Rick White and Micah Lindsay-Brown of City Fitness Blenheim have won top fitness awards.
Win sets bar high Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk One of New Zealand’s biggest events within the fitness industry has awarded two Blenheim personal trainers with prestigious titles. Rick White and Micah LindsayBrown of City Fitness attended the NZ Fitness Industry Awards in Auckland on November 23 after being nominated. Rick won the ‘Mentor of the
Year’ award while Micah walked away with Personal Trainer of the Year. City Fitness as a company also won the Innovation Award. For Rick who is the City Fitness’s South Island Cluster Fitness manager, it was a double celebration as he initially trained Micah, and nominated her for her award. “I was so proud of Micah and what she has achieved. Her bright
personality and bubbly nature is what gets the rest of us going, she is a very special lady,” he said. Micah’s award was the perfect conclusion to what had been a “challenging year” for the personal trainer. “Being pregnant, working eight hour days with back to back clients and preparing for the awards with a Skype session with the judges was certainly a busy time,” she laughed.
Renwick School staff have spoken to parents and students after police warned the local community a suspicious man was lurking about. Police sent a letter to Renwick residents stating that a man had been seen acting inappropriately at various locations around Renwick, including using binoculars to look at children playing at Renwick School. He had also been following young women along the street, walking onto properties and observing houses where he had seen young women enter, police said. Renwick School deputy principal Robyn Lyall said staff were taking the issue seriously. “We’ve spoken to our community about it and we have talked with the students about stranger danger. This was something the school did anyway, but it was an opportunity to reiterate it, she said. Police said the incidents occurred in recent weeks. The man is described as Caucasian, aged in his early 20’s, with a small goatee beard. He has an average build and short, dark hair and sometimes wore sunglasses, a hoodie and jeans. Police were concerned his intentions were “criminally motivated” and have encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious activity immediately, by phoning 111. If you have any information regarding the man or his activities, phone Blenheim Police on 5785279.

Support for separate schools By Kristy Martin The majority of people who attended a public meeting about the future of the two Marlborough colleges were in favour of keeping the secondary schools at their independent sites. About 250 parents, teachers, former students and interested community members turned out to the Marlborough Convention Centre on Monday night to discuss the future of Marlborough Boys’ College and Marlborough Girls’ College. In a show of hands led by deputy mayor Terry Sloan, most said they preferred to keep the schools separate rather than face a merger. But emotions ran high as members of the audience, including Mr Sloan, a MBC old boy, spoke of the special history at the boys’ college and of concerns about a lack of facilities should the two schools be combined. Parents and teachers also worried about the limited space at the McLauchlan Street site, with its one playing field, for close to 2000 male and female students. One of the key points raised was that more information, including data and potential costs, needed to be provided before the community could make an informed decision. With a total of $13.6 million in repairs

needed to fix leaky buildings and earthquake strengthening at the colleges, the community is being asked how they want to see secondary education delivered in Blenheim into the future. Independent facilitator Janet Kelly, who is accepting public submissions, said the review was driven by the colleges and supported by the Ministry of Education, who had two representatives at the meeting, Patrick McIntyre and Simon Cruickshank. Marlborough Boys’ College chairman Tony de Reeper said the ministry was prepared to spend up to $34 million on the project, so he urged the public to take the opportunity and

The body of a man wearing a lifejacket was located by searchers on the shoreline near Kaikoura yesterday after a boat capsized. A member of the public reported seeing the 16ft capsized vessel about 8.15am in Whaler’s Bay and raised the alarm. The stern of the boat was floating with its bow submerged in the water. The body found was that of a 74-year-old man, whose lifejacket had not been inflated. More than 20 people, including Police, Coastguard and search and rescue volunteers continued their search for another crew member, aged 79, from the boat yesterday afternoon. The two men had set out earlier in the day to check crayfish pots.

have their say. He also pointed out that a merger between the colleges would lead to job losses. College principals Wayne Hegarty and Karen Stewart also addressed the crowd, stating that they were in favour of retaining the separate colleges and, of course, their jobs. Ms Kelly met with the principals and board chairs again yesterday to review the meeting. She has extended the date for public submissions to February 3 and said more information, including notes from the meeting and reports, would be published on both colleges’ websites. Another public consultation meeting will be held on January 20, 2014.

