Ferry luggage theft

Karen Magee is devastated after her luggage was stolen from the Interislander ferry.

By Kristy Martin A Blenheim woman was left devastated after her luggage, including irreplaceable photographs of a deceased family member, was stolen from her vehicle while travelling on the Interislander ferry. Karen Magee was with her grandson Luke, 18, on the Arahura going from Wellington to Picton on Tuesday night when the theft occurred. They lost a large green suitcase and a black duffel bag from the tray of their Hilux ute. Inside the luggage was clothing, jewellery, a PlayStation Portable game console and precious family photographs of Luke’s father, who passed away when he was eight years old. “His father died when he was younger and he had the album in his bag,” a visibly distressed Karen told the Sun. A proposed roundabout at the Boyce Street/SH6 intersection.

A proposed roundabout at the Murphys Road/SH6 intersection.

Two new roundabouts for Springlands By Kristy Martin Roundabouts will be installed at two dangerous Springlands intersections, Boyce Street and Battys Road. The work is due to start in early 2014 and will include an upgrade of the pedestrian and cycle facilities to improve the overall safety of the area. A single lane roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Battys Road and Middle Renwick Road (SH6). The pedestrian crossing at the intersection

is set to be moved east. This will provide greater visibility for crossing users and stop vehicles waiting for pedestrians from blocking the roundabout, said Andrew Adams, project engineer for Marlborough Roads. Another single lane roundabout will be constructed at Boyce Street and Middle Renwick Road. It will include two entry lanes coming from each direction. “The current “free left turn” from Boyce Street onto SH6 will remain in place and

the northern end of Purkiss Street will be closed off to create a cul-de-sac to reduce the number of potential vehicle conflicts at the intersection,” Mr Adams said. Two pedestrian crossings will be built, one outside Countdown supermarket and the other east of Boyce Street, and cycle lanes will be marked on both sides of Middle Renwick Road. Some on-street parking would also need to be removed.

Luggage stolen from Interislander Continued from page 1 “The photos are precious and they mean a lot. “My camera was in my bag with photos of my other grandson’s 21st on it. “Maybe an honest person can hand them in if they realise what they’ve taken.” Ms Magee alerted ferry staff, who she says detained passengers disembarking at Picton and began searching their vehicles.

They did not call the police, but later took her to the terminal turnaround manager who did contact the police. Interislander general manager Thomas Davis said staff were informed that the bags had gone missing from the ute, which was parked on the vehicle deck. “At the time of staff being alerted to this, private vehicles were already being offloaded from the ship,” he said. “The Picton terminal turna-

round manager was notified, they contacted Police and we have passed our CCTV footage on to them.” He could not confirm whether vehicles had been searched. “We have not received reports of cars being searched and that is not standard operating procedure. “However, it is included in our conditions of carriage.” The conditions state that “Interislander reserves the right to

inspect at any time any vehicle, luggage or other property.” They also advise passengers to lock their vehicles and secure loose belongings. Ms Magee has only lived in Blenheim since August. Luke was in the process of moving from Wellington to join her when the theft took place. “It’s pretty disappointing for that to happen,” she said. “It’s not a nice welcome to Blenheim.”

Former patient ‘saddened’ by doctor’s guilty plea By Celeste Lodewyk A former female patient of Blenheim Doctor Ravi Tamma told the Sun she was “saddened” by the news he had been found guilty of professional misconduct and suspended from practising for 18 months. The patient who could not be named for privacy reasons said when she heard “a rumour” about the charges, she phoned Dr Tamma and asked him “out of concern”. “He said it was a huge misunderstanding and was genuinely upset by the whole thing. I never once considered changing doctors and believe he was a good doctor and I trusted him with me and my children one hundred per cent,” she said. The New Zealand Health Prac-

titioners Disciplinary Tribunal published a report on the hearing stating Dr Tamma who was practicing at Lister Court Medical Centre inappropriately examined a female Korean patient in 2011 and falsified the consultation notes in order to justify the examination. The patient went to the medical centre complaining of symtoms suggestive of a urinary tract infection. She was prescribed antibiotics and left, but returned three weeks later with recurring symptoms. She was accompanied by her partner (now husband) who remained in the waiting room while she was seen by Dr Tamma. During the consultation Dr Tamma asked the woman to remove articles of clothing while

