TWICE WEEKLY

Born, educated and a Wairau Hospital-trained nurse, I care about the Top Of The South Health Services. These last three years I have been on the Hospital Advisory Committee which has given me a greater understanding of how the DHB functions. We have a high proportion of elderly people entitled to New

Jessica Bagge Zealand’s best health services. Along with being a popular region for our young families to grow up in we must maintain a sustainable hospital that supports Community Services and therefore ensures the health needs of our growing community. I have time and enthusiasm to serve our region.

Gerald Hope My long experience as chairman with Hospice Marlborough taught me the importance of a strong, collaborative culture. Using my governance and financial skills produced results. Appointed Chairman of DHB Community and Public Health Disability Support Committee that reports on everything outside of hospital care.

Health for our families relies on safe, effective and affordable care when and where we need it. I have the skills to represent you. My experience as a councillor on the Marlborough District Council, my time spent in the community and lobbying with Save Our Services/Hands Off Wairau, mean I know some of the concerns and needs ahead.

Successful health care is about partnerships with national and local government, with those at the coalface who provide vital services, the dedicated staff who deliver day to day care; and investing in prevention, focusing on the young and the elderly – the most vulnerable sections of our community.

Graeme Faulkner I want to complete the Nelson Marlborough health services review using my knowledge and experience of a complex organisation to make sure quality safe services continue to be provided at Wairau Hospital. As a member of key DHB committees I ensured surgical and specialist services were continued at Wairau and we are not disadvantaged by our distance from Nelson.

I began in the health sector with St John, and still have an administrative role with them. For 10 years I managed the Picton Medical Centre. I am currently the Tasman area manager for NZ Red Cross. I also have an interest in emergency management, in Tasman / Nelson / Marlborough. I was a board member for 2007-

2010 and want to increase availability of services for Marlborough. Conflict of Interest: To the best of my knowledge, I have no other conflict of interest with the NMDHB at the date of nomination other than overseeing the delivery of Meals on Wheels for the Tasman area, a contract negotiated by NZ Red Cross national office.

Health issues discussed at candidates meeting By Glenise Dreaver Over twenty people turned up in the Picton School hall on the night of Thursday September 26 to hear seven Marlborough candidates for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB). Sitting board member Gerald Hope began by acknowledging Jean Smart, wife of the late Graham Smart, Wairau Hospital superintendent from

IT'S TIME FOR A M

1950-80. She had this year circulated a Save Our Services petition over concerns about cutbacks to elective surgery at Wairau. Gerald said that the board needed to find ways of doing things better. He described a fundraising venture for an MRI machine for Wairau with which he had been involved. “It was redundant, clapped out, after one year.”

The DHB needed to look after the interests of the whole population, and he said that they had never discussed closing Wairau. He also said decisions to be made by the new board by December would serve the people of Marlborough/ Nelson/ Tasman for the next ten years. “We need to put people on who understand the issues. “ Chair Margaret McHugh raised the

issue of recruiting good staff, and it was explained by several candidates that Wairau’s small size was a real issue. The medical profession was moving away from generalist surgeons and good staff wanted to be part of an expert team working with the technology of their field.

Concert to quake-proof church

Story and photo by Kristy Martin Blenheim’s St Andrew’s Church is renowned for its state-of-the-art acoustics, but the building is in need of earthquake strengthening if it is to continue to host stellar concerts. It is for this reason that a fundraising concert will be held next Sunday, featuring an array of talented musicians playing light classical numbers. St Andrew’s minister Johanna Warren said the church, built in the 1960s, was structurally sound, it was just the adjoining hall which needed work. “The hall needs basic strengthening through its middle - the uprights and the beams, and the gable ends need to be strengthened.” She said she wasn’t aware how much the project would cost. The church was unaffected by the

recent earthquakes, but one end of the hall has been closed off until the strengthening work is conducted. “We are not using the end of the building because of the gables, but we are using the middle part,” Ms Warren said. “We are keen to have the building back in full use.” The fundraising concert will feature internationally trained performers, including soprano Lois Johnston and cellist Lissa Cowie. Euphonium player Nick Smith is on the bill, along with the Marlborough District Brass Ensemble, pianist Marsha Stringer and mezzo soprano Elin Tomos. The event will run from 2pm-4pm on October 13. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for children and are available at the door.

