Wasp invasion

By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough has been abuzz with activity, but not of the welcome sort.

Wasp populations have exploded in some areas of the region, resulting in property owners needing to take urgent action.

Local pest control companies have been fielding numerous phone calls from residents after discovering ‘larger than usual’ wasp nests in trees and around homes and sheds.

JAE Marlborough owner Ashley Gladman said there had definitely been an increase in wasp activity around Blenheim and they had been busier than usual over the past three weeks.

Hanging up the cleaver

By Adam Poulopoulos Ivan Neame is all set to cleave his last bit of meat on Tuesday, as the New World Blenheim butcher heads into retirement.

Colleagues celebrated Mr Neame’s efforts at morning tea yesterday, ahead of his final day on Tuesday.

Mr Neame was a foundation member of the supermarket, which was opened at the current location of Farmers, in 1977.

He said he had enjoyed his time.

“Most of the way it’s been a happy time here.

“We have a team and a half of staff - that makes the compelling difference.”

When he started meat was delivered in carcass form, but has changed in recent years to cartons.

He said some things always remained the same.

“It is important to get the supply to the customer right every day.

Mayors call for legal high ban

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman is joining forces with other mayors, petitioning central government to toughen up on legal highs and outlaw the products.

Mr Sowman says the government legislation did not meet the public wishes, allowing only for the control of these substances, not a ban.

The government is currently in a consultation process for its Regulations to the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013 which sets out the regulatory powers to control the psychoactive substance market.

Mr Sowman said he and other South Island mayors had signed a petition calling on the government to change the law to ban these products.

Meanwhile local councils, including the MDC, are in the process of setting up their own regimes to control the sale of legal highs in their own areas.

Mr Sowman says councils have no option but to set their own local policy as the law doesn’t allow them to enforce an outright ban.

Cash making environmental splash

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim student is off to Wellington as he pursues his dream of tackling environmental issues.

Jonathan Cash has won a place at the annual Sir Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeaders Forum, beginning at the end of next month.

The 17-year-old Marlborough Boys College pupil is one of 50 year 11-13 students from around the country selected for the event, which will continue for five days.

may also have the opportunity to head to the subantarctic Auckland Islands, scheduled for February next year.

There, students will be involved with constructing Blake Station, a new climate research base.

Jonathan, who is the current chairman of the MBC Environmental Council, said he thought the forum would help to expand his knowledge of environmental issues.

“I am always getting involved with environmental projects, especially with Department of Conservation, and I enjoy working in the outdoors.

When I was accepted I was both thrilled and proud - thrilled for myself and proud to represent Marlborough.”

Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO Shelley Campbell said the late yachtsman would be proud of the students’ interest in the environment.

“He was passionate about inspiring young people to take up leadership opportunities and challenge themselves to set and achieve audacious goals, which is a big part of the annual Youth EnviroLeaders Forum event.”

About 200 students from around New Zealand applied for the forum.

“We have seen some huge nests, two in particular were really big.

“One was about twice the size of a basketball and the second looked like a big blown up beach ball hanging in a tree, it was an impressive sight,” he said.

mon wasp and because of their aggression I would advise people to be cautious and call in the experts.

“Wasps won’t stop at one sting and if they feel threatened it’s like a signal goes out and several will appear and sting, it can very nasty,” he said.

Wasps are not the only species that have increased, cockroaches have also sparked an increase in pest control callouts, according to Ashley.

“The milder winter we experienced last year has provided the breeding conditions needed by wasps and cockroaches to increase at a higher than normal rate.”

Correction The Havelock Muddy Buddy, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed, not cancelled, as Wednesday’s story indicated.

The new date is Sunday, May 11.

Flying day gives royals a taste of local aviation

By Kristy Martin Aeroplanes are being repainted, security tightened and staff are polishing up their curtsies.

Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre director Jane Orphan says preparations are well underway for next month’s visit by their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince William and wife Kate will spend one hour at the museum from 1:15pm on Thursday April 10.

“It’s great that they are coming here. Everybody’s very excited,” Jane said.

“We’ve got to provide security, put up barriers, organise special ID tags for staff and sort out a general programme of how it’s all going to work.”

The royal couple will divide their time between touring the museum in the company of film director Peter Jackson, whose collection of World War 1 aircraft and memorabilia is on display, before examining other aircraft outside,

Delta Group is creating a WW1 ‘living history’ display.

The $10 entry fee for the flying day has been waived in order to encourage more members of the public to head along.

“It’s just such an important occasion that we decided we won’t charge,” Jane said.

Omaka staff and volunteers have been conducting working bees, tidying up the grounds and repainting some of the vintage planes in the lead-up to the highprofile event.

The event was going to clash with the Forrest GrapeRide on the same weekend.

Recycling feedback Council is considering extending its kerbside recycling to Renwick, Tua Marina, Rarangi and Grovetown.

A survey for affected residents, which includes 950 properties in Renwick and 750 properties in the other four towns, will be posted out next week and people will have until May 21 to return the forms.

These areas are currently serviced by private companies that collect bags and wheelie bins each week.

