Petrol tax rise Business owners hope increase won’t flow on

By Celeste Lodewyk In December 2012 the government announced it would increase petrol excise duty by three cents each year for the following three years.

Next Tuesday will see the second of these rises come into effect.

The tax rise will be placed on the petrol companies who could be passing it on to consumers who, in turn, are predicted to pass it onto motorists.

Challenge Queen Street Service Station owner Phil Sweet said he didn’t think fuel companies would swallow the rise, and said if there were to be one, it would be one of around six he had seen this year.

By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim country singer/songwriter Matthew McNeilly, who is currently living in Australia, was given the "best surprise" of his life when he and fiance Amelia Richards were given a guitar by country music star Keith Urban at a Sydney concert on Sunday.

Matthew excitedly phoned the Sun Newspaper on Wednesday to share the news, saying it was an incredible experience.

"Keith came out to the audience and stood on a small stage to perform.

He signed the guitar he was playing, pulled Amelia up on stage and gave

a snap showing five generations of the family's women.

Local teacher wins prize

By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough Girls' College English teacher is ecstatic after her book was recognised with a New Zealand Post Book Award.

Karen Healey's novel 'When we Wake' won the Children's Choice Award for young adult fiction at the awards ceremony in Auckland on Monday night.

Karen describes the book, which took her about nine months to write, as 'dystopian fiction.'

Set in Australia more than a century into the future, the book explores issues of government abuse and the effects of climate change.

The heroine, Tegan Oglietti, is born into the world after her body becomes the first to be revived cryogenically by the Australian military.

Karen said she was delighted to win the award in a hotly-contested category.

She said she was inspired by a variety of sources.

“I wanted to write a Sleeping Beauty story, and something that dealt with climate change.

"It asks the same sorts of questions as books like The Hunger Games and Divergent, buit it's not exactly like them.

Sixteen-year-old Tegan is another of the book's talking points.

Rescuers to receive award The heroic act of rescuing a schoolgirl from the flooded Taylor River will be recognised by a civic award bestowed by the people of Marlborough.

The award, to Marlborough Boys’ College head boy Angus Pauley and Blenheim multisport champion Jeremy McKenzie, will be

COLLISION A light van and a tractor collided at Linkwater on Wednesday morning.

The incident happened around 8am by the approach to a single-lane bridge.

The driver of the van was assessed by paramedics at the scene, but was not transported to hospital.

The tractor driver was uninjured.

Happy berth-day, Arahura The Interisland ferry Arahura will make her 50,000th crossing of Cook Strait tomorrow morning.

The ship’s engine room logbook today showed the ship would achieve her 50,000th ‘berth day’ on the 3am Picton to Wellington sailing on Thursday June 26.

Since 1983 Arahura has ferried passengers, trucks and trains between the North and South Islands, clocking up 2,500,000 nautical miles or about 4,600,000 kilometres, and making the equivalent of over 35,000 trips around New Zealand.

Barb Williams is selling her business Dress Ups.

By Adam Poulopoulos Iconic Marlborough costume hire business Dress Ups is on the market after 18 years styling the region’s partygoers.

Owner Barb Williams has put the store, on Middle Renwick Road, into the ether, looking for interest.

She said she still enjoyed the business, but it was time for a break.

“I’m ready and willing to sell and pass it on to the next owner.

“I hope they love and enjoy it as much as I do.”

Barb started the business from scratch in 1996 after spending four months travelling around the country looking at costume hire stores.

With the help of a designer and dressmaker, she designed her first 50 costumes, which included medieval garb like the monk, princess and jester.

Now, the store’s wardrobe con-

tains thousands of outfits, and Barb said the Queen of Hearts was her favourite.

She said the variety of costumes was part of the store’s charm.

“There’s a lot available on the internet, but they tend to be smaller sizes, and I pride myself in catering to all shapes and sizes.

“My clientele knows they’ll walk out of here looking great.”

Now Barb hopes somebody else can carry the service on.

During her down time, Barb plans to finish her book, which is under the working title ‘When we Take our Clothes off.’

It will recount her experiences in the store, and Barb expects to finish writing it by Christmas.

“It’s going to be hilarious,” she said.

“I won’t name names, but there’s no doubt Blenheim clients could recognise themselves in a chapter or two.”

