Bouncing back Real estate boom begins
By Glenise Dreaver “The Clifford Bay decision? “It’s absolutely massive!” says Mark Stevenson of Mark Stevenson First National Real Estate in Blenheim. Since the decision not to proceed with the relocation of the ferry terminal from Picton, he said there was a very different mood in Marlborough. “People were waiting for certainty before making a decision to spend.” Continued page 2 Mark Stevenson is feeling positive in the lead up to Christmas.

Big recovery in local real estate market Continued from page 1 With the forecast expenditure of between $60-$100m alone on the Port Marlborough ferry facility, and plans for more Picton foreshore redevelopment being discussed, he said there would be a boost to confidence for future employment in that area. “As well, it is securing a viable tourism industry.” The uncertainty surrounding Clifford Bay over the past two years had prevented both local and external
investors making long term decisions in real estate. However, now the way forward was clear. Another major issue for real estate investment in Marlborough during 2013 was the earthquakes. “Until then, it had been a pretty good year for real estate in Blenheim and the surrounding areas.” The decision by insurance companies to provide insurance subject to stricter conditions saw volumes of sales falter Marlborough-wide. However, he says, this barrier has
now been removed Rising confidence in the wider Marlborough primary producing economy was being fuelled by mussel prices up from a low of $450 per tonne to $1000. “And sav blanc is lifting from $1000 to $1600 per tonne. As well, there are increasing forestry returns.” Liquefaction studies in the wake of the earthquakes had however, identified significant issues for some areas previously designated for future residential development.
This had created a shortage of titled sections that will take some time to overcome, he says. With an aging population looking to downsize homes there was, he believed, an increasing market for smaller sections to be met and infill in the inner circle was one option. As he looks to better things ahead, Mark said. “I think everyone is pleased to see this year finish. The number 13 in 2013 may have been a forewarning for us!”

TWICE WEEKLY
By Glenise Dreaver The new head boy of Queen Charlotte College, Leon Bristow, has a quiet maturity that belies his seventeen years. Not surprising – he has already overcome challenges that would daunt far older people. Leon was in year six, a prize-winning athlete and high performing student when he found out he had brain cancer. Tests found a large tumour of seven centimetres in diameter. Twelve hours of brain surgery could not totally remove it without doing impossible damage. His parents were warned to prepare for the worst. “Probably just one or two years,” says his mother Marianne. Neither surgery or later treatment stopped Leon in his tracks. Radiation therapy left him very tired, but as most of it was during the holidays, he missed little school. His friends kept in touch and, holidays or not, he was given schoolwork - “of course”. Basically, that was that. Despite problems with the sight in one eye, and a feeling of blockage in one ear, Leon’s life has continued as usual. “It just happened. I can’t change it. But I don’t feel I’ve lost anything. And it was so long ago.”
He now plays basketball and balances study with mentoring young students having issues at school, as well as being a part time waiter at Le Cafe. He’s also done the demanding Cactus course twice and encourages the Canteen programme at school. Leon’s officially in remission, so went to Europe with the 2013 school trip, but is disappointed he can’t do Outward Bound until he’s five years seizure free. “I’ve only been three and a half.” He’s hoping his 2013 results will match last year’s merit endorsement and he’s looking forward to working with head girl Tamsin Woolf, at right. “We’ve already talked about new things to bring to the table. “We’re excited. Our friends are excited. It’s going to be a great year.”

