World Champions, Derry and Hefford By Les Whiteside Last week John Derry and his navigator Brent Hefford won the World UIM Jetboat Championships. For John the result was a dream come true. John grew up around jetboats, his father Blue raced for many years. John only became serious about the sport some five years ago. He has won the NZ jetboat championship three times, but the big one, the world championship had been elusive until last Friday. A ''very excited'' Derry has achieved that goal now. Winning the World UIM Jetboat championships raced on New Zealand southern rivers was huge for him, he says. Continued page 5

Josh shines in school and community life Josh Watson from Marlborough Boys’ College was last night named as the winner of the TrustPower Marlborough Youth Community Award for his service to school and community projects. The award was presented at the TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards at the Civic Theatre in Blenheim. Local high schools were asked to recommend one student to be considered for the award, and the nomination criteria included treating others with care and respect and being a good ambassador for the school and the Marlborough region. TrustPower spokeswoman Jess Somerville said Josh was a grounded, generous and motivated young man who had a remarkable ability to put his all into everything.

He was heavily involved in all aspects of school life at Marlborough Boys’ College, representing students’ views at Board of Trustees meetings and co-leading the school jazz band as the lead pianist. “Passionate about student voice, he is this year’s chair of the Student Council and been part of the group that progressed $20,000 worth of drinking fountains to be installed at their school,” she said. “On the sporting scene he has been a member of Marlborough’s High Performance Tennis Academy with representation and coaching over the past four years and on top of this completed his Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh. “This year he was also a lead member of the organising committee for the combined colleges

formal, with the oversight of the $40,000 budget and he coordinated his school’s World Vision fundraising team which gained more than $3000.” Josh also assisted with the technical elements for musical performances at the Civic Theatre. Run in conjunction with the TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards, the Youth Community Award is jointly run by TrustPower and the Marlborough District Council. Josh was presented with a trophy, framed certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 being given to a community group or organisation of his choice. Other finalists for the youth category were Gabby Mark from Marlborough Girls’ College and Robert Blankendaal from Rai Valley Area School.

Marlborough Boys' College student Josh Watson, 18, has won the TrustPower Marlborough Youth Community Award.

Mistletoe Bay Trust honoured at community awards Conservation group the Mistletoe Bay Trust was the Supreme Award winner at the 2013 TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards ceremony last night. For winning the Supreme Award, Mistletoe Bay Trust received a framed certificate, trophy and $1500 prize money. TrustPower spokeswoman Jess Somerville said the Mistletoe Bay Trust was formed 10 years ago by a group of ordinary Marlborough people with a passion for education, conservation and environmental sustainability. “Their vision was for a sustainable Eco Village facility at Mistletoe Bay and it grew out of the Department of Conservation investigating options for its on-going management.” She said they had developed the facility in the Queen Charlotte Sound with the support of countless volunteers and in the last 12

months had completed a classroom and community room, science laboratory, new camp kitchen facility and ablutions block. They had also built a fleet of six brand new optimist yachts to support their sailing programme. “Mistletoe Bay is one of this region’s real hidden gems, and the Eco Village developed by this group highlights all its best features in a sustainable way,” Ms Somerville said. “A huge congratulations to the passionate volunteers and trustees who dreamed up this concept and for their ironclad commitment to keeping a small piece of paradise protected, yet available for everyone.” TrustPower gave away over $5000 to various community groups through last night’’s awards, held at Blenheim’s Civic Theatre. Fifty-nine entries were received for 58 groups for this year’s TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards.

Blues & Brews cancelled for 2014 By Kristy Martin The news that Blenheim’s Blues, Brews and BBQs has been cancelled was met with shock and disbelief in the community yesterday. Organisers at Blenheim Round Table have announced that it is not viable to run the one-day beer and music festival in 2014. “Due to declining public support and changes to the event structures means we will not be running a Blues, Brews and BBQs event for 2014,” the group said in a

statement. Organisers declined to comment further. However, they have not ruled out the possibility the event might be resurrected in the future. The Sun hit the streets yesterday to ask people what they thought of the cancellation of the one day music and beer festival held at A&P showgrounds in February and most said they were disappointed. Celebrating summer with music, craft beers and outdoor cooking,

New census figures released Marlborough’s population has increased by 858 people since 2006, according to new census figures. Statistics New Zealand reports that Marlborough has 43,416 people and is the 15th-largest of New Zealand’s 16 regional council areas by population. Its population grew by two per cent between 2006 and 2013. Blues, Brews and BBQs has been an annual event in Blenheim for the past 19 years. The event’s own website boasts that it is an integral part of Marlborough’s entertainment calendar, attracting many hundreds of visitors to the region each year and donating profits to youth charities. One member of Blenheim Round Table, Mark Rea, said he was in the throes of organising a similar event, set to be held in January 2014.

