World record

By Kristy Martin Aw shucks, she’s done it!

A Blenheim woman has set a new world record for mussel shucking at the 10th annual Havelock Mussel Festival.

Angela Fredericks (pictured left) from Kono Seafood beat the record for shucking 100 mussels in under two minutes at Saturday’s festival, held at the Havelock Domain.

Her time was 1 minute 59 seconds.

“I felt sick the whole time,” Angela said after smashing the previous record of two minutes 11 seconds, set by Kannaha Keo at the 2007 mussel festival.

Funeral held for local icon

Boy, 16, stabbed

The funeral for well-known Blenheim man Fred Jones was held last Thursday at Mayfield Chapel.

Fred passed away on Monday March 10 aged 94, after a long illness.

He was best known in Marlborough as the founder of Jones Berryfruit, but had not worked for the company since an accident in 2007.

Earlier in life Fred spent six years serving in the Merchant Navy during WWII, three years prospecting in Papua New Guinea, and met wife Cecilia during an 18-year stint in Thailand.

He began his berry farming career when he bought his first ten acres of property in the 1970s.

Fred is survived by Cecilia and children Christina, Peter, Angela and John.

A 16-year-old Picton boy remains in hospital after he was repeatedly stabbed on Saturday night.

Police said the teenager was stabbed on Wairau Road outside the skate park about 10:45pm.

He was transported to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim, where he remained yesterday in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.

St John Picton station manager Tony Cronin said the teenager was treated for several stab wounds, mostly to his torso area.

Twenty-eight-year-old Picton man Nathan Russell Bond appeared in the Blenheim Distrct Court on Monday on charges of wounding causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Bond has been granted bail to live at a Nelson address and will face court again on May 19.

Swashbuckling time at Mussel Fest Continued from page 1 Angela, who opens mussels for a living at Kono, won the chance to compete for the Guinness World Record after being the fastest shucker in the individual competition earlier that day.

But when it came down to the world record attempt, she shaved a massive 35 seconds off her previous time.

“I just didn’t want to come last,” she said, and joked that she deserved a pay rise for her efforts.

Despite grey skies and the threat of wind and rain, thousands turned out to enjoy Saturday’s festival.

Katrina Lange from Marlborough 4 Fun said numbers were down on last year’s event due to the weather warnings, but 4500 still went through the gates.

“It went really, really well,” she said.

“Everyone pulled together a really good festival in the circumstances.”

Ms Lange said the cooking marquee with 2012 MasterChef winner Chelsea Winter had been very popular and she’d also received positive feedback about the diverse musical acts.

By Kristy Martin Blenheim man John Maffey has travelled around New Zealand and observed wonderful entranceways leading into townships big and small.

But what have we got here in Blenheim? Waist-high grass, weeds galore and a lack of signage that could make people wonder which town they are even driving into, he says.

And with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visiting next month, it might just be the time to tidy things up.

“About a year ago my wife and I were travelling around the South Island and we just observed how this town presents itself compared to others.

“Places like Seymour Square, Pollard Park and the Wither Hills are great, but it lets itself down in a major way when it comes to the entranceways.

“The entrance from the south, from Cob Cottage Road into town, is the most neglected and overgrown.

“It’s a very poor impression for visitors.”

The Maffeys decided something needed to be done and, when they travelled to the North Island earlier this year, took the opportunity to photograph some of the notable entranceways they passed.

Examples included attractive and unique welcome signs featuring sculptures, brickwork and wellmaintained garden beds.

“It’s about making local residents proud of how we present ourselves and giving people a reason to stop and find out what there is to do in Blenheim.”

The entrances from Nelson and Christchurch do say ‘Welcome to Blenheim’, but only on the speed signs.

Mr Maffey, a former teacher who has lived in Blenheim for 40 years, accepts that signage is not the main issue, as Blenheim does not yet have its own unique brand .

“The signage is more a long-term thing.

“There needs to be a well-thought out landscape plan, good plantings and the appropriate signage that puts a stamp on Blenheim as a place of note.”

Mr Maffey says he has received support from the mayor and council, but there is only a small annual budget for council’s landscape group.