Double celebration for Four Square

By Adam Poulopoulos The Spring Creek community will be looking to make a little money for themselves after the local Four Square had their new Lotto agency brought in.

The agency was installed two weeks ago, but will be officially opened with a sausage sizzle and giveaways on July 4, coinciding with Four Square’s 90th birthday celebrations across the country.

Spring Creek Four Square co-owner Tommy Glubb said it was exciting times for the store.

“The community has been asking to get Lotto in for some time, and what better time to get it in than for Four Square’s 90th birthday?

“We’ll try and make it a public event, and make it

a celebration for the community who have helped us stay afloat for so long.”

The Four Square is a big part of the community and Tommy said it was about the relationships his team had built.

“Eighty per cent of our business comes from the local community, and the staff see most faces come in every day.

“They know each other’s names, and the customers know we have good products and fresh produce.”

Mr Glubb and partner Casey Hilton-Pryor bought the store six months ago.

Jess relishes new role as funeral director

Local girl Jess Loach is forging a new career in her home town as a funeral director for Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors, doing what she loves most looking after the local community.

She was looking for a ‘change of direction’, and when an opportunity arose to join Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors she knew immediately it was

“I did a lot of research into the industry,

looked at what type of personality and skills were required and found that much of it applied to me.

“I could see myself in the role of funeral director and was wanting a career working to help people, so I approached Geoffrey T Sowman and began my training,” she said.

Jess joined the team at the beginning of the year and said the support she received from Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors had been ‘incredible’ and loved every minute working with the team.

“Some people are surprised when I tell them I am a funeral director but honestly, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” she said.

Outside of work Jess spends a lot of time with family, including her favourite niece ‘Ruby’.

Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards It is the 10th anniversary of the Marlborough Environment Awards and there was a signing ceremony at Council this week to welcome a new anchor sponsor, The Cawthron Institute.

The Marlborough District Council is a trustee and the other anchor sponsor of the awards, which are held every two years to showcase businesses and community projects that protect and enhance the environment.

Cawthron provides research, testing and monitoring services to support primary industries such as aquaculture and farming. “Cawthron is a good fit for these awards, which are all about encouraging and publicising what is going on in our community to look after the environment,”

Our town waterway The Taylor River runs for 9km through the heart of Blenheim before joining the Opawa River and heading out to sea off the east coast of Marlborough.

The river is many things to many people.

• To the Council’s Rivers section it is a floodway that needs a clear run when heavy rain falls.

• To our Reserves team it is a central and accessible expanse of riverside space that locals and visitors use and enjoy.

• To Council’s environmental scientists it’s the home for native fish and invertebrates and part of the district’s freshwater network with issues that need monitoring and improving.

• And to the community it is a

much-enjoyed place to walk the dog, cycle to school, go for a run, push a pram or ride a mobility scooter, paddle a kayak or explore for a school project.

The Taylor River Project works together to balance all these competing demands while looking after the water in the river and the land beside it.

Run-off from rural and urban areas means that, at the centre of town, the river is currently graded as Very Poor for recreational activities. This has led to a concerted effort by the Council to monitor and improve the water quality.

Since 2012, Council scientists have been taking water samples from 55 sites along the Taylor and its main tributaries to test for physical, biological and chemical causes.

Faecal-source tracking identified animal, wildfowl and human discharges. Council engineers have tracked and fixed the leaks from sewage and stormwater pipes but the other sources of contamination remain an issue.

The number of mobility scooters has increased over the years as older people and people with physical disabilities discover the freedom and independence they bring.

But from time to time complaints arise about the road safety issues surrounding these modes of transport – from both the riders and from other road users.

It’s important that riders realise they can pose a risk to pedestrians and that common sense and courtesy is required as they share the pavements with those on foot.

Scooter riders travel silently and their sudden appearance behind a pedestrian can be alarming, particularly for another elderly person. It’s also easy for a scooter rider to travel at speeds that create anxiety for other pedestrians.

Seddon water supply. There are heaps of towns that don’t have suitable water for human consumption. We only drink about one liter of water a day. It makes sense to either buy it, save it after you have boiled the jug for a cuppa, or fill up your water containers at a designated tap. I am sure this is a better option than having to cough up for a treatment plant that won’t be free for Seddon residents.

