Fireworks in Blenheim and Picton

By Kristy Martin New Year’s Eve is set to go off with a double bang this year, as Ignite Marlborough for the first time puts on fireworks displays at both Blenheim and Picton. Celebrations will kick off at 8pm Tuesday on the Picton foreshore and at Liz Davidson Place in Blenheim, with an array of musical acts set to dazzle the crowds at both locations. When the clock strikes midnight, fireworks will burst into the sky from a barge at Picton and, for the first time, from the top of the Alfred Street parking building in Blenheim. Continued page 2

You might be surprised to find giant eskimos, jet planes and pineapple lumps on the Waikawa foreshore tomorrow. The iconic Pascall New Zealand lollies are bringing their ‘Candy Carnival Sweet Stops’ to towns across the country and the Picton region is next on the list. These events encourage families to stop, rest and revive by taking a break, playing carnival games and eating the candy. At the Candy Carnival Sweet Stop, from 11am-3pm tomorrow, families can fish for eskimos, play Pineapple Shy and throw hoops over the milk bottles to win family packs, or just take a break from the heavy holiday traffic.

Quad bike accident A girl was transported to Wairau Hospital suffering head injuries after a quad bike accident in the Marlborough Sounds on Sunday. At 12:30pm Life Flight responded in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with a Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedic onboard. The helicopter was able to land nearby the patient’s location. The girl, who had been on the back of the bike, was assessed and treated by the paramedic and then flown to the Wairau Hospital Emergency department for further treatment.

Correction Spring Creek School principal Andrew McFarlane is heading to Wellington to take up the position of principal at Kelburn Normal School, not deputy principal as was reported last week. The Sun apologises for this error.

Fireworks will for the first time light up both Blenheim and Picton on New Year's Eve.

Fireworks in Blenheim and Picton Continued from page 1 “This is the first time we’ve had fireworks in both towns simultaneously and that is thanks to our local fireworks guru Kelvin Holdaway,” said Duncan Mackenzie, event organiser. “For anyone who doesn’t think we need a carparking building in Blenheim, well at least it will make a great launch pad for the fireworks,” he joked. Mr Mackenzie said while Picton was traditionally the main event, both would feature “four hours of really great music and dancing” in the lead up to the 2014 countdown. Picton’s lineup includes solo artist Midge McCleary, One False Move, fronted by Marlborough’s Top Talent winner Emma Logan and local favourites the Chilli Dogs. Blenheim will play host to country music sets, featuring Toni Williams, and a Pasifika music celebration. Mr Mackenzie encouraged families to bring

their own chairs, blankets, rugs and picnic hampers, but stressed that these were alcoholfree events. However, there was nothing to stop adults from heading over to any of the local bars and having a drink. Road closures will include Wellington Street and part of London Quay in Picton and Queen Street and a section of Charles Street in Blenheim. Mr Mackenzie said security staff would be on-hand to ensure families have a safe and comfortable environment to see out the end of 2013 and ring in the New Year. He said about 15,000 people attended the Picton event in 2012 and police reported minimal trouble. “I’d love it if it was exactly the same as last year. “It was a great time for everybody.”

Research in NZ and overseas has shown that modified machine harvesters used between fruit set and veraison can successfully reduce potential crop, whilst promoting trash removal and reduced incidence of Botrytis at harvest. This NZ research, conducted by Plant and Food, is funded by NZ Winegrowers and SSF (MPI). There is significant interest by growers already carrying out field trials on their own blocks this season.

If you’re on the road, you will be tested Story and photo by Kristy Martin Every driver stopped by police over the New Year period will be breath tested. This was the message from Marlborough Police as people get set to ring in 2014 at New Year’s Eve events across the region. Sergeant Barrie Greenall, team leader at Marlborough Highway Patrol, said extra police would be out on the roads monitoring the increased traffic over this busy time, and that their focus would be on the ‘Fatal Five’ – drink-driving, speeding, seatbelts, high risk drivers and fatigued/ distracted drivers. It was important for people to realise that if they were going to drink alcohol into the wee hours of the morning on New Year’s Day they would still be affected later on, he said. “We particularly want to put that out to drivers under 20, who must remember they still have to have zero blood alcohol concentration the next day if they are going to drive. “We’d like to remind parents, as well, to impress on young drivers that even if they feel good and fine, they probably shouldn’t be driving until at least late evening on New Year’s Day.” Sgt Greenall said holidaymakers who had long distances to drive should allow extra time to get to their destinations, as there would be more traffic on the roads and also slower traffic, with people towing boats and caravans. He advised drivers to take regular breaks, even if it was just stopping to grab a coffee

