Billy Connolly will stop in Blenheim for one night during his “High Horse” comedy tour in April and May of this year. MGC girls perform for 100 million Seven of Blenheim’s Highland dancers are preparing for the experience of a lifetime when they travel to Edinburgh for the Royal Military Tattoo. The 15-16 year old Marlborough Girls College students have been chosen in New Zealand’s 36-person team to dance there later this year. Rebecca Healy, Georgia Marshall, Kelsey Smith, Ashana Rengasamy, Grace Owen, Hannah Roche and Morgan Vile leave on July 25 to perform at Edinburgh’s iconic castle in front of about 9000 people per performance. Performances begin on August 1 and end on August 23. The team will perform once each weekday, twice on Saturdays and gets Sundays off. Team member Rebecca Healy said she had mixed emotions about the trip. “I’m excited but I’m nervous too ... I’ll probably miss mum. “It’ll be good to meet new people though.” Team-mate Ashana Rengasamy said she was most looking forward to the performances. “It’s such a big event. There will be seven to eight thousand people there per night, plus the TV audience.” About 100 million people worldwide tune in to watch the Tattoo. After a New Zealand team was invited to the event, each team member needed to compile a DVD audition with three different dances on it as part of their selection application. When the team was finalised in July 2013 preparations began. Team members still have to sit their Highland exams incorporating dance and dress theory, and fundraise $6000 each for the trip. Marlborough Civic Theatre general manager Alana Cairns said Billy’s visit was a big boost for Blenheim. “We have worked hard to get him here, but it will be worth it. “10 minutes was all it took 12 years ago to sell out his show, so we are expecting a busy time when tickets go on sale.”

Renee to perform on home ground first By Glenise Dreaver Renee Maurice, the 23-yearold winner of New Zealand’s Got Talent in 2013, will make a triumphant return to her home ground with the first concert of her national tour in Blenheim on March 7. The former Picton entertainer came to national attention in 2007 when, as an ambassador for the disabled entertainers of Star Jam, she and Jono Heaps co-wrote “Queen of Hearts”, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. That EMI release reached 45th on the national charts. Then she wrote and sang the title song for the acclaimed 2008 Theatre South production of War Child, written and directed by Gavin Richards of Blenheim. Now she has over 200 songs and three musicals to her credit, though in New Zealand’s Got Talent she sang other singers’ covers.

That included Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”, Bette Midler’s “The Wind Beneath My Wings” and finally “I Am Telling You” from the musical Dream Girls. There was special support for the semi-final. When designer

She also received a $100,000 prize (“Before tax!) and a Toyota RAV 4. Renee’s national success is truly remarkable given that she spent most of 2010 cheating death. An almost routine callback to Auckland Hospital for keyhole surgery to manage her existing heart condition became a medical nightmare. She then came to Picton four days after her discharge for her brother’s wedding. “That was not to be,” said Renee ruefully, as a massive infection in the wound saw her hospitalised at Wairau, then ransferred to Wellington Hospital’s vascular unit, then to Hutt Hospital’s plastic surgery unit. After “numerous” surgeries it has been only in the last six months she has stopped the pain medication for the nerve damage. “But I am doing what I love. If I gave up, I would be giving up on myself.” The final details of Renee’s national tour are still being sorted, but the first concert is here where it all started. “Of course. Of course.” It will be held at 7.30pm at the Clubs of Marlborough on March 7, with tickets sold from there at $15 a head.

‘Ratbags’ dump at Blue Door By Celeste Lodewyk “A big ‘No thanks’ to the ratbags who left us an even bigger pile of junk over the weekend,” said The Blue Door manager Bronwen Demmocks. Twice in one week the Blue Door Charity Shop on Charles Street has been treated as a dumping ground for rubbish. Bronwen expressed her dismay at the dumping by citing the cost involved in cleaning up and disposing of the rubbish. “The Blue Door has supported community organisations with more than quarter of a million dollars over the years it has been in operation, and it could have been a whole lot more if we didn’t have to keep paying to dump other people’s rubbish,” she said. The Psychoactive Substances Regulatory Authority has withdrawn five psychoactive products from the market. They are ‘AK47’, ‘Anarchy’, ‘Karma’, ‘Northern Lights Primo’ and ‘Voodoo.’ The ban is effective immediately. There are now only 41 products sold on the market. John Marris passes away Well known businessman John Marris sadly passed away on Sunday. Mr Marris was a successful pioneer of the Marlborough grape industry and was involved in a number of high profile developments including the Westwood Business Park in Springlands. He recently stood down as Chairman of the Marlborough Research Centre Trust which he had been a long term supporter of since it established in the early 1980’s. His funeral will be held on Saturday.

