Masters of rowing
Multiple medal winners Jim Anderson from the Picton Rowing Club and Brian and Ross Hutchison from the Blenheim Rowing Club.
Story and photo by Kristy Martin Three Marlborough rowers have brought home a huge medal haul from the South Island Masters Games in Nelson last weekend. Jim Anderson, 57, of the Picton Rowing Club won all four of his indoor rowing events, taking gold in the 2000m, the 1000m, the 500m and 100m sprint. Ross Hutchison, 53, won three silvers and a bronze in the same event categories. His father Brian Hutchison won gold and silver in the 100m and 500m and broke New Zealand records in both. This is no mean feat given Mr Hutchison’s age of 81. Continued page 2

A fleet of yachts will deliver the new 2013 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to Wellington as part of the Wineworks Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Yacht Race. Photo supplied.
New vintage sets sail
Marlborough residents will be able to watch and wave goodbye as a fleet of yachts, each carrying a bottle of newly-released Marlborough 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, heads off across the Cook Strait to Wellington next month. The new vintage wine and more than a hundred hardy sailors will cross the straits - one of the toughest stretches of water in the world - as part of the Wineworks Marlborough Sauvignon
Blanc Yacht Race, organised by the Waikawa Boating Club. It is the 11th year the new vintage Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs have taken to the high seas, but this year there is more planned than just a race. The event will start at the entrance to Tory Channel and finish within Wellington’s harbour. Once all the boats have crossed the line, they will complete a full fleet sail down into the harbour,
providing a spectacle seldom seen in the capital. Each boat will carry a bottle of 2013 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which will then be available for the public to taste at a unique event hosted by Wine Marlborough following the race. People are invited to ‘Indulge in a Taste of Marlborough in the Heart of Wellington’ at the renowned Martin Bosley’s restaurant overlooking the stun-

ning Wellington Harbour, where the wine will be matched with gourmet canapés. The Wineworks Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Yacht Race will take place on Thursday November 14 and is the only wine release of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It is loosely based on the traditional Beaujolais Nouveau, where the first wines make their way from France to the UK.

Continued from page 1 In the 100m sprit his time was 19.9 seconds, smashing the previous national record by 2.1 seconds. The three men describe indoor rowing as being much more difficult than outdoor rowing. “The techniques are the same but it’s a bit harder,” Mr Hutchison senior said. “When you’re in the water you’re pushing against something which is good, but with these machines it’s just deadweight.” Mr Hutchison first started rowing in the 1950s but had to give it up due to work commitments. He took up the sport again in 2003 and says he’s loved it ever since.

Collar injury serves as reminder Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk He’s tough as bricks, which is why this three-year-old ginger cat as been named ‘Bricks’ by Marlborough SPCA staff. Bricks was found by SPCA volunteer Levi England a week ago hiding under a house, emaciated and severly injured from a collar which was too small. The skin around Bricks neck had grown over the collar which had to be removed and the wound treated by Springlands Veterinary Centre. Marlborough SPCA animal care manager Jess Monk who is now caring for Bricks said his wound was shocking and the collar would have

been on him for a long time. “The fact that Bricks was collared and neutered tells us he was a loved pet, but for what ever reason he has become a stray and outgrown the collar. “We would love to reunite him with his owners, but if he isn’t he is a great candidate for adoption as he is such a gentle, affectionate cat,” she said. Jess said Bricks’ injury served as a reminder to cat owners to make sure they use correctly fitting collars. “Cat collars are great for identification but it must have a safety clip or elastic band on it for safe release if it gets caught. Any veterinarian can give advice on cat collars so don’t hesitate to contact them,” Jess said.
Because voting papers in the council elections must be received at the MDC offices in Seymour Street by noon tomorrow, you have until 4pm today and until noon tomorrow to bring your voting paper to the offices. This is because votes posted but not received by noon tomorrow will not be valid. Please note that anyone who did not receive a voting paper can cast a special vote, but is also legally required to complete a statutory declaration at the same time, to ensure that each person has cast their votes only once.

Film screening promotes fitness By Kristy Martin Two keen Blenheim athletes are encouraging people to get active, while also raising money for a good cause. Annabelle Latz and Bridget Evans will hold a premiere movie screening of ‘Beyond the Edge’ at Top Town Cinemas in Blenheim next Thursday to raise money for the CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust. The highly-anticipated film details Sir Edmund Hillary’s 1953 ascent of Mt Everest and will not be released in cinemas until the following week. Annabelle said the On Your Feet movie night also includes an auction. Bridget and Annabelle thought Beyond the Edge a fitting movie because the woman who started CatWalk, Catriona
Williams, a leading NZ equestrian rider who became tetraplegic after a fall, recently hand-cycled to 5200 metres in the Himalayas. “If she can get out and do something as remarkable as that, then anybody can get out and be active,” Annabelle said. She and Bridget are also competing in the Jules Taylor Marlborough Women’s Triathlon in December and the Picton Half Iron Man in February. They will also use these platforms to generate awareness of CatWalk, which raises money to help find a cure for spinal cord injuries. Tickets for the film night cost $20 and are available at Top Town Cinemas and Bayleys Real Estate.