Sad passing of Nadine Francis It is with sorrow that The Sun reports that Nadine Francis, who appeared on the front page on Friday December 13, has died. Nadine was determined that she wanted to tell the world about the wonderful staff and facilities at Hospice Marlborough.
In her last week of life, she rallied enough to ask for an interview and also used the opportunity to pass on her message about the dangers of smoking. We extend our deep sympathy to her family and friends at this sad time.
Dead dolphin may have been struck by boat By Kristy Martin A dead dolphin found in the Marlborough Sounds on Sunday has been sent to Massey University for an autopsy. The adult male hector’s dolphin was found injured and in distress at Onahau Bay near Picton but later died, according to the Department of Conservation. DOC Sounds district manager Roy Grose said there was some speculation the mammal had been hit by a boat, as it was found with blood and grazes on its side, but it was too early to tell. “Unfortunately we don’t know what the dolphin died of,” he said. “It was found in a distressed state having trouble breathing and swimming.” Mr Grose said several members of the public reported finding the creature and then stayed with it until DOC staff arrived. “I’d like to thank the people for

reporting it. “There were many different people involved, both commercial operators and people living in the Sounds.” Mr Grose said hector’s dolphins were among the rarest dolphins in the world and were only found in New Zealand. They grow to just over one metre in size and are recognised by their rounded dorsal fin. The autopsy results could be available as early as this week.

By Kristy Martin Who would’ve thought that in today’s world of gadgets and gizmos, the most popular toys are still the timeless classics like Lego, Barbie and Hot Wheels cars? The toy departments at The Warehouse and Farmers are doing roaring trades in the lead-up to Christmas, aided by extended shopping hours, and their expert staff have reported that the most sought-after toys are the same ones that were popular when they were kids. “It’s crazy, anything to do with Barbie still walks off the shelves, even though she is 50 years old,” said Chrissie Grayling, head of the toy department at The Warehouse Blenheim. “Lego is always a hit, and the new Lego ‘Friends’ for girls is really popular. “Boys still love their remote control cars and Hot Wheels, while Hana Berry, 8, with a ‘Friends’ Lego set and Kaito Berry, 12, with a Planes toy, both items which the new Big Hugs Elmo and My have been very popular at Farmers. Little Pony are disappearing fast. “It is all the good old brands, the At The Warehouse, the big novtrademark toys, nothing weird and elty teddy bears have been a huge wonderful.” Debbie Bennett, toy merchandis- hit with all ages. “People drag them all over the er at Farmers Blenheim, agreed. She named Lego, Barbie and shop,” Chrissie said. “We find them in the strangest Elmo among the hot favourites, along with the new Disney Planes places.” Water guns have also been very toys, which were, quite literally, popular, especially with this hot flying off the shelves. “The Friends Lego for girls is weather. The Warehouse Blenheim will be selling like crazy. We just can’t open until midnight every night up seem to get enough of it.” MGP scooters were popular with to December 23 and until 9pm on older boys and girls, she said, Christmas Eve. Warehouse Blenheim team leader Chrissie Grayling and Farmers Blenheim is open until siblings Olly Pauling, 7, and Caitlin Pauling, 11, display while the Leapfrog Leap Pads tablets for kids were also selling fast. 11pm tomorrow night. some of the most popular Christmas toys.

Lights open to public viewing By Kristy Martin After years of spreading Christmas joy to invited guests only, Marie Parnwell is for the first time opening up her fabulous lights display to the public. The Renwick woman, who doesn’t like to be in the public eye, has spent two months setting up the display in Renwick’s Pioneer Church on the corner of Havelock and Nicholson streets. So far, she has had 14 preschool groups visit the display and a number of local rest
home residents. “The first thing the kids ask me is ‘How much did this cost?’, to which I tell them ‘I lost count many years ago’,” Marie laughs. “One elderly lady was looking at it and said she wished she was a child again. “It has brought great delight to many people.” Marie began decorating her home at Christmas time eight years ago. Each year, her displays got larger and more elaborate and she began inviting
family and friends to see them. In 2012, she decided to turn this passion into a fundraiser for Hospice Marlborough and invited guests to view the display, in her garage, for gold coin donation. This year continues that tradition, but Marie has instead opened up the display to all members of the public. The display, at the church, will be open Saturday-Tuesday from 8.30pm to 10.30pm for gold coin donation, with all money going to Hospice Marlborough.