Omaka set for champs By Celeste Lodewyk Are men or women better at precision landing? This is the question posed by promoters of the 2014 Healthy Bastards Bush Pilot Champs set to kick off this Saturday at Omaka Airfield. This will be the second year that this event is held after being launched by Marlborough Aero Club president Craig Anderson and is New Zealand’s only ‘Step, Take-Off and Landing’ competition. The competition has three categories; Light, medium and heavy and involves pilots having to take off and land in the shortest distance possible. Last year’s competition saw 57 pilots from all over NZ enter and to date more than 60 have already registered for Saturday’s event, including two female pilots. “We may even have more entries yet, but so far it’s looking really to be a great event. “We have pilots coming from as far as Pukekohe to Invercargill,” a spokesperson said. The public is encouraged to come along and watch the action from 10:30am. A designated parking area will be provided and people will be at the gate to direct cars. A BBQ will be run by the Marlborough Aero Club’s Young Eagles, so take along the family and enjoy the various aircraft competing throughout the day. SPCA relaunches with new team Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The Marlborough SPCA has relaunched itself following some “hard decisions” that had to be made toward the end of last year. SPCA regional manager Geoff Sutton told the Sun Marlborough SPCA underwent a restructuring late last year and now will be focusing on “fulfilling our animal welfare response”. “SPCA Marlborough had to address a lack of funds to sustain what was previously offered, and as a result we restructured in order to address a financial deficit. “This included restructuring existing staff with new hours and a new centre manager being appointed. “We are now focusing our resources on our core SPCA activity including responding to

animals that are sick, injured or abused, rather than taking in surplus animals and unwanted pets. “We are not shutting our doors on helping, and if it’s within our capability we will do what we can but the Marlborough centre will be primarily focusing on animal welfare,” Geoff said. Wellington SPCA inspector and qualified veterinarian nurse Kaycee Polkinghorne has now taken up the role as centre manager, a move she said has been “really exciting”. “I had never visited Marlborough until I came for the job interview, it’s such a beautiful region and taking up this new opportunity has been an exciting step,” she grinned. Kaycee’s role will include managing the centre as well as all inspection work and

emergency response. Kaycee will also be seeking and applying for grants and fundraising opportunities. Another new face is that of SPCA Marlborough animal attendant and qualified veterinarian Charlotte Patterson-Green who joined the team last December. Supporting them is a “solid” team including dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly for the centre. “The team is incredible, willing to do whatever,” Kaycee said. SPCA Marlborough is also looking to establish a new eight-person committee and is seeking interest from anyone with experience in areas such as business, fundraising, accounting and law. Bus shelter nears completion The controversial new $160,000 bus shelter at the Picton i-Site had the last panes of glass fixed to the roof yesterday.

The project was given the nod last year despite concerns raised by some Marlborough District Councillors and members of the public over the cost.

Pippins in Picton Tracy McMullan of Picton has started a Pippins group for girls five to seven years of age. Pippins are the youngest Guiding group who meet every Monday from 3.30pm to 5pm at St Joseph’s School in Otago Street.

They start for the year on February 3. “The girls do all sorts of fun things such as crafts like making fruit sticks and decorated pencil holders, singing songs and playing games. “They also learn how to work

Blenheim Police say a 16-year-old driver’s inexperience, and illegal modifications to the vehicle he was driving were likely contributors to a serious accident south of Seddon on Saturday. Arrests At 8.30am on Friday, a 23-year-old unemployed male was arrested for failing to comply with a Court order in that he failed to attend a programme as part of his sentence. He was held in custody and appeared in Court later that day. At 3.15pm the same day, a 16-year-old female and her 15-year-old female associate were caught shoplifting at the Warehouse. They had taken $452.26 worth of items by removing tags off clothing and trying to leave the store. Both were referred to the Blenheim Youth section. At 10.30pm a 34-year-old unemployed male was taken into custody

travelling north. The Nelson woman suffered multiple serious trauma injuries and was airlifted to Christchurch hospital. Sergeant Barrie Greenall said the driver lost control on a straight section of highway in dry conditions. The helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic was assisted by the Blenheim St John Ambulance crew who had responded to the call at 2.10pm. The 16-year-old, who suffered moderate face and hand injuries, was taken by St John Ambulance to Wairau Hospital.

These two were part of a group of youths who have damaged four vehicles parked on Eltham Road, walking up the top of the vehicles, denting the bonnets and roofs. They were all referred to the Blenheim Youth Section. At 4.10am a 29-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for giving false details and driving on Kinross Street while his licence was suspended. He will appear in the Blenheim District Court on February 12. At 9pm a 58-year-old sickness beneficiary was arrested in Renwick for being in possession of an offensive weapon. He was to appear in the Blenheim District Court on Monday January 27.

