‘Biggest issue in many years’ - mayor Retaining Wairau Hospital services

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman was the first to sign the petition against any possible cuts to acute services at Wairau Hospital when it opened in the Sun office at midday on Monday. Also about to sign are, from left, Don and Pauline Manning and Bruce Emms.

By Chris Tobin “This is the biggest issue facing this population for many, many years.” This was the comment of Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman immediately after he became the first to sign a petition which was launched in the Sun office at midday on Monday calling for acute surgical services at Wairau Hospital to be retained. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is reviewing general and orthopaedic services at the hospital which could see Marlborough acute patients sent to Nelson. “We can’t afford to lose vital services,” Mr Sowman said. “I applaud everyone getting involved and there’s been a huge public response.” A steady stream of people came to sign the petition at the Sun office which is being organised by Save Our Services, a group run by Marlborough district councillor Jessica Bagge and grape-grower Stuart Smith. ‘Biggest issue in years’ Continued from page 1 “I’ve spoken to t he Nelson Marlborough District Health Board chief executive (Chris Fleming) since the public meeting last week,” Mr Sowman said. “I wanted to make sure he was aware of the people’s concerns and the issues. He told me he does and he wants an outcome that’s best for the province. “We’ve got to keep the pressure on. If you lose your registration you just become a rural hospital.” Ms Bagge said in addition to the Sun office she was planning for other places where the public could sign the petition.

Meanwhile, Blenheim woman Dee Bancroft started an online petition at the weekend. “Jess (Ms Bagge) asked if I could help out,” she said. The petition can be linked via a Facebook page which has also been established called Hands Off Wairau Hospital. It was started at the weekend by Blenheim man, Andrew Kavanagh and now has nearly 900 members. Among those opposing any reduction in general and orthopaedic services at the hospital is the New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation which represents 45,000 nurses and health workers.

The Blenheim Sun office has been busy in the first two days of the Save our Services petition, with queues often building up.

Continuing hot, dry weather is forcing irrigation water suppies to be shut down in Marlborough with river levels being affected. On Monday, the Marlborough District Council shut off water for irrigation to about 5000 hectares of farms and and vineyards along the Wairau River and another 30 properties on each side of the Waihopai River.

Wairau Class B consents and Waihopai Class B consents have been suspended and the Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme was also turned off, affecting more than 4500ha of mostly vineyard property. The situation is also looking serious for Rai Valley and irrigation water supplies may have to go off there later this week.

There is reduced flow through Gibsons Creek and that will begin to affect wells in Renwick. The existing water restrictions for Renwick are likely to escalate. No rain is forecast until next weekend. Unfortunately, unless that rainfall proves to be of a significant amount, it may not be sufficient to reinstate these water supplies, the Marlborough

District Council has advised. River flows have been falling steadily since early February. All consent holders are advised to monitor the Marlborough District Council website, www.marlborough. govt.nz where the latest information is being posted regularly. Any consent holders without internet access may phone the council for more information.

Palm trees being removed near Clubs of Marlborough More of the Phoenix palm trees near the Clubs of Marlborough building are to be removed. About 18 palm trees were removed from the site to make way for the construction of the Clubs of Marlborough building in 2007. Most were not able to be relocated. Now, five have to go to make way for the construction of the new Civic Theatre. Theatre project manager Tim Smit said one palm had been taken down already as it was root-bound, its roots wrapped around underground telecommunication services. Five other palms are being assessed by an expert aborist to see if it’s possible to transplant them. Eight of the original 18 were moved and used in landscaping at

the Railway Station and skate park. “Transplanting palms of this size is an expensive exercise and may not be a viable option especially in a dry summer given the likely survival rate,” said Marlborough District Council executive projects manager Jamie Lyall. Mr Lyall said one possible site where an attempt could be made to re-establish the trees was road reserve land in Grove Road, along the riverbank near the Dillon’s Point Road intersection. “We have to balance up the cost – likely to be at least $7000 per tree – against the loss of a mature tree. It’s a shame but these palms were planted in an earlier era and are not really an ideal specimen for today’s urban landscape, as people can see from the bird mess around them.” Phoenix palm trees near the Clubs of Marlborough.