he examined her abdomen. He also asked her to remove her pants but did not leave the room or provide her with a sheet or blanket to cover herself. He carried out a genital examination, which he stated was for checking for a sexually transmitted infection. Dr Tamma then asked the patient to take off her upper clothing leaving her naked with no covering. The patient queried the examination asking if he could see anything by examining her that way, to which he responded; “Are you a nurse?” Once the consultation was completed the patient received a prescription to treat a kidney infection and left. Later that day the patient phoned

Dr Tamma to express concern about the consultation and she recorded 15 minutes of the conversation without his knowledge. On May 15 of this year charges were laid against Dr Tamma and as of October 1 he was suspended from practice. During the hearing process Dr Tamma expressed remorse for his actions and apologised to the patient. He was given credit for his guilty plea and co-operation at the hearing. The report states he and his family had suffered extreme stress and anxiety, and had suffered humiliation. Dr Tamma and his family have since returned to India, though he hoped to return to general practice preferably in New Zealand.

DOC apologises for 1080 breach By Kristy Martin The Department of Conservation has apologised for dropping 1080 pellets on a public walking track in the Marlborough Sounds. Roy Grose, DOC’s conservation services manager for the Sounds, said the department accepted that pellets were found within the exclusion zone around Nydia Track in Perlorus Sound and apologised for the breach. “There’s no doubt that we breached the 20-metre exclusion zone and for that we apologise,” Mr Grose said. Simon and Coral Caley said they were almost hit with poisonous 1080 pellets while tramping on the Nydia Track in Pelorus Sound on Saturday, and that Mrs Caley was dusted on her face, neck and in her mouth. Mr Grose said DOC workers had done

A 1080 drop in action.

three sweeps of the track over the weekend and found about 20 pellets within what was

meant to be a “safe buffer” zone. “It’s not as if the whole track was sprayed with pellets,” he said. The department was investigating how this came to be and whether the pellets blew on to the track by a strong wind. In a separate incident that same day, a large bucket of pellets detached from a helicopter during the aerial drop. Mr Grose said it fell through the canopy within the operational area, about 1-2km from the track. Ground staff had gone to the site to retrieve the spilled pellets before the bucket was retrieved by a helicopter. DOC had been “trying to avoid” the drop on Marlborough Anniversary weekend, Mr Grose said, but a number of factors, including weather conditions and resources, led to the decision.

Aratere out of service A spokesperson for Maritime New Zealand says the Transport Accident Investigation Commission is conducting an inquiry into why the Aratere passenger ferry lost a propeller in Cook Strait on Tuesday. He said Maritime New Zealand would not let the vessel sail again until they were satisfied it was seaworthy. A spokesperson for Kiwirail said yesterday the course of events was being investigated but it had originally been reported that a shaft snapped at 8pm during the 6.30pm sailing to Wellington and the starboard propeller was lost. Aratere continued to Wellington on its port propeller.

Armistice Day in Seymour Square A memorial service will be held at the Blenheim War Memorial clock tower at 11am on Monday November 11 to mark Armistice Day. This 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is the symbolic moment chosen to remember the cease to hostilities on the Western Front in 1918. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman and RNZAF Squadron Leader Sarah Woodhouse will each give short addresses.

Low debt for council The Marlborough District Council is in a strong financial position with debt levels which are low compared with other local bodies, councillors were told as they met to adopt the Council’s 2012-13 Annual Report. The Council’s net debt at 30 June 2013 was $10.1M. With assets of $1.34 billion and liabilities of just over $40 million, the Council has a very healthy balance sheet, said Council Manager of Corporate Finance Martin Fletcher.

