Big birthday bash Iris turns 100 years

By Celeste Lodewyk A milestone birthday and Mother’s Day all in one week... Iris Allan has much to smile about.

Iris is a very special lady and is being treated as such this week after celebrating her 100th birthday yesterday.

The Bethsaida Retirement Home resident was all smiles as she was pampered prior to her birthday party which was attended by friends and family.

“I’m going to enjoy sitting back and watching it all happen,” Iris grinned.

Iris was born in Whangarei Hospital in 1914 and was the only daughter out of four children.

She spent 30 years living in England before returning to New Zealand and later settling in Marlborough to start her family in Kaikoura where they were corriedale sheep farming on the inland road.

No HOB pig hunt this year Story by Celeste Lodewyk It’s been a very difficult decision to make, which hasn’t been made lightly but the organisers of the annual HOB Boar Slaying Super Comp have decided not to hold the popular event this year.

On a positive note however, Matt and Lisa are happy to say they are in talks with a leading company who can see the benefit of partnering with this competition, though like all good things a little time is needed and both parties know the value of not rushing into something if the end goal is to produce a better product.

“We anticipate 2015 will be a much better fit for all parties with ample time pre competition to really give our sponsors some valuable exposure” Matt said.

“We are very lucky to have some awesome young sidekicks along who are already out in the community organising things for next year’s event especially now we have given ourselves plenty of time to look into potential venues, dates and specifics.

It’s the people that make it for us” Lisa said.

What’s the time? Time to get a new clock! inbrief

By Kristy Martin More FM’s digital clock has been switched off after 32 years because the radio station decided it was proving too costly to run.

But the move has got Marlburians in a tizz, with people questioning why the iconic clock at Radio House on the corner of Main and Market streets, has ceased working.

Mark Brown, general manager of MediaWorks said the neon tubes for the clock, which not only tells the time but also the temperature, were costly and difficult to source.

The glass had to be hand-blown in Auckland, he said.

And come daylight saving time, someone had to physically climb up and change the time.

New workplace safety regula-

tions also meant the electricians who have maintained the clock for over 30 years would have to close the road and bring in a scissor lift just to reach it, which added to the cost.

It is understood the clock dates back to 1982, when the building was Grassmere House, and was first switched on by then-prime minister Robert Muldoon. “ T he rea l it y is it’s a very old piece of equipm e n t ,” M r Brown said.

But the radio station didn’t want to disappoint the community.

“More FM is a very communityorientated station and we like to provide that service (the time and temperature) to the community but the clock doesn’t give us any direct return.

“We are now

investigating how we can maintain the clock in a cost effective way.

“Perhaps we’ll start a ‘Save our Clock’ Facebook page,” he laughed.

MAN STABBED IN CHEST A Blenheim man was stabbed in the chest in what police have described as a domestic incident at a Redwoodtown home.

The 62-year-old sustained a ‘deep and serious’ knife wound to his chest at his home last Thursday night, but the injury was not considered life threatening, police said.

Officers were called to the home about 8pm that night and found a 46-year-old woman who lives at the address also present.

The woman has since been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and was due to appear in the Blenheim District Court over the weekend.

More FM's Natasha Knox and Glenn Kirby want to know what will happen to the radio station's digital clock after it was switched off due to the cost of maintenance.

Storm damage bill hits $1m Damage to roads and riverbanks caused during the Easter storms could reach $1m and is expected to take three months to clean up, according to Marlborough District Council.

Marlborough Roads assets manager Steve Murrin says the worst damage to roads was in the Awatere Valley where reinstatement costs are likely to reach $420,000.

It’s expected to take about three months to complete all the immediate work on the roads.

The public is requested to be vigilant while this work is underway, and drivers should be alert to hazards and work crews on the roads around the district.

The major work will be the repairs to the shingle fans on the Awatere Valley Road where the shingle and debris swept across the fans, ripping away surfaces. Those particular repairs are likely to run to about $70,000.

Elsewhere in the Awatere Valley, as well as the many slips to be

cleared, culverts have been washed out and floodwaters have scoured out road seal and damaged drains.

Port Underwood Road requires about $150,000 worth of repairs due to slips and drop-outs. Three retaining walls will have to be rebuilt before the Tumbledown Bay Road can be reinstated.

