Zombie invasion

Story and photos by Kristy Martin With dried blood on their chins and a vacant look in their eyes, the walking dead shuffled into Blenheim on Saturday night.

Making their way through an industrial complex under the cover of darkness, these groaning, hungry zombies were searching for just one thing …brains.

But before you flee from the impending zombie apocalypse, you should know that the gore-encrusted characters were created for local filmmaker Aaron Falvey’s short film ‘Outer Darkness’.

Zombie flick brings walking dead to Blenheim Continued from page 1 The five-minute horror flick was created for a ‘zombie map’ app being developed in the US. The film’s plot follows a group of survivors in a compound who must decide whether to break the rules and let an injured stranger inside.

The prosthetic makeup was done by father-daughter team Shane and Chloe Sutherland, with some help from Jessica Ryan and face painter Claire Falvey, who is also Aaron’s sister.

Some zombies, such as Nathanael Lane, spent almost an hour in the makeup chair.

Phil McKinnon gave the extras a quick demo on how to walk like a zombie and then it was action time.

Mother and daughter Marja and Miriam Ross were transformed into ‘zombies in pyjamas’ and said the shoot was a lot of fun.

Miriam, aged 11, was the youngest on set.

Filming lasted 11 hours in frosty temperatures, but Aaron said the zombies did a great job.

The 35-year-old director, who works at Woodbourne creating training videos for the New Zealand Defence Force, has been making films since he was 10.

His brand, Falvation Films, receives no funding, so he uses his own equipment and the budget comes from his own pocket.

Aaron, who in 2012 shot another zombie film called Bloodless, uses social media to advertise for extras and had about 50 cast members and crew on set at the weekend.

The shoot cost about $700, which included the makeup, pizzas and drinks for the cast and the replacement of two broken camera lenses.

Aaron, who showcases his work on YouTube and has just released an action film called Guardian Angels, aspires to be a full-time filmmaker one day.

“I’m passionate about horror, but I really like doing action films,” he said.

Outer Darkness will be released on YouTube in the coming weeks.

Brass band heading to nationals

By Kristy Martin The Marlborough District Brass Band may be known for its crowd pleasing tunes, but on Sunday the group performed a slightly more technical ensemble.

The songs played at the band’s precontest concert demonstrated a high level of skill and competence, and still managed to draw a large audience, even though contest music is ‘not everyone’s cup of tea’, says musical director Kevin Moseley.

The band is gearing up for the national championships to be held in Invercargill next week and Sunday’s concert at Marlborough Girls’ College was a sort of ‘public rehearsal’ for them.

“It was designed to put the band under pressure, playing that music to an audience,” Mr Moseley explained.

“Most other bands in New Zealand don’t even get an audience that turn up for contest music… (But) the band gets a lot of support here in Blenheim.”

The concert comes amid an already jam-packed year for the band that began with a series of concerts in the park, followed by performances for

Bravery awards for rescue

By Adam Poulopoulos The two heroes of the Taylor River rescue have been given civic awards for bravery.

Marlborough Boys’ College head boy Angus Pauley and winemaker Jeremy McKenzie received the awards in front of their families at a ceremony on Monday.

The awards were given after the pair rescued Tenishya McIsaac, 12, from the rushing Taylor River on June 11.

Mayor Alistair Sowman said the pair had made Marlborough proud and applauded their bravery.

“You have earned the gratitude of parents everywhere.

“Every one of us would hope that someone of your calibre would step forward and help a child in such a terrifying situation.

“Their response undoubtedly saved a child’s life.”

The pair have had numerous media commitments following the incident, including appearances on Seven Sharp.

Angus said he had been surprised by how much coverage the story had received.

“The support over the last few weeks has been overwhelming.

“To get an award like this is special, and we’ll both remember it for years to come.”

Jeremy said he was “humbled” by the incident.

Two new bridges in PM’s $212m highway upgrade Blenheim’s infamous ‘banana bridge’ at the entrance to Grove Road is set to be replaced in one of two local projects announced in the National Government’s $212 million roads upgrade.

