1080 dropped on public track

By Kristy Martin A tramping couple has made a formal complaint to the Minister of Conservation after poisonous 1080 pellets were dropped near them in the Marlborough Sounds over the weekend.

The incident is being investigated by the Department of Conservation and the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service.

Kaiuma Bay residents Simon and Carol Caley were tramping on the Nydia Track in Pelorus Sound when they heard items “raining down through the trees” from a nearby helicopter and then spotted green pellets on the ground less than a foot away. “(Carol) smelt a strong smell of cinnamon and felt dust in her mouth and on her face and neck,” Mr Caley said.

Sloan learns from ‘mentor’

By Kristy Martin New deputy mayor Terry Sloan says he is keen to learn all he can from “mentor” Alistair Sowman, but won’t confirm whether he plans to make a play for mayoralty in the next election.

Speaking to the Sun after being named deputy at last Thursday’s Marlborough District Council meeting, Cr Sloan said he was excited to work with the new team of councillors.

He named the Blenheim CBD revitalisation among his top priorities and became tearful when he spoke about how proud his late mother would have been to see him presented with the deputy mayor’s medallion.

The 10-year owner of the Criterion

Hotel in Blenheim is also chairman of the Assets and Services Committee, which will be his main focus.

This appointment sees him responsible for all infrastructure including roads, sewerage, water, waste management, civil defence and emergency services.

Being deputy mayor was about “supporting (mayor) Alistair and offering my support when things get tough – and they do get tough”.

“We’ve known each other for a while.

“He says we’re cut from the same cloth,” Cr Sloan says of his close relationship with the mayor.

feelings with Jenny Andrews, who has served four terms – three under Mr Sowman and one under Gerald Hope – as deputy mayor and remains a councillor.

“Jenny has been very supportive of me and I’ll be looking to Jen as much as I can (for advice).”

As far as projects go, he is passionate about making the CBD “more vibrant” and believes businesses are too spread out.

“Blenheim is still struggling from the recession and we’ve got to get through that.

“It breaks my heart to see empty shops and I don’t want it to spread to other parts of town.”

He would like to see 2 High Street made into a “sample shop” of all the tourist attractions in the Marlborough region, such as the wineries, museums and Sounds tours.

But when asked if this would be similar to the iSite, he says it would be a more interactive environment.

Cr Sloan is supported by sons Finn, 12, Tom, 11, and Billy, 10, and wife Audrey, who also remains non-committal about whether her husband will be the next Marlborough mayor.

“Three years is a long time away, so we’ll just see what happens then,” she said.

1080 is a poisonous pesticide using sodium fluoroacetate.

DOC uses it to protect native forest and birds from pests such as possums, rats and stoats.

Mr Caley has made a complaint to the Minister of Conservation, Dr Nick Smith, demanding a formal apology for what he sees as the department’s “failure to protect the

public”.

“I think it’s horrendously shocking,” he said.

The Marlborough couple were tramping from Duncan Bay to Nydia Bay on Saturday and had seen a sign warning of a 1080 drop in the area, but when they came across a DOC employee she allegedly told them they would be safe because there was a 100 metre exclusion zone between the drop area and the track.

says any health risks to the couple were likely to be minimal, as 1080 poisoning occurred mainly through ingestion.

“However 1080 is a toxic substance and needs to be used with care, hence the suite of conditions that are applied to protect the public health,” he said.

“We …take breaches of conditions very seriously.”

DOC said it was investigating this and a second incident that occurred during its aerial pest control near

Tennyson Inlet on Saturday, the detachment of a spreader bucket from one of its helicopters.

“These incidents are of concern to us and we take them very seriously,” said DOC Sounds District Manager Roy Grose.

The Environmental Protection Authority and the Marlborough District Council had been notified, he said.

Mr Caley said walking tracks in the area should have been closed, particularly given that it was a long weekend.

Lights over Marlborough is the annual Whitney Street School fireworks display held at Marlborough’s A&P Showgrounds, and is the school’s major fundraiser for the year.

The school is inviting the Marlborough community to join in the fun on Saturday, 16 November from 6pm to enjoy the pre-fireworks festivities followed by the headline fireworks event.

Shops closed due to flood damage

By Kristy Martin Two Blenheim businesses remained closed yesterday due to flood damage suffered on the weekend.

Avalon Jewellers and Flight Centre on Market Street were unable to trade after the Queens Market Mall became flooded on Saturday night, believed to be the result of a burst water pipe.

The Fix Café also suffered considerable water damage, said employee Danii Kilworth.

