‘Best crowd ever’

Festival committee chairperson Lucy Walter described the well-behaved and pleasant crowd as the ‘best ever’.

Mum touched by offers of help

By Kristy Martin Solo mum Lisa Taylor has been inundated with offers for help since her plight was published in the Sun newspaper last week.

Following a major operation, the Blenheim woman cannot lift her 15-month-old son Toby and can only get minimal financial assistance from Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) to pay for childcare.

She can’t place Toby in his high chair to feed him, or even lift him into his crib following a hernia operation at Wairau Hospital.

She has had to feed him in a car seat on the floor and sleep him in her bed, but even then he has to pull himself up to climb in.

Scores of kind-hearted members of the community have since approached Ms Taylor and offered to help with the care of her young son.

Friends and strangers have also offered assistance with cleaning, shopping and gardening.

“I’m really, truly grateful,” Ms Taylor said.

“It’s lovely to know there are very kind people out there.

“It’s just sad that it takes something like this to highlight it.”

The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has provided Ms Taylor with home help, which means she has someone visit and do her cleaning for a few hours each week.

They have not yet responded to queries by the Sun about whether any further help is available.

aged her to apply for emergency home help.

While there was no guarantee she would be approved, she could alternatively get an emergency

Blenheim Sun still number one The Blenheim Sun is still the largest circulating newspaper in Marlborough, according to the latest ABC Newspaper Audit results, released on Friday.

The Sun’s Wednesday and Friday editions had the largest circulations in the region, with an ABC audit of 18,535 copies twice a week.

T he Aust ra l ia n- owned Marlborough Express has taken another hit to its circulation copies, down 8.78 per cent on the previous

year’s figures.

It had the second largest percentage drop of any daily newspapers in the South Island.

The Sun requested comment from the Express’s commercial manager, Vanessa Watson, who declined to answer our questions about the drop in circulation - the latest ABC Audit showing The Express at 7009 We paid copies.

A sellout event at Brancott Estate, the 30th festival, held last Saturday, has been hailed a great success.

Showcasing the best in Marlborough wine and food, and with musical acts and fashion to top it off, the occasion attracted 8500 people, including event staff.

Iva Lamkum and The Phoenix Foundation kept the crowds entertained, but it was the New Zealand Army Band that had everybody talking.

“They were absolutely amazing,” Ms Walter said.

“I think people were expecting brass band songs, so to hear them performing a Bon Jovi number just blew everyone away.”

The Beatgirls topped off the musical acts and had huge crowds dancing during their set at the end of the day.

Cooking demonstrations by renowned Aussie chefs and wine tutorials by local viticulturists proved popular and, after some initial concern, the event was blessed with Marlborough’s famous sunshine.

A fun new addition to the event was the Kathryn Wilson’s Stilettos in the Vines catwalk show, followed by the ever-popular Thomas’s Fashion in the Vines competition.

A live television broadcast from the festival by Australia’s ‘Weekend Today’ show was beamed to up to 800,000 Aussie homes.

Destination Marlborough secured the Channel 9 programme to broadcast live weather segments from the event, following on from the network’s December broadcast from Pelorus Bridge that coincided with the release of the The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston said weather presenter Emma Freedman also did live crosses from Peppers Portage Resort on Sunday, promoting the Marlborough Sounds and the Queen Charlotte Track.

A number of local faces featured in the broadcast.

“The stars were all aligned for us this weekend,” Ms Johnston said.

“If we’d had to pay for that advertising space it would have cost $165,000 (for 12 three-minute crosses).”

Ms Johnston said she was grateful for the support from Tourism New Zealand and Air New Zealand, who had paid for the television crew to come over.

“That was the only way we could make this happen.”

Police have arrested three men over a $30,000 burglary at a Blenheim house.

A 32-year-old Motueka man, a 20-year-old Motueka man and a 30-year-old Nelson man have been charged in relation to the theft of the property, including a laser lighting machine and fog machine, from a Hutcheson Street home on Monday.

A member of the public reported suspicious behaviour and recorded the registration number of the vehicle involved.

The vehicle was located later in the day by police in the Nelson area and the stolen goods recovered.

Porn scandal An amateur porn scandal involving three young Blenheim women has made national headlines.

