Young pilot wins regional flying award

Story and photo by Kristy Martin Marlborough Aero Club pilot Nicholas Smith (pictured) is celebrating a win at the 2013 Flying New Zealand Alpine Area Rally, in which he took first place in the Wigram Cup Instrument Flying. The 24-year-old will now go on to compete in the national championships held at Tauranga in February. Instrument flying, Nicholas explains, is the navigation of an aircraft by the use of instruments only. Goggles are worn so the pilot can’t see outside the aircraft and relies solely on the accuracy of the instruments. But, he insists, it’s not as scary as it sounds. “You get used to it. “Plus you’ve got a safety pilot (flying) with you.” Continued page 2

TWICE WEEKLY

Enjoying the Lights Over Marlborough fireworks spectacular were Amber Watson, 12, Brier Herkt, 12 and Whitney Street School Year 1 student Ben Pottinger, 6.

Record crowds at fireworks Story and photos by Kristy Martin Record crowds turned out to watch the 30th annual Lights Over Marlborough fireworks display at A&P Park on Saturday night. The Whitney Street School fundraiser attracted 6000 people and generated about $30,000 for the school. Warm weather is believed to be responsible for bringing families

out early and keeping them out for the highly-anticipated 17-minute fireworks spectacular. Parents and kids parked themselves on the grass, many bringing picnics and playing games before the fireworks began about 9.10pm. Whitney Street principal Alan Straker said the event was a huge success.

“It was definitely the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” he said. “And one of the best nights weatherwise.” The event was organised by the school’s Parent Support Group and featured bands, food stalls, face painting, glow sticks, bouncy castles and zorb balls. Students performed a kapa haka and

the school’s Jump Jam group also took to the stage between popular bands Dead Parrots and Arm the Reckless. Andrea Craig, board of trustees member, said the PSG had done a wonderful job. The Blenheim Sun newspaper was proud to be a major sponsor of this successful event. More photos on page 18.

Young pilot wins regional flying award Continued from page 1 Nicholas has been a member of the Marlborough Aero Club for the past four years and has completed his private pilot’s licence. The former Marlborough Boys’ College student works part-time at the Nelson Forests Sawmill, but hopes take his commercial pilot test

in the coming months. “I’d like to get a job as an instructor to build my hours up and then get a job at an airline a few years down the track.” While Nicholas enjoys the freedom of being in the air and says being a pilot is his “dream job”, it is only natural that his parents worry about

him and his career choice. “Mum always worries when I go out flying. “She says all the usual mother stuff.” Several other Marlborough Aero Club members also achieved success at the Alpine Regional Rally, held in Kaikoura at the weekend, which pit-

ted them against pilots from Nelson, Motueka, Kaikoura and Canterbury. Karen MacDonald came second in the Newman Cup for circuits and manoeuvres, Graham Murphy took third place in the NZ Herald Challenge Trophy for navigation and Tim Johnson secured third in the Wanganui Trophy for low flying.

Top honours at business awards By Kristy Martin Southern Water Engineering has cleaned up at the 2013 Westpac Marlborough Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards, winning the Supreme Award and taking top honours in three other categories. The Blenheim-based business secured trophies in the Medium/Large Business and Adding Value to Marlborough categories and also won the Innovation Award. Added to this, they came second in the Strategy Marketing and Growth category and third in the Investing in People and Skills Award. Managing director Stephen Leitch said it was a pleasant surprise. In fact, winning the Supreme Award was so unexpected that he had to climb under the table and put his shoes back on before going

Drink-driving limit lowered Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee yesterday introduced legislation to lower the adult drink-driving limits. The Land Transport Amendment Bill 2013 will lower the adult breath alcohol limit from 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath to 250mcg. “This change will make our roads safer, save lives and prevent serious injuries,” Mr Brownlee said. “Alcohol and driving continues to be a major problem in New Zealand, with alcohol-impaired drivers being involved in around 30 per cent of fatal crashes annually.”