Councillor Jamie Arbuckle told the Sun he wants to see greater funding allocated for entranceway plantings in the 2014-15 Budget.

Mr Maffey says the public also need to have their say if they feel strongly on the issue.

He is urging people to make a submission to council’s Annual Plan when public submissions open on April 4.

Missing man William Kerry Blair’s launch has been found but there is still no sign of the 55-yearold.

The HMNZS Wellington reached the missing launch more than 200kms off the Taranaki Coast in heavy seas on Monday night.

Police Officers onboard the Navy vessel managed to board the Erie despite 10 metre swells.

Kerry, as he is known, was not onboard the Erie and police said there was no obvious indication of what had happened to him.

Authorities are attempting to tow Erie to New Plymouth.

Case dismissed

John Maffey says council needs to make Blenheim's entraceways more appealing, like other towns around New Zealand (below).

Former Interislander ferry captain John Henderson has had his charge of causing unnecessary danger to passengers thrown out.

Mr Henderson had been on trial in the Wellington District Court, and the case was thrown out on Monday.

Captain of the Santa Regina ferry in 2011, Mr Henderson sailed the boat across the Cook Strait twice while it had two holes in its hull.

Judge Thomas Broadmore said most of the evidence submitted showed there was no critical risk to the ship’s safety.

By Kristy Martin Blenheim residents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge next month, a visit which has got many reminiscing about previous royal tours to New Zealand.

Local royalists Jackie Smart and Brenda Carr says they can’t wait to see Prince William and Kate when they arrive in town for a World War 1 wreath-laying ceremony at Seymour Square on April 10.

“It’s wonderful for Marlborough to be able to showcase the region and it has been a while since we’ve had any royals visit,” Jackie said.

“I hope Seymour Square will be crowded,” added Brenda.

“I love the pomp and ceremony of the British.

“Aren’t we lucky they are coming now, just when we needed something?”

Jackie came to New Zealand from England in 1957 but says she has had more opportunity to see the royal family here than in the UK. She has a small collection of royal memorabilia, including teacups from the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002, a tiny coronation coach and a set of earrings with images of King George and Queen Mary.

She has also kept a scrapbook of Charles and Diana’s royal tour in 1983.

Brenda, who grew up in Nelson, says she first started following the royal family in boarding school, where all students were encouraged to take an interest.

She says she is looking forward to seeing the “delightful” Kate in person.

Meanwhile, work to beautify Seymour Square for the royal visit is being undertaken this week.

Robert Hutchinson said the flagpoles at the clocktower were getting painted, as were the chains between the plinth.

Pathways were being washed and seats were being stained.

“We are just getting all the dust and grime off and making everything look pretty,” he said.

The pathways will undergo another cleaning closer to the royal visit.

‘Not feeling the rockstar economy’

By Adam Poulopoulos Kickstarting Blenheim’s economy is crucial in helping to create a thriving community, according to Kaikoura’s Labour Party candidate Janette Walker.

Ms Walker moved to her home in Woodbourne in January, and has been doorknocking and meeting local organisations to better understand local issues.

She said it was important the town’s economy was given a boost.

“Some people aren’t feeling the rockstar economy in Blenheim, that’s for sure.

“It’s like the handbrake has

been pulled up on the region.”

She said National had failed to address issues important to the region, like fisheries and healthcare, leaving the

economy struggling.

Resolving problems like the low-wage economy and economic inequality were at the forefront of her mind, she said.

“Somehow you’ve got to get rid of the low-wage economy.

“The region’s known for it, and regions don’t grow in that situation.

“There’s a big gap here between the rich and the poor, and it’s not just the unemployed. It’s the working poor too.”

To help grow business and increase the population, she said the council and the wider community needed to come

together to create a plan for the region.

Ms Walker, a former farmer, came to the region from Feilding.

She said overall, she was looking forward to the challenge.

“Geographically and physically, it’s an amazing region.

“I’m really pleased to be here...I’ll be doing my damnedest to take the seat back for Labour.”

The election is set to take place on September 20.

Stuart Smith is the National candidate, while Steffen Browning is contesting for the Greens.

Library revamp ‘beneficial’

By Adam Poulopoulos A new library development in the CBD is one way of attracting local people into the town centre, say Market Street shop owners.

