Mystery donation

$500 cash left in school letterbox

Story and photo by Kristy Martin A mystery donor with a big heart has left $500 cash in the letterbox of Grovetown School. School secretary Debbie Wallis said it was a huge shock to find a bundle of $20 notes inside a plain envelope addressed to the school. Along with the cash was a handwritten note that said “donation to school”. There were no other clues as to who might have left the unexpected gift. “It was really bizarre,” Debbie said. Richard Gilbert, owner of the Powerboat Centre Marlborough, says lifejackets are vital for boaties.

Lifejacket safety demo to be held next month By Kristy Martin The Powerboat Centre Marlborough is inviting members of the public to come along and learn how to properly fit a lifejacket in the wake of two fatal boating accidents this month. An open night will be held at the Blenheim store, in which people can watch safety demonstrations, including how to select the right lifejacket and correctly adjust the straps. The initiative follows the deaths of two boaties in separate incidents in the Marlborough Sounds this month. Nelson man Charlie Gallagher, 52,

died at the weekend after being swept overboard by a wave on his 11-metre yacht. Earlier this month, local man Craig Partridge fell from his private launch and despite extensive searches, his body was not found. Neither man was wearing a lifejacket. “While we feel remorse for the families of these people, we believe the incidents once again highlight the importance of lifejackets,” Powerboat Centre Marlborough manager Dianne Kennedy said.

“It’s not just about wearing a lifejacket, it’s about having one that fits.” She said lifejackets should be worn at all times by every person on a boat. You can even get lifejackets to fit newborn babies, she said. Lifejacket safety demonstrations will be held in-store on October 24 from 4pm to 7pm. Use of flares and other life-saving devices will also be discussed. Nelson man Mr Gallagher was sailing towards Picton when he was swept overboard from his Elliot racing yacht, Mrs Jones, on Saturday.

His sailing companion was able to secure a tether to him, but was unable to get him back onboard, police said. A rescue helicopter winched him out of the water but he was pronounced dead shortly after. Back on September 3, Marlborough winegrower Craig Partridge, 45, fell overboard at Endeavour Inlet about 2am. Police, Coastguard and Navy searches recovered a jacket belonging to him but his body was not recovered.

British military band comes to Blenheim Britain’s renowned Band of the Royal Marines will be performing in Blenheim this weekend in one of only four New Zealand concerts. Famed throughout the world for their immaculate appearance, drill and musicianship, the bandsmen and women of the Royal Marine Band combine military precision and discipline with an artistic interpretation that places them in the top level of musical ensembles. Blenheim residents are fortunate, as this will be the band’s only South Island

stop in their New Zealand tour, with the other concerts being held in Auckland, Wellington and Wanganui. The performance has been organised by the British High Commission in Wellington and the Marlborough District Council. The concert will be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre from noon on Sunday. Proceeds will go to the Marlborough Hospice and Help for Heroes charity in the UK.

Mystery donation for Grovetown School Continued from page 1 “The postman delivers our mail right to my office so we don’t check the box every day. It might have been there two or three days. “It’s a lot of money to just leave in a letter box for someone.” The students have described their surprise and excitement at the discovery. “We are awesomely excited,” said Jake Brydon, 8. They have even compiled a list of items they would like to spend the money on, all ways that could improve the school and help “make a difference”, which is their motto. Bad weather has forced the Rainbow Ski Area to close for the rest of the 2013 season. According to staff, recent unfavourable weather combined with the warmest and driest winter on record had left the snowpack on the ski field in a state unsuitable for skiing and snowboarding. “All of our staff at Rainbow give their sincerest thanks to all of our customers for the enthusiastic support and patronage this past winter,” the ski rainbow website said.

The money will most likely be spent on two child-sized bee suits because the school recently acquired its own bee farm. “We got them to learn about bees because we were interested in the topic,” explained principal Selena Tonks. “The honey was just a bonus.” Debbie said the 48-student school was quite small, so the money would be a big help. “We just wanted to let the person know that it was a lovely gesture and we will put it to good use,” she said.