Local couple Matt and Lynne Broughan have just taken over the Renwick-based business Water Accessories, after purchasing the established business from retiring owners Neil and Jill Gee. The Broughans own Liquid Action, a company they established in 2011 after identifying a gap in the local market. Liquid Action offers irrigation and water meter solutions within Marlborough and Nelson, and the purchase of Water Accessories is a natural extension of the current business. The opportunity to have a shop frontage in a key location has motivated the purchase, although the opportunity presented itself sooner than the couple had planned. “While it wasn’t within the timeframe that we had set for ourselves, the opportunity came up and it felt right,” says Matt. Established in 2001, Water Accessories Ltd is located on High Street in Renwick. The business will be re-branded Liquid Action Renwick, and customers can continue to expect the same high level of service and product range, promises Matt.

Matt and Lynne Broughan have bought and re-branded Water Accessories in Renwick. The business is now called Liquid Action. Photo and story supplied.

While Liquid Action will continue to be based at their current Tua Marina location, the new Renwick location will operate as a second Liquid Action branch. Clients based in the Renwick and South-

ern Valleys area will now have a choice of location to do business with Liquid Action. Matt and Lynne said they wished Neil and Jill all the best for a relaxing and much deserved retirement.

Health care staff stay on long-term Management at Redwood Lifestyle Care and Village in Blenheim is accustomed to having staff members stay on long-term. In the team of 40, six have worked there for more than 15 years and 10 have worked there for more than five years. This is quite an achievement, particularly in today’s world where it is not so common for people to stick with one employer for such an extended period of time. Clinical manager Brian Ross believes it is a combination of selecting the right people to work as health care assistants and nurses at the Cleghorn Street facility, along with the benefits those roles provide the employees. “There’s a lot of positives in this industry,” Mr Ross said. “The work is interesting and staff are constantly training and retraining to keep up-to-date.” He said those who had worked at the facility since 1998 or earlier had seen many changes in the care industry, including that residents were living longer and their needs became more complex. Also, the staff had developed strong bonds. “Friendships have developed and we have evening (social) sessions. “Everyone who works here is a valued member of our community.”

parking meter 'maids" or should I say vultures. Last week a friend parked his car and came round to talk to me as a grey haired, bespectacled male meter "maid" came abreast as my friend got out of his car and began a conversation. The meter vulture swooped and stood by us writing down details. We wondered was he already writing out

out the parking meter surveillance. Obviously driven by revenue and commission the contractors and "maids" will be ruthless in their quest for fines. The whole CBD suffers. In fact council needs to look at the whole "free market" madness of contracting services out. No wonder the council is in debt. Neil Nissan

Fond memories of Picton Dear Ed, I made it home two weeks ago for a family wedding after three years. Great to catch up with family and friends. The Mrs and I continued on to Picton and two lovely nights at the Beachcomber Hotel. A great trip to Bay of Many Coves for brekky. Cougar Lines did a great job. We spent a bit of time on the Picton

Foreshore, which had changed a lot since I was a youngster. Whatever the draft plan finishes up being, please keep the lovely grassy areas wherever possible I have such great memories of our visits to Picton and Waikawa as children. Kerry Jacques Tugun QLD (Abridged - Ed.)

Waste of police manpower Dear Ed, The Labour Day traffic blitz, reported in your paper, made for interesting reading. Whilst it gave a good breakdown of tickets issued it never actually stated how many drivers were stopped. One must imagine 1000’s, probably 10,000 plus, to get a 10 per cent return on time invested. And it is here that we could clearly see that only four drivers were caught for drunk driving, meaning a measly return of just .004! While it can be argued that even catching one drunk motorist is a good result it nevertheless has to be

tempered with the possible misuse of such a vital resource, not to mention the inconvenience to the motoring public going about their lawful business. I too was stopped at around midday just out of Blenheim, and breath tested. Being a non drinker doesn’t matter of course, but no obvious check was made to see if my licence or WOF, were up-to-date, just the breath test. Maybe it is time to take a closer look at how we go about utilising such a valuable resource. Concerned motorist. (Abridged. Ed.)