Blenheim community constable Russ Smith says police will be out in force this holiday season with a focus on drink-driving and general road safety.

and stretch their legs. He also advised motorists towing caravans or drivers to slow down and let people pass on straight sections of road. “We find that these drivers will slow right down on the winding roads until there is a big queue of traffic behind them and

Police inbrief Weekend arrests

Over the weekend Marlborough Police staff arrested 29 men and woman for a variety of offenses. Over half were arrested for either fighting in a public place or disorderly behaviour. The majority of this lot received pre-charge warnings and were released when sober. A further three were arrested on warrant or for breaching their bail conditions.

They were held in custody and have now appeared before the Court.

Smashing spree In the early hours of Sunday morning a 17-year-old unemployed male was arrested in Market Street after he smashed two windows in two different shops in the CBD. He was held in custody until sober and bailed to appear in the Blenheim District Court on January 7, 2014.

then when they hit a straight patch, they think they are doing everybody a favour by putting their foot down. “They aren’t. “They are better off keeping slow, moving to the left, putting their indicator on and letting everybody else pass them.”

Cannabis crop On Sunday a 53-yearold male was arrested for cultivating cannabis, possession of cannabis and possession of cannabis utensils. He was bailed to appear in the Blenheim District Court on January 13, 2014.

House destroyed, firefighters injured in blaze By Celeste Lodewyk It was a close call for firefighters and holiday goers when a bushfire took hold in Flagg Bay, at the top end of Port Underwood on Saturday. Principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara told the Sun a tree had come down on a powerline after high winds hit the area. When the first fire appliance arrived fire had already taken hold in the roof cavity of a holiday home. The fire then completely destroyed the home and a number of outbuildings, he said. Two firefighters were injured fighting the spreading fire, a 21-year-old male suffered smoke inhalation and a 50-yearold male suffered bruised ribs. They were attended to by a medic on board the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter which was called to respond

to the scene of the fire around 4:45pm. While the medic was making his assessment of the men, the rescue helicopter was further tasked by Rural Fire to undertake an aerial sweep of the beach frontage below the fire, looking for unaccounted residents. None were located and the helicopter uplifted and transported the two injured firefighters to Wairau Hospital Emergency Department where they were admitted for observation and later discharged. Mr McNamara said it was fortunate there were no serious injuries or worse, and extended some fire safety advice to holiday goers. “We are moving into a high alert for fire danger at a time when our resources are stretched and many of our volunteer firefighters are on

holiday with their families. “We want people to be safe and enjoy the good weather while being careful with fire. It can be a good friend by heating our homes and barbecues, but fire can be brutal.

“We don’t want to be responding to more of these events where properties and people are threatened and our own firefighters are put at risk, so be careful these holidays,” he said.

What is your favourite food? It’s tough to single out just one thing....but I guess I do have a particularly soft spot for good cheese. What makes you smile? My lovely little children, Austin (6) and Genevieve (3), they are really hilarious and cheeky... There is no shortage of conversation when they are around. What’s your pet hate? Silly I know, but I can’t stand white clothing being washed with coloured clothes. If I wanted a grey t-shirt then I would have bought one. Mum is a washing nerd, and she’s passed on this trait on to me!

Q A Q A Q A

Your favoured holiday destination? Sicily is hard to beat, though it wasn’t until I lived away that I appreciated how lucky we are to have the Marlborough Sounds on our doorstep. What’s your favourite music? Without hesitation, David Bowie, (aka “Den”)...the man...the legend! What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you? I’ve mountain biked “The World’s Most Dangerous Road” La Paz to Coroico, Bolivia. I was completely petrified and had cramp in my hands for two days from using the breaks so much.

Precious Things

Q A Q A Q A

Who would you invite to dinner? My husband Tim, David Bowie, family and friends near and far away. With all that going on I certainly won’t be interested in cooking, so also an amazing chef to feed us all. What’s next on your wish list? My business partner Miranda and I want to focus on growing the Educarents Marlborough service both here in Marlborough and beyond the region in 2014. A saying you like to live by? He who hesitates is lost!

