Fraudsters preying on our elderly and vulnerable
By Kristy Martin Relentless scammers are targeting Marlborough’s vulnerable elderly population, in some cases sending up to 14 letters a day demanding money. One Blenheim resident, aged in their mid-70s, lost thousands of dollars after responding to a series of letters with the promise of riches, prizes and good fortune. The letters continued for three months and got so bad that the person was receiving up to 14 per day and became so overwhelmed they could barely cope. Continued page 2 Wendy Lefebre from Age Concern Marlborough shows how many scam letters were received by one elderly resident over the past three months.

TWICE WEEKLY
Fraudsters preying on elderly residents Continued from page 1 Wendy Lefebre from Marlborough Age Concern said people needed to be wary, as the effect of being scammed could be devastating, both financially and emotionally. “We’ve heard of people who have lost everything,” she said. “When they finally realise it’s a scam they are too ashamed to come forward.” Ms Lefebre said victims were often those who were lonely, isolated or had something lacking in their life, which made them more susceptible. She asked that family members and carers also remain vigilant. Scams were coming in the forms of letters and emails involving lotteries, sweepstakes, offers from clairvoyants and the promise of big inheritance claims. In many cases, the person was asked to pay a small fee in order to receive a large, lump sum payment. Bronwyn Groot, national security and fraud Coordinator for BNZ, said scammers preyed on the elderly using powerful psychology that turned them against loved ones and even encouraged them to send money to the scam rather than pay for food or electricity bills. “If you respond to one of these letters, your name will then be onsold by the scammers and you will soon be inundated with mail,” she said.
“One person received 169 scam letters in one day. “When New Zealanders send away their cheques and credit card details, they are potentially assisting criminal gangs and organised crime.” Ms Groot said there were a number of warning signs people could look for, including whether the letter came from overseas, if it said the receiver had won money or was being entered into an overseas lottery, if it was from a clairvoyant offering help or if it requested a processing fee. Blenheim Police community constable Russ Smith said there were many different types of scams, with recent ones including scratchies sent out by mail and phone calls from hotel groups offering free accommodation. “People need to remember that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” he said. “Nobody in this world gives anything away for free. “Use common sense and don’t just see the dollar signs. “Never give out your personal details.” If you have been the victim of a scam, contact your bank and the police as soon as possible. You can also report the scams through organisations like Scam Watch, Consumer Affairs, Age Concern and the BNZ's national security and fraud coordinator Bronwyn Groot is a scam specialist. Power trust donates $1.2m to theatre The Marlborough Electric Power Trust (MEPT) has pledged $1 million for the new ASB Civic Theatre. Trustee Leo McKendry, who announced the funding at the group’s AGM last Friday, said the money was additional to a $200,000 donation made earlier this year. The money was allocated after the Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust applied for a $2m grant to cover increased strengthening of the new building’s framework and foundations in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes. This had created considerable additional costs for the project. In exchange for the donation, the MEPT will have naming rights of the theatre’s entrance foyer area facing Hutcheson Street. “We’re obviously delighted; just
thrilled,” said Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley. He said the MEPT, who owned all the shares in Marlborough Lines, was one of the first supporters to jump onboard when the project began. Mr Moseley said although the theatre was a $17.5 million build, the trust would continue to fundraise right up until the doors opened in 2015. This would ensure the building was fitted out with state-of-the-art equipment. The MEPT consists of six trustees who oversee the running of Marlborough Lines on behalf of the consumers, Mr McKendry said. Three of the six trustees will be up for renewal in March, when an election is held.

$ New Zealand’s Got Talent 2013 winner Renee Maurice, formerly of Picton was thrilled with her win.
Second year a Marlborough singer wins NZ’s Got Talent Former Picton woman Renee Maurice, a 22-year-old singer based in Wellington, was named the 2013 winner of New Zealand’s Got Talent. This is the second time a winner was announced from Marlborough following Clara van Wel’s win last year. Now Renee, a singing tutor for StarJam, has seen her hard work pay off. Singing the challenging Jennifer Holliday torch song, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”, she was very decisively voted into the top spot by viewers. Renee knew she had to choose a song that would showcase her impressive vocal range, and she had the astonished audience and judges in the theatre up
on their feet before the song had even finished. Renee is taking home the Grand Prize of $100,000 and a Toyota RAV4. “When Tamati read my name out I was just stunned, as well as honoured and grateful that people had taken the time to vote for me.” Renee said. “My goal with the prize is to help my parents first, as this gives us the opportunity as a family to have no financial burdens. “I can continue to do what I love without worrying about money. “Now that I have this platform I want to perform live as much as possible and do larger gigs.”