$400k for new theatre Funds are mounting steadily for Blenheim’s new ASB Civic Theatre, with a massive $333,000 donation pledged from the NZ Lottery Grants Board. This follows a $100k grant from three gaming trusts operating in Marlborough. Pub Charity will contribute $75,000, the Bluegrass Trust $25,000 and Air Rescue and Community Services Trust has pledged $5,000. Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley said it was gratifying to see the positive response from funding agencies.

Jobs axed in two Blenheim businesses By Kristy Martin Blenheim building company TH Barnes is shutting down its construction and joinery operations, resulting in 35 job losses. The board of directors announced the move in a statement, which said the decision was the result of the “ongoing and prolonged recession in the economy”. The company will honour its existing contracts before ceasing operations totally within the building industry. It is understood 35 positions will be axed, including construction and joinery workers, administration staff, contractors and three work experience students, who are yet to be told when their employment will end.

TH Barnes as a company will still operate, focusing instead on its property development interests, including the development of existing properties. The joinery factory and machinery will go up for sale. This is another blow for Marlborough workers, still reeling from the news Annies has gone into liquidation, costing 30 employees their jobs. Annie and Graeme Giles said they were forced to put their Grovetown fruit manufacturing company into voluntary receivership last Friday following a labelling error involving four million fruit bars sent to the US. “It is the saddest, saddest thing that has ever happened to Graeme and I,” Ms Giles told the

Sun. “What happened on Friday just broke our hearts to see how much impact it has had on the people here. “It really cuts deep.” Ms Giles said the cost of returning and repackaging an order of such volume was “more than we could sustain”. “We want to stress that this doesn’t affect the sale of any of our bars and had nothing to do with the safety of our product.” The company has been placed in the hands of receivers Price Waterhouse Coopers but will continue to trade. Twenty-three employees have remained on staff.

Kids have bee-utiful time at honey fest By Kristy Martin Families flocked to the inaugural Spring Honey Festival at Hunter’s Wines last Saturday and organisers say the event is likely to become an annual one. Kids in bee costumes went buzzing about while their parents enjoyed wine tastings and delicious honey-themed dishes whipped up by chef Alain Hauswirth.

The event was a collaboration between Hunter’s Wines and The Honey Company, who gave out honey samples and discount vouchers to the guests. Managing director of Hunter’s, Jane Hunter, said it was fortunate the weather held out and that it was a great idea to hold the event on the first day of school holidays. The day included face painting,

games and colouring in for the kids, plus musical entertainment by local singer and pianist Lee Stuart. Pom Pom the clown delighted children with her balloon creations and the SPCA animals were happy to receive cuddles all day. More photos, see Out & About page 14.

Kindy kids adopt lamb By Kristy Martin A lovable lamb named Poppy is helping the children at Mayfield Kindergarten learn about responsible pet ownership. At just a few weeks old, Poppy has become very popular with the kids, who have been raising her for several weeks. Teacher Kathryn Richards said the lamb was on loan from a friend’s farm. “It’s a chance for the children to learn empathy and how to look after an animal,” Kathryn said. “We are also talking about where wool comes from and how it is made. “It’s been a great teaching tool.”

lenheim couple Tracy Taylor and Peter Sutherland had a firm idea of how they wanted their home built, so they were pleased when Peter Ray Homes worked closely with them to deliver what they wanted. “This was the first time Peter and I had built together so we had a big list of ‘must haves’ and wanted to be involved in every stage of the build. “Rowan met with us regularly, sometimes in the evenings and went over everything in detail. He took us through showhomes to see how our ideas would look and when our build started he encouraged us to visit the site.