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: Was it time for National Party MP Colin King to go?

McCormick & Co Jewellers Discovering jewellery with Pamela McCormick

What’s so special about being a Diamond Broker?

It allows us to provide a unique service to our customers. When buying a diamond from a jeweller or jewellery chain in NZ you get a very limited range of stones to choose from plus you pay the costs of the wholesaler (or ‘middle man’).

Buying diamonds in Antwerp we get to look through packets and Ray McCormick selecting diamonds in packets of diamonds choosing exactly Antwerp for customers in Marlborough what our customers have asked for, including the price range they wish. We don’t just go to one seller, we visit three and they also have access to independent sellers for something unique. It’s hard work and it’s tiring but incredibly rewarding to make someone’s desire become a reality. We’ve been doing this for over five years now and to prepare ourselves we passed the Diamond Grading Certificate from the GAA (Gemmologists Assn of Australia) who certifies both NZ & Australia. Our manager also holds this certificate.

He’s been the MP for a long time and I don’t have an issue with him, but I’m more interested in council polictics. I don’t approve of the council spending.

I’m not a very political person, but I think it’s a shame he was pushed sideways like that. It could have been handled better.

It doesn’t worry me, but he did seem to be a bit of a silent partner in the whole thing. We need someone proactive but not someone who has tunnel vision and is only interested in grapes.

Why do we do this? Because we want to bring the best to Marlborough! ...... which brings me to something else. It’s been a funny old year and I think we’ve all felt the uncertainty of where the province was heading. However with Clifford Bay sorted, we have the chance to seize the new day! We can build on the enthusiasm and positive feelings that this certainty engenders. No district survives without a thriving business community. Businesses need to be providing the very best for Marlborough and the response to this must be for you to shop locally whenever you can and give your retail community the opportunity to meet your needs. It is said that money spent in locally owned businesses does the rounds at least five times and this has to better for us all! (Not to mention the job opportunities.) We will be buying Diamonds from Antwerp again in March 2014 Call us today and find out just what we are able to do for you.

Captive-bred falcon chicks released The Marlborough Falcon Trust (MFT), in conjunction with Brancott Estate, has finally realised its long held dream of releasing captive bred falcons. The two female chicks were released on a carefully selected, predator-free Waihopai Valley property last week. “This is a culmination of six years hard work by the Trust, and it is important to recognise that this achievement could not have occurred without long term supporters such as Brancott Estate, who have partnered with the Trust since 2010, and the Department of Conservation,” said trustee Heath Stafford. “Many local businesses and volunteers contributed time, skills and passion to this project and we sincerely thank them and the Marlborough children who through our schools programme provide the inspiration for the MFT to continue.” The two 51-day-old female chicks got to

very strict criteria and found to be predatorfree in an isolated area with plentiful food supply, critical to the birds’ survival. ‘Flight’ named by Patrick Materman, chief winemaker for Brancott Estate, lived up to her name. Once the windows were open she immediately took flight over the valley to perch from a tree. Mr Materman said $1 from every bottle of Brancott Estate Living Land wine purchased goes to the Living Land Fund which has enabled the breeding aviary to be built on Brancott Vineyard. “To date we have donated over $295,000 and everyone is absolutely delighted with this first chick release of these two endangered Falcons. ‘Pioneer’ named by MFT was slightly more hesitant than her sister requiring some encouragement from aviary assistant Adam Manawatu, before she too soared across the open fields.

Valuable fundraising efforts

Dear Ed, The Rotary Club of Picton raised over $700 in less than two weeks to support the youth of Picton in their pursuit of excellence. We are delighted with this generous giving and we know that we have a healthy fund available for those who need a little financial boost to help realise their dreams. We sincerely thank our four sponsors in this fundraiser: Russel “Captain Adventure” Read,

ITM, Challenge Petrol Station Picton and Picton’s own 4 Square Market. Their willing and creative prizes made this raffle one to give everyone who participated a bright picture of their hoped-for win. Those who did win were Vicki Weetman, 1st prize; Sandra Bunt, 2nd, Ailie Suzuki, 3rd and Murray Brerenton, 4th. We wish you a very special Merry Christmas, and to our community a basket of holiday cheer.