Rally brings celebs to town Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Cupcakes on cars, smiley faces on bonnets and colourful fire engines were just some of the quirky sights seen yesterday as the 2013 Variety Bash car rally passed through Marlborough. The rally enjoyed a breakfast at Picton School where they presented a friendship seat, a grant and reading books to students. The school enjoyed a performance by Ronald McDonald and his friends as well as interacting with Variety Bash drivers and supporters. For two lucky students, Louis Draper and Kara Beattie the highlight was riding along in the rally on top of the Seagrave Ladder ‘Fish Pot Cafe’ 17m long fire appliance. Louis and Kara arrived at McKendry Ford in Blenheim with smiles and excitement in their faces, before being driven back to Picton School by Paul McKendry in a brand new Ford Territory. Half of the rally continued on to the Molesworth Station and the other half visited Tua Marina, Riverlands, Seddon and Hapuku Schools. When the Sun met the rally at Riverlands School, children were excitedly inspecting the vehicles and meeting New Zealand celebrities such as comedian Ewen Gilmore and Go Girls actress Bronwyn Turei. The Variety Bash car rally will now continue its

Blenheim crossings causing confusion By Kat Duggan Crossings in and around Blenheim are proving a source of confusion for both drivers and pedestrians. Senior Constable Tony Edwards, of the Blenheim Police, said incidents surrounding crossings caused by pedestrians vs. drivers were about 50/50. He said it was important for road users to realise the difference between pedestrian crossings and courtesy crossings. “Our main concern is people using the courtesy crossings. People need to realise that these are not actual pedestrian crossings. “On pedestrian crossings it is the driver’s responsibility to stop for pedestrians [when it is safe to do so], whereas on courtesy crossings, vehicles have the right of way, so pedestrians need to take responsibility in making sure it’s safe to cross.” Constable Edwards also pointed out that drivers

Motorists who approach courtesy crossings like this one have the right of way, and are not required by law to stop for pedestrians, so it is up to the pedestrians to make sure it is safe to step onto the road before crossing.

were confused about how long they had to stop at pedestrian crossings. “Some crossings are only divided by a centre

line, which means a driver has to stop for the whole time somebody is crossing. Other crossings have a dividing island in the centre of the road, and a driver is only required to stop if a pedestrian is on, or approaching their side of the road,” he said. White diamonds are painted on the road approaching either side of a pedestrian crossing, and are there for the use of both pedestrians and drivers. Constable Edwards said that if a car had crossed the diamond on the road, the car had the right of way, and a pedestrian should not step onto the crossing until the car had passed or stopped. He added that commonsense came in to play, and that both motorists and pedestrians needed to stay alert. Pedestrians should try to make eye contact with drivers on both pedestrian and courtesy crossings, to make sure it was safe to cross before stepping onto the road.

It’s the final week of census collectors going door to door to pick up completed paper forms for the 2013 census. “Census collectors have done a fantastic job of working their way around New Zealand homes dropping off and now picking up census forms,” general manager of the 2013 Census Carol Slappendel said. “However, if anyone has not yet completed their census form, they still have time to go online or to fill in the paper version.” Collectors will be going door to door until March 17, 2013.

Speedy freight service vital, says minister By Chris Tobin Increasing volumes of freight between the North and South islands mean the proposal to relocate the ferry terminal from Picton to Clifford Bay has to be investigated Minister of Transport Gerry Brownlee says. “If Clifford Bay doesn't go ahead then over a relatively short time Picton will need to have improved wharfage and handling facilities,” he said at a lunch hosted by the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce on Friday. “The capital expenditure would fall on the Marlborough District Council as owners of the Ports of Marlborough.” He said predicted freight increases would place heavy demands on ferry

