the book is not all serious, it is full of laughs and funny stories, interesting anecdotes.” The Calm Beyond reflects on a community which officially began with the surveying of the land for settlement in 1859. Back further to 1843, Tua Marina was also the place of the first and only clash between European and Maori in the South Island. In the 170 years since it has been richly productive across diverse enterprises such

as gold, flax, grains and seeds, cheese production, hops, bricks and more recently forestry and grapes. It is also the story of generations of people who have worked hard on the land and off it and have contributed their time and talents to form the close-knit community it is today. The book will be launched on Labour Day weekend, with an official ceremony.

Police inbrief Street light shooters wanted

Offenders have been shooting at several street lights in the Rapaura Rd and State Highway 6 area. Police ask anyone who sees this dangerous behaviour to call police immediately using the 111 number.

Crash driver flees scene At 7.40am on Wednesday police attended a crash at the intersection of Hutcheson Street and Nelson Street. The driver of a Mitsubishi Pajero failed to give way and collided with a Suzuki Swift. Nobody was injured in the

accident and the driver of the Pajero fled the scene. Police will be speaking to him when he is located.

Truck hits paddock stock At 12.10pm on Tuesday a truck and trailer unit left the road on State Highway 6 near the intersection of Long Valley Road. The truck went through a section of fencing and hit stock that was in the paddock. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined

Global picnic Brain injury associations are holding picnics across the world this weekend, with a local event in Blenheim’s Pollard Park. The global picnic will feature a sausage sizzle for gold coin donation and people are asked to BYO a non-alcoholic drink and something to sit on. The picnic will be held on Saturday from 11.30am to 1.30pm and is aimed at increasing awareness about brain injuries.

Women urged to vote Inset: John Reuhman from EcoWorld Aquarium says broken lights have made the Picton foreshore dangerous at night.

Danger in the dark By Kristy Martin John Reuhman from EcoWorld Aquarium says the lights on the Picton foreshore have been broken for close to two months, making the darkened area a danger to pedestrians and haven for vandals. Mr Reuhman says night-time vandals damaged several of the flower beds in the area and also removed cones, one of which was later found on the beach.

He believes it is only a matter of time before something more serious happens. “We’ve already got inadequate lighting on the foreshore as it is, but now we’ve got none at all. “It’s very dangerous. “There are people walking off the ferry at night in the dark. “It is only a matter of time before someone comes to harm.” Mr Reuhman has contacted

council with his concerns. He also spoke with electrical contractor Cresswells, who he claims reported the lights as having “major faults”. Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler agreed there were “big issues” with the foreshore lighting. “There is still lighting on the foreshore, but there are quite a lot of broken lights, we accept that,”

he said. “We are fixing what we can. “We would like to do a major upgrade but it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.” The Picton Foreshore Management Plan was also a factor, he said. “Any upgrade has to be done in a sensible way and in line with future development.”

Three Blenheim chip shops honoured Continued from page 1 To enter the competition, shop owners had to complete an online Chip Group training course and submit their product for fat testing. Claire Austin from Smoove is surprised at how popular her chips have become since she took over the small Queen Street

shop 10 months ago. She uses a state-of-the-art Spin Fresh cooker, the only one of its kind in New Zealand, to remove the oil. “It spins at 350 revs per minute and gets nearly 40 per cent of the oil off, which you can’t do by hand,” Claire said. “We’re a daily takeaway shop

so it’s just a sideline for our business but it’s proven to be extremely popular.” The New Funky Fish owner Calvert James used to own a chip shop in Nelson. He came to Blenheim four months ago and says his Moran Street business has become incredibly busy.

“A good chip is golden and crisp, but soft on the inside,” he said. “There is a secret to putting out the perfect chip, but I’m not going to tell you what it is.” The overall winner for the region was Victory Square Fish and Chips in Nelson.

Justice Minister Judith Collins said yesterday marked the 120th anniversary of New Zealand women gaining the right to vote, the first country where women won that right. “Today we encourage eligible voters to use the very rights the suffragettes fought for,” she said.

Last meeting for current council The last meeting of the current Marlborough District Council before the election results are announced in the second week of October was held yesterday. It included a valedictory for retiring councillor Francis Maher. The new council will meet on October 31, when they will be sworn in.