Dear Ed, I have read several items about smoking and effect on lungs in your paper recently. I know what these people are going through as my wife is suffering the effects of smoking in the workplace and she did not add to it.

The air could be cut with a knife if you were able to find one in a smoke filled room. The Government needs to make a New Year’s resolution to ban the sale of tobacco products but they like the tax they get and the same goes for the liquor industry. If some products were banned,

we would no doubt find people would seek alternatives which would be more harmful than the legal products of today so we need to find ways to educate people to look after their health and others for many generations to come. Mark Reid

out & about The Marlborough Artisan Market, usually found on Wynen Street on Saturdays, was held on the evening of December 19 so people could do some last-minute Christmas shopping.

Wrapping up the year Phil Campbell from Stonewood Homes got an unexpected surprise when he discovered his car had been completely wrapped in glad wrap last week. He wasn't sure who had done it, but judging by the sound of his sniggering workmates, the culprit wasn't far away.

 Hilary de Bruyn and Mie ke from Renwick were feeling de Bruyn, 11, a little chilly.

 Meeting up with Santa (aka Dave Oliver) on her sixth birthday, Keira Arbuckle told him she wanted a Barbie. She’s pictured with sister Paige, 9, and brother DJ, 8.

School’s out, time for fun School’s out for summer and the kids are jumping for joy at the prospect of being home with no school routine. But what about you? Having a house full of bored or squabbling kids is enough to make anyone want to tear their hair out. There are lots of ways to make sure your kids have a decent break. Here are some suggestions. - As soon as the holidays start, set aside a time when you can sit and talk about the holidays, and find out what activities and outings they would like to enjoy. - Choose one thing to focus on

each day. It could be an activity like going swimming or to the park, or visiting local museums and markets. - Remember the food! It may sound obvious, but it’s easy to forget how easily kids’ moods are very affected highs and lows in blood sugar levels. Children get grumpy or lethargic very quickly if they haven’t eaten properly which can lead to bad behaviour and irritability. Sticking to routines for mealtimes and having relatively healthy snacks can and keep them more in balance. - Be sociable. A new face can

bring in a breath of fresh air, which can be especially welcome when you’re all feeling a bit stircrazy. Inviting someone around or visiting other families will change the dynamics instantly. - Do something out of the ordinary. Set up a campsite in the living room, get a can of paint and get the kids involved in painting a wall or even baking in the kitchen. The novelty of doing something different, no matter how small, can be enough to change moods all around. Distraction really can work wonders when kids are bored or fighting.

By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough Museum is adding some final touches to a new exhibition this week titled ‘Wild Things’. Museum Chief Executive Steve Austin said that the exhibition was inspired by the 19th century collecting carried out by Sir David Monro, (who has a number of plants named after him), and is set in a colonial naturalist’s study. The exhibition will have more items and information added in the New Year, but it has been all stops out to get something fun and interesting open before Christmas. Also at the Museum is a ‘Wine Exhibition’; “The best in Australasia”, according to Steve. “We also have our Wairau Bar Exhibition, a significant site in the archaeology of Marlborough and Pacific, as well as our Victorian Rooms which provide a fascinating insight into how European settler families lived over 100 years ago,” he said. The Museum will be open free of charge until the end of the year. There is also a live Victorian Christmas tree (decorated by Pam Saunders, Bev Webb and guided by guest stylist Pat Parkinson) which will be on view until December 31.

Stay cool and hydrated this summer and avoid heat exhaustion as temperatures rise. As families flock to the rivers and beaches this summer, the risk of sun overexposure increases and people could find themselves suffering from heat stroke. Heat stroke, also known as sunstroke, is a serious medical condition which can also become a medical emergency when the body’s temperature rises too high as a result of excessive heat exposure. When a person’s body temperature is greater than 40.6°C caused by environmental heat exposure with poor thermoregulation (temperature control), they have heat stroke. There are three levels of heat emergencies - heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, with heat stroke being the most severe and life-threatening. What are the signs and symptoms of heat stroke? What is the difference between a sign and a symptom? A symptom is felt by the patient and described to those around him or her, for example, pain. A sign can be detected by others, for example, a skin rash. Unlike the symptoms of heat exhaustion, which can develop rapidly, heat stroke signs and symptoms generally develop over several days, especially among elderly individuals and people with chronic health problems. Heatstroke can develop rapidly in severe conditions and situations with extreme physical exertion (exertional heatstroke), especially if the person becomes dehydrated. Exertional heat stroke tends to affect young, physically active people more than sedentary or older individuals. The signs and symptoms of heat stroke may include: • A high temperature • Heat stroke may be diagnosed at lower temperatures. Also, some people may reach these temperatures and never develop heatstroke. • Profuse sweating that abruptly stops, when the body cannot sweat any more,