Hooked on adventure Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk For Blenheim’s Willis family hunting is a way of life and, in most cases, an adventure. Matt and Lisa Willis are already well known for their Hooked on Boars magazine as well as hosting their annual pig hunting event in Renwick. Now their passion for hunting is going to a whole new level. They have just released their first official hunting DVD titled simply ‘Hooked on Boars the DVD’ which features their own footage captured over the past four years. It features various methods of hunting pigs in and around Marlborough, and a little taste of what’s to come in future DVD’s. It includes narration by Matt who shares his own stories and experiences. This DVD is the result of a partnership between Matt, Lisa and local man Stu McCormick who have formed a new company, HOB Productions. Stu has in the past worked as a professional cameraman and will be filming hunts with Matt for future DVD’s they plan to release.
“It’s been a goal of mine to showcase all hunting in its many forms from pig and deer hunting also spotlighting through to bow hunting and even getting into the ocean for a bit of spear fishing” “We have had so much positive feedback and are looking forward to releasing a series of DVD’s which will feature hunts with local lads Leon Cresswell, Jasen Mears, Ricky Russ and our sons Kadin and Louis,” Matt said. Hooked on Boars the DVD has attracted interested from all over the world which is great news for Matt, who said his goal was also to target overseas markets. “Earlier this year I worked as a bow hunting guide on a safari park in the North Island where I guided some Americans hunting huge red stags. This sparked an interest to approach the American market with an upcoming bow hunting DVD showcasing this form of hunting in NZ,” he said. Hooked on Boars the DVD is available for purchase at Hunting & Fishing stores and online at www.hookedonboars.com and costs $39.95.
Hooked on Boars editor Matt Willis has released his first hunting DVD. Matt and Lisa are offering one copy of Hooked on Boars the DVD to a lucky Sun reader. To enter, simply send in a photograph showing; “How you are hooked on adventure”, along with your name, address and phone number to celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz Entries are not restricted to hunting, and close Friday, December 13.

Marlburians have a history of being very generous, especially at Christmas time. Staff at the Open Home Foundation appreciate the kindness of the Marlborough community and are asking for a little help for families in need so that they can have something to look forward to on Christmas morning. Christmas presents are currently being sought for children aged from newborn to 17 years. “While we appreciate all gifts, we tend to get a lot of gifts for younger children and not so many for teenagers,” said practice manager of Marlborough’s Open Home Foundation, Jennifer Bennett-Burrows.
Hi there!
Suggested gifts for teenagers can be anything from movie tickets, chocolates and toiletries to hair accessories, swimming towels or craft items. Those wanting to donate can deliver their gifts to the Sun newspaper office at 72 High Street in Blenheim. Unwrapped gifts are preferred, so they can be properly sorted. They will be collected on December 16 and then matched with local families. Right: The Open Home Foundation's Liz Furness, Christine Campbell and Jennifer Bennett-Burrows are seeking Christmas gift donations for foster children.

By Kristy Martin The sounds of children’s cheers filled the streets of Picton on Sunday as Santa made his way into town. Perched on a large float complete with leaping reindeer and flanked by his “little helpers”, Father Christmas waved and offered Christmas cheer to everyone he passed. Huge crowds attended the annual Christmas parade where close to 30 floats rolled along High Street in the bright afternoon sunshine. The Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band led the way, with fire trucks, ambulances, big rigs and boats all in tow.
Parade coordinator Beryl Bowers said the ‘Jingle Bellys’ belly dancers had brought an exciting new aspect to the longstanding parade. She also noted the Girl Guides as standout entrants with their unique float, complete with picnic table and tent. Kids lined the streets, eager to collect lollies and balloons as well as catching a glimpse of Santa Claus. After the parade, hundreds of people moved to the foreshore where they were entertained by Queen Charlotte College students and juggler Adrian Kirk.

