From loss to love then fine. Dying southerlies.
New puppy gifted after tragic loss Story and photo by Kristy Martin Three weeks ago Adrianna Hamilton was left devastated after watching her beloved puppy get hit and killed by a car. Today that pain is a distant memory because the three-year-old Blenheim girl has a new pet to love, thanks to a kind-hearted stranger. Adrianna’s mum Christie-Lee Hamilton sent a text to the Sun saying she was trying to track down the driver who ran over the family’s Jack Russell Terrier, Mocha. The text prompted a kind-hearted Blenheim woman to give the Hamiltons a new Papillon cross puppy to help ease the pain of their loss. Continued page 2

Real estate agent by day, firefighter by night By Kristy Martin It is like the plot of a superhero movie. A real estate agent who doubles as a volunteer firefighter found himself saving one of his former properties when a fire broke out. A few months ago, First National Real Estate salesman Michael Rea sold a house in Springlands to couple Jamie and Halie East. Last week, Mr Rea was called back to that same property with the Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade when a bathroom heater burst into flames. The heater, located above a bathroom doorway, was operating for about two hours while Jamie and Halie’s three children took turns showering, before it caught fire about 9.30pm last Thursday. Jamie attempted to smother the flames out with a towel while melting plastic from the heater dripped onto his head and bare arms. Halie called the Fire Service and when the crew arrived minutes later, it was Michael who was driving the truck. The firefighters climbed into the roof and used a thermal imaging camera to check the flames had not spread.
First National Real Estate salesperson and volunteer firefighter Michael Rea delivers a Home Safe Kit to Jamie East, whose bathroom heater (pictured) caught fire and melted.
“What a star,” Halie said of Michael and his efforts. The real estate agent-slash-firefighter returned yesterday to present the East family with a Home Safe Kit containing a fire extinguisher, smoke alarm
and fire blanket. “This is a reminder for people about the importance of having working smoke alarms,” Michael said. The East home is fitted with several of the devices, but Halie is determined
to install more. “Have an escape plan and meeting place with your family, and if in doubt about a potential fire call 111,” Michael said.
New puppy gifted after family’s tragic loss Continued from page 1 “Adrianna was really, really upset and I was hysterical,” Christie-Lee said of losing Mocha. “I’d never lost a pet before. “We are just so thankful for someone to have given us a new dog for free after everything that’s happened. “I just can’t believe the generosity of some people.” The Hamiltons only had Mocha for three weeks before she was run down
in a neighbour’s driveway. “She was still small enough to climb under the fence,” Christie-Lee said. “I heard a yelp and I ran outside and she was just lying there. “She had crushed legs and ribs and a crushed skull so she died instantly. “She didn’t suffer, but it was just a shame because Adrianna saw everything, so did the other (neighbourhood) kids.” According to neighbours, the fe-
male driver who hit the dog had tried to leave her details with ChristieLee, but the Blenheim mum was too shocked and distraught. It was only later on, after the dog had been buried, that Christie-Lee realised she wanted to speak with the driver about what had happened. “Losing a pet is a horrible thing, it’s like losing a child. “It must have been awful for her too, so I’d really like to talk to her about it.”
Meanwhile, she wants to say a huge thank you to the woman who gave her daughter the new dog, which had been at a pet shop for the past two weeks but went unsold. A delighted Adrianna has named her new pet ‘Lucy’. “You are a very kind and loving person, we can’t thank you enough,” Christie-Lee said to the woman, who didn’t want any publicity. “I’m just happy that my daughter is happy.”

Marlburians slow to vote
By Kristy Martin Only half of Marlborough’s population are expected to vote in the 2013 Local Body Elections. Voting for the Marlborough District Council and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board closes at noon on Saturday and so far only one third of the population has cast its vote. Offical figures yesterday
showed that 10,916, or 33.27 per cent, of a potential 32,810 votes had been registered. Marlborough electoral officer Dean Heiford said the figures were down on the 2010 numbers but on par with the 2007 Local Body Elections. “In 2007 we had 50.92 per cent of the population vote, so we still might break the 50 per cent mark,” he said.
In 2010, 56.53 per cent of Marlborough’s eligible voting population cast their votes and in 2004 that figure reached 62.43 per cent. Mr Heiford said voting figures were down, on average, across the nation but also said there might have been other contributing factors as to why Marlburians were not enthused to vote. He said there were very few
3
issues raised during the election period that had roused community interest and this may have contributed to the numbers. Meanwhile, residents are being reminded to mail all postal votes before 4pm today. After this, ballot papers must be dropped directly to the Marlborough District Council offices in Blenheim.