Debate has continued over whether to relocate the library to the old Civic Theatre block on Queen Street, or to a new Taylor River precinct.

Bookworld Blenheim’s Charlene Scott said Blenheim’s population was growing, and the CBD needed to develop to accommodate that.

“I think it’s going to be beneficial for the community because its a community resource.

Mrs Scott said until designs and cost analysis on the two sites had been completed, conversation on which site was preferable was “academic.”

She said she was not worried a new library would draw customers away from her store.

“Often if we don’t have the product I’ll send the customer to the library for research.”

Thomas’s co-owner Tim Thomas said it was important the spaces available were used for their best purpose.

He said the precinct site’s proximity to the river and visibility from the highway meant the building

would be better used as a business facility.

He said he was glad headway was being made on the issue.

“As far as we’re concerned we want to see development in the town centre, so it’s nice to see progress.”

Any decisions on the final location of the library will not be made for at least another year.

Truck and car crash at airport

By Adam Poulopoulos A truck driver and the occupants of a four-door sedan had a narrow escape after a crash on Friday.

T h e c r a sh h ap p e n e d a t Woodbourne Airport, when the car turned into oncoming traffic at about 7:45am.

“The sun was quite low and the driver of the car didn’t see the oncoming truck. It clipped the right front of the vehicle.”

A 26-year-old male was taken to Wairau Hospital with minor injuries, and was later discharged.

Police inbrief Backpack stolen Overnight on March 15, a sleepout at an Arthur Street property was broken into and backpack and its contents were stolen.Also that night, two boats in Picton had fishing gear taken from them. Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the offenders.

Windscreen smashed At about 1am on March 16, a vehicle parked on Brewer Street had its windscreen smashed.

The truck driver and the other three occupants of the car were treated at the scene.

In addition to the air force fire unit, a fire crew from Renwick, a police vehicle and the ambulance attended the scene.

It took authorities about 40 minutes to get traffic moving again.

By Kristy Martin An elderly pedestrian who was hospitalised after being struck by a cyclist is now seeking to find the culprit.

Ernie Berry suffered injuries to his head, shoulder and elbow after being knocked down by a pushbike outside his home on Muller Road on February 25.

The 89-year-old says he has no memory of the incident and awoke in Wairau Hospital.

“I woke in hospital on that date to hear ‘You’ve been in an accident’.

“I don’t remember the accident, but it seems I was walking out my driveway onto the footpath when a young male cyclist knocked me down onto the footpath.”

Mr Berry says he was in hospital for a week and was diagnosed with a subdural haematoma.

He is still feeling the effects.

“I was bleeding out my head and had injuries to my shoulder, elbow, thigh, ears, black eyes and a swollen head.

“I’m still getting headaches, and my memory was shortened by the accident.”

At 2.40am, a 20-year-old unemployed male was arrested on Main Street for possession of a class A drug. He will appear in the Blenheim District Court on April 9.

At 1.10am, a 23-year-old unemployed female was arrested near the intersection of Maxwell Road and Scott Street for disorderly behaviour. She received a pre-charge warning and was released when sober.

At 1.20am, a 17-year-old male student was arrested in Dashwood Street after a police patrol found him trying to hide after he had broken into a vehicle. He was held in custody to appear in court that morning.

Sober up At 2:20am, a 36-year-old unemployed male was taken into custody due to his level of intoxication. He was unable to care for himself and unable to provide an address. He was released when sober.

Student arrested At 10.30pm, a 23-year-old male student was arrested on Main Street for offensive behaviour. He will appear in the Blenheim District Court on April 9.

Double trouble At 5am, a 15-year-old male student was arrested in Monro Street for being found unlawfully in a closed yard and unlawfully interfering with three vehicles. He has been referred to the Blenheim Youth Aid Section.A 20-year-old part-time vineyard worker was also arrested at the same location and has been charged with the same offences as well as being in possession of cannabis.

This has just happened in our area, it is not as though these idiots could not take the cat with them, they just left it behind.

If you dont want your family pet of five years, have it put down not left behind to annoy the wildlife around this area.

