Sunshine stolen... again By Kristy Martin Photo by Celeste Lodewyk This newspaper might have to be renamed The Blenheim Cloud, as our town prepares to lose its sunshine title for the fifth year running. Whakatane is expected to once again be named sunniest town in New Zealand when NIWA releases its annual climate summary for 2013 in the coming days. It will be back-to-back wins for Whakatane, on the North Island, which also recorded the highest sunshine hours in 2012 and 2010. Blenheim last won the title back in 2008, before it was snatched up by Nelson the following year. Nelson was also the 2011 winner. Continued page 3. Blenheim twins Karlos and Maia Gemmell (8) were hoping for better weather for their school holidays.

Marlborough welcomes first baby for 2014 Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Snuggled into her mother’s arms, newborn baby girl Wynter Rose Jones is blissfully unaware of the hype surrounding her birthday. Wynter was Marlborough’s first baby born for 2014 after arriving on January 1. For her parents Anthony and Natasha Jones they were “secretly hoping” she would be the first. “It’s a date we won’t forget,” laughed Natasha. Wynter’s due date was in fact New Year’s Eve, and in timely fashion

Natasha began experiencing contractions an hour before midnight. She arrived at 10:40pm weighing 6lb 14oz and is adored by her two-year-old brother William. The couple chose Wynter’s name after searching the internet and seeing it with its unusual spelling. “I liked the fact it wasn’t in the top 10 popular names, it’s nice to have something a bit different,” Natasha said.

Proud sister Dakota Rarity (2) with baby brother Hunter, born on Christmas Day.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim couple Chloe and Daniel Rarity celebrated their Christmas in a most memorable way, in labour at Wairau Hospital. They welcomed their son Hunter Jay Rarity at 9:09pm on Christmas Day, also his due date. “We were told there was a four per cent chance of a baby being born on its due date, so it was pretty exciting when it happened for us,” Chloe said. Chloe said her waters broke on December 23 and she was admitted

on Christmas morning. When they arrived at the maternity ward, Chloe said there was already a bassinet decorated in Christmas theme. “There was a toy reindeer and Christmas blanket waiting for the first baby born that day which we thought was cute and we wondered if it might be us,” she laughed. “It was pretty cool when we found out it was.” Hunter was born a healthy 10lb 5oz and came as “the best Christmas present” for excited two-year-old

sister Dakota. “Dakota tells people for Christmas she got a new brother, it’s so cute,” Chloe said. Chloe and Daniel wished to thank their midwife Cathy Middleton for “giving up her Christmas Day” to deliver Hunter. “We felt bad for our midwife that she had to spend Christmas at the hospital, but she was amazing and it made the whole experience more special,” they said.

Blenheim’s sunshine title a distant memory Continued from page 1 We had 2448 sunshine hours in Blenheim in 2013, just slightly up on the 2443 recorded in 2012, when we came fifth in the national competition. But while we have been lagging in the sunshine stakes, 2013 was actually Blenheim’s second hottest year on record. The mean temperature for 2013 was 13.86C, while the highest - dating back to 1932 - was 13.95 in 1998. Rob Agnew, a scientist with Plant and Food Research, says Blenheim’s warm temperatures had brought on the flowering of grapes earlier than usual, meaning there will be an earlier start to the 2014 sauvignon blanc harvest. “It usually starts in late March but I’d say it will be a week earlier at least. “Perhaps even mid-March,” he said. “We also had less ground frosts in 2013.

“There were 47, compared with 64 in 2012 and 58 in 2011. “That shows it was a milder winter.” Rainfall figures for 2013 were up on the previous year, with 700mm recorded compared with 580 in 2012. And speaking of rainfall, wet weather has provided a rough start to 2014, marring the

holidays for people throughout Marlborough. There were also wind gusts reaching more than 110kmh in the Sounds last weekend. But according to MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett, this is just Mother Nature’s way of tormenting us. “If you look back to last year, the exact same thing happened at the end of December and the first two weeks of January. “It didn’t really right itself until the middle of January and then we had a glorious February and March.” Mr Corbett said we can expect a fine start today followed by some evening showers. The rain will continue tomorrow and Friday before a predicted sunny weekend, with 22C forecast for Saturday and 24-25C on Sunday. However, the cool spring-type weather and showers are likely to continue throughout January before settling down for more pleasant weather toward the end of the month.