Employer crackdown Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse has introduced a new Bill to Parliament that will crack down on employers who exploit migrant workers. Under the Immigration Amendment Bill such employers will face a jail sentence of up to seven years, a fine not exceeding $100,000, or both. Exploitative employers who hold residence visas will also be liable for deportation if the offence was committed within 10 years of gaining residence.

New powers for mayor and deputy Mayors nationwide will gain new powers once elected on Saturday. A mayor will be able to legally appoint their own deputy mayor, appoint all committee chairs and determine the structure of council committees, including which elected councillors are appointed on to those. The legal power to decide their own political teams, structures and processes means that mayors will gain a huge level of political control over councils that they currently do not legally have. Adding to this direct political control, mayors will also legally be personally responsible for driving the setting of council plans and budgets. This, alone, is a huge change from the past. With these changes The Sun asked our Mayoral candidates who would partner(deputy) them should they be elected.
When the Sun asked Alistair Sowman who his preferred deputy would be he told The Sun “It was too premature to discuss a deputy. We first need to get elected.” Mayor hopeful Jamie Arbuckle says if he is elected he will work with Jessica Bagge as his deputy. It is important to let the public know he says. The Sun asked Jessica why should Jamie Arbuckle be mayor. Bagge says the mayoral role is about being Chairman of the Board, a Team Leader - Jamie Arbuckle is definitely capable of delivering this. We want to break the cycle of tired old entrenched attitudes and I’m happy to work anywhere in that structure. We’re about transparency, consultation and involvement. That will apply to how we organise ourselves as well.

Jamie put a line in the sand at the start about how he felt around transparent Council processes, he’s a good listener and worked hard to understand and come to grips with the Council Regulatory environment – he’s built constructive relationships with Council Officers and knows the Policies and Plans she says. Brian Dawson says “voters need to decide who they want on council before I can determine who will be my deputy. “Ideally someone who could be a future mayor.” Richard Feather said that he would choose either Jamie Arbuckle or Brian Dawson as his deputy mayor. Both have very good ideas and I have had the chance to listen to them and speak with them both during this election campaign he says.

$840k for new theatre
Health board delivers savings Nelson Marlborough is among the district health boards from across New Zealand saving millions of dollars by working together to reduce back office costs, says Health Minister Tony Ryall. During a visit to the Golden Bay Integrated Family Health Centre, Mr Ryall said the Nelson Marlborough DHB had saved nearly $2 million in back office costs through regional procurement in the last financial year. These savings were reinvested back into frontline health services for the community. “By purchasing goods and services together, from medical gases to postagepaid envelopes, DHBs are able to harness the power of bulk purchasing and get the most out of every health dollar,” Mr Ryall said. “Last financial year, the five South Island DHBs made combined savings of nearly $15 million through the South Island Alliance regional procurement programme. “The Alliance has also introduced a South Island wide programme for young people with eating disorders. “Doctors in Nelson, Blenheim, Greymouth, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and Invercargill are now able to provide effective therapy for young people and their families closer to home. “Along with Health Benefits Limited, the South Island Alliance is another good example of how patient care can be improved when DHBs work together,” said Mr Ryall.
The project to build a new $17.5 million theatre in Marlborough received a huge boost yesterday with a grant of $840,000 from The Canterbury Community Trust (TCCT). Community Trust Chair Tracey Chambers, who is touring the Marlborough region, said the new theatre was an important facility for the local community and the Trust was delighted to assist with the fundraising project. “Partnering with groups in the community and being a catalyst for initiatives at the grassroots level are key priorities for TCCT, and the new theatre is an example of how we can work with local groups for the benefit of their community,” Ms Chambers said. “The Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust (MCTT) has a strong history of working with the community to fund and manage theatre and the arts in the region. “The new theatre will provide tremendous facilities for future Marlborough generations.” Ms Chambers described the new theatre as a “hub” for the community. “It is more than just a building, it’s going to be the heart and soul of this community,” she said. Brian Moore, a trustee for the Marlborough Region on TCCT, says the new theatre will provide a state-of-the-art facility for the performing arts in Marlborough. “The theatre, with its large auditorium also complements the
Canterbury Community Trust chair Tracey Chambers and Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust vice chair Peter Mark at the old theatre.
adjoining Marlborough Convention Centre, providing flexibility and additional facilities to attract conferences and events to the region.” MCTT vice chair Peter Mark said The Canterbury Community Trust played a key role in helping get the theatre project off the ground, as well as providing ongoing support. He said they were helping to
build the community, not just bricks and mortar. “The Trust was one of our early supporters, which helped give the new theatre plans credibility in the community. “This contribution comes on top funding to help with additional earthquake strengthening and will add momentum to the drive to complete what will be a new civic centre for Marlborough.”
The Canterbury Community Trust distributes funds for charitable, cultural, economic development, philanthropic and recreational benefits in four regions – Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough/Kaikoura and the Chatham Islands. It has provided a total of $1.24 million toward the new Marlborough theatre.

