CALL US ON: 5777 868

By Kristy Martin Blenheim was thrust onto the world stage yesterday with the arrival of William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. More than 7000 people turned out to catch a glimpse of their Royal Highnesses, who placed a wreath at the Seymour Square clocktower and met with local war veterans. The square was packed, with some eager fans arriving as early as 4.30am, and the weather held out long enough for the royal couple to move about and chat with the excited crowds. Continued page 2

Huge turnout to see Duke and Duchess Continued from page 1 Spectators waved union jack flags, little girls wore tiaras and scores of people gave gifts of flower bouquets to the popular royals. Television crews filmed live breakfast programmes and a large contingent of national and international media jostled for prime position on a temporary stage set up beside the clocktower. The service was held to mark the centenary of the First World War and so the royal couple could pay their respects to New Zealand’s fallen soldiers.

After their public walkabout, the Duke and Duchess snuck off for a private lunch at Wither Hills Winery before visiting Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. Film director Peter Jackson showed the royals through the museum, which showcases his own collection of WWI aircraft and memorabilia. Prince William, a pilot himself, was said to be fascinated by the collection, and also climbed into some of the aircraft during a subsequent tour of the Omaka airfield.

Anthem singing an ‘honour’ By Kristy Martin Marlborough Girls’ College student Olivia Burns says being involved in yesterday’s royal visit was a huge honour. Olivia, 16, and best friend Alice Schofield, also 16, were selected to sing the New Zealand national anthem in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prime Minister John Key and other dignitaries, about 80 national and international media, plus thousands of spectators. Olivia also got to meet Prince William, who asked her if she would continue singing when she left school. “‘Not even heavy metal or rock?’ he said, which “It was overwhelming – she was was really nice,” Olivia said. getting flowers left, right and centre.” She didn’t get a chance to talk to Kate, but followed her through the square and collected flowers and gifts Olivia says she and Alice were both ‘so nervous’, but that the ceremony went on the Duchess’ behalf.

Kate gets the ‘Sun’ The Duchess of Cambridge gratefully accepted a copy of the Blenheim Sun newspaper during her walk through Seymour Square yesterday. When handed the edition with the announcement of the royal visit on its front page, Kate exclaimed “Oh look it’s got George on it, how sweet!” Her Royal Highness proved incredibly popular yesterday, with many people describing her as “kind”, “elegant” and “down to earth”. Little Mackenzie Large, 5, said she got to meet the Duchess and presented her with a bouquet of flowers. “She asked me why I gave those to her and I said ‘Because I really, really wanted to’,” Mackenzie said.

Below the Duchess receives a copy of last month’s Sun announcing the Royal visit. Mayoress Thelma Sowman enjoys the moment. Right: Catherine studies the Sun’s front page photo of her family.

Royals enjoy local seafood and wine By Kristy Martin Prime Minister John Key and wife Bronagh were among the guests at yesterday’s wreath-laying ceremony in Seymour Square. After the service, the Prime Minister described Blenheim as a ‘beautiful part of New Zealand’ and said he planned to serve the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a traditional kiwi meal when they joined him for a private dinner on Monday night.

This included ‘quite a lot of seafood’, with some sourced from the Marlborough Sounds, accompanied by local Cloudy Bay wine. Opposition leader David Cunliffe was also in attendance at yesterday’s service, as was the chief of the New Zealand Defence Force, Lieutenant General Tim Keating. Right: Prime Minister John Key and wife Bronagh.

Businesses moving to new Kinross St building By Adam Poulopoulos The construction of a new office building on Kinross Street is gathering pace, and the new inhabitants are preparing to move in. Te Runanga o Ngati Rarua own the building, opposite Top Town Cinemas, and they will be moving in with Aon Insurance. The Runanga are planning to open the building early on Monday, April 28, and both companies will take half the available office space. Construction on the building began late last year. The Runanga chairman Andrew Luke said the trust would enjoy the extra space. "We're bursting at the seams as it is, and we've got a huge amount of records dealing with tribal history. "If this place ever got flooded or burned we'd lose some very important documents." He said the shift would help achieve their goal of a viable economy and culture by the 200-year anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi in 2040. "We'll move more into the centre of town, and we'll be seen more as a part of the CBD. "A lot of Iwi around here are virtually invisible, and this is part of renewing our

The front of the new office building.

identity." Aon assistant manager Dean Bickerton said his team of five were also excited to move. "We'll have better exposure and naming on the new building, and be closer to the town centre. That's the main thing." Mr Bickerton said the change was also motivated by Aon's nationwide push into

better facilities. "The old building is not up to the Aon look any more. "The new push now is to have new facilities around the country." Mr Bickerton said Aon has tentatively planned to start in the building during the first full week of May.

