So for deputy mayor Terry Sloan, St Patrick’s Day is one date on the calendar worth celebrating.

“There are two types of people in the world,” Terry says with a grin.

“The Irish and those who wish they were Irish.”

St Paddy’s Day Continued from page 1 Terry and wife Audrey are gearing up for their busiest day of the year at Biddy Kates Irish bar on Market Street.

St Paddy’s Day is next Monday, March 17.

Biddy Kates will be open from 10am until late and Audrey says there will be Irish dishes on the menu, including an all day breakfast and Irish stew, plus entertainment throughout the evening.

Oh, and let’s not forget the Guinness on tap.

“It’s always a good crowd of all age groups, a real cheerful crowd,” Audrey said.

“It will be interesting to see whether it will be as busy this year, with it being on a Monday.

“People do take the day off work for it.

“Everybody’s Irish on St Paddy’s Day,” she laughed.

The popular Irish dancers from Marlborough Dance Centre will be back to strut their stuff on the bar’s wooden floors and the Thieving Gypsy Bastards will provide live music.

There will be hats, T-shirts and other Irish giveaways throughout the day.

Other bars in town will also be celebrating with live entertainment and drink specials.

The Irish dancers will also be performing at Paddy Barry’s on Scott Street.

Paddy’s staff will put on an Irish breakfast from 7.30am and will be handing out prizes for best dressed throughout the day.

There will also be music from The Ferris Blarney Band.

Weather alert The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management is asking people to prepare for possible severe weather this weekend.

Areas in eastern Marlborough, including Waikawa, Picton, Blenheim, Seddon and Ward townships could experience heavy rain and strong winds.

There were no official warnings as at yesterday, but precautionary measures were being put in place, with council monitoring the situation closely.

Roading contractors are checking urban storm water drains and organising flooding signage if required.

Rivers, Drainage and Engineering Services staff are also ensuring response systems are in place.

Residents are advised to continue to listen to local radio stations for weather forecasts and updates and to also take note of any warnings issued.

Power and travel may be affected so those concerned may need to review travel plans.

Interislander are not reviewing the sailing times as yet, but advise people to keep checking on

Close shave for Renwick teacher

By Kristy Martin Renwick School teacher Nicola Moynihan will lose her locks next week in front of the entire student body and staff.

But the plucky teacher swears she’s not nervous. After all, it’s for a good cause.

Nic, as she’s known, is participating in Shave for a Cure and has already raised $600 for leukaemia and blood cancer research.

“For me, it was never about the reason I would do it,” the Year 3-4 teacher explains.

“It was that I couldn’t find a good enough reason not to do it.

“I’m more nervous about the weather because we’ve had some cold days lately.

“But people have given me hats and knitted me beanies.”

Nic will go under the razor next Tuesday at 12.15pm, at the school grounds on High Street.

Melissa Hedley from Cabello Hair and Beauty, a friend of Nic’s, will be the one brandishing the shaver.

“She told me she’ll probably cry,” Nic said.

People have had mixed reactions to the news after Nic decided a month ago she was going to take the plunge.

Still missing Search and rescue teams have still found no trace of missing Erie Bay boatie William Kerry Blair, aka Kerry.

A plane with three search and rescue spotters onboard searched the coastline from Nelson to Westport on Tuesday for the missing 55-yearold and his launch, Erie.

Police are checking marinas and regular broadcasts are going out to all vessels on the marine radio asking for sightings of the boat, missing since Saturday.

Police are asking for anyone with information about the movements of the 9 metre Senator aluminium launch, which is white and it has a blue stripe along the side, to come forward.

PAK’nSAVE turns one

By Adam Poulopoulos Deals every day and a Stickman impersonation competition are just two events happening next week in celebration of PAK’nSAVE’s first birthday.

The Springlands supermarket, which is owned by husband and wife team Mark Elkington and Andrea Boock, officially opened on March 19 last year.

Other events include a barbecue from 11-1 on Wednesday, tastings, spot prizes and giveaways.

Ms Boock said the store had been a success from day one despite four supermarkets already being in operation.

“It is a success story, to open a brand-new supermarket in an environment like that.

“It was always a nerve-racking situation to open into.”

Customers from as far away as Picton, Havelock, Kaikoura and the Rai Valley come in to use the supermarket and petrol station regularly.

Mr Elkington said it meant shopping at the store was “a huge convenience.”

“From day dot it has gone from strength to strength.

“Customers get an easy park, get in the door, buy groceries in spacious aisles, grab a coffee and a petrol voucher and fill up.”

PAK’nSAVE has brought 150 jobs to the region, and candidates were put through a rigorous recruitment process.