Owned a nd operated by Blenheim woman and chef Jacqueline Lammas (pictured), the food caravan will be hosting a series of lunches throughout the summer months at Forrest Wines. This has been a combined initiative between Jacqueline, John and Brigid Forrest. $2.5m for new guardrails The NZ Transport Agency is investing $2.5 million to install guardrails between Blenheim and Picton following 17 serious accidents in the past five years. Work has begun on the 18.5km of guardrails on the stretch of State Highway 1 (SH1), and Marlborough Roads Highway Manager Frank Porter says that this project will benefit everyone who drives here. “With up to 9000 vehicles making the trip between Blenheim and Picton every day, it’s important that we make this road as safe as it can be,” Mr Porter said. “Over the past five years, we’ve seen 17 serious or fatal accidents here, and we want to bring that number down. “Guardrails are an affordable, relatively straightforward way to reduce the severity of crashes along this stretch of SH1.
Work is being conducted on a stretch of guardrails between Blenheim and Picton. Story and photo supplied.

Mr Porter says that in the safe systems approach, everyone has a part to play in bringing down the road toll. “We all make mistakes sometimes, but mistakes on the road can have serious or even deadly consequences. “Marlborough Roads recognise that along with safer roads and roadsides, safer speeds, safer vehicles, and safer use of the transport network make a real difference to preventing fatal and serious accidents on our roads.” The contract for this work has been awarded to Higgins Contractors Limited. Work began on 16th September 2013 and should be completed by April 2014. Mr Porter thanked drivers for their patience and asked that they drive to the conditions and take care throughout the project.

The national event is a major fundraiser for Cure Kids and requires teams to fundraise $7000 for children’s health research before being eligible to take part. Friday’s event included mussels provided by Kono Seafood and was judged by Phil Kilgour, Kono’s general manager, and Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman.

Dr Keith Davidson (pictured), who was born in Bristol, England, trained and worked at St Mary’s Hospital in London before he immigrated to New Zealand in 1966, and met his wife Liz at Wellington Hospital. Dr Davidson moved with his family to Blenheim in 1975. He set up his practice in one end of his family home on Scott Street. Many of his patients enjoyed Dr Davidson’s old school style of practice and long running associations with their families.
He has been family doctor to some families over several generations and twice had five generations of one family on his books.
Dr Davidson adopted technologies, such as his iPhone, in his personal life, but preferred to stay with handwritten notes in his practice. He said he has enjoyed the continuous learning that takes place through the life of a working doctor. Thief makes away with donation box Story by Celeste Lodewyk A thief has been caught on video surveillance stealing a donation box from the counter at Blenheim’s United Video store. The donation box was part of the fundraiser ‘Fund For a Friend’, organised by Blenheim man Gary Newell who is raising money for his friend who has terminal brain cancer, so he can have a holiday in New Zealand before he becomes too ill. It is estimated to have had around $250 of donations in it. Gary said the theft occured on September 9 at 5:37pm but he was unaware of it until recently when he visited the store to collect the donation box. “I went to collect the box and it wasn’t there, the staff thought it had already been collected. When we looked back over United Video’s video surveillance we could see the guy hanging around before walking up to the counter and taking the box,” he said. Gary has filed a report with the Police but he also wants to publically “shame” the thief. “It’s a pretty low thing what he has done. This money was donations from the community and it’s shocking to know there are low-lives who would do this,” he said. Gary has since finished fundraising but wants to see the thief brought to justice. If anyone has information on

I prefer to text, phone or talk to people in person. I don’t write letters anymore but I will use email, especially with friends and family in Australia.
I spend about an hour a day online keeping in touch with friends and family and I would prefer to text someone rather than write a letter.
I probably spend about half an hour a day on Facebook. I find it is becoming a great place for people to send invitations and such.
I have the Facebook app on my phone so I check it a couple of times a day, my husband works overseas so it’s a great way for him to see photos of the kids.
Social media is the only way I keep in contact with people. I like laughing at people’s dramas on Facebook.