“ T h e Ho m e Br ewe r s of Marlborough will still be hosting their annual brew competition, along with a great day planned with live music, local craft beer, wine, wonderful foods and refreshments,” he said. “There will loads of activities for the kids so stay tuned for a great family day out in the Marlborough sun.” A venue for the new event is yet to be determined.

How do you feel about Blenheim’s Blues, Brews and BBQs being cancelled?

Calls for Aged Care Commissioner Grey Power and the New Zealand Aged Care Association (NZACA) are calling on the Government and all political parties to appoint an Aged Care Commissioner to help protect the elderly from financial abuse. The two organisations have released a discussion document to highlight the issue of financial abuse and spark debate on options to stamp it out. “The number of cases where elderly people have been financially abused by the very person who is meant to be acting in their best interests is unfortunate,” said Roy Reid, president of Grey Power.

Donations and gifts sought for foster children

Kits for Kids co-ordinator Mary Hart with some recently donated items from businesses and members of the community.

Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Are you aware that many foster children arrive at their new placements with nothing but the clothes on their backs or with their belongings in a black rubbish sack? Foster carers want to be able to focus on the emotional needs when a child arrives, rather than having to race to find or buy what they need, such as clothing and toiletries. Earlier in the year the Sun profiled Blenheim woman Mary Hart who is co-ordinator for Foster Hope’s ‘Kits for Kids’, a charitable organisation which provides kits to children containing these essential items. She appealed for items to be donated for foster children and received fantastic support, but now with Christmas approaching Mary has run out of kits and is once again reaching out to the community for support. “When a child is uplifted and placed in a foster home they may only have very few belongings with them. “I know this well because one of my foster children was only two months old when he came to

Four-year-old Maia Keen brought in a bag of goodies to the Sun to donate to Kits for Kids.

me and all he had was a shoulder bag with mostly nappies in it,” she said. With Christmas comes an increase in domestic violence, Mary said; “A higher number of children are uplifted and the demand for these kits increase. It’s my aim to be able to hand out kits to these children so they don’t miss out,” she said. Mary welcomes donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, hairbrushes, underwear, socks, items of clothing, a soft toy to comfort the child as well as any Christmas gifts so they

can be wrapped and presented to the child. “I really am so grateful to the community for all its support to date, and I appreciate anything that can be donated for the kids in our community who are in need. “So far I have received a box full of toiletries from Redwoodtown Pharmacy and a bag of toy items from four-year-old Maia Keen, which I know will be gratefully accepted,” she said. Any donations can be taken into the Sun office on High Street in Blenheim, or you can contact Mary on (03) 578 8864.

Derry and Hefford World Champions Continued from page 1 Guided by navigator Brent Hefford, he raced the final 72km leg from Lake Wanaka to Old Cromwell in 27 minutes, holding on to the lead he set on day one of the eight-day, 16-leg competition. His overall time was the fastest by 19 minutes. Second-place went to Dale Whiteside of Canada who recorded 5.47:10. Derry had a slight shirmish early on, fortunately it didn’t happen again and the jetboat powered by a helicopter jet engine held together. Derry nearly didn't get to this years World Championships event, only deciding the day prior

to race. Derry has just recently opened the new Speights Ale House in Blenheim and was concerned he wouldn't have the time to compete. But family and friends rallied around to make it happen, he told the Sun newspaper. Navigator Brent Hefford transported the boat and supplies to Queenstown and made sure the boat was up to race conditions days prior to the event. I just flew in and drove the boat, Brent did all the hard-yakka says John. Still it was Derry's driving ability that kept them ahead of the pack leading from the first stage till the end.

The rain, fog and wind had been the biggest challenges of the week, making it difficult to see. Another Marlburian Greg Simpson finished in 26th place in his first World Jetboat Marathon. Greg could have finished closer but a slow time in the final stage cost him. Race organiser Tim Guthrie said despite the weather, it was ''exceptional'' to have 31 of the original 39 boats finish the race. Over the week, the boats and crews from New Zealand, Canada and Mexico covered 800km on South Island rivers including the Waitaki, Oreti, Dart, Waiau, and Clutha Rivers.(The Matukituki river stage was cancelled).