Body identified
The man whose body was found in Greville Harbour, D’Urville Island on Thursday afternoon has been identified as Donald Alastair MacKay, aged 82, who lived aboard his yacht Nokomis in the Nelson-Marlborough area. Witnesses reported having seen Mr MacKay in a dinghy cleaning the hull of his yacht earlier in the afternoon. Some time later they noticed his dinghy adrift with no one onboard. His body was discovered floating nearby. The death does not appear suspicious.

at Collins Valley, between Rai Valley and Nelson around 11:30am on Monday. The truck had also collided with a second car resulting in a woman and her passenger being flown by Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter to Wairau Hospital.
Over the weekend Marlborough Police arrested 21 people for a range of offenses. Five were held for detox and five received pre-charge warnings for disorderly behaviour, fighting and breaching the liquor ban.
Twice arrested A 29-year-old unemployed male was arrested twice, the first on Friday 13 for wilfuly trespassing on the Grove Road Z Site and then again the next day for wilful damage. A 25-year-old male serviceman was also arrested twice on Friday night. First he breached the liquor ban and received a pre-charge warning before being released, then he was later arrested for fighting on Scott Street. He was held in custody until sober and will appear in the Blenheim District Court on the 15/01/14.
Restaurant burglary At 2:25am last night a 19-year-old unemployed male was arrested on
Kinross street for burglary. The male was trying to leave the area after breaking in the Gramados Restaurant outdoor chiller, taking two bottles of wine.
Home detention On Monday Police assisted probation staff to arrest a 52-year-old Blenheim male currently on Home detention for breaching the conditions of his home detention. He was taken to the Blenheim District Court where he was bailed to re appear on the 13/01/14.
Breach of bail At 4:41pm on Monday a 19-year-old male landscape gardener was arrested for breaching his bail.
Held for detox At 1:35am yesterday morning a 34-year-old unemployed male was taken into custody for detox after he was found on Charles Street unable to say where he was or going. He was released when sober and could remember where he lived.
A spokesperson from Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter said the men were “extremely lucky to survive”. Marlborough Police have indicated speed may have been a factor though an investigation was currently under way.
Diesel theft At 4:45am yesterday morning an 18-year-old unemployed male was arrested in Alma Street, Renwick for theft of diesel from a truck parked in front of the owner’s address.
Incidents: A house on Taylor Pass Road was broken into and prescription medicine taken sometime on December 13. Overnight on December 14 the padlock on a refrigerated container at Drylands Winery was cut and access was gained to the container. It is unknown at this stage what was taken. An outboard motor was taken off a boat parked on a rural property near Okaramio. The boat was not visible from the road. Picton Police are holding an unusual item which may be moonstone/agate/ glass. It is multi-coloured and may well be someone’s ‘treasure’. If you think it might be yours can you please contact Mary at the Picton Police Station.

A drink-driver with a 15-month-old baby in the car was just one of the offences local police came across during a large-scale alcohol crackdown on the weekend. Police across Tasman District, which includes Nelson Bays, Marlborough and the West Coast, caught 15 drink-drivers after breath-testing close to 7000 motorists over Friday and Saturday nights as part of Operation Unite, which ran throughout New Zealand and Australia. As a result, 15 drivers were found driving in excess of the legal breath alcohol level. One had a baby in the vehicle, while another stopped near Kaikoura was almost double the legal limit after driving all the way from Christchurch. In addition, a large number of people were detected driving in excess of 250
mcg, which is the new breath alcohol level proposed to be introduced next year. The Australasian Operation Unite was combined in Tasman with another road policing operation focused on country roads. Operation Unite targeted all alcoholrelated offending and police paid particular attention to licensed premises. Across the district 91 compliance checks were made on bars and off licences, along with a further 65 controlled purchase operations to check whether licensees would sell alcohol to a minor. Four on licences failed the controlled purchase operation. Seven people were arrested for breaching liquor bans and another 27 received warnings.
A further 22 people were arrested for violence and public order offences. Operation Commander Inspector Jenni Richardson said it was disappointing so many people were still getting intoxicated and ending up either offending or becoming victims. In total about 140 police were out on the streets and roads over the two nights Inspector Richardson said police would remain focused on road policing and alcohol related issues in the coming weeks. “We trying to send a very clear message to people out socialising at this time of year that they need to make some good choices about the amount of alcohol they consume and their transport options. “Drinking and then driving is not an option and you will get stopped.”