Smart & Connected? Dear Ed, I have my doubts. Council has supported the great new Artisan Market by providing free space at the Wynen Street car park. This is a commendable and generous deed. There, however it stops rather rudely too I might add as the $40.00 parking ticket I received along with many others for parking for 12 minutes attests to!!! Just what are Council up to penalising market attendees (and in my case making deliveries to a stall holder?) I thought the market was an initiative to bring people into town to add much needed vibrancy to an otherwise dead Main street. Seems I may be mistaken. We can spend $130,000 erecting directional signs made in Nelson to point people around the place but while they seek to shop and enjoy a Saturday morning Council engage the Parking Police to put the dampeners on things. How about Council move “free Thursdays” to “free Saturdays” and publish a notice in this paper that all and any parking tickets issued on Saturday 5th October will be waived as an apology for getting it so very, very wrong. Roguery Dear Ed, Regarding asset sales, namely Power Stations. Government officials did not personally pay for these assets but the citizens of New Zeland did so, by way of Inland Revenue taxes, GST and on their power bills. The Government have confiscated our assets, and selling them back to the citizens who have money! This has to be the height of roguery and discrimination! K O Lawrence

Dear Ed, What another flip flop John Key has done on the America’s Cup. From being opposed to government contributing now he wants to give $36 million. All to woo popularity and voters. They say Winston Peters is a populist. John Key has Winston beaten hands down on that score. He should be nicknamed "Jandal", the biggest flip-flop of all! But why give any money? The America’s Cup is a billionaire's yacht race. Listening to the Arthritis Foundation talking of the need to raise $5 million, I wondered where is John Key and government's priorities? We have public collection for arthritis and other foundations, we have hospices, yet government cannot fund it. How about that $36 million going to health needs like cancer? Don Coyote

Team NZ experience brought to local yachting Scott Fyfe, coach of the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, talks to Glenise Dreaver about his first-hand experience supporting Emirates Team New Zealand in San Francisco The new coach of QCYC, Scott Fyfe of Blenheim, has brought back some lessons from first-hand experience of the Emirates Team New Zealand America’s Cup challenge. He’s sure they will help in his new job. Working in such a big team meant you had to get along with many different personalities, he said. “And I was at the bottom of the team and just had to take instruction. Now I’ll be on the other side.” The keen yachtsman hadn’t intended to be part of the team when he left his job as a painter in Blenheim earlier this year, though he certainly planned to be there watching. After doing a Nelson course on crewing a superyacht last year, he sent his CV to a friend in the crew of “Imagine”, a NZ-built 145-foot-long superyacht often berthed in Auckland. It’s Italian owner, one of the Team NZ sponsors, wanted the yacht taken to San Francisco where he planned to join it. Scott got the call to sail to Tahiti in two weeks. From there, they went to Hawaii, then San Francisco. He and other crew then spent a fortnight changing the boat from sailing mode to its role as a luxury mansion on the water. They were one of three superyachts owned by Team NZ sponsors all anchored in the team’s compound. “And Team NZ needed someone to clean their boats. “ He became one of the team, eating and socialising with the rest of the crew and after a fortnight, he was asked to drive a chaser boat. His was one of the two which took VIPs, sponsors or media out on the water to watch the racing and take photographs. On the day things went wrong with a rushed tack, and the Team NZ Boat
tipped sideways, Scott said his heart dropped. “And the boat went totally silent. Everyone just watched.” The yacht was saved said Scott, because of the hard work of the grinders. “They just kept hanging on and they stopped it. In the nick of time.” Fortunately, the grinder’ stations are sited sideways, so they were able to hold on during the manoeuvre. The modifications to the Oracle boat, which altered the way they foiled, were what made the difference to the final result he said. “They made the system they had work. Ours was maxed out.” As well as having qualified as a coach, Scott, who has always sailed out of the Queen Charlotte Club, is well known as a top sailor in Splash class. He has had a first and a third place in the nationals and internationally recorded a fifth and two fourths. Now, with the purchase of a keeler just before he left for overseas, Scott’s moving up to a different level of sailing. The 7.7m Honkin’ Jack takes five crew and on its first race this season, it dead heated across the line in first place, though handicapping will probably make that a different matter. While he says he is keeping his options open, there’s no hiding the fact that his eye is on selection for the next Team NZ America’s Cup challenge. “We’ll have to see. It’s about who you know as well as your experience.”