Many thanks Dear Ed, Thanks to the lady and man on Halloween morning who helped my daughter Jessica when she fell off her bike outside the Salvation Army

buildings on Henry St. It was most kind of you to stop and help her off the road. Jessica thanks you very much. Sue Sturm

School’s out for seniors By Kristy Martin Bit tersweet was how Marlborough Girls’ College head girl Georgie Crawford described her final day of school, which was marked with a balloon release in Market Place in Blenheim on Wednesday. Year 13 students from both the girls’ and boys’ colleges gathered to say farewell to school and for many it also signalled goodbye to Marlborough. “We wanted a celebration where the girls could share it with the boys,” said Georgie, who is off

to study law at Otago University. The girls sang a traditional college song and the boys performed a haka after yellow and blue balloons were released into the sky. “It signified letting go and moving on,” said Georgie. “It’s a bittersweet feeling.” Boys’ College head boy Atunaisa Moli, who will head to Hamilton to complete a psychology degree, agreed. He said it was sad to say farewell. “It’s been a good year.” “One to remember,” added The Marlborough girls’ and boys’ colleges held a joint celebration in Marlborough Girls’ College head girl Georgie. the Forum on Wednesday to mark the last day of school. Ralph Ballinger honoured for work with trees At Labour Weekend, Ralph Ballinger of Blenheim was honoured by the New Zealand Arboricultural Association, being awarded the 2013 Ron Flook award for 2013. As he was temporarily unable to travel, his daughter Helen, herself a landscape architect, travelled to Queenstown to accept it. Ralph, who has had multiple national honours and awards for his lifetime’s work in horticulture, celebrated his 98th birthday this week. He was a key mover in setting up the association. Ron Flook, “a good friend”, had set up the national Register of Notable Trees of New Zealand at a time when Ralph had been the

president of the national institute of horticulture which supported the move. He added that a group of three of them had identified 100 notable trees in Marlborough. “That’s a very high number.” Titoki at Tua Marina was one he had registered he said. His favourite tree is the gingko. “That was the first tree I planted at Budge Street when we came to Blenheim.” When the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology was developed on what had been the Ballinger’s land, he was consulted. “The original plan was to build over where the gingko was planted. I asked that it be kept so they altered the plans and it now sits in the middle of the courtyard.”

Diabetes Awareness Week

12th - 18th Nov

Support is key for diabetes The theme for this year’s Diabetes Awareness week is ‘Support’, and supporting the Marlborough community are Chris Robb and Raelene Gilchrist of Diabetes Marlborough. In Marlborough 2145 people with diabetes are registered with their doctors, a number which represents a wide range of ages. “There could be a number of people who haven’t been tested or registered so we are urging people, particularly if they have a family history or are over 40, to be tested,” Chris said. Diabetes is the “stepping stone” to more serious complications so to help prevent and educate the community about this serious disease, Diabetes Marlborough has a range of services to offer. These include education courses for those diagnosed with diabetes, resources on all forms of the disease as well as information on the many local health services available

to help. “We want to get the word out that people who are at risk need to be tested before complications arise. “There are also people who have a hard time accepting their diagnosis, so we are here to listen, advise and support anyone needing to talk. “Diabetes is something you can live with, not be scared of. With good self management and support from the right channels, you can carry on without letting diabetes take over,” Chris said. Thanks to a grant from Pub Charity, Diabetes Marlborough has extended its hours from Monday through to Friday, 9am - 3pm. There is also a coffee morning once a month for members to talk to like-minded people. For more information about any of the services offered by Diabetes Marlborough, simply call in or phone them.

Spring Creek Four Square supermarket owners Allan and Adrian Withers have sold their business after 27 years.

Supermarket owners humbled by response By Kristy Martin Four Square supermarket owners Allan and Adrian Withers say they have felt like celebrities these past weeks, after the Sun reported on the sale of their Spring Creek business. Allan and Adrian will at the end of the year move on from the store, which they have owned for the past 27 years, after it was sold to a couple from the North Island. Mr Withers (senior) said he was surprised by the response the story generated – and not only in the local community. “We’ve had phone calls from people around New Zealand and

past customers have been in contact since they found out,” he said. “Everybody has mentioned it.” The father and son have also had people stopping them in the street, to talk about the sale of the iconic supermarket, located on State Highway One, plus multitudes of customers stopping in to wish them well in their future endeavours. “It has been very humbling, and quite emotional,” said 72-year-old Mr Withers. The new owners will take over the supermarket on November 25, but the Withers men will stay on until Christmas to ensure the transition goes smoothly.