She had seen the building flooded as she was leaving a nearby nightspot about 1.30am on Sunday and traced it back to Avalon.

“We believe it was a burst water pipe because we could hear the running water,” Danii said.

She called Fix owner Fran Roche who called the police and they sent the fire brigade to investigate.

“There was water everywhere,” Danii said.

“I don’t know when it started but it was filling up quite fast.”

In some areas, the water was ankle deep, she said.

“There was a huge puddle in the middle (of the mall).

“It took us ages to get it cleaned up and dry.”

No breaches in liquor sting Marlborough police said they were pleased to have found no breaches of the law during an operation targeting the sale of alcohol to underage people last week.

Police undertook a controlled purchase operation with the assistance of Public Health and Marlborough District Council Compliance Officers, where they visted 10 premises (on and off licensed) on Thursday night.

Police were pleased that there were no breaches of the Sale of Liquor Act with local licensees complying with the legislation.

International acclaim for saving Edwin Fox

By Glenise Dreaver On October 3 this year, it was the anniversary of the launching of the Edwin Fox 160 years ago.

Its preservation has been a huge project. So it was fitting that last Friday Sir James DunbarNasmith, the great-great nephew of one of its original owners, was there as the Edwin Fox Society was presented with an award from the World Ship Trust.

Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae made the presentation to society president Chris Brown. The preservation project has involved much local support and a huge voluntary effort over many years.

Sir James, the society’s patron and a renowned heritage architect, travelled from Britain for the occasion, despite his eighty six years.

He said the World Heritage Award put the Edwin Fox into very good company, along with such vessels as the Mary Rose and the Great Britain.

When he first saw the vessel five years ago, he said he was amazed by what had been achieved by volunteers “and largely without public finance”.

The alcohol limit for drink driving is set to be reduced from .08 to .05.

Cabinet has approved lowering the blood alcohol limit from 80mg per 100ml of blood to 50mg for drivers over 20.

The legislation to change the law will have its first reading in Parliament before Christmas, Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee said.

Drivers under 20 will still have a zero limit.

Rotary president Murray Brown said their venture was a highly successful one and there were no plans to change anything, includ-

ing the $5 charge for vendors.

They raised $300-$400 on a Saturday plus what they raised for selling their own products such as pieces of carpet and wine barrels.

The money goes into a trust account he said and is used for individuals and organisations in need. For example, donations to youth sports and cultural activities were often made “where young people have put effort in already.”

They had also just given $500 to one school so that two young people could join a school camp that they would otherwise have missed out on he said.

Salmon farming guidelines under review Work on a set of agreed best practice guidelines for salmon farming in the Marlborough Sounds is underway as the District Council and New Zealand King Salmon work together to find a ‘Marlborough solution’ to the issues facing aquaculture.

The results of the 2012 monitoring of eight salmon farms in the Sounds prompted Council to seek further advice - from Professor Kenneth Black of the Scottish Association of Marine Sciences, an internationally recognised authority on aquaculture.

The issue will be considered at the next Council Environment Committee meeting, on Thursday November 28.

This was already the subject of a hearing with a decision awaited.

Professor Black also highlights a number of inconsistencies in resource consent conditions and the potential environmental impact of salmon farming.

“Professor Black’s work makes an important contribution to the bigger issue of clarity of the consenting regime,” Mr Jerram said.

He said the one thing that all parties in the salmon farming debate have in common is an understanding of the need for sustainability.

Spot on.

This eyesore is now flourishing under tremendous regrowth of the very willows Fish & Game sought to eradicate.

I understand it was aerial sprayed to effect the destruction originally.

Will take some 20 years (WWII took six) to return to the natural state envisaged so Fish & Game can get in there to shoot things.

In the meantime Mother Nature is doing what she does best.

She is allowing the strong to survive and regenerate at will.

I ask, via your newspaper, for due pressure to be applied to Fish & Game to step up and take responsibility for this disaster.

It is, after all, the “gateway” to the South Island.

lenheim couple Tracy Taylor and Peter Sutherland had a firm idea of how they wanted their home built, so they were pleased when Peter Ray Homes worked closely with them to deliver what they wanted.

Rowan told Tracy and Peter the build would take approximately five months, and it did!

“Rowan and his team worked day,night and even weekends to have our home built on time. Everyone who was involved was clearly dedicated to their craft,” Peter said.

“People ask us what would we change... to which we reply - nothing!