School site ‘not large enough’ By Kristy Martin A ge og r a phy t e a ch e r a t Marlborough Boys’ College says ‘basic maths’ shows there is not enough room for the 2000 students from the boys’ and girls’ colleges to fit on the McLauchlan Street site. When it was announced that there was a possibility Blenheim’s two secondary colleges would merge, MBC’s head of social sciences, Chris Grage, decided to do his own research. Using a simple method of dividing the geographical area by the number of students, Mr Grage compared the current girls’ college site with other schools around the country. He found that the McLauchlan St college would give students less space than any other site he looked at. He now believes Blenheim secondary students would be at a national disadvantage if a merger were to go ahead. One example of Mr Grage’s research examined Albany Senior School, which has 711 students and an area of 40,000 square metres. Therefore, there is 56.26 sq m per student. Other schools he studied had areas of 81, 141, 65 and 107 sq m per student. But if all 2000 Marlborough

Too small: Chris Grage says the Marlborough Girls' College is not large enough for 2000 students.

secondary students were shifted to one site, on McLauchlan Street, which is one proposal being examined by the Ministry of Education, there would be just 41.85 sq m for each student. “I managed to find land size in hectares for some other schools in New Zealand through a series of Google searches,” Mr Grage explained. “Then found the roll sizes from the Ministry of Education website. “It is simplistic and basic maths, but the differences are obvious. “I was unable to find a school where the students would have less space than the proposed merged school on the current MGC site.

“That is not to say that one does not exist, I simply couldn’t find one. “But I did look.” The Ministry of Education is currently seeking input from the community on what to do with the current Marlborough colleges, as both are in need of extensive repair work and earthquake strengthening. Options include repairing and restoring both colleges separately with greater sharing of facilities, merging the colleges to one coeducational site or building a brand new college at a different location. Concerns about the size of the girls’ college, the proposed merger

location, and its lack of playing fields were raised at a public meeting last year. Questions have also arisen as to what will happen to the Bohally Intermediate School, which is located next to the girls’ college. “I am personally not against building two single-sex schools with a shared site,” Mr Grage said. “But I am against any proposal that sees our young people disadvantaged in relation to their peers at other schools in NZ.” A second public consultation meeting will be held on January 20. Titled ‘St Omer House’ the book was written for Flora’s family, recording family life and experiences through over 80 years of living in the Sounds. It recounts some of the history of St Omer in France and the early association of some of Marlborough’s families. It then follows the lives of Frank and Margaret Godsiff when they bought and started the Guesthouse at St Omer, sharing stories of their family and of the many guests that became lifelong friends. Police inbrief

Busy time for rescue chopper

Assault on school grounds

A 41-year-old Picton man was arrested after a female was sexually violated in the grounds of Picton School early on New Year’s Day. Police were alerted to the attack about 5am and a Police dog tracked the offender to a Picton address where he was arrested soon after.

Schoolyard vandal

At 9.30pm last Friday, a 17-year-old male was arrested for wilful damage. He was tracked from the Redwoodtown School by a police dog unit after police received reports of youths at the school. Police said the teenager had put his leg through clearlite roofing after running along the veranda. He will face court on January 27.

Driver danger

At 1.50am on Saturday, a 20-year-old male labourer was arrested on Aerodrome Rd for reckless driving. Police charged the man with failing to stop for police, reckless driving, driving at dangerous speed and operating a vehicle to cause a sustained loss of traction. He appeared in the Blenheim District Court yesterday.

Drunk on Scott

At 2.15am on Saturday, a 22-year-old unemployed male was arrested on Scott Street for disorderly behaviour. A 28-year-old unemployed man was also arrested in the same area for the same offence. Both received pre-charge warnings and were held until sober.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was kept busy over New Year, with a number of callouts to airlift injured people from the Sounds area. Chopper crews attended two incidents on New Year’s Eve, picking up a 24-year-old Blenheim man from Robinhood Bay, Port Underwood, after he suffered critical spinal injuries as a result of a moped crash. He was assessed at the scene by the helicopter’s intensive care paramedics before being flown to Wairau Hospital for further assessment. Earlier that evening, the chopper transported a woman aged in her 50s to Nelson Hospital from Bulwer in the outer Pelorus Sound following a medical emergency. On January 2, the rescue helicopter airlifted three injured people from the Marlborough Sounds area in three separate callouts. In the first incident, a 73-year-old man was found lying on the ground outside for an unkown amount of time after a fall near

Portage Lodge in Kenepuru Sound. The male was treated on scene by the helicopter crew medics and stabilised before being flown to Nelson Emergency Department for further treatment. The second callout was also in Kenepuru Sound, at Waitaria Bay, where a male

tourist was found after his car had rolled down a small embankment. He was treated on scene for leg and abdominal injuries by the helicopter Intensive Care paramedic and flown to Wairau Emergency Department for further assessment. On return to Nelson base, the helicopter was diverted to Moetapu Bay near Havelock, where a six-year-old boy holidaying from Christchurch had fallen from a deck and injured his head. The helicopter landed on the front lawn of a bach and the crew transported to the nearby scene. The boy was treated and flown with his Dad to Wairau Emergency Department for observations. During this mission a second helicopter from Nelson flew to the Rai Valley area for a woman suffering severe chest pains.