Queen Charlotte Drive and the Kenepuru escaped without major damage, although there were a couple of minor slips.

To the north of the district,

especially in the D’Urville Island and French Pass areas, many trees were blown across the road.

Mr Murrin says Marlborough Roads will be making an Emergency Works Claim to NZTA for $815,000 to help cover the cost of repairs.

In Blenheim, work is already underway to remove debris and secure the riverbanks along the Taylor River floodway.

A hunter had to be airlifted to hospital with suspected spinal injuries after flipping a quad bike north of Kaikoura on Friday, The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was dispatched about 7.30pm to a personal locator beacon near Clarence River.

The helicopter located two hunters on the side of a steep hill, but was unable to land.

Instead, the onboard intensive care paramedic was winched down and the injured man, a 38-year-old from Christchurch who sustained a serious leg injury and possible spinal injuries, was stablised on the hill.

He was winched into the hovering helicopter and flown to Christchurch Hospital in a stable condition.

BODY FOUND The body of Grant Reginald Andrews has been recovered from a river bank in Marlborough’s Wakamarina Valley.

Police were alerted by a member of the public on Sunday.

A post mortem examination will be conducted.

Murder charge for Blenheim woman Blenheim woman Janelle Amanda Holl, 26, has pleaded guilty to the brutal axe murder of her mother-in-law Robyn Grace in Picton last year.

Holl entered the plea in the High Court in Christchurch six months after her husband, David Adrian Holl, 20, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime, which occurred on January 13, 2013.

Holl will be sentenced on July 18 in the Blenheim High Court.

S outhlanders Judy and Trevor Grey moved to Blenheim early 2012 to be close to family.

Judy says moving to Blenheim and building their first home was beyond their wildest dream for these retirees.

Marlburians are being asked to give generously to the national Westpac Chopper Appeal, which will help raise much-needed funds for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust and Wellington’s Life Flight Trust.

More than 5500 rescue missions were undertaken by rescue helicopters around New Zealand in 2013, including 679 in the Marlborough, Nelson and Wellington regions.

Westpac’s director of corporate affairs, Sue Foley, said New Zealand’s rescue helicopter services are paramount to the many life or death situations thousands of Kiwis face each year, and that each rescue mission can cost thousands of dollars on average as they include a mix of ambulance and search and rescue work.

I went on the grape harvester with Uncle Brett, went to Seddon to get some pine cones, made gingerbread men and went to a farm at Seddon.

I was not bored at all.

I spent my holidays at the skate park and hanging out with mates. The main thing Blenheim needs is an upgrade to the skate park with a bowl, halfpipe, and foam pit.

Went to Curious Bay in the Sounds. There is nothing to do in Blenheim that’s why we go away. We need better shopping and a go kart track.

I went to Ward beach, went to a farm and went swimming at Rarangi. I liked Easter the best.

I spent a lot of time at the Blenheim skate park in the holidays. I would want to see upgrades to the park including a spine, mini ramp, bowl and step-up.

Marlborough Federated Farmers annual general meeting will be held tomorrow at the Giesen Sports and Event Centre in Renwick and will feature one of New Zealand’s most entertaining farming speakers, Pita Alexander, a farm accountant from Christchurch.

Noted for his colourful and often

humorous style of speaking, Mr Alexander’s contribution to helping farmers with wise advice has been recognised in several awards, the latest being in 2010 when he received an Order of New Zealand honour.

Mr Alexander regularly speaks on matters such as the agricultural

commodity cycle, capital gains tax, escalating volatility and New Zealand’s debt quagmire and the future.

Marlborough patients are set to benefit from a $3.5m national boost in funding for colonoscopies, Health Minister Tony Ryall says.

“This boost will help Nelson Marlborough DHB deliver up to 60 extra colonoscopies, for patients most in need,” he said.

“A colonoscopy can identify whether a person has cancer or pre-cancerous growths called

polyps.

“Being diagnosed with cancer can be traumatic, but we know that bowel cancers found and treated early can often be cured.

“Some waiting times for a colonoscopy are still not ideal as DHBs have traditionally been stretched to keep up with demand from a population that is both growing and ageing.

Daubney off duck shooting The Warehouse Blenheim manager Ian Daubney has stepped down after 12 years in the job, and 21 years at the red shed. He talks to Adam Poulopoulos about the store, his plans, and why he can’t see himself retiring just yet.