By Kristy Martin It may have been 50 years since they were teenagers, but the Marlborough Boys’ College class of 1963 still knows how to party. The college celebrated its 50th jubilee at the weekend with about 80 guests, many from Marlborough, others from around New Zealand and a few from Australia. “We had a great weekend and everything went without a hitch,” said organiser Malcolm Adams,

who co-ordinated the event with wife Jill and Dennis and Sandra Robinson. The event took place at the college, with drinks on Friday night, school tours and photographs on Saturday and an informal dinner with 1960s music on Saturday night. “There were a few lies told; a few stories told,” said Malcolm, who was in form III in 1963 when the separate boys’ and girls’ colleges were established in Blenheim.

“There was a bit of waltzing, a bit of rock n’ rolling, a bit of modern dance. “The bodies that were dancing were a bit exhausted on the Sunday morning.” He said some people only came for the class photos and tours of the old college buildings by student representatives. “The students really enjoy the school, and they conveyed that well.”

Celebration at St Marks St Marks Addiction Residential Treatment Centre in Main Street officially opened its upgraded kitchen and dining hall on Tuesday. Supporters of St Marks were invited to join residents and staff at a lunch to mark the occasion. It followed a powhiri and small ceremony. Trust Board chairman John Buzan said they were fortunate to have been able to amalgamate stages two and three of their planned redevelopment, as they had incorporated the laundry at a significantly

reduced cost. Stage one had involved the purchase of a neighbouring house in Main Street and its conversion into a support house, while fundraising has now started for stage four. That will see a new accommodation block built and upgrading of the present one to create offices. He said the changes reflected the fact that the centre had, for some years, been changing its scope to develop a more therapeutic focus incorporating life skills as part of the recovery process.

Sarah Parkes, riding Tally Ho Maestro at last year’s A&P Show.

A&P Show kicks off The Marlborough A&P Show is on today and tomorrow, featuring fun-filled festivities for the entire family. Today’s programme includes equestrian and agricultural competitions, cooking and butchery demonstrations, live music and the twilight farmers market from 4pm. Tomorrow’s event will be marked by live entertainment on the main stage throughout the day, cake decorating and demos by wellknown chef Chris Fortune. Other attractions throughout the two day show include an animal nursery, climbing wall, face painting and carnival rides. The show is held at the A&P Park in Blenheim and gate tickets can be purchased for $15 per adult, $30 for families and $5 for students. Children under five enter for free.

Employment rate rises Employment growth continues in the labour market, while wages remain subdued, Statistics New Zealand. The employment rate rose to 64.4 per cent and the unemployment rate fell to 6.2 per cent. Over the September 2013 year, the number of people employed rose 2.4 per cent in the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS). Demand for workers from established businesses rose 1.9 per cent in the Quarterly Employment Survey (QES). “We saw continued improvement in labour market conditions over the quarter as employment rose and unemployment fell,” industry and labour statistics manager Diane Ramsay said. “However, annual wage inflation remains restrained.” Annual wage inflation, as measured by the labour cost index (LCI) salary and ordinary time wage rates, eased to 1.6 per cent in the September 2013 quarter, down from 1.9 per cent this time last year. “Subdued wage inflation follows a period of higher unemployment during 2012 and coincides with low consumer price inflation,” Ms Ramsay said. Average ordinary time hourly earnings, as measured by the QES, edged up 2.6 per cent over the year – up from 2.1 per cent in the previous quarter. This increase was influenced by fewer part-time jobs.

In loving memory of Drew who passed away 8 years ago on November 7. They say Drew, that time will heal, But neither time nor reason will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache that lies behind our smiles, And no one knows how often we have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something Drew, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think about, And so hard to live without. Memories of you are our greatest treasure, To have and cherish close to our hearts. We will always love you and remember you, Today, tomorrow, our whole lives through. -Ryan, Lyn, Maurice and Brenda.