up to receive the trophy. “It is nice to be able to show our clients what we have achieved,” he said. The awards ceremony was held at the Marlborough Convention Centre last Friday night, with about 290 people in attendance. Other winners included Johnson’s Barge Service, who came first in the Investing in People and Skills category and won the Environment Award. The Small Business Award went to Gowans Distribution, while joint winners Hortus and Framingham Wines secured Best Workplace. $6.4m upgrade for highway overbridge Marlborough Roads is about to commence a $6.4 million upgrade on State Highway 1 between Blenheim and Seddon - its biggest road project since 2007. Work to build a new rail overbridge and a straighter, safer road at Dashwood Pass will begin this month and should be complete by winter 2015. Highway Manager Frank Porter says that this 2km section of SH1 halfway between Blenheim and Seddon has a number of safety issues the Transport Agency wants to see addressed. “Dashwood Overbridge has been the site of a number of crashes, and the layout of the road on either side of the bridge means that drivers have to slow down considerably to travel safely through the area,” he said.

“The tight curves and difficult approach to the overbridge can cause problems for all vehicles, particularly trucks. “The current overbridge was built in 1932, and while it’s still in good nick, we need a bridge that’s up to current earthquake standards. “It’s also too narrow for such a major road, so a new bridge will make it safer for everyone travelling along this bit of the state highway.” The multi-million dollar construction contract has been awarded to Higgins Contractors Nelson. It’s the biggest roading project in Marlborough since the Awatere Bridge replacement in 2007, and includes building a new seismically resilient bridge, improving the approach to the bridge, and

Nude food trend growing

Supporting the growing trend of ‘nude food’, Riverlands School students Emily Clarke (8), Hana Berry (8) and Tyson Foote with principal Dave Parsons show how they pack their lunch boxes without wrappers and plastic bags. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk

As a parent with a child approaching school years, Celeste Lodewyk looks at the growing trend of ‘nude food’ and talks to Marlborough primary schools about their stance against nonreusable food wrapping. The term ‘nude food’ may sound slightly unusual, but in fact it is an eco-friendly alternative to wrapping children’s lunches with plastic wrap. It is an idea which is growing in popularity throughout the country and overseas and has already made a positive impact on the environment within local schools. Riverlands School is one of several leading the charge by taking away outside rubbish bins and adopting its ‘pack in, pack out’ philosophy. “Five years ago we began by encouraging students to take home any wrappings from their lunch boxes,” principal Dave Parsons said. “It was a big change to the school’s culture, but now many of our students bring their lunch

in compartment type lunch boxes and use reusable containers. “It’s a system which is working really well and we have seen a significant reduction in waste and an increase in awareness of healthy eating and recycling,” he said. St Mary’s and Renwick Schools have also had success from taking away rubbish bins and asking

“We began by encouraging students to take home any wrappings from their lunch boxes” children to take their wrappings home with them. “We haven’t had rubbish bins in the playground for a number of years, our students basically eat their lunch and put their rubbish back into their lunchboxes,” St Mary’s principal Alister Bridgman said. “It’s been part of an ongoing process of encouraging parents and the children to look at what they are bringing to school and

looking at alternatives such as washable containers. According to Renwick School teacher Nic Walker the school and community’s clean green image has been “pushed hard” this year. “A number of our families provide nude food lunches for their children which really has been a by-product of having zero rubbish bins in school grounds, rather than our sole aim. “By taking away the bins it has encouraged families to take responsibility for what they bring to school. This, combined with our healthy eating message is a big part of our health curriculum and has been met with support from parents,” he said. Staff the Sun spoke to from other schools were also very supportive of the nude food idea and said even though they still had rubbish bins provided, they encouraged children to eat healthy and be responsible with their wrappings. The Sun welcomes any feedback on this topic.

Amber representing NZ Girl Guides Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim teenager Amber Dickson (15) is buzzing with excitement after being chosen to represent New Zealand Girl Guiding at an international jamboree in British Columbia next year. Amber will be one of four NZ girl guides attending the seven day ‘camp’ in July which will be held at Enderby, a city in the Okanagan region. Amber first joined the Brownies at age seven then progressed up into the Girl Guides. She is now a Ranger and is working towards her Queens Guide award. The once shy 15 year old Marlborough Girls’ College student said thanks to Girl Guides her confidence had grown. “Going to this jamboree is going to be a great confidence booster. I will be able to try new things which are out of my comfort zone. “I’m looking forward to new experiences and

I hope to bring them back to Marlborough,” she said. In order for Amber to attend the jamboree, she has had to work hard at fundraising to cover costs associated with the trip. With a total of $5000 to work towards, Amber has been joined by her family and friends in a range of fundraising ventures, including the clean up following the recent Marlborough A&P Show, mucking out stables and a series of raffles. Amber’s total is currently sitting at $2200, so she will be running more raffles and has applied for a number of grants. “I really appreciate the donations from local businesses for my raffles, and I also want to thank everyone who has helped with my fundraising,” she said. If anyone would like to help Amber with her fundraising they can email, amber209@ windowslive.com

Hospice Marlborough is working with local rest homes to strengthen the provision of palliative care in the region. Photo supplied.