Police seeking hammer wielding suspect from attempted robbery Police are still working to identify the man who attempted to rob a Blenheim dairy with a hammer late last month. The man was caught on CCTV camera when he entered the Showgrounds store on Maxwell Road on December 29 armed with a hammer. He demanded cash from the shop attendant but was unsuccessful and ran from the shop. He was last seen heading east on Litchfield Street. The offender is described as

a large Polynesian male with black hair which was frizzy on top and had a long ponytail at the back. He is described as nearly sixfoot tall and has a large nose. He was wearing white rimmed sunglasses, a black hoodie and black shoes with red soles. He was carrying what appeared to be a black woman’s bag. The shop attendant was shaken, but unharmed in the

incident. Blenheim Police are asking anyone with information or who recognises the offender to contact them on 578 5279. Information can also be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Right: The man who tried to rob the Showgrounds Store with a hammer was caught on camera.

lenheim couple Tracy Taylor and Peter Sutherland had a firm idea of how they wanted their home built, so they were pleased when Peter Ray Homes worked closely with them to deliver what they wanted. “This was the first time Peter and I had built together so we had a big list of ‘must haves’ and wanted to be involved in every stage of the build. “Rowan met with us regularly, sometimes in the evenings and went over everything in detail. He took us through showhomes to see how our ideas would look and when our build started he encouraged us to visit the site.

“When we did the tradesmen would put down their tools to show us around and talk us through everything, so throughout there were no surprises, everything was done to how we wanted it to be,” Tracy said. Rowan told Tracy and Peter the build would take approximately five months, and it did! “Rowan and his team worked day, night and even weekends to have our home built on time. Everyone who was involved was clearly dedicated to their craft,” Peter said. “People ask us what would we change... to which we reply - nothing! “The trust for Rowan and Peter Ray Homes was there from the start and the whole experience was stressfree and fun,” Tracy said.

Fun assured at Picton festival

There’s always a good reason to come to Picton, but on Saturday January 18 there’s an even better one - the ninth Annual Picton Maritime Festival. “Celebrating the unique maritime heritage of Picton, this event is all about giving families the opportunity to spend time and participate in fun activities together,” organising committee chairperson Beryl Bowers said. “We are determined to keep the festival free to enter. “So many of these types of events are becoming beyond the reach of the average Kiwi family, and we want to make sure they can still come to this one.” Commencing at 11am, the main stage will be packed with live children’s entertainers, Queen Charlotte kapa haka, Star Dance Academy, Levity Beat from Nelson and Captain Festus McBoyle & Sir William Crust from Auckland, who will bring some fun to the stage for the young ones. Pirate Island is full of free fun for little hands and this year’s theme is Under the Ocean. Tash from Conservation Kids and Karen McLeod will help with pre-schooler activities from 11am to 4.30pm. Also this year there will be relay games with the maritime theme

From whale hunters to conservationists A new film depicting the history of whaling in Cook Strait and the transformation of local whalers into whale conservationists will premiere in Picton this month. Whale Chasers looks at the birth of shore-based whaling when the first Pakeha settled at Te Awaiti in the Sounds, and how nearly 200 years on, their descendants, actual former whalers are helping to conserve whale species. The film, directed by Tess Brosnan and made with assistance from Natural History New Zealand and the Centre for Science Communication,

Education

Make a difference If you’re keen to train for a career where you can make a real difference in people’s lives, then look no further than an SIT nursing degree. The past five years has seen the course attain both a 100% student pass rate and 100% employment rate for graduates on completion. Sally Dobbs is the academic and relationship leader within the Faculty of Health, Humanities and Computing and has put her nursing skills to use through her role in the NZ Army territorials. Sally says SIT students have access to one of the best high-tech simulation suites in the country. Set up as a working hospital room, students are let loose on George, one of SIT’s technologically advanced mannequins. He can simulate a range of symptoms and

illnesses, respond to treatment or even begin to deteriorate if he doesn’t receive the appropriate care. George can ‘bleed’, suffer an asthma attack and even talk to the students. “The simulation suite allows students to practise their clinical skills on mannequins that replicate real life scenarios, in a real

environment,” says Sally. Throughout their three years of fulltime study, students also enjoy a total of 1500 hours in workplace experience across Southland and in Dunedin. Hospital jobs are only one of the options available for registered nurses – other roles include occupational health, the military, nutrition, primary health promotion, rest homes and many more. There’s one intake for the Bachelor of Nursing year in February with a Pre Entry Certificate to the Bachelor of Nursing beginning February and July. So if you’re keen to kickstart your career in a role that really matters, contact SIT for an enrolment form and be ready to make a difference. Preparing children for school