The introduction of a recycling service for Renwick would divert up to 260 tonnes from landfill and 202 tonnes for the other towns combined.

Fun day The Lochmara Lodge Family Fun Day will be held this Sunday, featuring music, face-painting, kids’ treasure hunts and games, a tug-of-of-war championship and the famous Lochmara Big Swim, 750m across the bay.

Business Dairy farm changes game inbrief

Real estate winners Two Blenheim-based real estate agents won big at the First National Real Estate Group’s annual Upper South Island awards ceremony last week.

Andrea Church was crowned number one salesperson, while Michael Rea won the next generation award.

The First National Mark Stevenson office also won the top office award in its category.

Wine shines It appears the Marlborough wine industry is in good health, after it took out 10 of 14 trophies at the weekend’s Easter Show Wine Awards.

Villa Maria’s George Geris won winemaker of the year, and their Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Chardonnay 2012 was named champion wine of the show.

Marlborough won awards across eight varieties, including Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Willowbank Estate family dairy farm, which turns 150 this year, has changed the way customers receive their milk by installing a vending machine.

Willowbank Estate, on Hunter Road, unveiled the machine in January 2013.

Since then customers have been able to go into the milk shed and purchase bottles to fill and refill as they please.

It is the only dairy farm in Marlborough with a vending machine.

Customers are allowed to take five litres of milk per person per day for their personal use.

Farmer Tim Jopson said an increased demand for his nonpasteurised milk led to the machine being installed.

“We’d have two or three people come in every week.

“There’s more and more people making their own cheese and things like that now.”

Big win A Marlborough organisation won the supreme award at the Trustpower National Community Awards.

Mistletoe Bay Trust, representing the Marlborough District, won the award for their eco-village and campground.

The awards were held on Saturday night.

Speaker Australian Nick Peall is heading to Blenheim to speak at a one-day workshop on internet marketing.

The seminar is on Thursday, April 17.

All equipment was moved in during the weekend, and she began taking customers at 9am on Tuesday.

The hairdresser moved from its old site on Arthur Street.

Ms Bowler said the new site had been worth the wait.

“The process of getting here has taken a long time, because the building had to be split into three.

“The amount of people looking in and the amount of foot traffic has been amazing.

“We’re really happy with it.”

The old Chequers building has been retenanted, with 2 Style being joined by takeaway outlet Master Roast.

And if you had to name at least three people who lived in your street, could you?

Years ago these questions would have been answered with a resounding ‘yes’, but in today’s society many people are more private and not as forthcoming when it comes to getting to know your neighbours, according to neighbourhood support street coordinator Belinda Bryce.

Belinda has teamed up with Blenheim community constable Russ Smith, anti bullying co-ordinator Liz Collyns and emergency services officer for Marlborough emergency management Gary Spence to highlight the importance of knowing your neighbours and encourage people to form ‘neighbourbood support groups’.

The group is also promoting ‘Neighbours Day Aoteroa’ with a simple message.

“Good neighbours take care of each other, so turn your street into a neighbourhood”.

Neighbours Day Aoteroa will be recognised this weekend, March 29 and 30, and encourages people to carry out small acts of neighbourliness, whether it be popping your head over the fence to introduce yourself through to organising a street barbecue.

“If you are trying to make friends with neighbours use this day as an excuse,” Gary says.

“From an emergency services point of view, well organised support groups cope better in crisis than neighbours who don’t know one another.”

Russ adds; “Alert neighbours who take notice of what is happening in their street are one of the best deterrents for burglars and other crimes, so introduce yourself to your neighbours and look at forming a support group.”

The latest project has seen David James Tree Services employees Parker Havens, left, and Zeth Kingi tending to all the trees in the square.

They began work on Tuesday, and the job should be done by Monday.

Kingi said the pictured tree was proving troublesome, having encountered rats and pigeons during the job.

“This one’s a bit of a mess. So far the rest have been pretty cruisy though.”

By Belinda Jackson Noeline Stewart, wife of Omaka Classic Cars founder Ron Stewart, loves to be behind the wheel of a classic car almost as much as he does.

From Jaguar rallies to the Coromandel’s Leadfoot Festival, it has always been a case of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’.

Noeline’s first car was a 1979 blue Mark I Escort which she enjoyed driving.

“It was the perfect size – big enough without being too big and small enough to nip round town and park easily.”

Some of Noeline’s favourite cars to drive have included an Alpha Romeo, a Mini, a VW Beetle, the XJR 1998 Jaguar Supercharger

and the 1974 Rolls Royce Series II Silver Shadow.

She remembers driving it down from the Kapiti Coast and onto the ferry at Wellington.

She said she could see all the ferry guys thinking, ‘Look out, lads – this will be interesting!’ but she parked it perfectly!

A few years ago Noeline and a girlfriend drove a Holden SV Saloon 5000 on a rally from Invercargill to Auckland.

She says she loved the noise and the gruntiness of the car.

As Shell was a sponsor they stopped at a number of Shell stations on the way for people to admire the cars.