All the time and it is drivers of all ages. It makes me worry because I’ve got a baby in the car with me.
Very often. It’s more older people, because young people are more subtle about it. I don’t dob them in, I let karma catch up to them.
I seldom see it now. I believe there is more awareness about it and also people are taking more responsibility for their driving.
A lot. I walk at night and every time I see at least one or two.
Quite often. It happens more than it should and I believe the police need to conduct more enforcement in that area.

Marlborough 4 Fun hits back Dear Ed, To the author of recent letters, it is a shame you haven’t put your name to your comments. With so much information wrong, it would be nice to be able to reply fully in person. The A & P show, we are contracted to organise aspects, which were very successful. The show is held at this dateline due to A & P rules that date back 140 years. Garden Marlborough we don’t organise. Christmas Parade and Mistletoe market was at the request of council to join forces and we worked well together to bring a fantastic festival day for all. We have received so many positive comments about it. We have no ruling over when people hold their events or don’t – our job is in event organisation. “When will you get things right?” shows how little you know of what Marlborough 4 Fun actually does. We have a contract with MDC to provide events for the community and the event guide and we also organise other groups’ events. All events are well organised, attract good attendance and are enjoyed by thousands of people in the community. Katrina Lange, CEO, Marlborough 4 Fun

Mandela light in a dark world Dear Ed, The collective global voice is united around the achievements of Mandela. His life shines as a beacon of light. His suffering and sacrifice and unwavering stand for the truth, civil rights and justice are cloaked with 27 years of hard labour where hope triumphed. As his long years of imprisonment on Robbin Island ended there was no bitterness only love, forgiveness and reconciliation. He avoided what could have easliy been an African bloodbath. After 150
years of apartheid love conquers all. We celebrate him as we do Ghandi and Martin Luther King for their selflessness and love for their fellow troubled human neighbours. Their non-violent stand for human dignity and the understanding all are created equal from the Sermon on the Mount Matt.5 and one man on one tree on one Friday. Three & More Wise Men? Dear Ed, Our three wise Sounds councillors (at least) have given you a present you will never forget and one to bring out the Ho Ho Ho in even the most ardent critic of the Season to be Jolly. Jolly grateful we are about to commission, open, stand in or under a brand new “relocatable” and hugely needed bus stop outside the now secretly hidden iSite in Picton. And for the paltry price of only $160,000 of OPM (Other People’s Money)... You know, the sort public officials used to spend in the good old days when things were aplenty and life was good to all. Well here it is folks in all its glory reaching skyward so as not to be missed by any traveller disembarking the ferry (let’s not go there on that one prop story) and standing in a perfectly good bus stop not 100m away. If all this sounds like Santa has been a busy boy you may be right. Then again we have never been sure who paid for Santa’s presents but I am damn certain who paid for this! I guess the Beehive is relocatable if need be so this edifice ought to be a piece of cake to move about when the need arises. Perhaps we could flog it off later to Len Brown as a “destination” He seems to have the sort of sense of humour I’m lacking right now. Merry Xmas and if you are looking for a place to camp I understand the iSite take bookings for this spot. Foreshore, close to town, sheltered...this list goes on. Help me find a Ho Ho Ho

Dear Ed, I recently went to see The Jungle Book live show with the dancing groups here in Marlborough. I came away absolutely thrilled to bits with the production. I can’t believe that nobody has written to you at the paper about the talent we have here in Marlborough and the teachers that teach the dancers. Those little children were a delight to watch.
I must give thanks for the work behind the scenes, stage settings, costumes, etc. How many hours would go into the making of so many costumes, and we never ever get to see or hear who did all the work. The lighting was superb and the senior dancers, as always, were a class of their own. I am already looking forward to next year’s production. Happy pensioner