Mr Elkington said the process, which

Rates rise New Zealand has become the first country in the OECD to lift the official cash rate.

The OCR rose to 2.75 per cent on Thursday, up from 2.5 per cent.

It is the first time New Zealand has lifted the OCR since 2010, a change that was reversed a year later.

Bluff oyster season has only just begun, but demand is already high.

The season began at the start of the month, and goes through until the end of August.

Guytons manager Chris Thorn said his store had their first order through on Tuesday, March 4.

He said they flew off the shelves on the first day, and locals could not get enough.

“People in Blenheim love them.

There’s a big demand.

“They sell out most days.”

He said the oyster’s good reputation played a big part in their popularity.

“It’s a short season and the taste is amazing.

“There is a well-known perception that it’s a high-quality oyster.”

He said the only downside was sales were depenedent on the weather.

“The demand’s so high some days we can’t go out and we don’t have any.

“How many we sell is how many we get.”

Warming up the winter economy

By Adam Poulopoulos Attracting tourists in spring and autumn to pad out seasonal variance is a priority for tourism officials in the Marlborough region.

Between the years of 2008 and 2013, on average, Marlborough’s international tourist spend steadily dropped between the peak in January and the winter months.

By the time the trough occurred in June, less than a quarter of the January spend was being recorded.

Domestic tourism saw a reduction of about 50 per cent during the same period.

Submission on legal highs Dear Ed, I am totally opposed to the sale, production and wholesaling of any synthetic drugs which are not scientifically proven to be harmless to the potential users.

The fact that people, particularly young but not exclusive to our young people, pay for these drugs indicates they provide a high experience and altered state.

It is clear that many young people have ended up in hospital to be detoxed.

It is also common knowledge that fatalities have occurred in Australia and that one

may have happened on the West Coast.

How many lives have to be destroyed before we learn.

Marijuana is another issue where it may have medicinal value, but the current marijuana is 3 to 4 times more potent than its earlier predecessors.

We must continue to criminalise these steps to more harmful habits brought about by these addictive killers.

The real root is a society and government who just don’t care.

Eeek! The sky’s falling Dear Ed, NZ hasn’t a lot of acorns but it’s got a lot of nutters and Chicken Lickens running around saying the sky is falling.

I refer to the knee-jerk reaction by council after the Christchurch earthquake in cordoning off the Seymour Square clock tower and the Athletic Park grandstand.

But saneness prevailed and the cordons were removed.

But Chicken Lickens are still squawking over climate change.

Of course climate changes have always been here.

About seven million years ago glacier

came down the Wairau to by the Branch River. It receded and the climate warmed.

I don’t remember Chicken Lickens shouting “eeek!” then.

I want the environment cleaned up before a new Kiwi flag.

But what is climate change, natural lot man made or both?

Chicken Lickens recently ran around shrieking with DOC saying a disastrous rat plague is coming so let’s dump 1080 poison everywhere.

Is Chicken Licken behaviour the work of bureaucrats? Falling skies gives them a job.

You have done a splendid job.

But once again the selfish spoilers have been busy.

The Boss causes parking chaos

By Kristy Martin Marlburians love Bruce Springsteen, so much so that the airport carpark was thrown into turmoil when a huge number of locals headed off to Auckland to see ‘The Boss’ live in concert.

Airport chief executive Dean Heiford admitted there were parking problems on the weekend of March 2, when Springsteen (pictured) and the E Street Band performed at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland.

But the parking needed to be upgraded anyway, Mr Heiford said, because of demand following the increased seating capacity for flights between Blenheim and Auckland.

“There were issues when the Bruce Springsteen concert was on.

“Half of Marlborough decided to leave and go to Auckland that weekend.”

However, with the addition of 800

extra seats per week when the 50-seat Bombardier Q300 aircraft replaced the 19-seat Beechcraft 1900D aircraft last month, demand for long term parking had also increased.

“There are 131 public long term car parks,” Mr Heiford said.

“Since the Q300 aircraft have come on we are averaging 80% occupancy, which means we need to look at more parking options.”

The aiport terminal is due to be upgraded, but the increased passenger numbers meant parking plans would have to be considered sooner.

But it could be some time before any upgrade goes ahead.

“We would need to identify suitable land, negotiate to get a lease on it, do designs, get Board approval, tender and construction,” Mr Heiford said.

“We’re not sure how long that would take.”

By Adam Poulopoulos The Blue Door Marlborough are frustrated after they had rubbish dumped on their front doorstep for the sixth time since Christmas.

Five TVs, a computer, mouldy furniture and other items were left for staff to discover on Monday morning.