Wig stands crafted for cancer patients By Kristy Martin Nineteen wig stands crafted by the Marlborough Guild of Woodworkers have been presented to the Cancer Society for patients receiving chemotherapy. “The woodworkers’ guild has been doing this for us for several years and it means we can give them to anybody who needs a wig due to their treatment, predominantly chemotherapy,” said Margot Wilson,

Patients used the stands to store their wigs when they weren’t wearing them and also as a place to dry them after being washed. “It’s a really nice way to support the Cancer Society and we are very grateful,” Ms Wilson said. “Just the fact that somebody makes it for them makes the patients feel cared for. “They really appreciate it.”

MAKING WAVES The only good life jacket is the one that is worn Katie McNabb, director and tutor for Coastguard Boating Education, and Maritime New Zealand Safe Boating advisor talks to the Sun about boating safety and the importance of wearing a life jacket. While we have had a great improvement in the carriage of life jackets and in wearing of the last few years, like seat belts, life jackets are only going to save your life if you have them on. With the arrival of the light weight inflatable jackets, the wearability is no longer an issue nor fitting for different sizes and shapes. Children’s padded life jackets can be bought for as little as $30 which makes them very affordable. Stud-
Katie McNabb. ies in the U.S., U.K. and Australia show that the primary decision that
saves lives on water is putting on a jacket. The same goes here for us. Our waters and opportunities to boat recreationally are second to none, so in order to get the best from your boating, education in on and around the water is the way to go. Learning about the weather and making good decisions about when and where to go boating is the starting point. Good preparation makes for a relaxing and enjoyable
day for all the family. The Marlborough Sounds, in common with all of New Zealand, are subject to strong winds and changeable conditions. Doing a boating course such as the Coastguard Boating Education Day Skipper course gives the knowledge and confidence required. If you are unable to attend class there are home study options available. www.boatingeducation.org.nz/ courses/dayskipper for details
Basic equipment such as a handheld radio to tell someone where you are. There are a significant number of rescues performed each year which are needed as a result of running out of fuel. This situation has the potential of escalating in to something more serious if the weather is changing or it is getting dark. So put on your life jacket, prepare well and have a marvelous summer.

MAKING WAVES
Greg Surgenor of Rimu Engineering
Boats uniquely designed and built Growing up in a boating family has led to a career for boat builder and engineer Greg Surgenor. Rimu Engineering first began with the manufacturing of portable saw mills which were sold on the local and export markets. In recent years Greg’s focus has shifted more towards his Sea Surge Marine Boats which he custom designs and manufactures from his Riverlands Estate workshop. Having been a boat builder
for 25 years, Greg’s expertise include not only the design manufacture of boats, but also in refitting, alterations and even diesel engine work. What makes Sea Surge Marine boats unique is that they are designed to withstand the constant wave pounding experienced by commercial users. The Sea Surge’s D-shaped aluminium pontoon boats taper towards the front to cut smoothly through big waves and choppy water. These are ideal for paua di-
vers and fishermen, with each custom-built boat having a deep 20-degree V with chines to deflect water, making it very dry riding. Each boat is designed to the customer’s requirements, welded to certification and test driven. Ranging in size from 2.4 to 8 metres, Sea Surge aluminium boats can feature a sports or hard top canopy, sports cab or cabin. Greg can also re-fit and install new hard tops on boats. Greg has spec boats already
built for viewing and for sale so to find out more about Sea Surge Marine boats and what Greg can design for you, call into the Rimu Engineering workshop at 25 Bristol Street in Riverlands Industrial Estate. “People can come to me with an idea of what they want and I can custom design a boat for them. Also because the boats are factory direct there is no middle man, making Sea Surge Marine boats extremely affordable.”