Yacht fire in Sounds A man was treated for smoke inhalation on Friday morning after a fire aboard a privately owned yacht in Bay of Many Coves in the Marlborough Sounds. Husband and wife Jonathan and Gabbie Lyne, from the UK, managed to escape the blaze aboard their 16-metre yacht Aqualuna with nothing but the clothes they were wearing at the time. Mr Lyne, in his early 60’s, suffered smoke inhalation and was
treated close to the scene by St John paramedics before being transported back to Picton by Coastguard Marlborough. He was then transferred by ambulance to Wairau Hospital in a stable condition. Picton ambulance station manager Tony Cronin said the incident demonstrated a team effort by firefighters, paramedics and coastguard, who often work closely together.

Christmas concert with a difference The Flutterbyes, a “sign singing” group of five deaf and partially deaf members, are presenting a Christmas concert in Picton on Thursday December 19. They are performing at the RSA clubrooms at 5.30pm. Their leader is Hilary Foister, who spends six months in Picton each summer. Her other home is on the Isle of Wight, where she also works with sign singing in Britain. It is about eight years since she went along to a meeting of the Hearing Association Marlborough, whose members meet at the Barnadoes rooms every three or four months.
“I convinced them to give it a go,” she said. Their concert will include 12 pieces of Christmas music and is their final concert for the year. They have also recently presented it to Hospice Marlborough and to the 50+ singing group. All members bar one are totally deaf says member Wayne West. “But we can feel the music.” Mostly however, they watch Hilary, who also plays a CD, for the benefit of the hearing audience. The Flutterbyes are keen to encourage others who are deaf to participate, said Wayne.
By Kristy Martin Santa took time out from his busy schedule to visit Marlborough at the weekend and participate in the Ulysses Club’s annual toy run. Showing off his three-wheeler Can-Am Spyder, Father Christmas joined 150 other motorcyclists in riding from Renwick to Blenheim in aid of the Salvation Army’s Christmas toy appeal. The ride took place in sweltering summer heat, putting Santa, aka Kelvin Watson, out of his comfort
zone. “It was minus 40C when I left the North Pole this morning,” he laughed, but added that he was more than happy to carry out the festive duties. Each motorcyclist donated a gift for the toy appeal. Event organiser Megan Trilford thanked all riders, who were both locals and out-of-towners from places like Nelson, West Coast and down south. “We even had a couple from
Keep our beaches clean By Kristy Martin The Department of Conservation is urging people to refrain from leaving rubbish on local beaches after staff conducted a big clean-up last week. DOC workers did a beach sweep on Friday between White Bluffs and Rarangi through to Port Underwood and the rubbish collected included marine farming debris, recreational garbage, plastic bottles and alcohol containers and a few jandals. Roy Grose, DOC Sounds district
manager, said the beach sweep involved about 30 staff from both the South Marlborough and Sounds offices as part of their Christmas gathering. “We like to do something that gives back to the community each year,” he said. “Between Hakahaka Bay and Whites Bay we collected a uteload of rubbish, at Robin Hood Bay we found a lot of smashed and empty beer bottles. “It is not fair for people to leave rubbish around like that.

Cromwell on their honeymoon.” She said it the toy haul was a small thing that motorcyclists could do for families who otherwise had very little. “We are lucky that we can afford to have bikes and get them registered and go for rides. “These people have nothing.” People can still donate to the toy appeal by dropping gifts at the Salvation Army rooms on the corner of George and Henry streets or at the Scott Street store.
“Kids can cut their feet when walking on the sand. “We also had some vandalism at Tom Canes Bay, where people had had a fire and cut down one of the DOC signs. “We found a lot of smashed glass there, so we are following that up with the police.” Mr Grose said people were not supposed to be lighting fires, as local restrictions had come into place. He also asked that people stick to designated camping areas.