41 QUEEN STREET A decision on the future of an empty Blenheim site will not be made for a while yet. The building, at 41 Queen Street, needs to undertake seismic resistance tests before further steps are taken. Lawyer Peter Radich said the position was still the same, and that engineering staff had been busy lately. The site used to house the Red Hot Fashions clothing store until it moved in 2011.

Alex Fulton in her new store.

Professional advice for everyday kiwi’s.

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim designer hopes her new store helps her customers fulfill their desire to turn their houses into homes. Alex Fulton’s (pictured) new shop, the AFD Store, opened on Wednesday, April 2 at the Vines Village on Rapaura Road. The store is an extension of Ms Fulton’s business, Alex Fulton Design. It contains home design items, including furniture and lighting, which Ms Fulton said have to be “a little different.” She said her store would help to add a homely touch. “A lot of people live in houses, but now more people are aware of

turning them into homes.” She said the early response from the public had been strong. “People have come in and said ‘it’s nice to see a design store with lots of bright products. “It’s nice to be able to have that tactile connection with the products.” She has also started on the store’s design resource centre, which will contain samples. “Even though it’s a store, if a person wants to get a certain piece in I can get it,” she said. Ms Fulton moved down to Blenheim almost two years ago. Two of her Blenheim projects were named as finalists in the 2014 Dulux Colour Awards.

Footloose’s new owners perfect fit When previous Footloose Shoes owner Jos Smith was looking to step aside, the next candidate was a shoe-in, but she prefers to say the opportunity was laid at her feet. Paula Just (pictured) and partner Willie Vosloo had their first day in charge of the Market Street store on Thursday, March 27. Paula had worked in the store alongside previous owner Jos Smith for about 18 months, and said it was the perfect opportunity to take over.

“It was laid at my feet, which is kind of ironic! “It’s been such a dream of mine to have a boutique shop of my own. “It’ll be nice to carry it on with the passion that Jos had.” Paula studied fashion at Stotts Correspondence College Jos has stepped aside, searching for a more relaxing lifestyle, after bringing Footloose to Blenheim six years ago. She is helping Paula manage the transition.

I live in a small quiet renwick street.. until this morning at 5am I was woken with a start. What the heck is that loud droning noise. With the odd bang and crash and yelled swear word coming out of the dark. Coloured lights flashing everywhere, I go out to investigate and find a huge big house being suspended in the air being moved onto it’s resting place. Surely don’t the residents of the street deserve being notified before hand that they would be rudely awoken at that hour of the morning.

HEARTFELT APOLOGIES On wed 2nd april I was driving along fulton rd and ran over and killed a tabby cat with a white belly. To th owners of th cat, I could not stop due to the vechile I was driving and I am very sorry for your loss.

SLOW DOWN! Findlater construction workers in their big trucks are always flying around corners in Blenheim, without a second thought of slowing down. If they keep it up its only a matter of time before they hit and kill someone.

FOOTBALL > SOFTBALL Hang on. In one breath, Karl Turvey says don’t move softball to Lansdowne. The next, he says they would love to go there. Which one is it Karl? By the way, why does a small participation sport need virtually the who of A&P all summer? Make it football all year round! Biggest participation sport in Marlborough by a mile!

RUBBISH BIN PLEASE Harling park is a great location for young and old and a great place to take our dog. I would like to suggest a rubbish bin is needed!!!

I see the comments in the sun about drivers up here. OMG this would have to be the worst drivers in New Zealand. I’ve been to many places and actually thought Dunedin was the pits. I don’t know how some people here survive. Even looking at the cars so many have dings in them. I’ve seen some plain ignorant driving in my week here.