The three women, aged in their late teens and early 20s, contacted police and are threatening legal action after a video of them performing webcam sex went viral on Facebook. They also said they were seeking psychiatric help as a result of all the attention.

Police are investigating whether an offence has been committed including harrassment or intimidation, but said they weren’t looking at how the 90-minute video was made.

Cyber experts have weighed in, warning people to be careful what they put online.

Quality and convenience within a caring community in Redwood Police said Wine and Food Festival revellers were well behaved.

Police made no arrests at the 30th annual Wine and Food Festival and have hailed the event as a great success.

Marlborough Area Commander, Inspector Simon Feltham, said intoxication levels were down and that officers who had worked the event for many years described it as the ‘best one ever’.

He praised the efforts of stall holders for their responsible service of alcohol and those of security staff, who refused entry to an underage patron working for police.

“We’re very pleased with the event,” Insp Feltham said.

“We see it as a great success.

“The controlled purchase operation couldn’t go ahead because the underage volunteer was refused entry at the gate, which was great.”

While there were no arrests at the venue, Brancott Estate, there were a handful of drink-drivers picked up later on and seven arrests in Blenheim on

Saturday night.

One drink-driver was caught leaving event, while four others were detected by booze bus that evening.

Police were also contacted by a member of the public who was concerned about one driver’s behaviour.

The man was subsequently stopped and recorded a breath alcohol level of 1779 mic per litre of breath.

The legal limit is currently 400 mic per litre of breath.

Insp Feltham said it was the highest reading he had come across during his career in Police.

While this was disappointing, behaviour around the licensed venues in town was generally alright, with only a few minor disturbances.

Police believe the 18+ age restriction, the availability of food and water at the festival and the responsible actions of the stall holders led to a trouble-free environment.

Don’t rush decision on colleges, says mayor

By Kristy Martin Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman is urging the ministry of education to not be hasty when it comes to the decision about the two colleges.

He is advocating for an examination of further options, including a closer look at a ‘greenfields’ site.

While the first round of public consultation has ended and submissions received, Mr Sowman says “finding a piece of land and building two new colleges” is one option that needs further consideration.

“The ministry has given us a bit of a lead as far as options are concerned. “(But) I’m encouraging people to look at a greenfields site.

“Some people want to retain the old colleges, but maybe there is a new option.”

The option of rebuilding the Marlborough Boys’ College at the site of the girls’ college, on McLauchlan Street, has drawn criticism, with many people con-

cerned that the location, which has just one playing field, is too small.

“If they need to build the colleges next to each other, then we need to look at a greenfields site.

“The challenge is to find a suitable site.”

But this was not necessarily his

personal preference.

“Personally I would’ve liked to have seen suitable amounts of money put into doing up the old sites.”

One potential new site was land owned by Colonial Vineyards and the Corlett Family Trust near the Omaka airfield.

Mr Sowman said he has met with local MPs to try to get some assurance that the minister of education will allow adequate time on the project, which has major consequences for the future of this region.

“The ministry has to allow us to go through the process.

“This is a real opportunity for Marlborough and it has to be done right.”

Almost 350 submissions were received by independent consultant Janet Kelly, who is compiling a report.

A second round of consultation is expected to begin after May, once the board of trustees for both schools and the ministry have considered the report.

Public to have say on legal highs

By Kristy Martin Marlborough District councillors are upset they don’t have the power to ban legal highs.

They say the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013 leaves them with inadequate power to control the sale of these substances, including synthetic cannabis.

“I don’t think anyone supports legal highs,” said Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman.

“People are saying council should ban them, but we don’t have that authority.”

Under the legislation, councils have been given the ability to make local policy – a Local Approved Products Policy – to control where these substances may be sold.

Licences for the sale of legal highs are issued through the Ministry of Health, by the Psychoactive Substances Regulatory Authority.

Councillors at the last Community and Finance Committee meeting said they were unhappy about being asked to create a regime to cover the sale of a product they opposed.

However they agreed that a draft policy on legal highs should be put into the public area for discussion.

The draft suggests that retail outlets should be limited to the town’s central retail area (Blenheim’s CB Zone/ Primary Shopping Area) and located at least 100 metres apart from any other outlet selling the product.

The policy also specifies that any such premises must not be within 100 metres of a school, playground or church.

Mr Sowman said council was aware of the harm psychoactive substances could cause and urged members of the public to make it known if they favoured a total ban.