Banter with Santa Santa Claus, the big man in red, travels to Blenheim for his annual chat with Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk. I was really surprised when Santa arrived late on Monday evening. He had emailed me earlier in the day to ask if we could meet at 9pm at the Sun office, so off I went with a plate of freshly baked cinnamon cookies to snack on while we chatted. He was already waiting when I arrived. This year he only had a very basic sleigh with him, pulled by Comet and Prancer and was sitting casually behind the Sun building. It’s hard not to stare in awe of Santa as he grins and lets out a full-bellied laugh. “Well, are we going in or do you want to interview me out here?” he joked. As usual Santa heads straight for the editor’s desk and sits heavily into the padded chair, rests his feet on the corner of the desk and relaxes his arms over his round belly. I smile to myself, wondering what Les Whiteside would say if he saw Santa making himself right at home in his office. As if reading my thoughts, Santa pipes up; “Oh Les won’t mind, I always leave him something in his top drawer,” he chuckles. “So Santa how are all your preparations coming along? Are your elves on track?” “Actually yes we are this year. In fact, we are ahead of schedule by 54 minutes which means I might be able to make a few extra stops on Christmas Eve. There are some families out in Seddon who I think would appreciate an extra wee gift under the tree after what they have been through with the earthquakes,” he grinned. “Yes it has been an eventful year for Marlborough but it seems to bring out the best in people. Our community always supports those in need which is something that makes our region
unique, would you agree Santa?” “Ho ho, throughout my travels I would say Marlborough is one of the most special indeed. “I was pleased to see my old friend Alistair Sowman re-elected, but I was disappointed he didn’t offer me the deputy position. “Over the years he has often asked my advice on different issues so I think I would have made a mighty fine deputy mayor. “Perhaps it was the red outfit and overgrown facial hair that changed his mind. It hardly fits in with the suit and tie image,” Santa laughs while slapping his leg. “Well, time’s up for me Celeste, I really must head back and make sure the elves aren’t slacking off. They have a tendency to get a little too ‘merry’ when I am away.” Santa stands up, stretches his arms above his head and gives a little yawn. He hands me an envelope with a parking ticket and a cheque written out to Marlborough Roads. “I don’t know why the parking wardens insist on me paying for parking. “Every time I visit Blenheim I seem to be ticketed. Apparently sleighs need to be registered and warranted if they want to be parked on public roads,” Santa grumped. Off out the door he trudged and climbed up onto the sleigh. With a flick of the reins Comet and Prancer leap into life and pull him high above the buildings. “Merry Christmas Marlborough, I will visit again real soon,” he waved.