This cat would surely be better off in a new home instead of having to scavenge food and sleep in the cold.

I always thought coyotes were a sort of mangy dog in the westerns that cowboys shot!!!!

Anyway the council operate a shingle trap in the area he describes to prevent shingle going further down the river so costly dredging is avoided.

It is cleaned out every year so it works and provides cheap gravel for the council.

If that isn’t saving rates and being pro-active then what is.

Maybe the Dog should find out the facts before bursting into print next time.

A recent letter writer to the Sun (March 12) suggested that this was a ‘futile’ project but perhaps did not appreciate the purpose of the work, said Mr Wheeler.

The riverbed of the Taylor River is constantly on the move, with the current carrying gravel from the river’s upper reaches down the river toward the town.

“Gravel traps are basically catch holes in the river bed, built to trap the debris which comes down the river,” Mr Wheeler said.

“Regular excavation is needed to maintain these traps so the river channel does not fill up.

“If we didn’t do this, it would be necessary to excavate the river channel through town pretty regularly and

that is a much more environmentally disruptive and expensive process.

“This work is important to protect Blenheim from flooding but also to stop regular nuisance flooding of the Taylor River walkway and Riverside Railway Line. If we don’t maintain the river channel, it means the river will breach its banks more often, inundating the berm and footpath and leaving a bigger clean-up to do. It’s a no-brainer really.”

Mr Wheeler says the excavated gravel is used in other community works; currently it’s being used on the Blenheim Riverside railway line extension, and also for some stormwater piping work being done on Riley’s Drain.

“It’s more economical for us to use this gravel in projects around town than cart it in from the Wairau River or Council’s Pukaka Quarry which are our other sources of gravel,” said Mr Wheeler.

one on one with the Sun

Lifting his game Overweight with a poor diet and a serious injury, Beau Michaels has taken himself from trade work to managing a gym and a paintball centre. He talks to Adam Poulopoulos For gym manager Beau Michaels, fitness has not always been a priority, but when he made the decision to embark on his journey, he never looked back.

The Snap Fitness and Against All Oddz Paintball manager was born in Taranaki, and moved to Blenheim when he was eight.

A tradesman for many years, Beau said the “part-and-parcel” cigarette-and-pie breaks began to catch up with him.

Ironically, in the three months directly after giving up cigarettes eight years ago, Beau’s weight ballooned from 70 kilograms to 110kg.

Soon after, he said it was an injury that led him to his current path.

“I was playing tennis with the kids. The ball went over the fence and I went to get it.

“I came down from the fence and fractured both heels.

“It was then I decided to embark on a journey of health and fitness.”

He said he wanted to lead by example for his children Kaya, now 15, and Kamahl, 10.

“I wanted to be the strongest version of myself physically, and fitness training helps you become mentally stronger too.

“I wanted my kids to see what hard work and determination could get them.”

While incapacitated, Beau began to research ways to improve his diet and nutrition.

“I started by reducing portion sizes,” he said.

“I went from having big dinner plates to breakfast bowls, and then I eliminated sugar and carbs after 7pm.”

He lost 15 kilograms in the first two months.

As his feet healed he decided to join the

old MAWLA, a weightlifting gym that was commonly known as ‘the gorilla pit.’

“It was cheap. I started to work out there, trying to build muscle and lean out,” he said.

“The trainer there said I should study to become a personal trainer.”

Beau spent 2013 taking his PT course at the Sports Academy in Blenheim, and before finishing the course Snap Fitness had made him an offer.

At that stage, Beau had already been managing Against All Oddz for four years.

He said he was hooked from the first time he picked up a paintball marker.

“My work at the time organised a game between the painters and the gibstoppers.

“I loved the adrenaline of hunting someone down and shooting them, and the thrill of outsmarting them!

“It was all about the sneaky, stealthy

approach - I felt like I was young, playing cowboys and indians again.”

Beau bought a batch of supplies within two weeks of playing, and ran games in exchange for cheap paint before becoming manager.

For the last few years, Beau has competed in tournaments around the country with his team, Obsidian, and plans to head to the Super 7s International Paintball Series in Australia later this year.

He said competing was largely on the backburner now with two busy jobs.