Education

What looks like child’s play is actually an important foundation for learning for life and preparation for school. Kidicorp, New Zealand’s largest childcare provider has three centres in Blenheim, ABC Mayfield, ABC Springlands and ABC Blenheim Central. The centre’s teachers benefit from the company’s professional development support that is second to none. Its centres also have a reputation for providing the best environment and resources for children. Kidicorp offers the unique Be School Ready programme to ensure children are readied for their next big learning step. “We want children to love learning so we put a lot of effort into creating an environment. We want children to settle into school easily and be familiar with the habits and routines of school – it makes those next learning years so much easier. You’ll see it when you walk into our well-equipped centres,” says Rachael Steans, business manager. “Our teachers form close relationships with children and families - it is a vital way they support children’s learning. “If you have an under three year old we ensure each child’s needs are met by a teacher who forms a relationship with the child, understands their specific routine, learning needs and developmental stage. “The way we teach children is by working on the child’s current interests. Our skilled teachers then look for ways to weave literacy, numeracy, maths and science into their interests. Along the way we encourage independence, practice turn-taking and support children to develop the social skills they will need for school.”

2013 lowest road toll in 60 years The New Zealand provisional road toll for 2013 of 254 is the lowest in the last 60 years, Associate Transport Minister Michael Woodhouse announced last week. This compares with 308 in 2012, 284 in 2011, and 375 in 2010. “The 2013 road toll was 34 per cent lower than four years ago and it’s particularly pleasing that 15-24 year olds have seen a significant drop with a 37 per cent lower road toll than in 2009,” Mr Woodhouse says. “While the number of cars on the roads has increased significantly, our annual road toll has now more than halved from 20 years ago, when 600 New Zealanders a year were killed on the roads. “In fact, the provisional road toll

for 2013 is 1/6 the rate of the lowest road toll from 60 years ago when measured on a kilometres travelled basis.” Provisional data for 2013 indicates that alcohol and/or drugs was a factor in 30 per cent of fatal crashes, compared with 31 per cent in 2012. Speed was a factor in 32 per cent of fatal crashes, compared with 25 per cent in 2012. “Although the 2013 toll is the lowest on record, too many families lost their loved ones on our roads last year, while many others have had their lives changed forever,” Mr Woodhouse says. “The summer holidays are not over so it’s important that we all continue to use the road safely.”

Megan still the Queen By Kristy Martin The year is off to a royal start for Blenheim’s Megan Craig, who was crowned Queen of the Withers at the weekend. The 20-year-old, better known for her squash skills than her running prowess, secured the women’s title in the King and Queen of the Withers race, held on Saturday. Back-to-back female winner Craig admits she did very little training but managed to shave four minutes off her 2013 time. She also broke the women’s race record. Two days after the gruelling 10km run over Blenheim’s famous Wither Hills, Craig was still feeling the burn. “My legs are still sore,” she said. “It was a hard run, real hard. “My thighs were screaming at me. “It was so windy as well, you felt like you were going to get blown off the top.” Nelson runner Simon Leaning was crowned King of the Withers after winning the race with a time of 44 minutes 10 seconds. Craig crossed the finish line just 12 seconds later, at 44 mins 22 seconds, smashing the women’s record of 45.28 held by Olympic triathlete Andrea Hewitt. “It was awesome to win again. “It’s a good challenge and it’s different from squash. “It’s good to be able to do it in summer, when it’s my off-season.” Craig has competed in the event three times and also won the junior title. This year, she was more excited to win the prize beach towel than the trophy, as she now has a collection of three. “It makes my year to win the towel because they are these brightly coloured beach towels and each one’s got the date on it. “I’ve got blue, green and now pink. “I also got a trophy, but it’s more the glory of being a queen.” After being named Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year last year, 2014 is shaping up to be a big one for Craig.

All Black Dan Carter spent New Year holidaying in the Marlborough Sounds.

Carter holidays in the Sounds All Black Dan Carter spent the New Year period holidaying in the Marlborough Sounds and promoting our beautiful region with a series of cheeky photos on his social media sites. The rugby star, who was on vacation with family, posted pictures of himself on Facebook and Ins-

tagram clay bird shooting while wearing a pink onesie, posing with empty champagne bottles and doing dive bombs off a boat. Carter said he “lost a bet and had to wear the hideous pink onesie”, in a photo which attracted more than 12,000 ‘likes’ on Facebook and Instagram.

“A great way to start the new year. Onesie clay bird shooting followed by some bombs off the boat,” he posted on January 1. “Love the Marlborough sounds. “Hope everyone is enjoying 2014 so far.”
