Warming up the needy By Celeste Lodewyk During winter the price of electricity rises and the need for heating increases which, for many Marlborough people can be the cause of stress and financial hardship. Elderly, solo parents and people with illnesses are some of those who are forced to face the cold without using their heating sources due to their inability to afford the running costs, according to Lachlan Marshall (pictured), Corps Officer for the Salvation Army Blenheim. The Salvation Army Blenheim responded to this need by creating a free firewood project in 2009 which Lachlan said has helped many ‘in need’. “We identified that there are many who can’t afford wood or to run their heat pumps but still have a fireplace, so we deliver a free load to them so they can keep warm during winter.