Rest homes support palliative care Hospice Marlborough is working in collaboration with the DHB-Primary Palliative care providers and Hospice New Zealand to support the provision of palliative care in Marlborough’s rest homes. Jude Del lebeke, Hospice Marlborough chief executive said she was delighted to announce that after visiting nine rest home facilities in the region with Jeanette Collins, palliative care educator, all had agreed to be part of the national HNZ fundamentals education programme. “Jeanette has provided 27 education sessions at nine facilities and what was

most impressive was that there were up to 20 attendees at some homes/ hospitals,” Ms Dellbeke said. “This has strengthened the working relationships and quality of end of life care at all the Marlborough aged care facilities.” Rest homes now phone the hospice for advice 24/7 and the hospice community team visit all their registered patients in the rest homes. Rest homes involved include Aberleigh, Ashwood, Bethseida, Lakewood, Seaview, Springlands, Maxwell, Waterlea and Redwood.

Awatere Playcentre NZ winner There were celebrations all round at Awatere Playcentre when they discovered this week that they had won an award in the national Tui School Garden Challenge. Playcentre secretary Mel Ewart said they had been running second in the People’s Choice section “but on the last day Taumaranui just blew us out of the water with a thousand extra votes.” “We told ourselves we had done very well for a little centre though. We only have a population of 500 out here. And we have an amazing-looking garden.” So when she opened up her e mail on November 18 to discover their prizewinning effort in the donated receipts section she rang the president in great excitement. “She asked ‘Has the place burnt down?’.” It was Mega Mitre 10’s great support that led to the unexpected win she said, with their named boxes allowing

customers to donate receipts for the Marlborough school of their choice. Because the amount was related to school size, they had an advantage. The unexpected victory was all the sweeter as their starter pack of two bags of compost and seeds, and some additional seedlings for their prompt enrolment, had arrived on the momentous morning of August 16. “The earthquake did slow us done, but the garden gave everyone such a focus when a lot of people were just living from day to day,” Mel said. Their prize includes $500 of Tui garden products, a garden shed from Duratuf and a visit by celebrity cook Annabel Langbein. “The children will meet someone that their mums watch on TV,” said Mel. “Not only do we have a beautiful garden, we have a cracker of a prize.”

I do most of my shopping at the op shops, but for the other stuff I prefer Nelson because if you shop in Blenheim you look the same as everyone else. Blenheim definitely needs cooler shops.

Nelson because it has more range of shops. I don’t go over that often, but when I do I like to shop.

I like both. There are a few extra shops in Nelson, particularly Kmart and Spotlight. I think as Blenheim gets bigger it could do with more shops.

I’ve never shopped in Nelson but sometimes I shop in Christchurch. I don’t find that much difference. You can get cheaper stuff there but if you want quality it is all the same.

Blenheim or Christchurch. I do go out of town sometimes because there is just not quite the overall selection here. There could be a few more shops in Blenheim.

I used to live in Nelson, so we still go over to visit family. We save up to go shopping there because there are better shops, free parking and Kmart has opened up. We’ll be doing all our Christmas shopping there.

News travels fast Last Wednesday the Sun published a story about my fishing reel which was stolen. Amazing, somehow this news travelled fast via friendly fishermen. First to Murchinson thence to a close friend in Piedmont California who called me to commiserate! They all knew the reel and envied me. I think the thief will find the reel to be a trifle hot and difficult to sell or to use in the company of others. Such a waste. If he has the courage to return it and receive my promise of a new reel and rod he would be accepted by the fly fishermen of Marlborough and forgiven for the misery he has given me. Philip Rossell

Ferry woes Dear Ed, About the shambles of the Cook Strait ferry service or rather the diminishing of it through the Aratere’s need for repair I note it was NZ First and Winston Peters who drew attention to it. I think back to the Winebox enquiry Peters exposed and other issues. Traveller

Facts about sugar Dear Ed, Love sugar? It could be making you sick in the Blenheim Sun (13 Nov 2013, p13) contained a number of incorrect and misleading comments about sugar. There is no credible evidence for moderate sugar intakes causing diabetes, inflammation, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or dementia. No one food or nutrient causes obesity. Total energy from all sources being greater than energy output is what leads to weight gain. Yes sugar is one source of energy, so over-eating it can lead to weight gain, but there is nothing uniquely fattening about sugar.