Meet the candidates Today we run the final group of MDC candidates from among the 19 who are contesting the seven seats in the Blenheim Ward Sue Cresswell

Russell Montgomery

Michael Mooney

Having lived and worked in Marlborough most of my life, I have seen many changes which have bought employment into the area. Some think the empty shops in the CBD is not problem. I do. The Speights Ale House should be sitting proud on our riverbank. Just think of the foot traffic that would have bought to town. Most of our ratepayers recently had properties devastated. Did that bring reductions in rates? No. Still the annual increase. This we need to address. The aesthetically pleasing policy introduced by the council to cover many areas in the rural areas and Sounds has upset many. It is time to stand up and fight for your rights and beliefs.

Eight years ago, I decided to stand for council. As council’s Reserves and Amenities Manager, I enjoyed working with previous councillors and the community. Now, after four years travelling overseas with my wife Robyn and setting up my own business, the time is right for me to fulfil my ambition of becoming an elected representative of my community. I have a strong community focus, considerable experience and I know how to get things done. I am an active member of the following groups: Marlborough Search and Rescue, coordinator of the Alzheimer’s Search Group, Alternate Controller for Civil Defence, the WHO Safer Community project and the Good Homes for Good Living committee. I speak up for what’s right and have the experience, commitment and drive to have a positive impact on council.

The voters have a choice. Business as usual. The same people, same result. Look at their decisions. Theatre. Roundabouts, urban parks, bus stops, empty parking building, rate rises well above the rate of inflation. Other areas with faltering services applied unfairly. Drinking water for Renwick and Seddon. We clearly have two teams. Old and new. This council is wealthy in assets , resources and revenue. However, ratepayers are bleeding from uninformed decisions. Decisions originate from non-elected managers rather than elected, accountable representatives. We need monitoring, auditing of tendering, and an independent panel for complaints. Retail/town parking, water, land quality, youth are “now problems”. We need a vision. We need change now. Most people know I will stand up for my employers. Stop the waste. Reduce the burden.

It is with great pride that I stand for re-election to our District Council. Raised in Blenheim, I have been a proud younger member of our community for the past 40 years. I have the energy and experience to support my passion to improve the growth and performance of our province. As a local business owner and family man, I offer you my services to ensure the Council performs to the best of its abilities, on issues that really matter. I endeavour to ensure the people of Marlborough are getting value for their rates. Through my experiences as a sitting councillor, administrator, team member and sporting coach, together with my 18 years in business, I believe I have what is needed to continue to help steer our Council in the right direction. I am committed to ensuring Council services and infrastructures are capable of meeting the needs of our province.

Married to Helen, four children As the current chairman of Council’s Assets and Services Committee I have enjoyed the challenges of looking after the people of Marlborough’s assets and the services that help our community. Council must maintain and improve the current standards that have been set with its infrastructure projects and its assets and ensure that all major projects are finished on time, on budget and to a top standard. Other challenging projects I have been involved with include Council’s long term sports facility for the future and also our pensioner housing stock, also looking to the future. I love Marlborough because of its wide open spaces, the weather, the natural beauty, the beautiful parks and facilities, but most important of all is our wonderful caring community who are always prepared to get in behind projects and support each other.

As a parent raising children in Marlborough I am invested in this region! I want to make a lasting contribution to our community. I offer a fresh perspective, positive energy, great communication skills, and a commitment to stay connected. Marlborough’s future concerns me. There are fewer wellpaid jobs that allow families and our youth to stay here. Older residents on fixed incomes and families on lowmiddle incomes simply cannot afford rates rises above the rate of inflation. Sensible spending is critical. We need a council that encourages and supports sustainable business enterprise to create well-paid jobs and secure future opportunities for this generation and those to come. I will ask the hard questions and be a strong voice and driver for our community.

Chris Wolfe It was not my intention to stand for council solely to become a councillor. I felt the need for change. Some candidates advocate growth. To what end, at what speed and at what cost to the essence of Marlborough? I believe we must first work with what we have, honour our current commitments and investigate and promote sustainable opportunities within the region. Council must recognise it’s most important asset - You and our community. To maintain and enhance this asset requires a good deal more empathy and a focus on the wellbeing of the people and ecology of this Marlborough region. Whether you vote for me to facilitate this, or for other candidates who advocate the same, what matters is that you cast your vote for the greater good of Marlborough.

