Making a splash 10th annual GrapeRide a success

By Kristy Martin The grapes were flying and the virgins smiling during the annual Forrest GrapeRide grape crush on Saturday.

A number of white t-shirted ‘grape crush virgins’ splashed into the large wine vat to crush three tonnes of grapes, in what has become a popular and entertaining GrapeRide tradition.

Over 2500 riders took part in the 10th annual GrapeRide, the largest cycling event in the South Island, last Friday and Saturday.

“The event went very well, we couldn’t be happier,” said spokesman Duncan Mackenzie.

GrapeRide a bunch of fun Cyclists came from all over New Zealand, and internationally, to participate in the 101km event, which begins and ends in Renwick and also takes in Picton and Havelock.

Less than five per cent were Marlburians.

To mark the GrapeRide’s 10th anniversary, a number of ‘hardcore’ competitors chose to complete 10 laps of the circuit - a whopping 1010km.

“They survived it, and I get the feeling some of them will be quite sore this week,”

laughed Mr Mackenzie.

He said the 10-lap ‘mammoth’ race was a one-off, but the five-lap ‘ultimate’ was set to continue.

The GrapeRide, which starts and finishes at Forrest Wines in Renwick, also featured entertainment and food stalls.

Mr Mackenzie said planning was already underway to make next year’s event bigger and better.

“We’re looking forward to doing some new and interesting things,” he said.

The ‘potential for carnage’ was so high during the GrapeRide that St John staff had to call on reinforcements from Havelock and Nelson, according to Tony Cronin, station manager for Picton.

Thirteen crew and six vehicles were needed to service the event, which had 2500 cyclists and brought scores of visitors to the region.

Ten competitors were taken to hospital during the 10th annual GrapeRide, held on Saturday, and another 44 were treated either on the circuit or at the first aid tent at Forrest Wines.

“There were a variety of injuries,” Mr Cronin said.

“We had head injuries, fractured wrists and clavicles (collarbones) and medical events.

“The potential for carnage is very high when you’ve got 2500 riders and we’ve just got to be prepared.

“But it is a very very well run event these days.”

Mr Cronin said St John was always seeking new volunteers, who would be fully trained.

“Right now we could do with another 20-25 staff.”

Traffic delays come to an end Work on the The Bells Road/St Leonards Road intersection on Middle Renwick Road has been completed.

But the protocols, perhaps unsurprisingly for William and Kate, had not been too strict.

“I think that’s just them.

“It’s the relaxing of the royals and I think that’s great. Treat them as normal people - that’s why I’m not nervous.”

College students to meet royals

By Kristy Martin Olivia Burns and Alice Schofield have more in common with the Duchess of Cambridge than they might think.

The two Marlborough Girls’ College students chosen to sing the national anthem for the royal couple tomorrow might be surprised to learn that Kate Middleton also attended ‘Marlborough College’, but in Wiltshire, England.

The Duchess studied chemistry, biology and art, and played tennis, hockey and netball at the college with the same name as our local secondary schools.

But while the Duchess shares this similarity with Olivia and Alice, it is Prince William’s hand the Year 12 students will shake during tomorrow’s World War 1 commemoration ceremony at the clock tower in Seymour Square.

Alice and Olivia, both 16, have been invited to meet the prince after singing the New Zealand national anthem in the presence of the royals, the Prime Minister, about 80 media representatives from all over the world and an expected crowd of 10,000 spectators.

But the teenagers are, surprisingly, not nervous.

“It will be really fun,” said Alice, who, along with Olivia, will also follow William and Kate through the square and collect flowers and gifts on their behalf.

“It would be cool to get a photo with them.”

“My mum is very excited. She’s so proud,” added Olivia.

“We’re comfortable with it… but it might be

By Kristy Martin Marlborough Mayoress Thelma Sowman has gone to great lengths to ensure she has the perfect outfit for tomorrow’s royal visit.

But when it comes to conversation, the wife of Mayor Alistair Sowman has no idea what to say to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

“I’ll just wing it,” she laughed.

A ‘simple and elegant’ navy dress with a peplum is what Mrs Sowman will wear during tomorrow morning’s wreath laying ceremony, after which she and her husband will lead the royal couple, William and Kate, around Seymour Square.

Shopping in Wellington, the mayoress visited 30 stores in one day before she found the right dress, a long-sleeved number by designer Jane Daniels.

“It had to be appropriate for the occasion,” she said.

There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting a member of the Royal Family, according to the official website of the British Monarchy, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms.