The need for a new bridge over the Opawa River on State Highway 1, at the northern entrance to Blenheim, has been on the Marlborough District Council agenda for some time due to it being too narrow, but the project was never deemed urgent by the NZTA due to a lack of serious accidents there.

will also be upgraded.

Construction work to upgrade the two local bridges would not start until 2016 or 2017 at an estimated cost of $20-25m.

ton at the National Party’s annual conference, where he said cash from the Future Investment Fund, would be used to fund 14 regionally important state highway projects across the country.

The current bridges were both narrow and very old, it said, with an upgrade to both being a ‘high priority for Blenheim local government and residents’.

The projects have been welcomed by Kaikoura MP Colin King and National Party candidate for Kaikoura Stuart Smith, who said the government’s highway upgrades were about making travel safer and easier across New Zealand.

NEW SCANNER COMING Wairau Hospital will be receiving a new CT Scanner later this year.

The 80 detector scanner will allow for faster scanning and increased image quality.

It will begin operation in September.

ROADING UPDATE Marlborough Roads says the cooperation of locals on the Whatamango Hill has enabled the re-opening of the Port Underwood Road more quickly than expected.

The road has been closed since June 12, when heavy rain in the area brought down a large slip on the Port Underwood Road, but is expected to reopen today.

“It’s been a big slip to tackle – the largest we’ve seen on any of the local roads in many decades,” said Marlborough Roads journey manager Steve Murrin.

City Hotel going down The old City Hotel building is seeing out its last days as work begins preparing it for demolition.

It is expected the building, which is almost 100 years old, will be demolished in mid-July.

Before it can be destroyed the building needs to be made safe for demolition.

Two walls, including the party wall linking the hotel with the old Wairau Podiatry building, need to be prepared.

Simcox Construction are handling the demolition.

The building, on High and Wynen Streets, needed to be earthquake-strengthened, so owner Rob Anderson opted for demolition.

Yesterday workers left the site temporarily after Mr Anderson was briefed by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust on building underground.

Regional archaeologist David Rudd said steps had to be taken to preserve the archaeological site.

“It’s not the demolition per se. It’s a very early historical area of the township and

that’s important archaeologically.”

There is no work to be done underground, and workers are expected to return to continue the job today.

A variety of options are being considered for the building site, including its part in a potential Marlborough District Council riverside development.

Devilskin returns

Seddon stalwarts moving off the farm

By Adam Poulopoulos After 42 years of married life living in the Mount Adde farm cottage, Ron and Helen Harris are moving to pastures new.

They are moving into a house in Witherlea, with son Greg taking over ownership of the 800 hectare farm yesterday.

The couple’s work in the community was recognised at a farewell function on Saturday night.

Ron was born onto the Mount Adde family farm, marrying Helen, a Blenheim ‘townie,’ in 1972.

They moved straight into the cottage at 395 Awatere Valley Road, which was subsequently added to the Mt Adde property.

Helen said it was time for the couple to slow down a notch.

“It’s been very hard to run the place for so long, and it’s difficult to slow down while you’re here.

“It’ll be nice to come and go as we like and have more freedom.”

During their time in the Awatere Ron and Helen have been involved with a

variety of organisations, including the Awatere Badminton Club, the local Joint Venture Church, Plunket, Girl Guides and Search and Rescue.

“We stayed on the patch of land and felt connected to it. There were always challenges and plenty to do,” Helen said.

“In the harder times the community pulled around us, and we’ve tried to give back and make the area a better place.”

Representatives from several of the organisations recounted stories at the farewell.

Church minister Dawn Daunauda, who initiated the event, said she was happy to help portray Seddon in a positive light.

“I feel we often get bad press, but there are a lot of good people here, and it was good to be able to showcase some of them.”

Ron and Helen have four children Pip, Tracey, Angela and Greg.

The Harris family have owned Mt Adde since 1950.

The alarm at the Redwoodtown School was activated early yesterday, when someone attempted to break into the administration block.

Police said it appeared the offender fled when the alarm was activated about 5.20am.

NZ’s finances Dear Ed, I don’t know exactly how good Labour’s fiscal plan is, one which Corey Hebberd (June 27) gives a big tick to.

I see Labour’s finance spokesman David Parker as impressive.

