Petrol tax rise Business owners hope increase won’t flow on By Celeste Lodewyk In December 2012 the government announced it would increase petrol excise duty by three cents each year for the following three years. Next Tuesday will see the second of these rises come into effect. The tax rise will be placed on the petrol companies who could be passing it on to consumers who, in turn, are predicted to pass it onto motorists. Challenge Queen Street Service Station owner Phil Sweet said he didn’t think fuel companies would swallow the rise, and said if there were to be one, it would be one of around six he had seen this year.