services from Picton and speed restrictions in the Marlborough Sounds would limit efficiency. “By bringing travel times down between our major population centres, we could increase trade between the two islands and so increase economic prosperity.” The Clifford Bay proposal which he described as “a challenging build in exposed waters,” would if approved, cut 30 minutes off the ferry trip between the two islands; the Christchurch-Wellington rail trip would be reduced by 80 minutes and the road trip by 50 minutes. “The shorter ferry journey woud mean ships could be more productive, making more journeys. They would also burn less

fuel.” Mr Brownlee emphasised the Clifford Bay proposal was still being considered. If approved building would begin in 2016 with completion in 2020. “We'll know mid-April or May if we can put a safe port in there. Before any final decision we'd have to know what the local consequences are.” Answering a question regarding the projected $422 million funding for relocation of the terminal he said it should be shared by private interests and the Government. “You can't predict the percentage; we'd prefer entirely private funding. We shouldn't be frightened of foreign investment.”

Picton comment not meant to be offensive Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston asked Minister of Transport Gerry Brownlee on Friday to clarify a comment he made saying Picton could become the next Queenstown. He said he had been surprised by the response and did not mean anything offensive. “I wa s su r pr ise d it cause d so much a ngst; I rea lly li ke Picton.” He said the town’s foreshore, presently dominated by ferry operations and industrial land, had the potential for great opportunitties. Ms Johnston said Queenstown had a “completely different focus.” Mr Brownlie replied “that’s right.”

Earlier in his speech at the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Mr Brownlee said regardless of the ferry teminal location, he believed Picton could capitalise on its surroundings. “Clearly the loss of the inter-island ferry trade could have an economic impact on Picton. But economic models struggle to capture potential, especially for innovation.” He said since the closure of the Picton freezing works in 1983 the population had risen from 3220 to over 4000 and the cruiseships trade had gone from nine visits in 2009/10 to 21 expected in 2013.

MGS student makes Anzac final A speech inspired by her great grandfather about railway men in the North African campaign during World War Two has earned a Marlborough Girls’ College student a place in the national final of the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition. Year 13 student Nerys Udy, won the Nelson/Marlborough/Westland regional final of the national speech contest on Sunday. Nerys will compete against seven other year 12 and 13 regional finalists at the national final in Wellington on March 27, with the overall winner travelling to Gallipoli for 2013 Anzac Day

commemorations. Nerys’ speech was entitled ‘The Forgotten Railway Men’. RSA district president Derek Nees said entries in the Nelson/ Marlborough/Westland regional final had been of a high standard. “It’s wonderful to see our young generation embracing the opportunity to research and present on the topic of New Zealanders at War,” he said. “This is the fourth year the competition has been held, and we continue to be hugely impressed by the standard of the students, the connection they make with the past, and their understanding

of sacrifice.” The annual competition is a partnership between the RSA and ANZ to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by those who have served New Zealand in armed conflicts overseas. Launched in 2010 under The National Bank brand, the competition is a tribute to Cyril Bassett, VC (1892-1983) – the only New Zealander at Gallipoli to be awarded the Victoria Cross, and one who worked his entire career at The National Bank. ANZ bought The National Bank in 2003 and merged the brands last year.

February 2013 technical winner By Kat Duggan February 2013 could have had the most sunshine on record for Blenheim after all. The Blenheim Sun received a phone call from reader Rosemary Clark last week, who pointed out that the record-holding February of 1968 was a leap year, meaning it had a day longer than February 2013 to stack up the sunshine hours. Plant and Food Scientist Rob Agnew said it was not correct to say that February 2013 had more sunshine hours than February 1968, because they

take the measurements on a calendar month, and not on days in the month. He said, however, that it was in fact correct that Blenheim had a higher daily average of sunshine hours in February 2013 than in February 1968. “This year the average sunshine hours [for February] was higher, with an average of 10 hours and 24 minutes per day of sunshine, whereas 1968 had an average of 10 hours and 16 minutes of sunshine per day, so we had eight minutes more sunshine per day than 1968,” he said.