Sadly there is no silver bullet for healthy eating; it cannot be achieved without focussing on balancing the whole diet. Clearly high sugar intakes (as with high fat, protein, salt and alcohol intakes) are not appropriate, but sugar in moderation can be part of a balanced diet. Balance, variety and moderation is the key to good health so it is important to eat a wide variety of foods, in appropriate portion sizes, to get all of the nutrients we need. Animal cruelty Dear Ed, I have been thinking about the Department of Conservation’s messed-up 1080 drop at Nydia Bay/ Tennyson Inlet. One thing which is missed is the extreme cruelty. 1080 is a slow killing poison. I care about animals whether wild or pets or stock. I looked up about dying from 1080. Scientists in 1984 observed 1080 deaths on captive possums. “Deaths occurred from five to 127 hours hrs after dosing.” Vomiting, retching and spasms were observed.” Is 1080 the way civilised humans behave to animals? There is no opossum “problem” at Tennyson Inlet. I know the area. I also note DOC spokesmen so far. Where is Marlborough’s DOC manager recently made so after recent restructuring? Animal Lover

Parking turkeys Dear Ed, Like a lot of people I am getting fed up with the rudeness and overzealous behaviour of parking meter attendants. I had 41 minutes on my meter when I left it and 33 on it when I returned and there was a bearded turkey by my vehicle writing down details. Why? I felt intimidated. Is Council trying to kill the central business retail business? Does the firm contracted get a percentage of the fines? Why contract it out to profit focused contractors? Council needs a shakeup. It is a public relations disaster for council. It’s about time council got rid of meters and had 20 minute, 30 minute and one hour time limits instead. People need to have fair and reasonable access to shops. As for CBD retailers I feel sorry for them. Frank Henry

DOC and salmon farms Dear Ed, Do I have it right? The appeal against King Salmon’s salmon farms is being opposed by the Ministry of Primary Industries and Department of Conservation? Who are they acting for? The public who fund them or Malaysia’s Tiong family who run King Salmon? DOC to me is a disaster with this on the heels of the 1080 botch up at Nydia Bay/ Tennyson Inlet. Salmon farms are a blotch and a blight on the Sound’s beauty and environment. Hang your heads in shame DOC and MPI. You have forgotten you are public servants. Taxpayer

What to buy this Christmas!

Watches are always a great Christmas gift so let’s not confuse the issue. Here are my recommendations for Christmas 2013 with watches for all ages: The top of our list for tough, reliable and yet stylish sports watches for both guys and girls.

Red Cross grows vegetables for needy By Kristy Martin Twenty different types of vegetables are thriving in the Red Cross section of Marlborough Community Gardens. The vegetables were planted in August, but are already being harvested and replanted, thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers and community groups. “The idea was that the garden would be used for people who didn’t have a lot of money, or perhaps couldn’t afford to buy fresh fruit and vegetables,” said Gayle Chambers, programmes coordinator for New Zealand Red Cross Marlborough. “Alternatively, it could be for those who loved gardening but didn’t have a plot of their own.” The community gardens are located at Ralph Ballinger Drive in Blenheim, next to NMIT. The 120sqm plot, which is roughly the floor size of a small three bedroom house, was purchased by Red Cross in December 2012. “Back then it was an empty plot and we got it ploughed by the periodic detention group. “They got all the weeds out and put in

four loads of compost that were donated by different organisations.” WaterForce kindly donated and installed an irrigation system and local garden centres donated seeds. Gayle said it was wonderful to have seen the idea grow from a concept into a flourishing garden.

Organisations to benefit from the fresh vegetables so far are the Migrant Centre, the local Fijian community and St Marks. Red Cross is seeking other volunteers to help tend the garden and will be holding regular working bees from Saturday November 30.