Push for compulsory wear of lifejackets Ma r itime New Z ea la nd (MNZ) supports a move to make the wearing of lifejackets compulsory for people under 15, and continues to encourage everyone on the water to wear lifejackets at all times. The move to make lifejackets compulsory for young people is the subject of a private member’s bill from National MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga. Current MNZ-commissioned Research New Zealand data on boating activity in New Zealand indicates a high rate of carriage of lifejackets (between 88–95
percent, depending on boat type) but lower rates of lifejacket wearing. The wearing rate over all vessel types is 80 percent, but this drops to 56–58 percent for power boats and sail boats. MNZ Director Keith Manch said while current New Zealand legislation required sufficient lifejackets to be carried for all people on board vessels, making wearing of lifejackets compulsory for young people would change boating behaviour. “We believe everyone going out on the water should wear lifejackets. While this is par-

ticularly important at times of heightened risk, such as when crossing a bar, in rough weather, or for non-swimmers, accidents can happen at any time,” he said. “Making lifejacket wearing compulsory for those under 15 would not only send a strong message to anyone responsible for the safety of young people on the water, but should instil in young people the need to be safe on the water. That is a message we hope they will hold on to as adults. “The simple message is: lifejackets save lives.”

Eye health is the key message this year World Sight Day (October 10, 2013) is a global initiative of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) with the aim to raise global attention to the current reality of 300 million people living with blindness and vision impairments worldwide.
Macular Degeneration (MD) is a chronic eye disease that affects the central vision and one in seven New Zealanders over the age of 50 will get it. The incidence of MD in New Zealand is increasing and by 2030, incidence levels are expected to increase by 70 per cent.
Supporting World Sight Day • Comprehensive eye examinations • Glaucoma screening • Fashion frames • Industrial safety spectacles • On site workshop • Free car parking
To make people aware of the importance of early detection, Macular Degeneration New Zealand (MDNZ) is encouraging Kiwis across the country, who are aged over 50, to have their macula checked. According to Dr Dianne Sharp, Ophthalmologist and Chairperson of MDNZ, Macular Degeneration affects so many people in New Zealand. “We’ve made it our mission to raise awareness of the disease. We support the awareness raising
initiative of World Sight Day and encourage all New Zealanders to have their eye health checked.” “Those at high risk of developing Macular Degeneration include people over the age of 50, smokers and people with a family history of Macular Degeneration. Early detection and a healthy diet and lifestyle can slow down the disease’s progression, massively.” On 10 October Optometrists around New Zealand, including Noel Templeton on High Street in Blenheim, will be raising

Now I’m going to be a big softy when I grow up.” Unfair Dad Send in your child's funny comments to our weekly "Kids say the darndest things" column to celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz

& Outdoor Living SPRUCE UP FOR SPRING 2013
Burnlea Gardens is now open to the public and for wedding bookings.
Garden a “hidden treasure” Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Follow your feet through the many secret pathways past a babbling brook, through a blaze of colour and beautiful scents and allow yourself to be entertained by the chattering Tui birds high above in the trees. Where can you find this hidden treasure? At Burnlea Gardens on O’Dwyers Road, Blenheim. This beautiful two acre garden which is on the verge of bursting into summer bloom quite literally takes ones breath away. Weaving in amongst the 100 year old trees, carefully plotted plants and shrubs, are a number of secret pathways which take visitors on a scented journey throughout
the garden. Burnlea Gardens is part of a larger seven acre property owned by Viv and Mike Beavon and has recently opened to the public for tours and weddings. Rich in history and boasting of endless opportunities the gardens have been carefully preened ahead of the up and coming wedding season. Viv and Mike have created a dedicated wedding area with a purpose built pergola which can be dressed with beautiful white netting and ribbon. Couples can then add their own colours and decorations to the decor. To the right of the ceremony area is a large, beautiful Ginkgo tree which Viv will
hang lanterns from, and beneath it is a table for signing the wedding register. All seating is provided and up to 100 guests can be catered for. Opportunities for wedding photos are endless with plenty of speciality feature areas scattered throughout the garden, including a little wooden boat resting on the bank beside a Weeping Willow tree. With a mix of colour, natural foliage and a touch of rustic and modern, Burnlea is the perfect location for wedding ceremonies and photographs. Already Viv has taken bookings for wedding ceremonies to be held and she welcomes anyone to make contact.
Garden open Thur / Sun 12 noon - 4pm Burnlea Gardens truly is an amazing, beautiful and peaceful garden. The wedding area is set in front of a garden that has lovely white roses, stunning camellias both white and pale pink, plus many white and pink Helleborus. We also stock garden supplies including pots, statues, potted baskets, pea straw and much more. We also sell spray free fruit and nuts grown on the property.