An evening with Hayley By Chris Tobin Being a reporter does have its perks occasionally. One such perk came last Thursday evening when I found myself in the front table sitting with Brancott Estate chief winemaker Patrick Materman and his wife, together with several others. We were in the head table, too, enjoying a superb second entree prepared by chef Sander de Wildt when who should just pop out to entertain us with a few songs? Hayley Westenra. As darkness descended upon the hilltop on which sits the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre, for 40 minutes Hayley held us and about 50 others entranced with her stunning voice and magnificient renditions of I Dreamed A Dream, You Know Me By Heart, Pokarekare Ana and other songs. As the evening progressed we worked our

way through an entree of salmon leek and potato with a glass of Sauvignon Gris followed by a second entree of Goat’s fromage blanc mousse on courgettes with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Next came the wine of the evening, Brancott Estate’s first limited edition release Sauvignon Blanc – Chosen Rows Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010. “The fruit purity and lively acidity is unmistakenly Marlborough,” the PR blurb says of the wine. “On the nose the aromatics are seductive and complex with ripe nectarine, floral, fig and spice notes with touches of white truffle and flint.” I didn’t quite get the touch of white truffle but the limited edition wine (only 3500 bottles) went down a treat. Then we progressed onto the main – lamb or Monkfish with a glass of Pinot Gris, (Hayley had finished by this time) - and

Hayley Westenra entralls the audience.

ended with a dessert of semi freddo and plums with a sweet late harvest Sauvignon

Blanc. Yes, life as a reporter does have its ‘ups.’

Perfect Tempo in search of new musicians weather for vintage 2013 By Kat Duggan Cr unch time is approaching for Marlborough wine growers, who are about to start harvesting their grapes, if they haven’t already. Wine Marlborough general manager, Markus Pickens said the summer could “hardly have been better,” as far as vintage 2013 goes. “The weather has been stunning really, hardly could have been better. I think when you hear the average Joe Bloggs in the street saying the weather is amazing, it’s reflected five times over on the vineyards.” Mr Pickens said with about six weeks until harvest is finished, wine growers were hoping the good weather would continue. “We’re always nervous at this time of year, too much water, not enough water, we’re hoping for the next few weeks to be perfect,” he said. According to New Zealand Wine Growers chief executive officer, Philip Gregan, the warm dry summer across New Zealand has been perfect for the wine industry, despite the challenges it has posed for the county’s pastoral sector. “If the grapes harvested to date are any indication then vintage 2013 will be one to remember,” Mr Gregan said.

By Kat Duggan Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage, or Tempo, is currently looking for young Marlborough musicians and singers to share their music with them. Tempo’s aim is to provide young musicians with a platform to share their music with other like-minded people within a supportive and encouraging environment. Blenheim piano teacher, and Tempo promoter, Linda Lloyd, said all school-aged youths were welcome to come along. “Whether they play guitar, sing, play piano or an orchestral instrument, or bongos, base guitar, drums, bagpipes – all instruments! All abilities whether beginning or advanced, all genre of music and all school-aged youths are encouraged to come along and perform.”

Millie Wensley, singing a vocal solo at a Tempo concert last year. Photo Supplied courtesy of Jessica Jones.

Tempo holds monthly concerts which provide the young musicians with a fre-

quent opportunity to perform in front of an audience, which Linda says does wonders for the confidence of these musical youths. “Over the four years we’ve been running Tempo we’ve seen youngsters get up for their first time all nervous and unsure of themselves, but after only a few times they begin to really blossom on stage,” she said. This year the concerts, which all have different themes, will be held on the first Friday of every month beginning the first Friday in April, at the Wesley Centre on Henry Street. Entry to the concerts costs $2 per person, or $5 per family of two adults, and three children. For more information you can contact Linda, on 578 9177, or Frank & Rachel Zydenbos on 578 0242, or look online at www.tempoconcert.blogspot.com.

Council to research Taylor River quality The Marlborough District Council is to embark on some major research into the water quality of the Taylor River and the small waterways that run into it. It has agreed to a study of the Taylor’s catchment area to look at the way rural land use is affecting water quality and to examine the town’s stormwater system and how its effects the river. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said the project showed the council was serious about tackling the issue of water quality in Marlborough.

