Easter weekend police blitz Marlborough Police will be taking part in the trans-Tasman Operation Unite this weekend and the national Easter road policing operation, Crossroads.

The operations aim to reduce the number of victims from alcohol related crime and road trauma.

As part of Operation Unite, a joint initiative with Australian Police, New Zealand police

officers are encouraging people to re-think how they host gatherings at home, how much they are drinking and their behaviour during and after drinking.

“Police are dealing with the consequences of people who have consumed too much alcohol on a daily basis, whether that is drink-driving, antisocial behaviour or victimisation of

people who are unable to look after themselves,” said Tasman District Commander, Superintendent Richard Chambers.

Police will be visiting bars and patrolling liquor ban areas over the holiday weekend.

At the same time driver behaviour will be closely monitored as part of Operation Crossroads and the 4kmh speed tolerance will be in

force.

Any driver stopped can expect to be breath tested.

“We want to minimise the opportunities for alcohol-related harm and road trauma this weekend,” Superintendent Chambers said.

Operation Unite and Operation Crossroads began at 6pm yesterday and will run until 6am on Monday.

Clowning around

By Kristy Martin The circus came to town and students enjoyed clowning around at Whitney Street School on Wednesday.

About 120 kids took joy in dressing up as clowns, painting each other’s faces, learning some juggling and magic tricks, practising their tightrope walking and creating balloon animals.

Some of the children even got to throw pies at each other.

Staff member Christee Dalzell said the one-day clown school was a way to reward the well-behaved kids.

“Every term, we have a Big Day Out where we reward the students who have been making good choices and this term we decided to have a Clown School for the day,” she said.

“It’s a really fun way to end the term for the kids who have earned it.”

Spreading the cruise ship cash The figures from the latest cruise ship season show Picton is feeling the positive swell of cruise ship money, but is Blenheim?

That’s the question a Blenheim local has put forward as he believes Blenheim was not offering enough to cruise customers .

A report prepared for Cruise New Zealand stated in the 2012-13 cruise ship season, the average port passenger spending per day

around New Zealand was $130.

The same report said overall, 25 cruise ships, carrying a combined 32,000 passengers and 11,400 crew, docked for 31 days in Picton during the season.

Management consultant Peter Chapman said he was concerned Blenheim did not have a unique selling point to take advantage.

“We take people off the cruise ships and

drive them around the wineries.

“At the end of the day, the Ukraine makes more wine than New Zealand Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston said Blenheim was seen as part of the full experience.

Ms Johnston listed the Omaka Aviation Centre and the Blenheim Riverside Railway among other attractions to Blenheim.

Wild weather causes havoc Marlborough’s wild weather looks set to abate slightly heading into the weekend, with the Easter Bunny able to poke his head up for air.

High winds and heavy rain lashed the region yesterday, peaking yesterday afternoon as the tropical low slipped down the country.

MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett said about 70-80mm of rain were expected in low-lying areas like Blenheim and the Wairau Valley, and even more in exposed places.

Power was cut to parts of the Marlborough Sounds yesterday, and Marlborough Lines Operations Manager Brian Tapp said staff were working hard to repair

the outages.

Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler said there had been reports of trees falling over and debris flying around.

He said holidaymakers should continue to take care on the roads.

“We’ve just put out a general warning asking people to be cautious with driving. They need to be careful with the winds and surface flooding.”

The stretch of road between Picton and Tirohanga experienced surface flooding yesterday.

Ward church to be demolished

By Adam Poulopoulos An iconic old brick church in Ward is set for demolition, but the congregation is hopeful parts of the building will live on.

St Peter Chanel’s Catholic Church, which has stood on the corner of State Highway 1 and Gulch Road since 1924, was badly damaged by the Seddon earthquake last year.

Expressions of interest are being taken to extract value from parts of the structure, including a roof gable lined with rimu timber, windows, doors and the bell.

The window for offers closes on May 29.

Church community member Kevin Loe said they were trying to make the best of a tough situation.

“It is a lovely old building that represents the beginning of our community, but the obvious course of action was demolition.

“The roof in particular could be a building block for another building, and it’s our hope someone sees the value in that.”

The church was actually categorised as a risk after the 2011 Christchurch quakes.

In the meantime the small congregation first met in the little social centre next to the church, but now has use of St Peter’s, the Ward church of the Anglican/Presbyterian Cooperating Parish.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter airlifted a woman to hospital with multi-trauma injuries on Wednesday afternoon following a car and truck crash near the Rai saddle on SH6.