Orca visits thrill for Sounds beachgoers By Adam Poulopoulos Locals enjoying the sunshine at beaches around the Sounds got more than they paid for when about 30 orca came to say hello. Three pods were sighted during the day on Saturday, including male, female and young orca. Momorangi Bay Camp Manager Helen Foley said it was the first time she had seen a pod like the one that came into view. “We’ve had them through here before but not that many.

“There were about 10 or 12 in the pod with a few young ones. “They also seemed to hang around. They went over the other side of the bay and came back again. You could see them for a good hour.” She said guests were captivated as the animals started swimming and splashing about in their view at about 5pm. “They provided great entertainment for the campers. “We had them lining up along the jetty and the foreshore. Some went out in their boats.” Out on the water, Dolphin

Watch and Nature Tours head guide Ailie Suzuki said customers saw the orca playing, mating, feeding and generally socialising during the morning. “It was like National Geographic out there. “It was just incredible. Everyone was in awe.” In the past, orca and other dolphins have been hurt by irresponsible boat drivers, but Miss Suzuki said that was not the case this time. “We were actually really impressed with everyone’s behaviour because quite often

people get overexcited. “We’ve seen some terrible behaviour. People just plough into them.” DOC biodiversity ranger Aubrey Tai said the orca behaviour was regular and seasonal, and they were probably brought to the area by mating and opportunistic feeding. However he agreed the numbers were high. “This is quite impressive. We sporadically get them coming in but not this number, and they were close to the harbour mouth.”

Cruise business a growing one By Glenise Dreaver Three extra cruise ships have come into Picton Harbour this year, providing an extra boost to local businesses. The story began on October 17, when the 2000 plus passenger capacity Sea Princess came into Shakespeare Bay after bad weather in the south of the South Island. This brings the total number of cruise ships coming into Picton harbour for the season to 19, 16 of them scheduled. Another six vessels have been, or will do a scenic cruise in Queen Charlotte Sounds. “The picture already emerging for next year is very optimistic,” says Carmen Gimpl general manager operations at Port Marlborough. Thirty two ship visits are scheduled so far for next season. “And 19 of them are big vessels, some of which will be carrying 3200 passengers plus crew. In total we are expecting 51,000 passengers plus the crew members.”

Dear Ed, I agree totally with Frank Henry (22 Jan) that a bypass is needed for Blenheim for south bound traffic that have no intention of stopping. A bypass would ease traffic burden on Grove Road, Main Street and roundabouts and on the Grove Road bridge over the Opawa River where traffic becomes one way when two trucks approach. The politics of roading should not matter. MDC should be a strong advocate for a bypass. Foreshore submissions heard By Glenise Dreaver Democracy is never cheap, which may console the members of the review team who met in Picton yesterday to hear twelve oral submissions on the draft Picton Foreshore Reserve Management Plan. The four councillors and the submitters were matched by five council staff and one member of the public. There had been 89 written submissions over a range of topics but only twelve chose to speak to them. Elisha Oldridge, council reserves planner, said many were on preserving open space on the foreshore, including suggestions about more picnic tables, barbecues and seats. “And there were a couple against the whaling extension to the museum.” In her oral submission Beryl Bowers mentioned the disappointing response to the meetings and said they had been at difficult times. She displayed photographs of overseas water installations for children that included fountains and would be suitable for preschoolers. “The current pool can get full of duck doings and it has slippery sides.”

She mentioned the need for better lighting, a common concern for submitters, as were problems with the old changing sheds, a known trouble spot. The lone member of the public, who had not planned to speak to his written submission, did so during a gap in proceedings. He suggested that instead of talking about

a whaling extension to the existing museum, and a separate national whaling museum, they should look at the section over the road where rental cars are kept. “We should be looking at a modern two or three storey building to serve this concept.” Clr Trevor Hook, on the committee chaired by Clr Terry Sloan, with the two other Sounds

Youth Expo in the Pipeline By Adam Poulopoulos Preparations are continuing for a meet encouraging young people to get involved in extra-curricular activities. The Youth Expo Festival of Opportunities will take place at Stadium 2000 on Sunday February 16. Between 2pm and 5pm families will have the chance to receive more information about sport and recreational organisations in the area. Information booths run by each organisation will be set up, along with interactive activities

including basketball, hockey and table tennis. A kapa haka group will perform, and negotiations to attract other acts are ongoing. Instructions to arrange the expo came through the Marlborough District Council and several different organisations are giving a hand in organising it. Marlborough Youth Service advisor Val Heggie said it gave people the chance to see what was out there. “It’s for families but we’re calling it a youth expo. “Hopefully it gives them some-

thing to do and a chance to consider different types of activities.” She said they were hoping more than a dozen organisations would turn up, and visitors would be able to see a good variety. She said a successful expo would lead to more in the future. “If we get this off the ground we’d like to do it again on a regular basis, either annually or biannually.” Organisations can register their interest in appearing at the expo by contacting Val or Kat on 5782886.