At noon yesterday, the MDC website recorded a total of 40.31 per cent of votes cast, as opposed to 46 per cent at the end of the day in 2010 and 39 per cent in 2007. The Marlborough Ward recorded the lowest percentage of votes case, 37.09, while Wairau Awatere recorded 41.45 per cent and Blenheim 40.91 per cent

The High Court has found against the decision of the Marlborough District Council to shift 58 Karaka Point residents from one rating zone to another. The case was brought by the Karaka Point Environs Residents Incorporated. Judge Simon France, in his ruling, said that the ratepayers were not given an adequate opportunity to present a contrary viewpoint. Council CEO Andrew Besley said council would review its processes when changes to rating boundaries were proposed in the wake of the judge’s decision. The matter would also be referred to the new council, he said.

By Kristy Martin The former Chequers cafe in Blenheim has been cleared out and will soon be the location for three separate businesses. Chequers, on Scott Street, closed a few weeks ago and an auction was held last Saturday morning to sell off the restaurant’s furniture, bar, chiller room and cutlery. Owner Robin Sutherland said the large space will be divided into three premises that will include 2 Style Hair Design, which is moving from its current location
on Arthur Street. The second business will be a roast meal takeaway shop, whose Christchurch-based owners will use the kitchen space from the restaurant. Mr Sutherland said he had an interested party for the third business, but it was yet to be confirmed. He said there was some minor building work and cleaning to be done but was hoping the new businesses would be able to move in by early next month.
Chequers has closed and will be turned into three separate businesses.
Holiday help for Tango’s Shoes By Kristy Martin Tango’s Shoes will be found at a new location, on the corner of Queen and Charles streets, from next week. Owners Melanie and Gary Dowling are utilising the extra hands available during the school holidays by getting their children and friends to pitch in and help with the relocation. Yesterday, the current
store, on Arthur Street, was in chaos as young people and adults ran around packing up shoes and stacking boxes to be moved into the new shop. One helper, Mariah Wilson, 15, said the process had been going on all week. Tango’s has had to shift because the quake-prone building on Arthur Street is set to be demolished.
From back: Nairn Wilson, 13, Rhiannon Dowling, 14, Francesca Dowling, 12, and Vincent Dowling, 11, pack up boxes of shoes at Tango's Shoes.

By Celeste Lodewyk New Zealand insurance companies are asking for homes to be insured up to a specified amount, set by the home owner, called the "sum insured". This is because insurance companies now need to know the maximum cost involved in rebuilding homes, in the event of a total loss or disaster. Previously total replacement cover was provided and the insurance company took on the risk according to the size of the house. By having the homeowner provide an estimate of what the rebuild costs would be, insurance companies can provide more accurate cover. This is important because if your home is destroyed, the insurance company will only pay up to the amount it is insured for. This can be a problem for homeowners if they have set their 'Sum Insured' figure too low. So as a homeowner it is important that you understand these changes, how they will affect your insurance and how you can go about gaining an accurate Sum Insured value for your home. ANZ Bank will be providing two free 'Sum Insured Seminars' next Thursday at the Marlborough Club at 12pm - 1pm, or 5:30pm - 6:30pm. Please RSVP by October 14 to Jo-Anne Swete at jo-anne.swete@anz.com or 0272813749.

Menopause and hair loss Menopause can be a daunting time for some women with a series of physical and hormonal changes taking place. Although not as well-known as other symptoms, hair loss during menopause can affect up to 50% of women. Clive Hair Clinics has noted a dramatic increase in the number of females with concerning levels of hair loss. “Nearly 50% of our clients are female now, compared with about 20% around 20 years ago and many of these clients are also experiencing menopause,” trichologist Dorothy Bent said. Hair loss can be caused by hormone imbalance. During childbearing years, higher levels of the female hormone oestro-
gen are produced. They bind the male hormone, androgen, to prevent their entry into hair follicle and root cells. When women reach menopause, production of oestrogen slows, sometimes leading to an imbalance with the excess of male hormone resulting in hair loss. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is often prescribed to lessen the effects of menopause and raising oestrogen levels can help reduce or prevent hair loss. However, HRT is not suitable for all women and some prefer not to use this treatment. Over the 50 years they have been operating in New Zealand, Clive Hair Clinics’ hair loss treatments have been shown to
successfully reduce hair loss during menopause and encourage re-growth. “Whatever the causes of hair loss, it is clear that the earlier that treatment is started, the better the results, “says Dorothy. For more than 30 years, Clive Clinics has been helping clients from the Marlborough region and visit every four months to see their clients. If you are worried about hair loss and would like to discuss your treatment options, Clive Hair Clinic’s are offering consultations next week in Blenheim for $35 (redeemable on treatment programmes). Appointments can booked online at www.cliveclinics.co.nz or phone 0800 40 42 47. Published by arrangement.