For men this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy.

Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way.

On meeting male members of the Royal Family, the title used in the first instance is ‘Your Royal Highness’ and subsequently ‘Sir’.

For female members of the Royal Family the first address is conventionally ‘Your Royal Highness’ followed by ‘Ma’am’ in later conversation.

The weather forecast for the royal visit is cloudy in the morning, with potentially a few showers, before ‘sunny spells’ in the afternoon.

MetService spokesman Dan Corbett said Blenheim was set to give the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a better showing than they had in Wellington weather-wise.

“By Thursday this whole weather system should be falling apart and the sun does return,” he said.

The temperature is expected to reach 18C.

Crowd goes berserk for Zirka Circus

By Adam Poulopolous Zirka Circus managing director Jeni Hou said she was delighted with spectator turnout as the troupe stopped in Blenheim over the weekend.

The performers put on five shows in the big top at A&P Park between Friday and Sunday, with each filled up to its 500-person capacity.

Ms Hou said they were looking forward to coming back to Blenheim with a new show in two years’ time.

“We had to turn people away because there wasn’t enough space.

“We’ll definitely ask for more shows when we come back next time!”

Zirka’s two-hour show featured acrobatics, clowns and choreographed routines.

A total of 403 submissions have been lodged with the Marlborough District Council by people wanting to have their views heard on the sale of synthetic highs within the Blenheim CBD. Mayor Alistair Sowman said it was a strong indication there was a high level of interest in the community about the contentious issue.

Councillors will meet on Friday May 2 to hear from the 29 submitters who have asked to speak in person on the matter.

Monday May 5 has also been set aside to hear submissions if required.

Worker injured A forestry worker who suffered head and shoulder injuries while working in the Wairau Valley on Monday was airlifted by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

At 2.45pm the chopper responded to the logging accident in the Leatham valley, near Lake Argile.

The injured man, a 31-year-old from Blenheim, was assessed and treated at the scene by the helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic, before being flown to Wairau Hospital for furthur treatment.

Grape spills prove costly afternoon.

So far during harvest, there have been 14 spills on Marlborough’s state highways and nine on local roads.

Police from the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit have urged drivers to secure their loads or face fines of up to $2000.

They say spilling grapes onto a roadway is as dangerous as ice and can cause crashes.

Play pens Dear Ed, Play pens are very scarce now, over 50 years ago most young mothers had them.

We started the wee babies and they grew to like them as they had their toys in with them.

Getting on with house work and knowing that the baby is safe was a great help.

When not in use we used them as a clothes dryer.

Wish some clever man could make them now as I’m sure there would be a ready market.

Rates keep climbing Dear Ed, When Council announces they have new projects and upgrades planned for Marlborough they increase our rates to pay for it.

And that’s fine, but what happens when these projects and upgrades are completed, does Council reduce our rates once they had been paid for?

If they no longer require funding for a completed project then surely this should be reflected through our rates.

Each budget labels what Council

needs to pay for, and how much extra we need to pay in our rates to cover it, but we are not seeing any drop in rates to reflect what doesn’t need to be paid for anymore.

It just seems to continue to climb.

I feel it would be a sign of good faith to say to Marlborough rate payers; “Now this particular project has been completed, we are reducing your rates.”

Food for thought

Unnecessary works Dear Ed, Back on March 19, MDC’s Mr Wheeler and “Dog Control” tried to pick a fight with Don Coyote over the hole dug by contractors in the Taylor River near Monro Street.

I suppose there’s some merit in it but at what expense?

The first reasonable big flood and whoosh, it’ll be filled in.

“Dog Control” had rude remarks about Mr Coyote’s surname.

Play the ball not the man.

“Dog Control” seemed to be MDC or contractor connected to.

Interesting.

But you don’t have to look very far to see extravagance by MDC. For example, raking the Wairau River bed must cost thousands.

From Bamyan to Blenheim Personal trainer Ray Boardman has put down roots in Marlborough having previously been deployed to East Timor and Afghanistan.

He spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about his journey.

When former army physical training instructor Ray Boardman is asked why he and wife Karen have settled in Marlborough, the region they have called home since 2011, he points out the window.

“The climate, the great outdoors, the Marlborough Sounds. I’m not much of a big city person,” he said.

Ray has made his fitness business, Morph It/More Fit, a full-time priority since the start of the year, having started it on a one-classper-week basis in August.

The idyllic surroundings he works in now are a far cry from those he experienced in the forces.