ATTITUDE To the young girl working behind the counter @ Mcd’s morning of 4-4-14 between 10:30 - 10:45. When I said to you, “you get paid to give good customer service”, I meant it! I have mentioned you to a few people, and guess what? They had the same problem - your sour attitude. I hope your supervisor took my formal complaint seriously! Ashleigh. :-)

Congratulations Dear Ed, Congratulations to Tony Cronin of Picton on being promoted with the order of St John. Such an award is not lightly given but richly deserved. He is firstly so professional whenever he is called out and then calm and reassuring that patients feel less stressed. The other award called “Kiwibank 2014 Local Hero of the Year” for the Nelson area shows how widely his service is recognised. Well done Tony G Smart

Dob in loose loads, police urge By Kristy Martin Police are seeking witnesses to a large grape spill at a Blenheim roundabout on the weekend that cost ratepayers $1800 to clean up. The spillage occurred on the corner of Nelson Street and Grove Road about 1.45pm on Sunday afternoon. Sergeant Michael Moloney of the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit urged anyone who saw the truck that spilled the load to contact police. There have been 23 grape spillages in Marlborough so far this harvest and police are cracking down on what they say is a

dangerous and costly practice. “It is of concern that there have been quite a number of grape spills in the area and police are seeking the support of the public to advise police (ring 111) when they observe trucks spilling grapes,” Sgt Moloney said. “If they can, obtain a truck or trailer registration number and advise police ASAP.” Three harvest drivers have been fined $600 for having insecure loads, while several others have been caught using mobile phones, failing to wear seatbelts or for incorrectly completed logbooks.

Authorised officer for the Police Commercial Vehicles Investigation Unit, Eddie Te Boekhorst, says all harvest vehicles must have secured loads and not be leaking grape juice.

Dear Ed, I note with interest the Dominion report last week. Anardarko to pay 5 billion in settlement of damages for 10 years of systemic polution in both on shore and off shore operations. Instead of damaging Anadarko, the share price increased, due to the markets favorable response to a figure much less than expected. Our Energy Minister suggests that he can guarantee the security of deep sea drilling as he has robust best practise principles in place. What is not well known but also reported several months ago is the $250 million paid for an oil rig by our Government. Does the 42 cents in the dollar sound reasonable for our oil. Will the income go to better roads, schools and health care. Perhaps lower taxes. Or will it be spent on more overseas consultants to help us manage our responsibilities. This up to now secret, Trans Atlantic Trade agreement, apparently has written in that Corporations can now sue Governments. If true it is more food for thought. Patriot

Car clubs stuck together Two car clubs, in Blenheim for different reasons, arrived at Omaka at the same time on Wednesday, by complete coincidence. The Ferrari Owners Club from the North Island and the MG Car Club Wellington both decided to take in the aviation museum on Wednesday afternoon. Try as they might, they could not be rid of each other, starting when they took the same ferry crossing to Picton on Tuesday. Ferrari club chairman Phil

Horrocks said his group were on their way to Wanaka for the club’s AGM on the weekend. Their journey down the country began in Auckland, and the number of cars will swell to about 100 by the time they reach Wanaka. Mr Horrocks said heading down the country was an experience. “It’s just a big road trip. “All we get from everybody is the thumbs up and people taking photos.” The eight-strong MG fleet is heading to Dunedin for

the MG National Rally this weekend, before they take in Wings Over Wanaka on their way back. Vice-president Michael Anderson said his group was trying their best to take in ther best of the South Island. “It’s great. One thing we wanted to do was make sure we came here to Omaka.” After Blenheim the two clubs’ paths diverged. Ferrari were in Greymouth last night, while MG were in Timaru.

Humorous approach to parenting Story by Celeste Lodewyk Last year’s visit from ‘parenting guru’ Ian Grant was such a success that he has been brought back to Blenheim for a series of seminars beginning tomorrow. Ian has been a high profile international speaker and has spent decades doing youth work. It has always been his vision to equip and encourage New Zealand parents in an inspiring, entertaining and often humerous way. His first seminar tomorrow is titled ‘Putting romance back into your relationship - men are good at it’, and next Wednesday he will host another titled ‘Parenting Skills - How to grow great kids and enjoy it’. These seminars have been made possible by a group of local people part of the organisation Safe Marlborough - Safe Families.

The damaged Stena Alegra.

Ferries damaged Replacement Interislander ferry Stena Alegra has been damaged while berthing in Wellington Harbour, with sailings suspended until Sunday. The boat was coming into Wellington from Picton at about 1pm on Tuesday afternoon when it sustained a gouge, of about six metres, to its hull. All passengers and cargo were removed from the boat safely. It is unclear how much damage has been done, or when the boat will be back on the water. All subsequent sailings of the Stena until Sunday have been cancelled. On Wednesday morning a full investigation into the incident began. In January the Stena Alegra was withdrawn from sailing for one day after a technical fault. In other news, the boat the Stena replaced, the Aratere, has suffered setbacks during its drydock repairs in Singapore.

