This year’s Anzac Day marked 100 years since New Zealand’s involvement in the start of the First World War. Thousands of Marlburians gathered throughout the region to remember not only the original Anzacs who served at Gallipoli but also more than a century of service by NZ servicemen and women.

The curious and awed faces of young children were ever present at the services, a positive sign said ex Marlborough RSA presidents Ian Hislop and Ron Hemming (pictured at the Blenheim ceremony).

dent after being called by a member of the public who reported seeing an intoxicated woman with injuries being helped to her feet by another person.

The woman later told Police that she was the victim of an assault and had

also lost a quantity of money.

Police enquiries so far have established that the woman had been drinking at a nearby hotel and had left alone to walk the short distance home.

Police would like to speak to the

person who was seen assisting the woman and anyone else who was in the Scott Street area about 2:45am on Sunday.

Legal highs off the shelves

By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim will be free of legal highs next month, prompting strong reactions from the community.

Associate health minister Peter Dunne announced all legal highs would be banned within three weeks until testing proved they posed a low risk to the community.

The matter was approached in urgency by Parliament yesterday.

The Marlborough District Council will hear speakers toward their policy, outlining where legal highs can be sold, on Friday.

Drug Arm’s Roy Ramsey said the decision had been a long time coming, but the issue was still unsolved.

“It’s the most logical decision the Government’s made in the last ten years, especially on this subject.

“If the community decided to have a dry town with no alcohol under legislation, we could do that, but with

He said he believed the overwhelming sentiment in the community was to see a full ban.

“You’ll find most of the community’s over it, even the kids I deal with who are addicted.

“They only take it because it’s legal, and they don’t get done.”

In Renwick the large crowd consisted largely of families and the pride shown by the children who wore their relatives medals was “pleasing”, said one veteran.

Two year old Milla Boardman was a shining example as she stood patiently in line with her mother Karen to place a wreath at the War Memorial.

Taking cue from the veterans, she gave a small salute as she walked away.

Picton’s dawn parade began with a chilly start but it did not deter the crowds that marched and gathered for the service.

100 - can’t wait, Ian says

MOTORCYCLIST AIRLIFTED A motor bike rider was airlifted around 2.00pm on Sunday by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter after a crash in the Rai Valley area SH6. The male came off his motor bike landing on the side of the road. The helicopter landed on the scene and with road ambulance crews attended to the rider for multi trauma injuries in preparation for transportation to Nelson. He was flown to Nelson Hospital Emergency dept in a serious condition for further treatment.

STUDENTS RESCUED Two female students, part of an Outward Bound group were rescued by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter west of Mt Riley on Monday morning.

The students were unwell, they were assessed by intensive care paramedic, before being flown to Wairau Emergency Department for furthur care.

Mr Mathieson has led a colourful and active life, serving in WWII as part of the army medical corps in Egypt, Syria and the Middle East, and at the battle of Monte Cassino.

Last year, he extended his own record as the oldest athlete to ever compete in the South Island Masters Games.

He said the Stadium 2000 pools, which he goes to frequently, are one of the secrets of his longevity.

“They have been my lifeline.”

Mr Mathieson also keeps himself busy in other parts of life.

He is still involved in several societies, and enjoys some time on the computer, although he joked he was “pretty thick at it.”

When asked about what had changed in Picton, he recounted how he used to run daily around Bob’s Bay. “Once I had a stranger ask me: ‘are you Bob?” Born in Havelock, he trained as

a chemist in Timaru.

Mr Mathieson will celebrate his birthday with family and friends with a party this weekend.

Rotavirus vaccine soon to be available

Immunisation Week began on Monday and was marked with the news that a free Rotavirus vaccination will be available as of July 1.

Babies being born during April will be among the first who are eligible for the free rotavirus vaccine.

Rotavirus vaccine will be given alongside the existing childhood vaccinations at six weeks, three months and five months.

The Sun asked two local nurses if the Rotavirus Vaccine would be an additional injection to the childhood vaccinations, but no information was available until mid May they said.

Local vets returning to Cassino

By Adam Poulopoulos Two Picton War veterans are returning to Monte Cassino for the first time, 70 years after seeing it flattened.

Trevor Perry and Laurence ‘Bunty’ Bunt are two of 40 Kiwi veterans heading back to mark the anniversary next month.

Trevor, a tank driver, and Bunty, a spitfire pilot, are two of only five heading over from the South Island, and the pair are the only representatives from the Top of the South.