Xmas appeal a huge success
Winners of the Marlborough Lines Tertiary Awards were Danielle Pope and Nerys Udy from Marlborough Girls' College (front left), Muske Hertoghs and Moana Dixon from Queen Charlotte College (in green), Ashton Blake-Barlow and Hamish Hayes from Marlborough Boys' College (back right) and Robert Blankendaal (centre) from Rai Valley School.
Cash boost to aid tertiary studies Seven secondary students have received a share of $24,000 from Marlborough Lines to assist with their studies at tertiary level. The dux and proxime accessit of both Marlborough boys’ and girls’ colleges and Queen Charlotte College have each taken a slice of the cash along with one student from Rai Valley Area School. The students were presented with their 2013 Marlborough Lines 2013 Tertiary Study Awards by company chairman David Dew at a ceremony at the Scenic Hotel in Blenheim last
week. The scholarship recipients are decided by the schools themselves, independently of Marlborough Lines. T h is yea r’s recipients were Marlborough Boys’ College dux Hamish Hayes, who will go on to study a Bachelor of Engineering at Canterbury University and proxime accessit Ashton Blake-Barlow, who plans to study Health Sciences at Otago University. Marlborough Girls’ College dux Nerys Udy will use her cash boost when she heads off to study per-
Hundreds of toys have been collected for local families in need, who will now be able to enjoy a more memorable Christmas. The Open Home Foundation’s Christmas appeal has wrapped up and staff want to say a huge thank you to everybody who donated toys at the Sun newspaper office. “It’s a little bit of wow,” said OHF Marlborough practice manager Jennifer Bennett-Burrows, who first laid eyes on the mountains of gifts on Monday. “The awesomeness of our community continues to shine on,” said her colleague Liz Furness. “We are very, very grateful.” Ms Furness added that many local families used the appeal to teach their children about the value of giving. “A lot of families use this as an opportunity to set an example for their children, which is a great lesson.” The gifts were collected on Monday and will be sorted and sent out to local foster families and families in need in the coming days.
forming arts at either Oxford or Cambridge and proxime accessit Danielle Pope will put hers toward her upcoming heath sciences studies at Otago University. Also receiving scholarships were Muske Hertoghs (dux) and Moana Dixon of Queen Charlotte College, who both hope to study English and English Literature at Victoria University following a gap year, and Robert Blankendaal of Rai Valley who will be doing a chef course at NMIT in Nelson.
QCC honours retiring teacher By Glenise Dreaver Alistair Boyce, retiring deputy principal of Queen Charlotte College, gave very clear instructions about his attendance at the final prizegiving. His wish was to leave “without a ripple”. “The prizegiving is for the leavers,” he had told principal Tom Parsons, who agreed. “Anyone who has been here for thirty eight years has the right to call the tune, “ Mr Parsons told the full school hall. However he said, there had been
some “ incredible subterfuge” about the latter part of the ceremony, “because Alistair Boyce had his finger in every pie. And he knew which corner to cover before anyone even started to smoke.” It was Kate Overend who had the honour of receiving the inaugural Alistair Boyce Trophy for Aspiring Leaders. It was awarded for her leadership across a wide variety of school activities, Mr Parsons said. Mr Boyce, “Bob Dylan’s biggest fan” was also honoured in music, with a slightly adapted group rendition of
“To make you feel our love”. There was also a rousing haka led by Moana Dixon and the presentation of a taonga by Trevor Hook, chair of the board of trustees. These were followed by a standing ovation for a visibly moved Mr Boyce. There was loud applause on the announcement of Leon Bristow as head boy, and Tamsin Woolf as head girl for 2014. Proxime Accessit for 2013 was Moana Dixon and Dux was Muske Hertoghs. They were given a standing ovation.

Christmas message from Mayor Christmas time reminds us of the blessings of living in Marlborough, and for most of us it’s a chance to relax and enjoy our lovely part of the world. I know that, after a busy election year, I will be enjoying this break. I’m proud of the way everyone has coped with the challenges of the Awatere earthquakes; it’s not been an easy time for those most directly affected and I ask everyone to continue to be supportive wherever possible. A warm welcome to the many visitors who will be in Marlborough in coming weeks; loved ones returning home and holidaymakers discovering our piece of paradise. Have a safe and enjoyable visit, there is no better place to spend your summer! A special thanks to those who will be working this Christmas Day; the emergency services, the staff of our hospitals and homes for the elderly, all who keep our essential services going. May we all remember too that even a small kindness can help to make this a memorable Christmas for those who have little. Thelma and I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and our best wishes for a healthy, happy and rewarding New Year.

The Blenheim Salvation Army has a local vision that we live to Love God, Love our Neighbours and Serve the World. This is based on two pieces of scripture in Matthew 22 verses 37 to 39 and James 2 verses 14 to 17.
Trust Deed Review
We at the Blenheim Salvation Army would just like to say, “What an awesome community we belong to!” We would like to thank you all for the ongoing support throughout the year.
We especially want to mention Duncan and his staff at Top Town Cinemas. Each year they host the Watties Cans Festival. Duncan makes the cinema available and puts on a good selection of movies and people come along and see a movie for a can of food. This year Blenheim donated over 700 cans of food for the food bank. This was the second highest number of cans collected in the South Island during the Cans Festival. We prayer blessing and protection for each of you over Christmas and New Year and look forward to working with you again in 2014. God Bless.