Blenheim next stop for John the Entertainer By Adam Poulopoulos Any concert of John the Entertainer’s can be referred to in the same breath as that proverbial box of chocolates - you never know what you are going to get. The cover artist, real name John Brown, will be playing his tribute gig at the Clubs of Marlborough bar on Friday night. It begins at 7:30pm, and admission is free. John covers songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, so he said punters should expect anything from classic rock to ballroom to country. “I’ve got about 800 songs I can pick from depending on the crowd. “You want to see people line dancing to ballroom and the classic hits. Trust Deed Review The Trustees of the Marlborough Electric Power Trust propose to make amendments to the Deed document to add clarity regarding the director and trustee roles and responsibilities, to improve the logical flow of the document, to correct some errors, to provide express authority for the trustees to effect liability insurance and to improve the way the Trust can assist the Company. Cycling Carnival great success By Adam Poulopoulos Spectators and riders alike flocked to Athletic Park’s flat racing track for the Speights Ale House Blenheim Summer Track Carnival last weekend. The carnival was held to help under-17 riders get more experience, particularly those heading to the New Zealand Track Champs in March. 4 0 u nder-17 r iders f rom Blenheim, Nelson and Canterbury competed at the event, while under-15 and open grades were also held. said the meeting had been wellreceived. “It was very successful - all the riders enjoyed it. “The competition was fantastic, the spectators were fantastic, and there’s a real opportunity for it to grow.” Ethan Batt and Michaela Kerr won the under 17 grades, while Niels Van Antwerpen and Shanne Fulton were the top under-15 riders. New Zealand representative Callum Saunders was one of the more recognisbale faces to attend the event.

Spencer said the 18-year-old’s presence at the event was invaluable. “The buzz around him with the little kids was fantastic.” The meet ended with an Italian pursuit race, where riders of all ages formed into teams and shared the track. “The little kids got to ride with the superstars,” Spencer said. Last weekend’s carnival was the first time the event had been held. Spencer said being able to hold cycling events in the region was crucial, as it saved riders having to travel to Invercargill to use their

velodrome. The track was fixed at the start of the season, and he said he hoped a grandstand would be built before next year’s event. He hoped older Marlborough riders like Saunders, Jason Allen and the Karwowski brothers would be around to mentor the younger ones. “Hopefully they come back to support us and bring the youth through. “There’s definitely talent coming through - it’s just about recognising and supporting it.”

Duathlon The Matt Heagney Memorial Marlborough Mens La-Z-Boy Duathlon is back again, and late entries are still being taken. The event takes place on Friday, beginning at 5.30pm. Competitors are challenged to run or walk a combined six kilometres and cycle 11 kilometres. Entry is open to all males 13 years and over. Volleyballers hone skills By Adam Poulopoulos Some of Marlborough’s budding volleyballers assembled last week as they aimed to upskill ahead of the new season. The two-day volleyfest training camp was run by several local volleyball coaches and players, and concluded on Friday at Stadium 2000. 21 students from years 8-10 attended the two-day course in an effort to equip them better for the increased intensity of college volleyball. Over the two-day course the players learned to serve, receive, set and spike the ball. Coaches included New Zealand rep Abbey Greenwood, Marlborough Girls College coach Alister McKenzie and 2013 Marlborough Girls’ head girl Georgie Crawford. This year is the second in succession the meet has been held. McKenzie said while the players were talented, they still have a lot

to learn. “There’s a huge importance on events like this because most of the kids play the game but they’ve not been taught how to play it properly.” He said he could already see their skills improving. Marlborough Volleyball junior game development officer Nicky Bain said it was crucial the players had the skills to play at college level. “It gets a bit more serious. They play quite differently at primary and their skills need to be a bit more developed.” She said Marlborough had a strong volleyball culture, and that helped them in getting young players the best possible help. “We’re real lucky in Marlborough we’ve got quite a few people that can help us.” Junior college volleyball resumes on February 20 with a muster at Stadium 2000. Games begin on February 27.

The NZ King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons have continued their unbeaten start to the season with a pulsating 4-3 win over Team Wellington at Trafalgar Park. Youngster Sam Wilson scored the winner in stoppage time to settle a match played in torrential rain on a pitch inundated with large puddles. With the result the Falcons have gone clear top of the ASB Youth League southern conference. Blenheim locals Carl ConnorMcClean and Omar Guardiola both played a part in the match, the latter winning a penalty and hitting the post in the leadup to Wilson’s winner. The Falcons’ next assignment is a trip to Palmerston North to play YoungHeart Manawatu on Sunday.