Brooke McLeod and Joe Johnstone at The Depot, the new cafe on Charles Street.
The Depot is now open By Kristy Martin Providing local workers with quality takeaway food is the aim of Blenheim’s newest eatery, The Depot. On Charles Street, the premises formerly know as Zuppa has come back to its original owners Joe and Diana Johnstone. The couple, who have two young children, have returned to Marlborough to be closer to family after living in Australia for two years. Joe jokes that he sold Zuppa to good mates Jason and Louise Kennard “over a few beers and then bought it back over a few beers and a Skype session”. “It’s quite funny, when you think about it,” he laughs.
Rebranded as “The Depot” and now open, the business is being decked out with an industrial theme and its owners hope an array of fresh and affordable food choices will keep customers coming back. “We’ve got sandwiches, wraps, bacon and egg muffins, pizzas,” said Joe, who is also the previous owner of Figaro’s cafe. “The aim is that people can walk in and grab something ready-made, straight from the cabinet. “Everything is made onsite.” Fresh juices, smoothies and Coffee Supreme are also on offer. The Depot is open from 7am-4pm Monday to Friday and 8am-2pm Saturday.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: How do you feel about the new 4kmh speed threshold being enforced by police?
June Wratt Blenheim
Terry Bishell Blenheim
Luke Johnston Blenheim
Chevaughn Morrow Blenheim
Allen McWilliams Blenheim
I think it’s alright. If it gets people to slow down it’s a good thing. It’s easy to go over 50kmh, so you really have to watch it.
It shouldn’t be operating - it’s too strict. If you are overtaking someone and you get caught you’re buggered.
It’s good. I’ve got two young kids, pushing them around in a buggy, and it makes me feel safer. I just hope they can enforce it.
I think it’s fantastic and I think it should stay permanently. It stops the kids speeding and helps prevent death on our roads, so it can only be a good thing.
It’s a good idea. People always push the limits so it’s good to bring the threshold right down.

Family planning Dear Ed, Further to Bill Cox’s letter “No excuse” for neglecting children and so-called “child poverty” (15.11.13) You are so right! There have been Family Planning Assoc clinics in NZ for the past 60 years. Who has heard of them? What do they do? There is a lot of ignorance about! Young people know eveything, we are told. They are taught all about it in school! Are they? Do they know everything? No they do not! Neither do their mates, nor possibly their fathers either! I have 20 questions to test this theory. The questionnaire is part of a piece I am preparing about Family Planning and the appalling ignorance which causes many of today’s pregnancies. Dr Alice Bush ( a stalwart from FPA’s early days) said that an unwanted child was not the best beginning. The result was children having babies! The wanton creation of a new life is almost criminal. In fact, it is criminal if the girl is under age. Why do some young men flit from girl to girl like so many rampant tomcats? So many young girls are anyone’s for tuppence, as it were. Where’s their self-respect? Anyone heard or care about STD? Parenthood has been called New Zealand’s greatest amateur sport and it’s the only one for which training is minimal. Family Planner

Merger makes sense Dear Ed, At long last common sense is starting to prevail within the Education Ministry by proposing the merger of our two colleges. Apart from the earthquake risks with the buildings the boys’ college is a red herring, it would be dealt with regardless if necessary. The key is to educate the young people of Marlborough to a standard that will set them up for life and that includes social behaviour, social discipline and accountability for one’s own actions that can be achieved by mixing all together. It has been obvious that the existing policies of the two schools prefer not to deal with the real problems to educate all students regardless of the academic ability to the levels of being able to read and understand what they are trying to read and to listen.
Jill Thompson Blenheim It’s probably a good idea. I think it’s a good way to get people to slow down and it could help reduce accidents.
To be able to write so that they can succeed without having readers and writers when sitting tests at Polytechs and universities, pre employment forms, trade exams, etc and the newspaper. For too long our young people leaving school cannot add up numbers in their heads let alone write it down. How does this support merging the two colleges - it is social competition not just for the students also the teachers as that makes them accountable for their abilities to actually teach and achieve the standards the education policy requires... Believe me, this is why changes are being made and don’t the teachers hate the thought of accountability. The sooner the decision is made to merge the better. P.J.
Dear Ed, How many readers know that BNZ has just announced help to support iwi and hapu through the Treaty settlement process. The bank’s new $50 million funding facility will provide iwi with the funding to help bridge funding shortfalls to support them to complete their Treaty claim. The funding, along with advice from BNZ’s Maori business team, is expected to help unlock an estimated $1.5 billion worth of existing Treaty claims. I think most Kiwis are fed up with the treaty gravy train. Key opposed it in Opposition, now he’s for it. BNZ see business in treaty claims but with no care for the average Kiwi paying interest rates. Sheer and shameful greed! Don Coyote
Christmas wish Dear Ed, The Wednesday Sun arrived at my door today. A shaft of sunlight on a wet miserable day, thank you. It gave me a lift to see Santa Claus has come early to Blenheim. I found the different ideas from Sun readers as to what they wanted for Christmas, very interesting. Opportunity knocks I thought. This is my chance to tell him what I want, no... what I need for Christmas. I have waited a long time and expressed my want and my need often, now I have the chance to let Santa know direct. Here and Now. Hooray Here goes!!! Please Santa could you give me and those around me a Pedestrian Crossing for Christmas? From Middle Renwick Road (P.S I’ve been mmm..... quite good)