“When we did the tradesmen would put down their tools to show us around and talk us through everything, so throughout there were no surprises, everything was done to how we wanted it to be,” Tracy said. Rowan told Tracy and Peter the build would take approximately five months, and it did! “Rowan and his team worked day, night and even weekends to have our home built on time. Everyone who was involved was clearly dedicated to their craft,” Peter said. “People ask us what would we change... to which we reply - nothing! “The trust for Rowan and Peter Ray Homes was there from the start and the whole experience was stressfree and fun,” Tracy said.

Crowds flock to new Artisan Market

Story and photo By Kristy Martin Organisers couldn’t be happier with the success of the first Marlborough Artisan Market, with huge crowds turning out to support the new initiative. With more than fifty stallholders selling quality wares, musical entertainment, delicious food and games for the kids, the Saturday market, held in the Wynen Street carpark, is set to be a regular feature for Blenheim. Coordinator Pete Jameson said

he wasn’t surprised by the huge turnout, given the hard work and dedication that went in to organising the market. “It went extremely well and we are very pleased with the response from everyone,” Mr Jameson said. “We got a lot of support from a lot of people including the Marlborough District Council and the Chamber of Commerce, local retailers and individuals who put in hundreds of hours of their time.”

Mr Jameson said the market would be held every Saturday from 9.30am-1.30pm and would continue through summer. “We will try to tie it in with other events happening in the area, but we are not trying to compete with other markets,” he said. The Artisan Market has the capacity for more stallholders as long as the products are Marlborough made, grown or assembled.

Last week for A&P Show entries Story and photo by Celeste Consider yourself crafty, artistic or even talented in the kitchen? The Marlborough A&P Association wants your creations! This year’s Marlborough A&P Show is set for November 8 and 9 and in it there is the Home Industries section where people can showcase their skills in cooking, cheese making, needlework, handcraft, knitting, sewing, photography, olive oil and even craft brewing. There is even a category for free range eggs. Chairperson of the Home Industries committee Katherine Dobby is hoping to attract entries from all ages before they close this Friday. “What is wonderful about Home Industries is that it’s open to amateur entries, so no one needs to feel like they have to be perfect at baking or sewing. “Take me for example, I am a great baker but I can’t make a sponge or scone to save myself. If you can make a great pikelet, or you have some wonderful preserves or even people who are trying cheese making for the first time, enter them and you could win,” Katherine said. There are some entry forms available at the Sun Office or alternatively you can enter and pay online at www.showdayonline.com Alternatively the Association secretary will be at the A&P Showgrounds office today and Friday from 9am - 3pm for any last minute entries.

The service, held at the RSA Lounge in the Clubs of Marlborough on Friday, included an honour roll and wreath laying, followed by a police medal presentation ceremony. Marlborough Area Commander, Inspector Simon Feltham, said the event was about paying respect to the 29 police officers killed in the line of duty and their families, as well as honouring past and present police and returned service men and women. Mayor Alistair Sowman and Squadron Leader Jackie Searle laid wreaths on behalf of the community and the RNZAF.

the y a s s d i K darndest things...

My husband and I took our kids to the park recently and they found a dead bird beside one of the paths. My son (7) asked what happened to it. My husband told him; “It got sick and died and went to heaven.” My daughter (5) screwed her face up and replied; “God must have thrown it back down, it’s all yucky and squashed.” My husband was nearly in tears with laughter. ing r p S Time to Clean

Why it pays to organise your home People experience day to day stress and chaos in their jobs, finances so the last thing they want is to have that flow back into their homes. A home should provided a safe harbour from stress, so if it’s cluttered, unclean, messy or simply disorganised home relaxation can be virtually impossible. With a little work your home can be better organised so when you return from work all you need to do is put your feet up. Clutter stresses you: Just sitting in a cluttered room can create stress. Living in a cluttered home can create constant low-grade stress and subtly but steadily drain your energy. Soothing surroundings are nurturing: Being in a space characterized by order and tranquility can soothe you and help release stress. Coming home to an orderly home can help you feel like you’re entering a sanctuary away from the stresses of the outside.