It’s that time of year again... Operation Christmas Child has begun its annual appeal for gift-packed shoeboxes for the children of poverty-stricken Pacific nations. Organiser Nicole Ecklein says this year the boxes will go to Western Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Immediately after the Christchurch earthquakes, she said the numbers of boxes had reduced as people focused closer to home but last year’s collection was excellent. This year, Seddon and Ward have come to the fore, but Nicole and co-organiser Cherie Bary believe that despite that, local donors will give the scheme a boost. Support from local schools is already obvious and filled boxes are arriving at The Sun office in High Street. Empty ones can be obtained here and Cresswell’s Shoes also provides boxes. Filling the boxes is an ideal school holiday activity for children, who delight in choosing the small gifts and toys. The holidays run from Saturday September 28 to Sunday October 13 and the completed boxes will be picked up from schools, and the Sun office, on Wednesday October 16. The boxes are filled and labelled for gender and age groups and must include all new contents due to customs requirements. A list of suitable contents is available when you pick up the box. Toothbrushes are particularly valuable, given the growing exposure to sugar products. (Toothpaste tubes can leak, so are not included, nor can chocolate and other sweets.) “But soap is great.”

Special needs students from schools across Marlborough took part in the Schools Aquatics Ribbon Day, a Special Olympics New Zealand event.

Participation key for swimmers By Kristy Martin Students involved in the Special Olympics New Zealand’s swim day on Monday discovered first-hand that participation is more important than winning. Special needs students from schools across the region came together for the Marlborough Schools Aquatics Ribbon Day, which was held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 in Blenheim. The annual event was open to those aged eight and up. “The emphasis is on participation rather than competition,” said Ongoing Resourcing Scheme teacher Jo Askin. “It’s about being liberated to partici-

Children competed against others of like abilities in walking, kickboarding, freestyle, breastroke and relay races. “It’s about self esteem and confidence plus sport,” said Graeme Bain, Special Olympics New Zealand’s regional sports coordinator. “Everyone gets a ribbon because we are rewarding participation not winning.”

It is a good idea and should be an option. I love kids, but perhaps not in certain situations.

I think it has merit, because there is nothing worse than a baby crying in that situation.

No. I don’t see how it would work and I don’t think it should even be an issue.

Personally I wouldn’t mind it on a long-haul flight. If it’s feasible, then it’s not a bad idea.

Why not? Some people don’t like kids. You should be able to have that choice.

Vernal Equinox Dear Ed, On September 23, the Vernal Equinox, the first day of Spring, brought in Eastertide, named for Eostra, the Goddess of the season while for Maori it’s Te Koanga and Te Wha o Mahuru. Both celebrations are, by far, very ancient forerunners of the very new, unrelated, unseasonal Christian one which superseded them. Egg-related words are obviously from Eostra and my feathered familiars are presently in a nesting flurry! One March/April, when but a tot, a granddaughter declared emphatically, “It’s not Easter - the birdies aren’t hatching their eggs!” From the mouths of babes, eh?

Rachael Foley Koromiko I think it’s fair enough. I’ve been on many flights with upset children. If you don’t have kids of your own it can be distressing.

Equinox is that time of poise and balance at the moment when darkness and light are of equal length, after which the light increases and the days subtly lengthen (till Daylight Saving from September 29 puts paid to perceiving that!). It’s a time to spring clean and consider where you want to achieve a sense of balance in your life and what newness to bring into it. This chocoholic forgot to buy Easter eggs six months back. I went to the cupboard and ‘twas bare, so to speak! Good job specialty chockies are made for Fathers’ Day nowadays - that recent purchase will do just as well! Happy Eostra! Arvensis