Bars stung Four Blenheim premises sold to an underage volunteer during a sting last week. Two 16-year-old volunteers were used in a controlled purchase operation on Thursday, April 3, with four unnamed premises failing the test. Ma rlb oroug h Area Commander Simon Area Commander Feltham. Simon Feltham said the punishments for the four bars would be decided over the next fortnight. “We have to fix the penalty, either by agreement with them or by a hearing with the Licencing Authority. “It’s a fairly standard process.” He said the names of the bars would not be officially released until the formalities were completed.

Parenting ‘guru’, Ian Grant.

Chairperson Denis Humphreys said the idea to bring Ian to Blenheim came two years ago when he met with the mayor to discuss the vision of making Marlborough a safer place. The mayor joined forces with the group to plan for ways to help keep young people safe and from there a number of initiatives have been set up, the latest being Ian’s seminars. The Assembly of God Church, where Denis is also the pastor, is facilitating the visit and local fundraising has been done to help pay for Ian’s visit and to make the seminars free to attend. Denis says donations going towards the seminar’s costs will be appreciated and free childcare will be provided. For more information on times, venue or to make a booking for remaining seats phone Anne on 03 579 1975.

Toyota vehicle recall Millions of Toyota cars worldwide have been recalled by the company, but the effect on cars in Blenheim has yet to be determined. The Hilux, Rav4, Yaris and other imported models have been recalled as a precaution, rather than because of faults causing serious injury. The worldwide number is believed to be about 6.7 million. Blenheim Toyota chief execu-

tive Craig McDermid said they were unsure about the local impact yet. “A lot of it is about checking and prevention, and a lot of the parts will be replaced at no cost to the driver. “We have knowledge of the models affected but the numbers affected in Blenheim are yet to be confirmed.” A variety of separate faults were to blame for the recall.

Shakespeare at MGC By Adam Poulopoulos Budding thespians will get their chance to shine at the Marlborough Regional Shakespeare Festival on Monday. The event will be held at Marlborough Girls College, beginning at 7pm, with gates open at 6:30pm. Both Marlborough Boys and Marlborough Girls groups are performing Shakespearean excerpts, and for the first time in the festival’s 22-year history, Kaikoura High School is also competing. The winners in the fiveminute and 15-minute categories will go on to perform at Nationals in Wellington on

Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand regional coordinator Shalom Del’Monte Aberhart said the show was “a huge deal” for the region. “We’ve got quite a few young kids taking part this year and when they do and keep coming back they’ve got a good chance of being selected for the National Shakespeare Company in year 12 and 13. Marlborough has provided 10 students in the last 12 years for the Young Shakespeare Company, an international group that gets to perform to a paying audience in the Globe Theatre.

‘C’ is for ‘competition’ By Belinda Jackson The stunning C-type Jaguar (known as the XK120-C) that sits against the back wall at Omaka Classic Cars was built from scratch by enthusiast Rae Fairweather. Rae wanted to build a Peter Bruin kit-set vehicle, one of only six or seven ever produced, so he took delivery of the chassis and fibreglass body shell in 2004. Although Rae had a MKVII as a ‘donor car’, he made the majority of the other parts that were required, including the suspension. The engine is a 3.4-litre twin-cam, straight-6. Rae loved the challenge of building such a car and says it drives beautifully, to the point of being quite boring! He says you don’t even get buffeted by the wind! With its lightweight tubular frame and aerodynamic aluminium body, the C-Type (‘C’ is for ‘competition’) became famous for winning the Le Mans 24 Hour Race at its first attempt in 1951. It won again in 1953 but this time the body was made of an even thinner, lighter aluminium and the original twin H8 sandcast SU carburettors were replaced by three DCO3 40mm Webers which helped boost power to 220 bhp (164 kW). They also saved further weight by using a rubber bag fuel tank, lighter electrical equipment and thinner gauge steel for some of the chassis tubes and another significant change to the car was a switch to disc brakes. Duncan Hamilton and Tony Rolt won the race at 105.85 mph (170.35 km) – the first time Le Mans had been won at an average of over 100 miles per hour (161 km). Rae has also restored veteran cars – those produced earlier than 1918. The first one he did was a 1911 twin cylinder Renault which he got on the road in 1972, only selling it about five years ago. He then completed a 1913 Buick. This had been mostly restored during the mid-eighties but is now being tidied up with Rae even making new wheels. Rae’s career with cars started with an ap-

prenticeship at the Ford dealer in Blenheim. However his apprenticeship was ‘transferred’ to Trevor Humphries panel beaters next door when he didn’t agree that mowing the boss’s lawns was part of the job! Cool store construction materials was Rae’s next job, with Glenroy Products, but his love of cars took his engineering skills to another panel beater, this time Noel Healey’s. However the family business beckoned so