They leave Blenheim on May 11, taking in four days of commemoration services, a day of sightseeing and spending time

in transit at Whenuapai and Darwin.

Trevor said he was looking forward to visiting Cassino, which was flattened in a series of allied assaults, as they looked to carve a passage to Rome in 1944.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the change.

“When I saw it, it was smashed to bits. It was just rubble.

“There weren’t even any trees left, and there were dead bodies and body parts everywhere.”

New Zealanders suffered greatly during the battle, with 343 killed and more than 1200 wounded.

Both said they were lucky to

make it through.

“For a 21-year-old home boy from Blenheim, you hear the bang and you think ‘God, this is war. What have I got myself into?” Trevor said.

“There weren’t any two-seater spitfires, you just sit in one that’s jacked up.

“Then one day they say to you ‘Bunty, you’re in the spitfire today. You don’t know until it happens.” Bunty said.

The pair did not know each other during wartime, but met by chance at the Senior Citizens Club earlier this year.

They return from the trip on May 24.

All roads open after storm All roads have reopened following the storm which caused flooding, slips and washouts earlier in the month.

Ward Beach Road and Reserve Road were the last two to open, on Monday.

The Marlborough District

Council urges motorists continue to take caution on recently reopened roads.

Yesterday the council Assets and Service Committee met to discuss the damage, and the money it will take to repair the roads.

A figure will be known in the coming days.

The Awatere Valley Road was the worst hit, with Port Underwood Road and Tumbledown Bay Road also suffering significant damage.

Anzac parade did us proud I really enjoyed the Anzac Day services, especially seeing all the children wearing their medals and taking part in the parades.

I think it’s important that we teach our children what Anzac Day represents as one day they will be the ones carrying on the legacy of those who served.

Preserving precious memories It was when Jo Renner’s younger sister passed away at age 12 that she knew she was destined for a career in the funeral business.

She remembers her 15-year-old self staring at her sister’s body and thinking there was something not quite right with the way her beloved sibling looked.

It was a thought that stayed with her.

These days Jo works as an embalmer at Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors in Blenheim and her job involves making people who have passed away look as close to what they did when they were alive.

“I wanted to make people’s last memory of their loved one as close to the person they remember as possible,” Jo said.

“Looking right is very important.

“You only get one chance at it.

“Some people tell you straight away they don’t look right, while others go away and never say anything but it stays with them.”

The deceased is first brought to the funeral home before Jo begins the intricate process of embalming.

It is Jo’s eye for detail that helps ensure the family’s lasting memory of their loved one is as they would want to remember them.

Jo, a mother of two, has been in the funeral industry since 1997, when she did work experience at a funeral home in Christchurch, the city she grew up in.

She started out washing hearses and trimming caskets before learning the complex art of embalming.

This was after a six-year stint working as a nurse aid in rest homes.

Jo initially considered funeral directing because she had a desire to help grieving families.

Here, she tells reporter Kristy Martin about the process and what led her to choose such a career path.

“It does get quite emotional.”

Some people prefer not to have the body of a loved one embalmed, perhaps for religious reasons, or some other reason.

“It’s a very interesting and very important process,” Jo says of her chosen career.

It is something you have to enjoy doing, she insists, and always ensures she treats every body with dignity and professionalism.

“I very much love my job.”

Move to Scott Street ‘never regretted’ Story and photo

by Celeste Lodewyk In the 1980’s Scott Street was a far cry from what it is now.

It was home to a number of small long established businesses, and some of the buildings were old and ‘dilapidated’, but a number of business owners could see the street’s potential as Blenheim’s growth was set to spread south.

Ken and wife Karenne Ham were among those who decided to relocate, shifting from their small store in the Centre Point Mall to his current premises.

Ken Ham has never regretted his move to Scott Street despite others ‘questioning’ the logic of his move.

“I could see that as Blenheim grew it would shift south as it couldn’t go north, so for us it was a logical shift and we were proven right almost immediately,” he said.

The premises were redeveloped in June 1986 and after a significant makeover, including it’s ‘radical’ non reflective window front, Ken Ham’s Music Works opened for business.

“Business trebled immediately and the foot traffic was phenomenal. Still to this day I have never regretted moving to Scott Street,” he said.

Over time Scott Street became the ‘entertainment’ hub as more and more businesses moved in including cafes, bars, restaurants, and a range of retailers.

There was also a number of ‘mardi-gras’ type events held in the street which Ken was involved in organising.