The helicopter landed beside the scene where the sole occupant of the car, a 67-year-old woman, had to be cut from the vehicle using specialist cutting equipment.

She was treated by the helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic before being flown to Nelson Hospital in a stable condition.

CANVASTOWN 150 YEARS Canvastown will celebrate its 150th anniversary with an all-day event tomorrow.

The day starts with a blessing from local Iwi at 6am, and a range of activities, including gold panning, woodchopping and on-stage entertainment will begin at 10am.

The period costume ball starts at 7pm in the Town Hall.

Entry is by gold coin, except for the ball, which is ticket-only.

Business Trust Marlborough will be locallygoverned and staffed, similar to the Nelson Tasman Business Trust.

Market Street unit up for lease

By Adam Poulopoulos The owner of a vacant Market Street property said the space’s versatility means it could become almost anything in the future.

One of the bottom units at 14 Market Street has been up for lease for the last two months.

The other units in the building are currently filled by Blenheim Community Law, John Truman Valuers and Call Care Centre.

The empty 303 square metre unit was bought by Nelson-based Nick Taber, of Padstone Investments, in September last year.

About two thirds of the unit is shop floor space, with an office and commercial kitchen making up the rest.

The building has been home to various businesses over the years, including a furniture store, cafes and restaurants.

Mr Taber said the options for the building were limitless.

“It’s so versatile because it has a commercial kitchen and commercial extraction equipment, so it could make a good restaurant.

“On the other hand it could suit someone looking for a showroom, and it would suit retail.”

14 Market Street has been up for lease for the last two months.

Mr Taber added the surrounding area was made up mostly of office spaces, and the unit could make for an affordable office option.

“People perhaps want a central location without the expense.

“What we’re asking is no more that what you’d be

paying for office space on the second floor, and you’d have your own signage and identity.”

Mr Taber said between September and February, he and his wife had been travelling each day to renovate the unit.

partment Store and Big Bucket had held sales in the space, but Mr Taber said interest in the property had been developing.

“There’s a lot of interest in the property on TradeMe. “Some similar businesses have contemplated splitting the space too.”

Cinnamon House opens

By Adam Poulpoulos Thirteen years after founding her design business, Simone Hill has opened her new shop, and she couldn’t be happier.

Mrs Hill opened Cinnamon House, on Park Terrace, at the start of the month.

The store is an extension of Cinnamon House Design, a business she began in 2001.

Despite continuing to unpack and settle in, she said the early public response had been positive.

“People like the idea of being able to build a set all under one roof.

“I’ve had amazing positive feedback. People have been saying ‘It’s just what Blen-

Prior to opening Mrs Hill said she would meet clients

at their homes or over coffee.

While she still does that, she said having a permanent base

helped.

“When I went to a house there was always a risk I’d be missing the one sample I’d need.

“Now I can go round to their place once, then they can come back here and we can really play around with ideas.”

Mrs Hill’s background in hospitality has seen her kit out a lot of hotels and motels, as well as private homes.

She described her style as “eclectic.”

“I like everything. I’ve done everything from tiny grannyflats through to high-end contemporary mansions.”

Cinnamon House is open from Monday to Saturday.

Who’s open this Easter?

Only some local businesses will be open this weekend as they comply with law and save themselves a fine from the Department of Labour.

Under the Shop Trading Hours Repeal Act only certain businesses can be open today and Easter Sunday, two of four nontrading days on the calendar.

Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to $1000.

Both Saturday and Monday are normal trading days.

Conditions for shops on those days are as follows: All supermarkets must be closed except for Picton Fresh Choice, which is allowed to open because they operate in a holiday destination.

All bars, restaurants, cafes and cellar doors are allowed to be open, but customers cannot

be served alcohol without also dining.

Dairies and service stations are permitted to serve only high-need items people can’t put off buying until the next day, like food, drinks and petrol.

Shops can provide a service, such as cutting hair or renting videos, but cannot sell goods.

Pharmacies have no restrictions on opening hours.

Service sucked at the drive thru, all our burgers were cold including the chicken tenders and the chips were not cooked properly.

Dear Ed, A big thank you to the thoughtful person who rid the footpath of a heap of cardboard dumped beside a rubbish bin in Redwoodtown at least a week ago.

Nearby shop owners were not guilty I hasten to add.

Presumably it is not in the bin mans contract to remove such litter and as the wet days progressed the cardboard had soaked up water.