Rae worked for Fairweather’s Engineering for 22 or so years, on the site of Fairweather’s pub on Scott Street. In fact the walls are covered in photos from the company’s heyday, making for an interesting piece of local history. Rae has just finished restoring a MK1 GT Cortina with Owen Packham and next on the list is an MGB Roadster. He loves the challenge of replicating the

original vehicles, whether he is building or restoring them – his goal to ensure each piece is authentic. Visitors to Omaka Classic Cars can often be heard enthusing over the cars in the collection and this is something Rae loves. He explains: “Just to hear people from overseas getting all excited about the cars is great – there’s always plenty to talk about!”

New JP for Marlborough Andrew Johns was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace in Blenheim on Wednesday, making him the 113th active JP in Marlborough. Mr John is a farmer who has widespread linksd in the local community. His appointment comes 200 years after the first New Zealand JP was sworn in at Waitangi in 1814. Mr Johns was sworn in at the Blenheim Court by Judge AA Zohrab, the first in Marlborough in the bicentennial year. Today there are about 7000 JPs in New Zealand, who witness signatures, certify copies and transcripts of documents and administer the making of statutory declarations and affidavits.

Picton Little Theatre Auditions Picton Little Theatre are reminding local actors the auditions for their new play are just around the corner. They will be held on 1pm to 5pm on both days. ‘Crystal Clear’ is a three-act comedy, written by Falkland L. Carey and Philip King. This year’s season starts on July 22, 50 years to the day after the Drama Club put the same play on as their first presentation.

GARDENING

FARMING

THIS WEEK

Easy cottage garden If you’ve been hankering for a cottage garden feel in your backyard then hanker no more. You can purchase separate bundles of pretty flower seedlings like stock, antirrhinums, carnations, love in the mist and carnations. Or make it easy on yourself by grabbing a couple of Cottage Garden Mix bundles which, depending on the season, include a selection of the above seedlings and others such as Canterbury bells, polyanthus and pansy. Once you’ve got your flower seedlings, look for a sunny, well-drained area in your garden. To ensure your flowers really take off, I recommend digging in a bit of compost to the soil before you plant. Then, when you’ve got the conditions just right, simply plant each seedling around 20cm apart. The trick is to space them

Farmer speaks about depression By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough farmer has spoken out about depression in the hope it raises awareness of the condition in the rural community. Seddon-based sheep, beef and crop farmer Doug Avery (pictured) has recounted his story for the National Depression Initiative, run by former All Black Sir John Kirwan, on depression.org.nz. Mr Avery said on the website his farm was affected by prolonged drought, which affected his energy and ability to cope. “I’d come in at night feeling buggered, but I’d look at my day and feel like I hadn’t achieved anything.” He said he was encouraged to speak up after listening to Jamie MacKay’s radio farming show two months ago. “I was coming down the hill from the farm listening to the radio. “They said the statistic that there are 18 farmer suicides for each 4WD fatality.” Avery spoke on MacKay’s show soon

after about the issue. “The email systems just got flooded with people expressing their gratitude that someone had talked about it. “For many years we’ve believed not saying anything will fix things, but when I accepted I should speak everything started going right for me.” Soon after Sir John came calling. “He came to the farm and filmed me. “I thought a lot of the guy, but now I think a lot more. “He’s considered the most trusted New Zealander and I understand why.” Mr Avery sets off on a roadshow soon, beginning in Northland on May 19. Later in the year he is off to Queensland to speak to drought-affected farmers there. “I feel for every person committing suicide there’s another 100 just below them struggling with problems. “What we’re trying to do is to make people realise they aren’t on their own, and that there’s a way through,” he said.

far enough away from each other to ensure they have room to grow but not too far apart to create a ‘gappy’ look. And remember to mix all the seedlings in together. Planting each variety of seedlings in groups or lines won’t create the messy, flowery look we’re after! If you don’t have the room for a cottage garden but are still after the look and feel,

you can plant these types of flowers together in pots. The bigger the pot the better – something like half a wine barrel is perfect. Plant the seedlings as you would in the garden but instead of compost just use a good quality potting mix. In around eight weeks your plants should begin to flower and put your hankering for a cottage garden at ease.