Model Expo a huge hit Story by Celeste Lodewyk Children and their parents stood in awe of the hundreds of models displayed at last weekend’s Model Expo held by the Marlborough Branch NZ Model Vehicle Club Inc. Anyone wanting to know more about the club can contact Warren on 578 3683 during the evening.

Local writer Toni Gillan is to edit and publish a new literary journal here, with support from guest editors and, she says, “like-minded creative Marlburians”. They invite original submissions of creative writing, of up to 1000 words, from anyone over the age of 13. The Marlborough Reader is planned twice yearly. It will have front and back covers featuring
local artwork and/or photography and at least 24 content pages. Distribution will be via schools, libraries, training institutions, iwi organisations, churches, offices, hotels, wineries, coffee shops and tourism outlets says Toni. Submissions close on November 15, with Issue 1 in the first week of December or sooner. Toni can be contacted at themarlboroughreader@xtra.co.nz

Bird nests create rural havoc A cautionary tale. Watch for those nests! Photo provided.
For all Vineyard Contracting
Federated Farmers is reminding farmers to check their tractors for starling nests to avoid tractor fires this summer. “Starlings like to build their nests in dry areas and their favourite spot is in tractor engines, says Anders Crofoot, Federated Farmers Rural Fire Spokesperson. He said as it was the nesting season, now was a good time to be vigilant with preventative measures. “This is a safety issue as well as costly to farmers and it can be avoided by simply popping your hood to check for nests

before starting the engine, and keeping a fire extinguisher on board. “FMG have been running their ‘Stop and Pop’ campaign which, over the last three years, has helped reduce their tractor fire claims by 40 per cent, saving farmers time and money. “Farm owners also need to make sure their staff are aware of the risks and preventative methods. ‘‘It only takes a starling 18 minutes to build a nest, so it pays to check each time you use the vehicle,” Mr Crofoot said.
Rural depression

The Nelson and Marlborough Public Health Service, in association with Federated Farmers, Like Minds and Rural Support Trust will be hosting a seminar to help participants recognise the signs of depression. “We are targeting rural professionals that work with farmers, so they are able to identify if a farmer is stressed, anxious, angry or sad, which are all sign signs of depression. This way they will be better placed to know how to help the farmer in question,” Gavin O’Donnell,
Federated Farmers Nelson provincial president said. “Rural professionals such as rural bankers, vets, contractors and so on are far more likely to be in a position to identify if there is a problem because they encounter farmers more frequently and in their natural environment. “These courses are about providing them with the tools to make a difference. For more information on the Marlborough seminar, please contact Top of the South Rural Support Trust co-ordinator Ian Blair on 021 429 844.
Kiwi Family Farm under threat At its October meeting, Marlborough Federated Farmers made a unanimous decision to write to Federated Farmers head office expressing its strong support for the traditional New Zealand family farm and its concern at the increasing number of corporate farming operations. Meat and Fibre Section chairman Gregg Harris said corporate farming was an investment into "industrialised food production" a style that was not needed in New Zealand. New Zealand farmers cared about environmental values and stock health but corporate operations were preoccupied with profits. "Yes some corporates do create wetlands and donate money to art galleries, but it's for the look rather than sincere". High Country section spokesman Aiden McKenzie of the Waihopai said the USA went down the corporate path 30 years ago and realised the mistake. He said two stations in the Waihopai valley were now owned by overseasbacked corporates for a carbon trading programme, with high country vehicle tracks, soil slipping and removal of native vegetation resulting. Nor did corporates participate in valley communities. Chairman Will Trollope pointed out if New Zealand encouraged the growth of corporate farming, then Federated Farmers would not exist in the foreseeable future.

As just one example, after the closure of the Golfer’s World course near Riverlands, the team’s golfers found themselves without a course to practice on. The Rarangi Golf Club has stepped up to the mark, offering the team members free use of their course. It was there that a small ceremony was held on Monday with members and supporters gathering to thank two other major sponsors, Specsavers and A1 Drycleaning. As well as free eye tests and glasses repairs, Specsavers supports the team in their fundraising Standing from left: Hayley Bann of Specsavers, Rarangi Golf Club representative Mark Roberts, activities in many ways, both at provincial and golfers Eden Crimp and Ryan Jones, and Chris Lane, president of Special Olympics Marlborough. national level.