His first deployment took him to East Timor in 2002 as part of an army infantry company.

Based in Cova Lima as part of a peacekeeping patrol for about six months, he remembers East Timor’s day zero.

“All the locals were having massive celebrations but we got tasked to protect a little village on that day.”

After returning to New Zealand, he married in 2006 and was deployed to Afghanistan two years later.

Ray was charged with a new position, looking after the gym and the troops’ fitness levels at the Kiwi base in Bamyan Province.

“Previously it was a room with equipment, but no real structure.

“My infantry background got drawn on for a couple of patrols, but I was basically left to my own devices,” he said.

However, he said his arrival was met with initial trepidation.

“When I turned up the soldiers were saying ‘why is there a PTI here? Do we need to do our required fitness levels?’

“Morale may actually have gone down a bit when I first arrived!”

Ray also organised recreational evenings, like poker and quiz nights.

“When you’ve been out on patrol for three weeks the last thing you want is to have a big smash session,” he said.

During his four and a half months there, he said the situation began to deteriorate.

“You could see the escalation of the Taliban targets. The NGO’s like Red Cross and Oxfam began to get hit, then the police

force, and then as I was leaving we began to get targeted.”

He said while he was never directly involved in a violent encounter, it was never far from his mind.

“Every man and his dog looked shifty they’ve seen a lot of conflict.

“They didn’t have the welcoming smiles of the East Timorese.”

After returning to his New Zealand posting at Linton Ray was redeployed to Woodbourne, and in 2011 he became chief instructor at the Defence Physical Education and Recreational Training School responsible for training all Physical Training Instructors in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Police.

“I was in the right place at the right time,” he said.

After leaving Woodbourne he decided to pursue something different.

“It’s been in the back of my mind for years,” he said.

“Two of Karen’s friends finally convinced me to take a class, and it just grew from there.”

He said the classes provided “militarystyle conditioning, without the regimented discipline.”

Now, there are 34 permanent members, either at the Blenheim fitness studio on Middle Renwick Road, or in Seddon.

“I love it. It’s really good, seeing the results that our members are getting,” he said.

Ray was born in Westport, grew up in Hokitika and attended college in Gisborne.

He met Karen while at university in Dunedin.

Cleaning schedule tips The topic of cleaning is generally one that evokes a deep sigh and eye roll from people, particularly those busy working or with young or teenage children.

So, I hit the streets of Blenheim asking people how they managed their ‘cleaning schedule’, and overwhelmingly nearly 60 percent said they had a monthly cycle with a different task set for each day.

Craft fair a success Locals came out into the overcast weather for the Marlborough Girls College Craft Fair on Sunday.

The College was fundraising to redevelop their kitchen, which will allow students to take NCEA Level 4 hospitality units.

Principal Karen Stewart said that option was currently not available to Marlborough students.

She said feedback from the fair had

been generally positive.

“People who attended the event enjoyed it I think.

“They said we should make it an annual event and felt there were a good amount of stalls.”

Organisation for the fair began in term four last year.

About 40 stalls were set up for the event.

Progress on roading issues Story by Celeste Lodewyk The Renwick Resident’s Association is pleased with the results of a second meeting held last month addressing roading issues with Anglesea and Boyce Streets.

The Association voiced its concerns in February during a public meeting which was attended by Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler and Marlborough Roads principal assets manager Steve Murrin.

The issues discussed were the volume of heavy vehicles using Boyce and Anglesea Streets, the safety risk to pedestrians and cyclists and the lack of cycleways in Renwick.

Mark and Steve both returned, as promised, to Association’s March meeting with a progress report.

Mark said Renwick residents concerns were taken back to council and action is now being taken.

“We confirmed that our budgets include installation of a footpath, kerb and channel and a pedestrian refuge along Boyce Street from Terrace to Anglesea Street and the works are planned for the new financial year.

by Celeste Lodewyk Renwick woman Kat McGruddy has been working hard at her “labour of love” for five years , building up the Renwick Oscars programme within the community.

Kat was originally attending the programme as a young child after her mother Colleen first opened the Renwick Preschool, and now she is proud to carry on the family business.

“This Oscars programme has never been about finanical gain, it’s always been about the children and community and I absolutely love what I do,” she says.

The Renwick Oscar programme operates a before school, after school and holiday programme providing a wide range of educational activities, including Te Reo, sign language, science, art, crafts, baking and active play.

It’s a popular programme with the children who attend and for Kat, it’s like one big extended family.