Public submissions will be taken from the end of the month.

New volunteers trained for RDA

By Adam Poulopoulos Those receiving therapy through horse riding can be assured they’re in good hands.

The Blenheim branch of the New Zealand Riding for the Disabled Association has been training 28 new volunteers ahead of therapy resuming next week.

The volunteers learn to help people with disabilities improve balance, posture, selfdiscipline and social skills among other things.

Danielle Murphy, who has been involved with the RDA for four years, said the work was rewarding.

“It’s a great job. I didn’t know whether to work with horses or kids after school, and I kind of got the best of both.

“It’s really cool to see the progress people make.”

Blenheim RDA manager Roslein Wilkes said all the volunteers needed to be trained the same way.

“It’s really important they’re all leading the horses the same way.

“We don’t want the horse confused with several different leaders.”

She said people of any age could benefit from riding horses.

“We had a girl at 14 months who couldn’t sit, and by 18 months old she was taking her first step.”

“You’re using a horse, which has the nearest thing to a human walk. They produce movement in the rider which helps the brain to learn how to walk.”

Ms Wilkes said those with physical, mental, emotional or learning impairments could be helped.

The RDA is always looking for new volunteers, and Ms Wilkes said anybody could do so regardless of previous experience with horses or the disabled.

By Kristy Martin An extra 800 passengers will be able to fly between Blenheim and Auckland from this week.

Air New Zealand has increased capacity by using larger aircraft to service the route.

From Monday, the 19-seat Beech 1900D aircraft was replaced by a 50-seat Q300 aircraft, adding almost 800 seats to the route per week.

Some aircraft operating between Blenheim and Wellington will also be serviced by the larger aircraft.

Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston said the increased demand was a good sign.

The added seats were a win for Marlborough, and would no doubt have a flow-on effect for local businesses.

She couldn’t say what had led to the increased demand, or whether more people were travelling for business or leisure, but noted the airline had responded to more people searching to fly between the two airports.

Marlborough Airport chief executive Dean Heiford said Air New Zealand had been considering the route for a while and that the upgrade in service was “all good.”

The flights would continue until demand was no longer there, he said.

might lead to changes in the structure of the airport’s fire brigade, which is currently operating in office hours only after being scaled back last year.

“While we are still currently meeting the requirements, if these flights continue we might breach the legislative cap in the future.

“It becomes a numbers game.”

The airport is set for expansion and plans for the new terminal were currently being developed.

Mr Heiford said while there was no concern about the safety of passengers, the fire service might have to be upgraded in future to meet increased demand.

More than 85 people in the Marlborough and Nelson region will receive elective surgery in the next five months, Health Minister Tony Ryall has announced.

Thanks to a $10 million investment, 1800 extra patients across New Zealand, including 86 Nelson Marlborough patients, will receive elective surgery in the next five months.

“This government has lifted the number of Nelson Marlborough patients receiving elective surgery from 5824 in 2007/08 to 6054 last year,” Mr Ryall said.

“This has been a huge increase of 230 people – but we want even more Nelson Marlborough patients to benefit from surgery.

“Elective surgery makes a real difference to patients and their families – it reduces pain, increases independence and improves their quality of life.

“We have identified specialties where public hospitals can do even better and every district health board will receive extra funding to provide even more patients with the surgery they need.

“The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board will receive almost $500,000 in extra funding.

“The DHB is using the extra funding for Ear, Nose and Throat surgery, General surgery, Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology.

“This increased funding will build on the record numbers of elective operations achieved by the National-led Government,” said Mr Ryall.

Unfair treatment?

Dear Ed, Once again we see the huge difference in the levels of the playing field in relation to the beer and wine industries.

In a local paper last Friday it stated there were nine wineries caught in a sting for selling to underage persons, punishment a $500 fine only.

No names mentioned, What about the sting to the beer bars and taverns?

Some very unfortunate bars who were caught had their names splashed across the papers, some four times.

The unfortunate person doing the foul deed had their license taken away for a month.

The venues in question had to close for a day.

And with the new laws coming into force will have this forever on their record with an increased fee to pay when their license is renewed.

In last Sunday’s Star Times, splashed across the front page we see a supermarket lost their license for a week and was fined heavily in another sting.

Their name was revealed as well due to the selling of beer.

I am all for keeping within the law, but let’s have a level playing field.