Scrutiny for Clifford Bay Dear Ed, I have been following this story with a lot of interest, having left Blenheim in 1972 . There was always talk of moving Picton to Marfells Beach as they used to say, in the future, even when I lived in town, but this time the NZ Govt seem to be a bit more serious about the move. I wonder if the latest Seddon earthquake has put a brick in the works. Looking at what happened to Lyttleton a few years ago, and especially Japan. Japan spent billions building sea walls in the hope of protecting open areas from a wall of water, but sadly as they found out mother nature has more power than any government, or engineering guru who think they can keep the oceans out in the advent of a major earthquake . Clifford Bay must come under scrutiny for this very same reason, a major earthquake may wreck the port facility thus rendering Clifford Bay a no go zone, if a major wave results from the earthquake the port will be destroyed. Picton does have the advantage of at least being protected from a major ocean event, and so far has escaped any major tremors. Kerry Jacques Tugun QLD

Museum launches new exhibition

By Kristy Martin The concepts of old and new are being redefined in Marlborough Museum’s Inspiration – Transformation exhibition, which was launched yesterday. Inspiration-Transformation, in the museum foyer, is an experimental exhibition that draws on museum collection items to inspire creative new works. The inspiration was provided by twenty items from the existing museum collection, which were presented to the Marlborough

Creative Fibre Guild. Guild members were asked to contribute by creating something new that was recognisably inspired by the colour, form, texture or function of the inspiration pieces. During yesterday’s launch, guild members spoke about their work and the various processes and techniques adopted. Museum chief executive Steve Austin thanked museum textiles experts Pam Saunders and Bev Webb for their help in preparing

and installing the exhibition. He went on to say the guild members had surprised everyone with their range of talent and interpretation. “It is great to see that the collection items still have the power to inspire,” he said. Marlborough Museum has a large textiles collection, and is currently adding the finishing touches to an exhibition relating to dress makers, tailors and milliners of Marlborough called “Local Threads”.

From postie to poster girl for neurosurgery Lyndal Orchard talks to Glenise Dreaver about her journey to health after brain injury. Blenheim postie Lyndal Orchard knew something was wrong when she started crashing on her bike. “I had no balance. I was crashing into post boxes, trees, branches,” she laughs. Then, when on a truck’s deck, she caught the back of her head on a crossbeam as it backed out of a shed. Her symptoms, and the personality change after that, led to a diagnosis of concussion. “I used to be calm, serene. After that I didn’t stand for anything.” With headaches 24/7, she was however, sent to a specialist who sent her for an immediate CT scan. It showed “excessive” fluid on the brain, so within hours she went to Nelson for an MRI. They found that from birth, Lyndal had had undiagnosed hydrocephalus. “I’m surprised you’re still here,” the neurosurgeon said. “This is very, very serious.” In Wellington, the first of fifteen brain surgeries proved unsuccessful. The neurosurgeon apologised. “I’ve failed you.” It had got too dangerous to continue. “I just said ‘Thank you! I’m still here!’.” The next surgery, three months later, succeeded. Lyndal, with a shunt to drain fluid, was again a postie. But the pressure built up so in 2009, she was given a new, improved shunt. Things went badly wrong and she developed a brain infection. “I knew there was a five per cent chance of that.” She was in and out of hospital and on December 22 she was comatose and on a life flight to Wellington.

“The doctor invited us to come in to say goodbye, then she corrected herself and invited us to see her before she went,” said her mother, Carol Orchard. The coma lasted six months. “And I was having massive seizures,” said Lyndal. They led to other painful complications with her hands and feet. At some stage during the ensuing surgeries, she was told compassionate medical staff asked her neurosurgeon whether he should let her go. He refused. “She’s a fighter.” She defied predictions, coming around and spending 18 months in a rehabilitation unit in Wellington, totally disorientated much of the time. “I thought I was in a camping ground,” she says. “The bathroom seemed to be across a paddock. It’s hard to believe this lively and fluent woman had to relearn to swallow, walk, talk, read - and be toilet trained. Back in Blenheim, in a wheelchair, she picked up a “green prescription” and started working with Debbie Healy of the Public Health Organisation (PHO). Debbie, whose fitness regime supplements Lyndal’s medical support, got her to the baths and came in the pool with her. It was 12 months before Lyndal could swim, but she can now and it supports her walking and balance. The wheelchair has been retired. “My neurosurgeon says I’m their poster girl. Whenever he thinks he’s hit a brick wall he says he thinks of me and can go on.” Now she knits for premature babies at Wairau Hospital and volunteers at the hospice, “Because it’s time to give something back.”