Debate has been raging in Britain lately, not just about New Zealanders being asked to cover up, but over the sports tabloids too. English newspapers The Daily Mirror and the Sun (less famous) have been banned by Bayern Munich from attending the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal with Manchester United because of their “disrespectful” headlines. The headlines referred to Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who scored but was then sent off for getting two yellow cards. One-liners “You Schwein!” and “You Dirty Schwein!” lined the back pages the next morning, a controversial play on the German word for pig. The thinly-disguised racist jibe

was not the first time the British media have crossed a line when reporting on German sport. Ahead of a European Championships football semifinal between the two teams in 1996, The Mirror’s front page said “Achtung! Surrender” next to pictures of English players wearing WWII helmets. It has happened in other parts of the world too. An ESPN employee was fired for his offensive slur against former New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, of “Linsanity” fame. Lin, of Taiwanese descent, committed nine turnovers in a game his team lost against New Orleans, leading to the headline “chink in the armor.” The employee denied he had

made the slur intentionally. In 2008 an American broadcaster was suspended from The Golf Channel for joking that Tiger Woods would be “lynched in a back alley.” Should we be imposing harsher penalties for incidents like this? Everyone says sport and politics, and sport and racism, should not mix, but it seems sport is not exempt from wider societal problems. Just look at the 1981 Springbok tour, the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the chants aimed at coloured players by football crowds around Europe. It’s time to crack down, not just by forming a campaign educating people, but by penalising those exacerbating the problem.

sports talk With ... Adam Poulopoulos

Keeping it in the family By Adam Poulopoulos Harlequins Rugby Club have recruited a pair of cousins in their quest for a club rugby triumph this season. First-five Brandyn Laursen and midfielder Conor Hirini, both 21, were recruited by Harlequins before the season began, as they try and push their ITM Cup claims. Laursen was the top points-scorer in the Wellington club competition last season, playing for Hutt Old Boys Marist, while Hirini was playing for Kiama in the New South Wales club competition. The pair grew up together in the lower North Island, and their fathers played together for Horowhenua. Laursen had trialled and played in the Wellington Lions training squad last year. However, he was down the Wellington pecking order behind the likes of Lima Sopoaga. He said he was sold immediately after a series of phone calls and meetings with Harlequins and Makos officials earlier this year. “I missed out last year, and I wanted to push my chances of playing ITM Cup. That’s the goal. “Kieran (Tasman coach Kieran Keane) said he couldn’t dish out a contract without me playing, so it’s up to me to make it happen.” Hirini said his cousin texted him soon after. “He asked what I was up to, and I said I might

Hammett to step down

Bugler off to nationals in own backyard

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett (pictured) has announced he will not seek reappointment at the end of his contract, ending months of speculation about his future. Hammett will step down at the end of the 2014 Super 15 season. He informed the club before the season began he would not seek reappointment, but said his focus remained on pushing his side up the table. “I’m really proud of the contribution I have made to this team and the players over the past three seasons, and I will continue to remain dedicated and focused on achieving what we’ve set out to do this year.” Hurricanes’ chief executive James Te Puni said he was happy with Hammett’s work

By Adam Poulopoulos Fresh off a podium finish in his latest competition, a Marlborough Boys College pupil is busy preparing for his next assignment. Daniel Bugler, 16, is one of seven local drivers competing at the Cresswell Electrical 2014 KartSport New Zealand National Sprint Championships, to be held in Blenheim over Easter weekend. Bugler finished third in the rotax lights class of the Marlborough Kart Club Twilight Series this summer. Bugler previously went to nationals in 2011, but was hoping to improve this time. “We were in a class with a lowhorsepower engine, which wasn’t any good,” he said. “I finished at the back of the field. You make too many mistakes and it costs you.”

since he became coach in 2011. “Mark has worked incredibly hard to create a strong and positive culture here at the Hurricanes. “We are looking forward to the remainder of the season and will be in full support of Mark and the team as they focus on their performance.” The Hurricanes sit eighth in the table, and have a bye this weekend.

He said fitness was an underrated factor in karting. “You try not to sit around on the couch too much. “Thirty laps around the track isn’t easy. If you just sit on the couch and eat junk food you’re going to run out of energy straight away.” At the end of the year, Bugler has been offered a job driving race cars in Taupo, with the possibility of racing in Australia. For now, though, his focus is squarely on nationals, and his home track. The National Championships will see more than 160 karters from nine classes descend on Blenheim for Daniel Bugler will be looking to make Easter Weekend. an impact at the Cresswell Electrical Heats begin on Thursday morning, Kart Raceway. and the competition concludes on Sunday.
