Iconic Spring Creek business sold after 27 years

By Kristy Martin After 27 years of serving the Spring Creek community, Four Square supermarket owners Allan and Adrian Withers (pictured) are set to hang up their grocers’ aprons. The business has been sold and the new owners will take over next month. It will be mixed emotions for the father and son team, who first bought the iconic store back in 1986. While Allan, 72, and Adrian, 42, are certainly keen for a break, they have plenty of fond memories and have enjoyed watching many of their customers grow up and start families. Continued page 2

Red Cross annual Rose Day By Kristy Martin By purchasing a red rose for a gold coin today, you will be helping the local Red Cross chapter deliver vital humanitarian services within the community. Today is Red Rose Day, an annual fundraiser for the Red Cross to generate money for disaster relief programmes, first aid training and services that improve the lives of the vulnerable. Marlborough branch president Stella Robb said the money used would stay within the local community and would help fund programmes
like “People Savers”, which teaches school children basic first aid skills. “Save a Mate” is another programme giving young adults the skills to cope when a friend is overcome by drugs and alcohol. Red Cross also goes to the aid of people affected by
natural disasters, delivers meals on wheels and operates community transport services. Pre-ordered

Spring Creek business sold after 27 years Continued from page 1 “In some instances we have seen three generations of one family come through,” Allan explained. “The kids who stood waiting for the bus and would dash in at the last minute to buy lollies, now their kids are doing exactly the same thing,” added Adrian. Today the supermarket, on State Highway 1, includes a deli, bakery and post shop and stocks a variety of local wines, including the Withers’ own “Old Shop” label. But, back in the day, “it used to be an old general store with two petrol pumps right out on the roadside,” Allan recalls. “We used to get told by the authorities that the shop shouldn’t be in the middle of
the road, but the reason it was is because the shop was here before the road.” Adrian joined his father working at the store when he was just 16. The first employee they took on was a local schoolgirl who is now a police constable. Other memories include watching local children catch eels in the creek, witnessing a customer’s car catch fire in the early ’90s and unearthing an old cellar when the old store was demolished for the rebuild. The new supermarket opened in June 2002 and Adrian remembers his father firmly stating that he would give it up after two years. It didn’t happen back in 2004, but it will become a reality at the end of this year.
The new owners will come on board from November 25, but Allan and Adrian will stay on until Christmas. After that, it’s a new chapter for both men. Allan will retire, focusing on several hobbies and spending time with his grandchildren. For Adrian, it will be a much-needed holiday, including boating and fishing, because it has been a long time since he has had more than two days off in a row. Both men wanted to thank their staff and customers for the continued support. “It’s been so enjoyable,” Allan said. “We’ve had some great staff and a great team here today and we get a lot of loyal support from the community.”

Steam was king again – for a day
JA 1240 steams out of Picton yesterday.
Story and Photo by Glenise Dreaver. Yesterday, Jessica (better known as JA 1240) rode the tracks for the first time in 42 years as it travelled from Picton to Christchurch. The late Peter Coleman, from Marlborough, had bought the steam locomotive as scrap in 1971, for what his brother in law Raynor Hanson recalled was some $300 a tonne. “And there’s about 100 tonnes in it,” he said. JA1240 was at first towed to a siding near the meatworks at Riverlands, then on to Pe-
ter’s property at Ben Morven, where he reassembled it on rails. Train collector Ian Welch bought the engine after Peter’s death in 1991, and the restoration was completed in Auckland. This week, Jessica was towed to Wellington and put on the ferry, but only after she cooled down and the boiler had been emptied for safety reasons. From there, it moved on to the main trunk line south under its own steam for the first time since it completed its
last Dunedin-Christchurch run in 1971. The excitement of steam was clear as dozens of vehicles and hundreds of spectators lined vantage points along the line from Picton to Blenheim to see the train after it left Picton at 8.45pm on its trip to Ferrymead. The 150th anniversary of the founding of New Zealand’s railways is being marked over Labour Weekend there and other historic engines and train memorabilia will make for train enthusiasts’ heaven.