Land prices stymie relocation of Golfers’ world Jo Higgins, who with partner Michael Fairhall ran the popular Golfers’ World attraction at Riverlands, says plans to move to another site have been abandoned. “We couldn’t find suitable land near Blenheim. It was just far too expensive,” she said. “We looked at two sites that were too far out and one that was closer but it was way beyond our means.” They had a nine hole golf course, mini-golf and a moto x track on the leased site, which was sold to a company who planned a vineyard. The whole complex had provided a facility that would be missed, especially at this time of year she said. “It was a great family destination and popular at school holidays. People enjoyed coming for Christmas ‘do’s, stag dos, things like that.” However, they had sold their mini golf set up to Chris Wagner at the Riverlands Roadhouse truck stop and he was keen to get it up and running to make the roadhouse more of a destination for families she said.

From the Sahara to Queen Charlotte By Adam Poulopoulos The Blenheim climate may be far removed from the arid African temperatures, but for one multisport athlete, the two are about to collide. Shem Banbury, born in Blenheim but now living in Tauranga, is returning to take part in the Queen Charlotte Classic on Saturday while also filling the role of after-dinner guest speaker Mr Banbury’s speech will centre around his experience running the Marathon Des Sables, a 254 kilometre endurance race set over six days in the Sahara Desert. The Discovery Channel ranks it as ‘the toughest footrace on earth’ and in the twenty-eight years it has been held, three competitors have died with many others collapsing during the race. Mr Banbury said the organisers push competitors to their limits. “When you sign up you have to say where you want your body sent when you die. “I’ve never run another race that does

that.” The race was created after French concert promoter Patrick Bauer set out on a 320 kilometre walk through the desert with everything he needed on his back. “He was so moved by the opportunity he though everyone should have the chance,” Mr Banbury said. Mr Banbury said fluctuating temperatures were a problem when he finished the race five years ago. “That’s the worst bit. The temperature during the day was in the late 30s. “At night the temperature would drop to zero, and we were only carrying lightweight sleeping bags.” Now a year 7 teacher at Tauranga’s Aquinas College, he said he was looking forward to returning to Blenheim and sharing his experiences. The Queen Charlotte Classic is a multisport event incorporating running, cycling and kayaking. A concurrent half-marathon is also held.

Blenheim locals feature at history-making Highlands 101 Story and photo supplied Two Blenheim-based teams are gearing up to compete at the first-ever race meeting at Cromwell’s Highlands Motorsport Park over the weekend. New Zealand’s newest motor racing facility is hosting the ‘Highlands 101’. Running alongside the international competitors in the Australian GT supercar series and the world debut of the new one-make Toyota Finance 86 Championship, the final of the South Island Endurance Series has attracted drivers from all over the South Island and a few from up north. Blenheim locals Patrick Heagney and John Wadsworth will both contest the Asko 3-Hour Endurance Race with the help of their respective co-drivers, Ryan Heagney and Warren Croft. Heagney piloting his Toyota AE86, and Wadsworth in his Holden Commodore, are up against big names like V8 stars Shane Van Gisbergen and John McIntyre in the three hour enduro. The first national and international race meeting at Highlands Motorsport Park uses New Zealand’s longest race circuit at 4.1 kilometres. The Highlands 101 event features a uniquelyformatted race of the same name.

Patrick Heagney from Blenheim will compete in the Asko 3-Hour Endurance Race at Cromwell’s Highlands Motorsport Park this weekend.

In an interesting twist, entries for the Highlands 101 are not yet confirmed, because they’ll be the quickest 42 cars from any field – Australian GT, South Island Endurance Series one or three hour races or the TR86 one-make class. Once the fastest are known from the earlier races, these drivers will have the opportunity to tackle New Zealand’s newest long distance race which features a brand-new, Le Mansstyle running start and 101 fast and gruelling

laps around the Highlands circuit. Highlands Motorsport Park general manager Mike Sentch says interest in the Highlands 101 is growing exponentially as each day passes. “Race fans are coming from all over Australia to see the finale of the increasinglypopular Australian GT series and many more are travelling from most parts of New Zealand to see, first-hand, this history-making weekend of motorsport,” he said.