“When you see children who used to attend our programme setting off for college you get a tear in your eye,” she laughs.

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim musician hopes his song will give him a boost and catapult him into the national consciousness.

Marlborough Boys College old boy Mitch Alderlieste has put his song, 'For the Hills," into the running for a ten thousand dollar recording and video grant from New Zealand on Air. Mitch placed his song on theaudience.co.nz's wildcard chart, which allows people to vote for their favourite song and artist each month.

The winner at the end of April will receive the grant.

As of yesterday, Mitch, who works full-time at Ken Ham's Music Works, was running fourth in the table.

He said the money would allow him to continue following his dream.

"At the moment I'm really pushing for first and as it gets to the end I'll get

‘Invasive’ trees poisoned a bit nervous.

"It'd be huge to win. It'd be another step towards a music career."

Mitch is a multi-talented musician, playing the guitar, drums, bass and synth on his record, and adding vocals too.

The song encourages people not to drink and drive.

"It started with a riff, and then I saw these lyr-

ics and it just worked," Mitch said.

He said he was appreciative of the support he was receiving.

"You can really see the support online. With Blenheim being such a small town it would be nice to beat those Aucklanders."

People walking or cycling along the Taylor River in the next few weeks might experience some disruption near the Monro Street entrance as ‘invasive’ willows are removed to improve river flow.

The willows were planted to help stabilise the banks but some have spread and become too big and are choking the waterway, according to council.

Council staff have poisoned selected trees, which will be removed

with heavy machinery.

Further plantings of non-invasive willows will also be carried out to protect areas of bank erosion.

As well as improving river flow, this will make way for more Tui-to-Town plantings to attract native birds into Blenheim.

Schools and community groups are helping plant areas along the river as part of the Taylor River Project, which was launched last year.

Local woman and former chief financial officer of the The Mud House Wine Group, Louise Miller (pictured), has received a promotion following the sale of the Mud House and Waipara Hills wine brands.

Ms Miller was named chief executive of NZ Wineries, a division of The MHW Group who formerly owned Mud House and Waipara Hills, and started in her new role on March 31.

Mud House and Waipara Hills were sold to international distribution company Accolade on April 1.

Ms Miller’s new role manages 20 full time staff at the local winery, along with up to another 120 staff, hired to assist with vintage.

“We’re busy with vintage, but we’ve got a great team in the business,” Louise said.

“Following harvest, we’ll

spend the next few months producing wine for clients and getting it ready to bottle later in the year.”

Golf tournament tees off

By Adam Poulopoulos Female golfers from as far afield as Auckland and Otago have come to Blenheim for the Allan Scott Family Wines Women’s Golf Tournament.

One hundred and seventy competitors signed up for the 15th annual event, which started on Monday and finishes today.

Allan Scott Tournament Committee chairperson Jane Anderson-Bay said she hoped there would be 15 more in the future.

“A lot of ladies enjoy the tournament and the friendship. It’s a wonderful atmosphere.

“A lot of them come back several times over.

“They feel it is a well-organised and well-run tournament.”

Each day a separate competition is held, with prizes being given across the three days.

Last night a longest-drive competition between sponsors of the event and Allan Scott was held to mark the 15 years.

New saloon champion

Defending champions Central and Awatere both notched up wins in the latest round of the Wadsco Marlborough premier club rugby competition.

Waitohi and Harlequins drew 15 all.

The results mean Central has gone to the top of the table after three rounds.

Saturday’s games are as follows: Awatere v Central, Seddon Domain Renwick v Harlequins, Renwick Waitohi v Moutere, Waitohi Domain All games kick off at 3pm.

A healthy crowd turned out at Eastern States for the latest round of speedway on Saturday.

They saw Phil Smythe crowned the new Marlborough saloon champion. Paul Cambie was second and Chris Cornelious third.

The Marlborough Harriers pack/ training run leaves from their Oliver Park clubrooms tomorrow at 6pm.

All participants are asked to bring reflector gear.

The Novice Cup at the Taylor Dam cross-country course will be held at 2pm on Saturday.

Please report by 1:45pm.

Volunteers are needed for setup, and please bring a plate for afternoon tea.

Marlborough’s young volleyball players are preparing for finals day in the Subway Junior Spikers & Premiers Volleyball Competition on Friday.

The year 5/6 St Mary’s Setters, who earned the most points of any time in round-robin play, face the Witherlea Young Guns in the year 5/6 div one final.