Waste contract The company managing the transfer station and resource recovery centre has won the contract to take over kerbside rubbish and recycling collection from July next year. It will also advance a new plan for the recycling of more commercial and industrial waste in Marlborough. Council says the new combined contract consolidating all waste management services is within budget and will not result in any increased costs to ratepayers. The company, Metallic Sweeping (1998) Limited, will take on the operation of all the transfer stations, coin skips, the resource recovery centre and reuse shop, the E waste facility and salvage yard and the kerbside collections of rubbish and recycling.
Market nights The Marlborough Artisan Market will be held tomorrow night and next Thursday as part of Blenheim’s late-night Christmas shopping. Shops will be open until 7.30pm both nights and there will be free parking in town from 4pm. The market will run in its usual location on Wynen street and there will also be carols in the Forum.
Santa’s Grotto Members of the public are invited to visit Santa’s Grotto at the Beachcomber Inn in Picton in order to see some vibrant Christmas decorations on display. The display is open this Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. It will also be open from next Saturday, December 21, until Tuesday December 24 from 12pm to 10pm. Entry is by gold coin donation.
Report favours two colleges with shared facilities By Kristy Martin Two buildings at Marlborough Boys’ College are in such disrepair that they must be demolished, according to an engineer’s report. The technology block represents an “unsafe environment for teaching” and has major structural, plumbing and electrical problems, while the arts block has been deemed a “haphazard and ad-hoc teaching environment”. Meanwhile, the Marlborough Girls’ College food technology block and two large classroom blocks have “defective weather integrity” and its gymnasium and hall are “unlikely to perform to an appropriate standard in an earthquake”. The report, by Wellington engineering firm Aurecon, estimates it would cost $53.5 million dollars to completely rebuild the two Blenheim colleges at a new site. While this was the best option to provide a modern learning environment and the least disruption for students, the cost involved rendered it unfeasible. Instead, the preferred option was having some shared facilities at MGC, on McLauchlan Street, and keeping MBC largely at its existing site, on Stephenson Street. This plan was expected to cost $18 million. The report, completed in August 2012 considered four options and accounted for a ‘whole of government’ approach, including maintenance, operation and travel costs, over a 10 year period. Option 1: Continuation of plans for upgrading and replacing existing buildings on the two sites independently. Option 2: Redevelopment onto a new site for both new schools. Option 3: Rebuilding of the MBC on the MGC site, with the objective of sharing specialist facilities. Option 4: (preferred option) Some form of

By Glenise Dreaver After two years in the planning, the Marlborough Heritage Trust, which will take over the assets of some of Marlborough’s often scattered historical treasures, is becoming a reality. Many different organisations have had ownership of these assets and the move will bring them together under single trusteeship. All the trustees are in the process of signing the document and the first change of ownership, the Edwin Fox in Picton, will follow from that says Marlborough Historical Society president and Edwin Fox Society committee member Dale Webb. The Marlborough Historical Society’s operational activity, but not its historical collections, will also soon come under the trust’s umbrella with the transfer of the Museum and Archives, the Heritage Education programme, and the online Past Perfect project. These, along with the buildings, budgets and staff that support all these operations, will be handed over. The chair of the working party that has formed the trust, Dale Webb, says there was almost unanimous agreement that the collections of the Marlborough Historical Society would remain in their ownership, but be on indefinite loan to the trust. The trust in turn will be fully responsible for their security, care, conservation and display. He said that the Historical Society also has more than 20 buildings of various

sizes and functions at Brayshaw Heritage Park and the trust will very probably take over all, or most of them. There is already significant co-operation between the Edwin Fox Society and the Marlborough Historical Society, with the latter providing proper controlled storage for documents owned by or relating to the Edwin Fox. Furniture and other period items have, in turn, been lent to the Edwin Fox to assist with the displays now in the ship. Mr Webb says that the Edwin Fox Society and Marlborough Historical Society will then be able to focus more on activities
that are of interest to their members rather than running what have become substantial administrative operations, with the challenges that accompany them. Issues resulting from the large budgets, insurance, commercial contracts, permanent staff, buildings maintenance, health and safety legalities and the like will be dealt with by the trust. “Generally the members are more interested in discovering more about the history of the many, many treasures we have here in Marlborough, seeing that heritage filmed, explained or written about and visiting it,” said Mr Webb.