Theft from unlocked vehicle A vehicle parked outside the Wairau Hospital on Wednesday was entered and a mobile phone taken. There were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle. Police are reminding people to ensure the their vehicles are locked and all valuable items are not in view.

Local opportunities from America’s Cup

Huge local business opportunities are flowing from the current America’s Cup challenge. The Naiad team in Picton have been at the forefront, designing and overseeing the construction of the four high-technology chase boats for Oracle Team USA. And during the first stages of the America’s Cup in San Francisco, they were there following up further business opportunities, as well as getting out on the water in one of their own boats. They were able to watch the action close up, at the same time assessing what has been a more than satisfactory performance on the boats they have designed. What many people do not realise is the huge amount of business opportunity and the level of New Zealand input on both sides, he says. It’s not just that the Oracle manager is Sir Russell Coutts, and their shore manager is Kiwi

Mark Turner, the sailing, design and both the shore and onboard teams also feature many New Zealanders. “Like rugby, sailing is an area where we punch well above our weight,” he says. “Kiwis dominate the top echelons.” One outstanding example is that improvements in Oracle’s performance came about after at least 10 New Zealand boatbuilders from the North Island were flown up to help with the task. “It amazes me that more is not said about New Zealand’s performances and the benefits that have already accrued to the country and the industry especially. The general public don’t see that.” The area of technology offers great opportunity he said. As well as their own design work there were other South Island firms already doing business, including one Dunedin firm that had pioneered a lot of the TV

Corporate theatre seats snapped up By Kristy Martin Local business owners have quickly snapped up seats at the new ASB Theatre in Blenheim. Theatre Trust fundraisers launched a seat sponsorship program last month, encouraging businesses and members of the public to purchase their own seats to help raise the final $2 million needed for the new theatre. All corporate seat sponsorship packages have been signed up at a cost of $24,000 for four seats. A third of the $10,000-each plati-

num seats were also snapped up immediately. Allan Newman from Newman Graphics in Renwick purchased a seat, complete with name plaque, which will give him priority seating for shows when the new venue opens. “I think it’s a wonderful thing and something that everybody should get behind,” Mr Newman said. “I can’t wait to get my bum on that seat and see some wonderful shows!” Trust fundraising manager Ross Anderson

said the initial response from the public had been even more enthusiastic than expected. “We knew people would be interested, but the seats are selling far more quickly than we’d imagined,” he said. Mr Anderson says although all the corporate seat rows had gone there are still other options available. The seats come in platinum, gold, silver and bronze categories at a cost of $1500, $3000, $5000 and $10,000 each.

Vote for Health Board Dear Ed, Our Wairau Hospital, needs your help! Don’t waste the opportunity. Please vote for candidates standing for the NMDHB [Nelson Marlborough District Health Board]. There are plenty of very capable candidates from the Marlborough region and we need strong Marlborough representation on a DHB where most management and board members are Nelson

based. All of us voting on both voting papers – the council and the DHB will ensure we get our voices heard. The STV voting system allows DHB candidates to be ranked in order of our preference and we only have to rank the candidates we want to vote for. Let’s protect our hospital and let’s get voting. John Kershaw

Council Elections Dear Ed, After recently attending the meeting of candidates at the Elim Centre, I got to thinking how fortunate we in Blenheim are that we have the new up and coming candidates who possibly will inject new ideas and blood into our dull and uninteresting Council. Some Councillors have been in the job far too long! The likes of Adelle Galloway, David Lloyd, Laressa Shenfield would be able supporters to Jamie Arbuckle and Jessica Bagge. What Blenheim needs is no closed door meetings and open transparency. I was shocked to hear

that Council has a huge monetary debt, surely we should live within our means. A number of sitting Councillors don’t seem to realise rates revenue still belongs to ratepayers. Council is holding it in trust and must spend it wisely rather than be extravagant by splashing out on theatres, parking buildings and a concrete park in Queen Street! It seems Council employ’s over 200 staff yet hires expensive consultants from outside Marlborough whom are not familiar with our area - more wasted money! Ken Lloyd

Marlborough’s Future

Vote #1

Dear Ed, At least one mayoral candidate and some of the incumbent councillors believe Marlborough for salvation, needs to accelerate its economic growth, its population and pursue a “think big” philosophy. Salvation from what? Marlborough has a quality of life now. Thirty years ago it was even better. Which poses the question what benefits does bigger bring? Economically what will it do? Farming in its wider sense is the backbone of Marlborough’s economy just as it is nationally.