Writing your vows There is so much information about writing your own vows for your wedding that it can be a little daunting. You can read about it online and in books, and people will offer you advice and give you tons of rules, outlines, and other information about putting your vows together. But here’s a secret. You can do whatever you want. They are your wedding vows after all! They should reflect who you are, who your partner is, and the relationship that you share. The best vows talk about your past, your present, and your future. They give you a

unique opportunity to make promises and ideals that you will build one of the most important relationships of your life on. Here’s a quick and easy guideline to creating vows. Write two or three sentences about each of these elements. Combined together, they make beautiful vows. - Begin by talking about something you love about your partner, or something they have contributed to their lives. This is a great spot to include an anecdote or story that brings this moment to life. - Next, include some promises. Ones that you will look to guide your marriage.

These can be serious. “I promise to stand by your side, and bring out the best in you, in all adventures.” Or a little sillier; “I promise to laugh at your jokes (most of the time).” End your vows with a look to the future. What do you look forward to sharing in your marriage? What are your goals, your aspirations, the qualities you want to embody as a couple? This outline, combined with the other suggestions, can create really beautiful, personal vows, without a lot of extra work.

Friendly personal service for the day of your dreams

inspired wedding hairstyles

The wedding season is here and bridal parties are all in search of the perfect hairstyle for their special day. Here are some styles inspired by Hollywood celebrities to give you an idea of the endless possibilities for hair. - Tiara-topped braided chignon imparts a polished elegance - For a black tie affair, only the most regal of updos will do. Match this look with the the unabashed drama of an ornate gown. - Fresh flowers add softness and romance to a wedding hairstyle. - A tousled and organic framework that flows into a more carefully crafted low chignon, provides the best of both worlds. It is still formal, but fun and romantic.

- A ponytail is the simplest way to style the hair, making this perfect for a no-fuss bride who still wants to look elegant and polished. - Combining a braid in front and twists in the back for an intentionally unkempt style that feels more casual would be a good alternate option for girls who want a natural-looking updo for a daytime beach wedding. - When it comes to short hair, it’s essential to utilise accessories to give cropped looks that extra panache. It’s also a great excuse to get away with a particularly bold piece of jewellery. - Sleek, pin-straight hair is understated and edgy, while the accent of a subtle piece of jewellery keeps it looking elegant and weddingappropriate.

Bring out your inner-celebrity with some of these Hollywood inspired wedding looks.

A Decade in Business Loyal Clients’ of MCN

The MCN team; Josh, Craig, Pieter, Joseph, Azher and Bronwyn.

What began in a garage as a small IT business has grown considerably over the past decade. Managed Computer Networks (MCN) is marking its 10th birthday by looking back at where it all began and celebrating the clients who have supported the business along the way. MCN was first established on October 7, 2003 following a late night conversation between Azher Mir and Dan Rotar. The two were colleagues at a Blenheim IT business which they learned had been sold. “We felt it was an appropriate time to go out and start our own business to provide clients with a high level of support in a proactive approach. We wanted to develop a different type of connection with clients, one based on mutual trust and a shared goal of IT systems that were reliable and cost effective.“ Azher said. MCN remained a home based business for two years before moving to its current premises at 64-66 High Street. In 2010 Dan decided to leave MCN and his share of the business was purchased by Azher and his wife Bronwyn. “We wanted to bring a new methodology to serving our clients; Managed services fit more

with our philosophy of working in partnership with businesses and their owners. We felt the traditional system of break-fix was counterproductive so instead of going out and fixing each reoccurring problem we wanted to work with clients to permanently solve their IT problems by taking a holistic and proactive view of their systems. Less breakdowns, less frustration.” “Changing MCN from a break-fix to a Managed Services Provider was a win-win for our clients and for us, by basing our pricing on fixed fee, we had to develop systems that were more efficient and required less time to maintain, resulting in a better experience for the client and better revenue for us.” Over the past 10 years MCN has been working with a wide range of clients from small businesses with one PC, through to large scale companies with PC’s scattered all over the globe. Many of their clients today have been with MCN from the beginning. “One of our clients came to us wanting a problem with their printer fixed, frustrated with the lack of resolution from their current IT provider. I visited their office and looked at the problem from a holistic viewpoint, applied a fix, not only to the printer but the computer