By Celeste Lodewyk Former Picton woman Ali Harper who has carved her name on the international theatre stage is returning to the region for another performance in the hit act ‘Bombshells’. The show returns to the Picton Little Theatre following its success over a month ago and features this Friday and Saturday. According to Ali, Bombshells is a celebration of women of all shapes, sizes and personalities. “I act out six different personalities that everyone has met before and it’s guaranteed to have people laughing, it’s going to be a lot of fun. “The show went down well the last time we were here and I think the Picton Little Theatre is the perfect setting,” she said. Based in Christchurch, Ali said she enjoys returning to her “home” where she holds many fond memories from her
childhood. She was born in the Picton Hospital on Christmas day in 1971 after a mad dash by her parents from Blackwood Bay where the family lived. “I was put into a beer crate for the journey home,” Ali laughed. Ali’s father Leon Harper was quite the character and well known for his “charisma”. “I remember doing gigs and people would come up to me and ask if I was Leon Harper’s daughter. “They would then launch into stories from when they would park their boats at Blackwood Bay and have the most rip roaring times, my mind boggles at what went on. So many great memories were formed here,” she said. Tickets are selling fast at Take Note Picton Friday’s Matinee show at 2pm, and Saturday’s show at 7:30pm.

An acrylic painting on board depicting five men in a whaling boat has been commissioned for the Picton Museum. Painted by Marlborough Boys’ College student Aiden Smith (pictured), the work is based on the image Nantucket Sleigh Ride and is set to be mounted and displayed in the museum's whaling extension. MBC principal Wayne Hegarty described Aiden as a talented painter with scholarship potential. The 18-year-old artist said the painting took him two to three days and that it was his first commissioned work. The painting will complement the museum’s Swiftsure whaling boat built by ex-whaler Ron Perano.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: An international test shows NZ children’s literacy levels have dropped dramatically in the last ten years. Why do you think this is so?

I think it’s the parents. They need to accept responsibility and encourage children to be the best that they can be.
I’d say technology. I just scraped in at the end of books. Now they’re brought up around technology, things like E-readers.
The teachers have too much paperwork. There’s not enough time for lesson preparation.
Children watch too much TV. Too many computer games. Parents aren’t reading to their children at night either.
Television babysits a lot and teachers have a lot of paperwork to do.

Dear Ed, For goodness sake Marl 4 Fun when will you get things right? 1st, we had the A&P Show, Garden Marl, plus another event that clashed on the same weekend. This weekend there was the Mistletoe Market plus the Xmas Parade at the same time. Mistletoe Market
would normally go till 2pm or so but this year they had to pack up earlier all because the Xmas Parade clashed on their day. Can you not get it right? Surely you can spread each event over the weekends so they don’t all clash together?? One Wonders???

Stolen Rabbit Dear Ed, No doubt many readers would have read about the beautiful tame rabbit that had been making itself at home at McKendrys CarCorner? Well, it was only last week (Monday 2nd Dec) we learnt some miserable person stole the rabbit for themselves for a pet. How flippen miserable is that? Even the staff at Countdown saw it all happen and approached the culprits. I only hope they and their parents are feeling guilty right now, as someone will know who you are. Perhaps you should return it to its rightful home Pet Fans
Outstanding result Dear Ed, I wish to congratulate Margaret Hazelwood, who competed in the Hanmer Holiday Homes Alpine Marathon on the weekend with distinction. The course goes from Lake Tennyson to Hanmer. Her time was 3 hrs 37 min 41 sec which put her in first place Veteran Female 60 – 69, beating her time of last year by 14 minutes. Overall she was the second female home beaten by Bridget Thompson of Dunedin whose time was very smart in 3 hrs 5 mins 37 sec. In the total field Margaret was 12th home. A tough race on the day experiencing wind, sun, rain. Well done. Les McKay