By Kristy Martin St Joseph’s Primary School in Picton has been the target of repeated vandalism which is upsetting the children and frustrating staff. Principal James McMullan said he was fed up with having to replace damaged property, as it was money that could be spent on the kids. In the past few weeks, the small Otago Street school has had a drinking fountain pulled from a wall, a gate kicked off its hinges, heat pump grills ripped off and benches overturned. “The kids are really gutted, they take it personally,” Mr McMullan said. “We’ve had to put in extra security lights and we are even talking about installing cameras. “I would have much rather spent that few thousand dollars on the children.” It had cost the school $183 to replace the gate that was kicked

There were other “annoying” pranks too, like swings tied together and hundreds of stones dumped on the netball courts. “We’ve contacted the police and we’ve done a letterbox drop to houses around the school,” Mr McMullan said. “Somebody gave a description of three guys, about 12 years old, but that was at night, in the dark. “We’ve never had this problem before. “Our office manager Judith has been here 20 years and she doesn’t remember ever having a problem like this. “We’re concerned because it seems to be escalating. “We’re not just talking about pranks now, it’s become wilful damage and these kids can get into a bit of trouble for it.” Anyone who sees suspicious activity around the school should contact police.

Cops out in force Police will be out in force over Labour Day weekend, with all available officers in the Tasman District policing the roads and aiming to prevent road trauma. Marlborough, Nelson Bays and the West Coast will have high visibility road policing and reduced speed tolerance from this afternoon until Tuesday morning. District Road Policing Manager Inspector Jenni Richardson said that during the last five Labour Weekends there were a total of 59 crashes in the district. Four were fatal and six involved serious injury.
Call to Picton residents Picton councillor David Oddie is urging Picton residents with an interest in the Picton Foreshore Reserve area to put forward views so council can be sure it hears all voices. A public meeting to discuss the draft Picton Foreshore Reserve Management Plan will be held on Tuesday, October 29 at 2pm at the memorial steps on the foreshore. Councillor Oddie wants as many Picton people as possible to take the opportunity to speak up as to how the town presents itself as the look and feel of the foreshore reserve is considered.

Lion Foundation pledges $150,000 to new theatre
By Kristy Martin The new ASB Civic Theatre in Blenheim has received another generous cash injection, this time from The Lion Foundation. The Lion Foundation, a charitable trust that returns cash from venues and gaming machines nationwide back into the community, has pledged $150,000 over the next three years. Representatives from The Lion Foundation were, coincidentally, in Marlborough this week when the funding for the theatre was announced. Chief executive Murray Reade said The Lion Foundation was delighted to support the local project. “We see the development of this regionwide facility as important not only from an arts perspective, but for a wide range of community initiatives and look forward to seeing the benefits it will bring both from a cultural, but also economic development perspective,” Mr Reade said. Mr Reade thanked the contribution of Lion venues Fairweathers and The Cornerstone in Blenheim, Woodbourne Tavern, The Crow Tavern in Picton and the people of the Marlborough region who supported these local venues, helping to make the theatre project possible. “Having an asset like this will provide significant benefit to the people of the Marlborough region and we look forward to supporting its development over the coming years” he said. The $17 million ASB Civic Theatre, on Hutcheson Street, is expected to be completed in April 2015.

Local firms working on butter factory corner By Glenise Dreaver Work is well advanced on making Blenheim’s “Butter Factory” corner safer, with the construction being undertaken by local workers, working from Fulton Hogan and Aurecon design offices in Blenheim. It is expected that the corner’s multiple hazards will be consigned to history by Christmas.. The work is being done where State Highway 1 (SH1) and the Alabama Road junction meet near the main trunk railway line on a sweeping curve on the road to Christchurch. The factory also obscured the view and after the $640,000 purchase was made in late 2010 , it was demolished in February 2012. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said a number of crashes had
occurred on the corner over the years and the upgrade would be welcome news for all users, including the wine, trucking and tourist industries. It would also provide efficiency gains for freight operators he said. Work in lowering the speed limit and adding barriers and better warning signs was already done he said. There will now be a left hand slip lane, a right hand turning bay, and 25 metres queuing distance for drivers wanting to cross the railway line. He said it was tricky, because there was a sudden curve, limited space for turning and the main South Island rail line ran parallel to the highway. Inadequate stacking distance between the rail line and the highway meant drivers didn’t have enough space to queue safely, he said.