But then I guess anyone could do better than the budget of Bill English and John Key. The government’s budget had so much smokescreens and spin doctoring about it that Key and English believed NZ is in “the black”.

Clearing away the smoke and hype, NZ is deeply in the red (debt) about $60 billion from $10 billion when National was elected.

NZ was initially plunged into debt from the days of Muldoon.

Then the Labour Rogernomic government sold assets to pay debt, still borrowed and debt greatly increased.

The reason was and still is the foolish free market ideology where a country is run at a loss by importing extravagant, useless rubbish that swamp any earnings from exports.

I hope Labour have at last seen the light and will ditch the “horribly gone wrong” free market ideology and experiment.

one on one with the Sun

Mines, microphones and Marlborough Radio announcer Scott Radovanovich has been a regular at community events and on the Marlborough airwaves for the past five years.

He spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about his path to radio, his current job and life with his family.

Since moving into broadcasting Scott Radovanovich has met prime ministers, local identities and international celebrities. Once, he drew the ire of Gordon Ramsay after the breakfast show he was on served him McDonald’s on his birthday.

It took ‘Rado’ a while to find his way into the broadcasting game.

Proud of his dual Croatian-Maori heritage, Scott was born into a railway family in the Hawke’s Bay but grew up in Porirua, north of Wellington. He attended Mana College before spending five years as a a carpet layer.

It was after a conversation with a friend’s brother that he headed to Mount Isa, in the Australian outback, to work in the mines for about a year.

Working with the blast furnace, Scott said he had to deal with constant explosions when molten runoff hit cooler air and water chutes.

“One day I had to go and clear a big blockage, and when it exploded I got blown five or six metres.

“I got burnt down one side of my body, neck and back of my head, and to this day I don’t think they’ve found my helmet.

“That happened two or three times.”

He said although the experience was dangerous, he would not swap it for anything.

“There was so much to see, and we got paid alright, but the danger got too much.

“I remember ringing mum one day and saying, ‘If I die, you get $500,000 from my life insurance package,’ and she said ‘I don’t want you to die.”

After taking time to travel, Scott said it was on a layover in Auckland that he got drawn back home.

“I went to get some food, and I got homesick when the girl behind the counter spoke.

“It had been a while since I’d heard a Kiwi accent.”

Scott applied for the New Zealand Radio Training School in Wellington on a whim, and four months into the six-month course he was placed into a job in the King Country.

Stints in North Otago and Wanganui followed, before a three-year spell in Marlborough from 19982001.

“Back then we were Radio Marlborough on Kinross Street,” he said.

“I was the breakfast announcer when we changed over to Classic Hits, and then I was the breakfast announcer here again when we changed to The Hits.”

Scott moved to Christchurch for his next stint, but returned to Marlborough eight years later, as things started to deteriorate in

Canterbury.

“There were lots of murders around that time,” he said.

“Within eight or nine months of leaving, Christchurch started having its earthquakes, so I guess the timing was right.”

Scott now lives with his Blenheimborn wife and their four girls aged eight and younger.

“It’s five girls and I at home, and

at The Hits it’s all females too,” he said.

“You’d think I’d be allowed the Rugby Channel or something but I’m not!”

After a nomadic lifestyle during his 19-year broadcasting career, he said his family were settled in Marlborough.

“I think people appreciate my localness. They’ve never really had a

constant host on Marlborough radio for a very long time and I’ve been able to provide that with a collective eight years on air here.

“I can’t see us moving on in the near future.”

In late April Scott moved from the breakfast slot to the day shift for new radio station The Hits, 96.9 in Marlborough, 89.1 in Picton. You can hear Rado 9am-3pm weekdays.

Aratere to be safety checked The Interislander ferry Aratere has started its journey back to Wellington, and is expected to be back in service later this month.

The boat’s estimated time of arrival in Wellington is today, with a week of commissioning scheduled when it does arrive.

The ferry will be safety checked, while staff will move equipment from the departing Stena Alegra back to the Aratere.

The Aratere wil return to action when the process is completed.

Meanwhile, the Stena Alegra completed its last Cook Strait crossing on the week-

end.