“In recent years we have realised the town should not be turning its back to the river. We have done a lot of work along its edges and people are again learning to appreciate its importance. Now it’s time to get serious about the quality of the water flowing within its banks.” “I said at the beginning of this council’s term that I would like to see Marlborough earn the reputation for the cleanest water in the country so I am very pleased to see the support for this project.” Councillors have been told by council staff

that Marlborough has a number of rivers where water quality is affected by land use, human activity and natural processes and water quality has been noted as an issue in the Taylor River and its major rural tributary, Doctors’s Creek. The council has a stormwater strategy but it’s planning to back that up with a substantial monitoring programme, collating information from 23 sites across Blenheim, in order to get an accurate analysis of the pollutants that are getting into the system and the sources of that contamination.

I think it would be a very bad day for Marlborough if we lost the acute services. We need to be a bit careful because at this stage it is just a review, everyone should have their say but we shouldn’t assume we’ve lost our services.

From what I can gather I think it’s ridiculous, and it would put pressure on a lot of different aspects of the hospital.

There are so many reasons why it’s a terrible idea. People that need acute care would need to go all the way to Nelson, what will they do? Then there’s job losses as well. Definitely not a good idea.

I think it’s stupid actually, what happens if we need emergency help and have to go to Nelson? It’s not practical at all.

Rebecca Wright, Blenheim Moving acute services to Nelson is not a great idea. With the time it takes to get over to Nelson, if it’s acute there’s not enough time for that.

Letters to the editor

Clifford Bay Dear Ed, Since the local government act of 2002, I wonder if the council is representing the will of the people of Marlborough or pandering to Government, Corporate and special interest. The issue of Clifford Bay and taking away key services from Picton makes no sense, economically or commercially unless there is a hidden agenda. To take the ferries away is going to decimate tourism and the large servicing industry not only in Picton but also in Blenheim as well. The loss of jobs and redundancies will be severe. Three ports servicing 100,000 people? The huge investment in new infastructure into the 10s of millions for what, a saving of 30-40minutes travel time. The tax payer will pay. Why not invest in smaller faster craft? which make more frequent trips, better air service. Really Mr Brownlee, Mr Sowman and the council, what is the real purpose oil or minerals? Come clean tell us the truth, and represent the people not special interests. Are we still a democracy? Are you listening? Stop wasting our money. Skeptical Pleb

Time of change Dear Ed, We’re seeing a lot of change around Marlborough what with talk of Clifford Bay going ahead and now they’re looking at cutting hospital services at Wairau. The population of Marlborough is growing not going backwards. Why cut hospital services? And why would you even think about it when you’ve just built a new hospital a few years ago. Doesn’t seem to be much logical

thinking going on. And whether Clifford Bay goes ahead or not there’s going to be a lot of building work going on regardless - either at Picton or Clifford Bay. I’m sure a lot of the guys who’ll be working on that would like to be aware that there was a decent hospital not far away just in case they had an accident. Marlborough’s supposed to be going forward not backwards. Concerned ratepayer

Kind person Dear Ed, I wish to thank the very kind person who found my camera and returned it to the St. Mary School Office, on Saturday March 9 at the School fair. I intended to take a few photos, but

completely forgot with all the fun and excitement of the occasion. When I realized I hadn’t got it, I thought well that’s that...but it wasn’t Blenheim has many kind and wonderful people....Thank you. Rosalie

Wairau Hospital Dear Ed, Why is Marlborough always second fiddle to Nelson? That seems to be what the whole debate about the future of our hospital services is about. As someone commented, is there any review of services over in Nelson to try and get the books to balance a bit better after the big blow out? Lose acute services and what happens? Blenheim and Marlborough become a backwater. All those old people who like to retire here will think again. Businesses will think why take the risk and so you get a whole cycle of things happening. Come on Marlborough, sign the petition, make your views known. Otherwise it could be too late. Stand Up Marlborough

What do you think? What do you think of the possible cuts to services at Wairau Hospital? Write us a letter. Email news@blenheimsun. co.nz or write to Editor, Blenheim Sun 72 High St, PO Box 634, Blenheim.