Help! Royal photos wanted!

By Adam Poulopoulos One hundred years after her grandmother met Queen Mary, Sandra Morritt had her own brush with royalty - only problem is she has no evidence it ever happened.

Mrs Morritt is hopeful someone snapped a photo of her chatting with Prince William, on the Anglican Church side of Seymour Square, on Thursday.

She said she came from her

“When I got there only one other person was there - everyone else was on the Watery Mouth side.

“I was talking to the TV3 reporter who said to stay put, because William would come down my side and Kate was going down the other.”

Hours later she had a chance to meet him.

“I put my hand out for him

to shake, and I thought that was all - I didn’t have time to curtsy or anything,” she said.

“He asked me where I was from and how long I’d been here, and then he said ‘It’s much nicer over here so you should stay.”

All up, they spoke for about a minute, and Mrs Morritt said she was struck by how “natural and easy” it all was.

Picton Girl Guides were presented with 30 new lifejackets on Monday night, and 26 of them are bright pink.

Classic Hits and Makana Confections were also part of the promotion with Makana handcrafting 525 Easter truffles for the students.

Zoe’s colouring beat entries from schools all over Marlborough, something her peers were very grateful for.

“Thanks Zoe for the chocolates,” another shouted out from the crowd.

Karam awarded damages David Bain campaigner Joe Karam has been awarded more than $500,000 in damages after he was found to have been defamed.

Karam, 62, was accused of dishonesty in his support of Mr Bain in internet comments posted by Kent Parker and David Purkiss in 2009.

Blenheim’s well known and fondly remembered ‘can man’, Raymond (Henry) Strange passed away on Saturday aged 86.

Henry was known by many when he walked the streets with his wooden cart, recycling cans and bottles.

He was remembered at a private funeral service on Wednesday.

In simple terms, there are two kinds of athletes in the world – those who have the exceptional determination to work hard, and those with remarkable physical gifts.

The best are often a mixture of both.

Last week, the eye was drawn to the world’s youngest snowboarder. Eighteen-month-old Aspen Haight, from Colorado, begun shredding the slopes when she was ten months old.

You can tell a kid like that has a higher level of coordination, and could probably make a career out of an athletic pursuit if she wanted.

Rugby camp Entries are still being taken for the Crafar Crouch Mini Makos Holiday Programme later this month.

The programme takes place at Lansdowne Park from April 28-30.

The skills sessions will be run

by Makos players and coaches.

Football The Marlborough Mariners notched up their first win of the season last weekend with a 5-1 thumping of Wakefield FC 1st XI. Carl Connor-McLean scored four times, with Bjorn Waechter grabbing the fifth.

They play the FC Nelson 1st XI tomorrow at A&P Park, weather permitting.

There are those who are just physically different. Senegalese 18-year-old Tacko Fall, who plays basketball at high school in the States, is 7 foot 5 and 115 kilos.

Perhaps even more remarkably, his seven-year-old brother already stands at 5 foot 9.

“Everywhere I go, people want to take pictures, talk to me, shake my hand, but I am getting used to it now,” Fall said.

So look out – that kid dominating PE class at your kid’s school could be the next big thing in sport.

By Adam Poulopoulos The high-speed action begins today in the 55th running of the Cresswell Electrical National Sprint Karting Championships.

The event, at the Cresswell Electrical Raceway, has attracted over 160 entries, from as far afield as the Gold Coast, over nine classes.

The meet runs until Sunday. Qualifying takes place today, before heats, pre-finals and finals take place over the weekend.

Gates open at 7:30am on each day, with racing getting under way at 9am.

Seven local drivers will be taking part in the event, including Leighton Stanton, William Exton, Gary Cooze, Daniel Bugler, his cousin Sam and the Forbes brothers, Tayler and Cooper.

Kartsport Marlborough promotions officer Neil Butts said the event would be attracting between 500 and 600

Entries to a race taking runners to the top of Marlborough’s highest peak close on Anzac Day. The Mt Stokes challenges, which combines yachting and running, takes place on Saturday, May 3.

Yachts sail from Waikawa to Punga Cove, before runners head to the top of Mt Stokes and down again.

Sportspeople around the region look set to face a weekend of the field in the wake of recent weather.

All sports grounds, barring the College Park hockey turf and Horton Park netball courts are shut today, while they were also closed both Wednesday and yesterday.

The National Sprint Karting championships will go ahead as scheduled, while Eastern States is asking for people to check the Speedway website for a possible cancellation.