Labour fiscal plan sound Dear Ed, Labour has published a credible, sound and evidence based fiscal plan detailing the Party’s plans to manage the Government books when it is elected to office on September 20 in the forthcoming election.

The Party’s plan shows Labour repaying Net Core Crown debt faster than the current Government, a lower net expenditure track than the current Government, and ongoing and increasing fiscal surpluses, unless there is another global recession or natural disaster such as the Canterbury earthquake. Perhaps most importantly, the Party’s fiscal plan outlines plans to boost education in health and education.

The plan outlines a cohesive, robust and sound base for Labour to deliver strong growth, higher wages and a more resilient economy going forward. It is well worth a read.

New clinical team leader for addiction treatment centre

By Celeste Lodewyk Hatarei Peka has seen first hand what addiction can do to individuals and families, an experience that has led him to a career as a drug and alcohol counsellor.

Hatarei is the newly appointed clinical team leader for the St Marks Addiction Residential Treatment Centre in Blenheim.

His journey began when he himself took part in a programme at Christchurch’s Odyssey House over 20 years

ago for addiction.

“There was a lot of addiction in my family and I had many family members die because of it.

“In a space of two years I lost three family members, so I became very passionate about working with people struggling with addiction problems,” he said.

In 1994 Hatarei graduated and stayed on to work as a senior resident, progressing through various roles including

associate director.

He also completed a diploma in drug and alcohol counselling.

At Odyssey House he worked for 20 years until a friend tried convincing him to relocate to Auckland for a position with a similar treatment centre.

“He was telling me how much he enjoyed his work and suggested I join him, but my daughter wasn’t happy with me going to the North Island,” he laughed.

Purely by chance Hatarei saw a position advertised at Saint Marks which he said had many similarities to his work at Odyssey House, and made the move to Marlborough.

“I wanted to be doing what I loved and enjoy which includes more contact with clients.

“I really love it here in Marlborough and with St Marks, and after 20 years in this field of work I couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” he said.

Whale Chasers returns

By Adam Poulopoulos A locally-made film is heading back to Picton for two special screenings this weekend.

'Whale Chasers' will be shown tonight and tomorrow night at the Picton Little Theatre, beginning at 7pm for both screenings.

The film, which premiered in Picton in January, charts the migration of the Oceania sub-population of humpback whales from Antarctica to New Caledonia.

It took about 18 months to make, including research and editing time.

It was shown at the 11th Annual San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival in March.

Filmmaker Tess Brosnan said the movie was wellreceived in the US. "It was amazing because the Americans loved the Kiwi-ness, and the Marlborough-ness of the film.

"A lot of them were considering coming to visit Marlborough after the film."

The movie's next destination is the Mokpo International Ocean Film Festival in Korea in August.

Marlborough’s Smokefreerockquest finals are coming up again, with a variety of acts hoping to progress.

The event is being held on Friday, July 4, beginning at 7pm at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

Acts from Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls’ College and Queen Charlotte College will be performing.

Smokefreerockquest founder and director Glenn Common said the competition offered the contestants a professional setting for their music.

National finals will be held in Auckland on September 27.

Matthew’s Mechanical Services Matthew's Mechanical Services first opened on Main Street three years ago and in that time the business has grown in both size and staff numbers.

"Three years on and we are still going strong.

Taking on another two bays at the workshop has allowed space for a new waiting area and reception, as well as a 'smoko' room to keep the boys happy, he says.

A new tyre bay now features a huge range of competitively priced tyres for all vehicles and machinery.

Mags are also available and will soon be displayed for customers to view.

Working alongside Matthew is apprentice Ben who has been with the business for one year.

A big welcome has also been given to Patrick who joined the team at Matthew's Mechanical Services last month, bringing with him an extensive knowledge in working with gear boxes, trucks and heavy machinery.

At Matthew's Mechanical Services the team offers all types of mechanical work and comprehensive servicing on all vehicles.

A pick up and delivery service is available, including breakdowns, as well as call out servicing for farm vehicles and machinery.

Chilean Needle Grass

Council backs grass eradication document The Marlborough District Council has pledged its support for a strategy document outling the future eradication of Chilean Needle Grass in Marlborough.