Parking fines Regarding unfair parking fines, i failed a wof on my ute, as the muffler needed work. Took the vehicle to murrays mufflers who by the way do a great job at reasonable rates. During that day the vehicle was moved to the roadside as the work had been completed. I received tickets for no wof and reg which is something i couldnt obtain without the wof total of $450. I took my failed wof dated the previous week and tickets to marlborough roads to appeal them thinking that it wouldnt be an issue. They refused. Reading your article in the last ‘sun’ it strikes me that acording to the council they have admitted to ‘writing off’ 1500 tickets last year alone. If my situation didnt warrant writing the ticket off then there must have been 1500 tickets that were seen to b even less fair.

I agree with almost everything you wrote- apart from the retailers being leeches.. those legal drugs aren’t that cheap, nor do the retailers force people to smoke them and is in fact a fine display of supply and demand. Prohibition has been tried and has failed - just ask the gangs. “Dont support the suppliers”, is narrow minded and will undoubtedly fail. We should support our mates - instead of demonising drugs, we should offer better education. Instead of making users criminals, we should be supporting them so they feel they have better choices. Ceremony marks history book launch The day has finally arrived for Tua Marina folk eagerly awaiting the release of the new history book, The Calm Beyond: Tua Marina and the Waikakaho - From the Wairau Affray to Today. The book has been compiled by local writer Cynthia Brooks and details the rich history of the Tua Marina and Waikakaho region and the fascinating lives of its people. A ceremony will be held tomorrow at the Tua Marina Memorial Hall to mark

Celery, a worthy challenge Although celery can pose a challenge for home gardeners, the resulting harvest of versatile, delicious vegetables is worth every effort. How to plant: Harden off seedlings before transplanting by reducing water slightly, and keeping them outdoors for a couple hours a day. Transplant seedlings 10 to 12 inches apart, direct sow seeds ¼ inch deep. These will need to be thinned to 12 inches apart when they reach a b o u t six inches high. Mulch and water directly after planting. Care: Celery is a heavy feeder. It also requires lots of water. Make sure to provide plenty of water during the entire growing season, especially during hot, dry weather. If celery does not get enough water, the stalks will be dry, and small. Add plenty of compost and mulch around the plants to retain moisture. Fertilize regularly. Add mulch as needed, to help retain soil moisture and add nutrients. Tie growing celery stalks together to keep them from sprawling. Tip: Celery will be bitter if it isn't blanched. Blanching is achieved by covering the plants to protect them from the sun. As the plants grow, pile soil up around them to blanch the stems. Having the plants fairly close together will also help blanching.

Celery Stir Fry Recipe Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes Serves 6 as a side dish. We found the best way to julienne the celery is to slice off the root end and any part of the celery beyond the main stalk. Cut the stalks in thirds, or if they are very long, quarters, and then cut each of those pieces in half lengthwise. This gives you a manageable, flat surface to slice into matchsticks. Nancy's original recipe calls for using a high quality rapeseed oil (another name for canola oil) and/or light sesame oil. We added a little dark sesame oil at the finish which was just lovely, so you might want to try that too. INGREDIENTS 2 Tbsp high quality rapeseed oil (canola oil) or light sesame oil 3 dried chile peppers, broken in half 4 cups julienned celery 1-2 Tbsp soy sauce (to taste) METHOD Heat the oils and chiles in a wok or frying pan over high heat for 90 seconds, or until the chiles become fragrant and the seeds sizzle. Add the celery and stir-fry for 3 minutes. Add the soy sauce and stir-fry one more minute. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Rural Women New Zealand has applauded this week’s announcement that the special significance of the rural delivery service has been recognised in the New Zealand Post 2013 Deed of Understanding. Urban areas may be reduced to a three day mail service from July 1 2015, but the five day a week rural delivery service will remain unchanged, except on runs that already have a lower frequency.