He hoped to continue the growth he’d seen at both Snap and Against All Oddz, and write a second health and fitness e-book.

“I’m working at the gym from 10:30 to 7:30 tonight, then going home to do accounts for paintball,” he said following our interview.

“There’s no rest for the wicked.”

Phil Brown Motors celebrates 18 year milestone

By Celeste Lodewyk Eighteen years ago Phil Brown and wife Paula first opened the doors to their used car dealership on Blenheim’s Main Street, and looking back Phil says it has been a “very enjoyable time”.

“Eighteen years - really?

Where did that go,” he laughs.

Stocking just 10 cars in the beginning, Phil Brown Motors has continued to grow but one thing remains the same.

Phil’s friendly greeting and obvious enjoyment of what he does best - matching people with their dream car.

“Cars and people... two things I really enjoy,” smiles Phil.

Before opening his own dealership, Phil started out in the

industry working as a junior salesman for Carthy Holden in Christchurch in 1975.

He then went on to become the new car manager at Sockburn Ford, also in Christchurch.

In 1981 Phil and Paula opted for a lifestyle change and relocated to Blenheim where they raised their five children and Phil worked for Lucas Ford.

Phil was then granted his dealership license in 1996 and went on to establish Phil Brown Motors.

“Blenheim is a great place to have a business and as the region has grown, so too has Phil Brown Motors,” he says.

One major change Phil has seen in the past 18 years was the advent of the internet.

The internet brought with it a new ‘nationwide market’ where customers could view and purchase vehicles from home or from out of the region.

“It was a major change but one that I embraced and since then a lot has changed with a lot of business being done through this method.

“I quite often source cars for locals as well as selling cars to people outside of Marlborough,” Phil says.

Beads of Courage The programme provides something tangible that a child can use to tell family and caregivers about their experience during treatment. The beads also help explain to teachers and friends what has happened to them whilst they have been away from school. Parents of younger children enrolled in the programme can use the beads in the future to explain to their child what they have been through.

With each procedure or milestone in their treatment, they get a special bead.

Each bead represents a treatment (for example chemotherapy, injections, scans); an experience (hair loss, isolation, fever) or a milestone (completion of treatment). For each medical procedure or treatment the Photo by Amore Photography child will receive a bead.

Renwick family ‘grateful’ to Child Cancer Foundation

By Celeste Lodewyk Seven-year-old Renwick girl Sophie Gilchrist is nearing the end of her cancer treatment after being diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on July 9, 2012.

Speaking to the Sun on Monday, Sophie’s mother Michelle said the family was elated that she continues to remain in ‘remission’ with a end date for her treatment later this year.

“Sophie is doing really well and we are feeling excited about it,” she said.

Michelle is hugely supportive of the Child Cancer Appeal after receiving support from the beginning and right throughout

Sophie’s cancer journey.

“The Cancer Foundation is incredible, they regularly check in on how Sophie is doing and have always been there when we needed advice.

“They also put us in contact with others who have been through similar journeys which has been great moral support,” she said.

Money raised during the national appeal week goes towards supporting families like the Gilchrists in the form of petrol vouchers for when Sophie had treatment in Nelson, accommodation support when the family had to stay away from home and grocery vouchers.

“Having that assistance takes the worry away when you are in a situation where you are not in your home environment and having to take time off work.

“It’s one of those things you never know until you are affected, the Cancer Foundation’s support has been invaluable,” Michelle said.

Sophie also takes part in the Beads of Courage programme and has received approximately 350 beads, each representing a procedure she underwent during her nearly two-year journey.

Nic has raised $1800 so far for Shave for a Cure.

“I was really nervous!” she said following her big haircut.

“But it’s such an awesome feeling to know I’ve raised so much money and helped so many other people and all I had to do was cut my hair off.

“It feels breezy,” she added, when asked how her new ’do felt.

“It just feels really weird.”

By Celeste Lodewyk People attending the Flaxbourne A&P Show in Ward this Sunday can expect to be entertained, intrigued and perhaps even inspired.

That’s because in addition to the popular show displays, trades and animal events, there will be a number of ‘exciting’ features including art displays, the newly introduced poultry classes, helicopter rides and the highly anticipated motorised couch competition.