“The trust for Rowan and Peter Ray Homes was there from the start and the whole experience was stressfree and fun,” Tracy said.

one on one with the Sun

Time for a change Peter Hyde of Blenheim’s Challenge Service Station last week “semi-retired”. Here he talks to Glenise Dreaver.

After 19 years at what is now the Challenge Service Station in Queen Street, 17 of them as owner-operator, Peter Hyde retired last Thursday.

His face is, however, likely to be seen around the business once he’s had a break.

“It’s not really retirement. More time for a change.”

A working week of six and a half to seven days a week takes its toll. Pete’s wife Jacquie had died very unexpectedly in 2002, and along with the grief he says it was hard running the business on his own. He’s philosophical though. “That’s life. And I have had a lot of terrific staff working here. They look after me and I look after them.”

It has also been a place where youngsters from the family worked while still at school. “My son, my daughter, my grandson, my nieces and nephews. It heads them in the right direction in life.”

He’s glad the business is going into the good hands of Phillip Sweet of Blenheim. “A Pom, but he’s a really nice guy.”

Picton-born, Pete did his mechanic’s apprenticeship at Terry Motors (now Wadsco). There he worked at Springlands service station for 13 years, as well as spending some time in forestry.

But the service station business is his first love. Pete says they have a lot of loyal long-term customers. “You’re in contact with a lot of wonderful people.”

Their business is, says Pete, unique.

“I don’t know how many stations there are in the middle of other towns.

Not many.

“A lot of small ones go down. It’s like big supermarkets taking over from small shops and it’s sad.”

One reason for success had to be

the quirky decor, his sense of humour evident everywhere. “Kids loved it here.” Sadly, the strings of fluffy toys around the wall have had to go. (Pete reluctantly admits he won the toys in machines.)

Mascot was still at the door last Thursday though, large and fluffy with accessories like a wig, a hat, and a nose, all picked up from the road.

There was also a superb scale model of an old sailing ship, crafted by Jacquie’s father Murray Menzies.

The Hispaniola, it features in Robert Louis Stevenson’s book Treasure Island. “That took Murray five years to make.”

There were scenic paintings on the wall by his brother-in-law Dennis Menzies and photographs of early Blenheim.

Items of interest were kept tucked away behind the counter. “I do collect things,” Pete admits.

“I’m not a total junk collector though.”

Another interest is gardening and he has his new crop of giant pumpkins in. “They’re growing well”. Last year, his “Guess the weight of the giant pumpkin” competition created intense interest and Pete finally donated the giant vegetables to charity, where they made many gallons of pumpkin soup.

In his last weeks at the station he was giving away seeds for others to try their luck.

Along with gardening and some work around the house, he is now looking forward to a new era in his life and spending more time with his new partner Linda Harvey.

Sheer power on show at Regatta Story by Celeste Lodewyk Lovers of horsepower and sheer speed will be leaping out of their seats with excitement as grand prix hydroplanes and formula one powerboats compete at the Nelson Lakes Regatta at Lake Rotoiti on November 9 and 10.

The two day event has been organised

by Lake Rotoiti Power Boat Club in association with Acceleration on Water Event Management Ltd and will feature some of the country’s top race names, including that of two-time world hydroplane powerboat champion Warwick Lupton.

Warwick’s prototype boat Annihilator, built in his farm shed in Waverley is currently on its way to Picton where it will undergo some modifications with local boat builder Malcolm Jamieson.

“We’re still working hard on the boat and the modifications are to see if we can improve it, it’s getting quicker and quicker

over time,” he said.

The Annihilator was built by Malcolm and Warwick’s father and boasts of having 2000 horsepower and can reach speeds around 160 mile and hour. To date it has had 6000 hours spent on it and according to Warwick is “one of a kind”.

“There’s nothing in the world built like this before.

“This Regatta is a good wind up to the start of the season and there will be a few good boats putting on a show,” Warwick said.

Malcolm’s son Ken Lupton will also be featuring at the Regatta with his grand prix hydroplane ‘Cheetah’.

His top spec 2500hp boat is currently on route to Nelson and its mechanic Brett Nidree of BNR Engines is flying in from Melbourne.

There will be plenty of racing action over the two days with racing starting at 11am.

Blenheim Toyota Ag Club marks 70th anniversary ToyoTa Deal of The week

By Kristy Martin Cute calves, fluffy rabbits and cheeky goats were all part of the Marlborough Boys and Girls Agricultural Club’s annual pet day last week.

The event, held at Wairau Valley School, had 120 animal entries from nine schools across the region.

“It gives kids a chance to learn about raising animals and the art of it,” said Joanna Grigg, secretary of the Agricultural Club.