Youngsters celebrate multiculturalism Story and photos by Kristy Martin Leaps and Bounds Early Learning Centre held its World Games Day last week, encouraging the kids to celebrate multiculturalism. As a way of honouring the different nationalities and cultures within the centre, including Fiji, Australia, Germany, South Korea and Aotearoa, the children played

a variety of sports and activities at the Horton Park netball courts. Formula 1 racing, boomerang throwing, soccer and gumboot throwing were all on the agenda. Head teacher Jacinda Large said staff had created the World Games Day following the success of last year’s Mini Olympics. “World Games Day is about learning about the different

cultures within our centre and fundraising for the Marlborough Migrant Centre through gold coin donation,” she said. “The teachers researched each culture by speaking to the parents of the children “The children had a great time and the parent and whanau support was really good.”

With the return of the warmer weather and Labour weekend almost here, Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) is reminding boaties to be safe this season. About one in four New Zealanders owns or uses a boat, but MNZ said too many were risking their lives by not taking the steps to stay safe on board. Thousands of Kiwis will launch their boats this weekend, and MNZ is urging everyone to wear their lifejackets at all times while on the water. MNZ’s Education and Communications Manager, Pania Shingleton, said more people were taking steps to stay safe on the water, but a sizeable proportion of boaties still believed they were immune to danger. Fourteen people died in recreational boating accidents in New Zealand waters last year, and by the end of September this year a

further 11 people had died. Ms Shingleton says three-quarters of those deaths may have been avoided had basic steps – like wearing lifejackets – been taken. In the Marlborough Sounds, there were two fatal boating accidents in September. Although separate incidents, both involved men who had fallen overboard and were not wearing lifejackets. Wearing a lifejacket, knowing the weather, carrying two communications devices and avoiding alcohol is expected of all boaties, Ms Shingleton said. “All of our research shows that people who wear lifejackets on the water are much more likely to survive if something goes wrong. “Many of those who die in recreational boating accidents each year – especially men aged 40 and over – could have been saved had they been wearing a lifejacket.”

Principal’s memories of fireworks show Story by Celeste Lodewyk This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Whitney Street School’s Lights over Marlborough fireworks show set to be held on November 16. Over time the show has established itself as being an iconic event for Marlborough, One person who holds many fond memories of the ‘early days’ is school principal Alan Straker. In 1984 Alan’s children attended the school. “I remember the show was held on the school grounds, of course it was a lot smaller then and attracted around 1000 people. “There was a bonfire in the playground and I can remember flames leaping up into the surrounding tree tops, and the toffee apple stall was very popular. “The fireworks were smaller then and cost under $1000 to purchase. Now they cost around $9000,” he said. Nearly 20 years ago the Ministry of Education sent out a directive that fireworks could not be held on school grounds. According to Alan a group of core parents were determined to see the show carry on, so they negotiated for it to move to A&P Park. “It worked well. It’s grown signficantly bigger and draws around 5000 people and is now a much anticipated event on the

community calendar,” he said. Lights over Marlborough fireworks show has always been the major fundraiser for the school. “What we raise is a signficant source of income for the school. It provides the extras that parents would otherwise have to cover themselves. “In the beginning $2000 was considered a good profit, now we consider $20,000 to

be a goal amount to raise. “The money has gone towards purchasing computers, picnic tables, playground equipment, and this year it will be going towards the repair of our swimming sheds,” Alan said. The show kicks off from 6pm with loads of family entertainment, activities and fun for the children as well as live music and hot food.

I think the wardens could ease up a bit. As soon as you get out of the car they are in your face.

I don’t come into town that often, so they aren’t too bad. There is not much else that could be done.

I’m originally from Wellington, where the cost for parking is three times higher. The fines are much more expensive too, so I’m not going to complain!

I don’t like that they give tickets for having no warrant or registration. That should be a job for the cops.

It doesn’t really affect me, as I park where it is free and I’ve never really had to deal with the wardens.