Mess and clutter will subtly but steadily drain your energy.

Organised homes save time, money and other resources: A messy, disorganized home can cost you more than just your inner peace. If you don’t have a ‘home’ for all of your belongings, you spend more time trying to

put things away when you’re cleaning up, and waste time looking for items when you need them. If you don’t have an organised system for filing your bills and other important papers, you may end up paying things late, which results in fees and additional stress. There are many other ways your mess may be draining your resources that you don’t even realize. A well-ordered home may bring good fortune: Followers of the Chinese discipline Feng Shui believe that a well-ordered home aligns vital energy in your life to bring good fortune in other areas of your life. So, while Spring presents a great excuse to get your home in order, any time is the right time to create an organised, soothing atmosphere to come home to. You can simplify your life and reduce the daily stress you experience by putting in relatively minimal effort. Let your home be your sanctuary!

Combat dust mites with these tips House dust mites are eight-legged creatures that are part of the Arachnid family — relatives of spiders, chiggers and ticks. The mites that commonly cause allergies are of the Pynoglyphoid genera, especially the species Dermatophgoides of pteronyssinus, Dermatophygoides farinae and Blomia tropcaclis. The house dust mite may be an important year-round cause of atopic dermatitis (eczema) and asthma. Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, the house dust mite, can only be seen with a microscope but it is nevertheless a common and significant cause of allergy. It may make the nose run or cause sneezing and wheezing. In some patients it also contributes to exacerbations of atopic dermatitis. The house dust mite is not the main problem in itself. It doesn’t bite or transmit disease. What people become allergic to are the proteins in the mites and their faeces. The dust mite hides in the dust that can be found in even the cleanest bedroom – deep in carpets and curtains and in the seams of mattresses, where even the most house-proud individual can’t find it. It thrives in poorly ventilated and humid homes.

Measures to reduce the numbers of house dust mite. • Use a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter. Vacuum all carpets each week, especially in the bedrooms and under the beds. If you can, choose vinyl flooring rather than carpet as it tends to hoard less dust. Vacuum upholstery and curtains, and don’t forget the mattress and blankets. • Use a damp duster to do the cleaning as it is much better at collecting dust than a dry one. • Wash curtains regularly. There is less dust when curtains are made of

lightweight materials. They also need to be vacuumed often, and wash them regularly too (perhaps six-weekly). • Hang clothes up in wardrobes, and that includes the dressing gowns! Make sure the wardrobe is well ventilated, or consider a chemical moisture remover such as anhydrous calcium chloride flakes. • Dehumidifiers can reduce numbers of house dust mites, as they prefer a moist environment. • Put soft toys in the freezer for a few hours.

Mental Health Awareness Week

7 - 13 October

A challenge is issued “Smile at a stranger”

www.mentalhealth.org.nz

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week (October 7-13) and in the spirit of promoting ‘mental wellbeing’, Supporting Families in Mental Well Being manager Cheryl Thompson (pictured) is issuing a challenge to the community. “I want everyone to smile at a stranger, you might be surprised by the smile you get back!” “Sometimes it’s enough to know that someone cares enough to smile at you, and it makes us feel so good when they return that smile,” she said. This year’s theme “Connect” is encouraging individuals, families, work colleagues, communities and schools to spend some time getting to know one another better as well as reaching out to

people they haven’t seen or heard from for a while. “If you haven’t heard from a friend in

a while, phone or visit them. Invite your neighbour over for a coffee or share produce from the garden with them. “There are even families who have trouble communicating and spend a lot of their time in front of computers, televisions and cellphones. Turn it all off and sit down together and talk, play a game, share a meal these are all important things we should try doing every day,” Cheryl said. To make the ‘Connect’ message more fun SF Marlborough has some speech bubble cards at their Scott Street office and at the Sun Office where people can collect some, write a message on the back and pop it into the letterbox of someone they wish to connect with.