It cost $140 to move it to the tip.

The latest batch was the largest of the six, three of which have occurred since Blue Door moved from Charles Street to Seymour Street in early February.

Manager Bronwen Demmocks said the latest episode was “disappointing.”

“Any money spent there is not given to the community. Given the state of the stuff they can’t have genuinely thought we would sell it.”

Blue Door has not taken any TVs for sale in the last three years.

Since their move to Seymour Street, there have been three trash dumpings in three weeks.

Ms Demmocks said tip fees and an inability to rope off their new carpark were possible reasons for that spike.

She said acting on the problem was proving difficult.

“Until we can find who was responsible, there’s not a lot we can do.”

Blue Door is planning to install a donated security system in the next week to help catch the culprit.

Colin King, a Zodiac man When it came to photographing Colin King for this article, there was no hesitation when it came to choosing a car. “We owned a Zodiac through the mid-seventies – with four children it was a great family car.”

He continues, “Mind you, I made it even better by dropping a 289 Mustang V8 into it and put in a different radiator system to solve the overheating problem that the model was renowned for.”

Colin explained that back then, there were no regulations when it came to ‘customising’ cars.

You had to have a warrant of fitness, but no further tests were necessary when it came to adding or swapping various parts.

The Kings lived in Kaiapoi after they were married in 1970 until they bought 60 acres at Fernside, Rangiora in 1979.

At this time, Colin had a Morris Oxford.

Another car was a MKIII Cortina which Colin ‘modified’ with a V8 engine and a Falcon automatic gearbox – this was not particularly successful though – Colin recalls, “It was too higher geared!”

Colin wasn’t the only petrol-head in the family.

His father and uncle both raced motorbikes at Cust in North Canterbury during the 1930’s and in mid-60’s, Colin’s father arrived back from a trip to the USA with a 1958 King Swan Dodge!

His brother also had a love of cars some of which included a Triumph and an Anglia before that – both fully customised!

The oil spike of the seventies hit those who loved their cars.

Despite petrol at 50c a gallon it had been 30c not long before so this was a serious price increase.

People that owned gas guzzlers couldn’t afford to run them and many of the car companies had to adapt or face ruin.

Going back to his youth, Colin has fond memories of his Dad’s Jaguar XK140 and squeezing in the back with his sister and older brother on the way to and from milking cows at the family farm in Lincoln.

If all went well on the farm and the kids behaved, they were occasionally taken to The Vogue on Barrington Street to see a movie, or even to see the Lady Wigram Trophy Race at the Wigram Airbase – this was a major highlight!

Reminiscing, Colin said that maybe he should have spent his money on other things,

but cars were important – they were a real passion and as he put it, “Your car meant a hell of a lot to you, you never forgot the cars you owned.

By comparison, today’s cars lack the personality and statement of those earlier models.”

But on the flip side, Colin was quick to

The 1950s are back

Wine exports up 5% The 2014 New Zealand grape harvest is underway amid high hopes for a vintage which has started earlier than recent years due to a fantastic growing season.

“On the back of the 2013 vintage, New Zealand wine exports are up 5% to a record $1.27 billion and we expect they will exceed $1.3 billion

by June year end,” said New Zealand

Winegrowers chief executive Philip Gregan.

“With demand strong in key markets, the 2014 vintage will enable another significant boost to exports in the year ahead.”

The 2014 grape harvest commenced in late February and will conclude in early May.

By Kristy Martin The Friends of Marlborough Museum will hold its annual Pop Up Dinner on Friday March 28, with a fun, 1950s retro theme.

This year, the dinner will be held at Marlborough Women’s Club on High Street.

Museum chief executive Steve Austin said the event would coincide with an upcoming ‘Kiwiana, Kitsch and Kitchenalia’ exhibition opening on April 1.

“People are welcome to dress up and we will have live 1950s music and retro food,” he said.

Every year, the Friends of the Museum hold a fundraising dinner at different “pop up restaurant” locations to raise cash for the exhibitions.

Last year’s event was a Spanish-themed dinner at Ritual Café that proved incredibly popular.

Tickets are very limited, and can be purchased at the museum, located at Brayshaw Park, or Bookworld.

Health Minister Tony Ryall launched the vaccine in Wellington on Tuesday, and several Marlborough practices received the injections last week.

The vaccine targets three different strains.

Lister Court Medical Centre nurse Judy Holcroft said demand had been high, even earlier this week.

“On Monday and Tuesday they went thick and fast. Everyone’s been wondering if we had them yet.”

Muddy Buddy Entries have opened for the Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy later this month.