In its time in New Zealand, the Stena made 449 crossings, carrying about 45,500 passengers, 34,300 vehicles and 11,900 trucks.

A group of St John Cadets attended the Champions Field Competitions in Wakefield, Nelson, on June 7.

There they competed against several other St John Cadets, as well as Nelson and Blenheim ATC cadets.

first aid, archery, drill, navigation and paint ball.

The Department of Conservation is still considering what to do with the Pine Valley Hut site after the structure was destroyed by fire on June 13.

While overall visitor numbers were not significant enough to justify the expense of replacing the hut, believed to have been razed in an arson attack, DOC staff said they understood the importance of the site for local families.

“We are hopeful that we can work with the local community to come up with a solution,” DOC ranger Shelly Sidley said.

“DOC is happy to consider any community proposals.”

The six-bunk hut in Mt Richmond Forest Park was originally built in 1966 and was a popular ‘first-time’ hut experience for Marlborough families.

Weather holds for kids cross country

Pupils, staff and supporters turned out in force to Renwick School’s annual cross-country on Friday.

The majority of the 506-strong student roll took part in the event at the Giesen Sports Centre.

Event organiser Almuth Waechter said the event went really well.

“We were happy the weather held and it didn’t get caught off.

“The emphasis was on the competitive runners trying their best, and encouraging those who aren’t really runners to give it a go, and the kids understand that.”

Some of the winners qualified for the town cross-country next term.

Lifelong netball love

Barnes leads Harriers charge Robbie Barnes led the way for Marlborough Harriers Club members at the recent Armstrong Motorgroup Wellington Marathon.

Barnes finished 33rd overall in the halfmarathon in one hour, 18 minutes and 52 seconds The time put him second in the male 50-59 year-old age division, and second in the New Zealand Half-Marathon Championships for the 50-54 year-old age group.

Barnes was one of ten Marlborough Harriers runners to compete in races on the day.

Several other runners who are not Harriers members also made the trip to compete.

About 60 children aged between four and seven took part in the latest session of the Netball Junior Programme.

The programme’s sixth week of seven was held at the Horton Park netball courts on Friday.

Children have been learning skills, like catching, passing and balance, as well as playing games of two eightminute halves.

Marlborough Netball development officer Vanessa Hika said the nationwide

programme wsa aiming to get kids involved in the game.

“We’re hoping they’ll develop a lifelong love of netball, and we won’t lose them to other sports.

“We’re encouraging boys to play too.

It’s important we lose that stigma.”

Hika said the aim was to re-run the programme in term four this year, and then again next year.

The last session of this programme will be held at 4pm on Friday.

Sport inbrief RUGBY Picton-based Waitohi have won the 2014 Bayleys Tasman Trophy.

They beat Harlequins 33-8 in Picton to take their record to a perfect 10-from-10.

They are currently eight points ahead of their nearest challengers, Central and Waimea Old Boys.

It is the first time a Marlborough team has won the trophy.

There is one more Tasman Trophy round this weekend, before the focus shifts to the semi-finals of the Marlborough competition.

DUATHLON The Rarangi mid-winter duathlon takes place on Sunday.

The event begins at 10am, beginning at the Rarangi DOC camping ground.

It begins with a 5 kilometre run, continues with a 20km bike ride and finishes with a 2.5km run.

WOODBOURNE HALF-MARATHON Entries for the 32nd Woodbourne HalfMarathon are now open.

The event takes place on Sunday, August 17, and includes 21 kilometre, 10km and 5km distances.

Volleyball winter league begins Last Thursday evening saw the start of Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League, with 23 teams contesting four grades at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000.

Premier Grade has seen the return of teams Magnum, Cri Clovers and Kinoaths, which should make for some interesting competition for that Grade as all three teams won their first game.

ers and Fijian Warriors started with 3-0 wins, while The Hybrids, Marlborough Musseleers and Indevin Thunderballs all started with clean sweeps in the Social B grade.

This week’s Fairweathers’ Fair Play Team of the Week Award went to Social A Grade’s Sets in the City.

This Thursday players take a break as Stadium 2000 plays host to The Home & Garden Show. Play resumes again on Thursday July 10.