Fresh from an impressive sixth Place in Starling Class at the Sir Peter Blake Regatta in Auckland, Callum Radford proved his helmsmanship skills yet again by scooping up first place in the South Island Starling Champs held recently at Naval Point Yacht Club in his boat “Lethal Weapon”. Callum and four other Queen Charlotte Yacht Club starling sailors travelled south to the Championships sailed in Lyttleton Harbour in light to moderate winds. In a field of 21 yachts, the five youth sailors, who have all come up through the ranks of Optimist sailing at Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, competed well in the two day regatta. Callum finished the regatta four points ahead of his nearest rival, with Nick Gardiner earning a worthy fourth place after a consistent performance, Iolo Adams coming in at sixth, Nico van Beek, ninth and Alice Overend sailing in her Starling for only the third time coming in at 15th after five completed races. Now in his third season sailing starling, Callum’s expertise in reading wind shifts and tides, helped him stay at the front on the pack and fend off challengers proving that he and his boat truly are a Lethal Weapon in sailing. Other sailors travelled from as far afield as Wanaka and Timaru to attend the championships.

The DHL Speedweek Series attracted the best saloon drivers throughout the country to travel the mainland circuit over nine days. Photo by eduardart.com.
Local competitors enjoy Speedweek Story by Darrell Bate A journey stretching nearly 2000km, involving Marlborough saloon drivers Paddy North and Paul Cambie, has come to an end after nine days on the road. The annual DHL Speedweek Saloon Series for 2013 ended at Ashburton Speedway on Saturday beginning in Blenheim on Friday December 6 before visiting Christchurch, Invercargill, Dunedin and Cromwell tracks also. Greymouth too was scheduled for round three but unfortunately rained out reducing
the series to six events. North was a new face in the series this year and although very experienced with his involvement in speedway; had never raced in the saloon class until now. “We had talked about wanting to do this series for the past couple of years and after discussion with my Super Saloon builder, John Lovelady we decided to give it a go this year,” said Paddy. With 22 entrants, North was happy placing fourth overall in the series and finishing every one of the 24 races over the six venues
with consistency throughout being the key. Luck was not on the side of Paul Cambie though as he suffered crankshaft failure in Dunedin, unable to collect points by competing in the final two rounds. Having the experience of Speedweek now under his belt, North has expressed his interest in running in the series again next season. “It is just a great bunch of people; you make a lot of friendships and enjoy some awesome racing at the same time.”

40 yachts to enter regatta Story and photo supplied The upcoming Lawson’s Dry Hills New Year Regatta is being held a week earlier than in previous years. Racing will take place from January 3-5 next year, attracting lots of boaties already in the Marlborough Sounds on holiday. The Waikawa Boating Club, who run the event every year, expect over 40 yachts to enter, with cash prizes of up to $1500 up for grabs, as well as plenty of Lawson’s Dry Hills wine. Short-form ‘round-the-marker’ races provide thrilling viewing, and longer ‘round-the-harbour’ races take yachts and their crews into the
outer Sounds and back. This summer will mark the 6th consecutive year the New Year Regatta is supported by Lawson’s Dry Hills Winery. A jam-packed social programme means there’s plenty of action off the water as well. For the first time, those partners and supporters not racing are invited to enjoy some of the best holiday attractions Marlborough has to offer – including a wine tour and a day with Dolphin Watch Eco Tours in the Sounds. The real heart of the weekend regatta will be at the clubhouse where returning skippers and crews will join Waikawa locals every even-
ing from Thursday through to Sunday’s prizegiving party. The Waikawa Boating Club is keen to welcome visitors – both locals and holidaymakers - to the clubhouse to enjoy the buzz. “The best place to view the racing is out at Karaka Point,” said club manager Sue van Velzen. “And then from 4pm on, everyone can make themselves at home on the clubroom deck and watch the returning boats. “Food will be served from 4.30pm and the bar will be open right into the evening.” If you want to join a crew for the racing, email wbcsailing@xtra. co.nz