Traditions fading away

Dear Ed, I hear on the news that by the end of the year the ‘Mondayizing’ of public holidays will passed by the Government. The actual true dates of No snoozing on these puppies the special days will possibly one day or you might miss out! be forgotten by our younger generation growing up. you believe it, to February when the weather is better (maybe)! Next year Anzac Day for example would have been Friday April 25 but I presume we will be celebrating it on Monday April 27. Do many of our younger generation even know the significance of Waitangi and Anzac Day, or is it just a day off work or school I wonder? Hillary Blenheim

Boaties Dear Ed, If Kim Kahawai doesn’t read the signs at the boat launching ramp informing him of the rights of boat drivers in the Lower Wairau (Blenheim Sun, March 6) then maybe he should read the letters to the editor from boat owners who do read the signs. The signs state clearly that boats are legitimately allowed to use this part of the river. David King (boatie and fisherman), Blenheim

one on one with the Sun

Never give up He was determined to keep going. And every time Rarangi’s Denis Holcroft completes another long stitch masterpiece, he thanks his pure determination, which allows him to complete the craft one-handed. The Sun’s Annabelle Latz catches up with him. Denis was just 54 years-old when he suffered a stroke in 1985, while on a work conference for the saw milling industry in Rotorua. Now 82 years-old, he moved to Rarangi 25 years ago to be closer to his brothers. Denis said losing the ability to walk and talk was never going to be permanent, as far as he was concerned. “I’ll tell you all I could say, and it wasn’t very nice. All I could say was bloody shit. Everything was bloody shit.” Denis remembers dragging himself around the hospital corridors within days of his stroke. “I started walking after about two days. I used to go around hospital in Rotorua, dragging my right foot behind me. It was terrible.” Denis never stopped walking, or keeping his body and mind active. “Eighteen months later it all started coming back,” he said, thanks to the help of an occupational therapist. He was living in Greymouth on the West Coast at the time, where he would walk three times a day. Some eighteen months after his stroke he returned to the workforce, as caretaker at the high school. “I used to limp around the school.” “I must have always been an active man, I’m 82 now and I’m still around here.” Although Denis made a great recovery with his speech and mobility, the use of his right arm is still lost. He was in Invercargill 15 years ago looking after some of his grandchildren,

when he saw long stitch for the first time. “It keeps me occupied, it plays part.” Denis has completed many pieces over the years, where he buys a template and fills in the sections by stitching in wool. “I just do it whenever I have the time.” He enjoys his craft, but the main reason for the uptake was to keep him occupied. His walls are now filled with framed pieces. W hen he moved to Marlborough, Denis took a liking to a bare section of land at Rarangi, and built his house on it that he still lives in today. He said it was hard work, and slow, as he only had the use of one arm. But with family support and a strong will, he got there. “I’ve made my own life. I’ve made this myself, done it all myself. I’ve got quite a nice home.” He likes to potter in his garden which boasts an abundance of fruit, vegetables and colour. His sleepout which he also built is well set up for family when they come to visit. And as much as he can, he takes his Jack Russell Whiskers down to Rarangi Beach for a walk. “Just keep going. Just keep doing anything. That’s all I can say.”

Blenheim Denture Studio is the only practice in Marlborough to offer patients the benefits of an APT injection moulded denture. APT is a system that provides high quality dentures that are the most natural looking and closest fitting prosthetics available. Using state of the art technology to replicate the appearance and function of natural teeth APT dentures exceed internationally accepted benchmarks previously set for dentures. Due to the exact fit and strength of an APT denture, problems like multiple adjustments and cracking are virtually eliminated. You get a denture that fits and lasts fantastically. The teeth used are the best available on the market. Their distinctively natural appearance surpasses anything previously available in dentures. They contain multiple blended layers of dentin and enamel to create a natural, lifelike effect neverseen before.

Blenheim Denture Studio director Chris Parkes has been with the business for eight years, specialising in APT injection moulded dentures.