Benefits of early childhood education During their early years, children go through critical stages of development and consistent, high-quality early childhood education can have long-lasting, beneficial effects on the overall development of children. Social and Emotional Development Having your child attend the same preschool programme throughout his or her early years allows him or her to develop relationships with the adults and children in that environment, which provides a sense of security. Cognitive Development High-quality early childhood development programmes that provide developmentally appropriate curricula, enable children to develop specific cognitive skills at the appropriate age. Language Development Language development occurs at a rapid pace in children between the ages of one and five years old. Children who are secure in their environment and with the people around them are more likely to engage in frequent, age-appropriate conversations.

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” - Henry B Adams

For those facing exams or preparing for tertiary study next year, here are some tips for exam preparation.

Look after yourself Try to be well rested and well nourished in preparation for exams. “Drink plenty of fluids, eat a good healthy breakfast,” advises Professor Sarah Moore, co-author of The Ultimate Study Skills Handbook. “The fresher and more energetic you feel, the more it will support your ability to tackle the cognitive challenges.” Plan your work

Learning through play What looks like child’s play is actually an important foundation for learning for life, says Rachael Steans, Kidicorp area manager, “We have three centres in Blenheim. ABC Mayfield, ABC Blenheim Central and ABC Springlands. “We want children to love learning so we put a lot of effort into creating an environment. We

want children to settle into school easily and be familiar with the habits and routines of school – it makes those next learning years so much easier. You’ll see it when you walk into our well equipped centres,” “The way we teach children is by working on the child’s current interests. Our skilled teachers then look for ways to weave

literacy, numeracy, mathematical and science into their interests. Along the way we encourage independence, practice turn-taking and support children to develop the social skills they will need for school. “We have NZ’s only ‘Be School Ready’ programme that readies children for that next big learning step,” ends Rachael.

Get into our kitchen Food plays a pivotal part in our lives. If you love food and enjoy cooking, are creative and meticulous, and savour flavour, texture and seasoning, then being a professional chef might be the perfect career for you. Tai Poutini Polytechnic offers a range of culinary programmes. From taster courses for school students or industry training short courses, to its flagship Diploma in Professional Culinary Arts, there’s sure to be something to whet your appetite for a culinary education.

Lead tutor Alex Hayward’s passion is clear. A chef ‘forever’, he’s worked in kitchens all over the world, but is now dedicated to teaching the culinary arts. It’s a hands-on role and he loves it. Alex teaches to the highest professional standard and expects the same from his students. ‘We run one of the best chef programmes around. It’s challenging and really stretches the boundaries. The chef trade is constantly evolving – we keep up with the changes, but also focus on traditional skills. We

want our students to be ready to work anywhere.’ Small class sizes mean students have plenty of one-on-one time with tutors and training restaurant Tutoro provides valuable ‘real world’ experience. There’s a strong sense of community at TPP and moving to the West Coast is a great lifestyle choice. ‘It’s an awesome place to live and work,’ says Alex. Some people concentrate better at night, others prefer to be up with the larks. Stick to a consistent working pattern so your mind and body can adjust, and take plenty of short breaks. Be on top of the practicalities It is easy to forget practical details, so be clear about simple things like start times, venue, equipment, material you can or cannot bring, and so on.

Education

“What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul.” - Joseph Addison

Want a career change?

Generally, the decision to change careers isn’t made lightly. It’s a process, and for some a dilemma that stirs many questions, doubts and fears. You may worry that a career change will lower your earnings, require an expensive investment in education and training, or force you to start from scratch in an unfamiliar industry. Never feel “stuck” in an unfulfilling job, because career

change options are greater than you may realise. Tackle the golden question: If you had all the money in the world, what would you be doing with yourself? Don’t hold back. This is brainstorming time. Make a list of all the things you’d rather be doing with your time. Consider careers that interest you. You might have studied accounting at college for the sake of job security and financial certainty. But all the time,

perhaps you really wanted to be a park ranger or a freelance troubleshooter. Think back to what once motivated you when you were younger––you will often find the kernel of the things that still motivate and thrill you there. Evaluate your skills and talents. Ask yourself: What am I good at? What do I most enjoy doing? Write down every skill you’re capable of. Don’t be shy. Does your current job give you satisfaction and utilize all your

potential? Identify transferable skills. After having listed all known skills and talents, identify what skills will best transfer over into the new line of work you’re hoping to change to. The longer the list, the easier the transition. Research the many educational opportunities available and start the application process. Once you have reached this point you are well on your way to establishing a new career.