That won’t change. The trick is to locally develop “added value” to products instead of exporting “raw.” e.g. logs, wool, meat, etc. Double Marlborough’s population and services like sewer, storm water, water supply, traffic flow etc, become inadequate. Result is major costs for ratepayers with expensive upgrades in size. Candidate Chris Wolfe at the Elim Church challenged the blind quest for growth. He fled Auckland for Blenheim. That says it all doesn’t it? Don Coyote

The BBQ Cat has been a huge hit with couples getting married as well as midwinter Christmas parties and birthdays, she said. "People always have fun whether they come on board to relax, go swimming or to enjoy some fishing along the way. "We quite often take people up onto beaches which is great for those who haven't seen any or a lot of the Pelorus

Sounds. It's not just the tourists which love it, locals love to cruise around the Sounds and even stop for a game of golf in Nopera Bay." Hiring the BBQ Cat is affordable and can be any time of year. "We are totally flexible to what people want. Any day of the week we can operate and we have all the comforts including large toilets and a shower. Happy Birthday Bunty Ninety three years young on Wednesday September 18 and Oamka Aviation Heritage Museum staff, trustees and volunteers were out in force to wish Bunty Bunt a happy birthday. Bunty, of Picton, is a former World War II Hurricane and Spitfire pilot. He still regularly volunteers as a centre guide and his experience and reminiscences add a whole new dimension to any tour. But he’s a modest man, and asked the secret of survival through those dark days, has dismissed any suggestion of special courage and skills. “It was luck. Sheer luck,” he is on record as saying, adding that you would see everything coming at you and think: “They can’t miss.” But they did, and his dedication to Omaka is just one example from well over sixty years of work and service for the local community.

Meet the candidates Today we run a second group from the 19 candidates who are contesting the seven places in the Blenheim Ward in the MDC elections. Liz Collyns

John Leggett (sitting candidate)

Adelle Galloway

I bring these skills and experiences to the Council table: Over 30 years of voluntary work in this community. Six years running a small business, currently work ing on our small vineyard. Extensive knowledge of how organisations work from a governance perspective. My term as a Canterbury Community Trust trustee taught me about managing a lot of money and how important due process is. I am a careful listener and can evaluate what is said and not said. An undertaking to try to balance the diverse needs of this community as fairly and impartially as I can. My vision of Marlborough is of an inclusive community building on what we have to ensure MDC is responsive to the needs of its community for the greatest good.

I am deputy chair of the Community and Financial Planning, chair of the Liquor Licensing Sub-Committee, and a member of the Assets and Services and Regional Transport committees. A lawyer in Blenheim for 27 years, I am honorary solicitor for several community and sports organisations. Council’s core function and priority must be providing infrastructure services here. I will also promote further developing our event strategy and Marlborough as a destination. Visitors spend - and help create vibrancy, further development of cycleways, walkways and sports facilities to provide all with the opportunity to maintain health and independence, reviewing our rating system and roading levies to ensure a fairness, continued development of Smart & Connected and a business-friendly environment.

My vision for Marlborough is ‘Happy, Healthy and Safe people’. To achieve this, these are the top five priorities for council as I see it. Put people first. Respect our land and resources. Foster econom ic growth and development. Value our rich community resources. Future proof Marlborough. For good-quality infrastructure and public services that are most cost-effective for households and businesses there are three questions that must be asked by council. Is it efficient? Is it effective? Is it appropriate for now and for the future of Marlborough? Vote Adelle Galloway! Allow me to be instrumental in a new council that puts people first, asks the difficult questions, makes common sense decisions, and focuses on a prosperous future for Marlborough.