Swimmer’s ear Ear care is especially important during the summer months when heat and humidity can fuel the growth of the bacteria and fungi that can cause swimmer’s ear. To prevent water from getting stuck in the ear canal, dry your ears thoroughly after swimming or showering. To do this, use a towel. Tilt your head so one ear faces down to allow water to escape the ear canal.

FREE, NO OBLIGATION

Then gently pull your ear lobe in several directions to help the water drain out. If the water is still stuck, you can use a hair dryer to remove it, Keep the dryer on the lowest heat setting and hold it several inches away from your head. And, never stick a cotton swab or other object in your ear. Leave the ear wax alone it protects the lining of the ear from infections such as swimmer’s ear.

Black beauty Not content with one Jaguar, the C-Type he built himself, Rae Fairweather also owns a 1956 2.4 Litre Jaguar MK1. By Belinda Jackson Announced on 28 September 1955, the 2.4 Litre saloon was the company's first small saloon since the demise of its 1.5 and 2.5 litre cars in 1949 and was an immediate success, easily outselling the larger Jaguar saloons. It introduced a modern style and a new level of performance to this respectable company. This particular car was bought new in Fiji by Roy Spencer who was stationed there with the RNZAF. It arrived in New Zealand in 1958 and spent many years in the family until Rae bought it from Roy’s daughter and son-in-law about five years ago. The purchase came about thanks to Roy’s son-in-law, Gary Murray remembering Rae’s words of many years prior, “If you ever want to sell, I’d like first option.” So Rae received the phone call, agreed immediately and went off to Whatamango Bay, Waikawa to pick it up. Although the Jag was in good condition, Rae soon got to work to bring it up to the standard he wanted. While he did all the mechanical and body repair work himself, Russell’s Paint Shop repainted it – still black of course – and Harold at Selbourne Furniture refurbished

all the woodwork. New carpet and ceiling linings completed the job. Rae concludes, “It’s grossly overcapitalised!” Rae uses the car regularly – at least once a week and enjoys taking it on rallies – the last being the National Jaguar Rally in September 2012. He’s quick to explain that it is a very pleasurable car to drive – it keeps up with the modern day traffic and is reasonable on petrol. Rae also says that finding parts is usually no problem at all – probably easier than some of today’s modern cars! Rae did have one particular memory, although he was a little hesitant to recount it. He was asked to drive the car for a wedding and chauffer the bride. Whilst the car looks fairly big, it’s really all in the width – there isn’t as much room as you might think for getting in and out of the back seat…and the bride, who was a slightly larger lady, got stuck. Rae said it was all pretty embarrassing at the time but they were able to laugh about it afterwards! An impressive sports saloon, Rae hopes this beautiful Jaguar will stay in the family for years to come and provide many hours of driving enjoyment.

We at the Blenheim Salvation Army would just like to say, “What an awesome community we belong to!” We would like to thank you all for the ongoing support throughout the year.

For us, neighbours mean any person whom we have chance to meet; we try to work in this community for this community. We don’t always get it right and we make plenty of mistakes along the way.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year for 2014 and compliments of the Season to you all.

The Blenheim Salvation Army has a local vision that we live to Love God, Love our Neighbours and Serve the World. This is based on two pieces of scripture in Matthew 22 verses 37 to 39 and James 2 verses 14 to 17.

Special thanks must go to the following organisations, groups and businesses; Autotech, Betta Electrical, Blenheim South Rotary Club, Blenheim Lions, Canterbury Community Trust, Community Probation Services, Countdown Stores, Croads Honda and Stihl Shop, Gills Construction, Harvey Norman, Hunting and Fishing, Mainfreight Blenheim, Marlborough District Council, Marlborough Express, Marlborough Lines, Mikes Mowers and Machinery, More FM, New World, Pak n Save, Ports of Marlborough, The Blenheim Sun, The Stadium 2000 and The Blenheim Trust for your ongoing support throughout the year. We especially want to mention Duncan and his staff at Top Town Cinemas. Each year they host the Watties Cans Festival. Duncan makes the cinema available and puts on a good selection of movies and people come along and see a movie for a can of food. This year Blenheim donated over 700 cans of food for the food bank. This was the second highest number of cans collected in the South Island during the Cans Festival. We prayer blessing and protection for each of you over Christmas and New Year and look forward to working with you again in 2014. God Bless.