One rule for all please.

One Blenheim Sun delivery boy made a strange discovery last month when he found a wasp nest inside a letterbox.

William Sabiston, 11, was delivering the paper with brother Nicholas, 9, along his usual route.

One day the Bohally Intermediate School pupil noticed a wasp nest, roughly the size of a doorknob.

The letterbox was such that the mail was taken out of the bottom and put in the top, so the homeowner may never have known it was there.

“After a bit I plucked up the courage and went in,” William said.

“We said to him ‘there’s quite a large wasp nest in the letterbox’ and handed him the paper.

When he went back a few days later,

the nest was gone, and on Friday the homeowner dropped into the Sun office and left a reward for William.

And what is William going to spend the money on?

“Ice-creams.”

Reflections on a life of loyal service As he retires after forty five years at Cuddon Engineering, Neville Patchett speaks to Glenise Dreaver about the changes he has seen On January 27, 1964, Neville Patchett of Blenheim celebrated his sixteenth birthday and he started work at Cuddon’s Engineering the very next day.

“The Boss” (WGG Cuddon) wouldn’t let Neville begin his refrigeration apprenticeship until he was 16, so he was there on the first day he was eligible.

On January 28, 2014, Neville retired as manager of the refrigeration department after a working life that has spanned fifty years.

Forty five of those years were spent at Cuddons.

Neville did take some time out after his apprenticeship was finished and he had spent some years in Cuddon’s retail shop in Alfred Street.

He worked out of the building now used by Marlborough’s community services.

Neville said they sold and serviced whiteware and other goods like TVs, stereos, lawn mowers and appliances of all sorts. The showroom also included a Value-Rite hardware outlet.

But he decided to take a break so he did a couple of seasons in the freezing works, then a couple of years in the grape industry.

“They were pulling out the Muller Thurgau vines that had fallen out of favour and sauvignon blanc was being planted instead.“ But Blenheim is a small town. So when he heard his former boss John May was retiring as manager of the refrigeration section, he went back to John Cuddon Jnr and asked if they were interested in having him back.

They would, and a few months later when John May retired, Neville was appointed manager.

“John was at my retirement party on January 28. He was only 36 years old when I started as a 16-year-old and it’s funny to think that now he’s going to be 86 this year and I’m 66.”

All his old bosses were at his party, all except the late WGG, who had established the firm over 75 years ago.

“WGG was my mentor. I looked up to him and he was one of the big influences in my life. A very nice, very astute man.

“He knew all the 120-odd staff by name and

walked around the factory once a week and talked to everyone.

“He was also an adventurer and a bit of an inventor.”

Some of WGG’s inventions were used at the Grassmere salt works, as were the whaling harpoons he designed.

There were also some very innovative agricultural products.

“The Cuddons catch phrase was “Innovation”.

“And it still is.”

He pointed out that the constant refining of the freeze dry processes they began developing in the sixties sees them still as a market leader, with their product regarded as superior product worldwide.

“Yet in the early days no one understood it.”

Most of the freeze dry development had been done in secret before Neville started with the firm. “They worked out of WGG’s garage, behind closed doors. But I was lucky to be there at the start.”

Heat pumps, which use the reverse refrigeration process, are now a big growth area for the firm said Neville.

It was a big thrill to see quite a few of the firm’s local competitors celebrating his career at his farewell, including Gordon and Glen Herkt, John Phibbs and Allan Martella.

“They all trained at Cuddons. We all knew each other.”

The social club had been very active in the early years said Neville.

“Our mid year and end of year celebrations were so popular we had people ringing up and wanting to know if they could come. Numbers had to be restricted so each staff member was able to bring their partner and one other couple.

“We also played very social cricket, and had picnics at White’s Bay and Pelorus Bridge.

“Everyone got on.

“Cuddons has been a very fun place, an enjoyable place to work.”

But it was time to go.

“You never know how long the piece of string is...”

“WGG was my mentor.”

Fire ban in effect In the weeks heading through high summer Marlborough usually experiences some of its hottest and driest conditions, making it the region’s peak fire risk period.

As of last Thursday a total fire ban has been in place in the Marlborough District Council rural fire zone.

There have already been several outbreaks of fire in the region, some of which have cost property owners dearly, principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara said.