This blending of layers guarantees enduring colour stability and long-lasting wear. It also produces a shading effect that is indistinguishable from natural teeth. APT dentures are made from the highest quality materials that are tested and certified for biocompatibility at independent institutes. These materials meet and exceed all the required international standards under very strict quality control procedures. If you wish to see what the best denture available on the market can do for your appearance, confidence and long-term well-being. springlands

in the spotlight

Exciting times for lifestyle village By Celeste Lodewyk Exciting new changes have been afoot at Springlands Lifestyle Village. These changes were celebrated last month during the Village’s Open Day which saw more than 200 people take a tour of the grounds and facilities. Village manager Naomi Nailer was thrilled with the response and said as a result a number of studios, apartments and villas were sold. “Everyone commented on how lovely the Village was and appreciated the strong sense of family we have here. “We are proud to be family owned and operated and this came across during the Open Day as we all came together to greet everyone and show them around,” she said. Three studios, three villas and an apartment were sold following the Open Day and enquiries are continuing to come in. For those still considering their options, Naomi said there were still some availabilities. “We still have seven independent apartments available as well as two studios and one serviced apartment” Another exciting change is Naomi’s return to the Village after being away on maternity leave, following the birth of son Max last year. Naomi’s return will see the departure of husband Hayden as Kitchen manager, as he plans to spend quality time at home with the couple’s two children.

Sara Gane wears the medals she won at last month’s swimming nationals, with the guidance of her mum, Jenni Gane.

Marlborough ace swimmer aims high By Kat Duggan Blenheim swimmer, Sara Gane, has come away from the age-group swimming nationals with another three medals, and is not looking at stopping her swimming career anytime soon. Sara took out gold for the 14 years 100m breaststroke, as well as two silvers, for the 50m, and 200m of the same stroke, at the national event in Wellington last month. Sara has been wining medals since she started competing at the age of 10, and her next goal is to try and qualify for the 2016

Olympic Games in Rio. “I really want to make the Olympics, I am at least going to try and get as close as possible for the qualifying times for Rio,” she said. Sara was taught to swim by her mother, Jenni, who went to the Commonwealth Games swimming trials at the age of 13. Sara now trains for up to sixteen hours a week in the pool under the guidance of Jenni, as well as Nelson-based swimming coach Andy Adair, and Jenni praises Sara for her achievements. “She’s earned them, she puts in all the hard work so it’s good to see

her get something back for all the hard work she puts in, not many people have that motivation,” she said. Two of Sara’s achievements at this year’s age-group nationals were also open records for NelsonMarlborough, making her the fastest ever female 50m and 100m breaststroke swimmer in the top of the South Island, and she is not giving up yet. “I just want to do it. Sometimes it’s harder than others, but I don’t know what I’d actually do [if I didn’t swim], probably sit at home and be bored,” she said.

Fairhall Phoenix dominate By Alvyn Meiklejohn Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers’ and Premier School’s Competition competed in round three last Friday. Subway Fair Play Team of the Week was awarded to Bohally Wonderfuls in the year 7/8 grade. This team showed good sportsmanship and looked like they enjoyed their game against the Renwick Diggers. With good co-operation, serving and rallies from both teams Bohally took the game two sets to one. The girls from Renwick fought back in the third and deserved to win the set 11-15. In the Premier grade Fairhall Phoenix once again dominated the court in their game against Bohally Incredibles.

Missing their boy teammates Marvin Ricken and Liam Jennison , the Fairhall girls showed they could win the game by themselves. Bohally put up quite a good fight in the first set but the girls from Fairhall Phoenix showed their experience on the larger court taking the first set 25-16. In the second and third sets, the scores 25-6 and 25-9 were reminiscent of Fairhall’s game last week. However Olivia Robinson did some fantastic serving for the new girls of Bohally. Top points once again to Fairhall Phoenix. Marlborough Spikers rep practice began on Friday after the games were played and Marlborough Volleyball wel-

comed MBC senior team coach Crispin Phelan as coach for these Spikers teams.