Blenheim agricultural and viticultural contractors MacKay AG Ltd are the proud local stockists of ECTOL Protect and Grow fertiliser. Owner Colin MacKay swears by the organic plant and lawn fertiliser, particularly when it comes to frost protection for vineyards, as he has seen the results with his own eyes. Mr MacKay, whose company does all types of spraying throughout Wairau and Awatere valleys, admits he was at first sceptical of ECTOL. But at the beginning of last year’s growing season (October/ November 2012) a client specifically requested the use of ECTOL on his vineyard, so Mr MacKay sourced and supplied the first 60 litres. “This was duly included in the early fungicide sprays applied at the rate of six litres per hectare,
with the first application going on in mid-October and the second about 10 days later,” he explains. “Sometime after the second spray round, various locations in both valleys suffered a substantial frost. “Our subsequent inspection of the vineyards in the area found that indeed the only vineyard that had had ECTOL applied by us was completely untouched
by the frost, with neighbouring vineyards suffering considerable damage. “Intriguingly, one neighbour had serious frost damage and the worst damaged of these rows were the rows next door to our client’s vineyard. “In fact, there was only about five metres separating the two rows of grapes and there were no trees or fences between the two vineyards. “We also found that frost damage had been caused to vineyards on another two boundaries (both east and west). “There is definitely no doubt in my mind that the application of ECTOL to this particular vineyard saved it from frost damage – there is no other explanation. “We are now using this product on our own vineyards and we have recommended to all of our clients that they do the same.”

While their role remains one of making new migrants welcome, Mr Stuart says their all-volunteer group is also working on advocacy of migrant rights. The handing over of responsibility for advice and administration of migrant applications to external consultants has led to what he describes as a “disgraceful” state of affairs – and Marlborough, he says, is not being spared. The group is currently acting for one university-educated professional who applied for, and won, a job in aquaculture. “He applied for residency and that was granted, but with a condition – that his wife was able to meet English proficiency requirements.” The case was, however, transferred from Christchurch to London, and Stuart says the condition was, altered. “They were insisting his wife, a mother of four, go to another centre to study English. “The family is being dunned over £2000 for English tuition. “And that’s even though he was recruited from overseas for his skills. He’s got a job.” A former senior lecturer in political studies at the University of Otago, Stuart has edited what has become a standard text on immigration issues

Running for one kilometre, cycling for three and then running for another kilometre might sound gruelling, but that didn’t stop hundreds of youngsters from participating in the Marlborough Kids’ Duathlon at Fairhall on Sunday. Committee member Jenny Maclean said close to 400 young people competed in the event, held at Brancott Vineyard, although

Taekwondo Championships Blenheim Olympic Taekwondo Club will host the Top of the South Taekwondo Championships tomorrow. The event will be held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 from 8am. Members of the public are welcome to head along and show their support. Cost is $5 per adult and $2 for under 18s.
The Pak’n Save Marlborough Marathon will be held this Sunday. The start and finish line will be at Villa Maria Estate on New Renwick Road, and runners will compete in full marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km events. There is also a Kids’ Mini Marathon. Each participant who completes the full or half marathon events will be awarded a bottle of wine.

Lifeguard patrols begin next month The Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club is to begin patrolling Rarangi Beach on November 16 chairman Neil Watts said yesterday. The volunteer lifeguards will be out from then until Easter.

Skaters to compete in national tournament Derby Royale, the national roller derby tournament, begins this Saturday in Palmerston North. Sixteen teams from all over New Zealand will converge at the Arena Manawatu for the two-day tournament with the hope of returning home as number one in the country. Three local Boomtown Brawlette skaters Jenner ‘Krowbar’ Halcrow, Renee ‘Hand Renade’ Edwards and Claire ‘Sinister Red’ Giles will be playing alongside former Brawlette Nikita ‘Wanda Bash’ Woodford, now of Hawkes Bay Roller Derby (HBRD). “Excited, nervous. Mainly nervous” says Jenner of the tournament. “We’ve been placed in pool play with Richter City [Wellington] and Dunedin, which are both top teams in New Zealand.” Day one of the tournament is qualifying day. Four pools, each with four teams will compete for entry into either the Top 8 Cup or the bottom 8 Plate tournament.
Renee ‘Hand Renade’ Edwards is also feeling the nerves. “I would never have imagined that I would play against skaters like Tuff Bikkies and Meat Train. “If someone had told me I would be playing in the tournament a year ago, I would have laughed in their face.” Matt ‘Mow Down’ Brown, who is attending the tournament as a referee, is confident of the Brawlettes’ abilities. “Krowie, Renee and Red are our most experienced skaters. I have no doubt that they will meet the challenge. “It’s going to be a great experience. “We’re going to learn a lot, which will be great for roller derby in Blenheim too, hopefully.” Check out the Brawlettes on facebook for information about the team and to be kept updated on their progress at the national tournament.