Nursing leads to a life of challenges Julie Berriman, manager of Lakewood Home, has had a rich and varied nursing career. Here she talks to Glenise Dreaver about her experiences and beliefs. Julie Berriman, manager of Lakewood/Wairakau Home and Hospital, has had a long and varied nursing career, including a 15-year stint as a New Zealand Army nurse. She rose to the rank of captain and remembers her time in the army with great affection. In the end, in coming to Woodbourne she met her husband, a driver, and Blenheim became home. “He didn’t want to live anywhere where there were traffic lights!” There was disappointment during army service though – she well remembers being one of the group of medical staff accompanying 84 veterans to Monte Casino in 1994, on the fiftieth anniversary of the historic battle there. “I never got my bottom pinched in Italy!” (The Brigadier told her he was thinking of paying their driver to do it and it added insult to injury when some of the male soldiers got their bottoms pinched.) Looking after the veterans, aged up to 94, was challenging with one in particular, a wartime nursing officer.” “Nothing was done the way they used to do. She let us know. Frequently.” Light-hearted anecdotes aside, Julie found Italy incredibly moving. All those graves with the inscription ‘Known only unto God’... I cried when I saw that.” It was in 1989 she’d decided to join the regular army after being in the Territorials. Much of her time there was in training and managing staff – unsurprising given her qualifications. A registered nurse, with a BA in Nursing and Psychology she also has a post graduate diploma in psychology which, she says, she uses ever day. Julie started her registered nursing in oncology. She trained in plastic surgery at Burwood Hospital, holding a post graduate qualification. She also worked as a theatre nurse and at Burnham, wrote courses for army medics and trained SAS soldiers

in emergency care. Her car park bore the title Senior Nursing Officer Training; “So ‘S.N.O.T’,” she says with a big smile. “I’m proud of the immunisation programme I set up at Trentham too. There had been nothing like it.” Now at Lakewood with its 24 elderly and disabled clients, her work might seem less adventurous, but the challenges are there – just different. The privately-owned hospital operates on the very limited government funding provided, with no added costs to residents. Yet they provide for all their needs. “We get $100 a day to provide all cares and doctors’ visits.” “Yet some, perhaps most, are eating better than they ever have. To a menu approved by a dietician.” Treats are provided too. “We even had whitebait patties on Friday for tea.” While Lakewood is lucky in that it has a loyal staff with very low turnover, she says they just cannot afford to pay them what they are worth. “Because that would mean compromising what is provided for residents.” Currently, Julie’s elated by this month’s Ministry audit, “Just two things to note out of a list of hundreds of requirements.” The building, in Lakings Road has been a lovely old residential home and that is key she says. “We love it because it is a home. We let patients bring some of their belongings, and their own bed, chest of drawers and chair, for example.” Quality of life is also enhanced by trips out. “With our coordinator and the Red Cross and visits from Guides and Brownies and schoolchildren, who spend quality time with residents.” But, she says, it would be lovely to have more.

‘Known only unto God’... “I cried when I saw that.”

Hunting legend features in Picton author’s latest book By Celeste Lodewyk Picton based author Marion Day’s latest publication, Injun Joe, The Legend of Smoking Joe Collins has been a project close to her heart. Set for release this month, Injun Joe is the biography of Joe Collins, her late partner who was killed in a helicopter accident in 1996. Joe, born Wellwyn Harris Collins was, and still is, a well known hunter and helicopter-hunter pilot and his story has become legend since his passing. “Joe was my partner for 16 years and was legendary in hunting and aviation circles, and not always in the best way. “When I was approached by Graham Gurr of Halcyon Press I Injun Joe, The Legend of Smoking Joe Collins is the latest book written was hesitant at first. I had never by Picton based author Marion Day.

written a biography and didn’t write non fiction, I wasn’t even sure if I knew how.

“To be asked for a book is what writers dream of, so two years on Injun Joe is the result,” she said. Marion said writing the book took an “emotional toll” on her. “At times my keyboard was saturated with tears, especially when I wrote the final chapter on the days before and after Joe’s death. “It was also hard on my partner Steve. I had got so deep into the book that it was like reliving those years again. “I kept calling Steve ‘Joe’. He’d say, “Er-hem... I’m Steve. Steve was also one of four proof readers, so I think we were both glad when the book was completed,” she said. Marion’s previous publications include books Cor Blimey, Mate and Blow Me Socks Off.