Talented musician Mitch Alderlieste has joined the Ken Ham’s Music Works team full time. Here he is playing a Maton SRS 70 guitar.

“The diversity of businesses on Scott Street is great and the street has a nice feeling to it.

“Everywhere you look people are smiling and shopping which gives Scott Street a nice atmosphere,” he said.

Ken Ham’s has also seen it’s share of change as it has evolved over the years to meet different demands.

For a long time it had a specialised Hi-Fi area but last year Ken Ham’s Music Works shifted that focus to even more PA Sound equipment.

The business has also picked up leading guitar brand Maton which designs and builds its entire range in Australia.

One of Scott Street’s latest changes was the closure of the popular Chequers Cafe and Wine Bar. But with every door closed more open, two more in fact when 2 Style Hair Design and Master Roast took up occupancy in the building this year.

Special Olympics Marlborough presented t he Wa rehouse Blenheim with a certificate of appreciation last week in recognition of their continued help with fundraising work.

They hold six sausage sizzles on Warehouse premises each year.

“It’s a great fundraiser for day-to-day expenses, and the athletes in residential care can be supported.

“It’s steady and predictable and helps to raise public awareness.”

Special Olympics Marlborough has been in partnership with the Warehouse for 15 years in Greymouth and locally.

Their local swimming event is being held this Saturday, while the next sausage sizzle is on May 10.

Police inbrief 60 years and going strong The Magazine Shop has been established in Scott Street well over 60 years, according to owner John Barry.

John purchased The Magazine Shop in August 1975 and says it was there at least 25 years prior, making it one of the longest serving business in Scott Street.

The business has shifted a number

of times as the street underwent a number of physical changes over the years but the service is still the same, John grinned.

“Everything is pretty much the same, even some of my customers,” laughed.

At 11.50pm a 46-year-old male was arrested on Scott St for offensive behaviour. He was held in custody until sober and then released with a pre charge warning.

At 9.20pm a 34-year-old factory hand was arrested on Girling Ave for fighting, he was held until sober and bailed to appear in the Blenheim District Court on the 07/05/14.

At 10.40pm a 19-year-old vineyard worker was arrested for breaching his protection order. He had gone to the address of his ex partner intoxicated and smashed a window. He was held in custody and appeared in Court the following morning.

At 12.05am a 17-year-old male student was arrested for being unlawfully on a Dillons Point Rd property. He appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

CAUGHT IN POSSESSION

At 3.30am a 31-year-old female and a 31-year-old male were arrested on Grove Rd. He has been charged with possession of cannabis and she has been charged with possession of instruments for consuming methamphetamine. The male appeared in the Blenheim District Court on the Monday and she was released without charge.

Anzac message stronger than ever

By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim’s mayor is “proud” of Marlburians, and believes the turnouts to Anzac Day services showed the day’s message is stronger than ever.

Alistair Sowman was at Blenheim’s 11am service, the Dawn Service in Picton and the 9am Renwick service, to remember those who served in conflict and peacekeeping operations.

Services were also held in five other locations across the region on Friday morning, and high turnouts were recorded everywhere.

Mr Sowman said he was happy with the people’s response during both Anzac Day and the royal visit, when Prince William laid a wreath to remember the fallen.

He said the crowd was the largest he had seen in his ten years of attending Anzac services.

“They all look bigger than the last one. I said last year’s was the biggest,

and I think this one was just as big, if not bigger.”

The Blenheim service featured high youth involvement, with youngsters wearing medals, dressing up and laying wreaths.

Mr Sowman said it was crucial this trend continued.

“I think the future is bright, with such a strong youth connection.

“If the tradition is to continue, they will take it forward.

“They showed a very good understanding of the Anzac story, and the schools can take a lot of credit for that for encouraging research.”

Speakers in Blenheim included retired major Rex Dodson and Blenheim RSA president John Forrest, and Mr Sowman said they were “relevant” and “told it like it was.”

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, and Mr Sowman said he would be speaking with the RSA in due course about plans for the special service.

Picton dawn parade The Picton Dawn Parade drew similar numbers to previous years, with young people again well represented.

It was an especially moving ceremony, marking as it did 100 years since World War I was declared in 1914.

Picton RSA president Alan Beaton, the first to speak, acknowledged this.

He drew special attention to the scope of the sacrifice made by those who served in that conflict, as well as those which followed.

Pastor Bill O’Brien, wearing the red beret of the SAS (Special Air Service) in which he formerly served, led the prayer.

The moving singing of the Maori group Te Rerenga O Te Ra also added a special dimension to the ceremony.