This will be the second year this competition is held where couches are combined with small motors, steering wheels, mirrors and even drink holders before being driven around a course.

Last year’s winning motorised couch was that of local brothers Martyn and Nick Bennett with their converted ride-on mower equipped with a coffee table and mounted stagg antlers on the front.

Another event that attracts plenty of attention is the Iron Man Competition where contestants show their strength through pedal power and shearing skills.

Each team consists of four members where one pedals a bicycle to power a shearing machine while another shears a sheep. Their ball of wool is then rolled to the shearing shed while the remaining two members cut through a log with cross cut saw.

Features that will excite the young and old are the helicopter ride lucky draws with Southern Helicopters, horse and dog events,

show rides and stalls and so much more.

The Flaxbourne A&P Show promises a great day out for the whole family so pack the kids and a picnic blanket into the car and head along to Weld Park.

The first horse event begins at 8:30am and entry costs $5 for adults, $3 for secondary students and free for primary and preschool aged children.

One hundred and sixty children registered for the event, which was held at the Waikawa Bay Foreshore on Saturday morning.

There were about 300 people overall.

He returned to Waikawa Bay, where he did his first dive course nearly 40 years ago.

Brian FM beats blast into town Those looking for a new radio station in the car need not worry - Brian FM has arrived on the airwaves.

The station, broadcasting from “a crappy little building in the middle of beautiful downtown Blenheim,” launched on 93.7fm at 8am yesterday.

The station has the slogan “playing what we feel like, all day every day.”

Brian FM’s programming has no commercials, DJs or song requests, and was founded by a group of three.

The station co-founder, aka Andrew,

said the station was more of a hobby than a business.

“It’s a labour of love, fun and passion, not of fame and fortune.

“We love music and we thought ‘hang on - here comes an opportunity to focus entirely on the music.”

He compared the station to shaking an iPod, with about 2000 songs on file.

The station has been broadcasting lowpowered test transmissions on a different frequency since February last year.

Whale and seal sanctuary The Government says it will create a new marine reserve, whale and fur seal sanctuary, five customary fishing areas and amateur fishing regulations to improve the management of Kaikoura’s coast and ocean.

Whale Watch Kaikoura chief operating officer Kauahi Ngapora welcomed the announcement, saying the decision demonstrated a commitment to protecting an environment that had reinvigorated the Kaikoura community.

“We are passionate about protecting and nurturing what is an essential

cultural, spiritual and economic taonga for the people of Kaikoura and New Zealand,” Mr Ngapora said.

“The Government, through this announcement, has shown it is committed to protecting this national treasure also.”

Mr Ngapora said the introduction of the new conservation measures was a victory for many in the local community who had worked together under Te Korowai o Te Tai o Marokura to develop strategies to protect the coastline and marine life of the Kaikoura coast.

By Adam Poulopoulos Fresh from completing the 520km GODZone course with his team Absolute Wilderness, Jeremy McKenzie wasted no time in getting back to work.

McKenzie, a winemaker at Villa Maria, said he returned from Kaikoura on Thursday night, and was back at work the following day.

“I’m immersed back in vintage. There’s no rest for the wicked!

“When you’ve been racing like that it’s quite good to stay on the horse, keep the mind ticking over.”

Absolute Wilderness, comprised of McKenzie, Picton’s Dan Moore and Nelson’s Dan Busch and Naomi Whitehead, finished the course third, coming in on Wednesday night.

The team left their GPS tracker in a transition area and punctured their raft shortly after, but recovered to snatch third.

They had held second for the first half of the race.

McKenzie said emotions ran high when they realised their tracker was missing.

“You can only imagine what we were thinking! We jumped out of the raft and ran three kilometres back up a gravel road to get it.

The team is looking for a new coach and more players before their season begins in the middle of April.

The team is the only Marlborough side competing in the Nelson women’s rugby competition.

Central was placed in the competition

midway through last season and only got the chance to play four games.

They have been lacking a coach for the last two years.

In that time, captain and first-five Courtney Stewart has been running the team.

She said she was looking for someone to take the pressure off.

“We want someone who knows the game and isn’t going to muck around.