“Some children are good at sports, others are good at science, this gives the ones that are great with animals a chance to show people what they’ve got.”

Elizabeth McGruddy, 5, from Tua Marina School was thrilled to win first prize in the ‘Best fur and fibre’ category for her pet rabbit, Fluffy.

An impressive cake marked the 70th anniversary of the Agricultural Club and its annual pet day.

Raising awareness of Parkinson’s Disease

By Kristy Martin Having two parents with Parkinson’s Disease makes Jane Heywood worry she is destined to follow the same path.

Although the degenerative neurological condition is not known as hereditary, there is still a chance the Blenheim woman could develop it.

And this scares her, given that she has watched both parents battle with Parkinson’s and its symptoms, including shaking, tremors, dizziness, balance issues and panic attacks.

“Parkinson’s can come on as early onset or later, as people get older,” Jane explains.

“Everybody has slightly different symptoms.

“For instance, my father doesn’t shake and my mother does.”

Jane’s father Colin developed Parkinson’s about 16 years ago and is now wheelchair-bound.

Her mother Lois was diagnosed about nine years later.

They now both live in a rest home.

“When mum told me she had it too, I was absolutely astonished,” Jane said.

“One of the things is they lose balance very easily.

“She’s had a few falls.

“It’s such a mission to do anything with them, to go anywhere.

“Dad can hardly get in and out of the car.”

More than 225,000 New Zealanders have been diagnosed with diabetes and many more have it without knowing.

Diabetes is a chronic condition which arises when the pancreas does not make enough insulin, or the body cannot effectively use the insulin produced.

When there is not enough insulin, or the insulin does not work properly, too much glucose (a form of sugar) stays in the blood.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas.

Insulin enables the muscles and other tissues to take up and use glucose from the blood.

Most of the food we eat is changed into glucose and passes into the blood.

This sugar provides energy for the body to live and grow.

Everyone has some glucose in their blood all the time. The healthy blood glucose range is 4-8mmol/L. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 - requires insulin for survival due to lack of insulin produced by the body.

Type 2 - insulin is still produced but is unable to be used effectively.

With Type 2 diabetes the onset may be gradual and there may not be any symptoms. It is possible to have this type of diabetes for many years before it is diagnosed.

Diabetes is treated by the daily balancing of diet, exercise and in some cases medication (either tablets or insulin injections). There are ‘no’ days off!

The danger of untreated or out of control diabetes is that it can lead to complications such as blindness, amputations, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and loss of sexual function.

Diabetes cannot presently be cured, but it can be controlled and you can lead a full and active life.

From November 12-14 there will be finger prick testing for diabetes at The Warehouse Blenheim store from 10am - 2pm. People whose readings are high will be given a form to take to their doctor for further investigation.

This testing is part of Diabetes Marlborough’s health promotion during Diabetes Awareness Week (November 12-18).

Each Committee comprises a mix of Board members and community members. The members of the committees are appointed by the Board.

Community members participate as full members of the committees, taking an active role in advising the Board on the planning and development of health and disability support services in the region.

The Advisory Committees give recommendations to the Board which makes the decisions about how to fund and provide services to meet the needs of the people in the region. The emphasis will be on improving the health status of the region’s population.

The time commitment required includes: Committee meetings currently two monthly for 3 hours in either Nelson or Blenheim; preparation and travelling time; occasional workshops and community meetings. Members receive remuneration for each formal meeting attended.

Applications Invited The term of the current community representatives expires on 31 December 2013 and so the Board is calling for applications from people interested in taking on this role for the next three years.

We noted in our last article - and forgive us for shouting - that while they make up only 3.5% of all vehicles, MOTORCYCLES ARE INVOLVED IN OVER 20% OF ALL SERIOUS CRASHES! We obviously have a problem here, and it’s not just this shocking statistic; another very real problem is the apparent indifference of both riders and drivers to this fact. Many motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle so the issue concerns everyone who uses the roads. While there isn’t much in the way of motorcycle-awareness training for drivers, we ask and will continue to ask drivers to please be aware of motorcycles.

Look once, look twice, and please - look for bikes.

For riders it’s a different story, and we should know that something’s not right.

We already know that as vulnerable road users, several key inequality factors affect motorcyclists. Riding a motorcycle is a higher risk situation because of the smaller vehicle mass, lack of structural protection, and relatively small presence in the traffic mix. Because these factors apply to a small proportion of road users, the needs

of motorcyclists tend to not be addressed to the same degree as other vehicles. We also know that bike registrations now carry a whopping ACC levy. This is not the whim of a cash-grabbing bureaucrat – it is simple economics; motorcyclists per capita cost a lot more money to fix than drivers.