Called ‘Marlborough Fayre’, the women practice weekly at St Andrew’s hall and are encouraging others to head along and try the the English folk dancing style. Group spokesperson Judy Shone describes Morris dancing as “energetic fun”. “We welcome anyone who wants to have fun either as a musician or to learn our dances,” she said. “We are not competitive, age and ability are no barrier and membership is free. “We even provide the traditional

Morris accoutrements of hankies, bells, garlands and sticks.” There used to be a mixed Morris dancing group in Blenheim before it disbanded several years ago. “A few of us felt a bit lost without doing Morris dancing and we’d been going over to Nelson periodically, but it was a long way to go,” Ms Shone said. There are currently six dancers in Marlborough Fayre, but Ms Shone hopes it will grow. She says members of the public might catch them dancing in Seymour Square or at markets, weddings and rest homes. The group practises on Tuesday evenings. To join, phone 5775098.

Schools resilient to quakes Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye says groundbreaking research released by the Ministry of Education has found timber-framed classrooms are extremely resilient to earthquakes. “This is good news for the education budget because we will not have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on earthquake strengthening these buildings,” Ms Kaye says. “The research has confirmed these buildings are safe and resilient in quakes. This means that we can focus on modernising buildings to provide better learning environments.

Family safety Keeping you and your family safe whereever you are is a topic that will never grow old or lose importance. Crime can occur anywhere, anytime and can affect any member of your family. The best solution is to know how to prevent this crime from entering your home, and educating children how to stay safe. In the home: Check that all your doors and windows are secured each night when the family retires to bed as well as everytime you leave the home. Fencing around your property is also a deterrent to burglars, particularly when fences are high and locked. Security lights work well, illuminating dark areas and also helping to prevent burglars from entering your home. Home security alarms highly reduce the chances of losing property through burglary. Children: Young children are at risk even in the most caring families, schools and communities. Prevention is the key to protecting a child’s personal safety.

Teach them not to give personal information to a stranger or to someone who makes them feel uncomfortable. Remind them to always check with a parent or adult in charge before going anywhere, outlining where they are going, who will be with them and what they will be doing. Create some family safety rules for children when answering the door, phone or using the internet. Safety checklist: • There is safety in numbers. You are more likely to be targeted if you are on your own. Stick with someone else wherever you can, especially at night. • Have your cellphone handy to call for help if you need it. Don’t hesitate to dial 111 if you feel your safety is at risk. Sometimes just seeing you make the call will put off a possible attacker. • Try not to look vulnerable when on your own. Walk purposefully and don’t be distracted by things like texting. Most potential attackers will target someone who appears weak, and easy for them to have overpower. - If you feel unsafe in your home or are a victim of abuse, contact the Police or Women’s Refuge.

Cybercrime, what is it? Every three seconds an identity is stolen and it can infect your PC within four minutes of connecting to the internet. What is it? Cybercrime! You hear a lot about cybercrime, but what exactly is it about? The simple answer is; “It’s complicated!” Like traditional crime, cybercrime can take many shapes and can occur nearly anytime or anyplace. With today’s technology, particularly with mobile phones, criminals committing cybercrime can do anything from fraud, unauthorised access and cyberstalking through to hacking, identity theft and bank/e-commerce fraud. It can even go as far as harassment, predation, extortion, blackmail, stock market manipulation, complex corporate espionage, and planning or carrying out terrorist activities. The solution? Visit your local, friendly computer retailer or professional IT specialist who can give you advice on the best protective software and how to avoid becoming a victim of cybercrime.

Graduate wins Man Booker prize Champagne corks were popping in Wellington last week at the news that Eleanor Catton had won the prestigious 2013 Man Booker Prize with her novel The Luminaries – and nowhere were the cheers more heartfelt than at Victoria University’s International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML), where Eleanor did her MA in Creative Writing in 2007. Director of the IIML and 2013 Arts Foundation Laureate Damien Wilkins says, ‘I hope Ellie’s win means that readers and writers receive a great jolt about this thing we call New Zealand writing. Our national literature is often boxed up as worthy and an obligation. The Luminaries jumps out of the box, and reminds us that imaginative acts from here belong in the larger conversation of culture. It’s not that we’ve received a stamp of approval—more that a wonderful novel simply asserts its right to be read.’ Wilkins adds that ‘Ellie’s achievement is of course an individual triumph, made from years of meticulous work and motored by massive

skill. At the IIML, where Ellie wrote her first novel, we also like her generosity in always suggesting that the community of writers she studied with and became friends with, has been a sustaining force in her writing.’ Aspiring writers hoping to join that community and get their writing career off to a good start still have time to apply for 2014 courses. Here are some of the comments graduates have made about what it’s like to be a writer at the International Institute of Modern Letters.