Sleepless running world record Waikato woman Kim Allan has broken the women’s world record for the longest run without sleeping. The 47-year-old finished the last lap in her 500 kilometre run around the Auckland Domain on Sunday. The mother-of-four started running on Thursday December 19, and hadn’t slept since. Her run was a fundraiser for the New Zealand Spinal Trust.

Rainbow Rage Entries are now open for 2014 Rainbow Rage bike ride being held on February 22. The 106km adventure ride starts outside of St Arnaud, goes through some of the South Island’s awesome sub alpine high country and finishes in the Hanmer domain. “The change from the traditional third Saturday in March has come about with three events landing on the same day/weekend in Nelson as the Rainbow Rage,” said event organiser Mike Gane. “Rather than crying about the fact that the Rainbow Rage has been on this weekend for the last 17 of its 18 years, I have chosen to move the date forward.” There are four events to choose from ranging between a 42km novice event to the 144km Rainbow Rage EPIC. Go to www.rainbowrage.co.nz for more info or to enter.

Sailing used for office team building The Waikawa Boating Club is encouraging local businesses to enter teams in a new sailing event, the Oddies Marine South Island Business House Yachting Championship. Businesses are invited to sign up and send a crew to compete in a series of six races aboard yachts provided by the club. Each yacht come with a skipper and crew, so the business crews need no experience - they just need to be ready to have a lot of fun. The event is the brainchild of the club’s Commodore Ian Michel, who encouraged businesses in the area to treat their staff or their customers, or to create a crew as a team-building exercise. For six Saturday evenings beginning January 18, they will compete with other business crews out on the water. The short-form races will be an hour or two in duration, enough time to experience the action and excitement of a yacht race, he said. Every race will be followed by prize-giving at the Waikawa Boating Club, with the bar and restaurant open for socialising. Up for grabs each night are an array of prizes for skippers and for crew.

Local businesses teams are set to take part in the Oddies Marine South Island Business House Yachting Championships. Photo supplied.

At stake at the end of the series is the chance – for the top three business crews – to compete in the Finals Series. Two other South Island clubs are running the six-race Business House series, with top business crews from each club to meet and

race each other in Tasman Bay, Lyttleton, and Waikawa to determine the inaugural South Island Business House Champion 2014. The race series is a chance for boatless sailors and non-sailors alike to get out and experience the joy of sailing in the South Island.

It’s also a chance for businesses to boost their profile, and to find that competitive edge out on the water. To enter a crew from your business, contact the Waikawa Boating Club at office@waikawaboatingclub.co.nz or call 573 6798.

By Kristy Martin Bagpipes were sounded as Father Christmas made his way down the fairway at the Picton Golf Club’s Ambrose Christmas Party. “One thing led to another and I play the bagpipes, so why not pipe Santa down the fairway,” said John Nicol, who runs the Ambrose group. So Noel Frater from the Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band, Doug McDonald and John Nicol provided the soundtrack for Santa’s entrance into the clubhouse, at the part held on Wednesday last week. This is the first year that Santa actually played golf with the members and “that was interesting, something different,” Mr Nicol laughed. About 64 people, 44 of them golfers, attended the party, which included lunch, wine and a present from Santa. “Everybody’s welcome. “It’s all about the camaraderie, it’s

really not all about the golf,” Mr Nicol explained. “We’re just trying to encourage people to get out and get amongst the people and enjoy the golf course.” “Ambrose competition” was started 1989 with about 40 learners and most of them was retired. All players tee off, the best shot is selected and all players hit again from that same spot. The best second shot is then selected, and all players hit from that same spot, and so on until the ball is holed. Mr Nicol started the Ambrose Golf in Picton almost 25 years ago, when he was president of the Picton Golf Club. “Ambrose is on every Wednesday at 9.30am. “We’ll resume play on about the 15th of January, so if anyone wishes to come along to learn the game, they are welcome to join us on a Wednesday morning.”