Erin Creswell

David Lloyd

I am Marlborough born and raised, with a background in health, wellbeing and child education. I am also passionate about fitness. I would push for the council to offer more facilities, education and support for the many varying types of health issues in Marlborough. Being a mother of two young girls, I would also like to see more opportunities and activities for the youth of Marlborough, that are still affordable to families. I would like to see more Marlborough businesses getting contracts locally. I feel it is time to hear the opinions of more people of Marlborough.

I’m Marlborough born and raised. I am standing for council this year because I believe I can bring something the others can’t. I have the ability to use the lessons I’ve learned as a young person to encourage other youth to take greater pride in themselves and their community. I want to help young people become more socially aware while forming a stronger bond between Marlborough youth and older generations. I stand for safer streets, more strategic placement of CCTV and crime reduction resources, a total ban of synthetic cannabis in our community, and the retention of our assets. Youth training, employment and a more family-friendly Marlborough, are my priority issues.”

My hope in this year’s election is for a fresh approach to issues that affect you, and your interests. My desire to work as your councillor is driven by the thought that for any business to succeed, and this council is your business, there must be ongoing changes with the people that oversee governance, and represent your interests. It is very easy for us all to stick with the tried and true, but just like our All Black team hard changes have to be made for the good of the game. So my desire is that you will vote me on as a new member of the team that will achieve the best outcomes for you the residents, and for a more open approach.

1954 Vincent Black Shadow Although Omaka Classic Cars is, as the name suggests about cars, there are one or two special bikes on display and none more so than the Vincent Black Shadow 1954. This significant collector’s item is actually a replica, each part lovingly created and put together by Blenheim man, Graham Jameson. Graham and his second wife moved to Blenheim at the beginning of the year, but his passion for Vincent motorbikes stretches back to the UK when he was just 12 years old. On leaving a church service with the family one Sunday, his older brother told him he wanted to show him a motorbike - it was a Vincent. But it wasn’t until the bike was driven away that Graham was smitten. “That thing took off so quick I just had to have one!” It was just seven years later, in 1968 when Graham was 19 that he owned his first one. It cost him £39.10s. He explains, “They were cheap because no one wanted old UK bikes then. They were heavy and cumbersome and leaked oil all over the place!” Also, Japanese bikes had started to come on the market a few years earlier and were proving very popular. This bike was the first of five that he would own and he’s currently working on number six as well as restoring a Steib German sidecar. Graham also owns a Daimler V8 – his second one which he bought and restored after it had been sitting in a garage in Christchurch for 18 years. Vincent Motorcycles was a British manufacturer based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. They produced bikes from 1928 to 1955 and their 1948 Black Shadow was at the time, the world's fastest production motorcycle. Graham remembers his old friend Burt Munro with a smile. “Burt didn’t like the Vincent bikes much – he knew they were a lot quicker that his Indian!” In 1955 the company ceased production after experiencing heavy financial losses. One of Graham’s fondest memories was jumping on his 1952 Vincent with his oldest son riding behind him and his first wife and

their two other children in the Busmar Astral sidecar. It was 1977 and the family were off on a touring holiday right around the South Island from Christchurch to Christchurch. Graham says it was hard to drive with the sidecar on as you couldn’t lean – just had to steer. “It wasn’t particularly safe”. He added.

By way of explanation, Graham added that everyone had sidecars back in the UK as it was so hard to get a car licence. Once you had your motorbike licence which was pretty straightforward, there was no additional test to ride with a sidecar! In New Zealand, cars were far more part of the culture so you didn’t

see many bikes with sidecars. Graham sums up his enthusiasm, “Motorbikes are a convenient, easy-sized way to express yourself – cars are beautiful but so much more involved with all those panels”. He concludes, “And any restored Vincents are worth a king’s ransom!”