network and gave the client some advice. From that initial contact they felt we had the knowledge and support to work with them as they grew from a four computer system to over 100 PC’s with staff located all over the world. “The same can be said for other clients who may not be wanting to grow, but their needs do change over time and we are there to support them the whole way,” Azher said. When asked what was their greatest achievement Azher and Bronwyn replied; “Rewriting our business model to a managed service company was a defining point. We didn’t want to just sell a computer, we wanted to provide a solution based on what was best for our individual clients so approx. 4 years ago we turned our focus away from ‘only fixing what was broken’ to monitoring our clients systems 24 hours a day in order to prevent problems from occurring.” “We’re also very proud of the team here at MCN, they share the same determination of providing excellence.” “But mostly, the trust-based relationship we have with clients is gratifying and something we are really proud of.”

Looking back over a decade

In the beginning, the first MCN team.

Azher and Bronwyn Mir are proud of their team, business achievements and growth.

MCN is a friendly team of IT experts who are constantly exploring innovative technologies in order to bring value and efficiency to your business. MCN pride itself on having the IT services and solutions to solve any problem that may occur, while working hand in hand with clients to support the growth of their business. For a fixed price per month MCN maintains and monitors computer systems and networks, advising clients of any issues and resolving them before they cause any problems. In addition MCN offers everything ‘IT’ from selling computers, printers and servers through to installing complete IT infrastructure solutions. “Come in and meet us today and we will provide thorough care for your technology through one of our tailored packages.”

Vitamin D is a star nutrient these days, as research links it to numerous health benefits. Studies suggest vitamin D may go beyond its well-established role in bone health and reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and more. What makes vitamin D unique is that it is a vitamin and also a hormone your body can make from the sun. Despite the ability to get vitamin D from food and the sun, there is still a large number of people who are deficient. Why? Vitamin D is not abundant in our food choices and the sun is not a reliable source for everyone. Many factors affect the skin’s ability to produce vitamin D, including season, time of day, latitude, air pollution, cloud cover, sunscreen, body parts exposed, colour, and age. Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen and getting vitamin D from food and supplements rather than risk the harmful rays of the sun. Vitamin D is naturally present in few foods. Food manufacturers are fortifying other foods, such as yogurt, cereal, and orange juice, to help consumers fill the nutrient gap in their diets. Ideally, vitamin D is added to a food or beverage that contains calcium. Vitamin D is needed for maximum absorption of calcium from the intestine, helping to build strong bones and teeth. Together with calcium, vitamin D can help prevent osteoporosis in older adults.

Without enough vitamin D, bones can become brittle and prone to fracture. Best Sources of Vitamin D • The sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, but it is hard to quantify how much vitamin D you get from time in the sun and the risk of skin cancer may outweigh the benefits. • Salmon has by far the most Vitamin D of any food • A serving of tuna has a healthy dose of Vitamin D - more than one-third of a daily dose. • Flatfish like sole and flounder have about one-fourth a day’s worth of Vitamin D. • Fortified milk has about one-fifth a day’s worth of Vitamin D (whole milk has more than skim). • Three little ounces of pork can provide as much as almost one-seventh of a daily dose. The most can be found in ribs, and the amount of Vitamin D in pork varies greatly by cut and preparation. You’ll barely get any Vitamin D from a slice of ham. • Two large eggs have about one-tenth of a daily dose of Vitamin D. • Ricotta cheese stands out among cheeses for its relatively high Vitamin D content. It would still take about 24 servings to get your daily dose solely from ricotta cheese (not recommended). That said, ricotta has about five times as much Vitamin D as most other cheeses.