The recently-formed Chilean Needle Grass Action Group, which is dealing with the issue in Marlborough, met their Canterbury counterparts last month to discuss the issue.

Barbara Stuart from the Landcare Research Trust has made funding available to allow the document to

be written.

CNGAG chair Warwick Lissaman said while the number of properties affected in Canterbury is smaller than Marlborough, it was clear both groups shared the opinion that education around plant identification and individual property biosecurity was important.

About 180 properties in Marlborough are affected by Chilean Needle Grass, which can reduce growth of other vegetation and cause blindness in lambs.

Pigging out A local guinea pig has turned caregiver for one particularly lucky and rotund mouse.

Patch the guinea pig has been feeding Scratch the mouse for the last three months, and owner Maureen Phillips finally has the photographic evidence to prove it.

Ms Phillips, who has been breed-

ing guinea pigs for the last five years, said her friends would finally be able to see the behaviour she had been telling them about.

"I kept telling people and none of them believed me!"

It has been quite a week for Uruguay striker Luis Suarez.

One of the best footballers in the world, Suarez’s pre-tournament injury threatened to keep him out of the World Cup. He recovered to score two goals to help his team beat England in a must-win game.

Then, as his team beat Italy in another must-win game to qualify for the second round, he was reported for biting the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The referee took no action on the field despite Chiellini showing him teeth marks, and it remains unclear if there will be retrospective action against a man suspended twice before for biting.

FOOTBALL The Marlborough Mariners football team's game against AMI Suburbs ended early last weekend when referee Dave Baker called the game off early.

The decision came after 74 minutes as a result of continued dissent by AMI Suburbs players and management.

The Mariners were leading 3-2 at the time.

The Mariners have been awarded the three points.

They head to Nelson to play Wakefield First XI tomorrow.

Through all of this, we have seen every facet of Suarez’s personality, and it’s reaching the point where he will be remembered more for his ill-discipline than his footballing genius, no matter what he achieves from here.

There are some incredibly skilled sportspeople that cannot shake their personal issues out of the public consciousness.

The late, great George Best, an incredible footballer himself, is remembered more for his alcoholism, abusive behaviour and hedonistic lifestyle. His quote “ I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered,” has gone down in folklore.

Former cricket captains Hansie Cronje and Mohammad Azharuddin were banned for life for match-fixing, and Chris Cairns may be heading down the same path as Suarez due to the allegations against him.

There are some success stories too. Ivory Coast footballer Didier Drogba, the best player his country has produced, will have five health clinics built back home with the money he has earned.

It remains to be seen how far down the rabbit hole Suarez goes, but it would be a shame for him to squander his talent with his repeated stupidity.

Teams battle for Top of South supremacy

Marlborough Boys’ College First XV captain Zac HarrisonJones will miss the rest of the season with a broken leg.

Zac, a centre, sustained the injury during the game against Lincoln High School last weekend.

Zac had a metal rod inserted into his leg after the incident.

MBC won the game 31-5 and play Christchurch Boys in Christchurch in their next fixture tomorrow.

The tournament begins tomorrow at 4pm, and continues on Sunday from 9:30am at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000.

The tournament is made up of eight teams, the top four women’s teams from either side of the Whangamoas.

In small towns you have the top four or five teams and then there's usually a level change.

"We haven't played against the Nelson teams for a while, so we have confidence in our team, but we're not

really sure what we're up against."

During the tournament each team will play three games, including the final.

Wiapo said the short turnarounds would be hard on the body.

"By the end of it it'll be quite tough.

"It's going to be a different level of netball than we're used to - quite close and pretty physical, seeing as we're playing Nelson.

"It'll be good to see whose competition is stronger."

The annual tournament began five years ago, but has not been held since 2012 due to the Nelson floods last year.

Marlborough Marathon venue announced Athletic Park has been finalised as the venue for the 2014 Marlborough Marathon.

The park will act as the start and finish line for all courses, and the hub for all the other activities on the day.

This year’s event will feature several courses, including a full marathon distance, which will see runners head twice around the half marathon course.

Courses of 15km, 10km, 5km and other kids’ distances will also be available.

Sunday, November 22 was announced as the date for the event last week.