Ian Daubney is a man in demand.

Since announcing May 3 would be his last day at The Warehouse Blenheim, he has been inundated with phone calls and emails, firstly from old colleagues, then from prospective employers. He says he has just come from a farewell lunch thrown by his staff.

“It got a little sad and emotional, as you would expect.

“There were a few going-away presents.”

For ‘Daubs,’ his resignation is just the latest development in a varied career which has taken him all over New Zealand.

Born in Invercargill, Ian went to Nelson College, where he was a regional badminton, cricket and rugby representative.

The family briefly relocated to Tauranga after his schooling to run a dairy, but Ian returned to Nelson soon after to continue his career.

A variety of sales-orientated jobs followed, before Ian and his wife, “Seddon girl” Kath, moved to Blenheim.

“We decided we should do things for ourselves, so we moved to Blenheim and bought the Tip-Top dairy,” Ian says.

“We probably ended up doing more business than the supermarket next door!”

After moving to Picton to run the Crow Tavern for five years, Ian says a conversation with accountant Joe Wallace led to his involvement in the Warehouse.

“I was looking for a business to invest in, and he asked ‘have you heard The Warehouse is coming to town?’

“He said I should see what effect the Warehouse had on other businesses before I invested, and I decided I’d rather join them.”

Six months after the red shed opened in its original location on Wynen Street Ian was installed as assistant manager, and three years later he accepted an approach

to manage the new Motueka store.

The store was hugely successful. It won eight of 11 Warehouse awards in its second year.

However, in 2002, he and Kath moved back to Blenheim when he got the store managers’ job.

Ian’s job has led to 12 years of long hours.

When he first started he was working between 60 and 70 each week.

He was succeeded by Graham Lowe earlier this month.

When asked the secrets to his success, Ian is quick to mention the Warehouse’s ‘customer-first’ philosophy, and pay tribute to the support Kath and his two sons, Jason and Adam, who now live in Australia with their families, have given him.

Then there is his 80-strong team.

“Kath’s been a very important part of my career. She’s given me huge support over the years, and sometimes you need support when you go home.

“The Warehouse has been nothing but good to me, and I’ve reciprocated and been good to them.

“I’ve met lots of bloody nice people, and lots of loyal customers. We’re on the main drag, so there are lots of tourists too.”

He is looking forward to hunting some ducks in the near future, but cannot see himself settling down after that.

“After coming out of a business like this I couldn’t see myself sitting down, mowing the lawns or watching TV. “Hopefully along the way, I find a 20-30 hour job, but right now, that’s the last thing on my mind.”

He knows one thing for sure though – he wants that job to be in Blenheim.

“I love it to bits, and always have done.

It’s got everything I need – rivers, ponds, lakes, you can go skiing.

“I can’t see us leaving.”

Award-winning professional photographer Ilan Wittenberg took time out from the annual Photographic Society national conference on Anzac Day to photograph Marlborough’s World War II veterans.

Mr Wittenberg, an Auckland-based photographer, said it was an honour to create portraits of our 37 veterans as part of a national project by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP).

WWII veterans across New Zealand were simultaneously photographed on Anzac Day and all portrait collections are set to

be presented to the Royal New Zealand Returned Services Association as a gift from the NZIPP, and will also go into the National Archives.

“I feel truly honoured and privileged to be taking part in this project,” Mr Wittenberg said.

Prior to his visit, he phoned each veteran in the area personally to let them know he wished to capture their image.

“It’s very emotional for me, it’s not just a quick job.

“Some of the veterans waited for two or three hours to have their portrait created.

“Others could not wait so long or could not travel to the RSA, so I spent Sunday afternoon visiting them in their home.

“The most rewarding part of the day was the gratitude I was shown by the veterans and their family members.

“I engaged with them, they stopped, shook my hand and said ‘thank you’.”

Spreading the word about lupus

By Kristy Martin This Saturday, a group of Marlborough women will be in the Forum aiming to give the public information about lupus.

In New Zealand, lupus affects about one or two people in every 1000 and with World Lupus Day falling on May 10, members of the local support group believe it is time to educate the community about this rare condition.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had one (World Lupus Day event) here in Blenheim,” said Katrina Ferris, who runs the Marlborough Lupus Support Group.