So what’s the answer, or more importantly – why are so few asking the question? Because there really is no shortage of qualified motorcycle training, but it’s a disturbing fact that many training facilitators have difficulty filling their course quotas. Good training goes for naught unless riders are aware of the need and are willing to front up about their own riding skills. And while some riders may have been through an early one-off course to get their licence, studies have shown that effective training is an on-going process.

Because safe motorcycle riding is dependent on realistic attitudes toward risk-taking and mental alertness, frequent reinforcement of safety-oriented attitudes is essential. A motorcyclist’s exposure to multiple learning experiences about safe

riding techniques will affect a change in attitude and subsequently, their behaviour.

If a motorcyclist takes part in a variety of learning experiences over time, the likelihood of their mastering the various cognitive and motor skills necessary for accident prevention will increase. Renewal training also periodically reminds riders of relevant and evolving safety issues, further increasing their level of safety awareness and risk assessment.

Safer motorcycling is all about awareness. Being aware of the road conditions, the weather, and the other vehicles on the road. As equally important, riders must also be aware of their own abilities and limitations. Motorcyclists have fewer and tighter margins to operate within safely.

Where cars skid, bikes will crash; while drivers have seatbelts and airbags, bikers get cold steel and hard pavement. That question we talked about earlier? Ask it yourself; take that course and keep the shiny side up.

Garden Marlborough Nelmac Garden Marlborough’s annual garden event has begun, attracting gardeners nationwide.

It includes full-day and half-day garden tours and workshops from New Zealand and international gardening experts.

The festival concludes on Sunday with the Stihl Shop Garden Fête in Seymour Square.

There will be over 200 stall holders and entertainment as well.

MacDonald gets the call up

By Adam Poulopoulos The Friday Sun reported last week Tasman Makos stalwart Quentin MacDonald was looking forward to a summer back home in Blenheim.

Now, those plans will have to wait a little longer.

After initially missing out on selection, the hooker was called into the New Zealand Maori All Blacks squad as injury cover for the second and final match of their North American tour.

MacDonald and Hurricanes halfback Chris Smylie were due to join up with the squad in Philadelphia yesterday ahead of their clash with the USA on Sunday afternoon.

liot, who returned home after suffering a neck injury in the Maori All Blacks’ 40-15 win over Canada in Toronto last weekend.

He will compete with former All Black hooker Corey Flynn for a starting berth and joins Tasman team-mates Shane Christie, Liam

MacDonald is familiar with the environment, having played in all three games during the team’s tour to England and Canada a year ago.

If he gets onto the field, he will be helping his team-mates defend a streak that has seen them go unbeaten against international teams for more than a decade.

New Zealand Rugby hopes this tour can build on the success of last year, as they look to spread the All Black brand and interact with fans.

Tours like this also help strengthen tier two rugby nations ahead of the 2015 World Cup in England.

Shem Banbury to speak at classic

By Adam Poulopoulos Athletes from around the country will get a chance to be a part of the Queen Charlotte Classic’s stellar 20th birthday celebration.

The 60 kilometre multisport race will be held on Saturday with a separate half marathon run at the same time.

Athletes from as far north as Auckland and Tauranga are expected to make the trip to Marlborough for the event.

Off the course participants will be in with a chance to win spot prizes, while Blenheim-born endurance athlete Shem Banbury will speak about running in the Sahara Desert at the after-race dinner party.

Classic organiser Peter Yarrell said he was looking forward to the occasion.

“It’s really just a celebration of multisport racing in the Marlborough Sounds.”

The Classic has attracted a number of high-profile endurance athletes from around the country, such as Steve Gurney, Richard Ussher and Andrea Hewitt, who won the race at seventeen before taking up

triathlon.

Mr Yarrell said he wanted the mix of athletes to continue.

“There’s a lot of people who go on to greater heights, but we also get people who are just trying to get healthy.

“We’re there for everyone. We want to reward winners but we have all sorts of spot prizes too.”

For Jane Parrett and Hugh Reynolds, the day will be even more meaningful.

They plan to get married hours after completing the event.

Mr Yarrell said he is delighted to be part of their special day.

“We’re absolutely delighted to be making it such a great day for them.

“Hopefully neither of them break a leg or anything in the morning!”

Over the classic’s two-decade tenure, about $200,000 has been raised for various charities.

This year, proceeds will go to the Marlborough Community Development Trust.