They even met Stirling Moss at the one in

Once in Auckland, they met both Jeremy Clarkson and James May from the BBC’s Top Gear.

Another car trip, this time in a Ford Fairlane V8 ‘tickford-enhanced’ (one of only 104 ever made) was a girls’ weekend away heading over to Buller on the West Coast.

A great time was had by all but on the way back the amount of talking lead to a missed turn and they ended up in Reefton!

Noeline is now looking forward to the Shanghai to London Rally Tour starting at the beginning of May. She and Ron will be taking 1967 Peugeot 404 that mechanic Owen Packham has given

a thorough once-over to make sure it’s ready for the 62 day trip.

He’s even installed a small fan on the dashboard to make up for the lack of airconditioning!

A number of times over the years Noeline has gone into Owen’s workshop and noticed a car she hadn’t seen before.

When asking if Ron had bought yet another one, the boys would all look very sheepish and mutter something along the lines of, “Oh… er… no…Ron’s had this one a while…” Noeline likens this to a woman putting on a new dress only to hear the husband say, “I haven’t seen that before is it new?” “Oh no – had this for ages!!” would come the reply!

Picton businessman Ian Gardiner has been in the automotive industry for most of his life, and it’s been a fulfilling career that has taken him halfway around the world.

Ian owns Motordrome Services Ltd, located on Wellington Street in Picton, where he and longtime employee Jason Gardiner provide Warrant of Fitness checks and related repairs, vehicle servicing, tyres and car and boat storage.

Motordrome Services Ltd is also a member of the Kumho Tyres team and Valvoline Oil. He and wife Vicky have lived in Picton for almost 30 years, of which Ian has been self-employed for 27 years.

Prior to Picton Ian grew up in Rakaia, Southland, where he first began working part time in an automotive workshop in his teenage years.

Wanting to continue along that path, Ian began an apprenticeship in 1971.

Using his skills he moved to Australia, where he worked in some mines in the Northern Territory, before travelling to

the Philippines as a workshop advisor for an aid project.

“It was there I met my wife,” he grins.

Later, after returning to New Zealand, Ian and Vicky opted for a ‘fresh start’ and packed up their belongings and headed for Picton.

The couple purchased the Picton Transport Services Workshop, allowing Ian to became self-employed with the clear vision that he wanted to “concentrate on servicing the locals”.

“I thought it was the right thing to do in the early days and after all this time it’s paid off. We have had great local support and business has been pretty consistent,” he says.

The business was shifted to its current site at 55 Wellington Street after Ian purchased the site’s building 13 years ago where Ian expanded to incorporate a small boat and car storage facility.

Just a game

This week we have seen incidents in the sporting world reminding us there is more to think about than just the game.

Twenty-two year old Newcastle Knights forward Alex McKinnon’s career is probably over after his neck was broken in a tackle last weekend. It is unclear what further damage was done.

Before that, forked lightning struck, but didn’t initially stop play at the World T20 between England and New Zealand.

Lastly, West Coast Fever netball coach Norma Plummer received death threats ahead of her team’s game in Dunedin this weekend.

Umpires waited for an over before leaving the field in Bangladesh. Captains Stuart Broad and Brendon McCullum have since questioned the umpires’ decision. Broad even got fined for his criticism.

And as for Plummer, no death threat is a laughing matter.

Many public figures have experienced them before.

One of the most famous examples of a sportsperson whose actions in the sporting realm led to their death was Andres Escobar.

The Columbian defender scored an own goal at the 1994 football World Cup, and was then shot and killed, probably by drug lords in his own country, after he inadvertently caused them gambling losses.

That isn’t likely to eventuate here, but it makes you think.

Sportspeople are just regular people after all, and their safety should be the first priority.

The 15th edition of the Allan Scott Women’s Golf Tournament is fast approaching.

By Adam Poulopoulos The development of Crossfit Blenheim into a strong community is the thing Mark and Kim Gear (pictured) look back on with the most fondness as the gym prepares to turn one.

The husband and wife team officially opened the gym, on April 1 last year.

Numbers have swelled from 20 when the

gym began to about 100 now.

Mark and Kim are both fitness junkies, and ran boot camps before starting Crossfit Blenheim.

They recently secured a contract to help train the Marlborough members of the Tasman Makos, and are in partnership with equipment supplier Industrial Athletic.

Squash talent from around the top of the South Island descends on Blenheim this weekend for the Marlborough Squash Open.

The event began last night at Stadium 2000, and runs until Sunday.

One hundred and twelve entries from as far afield as Nelson, the West Coast and Christchurch gather to compete in the men's and women's draws.

The women's final is due to be held at 2:30pm on Sunday, with the men's final directly after.

World number 46 Megan Craig heads the field, playing in both the men's and women's draws.

The Blenheim-raised 21-year-old has just returned after qualifying for the Women's World Open Championships in Penang.

Marlborough Squash Club president Janet Udy said she was happy with the level of entries.

She said it was important local players had the chance to play in tournamnets like this.

"It's really great for local players to have the chance to play against players from outside the region.

"Usually they have to travel away."