Eleanor Catton (Writing for the Page, 2007) “The IIML experience was absolutely invaluable to me. The programme equipped me with the tools, vocabulary, and confidence to begin to take myself seriously as a writer.” Eleanor’s first novel The Rehearsal was written for her MA thesis. It has been translated into a dozen languages. Her second novel, The Luminaries, has just been awarded the 2013 Man Booker Prize. Tusi Tamasese (Scriptwriting, 2007) “I hadn’t known what to expect with the MA course—university, academia and I hadn’t ever exactly been best friends. I had heard great things about the course and thought I’d see if I could get in. I did. It was a great experience, to try to hone the craft in an environment with generous, creative, supportive people who know what it’s like to dream, write, dream, doubt, start over, write, doubt, start over, write, etc etc...” Tusi’s internationally acclaimed feature film The Orator was written at the IIML.

Too old to learn? Never!

There are people who do not pursue tertiary education during their early days. These people have several reasons for not pursuing their studies at that time. Firstly, they may lack the financial support for their study. Secondly, they may not be able to meet the entrance criteria set by the training facility. Thirdly, they may lack the interest to study. Fourthly, they may not be able to find their desired course in any of the colleges. Hence, they started looking for a job with whatever qualification they have, eventually found a job and began to work. Is it too late for these people to learn again? The answer is no. It is never too late for them to learn as long as they have the means and the opportunity to do so. If they are

Improve brain power for study Embarking on study and looking for ways to boost your intellect, stave off fatigue and keep your mind alert through hours of lectures and study programmes? You might be surprised to know that not only are there simple, natural ways to accomplish these things, but also techniques and even food groups which may give a hearty boost to your brainpower. Animal-based Omega-3 fats Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, an Omega-3 fat, is an essential structural component of both your brain and retina. Approximately 60 percent of your brain is composed of fats, 25 percent of which is DHA. Omega-3 fats such as DHA are considered essential because your body cannot produce it, and must get it from your daily diet. Sleep Sleep is not only essential for regenerating your physical body, but it is imperative for reaching new mental insights and being able to see new creative solutions to old problems. Sleep removes the blinders and helps ‘reset’ your brain to look at problems from a different perspective, which is crucial to creativity. Vitamin D Activated vitamin D receptors increase nerve growth in your brain, and researchers have also located metabolic pathways for

Challenge Your Mind One of the simplest methods to boost your brain function is to keep on learning. The size and structure of neurons and the connections between them actually change as you learn. This can take on many forms above and beyond book learning to include activities like traveling, learning to play a musical instrument or speak a foreign language, or participating in social and community activities.

You can use these signs to work out if your baby is too hot or too cold. 3. Your baby’s sense of smell is much stronger than yours and he will use it to get to know you in the early weeks. To help him, try to avoid really strong perfumes, deodorants or washing powder and be aware that some household smells may be quite overpowering for him. 4. At birth it takes your baby between five and 10 minutes to get used to something new, but by three months it will only take between 30 sec-

onds and two minutes. And at six months, your baby will adjust in less than 30 seconds. 11. Your newborn baby prefers human speech to any other sound, which is why, when she is older and learning to talk, she will try to imitate human sounds rather than inanimate noises such as the telephone ringing. 5. Touch is one of your baby’s most advanced senses at birth and even premature babies born as early as 25 weeks are aware of being touched. Your baby’s sense of touch develops from head to toe, so her mouth is the first region to become sensitive, which is why young babies put everything in their mouths.

Buckle up kids over Labour weekend Plunket is urging New Zealand families to think about their kids’ safety while they’re on the roads this holiday weekend. “Over this weekend have a great break, enjoy time with family and friends and remember everyone has to be properly buckled up”, said Sue Campbell, Plunket’s National Child Safety Advisor. “Car crashes are one of the biggest dangers

to New Zealand children. “We have one of the highest child road fatality rates in the OECD (international Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). “Around five children are killed or injured every week on this country’s roads. “The simple truth is that car seats save lives.”

If you are unsure about your child’s car seat installation, or you need to hire an additional car seat for visiting children over Labour weekend, Plunket recommend getting expert assistance from a child restraint technician. The technician can also advise about the best car seat for your child’s age and size, and one that is best suited to your car. Children need to be buckled into a car

seat every time they are riding in the car, no matter how short the journey. Babies need to be in a car seat from their very first ride. The law currently requires all children under five to be in an appropriate child restraint. However, from November 1 a new law comes into effect which requires children to be in a restraint until their seventh birthday.