A new website, www.fluoridefacts. govt.nz will help local communities make informed decisions on water fluoridation, Health Minister Tony Ryall says. The most recent nationwide New Zealand survey into oral health showed 40 percent less tooth decay on average for children living in fluoridated areas compared with non-fluoridated areas, Mr Ryall says. He noted that fluoride occurs naturally in water but New Zealand, like several other countries, has low levels. In New Zealand the levels of fluoride used in community water fluoridation

are carefully monitored and within the guidelines of the World Health Organization and other public health agencies. Mr Ryall says tooth decay, which is less likely in individuals when fluoride is added to the water supply, is painful and costly when fillings are needed to treat it. Community water fluoridation is effective, safe and an affordable way to provide the dental health benefits to everyone in a community.” “People should refer to www.fluoridefacts.govt.nz and come to their own conclusions when deciding to support community water fluoridation.”

But through all my tears and heartache, There’s one thing for which I’m glad, That you chose me to share with you, The 45 precious years we had. At John’s request, a private cremation has taken place. A gathering for friends will be held in the Donaldson Civil Training Room, 4 Echodale Place, Nelson on Saturday September 28th at 2pm. The family is eternally grateful to the staff of Hospice Marlborough for their care of John and the compassion shown to all of us. Thanks also to all the Doctors and Nurses in both Nelson and Blenheim who worked so hard to help John. No flowers please but donations to Hospice Marlborough would be greatly appreciated and may be made at the gathering or sent to PO Box 411, Blenheim 7240. Messages to PO Box 2114, Stoke, Nelson 7041. Marlborough Science Fair Prizegiving By Renwick School student Oscar Nott On the night of September 18, kids that competed in the Marlborough Science Fair (and got Highly Commended or Gold) packed into the basketball courts to get their awards that they won at the Marlborough Science Fair. The kids rushed to get good places at the front of the stage. Councillor Terry Sloan, MP Colin King and many other figures of council were there to shake hands with the kids who got awards. The Yr 3-4s got their awards first: Highly Commended, then the gold winners. Then it was the Yr 5-6s. They went in the same order as the Yr 3-4s. Then, finally, the Yr 7-8s and College Students. A college student won The Marlborough Cup and a grand total of $1,000! Also, three schools won $1,500 each. Springlands, Tua Marina and Spring Creek School were all delighted to take their ginormous cheques. Renwick School had lots of students that went up and received their rewards. A Yr 5-6 group’s

exhibit, ‘Creek Trons’, won a gold and 3rd overall in their age group (Nicole B, Kyla O, Eleri J-S, Rose B). Renwick had 11 prizes given but the Creek Trons group was the only that won a gold. Their experiment was about the conductivity of water in two creeks. Both the Yr 5-6 students and the Yr 7-8 students had a great time getting their awards and can’t wait until two years time when they can compete again. *The Sun is proudly supporting the Renwick Accelerated Programme’s student journalists.

Director Tania Wayman said it was about bringing the community together in a way that promoted fun and fitness. “I’m a very slow runner, more like a shuffler actually, but I’ve run in a few events and I really loved how it brought everyone together,” she said.

“We don’t really have anything like that in Picton.” Tania says the event has been a year in the making and will go on to be an annual thing for the Picton community. She and her fellow committee members are all parents of Waikawa Bay students, so they decided the money raised at Marina 2 Marina will go to the school’s fitness circuit. The event will be held on Sunday October 13, with the 9km Marina 2 Marina track going from Picton Marina to Waikawa Marina and back. There is also a 2km kids’ dash and a 13km snout run for the more

serious competitors. Entry cost is $25 until October 12, or $30 on the day. The event is not only in need of participants but marshals too, Tania said. The Picton Men’s Shed and the Lions Club have agreed to help out, but in order to make everyone as safe as possible, more bodies were needed. The day will include a whole festival atmosphere, including music, a bouncy castle, puppeteers, jugglers and market stalls, to be held at London Quay. For more details, visit marina2marina.co.nz.

Local motocross rider on the right track Eight Marlborough riders, including 14-year-old champion Jack Dalton, recently competed in the Canterbury motocross champs. Jack rode in the 13-16 yr 85cc class and was hoping to add the class title to the three MX titles he has picked up this year from previous meetings. The Canterbury motocross champs were held in Omihi, about an hour north of Christchurch, and had about 130 riders from around the South Island competing. The result was another title for Jack, who won four of his five races and also took out the feature race.