Marlborough Boys’ College head boy and first XV captain Atunaisa Moli has been signed by Waikato for the upcoming season.
Moli signed by Waikato By Adam Poulopoulos After a whirlwind year in which he led his school on and off the rugby field, Atunaisa Moli is preparing for his next challenge. The Marlborough Boys’ College head boy and first XV captain has been signed by Waikato for the upcoming season, and will move to Hamilton to play and study in the new year. The prop, who can play on both sides of the scrum, has had a huge year on the paddock. He led Marlborough to their first Press Cup win, and was selected for the New Zealand Secondary School Team’s tour to Australia last month. Most recently, he returned to Blenheim last week after attend-
ing a New Zealand under-20s training camp in Palmerston North. He said it was a gruelling experience. “We had something called the longest day, which was from 3pm-3pm Saturday-Sunday. “It was 24 hours of training and we only got one hour sleep. It was pretty hardout.” He said the feedback he gained was invaluable “They said my fitness needs to improve, and also my nutrition, the food that I’m eating.” He said he had fond memories of the past twelve months. “It was a challenge throughout the year, and looking back I enjoyed it.
“I experienced a lot of new things, especially flying to Hamilton and Australia.” Moli said he hopes to study at the University of Waikato in a subject that uses his strengths in maths and chemistry. For now, he heads to Tonga for the Christmas break before returning. As for the future, he said his big motivation was pretty obvious. “Playing for the ABs is the big dream, but for now, it’s just about developing my body and getting stronger. “I’d love to play ITM cup and super rugby for Waikato, but we’ll see how it goes. “Playing for the Makos would be pretty cool too.”

Sinead down but not out Blenheim Kickboxing’s gutsy female fighter Sinead Travers has vowed to push on, despite a disappointing loss during her latest round of competition in Nelson. “I may not have won, but it isn’t about winning or losing,” she said. “As long as we finish those three rounds and do what we have trained so hard for, then our trainer has done his job.” Sinead lost on points to Antje Schmidt from Nelson Fight Club at the Night of Wrecking 12. The 22-year-old is the only female fighter from the Blenheim club and won her first fight back in September. “It was more nerve-wracking than the first one and I think that was because I kind of knew what to expect. “I guess ignorance really is bliss in situations like this. “The training for this fight was a lot more intense and a lot harder, and very testing of my will power and dedication.”

Blenheim Kickboxing trainer Rajai Shram, fighter Sinead Travers and ringside assistant Jenna Grant.
Being tired and sore, the nerves of having her mother in the crowd and the isolation of being the only girl fighter in the change room were all challenges. But Sinead’s confidence gave her the strength to keep going. “My opponent had a much longer reach than I did, very long legs and hard kicks, but I kept my ground and checked a lot of kicks
from her. “I wasn’t really upset that I lost, I had learnt so much since my first fight and I’ve made heaps of improvements.” Sinead knows she is a very different person since taking up the sport. “Mentally, I’m a new person. I believe in myself and trust myself more.”