The Government will make an interim investment into Team New Zealand to retain key team members while a decision is made on a challenge for the 35th America’s Cup, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce announced. Cabinet has agreed to provide $5 million in bridging funding to Team New Zealand to ensure key team members including designers, sailors, support crew and administration staff are secured until May 2014, by which time Team New Zealand plans to finalise a decision on its involvement in the next regatta. The previous government made an interim investment on a similar basis, although for a larger amount of $10 million, after the 2007 America’s Cup regatta. “The 2013 America’s Cup was a great demonstration of the talent and innovation that New Zealand holds within its marine and technology sectors. It also provided a very high profile for New Zealand expertise and innovation in the world’s largest economy. We are keen to retain the knowledge and skills of the team for a further challenge, should that prove feasible,” Mr Joyce said. “There is no doubt the 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco was hugely beneficial to New Zealand businesses, including our food and wine, ICT, tourism and marine industries who all leveraged successfully off the event. “A thorough evaluation of the benefits to the New Zealand economy of the Government’s $36 million investment in the 2013 America’s Cup is under way and is expected in March 2014. “Team New Zealand has now commenced planning for the next challenge. “However it will not be possible for them to finalise their involvement until such time as they know key elements of the regatta, including where and when it will be held. “The Government will assess its further involvement based on a strong business case from the team, and the benefits our involvement would bring for New Zealand exporters and our New Zealand brand.”

“Health is definitely our best wealth and we should care enough about ourselves to invest in it.” This is the philosophy of Reflexologist Karen Mackay who recently established a private clinic above Blenheim’s UFS Pharmacy at the corner of High and Queen Streets. Karen has already established clinics in the Havelock and Pelorus districts and is thrilled to be bringing her business, Five Elements Reflexology and Skincare, to Blenheim. “I very much look forward to working with people who live in Marlborough, in assisting them with their quest for achieving and maintaining good health and ‘being in their element’, with Five Elements at their service,” she said. Reflexology is not only a profession for Karen, it has been something she has enjoyed for more than 20 years. She first studied for her practicing certificate in Reflexology 24 years ago while working as a teacher. She had no intention of making it a career, she simply used it as a therapy on family and friends. This changed however, when after leaving the teaching profession, Karen realised that her true passion lay with Reflexology and she pursued further training. She qualified with a Diploma through Aromaflex Academy in Nelson and went on to open clinics in Pelorus, Havelock and now Blenheim. In addition to Ref lexology Karen also makes her own skin products, inspiration she said came from a student suffering from a severe inflammatory skin condition. “While I was teaching a student had a condition which had plagued her for a long time, she was scratching herself to bits. I did some research, made my ‘Skin Tonic’ product and gave it to her to try. “Within three weeks her condition had healed and it was then that I began to trial it more extensively. I soon found there

was a market for such a product that was natural and not a steroid,” she said. Five Elements also produces a Sunscreen and ‘Face Lift’ moisturising cream all derived from natural ingredients grown organically in Marlborough. “I am passionate about the environment, so I am prepared to put my money where my heart is and will donate 10 percent of my skincare profits to conservation in New Zealand. “The first recipient will be The Bat Recovery Project at Pelorus Bridge,” she said. For more information or to book an appointment with Karen, see her advertisement on this page.

Students create aprons for Fun Day Story and photo provided Tailor-made aprons will help students and staff be more recognisable to visitors at the Linkwater School Fun Day this weekend. All staff and students at the annual fundraising event, to be held this Sunday, will wear the aprons, which have been created by the senior room students. The children were consulted on the colour choice, and principal Deb Leov and Fun Day coordinator Barbara Faulls went to Nelson to select the fabric. Another parent, Dide Neiman, donated her skills, a pattern, and

two sewing machines. The class was delegated the tasks of cutting out, pinning, ironing, overlocking, and sewing. Ten-year-old Jack Clerke enjoyed all aspects of the day, especially the ironing. “We don’t get to do much ironing at our place,” he laughed. The completed aprons were then taken to Jann Hook, who embroidered the writing onto the front. The Fun Day will be held at the Linkwater community hall and the school grounds from 10am-2pm.

It will feature an all day café, garlic mussels, BBQ food, games for the kids, races, plants, white elephant, ice creams, raffles, rides, bouncy castle and more. The event will be held in conjunction with the Linkwater Fine Art Auction, which takes place this Saturday night. Fifty pieces of art, mostly from Marlborough artists, will be sold by live auction from 7pm. The evening will start at 5pm with local wine and cheese and a chance to view the artworks on display at the Linkwater community hall.