The event will be held at the breakwater at the end of Rangitane Drive in Havelock on Sunday, March 30.

The course is 0.75 kilometres long, and stretches along the estuary verge.

Individuals and teams are encouraged to enter and dress up for the occasion.

The local fire brigade will be there to hose down the finishers, and St John will provide medical cover.

GODZone Jeremy McKenzie’s Absolute Wilderness team have stormed home to finish third in the 520km GODZone adventure race.

Blenheim-based McKenzie and his team finished at about 7:30 on Wednesday night.

Dan Moore, from Picton, and Nelsonians Dan Busch and Naomi Whitehead were the other team members.

The runaway winners, Seagate, finished the race just before 7am on Wednesday to claim their third title in a row.

There were 41 teams in the event.

Makos Lansdowne Park will host two round-robin matches for the Tasman Makos in the upcoming ITM Cup season.

They play Hawkes Bay in a replay of last year’s thrilling championship final in the first match of the season.

That will kick off at 2:35 on Sunday, August 17.

Shield holders Counties will also be coming to town for the last round-robin game of the season, on Sunday August 12.

Otago will get the first chance to lift the Ranfurly Shiled from Counties when they face off in round two.

Table Tennis Twice-weekly table tennis sessions have started in Picton recently.

Players are invited to the Picton Little Theatre between 10am and noon on Tuesdays, and 7:30pm and 9:30pm on Thursdays.

Each session costs $2.

The gift of the gab Earlier this week Usain Bolt, who runs to the media about as fast as he runs round a track, was at it again.

Bolt declared himself available for the Jamaican national football team, who begin their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign next year.

Reports have stated the coach may even be inclined to pick the fastest man alive, although it is relatively unclear how good he is at controlling a football.

Bolt has professed his love for the beautiful game. A diehard Manchester United supporter, he has met the team and ex-manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the past.

He has also been particularly vocal on Twitter about the club’s transfer policy, and their failings this season.

Sport is full of these characters, those of the inflated egos and muddled words.

Orange wave passes through Blenheim

By Adam Poulopoulos An army of about 300 orangeshirted trekkers walking the length of New Zealand for Multiple Sclerosis stopped in Blenheim this week.

The Great New Zealand Trek group, which includes 105 horse riders, 87 walkers, 38 bike riders and 80 support staff, have covered 200 kilometres each year since they started in Cape Reinga in 2005.

This year’s leg began at the Wairau Valley on March 8, and ends when they reach Clarence on Sunday.

The took a rest day in Blenheim on Wednesday, and spent the night camping on the edge of the Richmond Brook airstrip.

All the funds raised by the group go to the Malaghan Institute, with a charitable trust set up to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

Group member Jan Ferguson said the whole operation needed a lot of effort from everybody.

“The whole village moves every

day.

“The caterers make 900 meals a day with no power and no running water.”

The 2014 leg of the Trek is the first in the South Island, after the group reached Wellington last year.

By Adam Poulopoulos Students from both Blenheim colleges got a serious workout this week as the Cityfitness truck parked up in Blenheim.

The truck stopped at the Girls College on Wednesday, before moving onto the Boys’ College field yesterday.

It contained rowing machines and exercise bikes, and students were subjected to other exercises like burpees and crunches.

MBC PE teacher Gareth Pugh said the demonstration would help students in many ways.

“It’s enjoyable and obviously good for their fitness.

“It installs good habits and technique and hopefully when they go on they’ll join a gym or do more fitness work in the future.”

Cityfitness Blenheim general manager Natalie Gallagher said the truck was a “fun, engaging and educational” way to let students know about health and wellbeing.

The truck began its tour on February 9, and finishes on April 6.

By Adam Poulopoulos An up-and-coming Blenheim darts player is targeting national and international tournaments following his success at the South Island champs at the end of last month.

Clubs of Marlborough’s Michael Thoms won the youth 18-25 division of the tournament, which was held in Oamaru.

He beat Marty Wilson of Hokitika 4-2 in the final.

Thoms’ next assignment is the national champs in Christchurch in July, and if he is successful there, further meets in Australia.

The 23-year-old said he was delighted with his Oamaru victory.

“I went down there hoping to win it, but I knew it would be tough.

“It’s my best result. I’ve done well at other national tournaments but that was against everyone, not just my age group.”

Thoms threw four 180s during the weeklong Oamaru meet.

He has started playing more and more tournaments recently, having taken up the game nine years ago.

“It’d be nice to be as good as those guys on TV like Phil Taylor.

“I guess the more practice I have the better.”

The Oamaru tournament was Thoms’ first South Island Championships.