“Any time a gusty west-northwesterly blows the fire risk

increases, particularly in the dry central Marlborough grasslands and tussock country.

“These areas are fuel for fires with large quantities of dead, dry grass and tussock and combined with the lack of rain, high temperatures and wind, it’s a recipe for fast-moving, dangerous fires,” he said.

The ban covers land south of the Wairau River including Rarangi down to the MDC territorial boundary south of Ward, except for the upper Wairau Valley that is administered under the DOC Zone.

The Total Fire Ban will

also cover all urban areas of Renwick, Blenheim, Seddon and Ward.

People can find out more information on the current fire season status and inspect a map of the region showing the fire season in each area at www. mkrfa.com All fires in the open within these areas will be banned including enclosed incinerators, pizza ovens, braziers and solid fuel barbecues.

The only types of fire exempted from this ban are gasfired barbecues.

Writers showcased in new journal

By Adam Poulopoulos Those looking for some light reading, look no further - you may even know some of the authors.

The Marlborough Reader, edited

by Toni Gillan and illustrated by Caroline Della Porta, was launched yesterday.

The journal contains 27 works, mostly short stories and poems, on a spectrum of different topics, including love, happiness, nostalgia and abandonment.

The first issue is 34 pages long and features Marlborough writers ranging from 13 to 96 years old, all with different levels of writing experience.

Ms Gillan said it was her experi-

ences in England during the 1980s that inspired her to start the journal.

“I saw an ad for a competition to write the letter I had always wanted to write but never could, so I wrote about how sad I was my dad couldn’t walk me down the aisle.”

Ms Gillan’s letter was published as runner-up in the competition.

She said emerging writers often needed a helping hand in getting published.

“I got it in my mind that it is very hard for emerging writers to get published, and its getting harder.”

Work must be unpublished and under 1000 words to be considered.

Writers can have published work as long as their work intended for

the journal is unpublished.

Response for the first journal had been strong, with 75 works submitted and 27 published.

“It’s a really good cross-section of work I think,” Ms Gillan said.

Beyond this issue and the next the journal will need more advertising to survive.

The deadline for publication in the next issue is 31 August 2014.

Journals are available at Bookworld for $6, and at cafes and local businesses for reading in-store.

Five free copies are available at the Blenheim Sun office at 72 High Street.

Picton prepares for American visitors

By Adam Poulopoulos Picton Little Theatre is due to get completely rearranged as they welcome their next performers all the way from America.

‘The 7 Person Chair Pyramid High Wire Act’ is stopping off for two shows on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 February.

T he show is being brought over by Der Vorfureffekt Theatre from Philadelphia.

The stage set required for the show is so large the audience will be asked to sit on what is usually the stage.

Writer Donna Sellinger said the show would be unique.

“It all happens on a stage with a wide variety of visual tricks.

“I can definitely say you’ve never seen anything like it.”

The show is set in Siberia, and revolves around Charles Darwin’s pursuit of the Yeti.

The group were originally invited to perform at the Fringe Festival and Camp A Low Hum in Wellington.

Ms Sellinger said leaving the freezing cold for

the Marlborough sun was an exciting opportunity.

“To tour in February in the States is very hard, so coming here was very appealing.

“We thought ‘if we’re going to New Zealand we thought we should go to the most beautiful parts.”

Theatre manager Bruce

Anderson was delighted the tour was stopping in the area.

“It’s great to have an international act touring New Zealand playing in such a small theatre.

“I like the fact it’s not one actor on stage - it’s three actors coming from another county.”

The group has been on tour since February 3, and they had to start by reworking their electrical equipment and rebuilding the stage.

They head to Nelson and the Catlins next.

The tour finishes in early March.

Falcons on Fire The NZ King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons have increased their lead at the top of the ASB Youth League southern conference to eight points after two more victories in the past week.

They came from two goals down to beat Southern United 3-2 at Trafalgar Park on Sunday, their sixth win in a row.

This followed their victory on Waitangi Day, when Blenheim locals Carl Connor-McClean and Omar Guardiola scored in a 2-0 win over Canterbury United.

The results have put them eight points clear at the top of the conference with four games to go.

They play Heartland Wairarapa in Masterton on Saturday.

Cityfitness fundraising effort Cityfitness has exceeded even their own expectations by raising $20,000 for the Heart Foundation in the last four months.