Blackrose celebrates first year in business Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Willy Wills is a minister, a marriage celebrant and award winning tattooist who this Friday will be celebrating an important milestone, his business Blackrose Tattoo Emporium’s first year operating in Blenheim. What makes the day unique is that Friday is of course the 13th which is considered one of the unluckiest dates on the calendar, but for Willy it’s one to celebrate. So with this in mind he will be having a ‘Friday the 13th’ themed promotion throughout the day (see advertisement). “It’s really to thank everyone who has supported me and the team in our first year. Without our clients we wouldn’t be here,” he said. When asked if his first year was as successful as he had hoped, Willy replied; “I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but it’s been the loyalty of our clients that has put us here. “I also want to thank Rick from Roast on the Run who rented us this premises, he was the only one who would

For Jarrad the past year has also been successful with his client base and experience growing every day. “I basically taught myself and have been tattooing for nearly four years. I joined Willy when he first opened and the first year here has been really good,” he said.

Pelorus River stars in Hollywood Marlborough’s Pelorus River hit the Hollywood red carpet this week, featuring in a giant pop-up book of key locations from the second film of The Hobbit Trilogy. The Book of New Zealand is on-site at the Beverly Hilton for five days this week, building up to the Hollywood world premiere of The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug. The film is scheduled for worldwide release on December 13. The installation is a spectacular pop-up book occupying an area roughly the size of two tennis courts and 40’ high – making it the world’s largest book – and housed in a covered structure that has been constructed over the past three weeks on the Beverly Hilton carpark. It sets the stage for media activity and interviews with Hobbit stars, and provide an innovative setting for New Zealand hospitality and film business events. Pelorus River (starring as Forest River in the film) is one of four New Zealand locations featuring in the book. The Pelorus River scene was actor Stephen Hunter’s (Bombur’s) favourite day on set, commenting in The Hobbit Trilogy Production Blog; “I think my favourite day on set – unquestionably was floating down the Pelorus River in barrels… That was way cool, and if they ever make it a ride, life time pass please," he said. Aidan Turner, who plays Kili, told the
New Zealand Herald he was waiting for the barrel scene theme park ride “to open up somewhere.” "It's the most fun I've ever had in my entire life," he said. Luckily he doesn’t have to wait, as local business Pelorus Eco Adventures has launched guided canoe excursions along the stretch of river the scene was filmed at. International media have already visited the location in the buildup to the premiere, and many more are expected. The Pelorus River is a favourite swimming, camping, picnicking and fishing spot for locals and visitors, and is a short 40-minute drive from Blenheim, or 12 minutes from Havelock. Pelorus River was the last Main Unit filming location to be confirmed during the location scout, and the most difficult to find. Supervising Location Manager Jared Connon said Director Sir Peter Jackson had very particular visions of a solid rock shoreline surrounded by a fantastic forest where the barrels would come ashore. Sir Peter commented in The Hobbit Trilogy Production Blog; “We are finally going to put our dwarves in barrels, it looks like fun, I would do it myself if I wasn’t busy doing other things," he said.

Helping babies sleep safely New Zealand’s first Safe Sleep Day took place last Friday and staff at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim took the opportunity to speak with visitors about safe sleeping practices for babies. Safe Sleep Awareness Day, which will now be held annually, raises awareness of the importance of safe sleeping for babies to prevent Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI). Every year in NZ, 60 babies die from Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI - also known as SIDS or cot death). Paediatrics nurse Lucy
Huthnance said the most important things to remember to protect your baby while they sleep were position, eliminate, place and encourage or P-E-P-E. Position the baby flat on his or her back to sleep, face up towards the heavens. Eliminate smoking in pregnancy and protect baby with a smoke free whanau, whare and waka. Place baby in his or her own baby bed, face clear of bedding. Encourage and support mum, so that baby is breastfed.
Right: Wairau Hospital paediatrics nurse Lucy Huthnance shows how to correctly position a sleeping infant at the hospital's safe sleep display.
Making a splash at 90 Jean Barnes may be turning 90 today, but she is still young at heart. The Seddon woman will celebrate a quiet birthday with family, but yesterday her swimming group wanted to surprise her with a visit from the Sun during their Aquagentle class at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. The 10-strong Seddon group, who participates in the low impact water aerobics each week, also held a small party for her at the swim centre’s café after their class. Jean’s son Robbie and granddaughter Jessica are both heavily into sports and encouraged her to take up Aquagentle, which she has since come to love. Jean has lived in Seddon since 1957, when she came up from Seddon woman Jean Barnes (front), pictured with her aquagentle Christchurch to work as a district swimming group, is celebrating her 90th birthday today. nurse.