Give yourself the best chance of admission to your chosen programme with these top tips for university applications. Research the university and study program Make sure that you have thoroughly researched both the study programs and the universities that you are applying to, so that you are certain that they meet your expectations and that you have the appropriate qualifications to meet all entry requirements. Be honest Admissions staff see thousands of applications every year and are very

experienced in spotting an ‘exaggerated’ application. Letters of recommendation Choose the people who write your letters of recommendation very carefully. They should know you and be able to talk about your strengths in detail, giving concrete examples if possible, and providing evidence that you have skills and knowledge relevant to your application. Preparation for tests Ensure that you have prepared well for any supporting tests that you are required to take as part of your application. Should it be necessary, enrol in a

preparatory program. Additional information Send additional information if you think it will reflect well on your application. Additional letters of recommendation from employers or evidence of your extracurricular activities can help. Be organized and meet deadlines Make sure you are aware of all deadlines and that you are prepared well ahead of time to ensure that all aspects of your application are complete. An incomplete application can delay a decision and may reduce your chances of being accepted.

Edna becomes a children’s author at 90 By Kristy Martin Proving it’s never to late for a career change, 90-year-old Edna Mugford has written her first children’s book. The book, titled Buddy Bee and the Ladybirds, was launched at Lynfords Furniture in Blenheim last Friday. Edna was there to meet some very young fans and sign copies of the book, which will be distributed in the coming weeks. But despite all the excitement, the modest woman says she’d sooner not create a fuss. “It’s just not my thing,” Edna said of all the attention she has been getting. Buddy Bee was a poem she wrote several years ago. Her daughter requested a copy one day, and then others followed suit. “It just grew from there,” says

Edna. Next thing she knew, her family had organised illustrator PG Rob to get on board, and Edna says the Central Otago-based woman did a marvellous job. “A poem in a book is just a poem. “When you put it with illustrations, it comes to life.” Edna has been writing poems for years. Living in a rest home in Blenheim, she likes to keep her mind active. “Most people sit around and watch TV. “That would drive me mad.” She also knits teddy bears and sews material bags for Lynfords customers, as her daughter Kay Thomason owns the store. Edna Mugford launched her children’s book ‘Buddy Bee and People wanting to purchase the Ladybirds’ at Lynfords Furniture on Friday and little fans the book can contact Lynfords. like Willem Lampe of Picton came along to get a signed copy.

Last week they did so for the last time. About 20 men and women gathered at Canvastown Former Canvastown residents met for the last time for on Tuesday to share fond Christmas lunch, ending a 30 year tradition. Photo supplied.

Bateman takes rallysprint series Fairweather’s Taylor Pass Rallysprint was held on Saturday November 16 with a record field of 36 cars. The road was in excellent condition with record times notched up. As expected, Blenheim driver Richard Bateman in his Evo 8 won both the event and the series, with his quickest time being 9.28.35. His expected competition disappeared with the early withdrawal of Rangiora driver Matt Summerfield in his WRX after his first run with mechanical issues. Second on the day was Christchurch driver Richard Baddock in the WRX on 9.40.56 followed by another Christchurch driver Mike Tall in an Evo 4 on 9.49.00. These were the only competitors to break 10 minutes. There was a generally high attrition rate due to off road excursions as well as mechanical issues and only 26 cars finished all six runs.

Cars run over 10kms of gravel starting from Beneagle station, south over the summit into the Awatere Valley. Once all the field arrives, contestants race back. This is done three times and the best time from each direction is combined. Twenty four of the entries were 2WD, creating intense competition in the smaller classes. Other local class winners included Upper Moutere’s Ashton Wood in a BDA Escort in the Classic class in 10.29.58. Havelock driver Jason Clark in his Starlet was the quickest in the 1301 to 1600cc class with 10.38.06 and another local, Jonathon Wilson, also in a Starlet, won the 0-1300cc with a time of 11.08.34. The event, the final round of the Nelson Marlborough Rallysprint Series, was promoted by the Marlborough Car Club.