Cityfitness took their mobile gym around the country, encouraging people to take part in their Get Active challenge.

About 15,000 people around the country signed up to the challenge, and a proportion of the signing-up fees were donated to the Heart Foundation.

Altogether 100 million calories were burnt by participants around the country.

The Cityfitness gym stopped in Blenheim on November 13 and 14 last year.

Summer Runners Series The Summer Runners Series has its next installment tomorrow at 6pm at the Wither Hills.

Runners are to meet at the Rifle Range Place carpark, and everyone is welcome to participate.

These runs are non-competitive.

The cost is $2 per week or $20 for the season. Families for the season are $25.

Cricket World Cup trophy in town

By Adam Poulopoulos One year out from the Cricket World Cup Blenheim had a chance to see the trophy and a New Zealand cricketing icon.

CWC ambassador Sir Richard Hadlee stopped in Blenheim yesterday with chief executive Therese Walsh and their precious cargo.

They displayed the trophy at the annual New Zealand Defence Force Inter-Services Cricket Tournament, which began at Horton Park yesterday.

The New Zealand Army, Navy and both the New Zealand and Australian Air Force teams play each other, with the last round of matches tomorrow.

The teams play for two separate Hayden Madsen trophies, named for Flight Lieutenant Hayden Madsen, who died in the 2010 ANZAC Day helicopter crash.

Sir Richard said bringing the CWC trophy to the Defence Force tournament recognised their continued sacrifices.

He said the World Cup was a big deal for New Zealand.

“It’s absolutely massive. We did it well in 1992, and its been a long time since we’ve had it.

“We’re trying to create awareness here in New Zealand...we want the country to get behind us.”

New Zealand has punched above its weight at World Cups, making six semi-finals.

“We’ve had some very good results this summer. It’s as if the game’s been re-energised,” Sir Richard said.

“It’d be nice to go a step further and make a final.”

Ms Walsh said with games evenly split between Australia and New Zealand and the Black Caps’ recent performances, the stars were coming into alignment.

She said Marlburians would have plenty to look forward to, even without any games.

“They’ll be a lot of people heading around the country and this is a great place to stop into.

“It’s beautiful weather we should have all the games here!” she joked.

Nelson is the closest host city to Blenheim, hosting group matches on Feb 16, 19 and March 5 2015.

Hockey programme excites

By Adam Poulopoulos Following high demand for summer training the Future Stars Hockey Development Programme is proving popular among youngsters.

The programme is aimed at anyone from those looking to make rep teams to those just looking to enjoy the game, and it began on Monday.

Training sessions will continue each Monday until March 17.

Hockey Marlborough junior development director Alan Sprosen said the programme would help to prepare them for the future.

“They’re good kids - it’s just about putting time into them.

Several of the kids had started to use training diaries to chart their progress.

“They’re going to get what they deserve,” he said.

He said involving younger coaches helped them and the students.

“They’re the sort players you want to fit in with the young guys.”

Local athletes get set for the pain

By Adam Poulopoulos A healthy Blenheim contingent are making their final preparations in for the Speight’s Coast to Coast this weekend.

Nine from Blenheim are participating in the event, either as individuals or as a team, on Friday and Saturday.

Blenheim Toyota branch manager Scott McDermid is doing the individual event, and said it had been an ambition of his to complete it since seeing athletes like Steve Gurney on the TV. “It’s been on the bucket list as long as I can remember.

“It’s an epic race to get from one side of the country to another of your own esteem.”

McDermid’s training regime since he began in April last year peaked recently at two hours each weekday, then about six hours per day on the weekend.

He said the support from his friends and family had helped immensely.

Friends were still giving him tips on how much to pack for the race, and other tricks.

One of his training partners during that time has been Ian Martella of Callahan Martella electrical.

Martella, who has teamed up with Mike Fitzpatrick from Betta Electrical, said he was feeling a mix of nerves and excitement.

“I’m starting to wonder what we’ve done now!

“The theory is if we enjoy it this year we’ll move into the individual event next year.”

About 800 people from around the world are participating in what is considered one of the world’s premier multisport events.

The course begins at Kumara Beach on the Tasman Sea and finishes on the other side of the island at Sumner Beach on the Pacific Ocean.

Whether as an individual or as a team competitors have to cycle 140 kilometres, run 36kms and kayak 67kms.