Eight of those attending were treated at the St John Ambulance station, three being carried after fainting during the service.

Most, however, were decades younger than the returned service people on parade who stood firm during the 45-minute-long ceremony.

Aspects of war captured in floral displays Thirty members of the Marlborough Floral Art Club came together to present their take on Anzac Day last week.

Their floral displays were on show at the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce between Thursday and Sunday.

Club publicity officer Birgite Bofelt said displays were varied, capturing different aspects of wartime.

Examples included a display on ‘The Anzac Puppy,’ a dog which became the mascot for kiwi troops in WWI, and floral wreaths to symbolise the army, navy and air force.

In previous years the late Dave Williamson has carried this flag. Roger carried the flag in remembrance as there was no one left to do it.

Local man Frank Metcalfe attended the Renwick Anzac Day service wearing two prestigious medals awarded to his great uncle in the first World War.

Brave captain remembered On Anzac Day 99 years ago Captain James Metcalfe died during the First World War. He was a doctor who was caught in the firing line while looking after a medical station in France.

The brave captain remained at the medical station to treat soldiers but was sadly killed.

His death was nearly a century ago but his memory lived on when his great nephew Frank Metcalfe attended last week’s Anzac service in Renwick, wearing his two medals.

Captain Metcalfe was awarded the Military Cross in recognition of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land, and the Distinguished Service Order, which recognized acts of gallantry by military officers for which a Victoria Cross was not appropriate.

These two prestigious medals were awarded to Captain Metcalfe at different times and will ensure his sacrifice will always be remembered.

Two funded cochlear implants for children Health Minister Tony Ryall has announced children with profound hearing loss will now receive two funded cochlear implants, and children under six with only one implant will be offered the opportunity to have a second funded implant.

“Budget 2014 is providing an extra $6.3 million over four years for a bilateral cochlear implants programme for children,” says Mr Ryall.

“Under the current policy, children with severe to profound hearing loss in both ears receive one funded cochlear implant.

This new funding will mean from July 1, 2014 such children will receive two implants.

“Some families have already privately funded a second implant for their child.

We will provide these children with free follow up services, such as repairs, replacement speech processors and

spare batteries.

“In addition to the $6.3 million for children’s bilateral cochlear implants, there will also be a one-off $1.1 million funding boost to reduce the wait list for adults requiring cochlear implants.”

Around 86 people receive cochlear implants each year.

Up to 16 are infants, 30 are children aged 2-18 years and 40 are adults.

There is no waiting list for implants for children.

New online game deals with youth depression A new online game-style tool to help young people deal with depression has been launched as part of Prime Minister's Youth Mental Health Project SPARX. SPARX is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which teaches skills to cope with negative thoughts and feelings, including behaviours important in protecting against depression – problem solving, being active, positive cognition, social skills, and relaxation.

“We know mental health is a big issue for teenagers with around one in five young people experiencing some form of problem during adolescence.

"It’s important that they can get help when they need it. To do this effectively they need access to a range of forms of help and in different formats, including online,” said the Prime Minister.

SF Marlborough manager Lyn Caughey said initiatives for youth in the area of support was something her organisation

supported.

"While is has been designed to fit alongside other forms of mental health treatment, it would be very important to ensure that there is no reduction in existing services or options," she said.

Users can access, register and start using SPARX independently and anonymously in their own time - making help available to more young people around New Zealand.”

Waterpolo making a splash in region

By Adam Poulopoulos Friday’s youth grade waterpolo and flippa ball tournament is the latest initiative for two sports growing quickly in the region.

The tournament begins at 9:30 at Stadium 2000, and features six single-sex teams, two male and four female.

Kids range in age from 11 to 16.

Flippa Ball and waterpolo coordinator Karyn Baunton said since regular school competitions began two years ago, the interest had spiked.

“More schools are getting involved.

Now there are 19.

“It’s a really easy sport for kids to get involved in, with the stadium providing all the equipment and coaching, and it’s played midweek, so a lot of kids play something else on Saturdays too.”

With teams usually unisex, Ms Baunton said single-sex teams would prepare players for rep competitions.

Teams are being provided by schools around Marlborough, and two are from Queen Charlotte College.

T he Ma rlborough Racing Club meeting on Sunday provided a record breaking win for Canterbury jockey David Walsh.

Walsh won race 7, the Peter Yealands M a rlb o r o u g h C u p aboard Willy Duggan giving Walsh the most winners of any jockey in New Zealand.