Chef ditches kitchen for classroom By Kristy Martin Marlborough chef Chris Fortune is back in the region, this time facing food critics who are much younger, but just as tough. Teaching school children how to cook with his travelling roadshow “Kids Can Cook”, Fortune has visited 145 schools this year from Invercargill to Whangarei. Fortune says Marlborough is leading the charge when it comes to edible gardens in schools. Earlier this week he visited Springlands School where he whipped up a batch of apple and silverbeet crepes for the Year 3 students with ingredients grown in their own schoolyard. “Marlborough has good gardens, good cooking programs and Springlands is a shining example of how to do it,” he said.

Marlborough chef Chris Fortune teaches 'sous chef', Springlands School student Stella Henry, 7, how to flip crepes.

“You’ve got a great school garden here and intelligent kids

who are willing to give it a go.” Fortune, winner of reality show Hell’s Kitchen and founder of Marlborough Farmer’s Market, says Kids Can Cook is all about “sowing the seeds”. It teaches youngsters to take an interest in growing their own seasonal produce and using it in the kitchen. “Our focus is to look at what food choices are grown locally and what is available to students and their families, as well as the impact that this has on them, their community and globally,” he said. “It’s a refreshing change to cooking in kitchens and being able to work with our next generation.” Kids Can Cook will also visit Mayfield School, Seddon and Wairau Valley.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there I do not sleep I am a thousand winds that blow I am the diamond glints on snow I am the sunlight of ripened grain I am the gentle falling rain When you awaken in the morning’s hush I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight I am the soft stars that shine at night Do not stand at my grave and cry I am not there, I did not die Very sadly missed by Shirley and Graeme Hawtin, David, Lianne, Grace, Charlotte and Flynn. There’s a family who misses you sadly, In a home where you used to be, A family who wanted to keep you, But that was not to be. You left us some wonderful memories, Sorrows too great to be told, But to us who loved and lost you, Memories we have of you will never grow old.

From your loving family.

Awards honour outstanding youth Six outstanding young Marlborough people have been selected as recipients for the inaugural Youth Civic Awards. The awards, established by the Youth Council and run along the same lines as the District Council’s Civic Awards, recognise voluntary service given within Marlborough by young people between the ages of 13 and 20. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman

along with a selection committee chose the first year’s recipients from a field of 22 nominations for the new award. The 2013 Youth Civic Awards winners were: • Elizah Hudson • Hadley Anderson • Fiona Wratt • Tailah Love

• Sarah Millar • Jenny Argyle The Mayor presented the awards at a function held last Saturday night. This was done in conjunction with a Youth Variety Concern being organised by the Marlborough Youth Council. Mr Sowman said it was inspiring to see, not only the commitment of the winners, but the

overall calibre of those who were nominated. He praised the recipients of the awards, thanking them for their contribution to Marlborough and for giving up their time for others without expectation of reward. “It should give everyone great confidence in the future of this region to see what the next generation of community leaders and volunteers looks like,” he said.

Martial arts great for young and old By Kristy Martin Chan’s Martial Arts Tasman has opened a new branch in Picton and are currently seeking new members. “We are a Kung Fu school that provides a unique syllabus that covers all aspects of self defence, discipline, fitness and wellbeing,” said head instructor Sophia Buckingham. “We have a range of students from the ages of seven to 60-plus who have found great benefits from training with us.

“Any age is a good age to start.” Chan’s Martial Arts Tasman also has branches in Blenheim and Nelson, but Ms Buckingham said there was a need to establish a school in Picton. While there were other martial arts groups operating in town, Chan’s offered a point of difference in that it was a school and not a club, she said. It was not focused on competition or sparring, but instead had a set syllabus that instructors guided their students through.

Participants are asked to gather at 5.30pm, with start time at 5:45pm for walkers and 6pm for runners. Meet beside the Taylor River just along from the Alfred Street Bridge, down from the Clubs of Marlborough.

“We are more flowing and subtle and there is less strain on the body,” Ms Buckingham said. “That’s why we have many members who are over 60.” Ms Buckingham said it was a great family sport and that her partner, daughter and sister were all involved. The group trains at the Picton School Hall on Monday and Friday evenings. First three lessons are free. For more details, visit www. kungfu.net.nz