Explore stunning country gardens A dozen gorgeous country gardens will be on show to the public next weekend, October 19 and 20. The 22nd annual Wairau Valley Anglican Parish Tour of Country Gardens is a flexible, self-drive tour featuring stunning gardens from across the region. For $20 you can grab a programme which includes a map of all the open properties. Donna Anderson’s lovely Brancott Valley property is one of the selected gardens on display, which include a range of flower gardens, large park-like properties and native plant gardens. “It gets people out and about and gives them a chance to share the beauty of God’s creation,” said Nicky Stace, event coordinator. The gardens will be open from 9am-5pm on the Saturday and 11am-5pm on the Sunday and can be visited more than once. Programmes are on sale at Springlands Garden Centre and Café, Selmes Garden Trust Nursery, Devon Nursery, Islington Gardens and Renwick Dairy.

Local rider takes second place Blenheim’s Emma Pilcher took out second place in the Young Rider category at the Marlborough Area One Star Jumping and Show Hunter competition on the weekend. Pilcher was one of several Marlborough riders competing for titles at the two-day event at Waterlea Racecourse in Blenheim. For the 18-year-old college student, the event marked the start of an exciting season with her palomino gelding Snazzy As. Coming off the back of three days of intensive training with Irish international showjumper Sean Cubitt, Pilcher lined up in the Big Bale Contractors Telford Young Rider Series class, which was the highlight of Saturday’s competition. She faced tough competition against seasoned campaigners Charlotte Bellew (Christchurch) and Rose Alfeld (Weedons) who won the title. While local riders failed to nab any of the series classes, organisers felt they would be better for the experience with the season only Blenheim's Emma Pilcher riding Snazzy As. starting to wind up. After several postponements because of weather, the catch, capture and transfer of the möhua to Blumine Island took place over the weekend. Eighteen mohua were caught and transferred and another 13 made their way to the Sounds by small plane. South Island company Blacks Fasteners is working with the Department of Conservation by supporting the relocation (by small plane) of the endangered New Zealand bird onto the unique predator-free sanctuary of Blumine Island. Raffle for national tournament Young Hadley Boyce (pictured left) was the lucky winner of the Boomtown Brawlettes Roller Derby league’s latest fundraising endeavour. Money raised is going towards sending Blenheim skaters to the “Derby Royale”, the national roller derby tournament in Palmerston North, where they will be playing alongside the “Bay City Rollers”, a Hawkes Bay team. The MGP Pro scooter, donated by BikeFit Blenheim, is “awesome” said Hadley. Boomtown Brawlettes skater and chairperson, Jenner Halcrow is both excited and nervous about the upcoming nation-wide tournament which will see Blenheim skaters up against derby heavy weights, Wellington’s “Richter City” and Auckland’s league, “ARDL”. The tournament is on Labour Weekend, the 28th of October.

Pigeon racing results After a foggy start from Christchurch on Saturday (5th), the pigeons from the Blenheim racing pigeon club and birds from several lower North Island clubs competing in the Central Combine, made fairly good speed considering that there was no wind assistance over the 240 km course. A flying time of 3 hours 54 minutes, two birds arrived together at the lofts of Donald and Shirley Morrison of Spring Creek and it was only an extra

circle before landing on the loft that decided the winner. The electronic timing system revealed that Donald’s bird entered it’s loft just 17 seconds before Shirley’s bird arrived at her loft. Great competition to say the least and the pigeons achieved velocities of 1040.51 and 1039.24 meters per minute respectfully. A very good 3rd position with a velocity of 1025.24 went to another Spring Creek loft of club President, Carl Kirkwood who
continues with good form in his racing team. Individual pigeons had to be nominated in this race which is the first leg of our Triple Crown, an event where the nominated birds for each member must also complete races from Oamaru and Invercargill in which the best average velocity over the three races decides the winner whom receives the much sort after trophy and a certain amount of “ mana “ for a job well done.