No bike, no training, no worries Sun Reporter Kristy Martin took part in the 90km Rotoiti to Renwick bike race at the weekend and shares her experiences. A few weeks ago, I was asked to do a 25km bike ride and scoffed at the notion I would even be able to cycle that far. But on Sunday, I faced my fears and managed to complete the 25km leg of the 90km Rotoiti to Renwick race. On a borrowed bike and with no training. I even won a bottle of wine for being the fastest woman in my category. Bucket list: tick. When he approached me with the proposal, event organiser Mike Gane said he liked getting people out of their comfort zone. I protested that I didn’t own a bike and had only cycled a handful of times in the past decade, but this didn’t seem to deter him. He would get me a bike and a helmet, he said. No problem. I half-heartedly agreed and then conveniently forgot about the ride until two days beforehand when Mike called, wanting to know why I hadn’t collected my bike from Cycle World in Blenheim. On Saturday, Cycle World owner Ray Dunstan adjusted a road bike for me, pumped up its tyres and handed me a helmet. Since it was the day after the work Christ-
mas party, you might say I was suffering a slight hangover. As Ray placed the bike in my car, I subtly shoved an empty McDonald’s bag under my seat, hoping he wouldn’t notice. My first attempt at ‘training’ was getting up early on the day of the event to take the bike for a half-hour spin, just to make sure I could control the thing. I’m not too proud to admit I had no idea how to work the gears or even how to position myself on the seat. But by that stage it was too late. When I reached the starting point, the Wairau Valley Tavern, I was in a mild state of panic. But the comforting words of the other social riders encouraged me to get out there and just give it a go. The wind wasn’t strong and it was a nice, easy ride on a mostly flat road. By the end of the race, I was sore and tired, but I felt like I could achieve anything. So thanks Mike, for the encouragement, and thank you, Ray, for loaning me the bike. I guess I’ll see you guys at the next event.

At the start line of the 25km ride were social riders Annie and Nugget Waitai and Brenda and Chilly Chilvers.
146 cyclists, mostly from Blenheim, took part in the race, which started at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes national park and finished near Broadbridge Transport in Renwick. There were four categories of the 90km ride from social to racing, plus a 43km leg and a 25km route. While rain disintegrated some competitors’ numbers, organiser Mike Gane reported the fastest competitors as tandem duo Simon Kennett (of the Kennett brothers fame) and John Randall from Wellington. The fastest solo man was Andy MacDonald and fastest woman across the line was Kim Marshall.

Success for North as he heads South Story by Darrell Bate Blenheim’s Paddy North has taken an early lead in the 2013 DHL Speedweek Saloon Series after the completion of two rounds and the weather cancelling the third. Eastern States Speedway hosted the opener Friday evening, North collecting a second in the 20 lap feature before repeating his performance on Saturday at Christchurch’s Woodford Glen
Speedway taking him to the top of the points table going into the week’s closing rounds. Greenstone Park Raceway in Greymouth was the scheduled venue for round 3 on Sunday however heavy rainfall deemed it impossible to run with Invercargill next on the agenda this evening. The 22 car field will race at Riverside Speedway before returning up to Beachlands Speedway
in Dunedin on Thursday and Friday being hosted at Cromwell’s Central Motor Speedway before the final round at Ashburton on Saturday. The Lovelady Racing Team Ford Mustang has recently been setup for North and after his first time behind the wheel last Friday, both he and crew chief John Lovelady are happy with the car and the results thus far. Saloon racing is reasonably different
from North’s usual ride in his Super Saloon being restricted by engine size and other controlled components. Tauranga racers Chris Taylor and Chris Taylor currently sit 2nd and 3rd respectively on the points ladder at present. Fellow local, Paul Cambie is the only other Marlborough entrant completing the series sitting 14th going into round 4 in his Ford Falcon Saloon.