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the body.

Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years.

Dot Campbell and Katrina Ferris will be in the forum on Saturday to provide people with information during World Lupus Day.

In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs.

This means the immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and the body’s healthy tissues. Therefore,

it creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue, causing inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.

Lupus can be very difficult to diagnose and there is no cure, Ms Ferris said.

Dot Campbell from Kaituna has lived with lupus for 50 years, but back then it was even more difficult to diagnose.

“I had it but they didn’t know,” she explains.

“I collapsed and needed eight pints of blood when it first happened, but everybody’s symptoms are different.”

Ms Campbell, who has been married for over 40 years, said lupus can be very isolating and therefore it was incredibly important to have a good medical network and support from family and friends.

Ms Ferris agrees. This was why she decided to start the support group.

Late last year, she put a notice in the Sun newspaper calling for people with lupus to meet up with her and form a support group.

The group now has about seven members who meet every three months but also provide a support network to phone and check up on each other between meetings.

“It’s a lovely little group.

“We understand each other and we’ve developed a nice little friendship.”

World Lupus Day is not about fundraising but rather to raise awareness, Mr Ferris said.

Her group will be in the Forum in Blenheim from 10am-1pm and encourage people to stop by and speak with them.

Picton hosts stand up comedy fest Ten comedians from around the world will bring their sidesplitting humour to Marlborough this month for the Picton Stand Up Comedy Festival.

Get ready for some serious laughter, if there is such a thing, as Picton Little Theatre hosts the hilarious event on Friday May 16 and Saturday May 17.

Alysha and her panel of judges will select a couple from the pool of nominations who they feel are ‘most deserving’ of winning their dream wedding.

The wedding will be held this year and everything, from wedding attire right through to the venue have been donated by local businesses.

“When it comes to nominating a couple we are looking for quality, not quantity and the winner will be chosen by the panel, not by the number of nominations they receive,” Alysha said.

By Celeste Lodewyk Tickets are still on sale for the fundraising dinner featuring guest speaker and former All Black Norm Hewitt on June 6.

The event is being hosted by the Marlborough Parents Centre (MPC) in an effort to fundraise for a new venue for the centre.

The MPC provides a range of birth and parenting education classes to the community and needs a suitable venue for these, as well as storage space, a toilet and facilities for making tea and coffee.

Proceeds raised by this fundraising dinner will be going toward funding this venue.

The dinner will be held the same weekend as the annual Parent and

Child Expo (June 8) which is a hugely popular event.

The fundraising dinner will be held at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre in Renwick and will include a three course meal, raffles throughout the night and a very special auction.

The Taylor River Project will head into its next phase this Saturday, with the first planting for the arboretum of trees from around the world.

The arboretum was suggested by local horticulturalist Ralph Ballinger and he will be on hand to see the first trees, a cherry grove near the High Street Bridge, going in.

The arboretum will be planted progressively along the riverside as a walking route through many different species and Mr Ballinger, 98, wants to see different nationalities in Marlborough coming together for the project.

By Kristy Martin Hockey Marlborough is holding an open day this Saturday with two players from the New Zealand men’s hockey team, the Black Sticks, coming to town to run skills sessions and sign autographs.

Joseph Bartholomew and Nick Wilson, along with hockey coaching expert Brent Edwards, will run Nick Wilson and Joe Batholomew of sessions with Years 1-8, under 15s, the Black Sticks men’s hockey team. under 18s and seniors throughout Rotterdam team that won the Dutch the day during the event at College League in 2012/13 and Ranchi Park.

By Kristy Martin Eighteen local swimmers made a splash at the Special Olympics ribbon day held at Woodbourne Air Force Base on Sunday.

The Marlburians competed in about 18 events on the day, with everybody achieving success just through their participation.

The swimming included relays and short and longdistance races.

There were 22 competitors who travelled over from Nelson and about 80 people in total involved, including competitors, coaches and family members.

Blenheim’s Amy Ogg was a standout performer, winning each of her three events.

Amy took first place in the 25m freestyle, 25m backstroke and the 25m flotation race.

Doubles champs a close miss for Megan Craig Blenheim squash player Megan Craig competed at the New Zealand Doubles Championship in Palmerston North at the weekend, playing alongside Kylie Lindsay and placed second after a close battle.