Harris Best Panelbeaters Best known by the car attached high up on the side of its building, Harris Best Panelbeaters in Renwick has enjoyed an extensive history in Marlborough. The business has been family owned and operated since 1967 when Mike Harris first started. The iconic Renwick building was built in 1972 on High Street and today it still continues to gain plenty of interest from people passing by. Mike’s son Trevor joined the business as an apprentice working under Rowan Lee (now the owner of Peter Ray Homes Marlborough). When Rowan left Trevor continued working alone in the business before Allan Best became a partner in 2003. Seven years later Trevor bought Allan out and has since continued to service the Marlborough region and beyond. “I have people from all parts of Marlborough who bring their vehicles, farm machinery and even grape harvesters to us for panel beating

Rural truck set for restoration

Vote 1

Trevor Hook

for Council “Energy Enthusiasm Experience”

trevor@temahia.co.nz

Authorised by Trevor Hook, Temahia Bay.

By Kristy Martin A 60-year-old Austin Loadstar truck first registered to Broadbridge Transport in Renwick is set to be restored by a farming couple in Nelson. Weir Broadbridge, owner of livestock transport company Broadbridge, said he was quite surprised to discover one of his company’s original trucks was still up and running. As far as he knows, truck no. 3 is the only survivor of the original fleet. The current owners are Don and Kaye Register, who are from Blenheim but now live in Nelson. They say the 1953 truck “needs a bit of work”, but is still used on their farm, Homebush. “It still runs, mechanically it is in good order,” Mr Register said. “It just needs stripping down now, sandblasting and painting.” Mr and Mrs Register are the seventh owners of the vehicle, which has clocked about 400,000km and was previously used to spread lime and fertiliser. “It would be very nice to have it restored and drive it back to Blenheim,” Mr Register said.

Another Olympic Committee blunder The New Zealand Olympic Committee has ended up with egg over its face again. You might remember last year the NZOC failed to send in Valerie Adams’ entry for the Olympic Games in London. The latest NZOC embarrassment centres on the America’s Cup. Sir Russell Coutts, a former Olympic gold medallist for New Zealand, was on the NZOC’s mailing list. No-one at the NZOC had the subtlety of thought to realise an email to Coutts asking if he would like to be part of a video congratulating Team NZ on winning was almost like asking Springboks hooker Bismarck Du Plessis to congratulate the All Blacks for their win over the Springboks last weekend. Firstly, because the cup at that stage had not been won (fingers crossed for today’s race) and secondly, and worse, because Coutts is in the opposite camp as CEO of the Oracle team.

19

Blenheim Toyota Chris Tobin

And once this debacle was uncovered the NZOG boss Kereyn Smith didn’t exactly cover herself in glory with her response either. No doubt Coutts has bigger problems to consider rather than this sorry little saga given that his neck is probably on the block. Do you think the 16-year-old golfing wonder Lydia Ko should turn professional? She finished a magnificent runnerup at the Evian championship in France last weekend, the final women’s major of the year, and catapulted to a new world ranking of No 5. The manner in which she nipped at the heels of the eventual winner Norway’s Suzann Pettersen all the way in the final round shows she has the temperament and the grit required. Ko is obviously good enough to win a major. Why wait? Turn professional Lydia.

Kickboxer wins first fight By Kristy Martin Blenheim kickboxer Sinead Travers will have to get used to bruises and bleeding noses after stepping into the ring for her first full contact fight. She won. The Blenheim Kickboxing member is the only female from the club who has taken the step from Muay Thai training to competition after she took up the sport in January this year. “It was pretty intense,” said Sinead of the Night of Wrecking 11 competition at Fight Club Nelson. “Stepping into the ring to beat someone up was quite intimidating. “There was lots of hard training, lots of bruises, a few bloody noses.” Sinead’s boyfriend influenced her interest in the sport, which she says has given her confidence and discipline. “I’ve never done anything like this, I’m usually the quiet one,” she laughed. The 22-year-old was joined by five fellow Blenheim fighters, Kyle Yates, Mike Washington, Paul McKay, William Seward and Vincent Redwood in the September 7 contest, attended by about 250 spectators. Mike won his fight, while Kyle and William had to stop for injuries. Vincent and Paul lost by points, but it was also Vincent’s first time in the ring. “It was good fun and a great challenge, physically and mentally,” Vincent said. “I didn’t expect it to be easy.” Trainer Rajai Shram said he was pleased with the efforts of the team, and all had done their club proud. Blenheim Kickboxing Club trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Renwick Community Hall. “It would be great to see more girls getting involved,” Sinead said.