Supporting you and advocating for your rights Meet Paula and Nicola, the team at Marlborough’s Mental Health Consumer Advocacy Service. The Mental Health Consumer Advocacy Service is a free and confidential service that provides support to any person who has, or has had, an experience with mental illness. This includes, but is not limited to, conditions such as bipolar, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, compulsive disorders, self harm, multiple and borderline personality disorders and posttraumatic stress. Paula and Nicola are consumer advocates, on hand to address the needs of anybody coping with mental illness, whatever those needs might be. They can listen to your concerns, provide information about your rights and aid and assist you in conflict resolution. Paula explains that the role of an advocate is to take up the cause for individuals or groups to ensure their rights are respected and their needs addressed. “We can also assist people in clarifying issues, letter writing and identifying and providing information about other local services.” Nicola says the service takes a holistic approach

and can help people access a range of programmes for developing life skills. It also focuses on breaking down the stigma that surrounds mental illness. “We not only provide a voice for people who are having trouble functioning with their condition, but we also assist those who are just living and coping with it day to day.” Paula and Nicola welcome anybody to stop by and have a chat; their door is always open. “We walk with you”, is their motto. The Mental Health Consumer Advocacy Service is located on Level 2 of Aorere House, at 54 Scott Street, Blenheim.

Volleyball finals Marlborough Volleyball’s Club Finals of the Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League were played at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. The teams Magnum, Motley Crew and Desperate Housewives have dominated their respective grades all season with no game losses for Magnum, only two losses for Motley Crew and one loss for Desperate Housewives. Magnum met Woodbourne Lane Street in the President’s grade final, where they won the first set 25-16, and the second 25-20. Woodbourne didn’t give up in the third set and the score board seesawed with outstanding spiking from both Woodbourne’s Joel Wiapo and Magnum’s Nigel Sowman. Then Eli Briasco stepped up to serve and helped Magnum win the set 25-17, taking game in all three sets and also the winners crown.

Pigeon results Last Saturday was the second of three races from Christchurch for the pigeons of the Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club. With the sun shining and the winds being of only a moderate nature from the north-west direction, the race birds covered the 240 km at a fairly good speed and the returning birds were dropping into their lofts one after the other like aerial dive bombers. The winning birds were again recorded in the Spring Creek area with club President Carl Kirkwood taking the honours and his bird covering the distance in 3 hours 37 minutes at a rate of 1117.32 metres per minute, 2nd and 3rd positions went the husband and wife duo of Shirley and Donald Morrison, whose birds had a velocity of 1109.20 and 1107.78 respectfully. Birds from the loft of Joan Webb central Blenheim also put up good performances, with Joan and James’s birds being very close at 1100 mpm and only decimal points separating them at the finish.

End of season for harriers Stuart Curnow is the holder of the Prosser Cup, the last event on the official Marlborough Harriers Club calendar for the 2013 season. The cup is raced on handicap and until this year was contested around the streets of Blenheim before being moved to Hawkesbury Road for safety reasons. The Prosser Cup doubles as the Women’s Road Handicap and Emma Jones claimed this title. Robbie Barnes recorded the fastest actual time for the 8.2 km distance. Carol Ryder won the walking section while Sheila Waters recording the fastest time, followed by Leanne Barnes and Hellen Munro recording a dead heat. Winners in the children’s grades were Angus Kopua, Amber Bendell, Hunter Bendell, Emily Munro, Bailey McKay, Anna Barnes and Hannah Munro.

Children’s prize-giving followed the afternoon racing. Luke Jones received the Vulcan Trophy awarded for the Most Promising Midget (12 and under) Boy. Amber Bendell won the Western Trophy awarded to the Outstanding Midget (12 and under) Girl. Senior prize-giving saw Steve Olsen awarded the President Trophy (Best Club Spirit), David Smit received the Presidents Supporters Cup and Tracey Sims was presented with the John Western Memorial Cup for sportsmanship. Hellen Munro was named Most Improved Walker. The Anita Neal Trophy for Most Improved Runner was awarded to Anna Barnes and Robbie Barnes was named Marlborough Harrier of the Year.
